A simple method is presented and used to estimate the portions of SO inf4 sup2? and NO inf? sup3 that contribute to the strong acidity in weekly precipitation samples collected at three NADP sites in the eastern United States. The method assumes that, in general, the difference between SO inf4 sup2? and NH inf+ sup4 represents acidic sulfate and the difference between NO inf? sup3 and soil-derived materials (the sum of Ca2+, Mg2+, and K+) represents acidic nitrate. Acidic sulfate and nitrate are considered to be the predominant source of H+ (determined from laboratory pH) in the weekly precipitation samples. Most of the acidity for all three sites was attributed to acidic sulfate. The highest fraction of acidic SO inf4 sup2? to H+ wet deposition values was for the east-central Tennessee site (0.95) and the northeastern Illinois site (0.90), and the lowest fraction occurred at the central Pennsylvania site (0.75). The Tennessee site had the greatest acidic fraction of sulfate (0.84) and the Pennsylvania site had the greatest acidic fraction of nitrate (0.59).  相似文献

Purpose

Crop straws and animal manure have the potential to ameliorate acidic soils, but their effectiveness and the mechanisms involved are not fully understood. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of two crop (maize and soybean) straws, swine manure, and their application rates on acidity changes in acidic red soils (Ferralic Cambisol) differing in initial pH.

Materials and methods

Two red soils were collected after 21 years of the (1) no fertilization history (CK soil, pH 5.46) and (2) receiving annual chemical nitrogen (N) fertilization (N soil, pH 4.18). The soils were incubated for 105 days at 25 °C after amending the crop straws or manure at 0, 5, 10, 20, and 40 g kg?1 (w/w), and examined for changes in pH, exchangeable acidity, N mineralization, and speciation in 2 M KCl extract as ammonium (NH4+) and nitrate plus nitrite (NO3??+?NO2?).

Results and discussion

All three organic materials significantly decreased soil acidity (dominated by aluminum) as the application rate increased. Soybean straw was as effective (sometimes more effective) as swine manure in raising pH in both soils. Soybean straw and swine manure both significantly reduced exchangeable acidity at amendment rate as low as 10 g kg?1 in the highly acidic N soil, but swine manure was more effective in reducing the total acidity especially exchangeable aluminum (e.g., in the N soil from initial 5.79 to 0.50 cmol(+) kg?1 compared to 2.82 and 4.19 cmol(+) kg?1 by soybean straw and maize straw, respectively). Maize straw was less effective than soybean straw in affecting soil pH and the acidity. The exchangeable aluminum decreased at a rate of 4.48 cmol(+) kg?1 per pH unit increase for both straws compared to 6.25 cmol(+) kg?1 per pH unit from the manure. The NO3??+?NO2? concentration in soil increased significantly for swine manure amendment, but decreased markedly for straw treatments. The high C/N ratio in the straws led to N immobilization and pH increase.

Conclusions

While swine manure continues to be effective for ameliorating soil acidity, crop straw amendment has also shown a good potential to ameliorate the acidity of the red soil. Thus, after harvest, straws should preferably not be removed from the field, but mixed with the soil to decelerate acidification. The long-term effect of straw return on soil acidity management warrants further determination under field conditions.

Purpose

This study aimed to investigate the effect of initial soil pH and organic anion-to-acid ratio on changes in soil pH.

Materials and methods

Two soils (Podosol and Tenosol) along with two carboxylic acids (malic and citric acid) and their anions (sodium malate and citrate), commonly found in plant residues, were used in this study. Stock solutions of either malic acid and disodium malate or citric acid and trisodium citrate were added to pre-incubated soils at anion-to-acid ratios of 0:100, 10:90, 25:75, 50:50, 75:25, 90:10, 100:0 and at 0.25 g C kg?1 soil. Soils were adjusted to 80 % field capacity and mixed thoroughly, and three replicates of 50 g of each soil were transferred into individual plastic cores and incubated at 25 °C in the dark for 30 days. Soil pH, respiration, NH4 +, and NO3 ? were determined.

Results and discussion

Soil pH increased linearly with increasing organic anion-to-acid ratio. The addition of organic anions to soil resulted in net alkalinisation. However, the addition of organic acids immediately decreased soil pH. During subsequent incubation, soil pH increased when the organic anions were decomposed. Alkalinity generation was lower in the Podosol (initial pH 4.5) than in the Tenosol (initial pH 6.2), and was proportional to anion-to-acid ratio across all the treatments. Cumulative CO2-C release was approximately three times lower in the Podosol than the Tenosol at day 2 due to lower microbial activity in the low-pH Podosol.

Conclusions

Increasing anion-to-acid ratio of organic compounds increased soil pH. Increases in soil pH were mainly attributed to direct chemical reactions and decomposition of organic anions. Low pH decreased the amount of alkalinity generated by addition of organic compounds due to incomplete decomposition of the added compounds. This study implies that organic anion-to-acid ratio in plant residues plays an important role in soil pH change.  相似文献

Purpose

The Al forms on maize and soybean roots were investigated to determine the main factors affecting the distribution of Al forms and its relationship with Al plant toxicity.

Materials and methods

Solution culture experiments were conducted to obtain the fresh roots of maize and soybean. KNO3, citric acid, and HCl were used to extract the exchangeable, complexed, and precipitated forms of Al on the roots.

Results and discussion

The complexed Al was higher than the exchangeable and precipitated Al. Root CECs of soybean and maize were 77 and 55 cmol kg?1, and functional groups on the soybean roots (262.4 cmol kg?1) were greater than on maize roots (210.8 cmol kg?1), which resulted in more exchangeable and complexed Al on soybean roots than on maize roots, and was one of the reasons for the increased Al toxicity to soybean. The total and exchangeable Al were the highest on the plant root tips and decreased gradually with increasing distance from the tips. Ca2+, Mg2+, and NH4 + cations reduced the exchangeable Al on the roots. Oxalate and malate also reduced the adsorption and absorption of Al by roots, and the effect of oxalate was greater than malate.

Conclusions

Higher exchangeable and complexed Al on plant roots led to increased Al plant toxicity. Ca2+, Mg2+, and NH4 + and oxalate and malate can effectively alleviate Al plant toxicity.

Purpose

Nitrate (NO 3 ? ) is often considered to be removed mainly through microbial respiratory denitrification coupled with carbon oxidation. Alternatively, NO 3 ? may be reduced by chemolithoautotrophic bacteria using sulfide as an electron donor. The aim of this study was to quantify the NO 3 ? reduction process with sulfide oxidation under different NO 3 ? input concentrations in river sediment.

Materials and methods

Under NO 3 ? input concentrations of 0.2 to 30?mM, flow-through reactors filled with river sediment from the Pearl River, China, were used to measure the processes of potential NO 3 ? reduction and sulfate (SO 4 2? ) production. Molecular biology analyses were conducted to study the microbial mechanisms involved.

Results and discussion

Simultaneous NO3 ? removal and SO4 2? production were observed with the different NO 3 ? concentrations in the sediment samples collected at different depths. Potentially, NO 3 ? removal reached 72 to 91?% and SO 4 2? production rates ranged from 0.196 to 0.903?mM?h?1. The potential NO 3 ? removal rates were linearly correlated to the NO 3 ? input concentrations. While the SO 4 2? production process became stable, the NO 3 ? reduction process was still a first-order reaction within the range of NO 3 ? input concentrations. With low NO 3 ? input concentrations, the NO 3 ? removal was mainly through the pathway of dissimilatory NO 3 ? reduction to NH 4 + , while with higher NO 3 ? concentrations the NO 3 ? removal was through the denitrification pathway.

Conclusions

While most of NO 3 ? in the sediment was reduced by denitrifying heterotrophs, sulfide-driven NO 3 ? reduction accounted for up to 26?% of the total NO 3 ? removal under lower NO 3 ? concentrations. The vertical distributions of NO 3 ? reduction and SO 4 2? production processes were different because of the variable bacterial communities with depth.  相似文献

Purpose

Few studies have examined the effects of biochar on nitrification of ammonium-based fertilizer in acidic arable soils, which contributes to NO3 ? leaching and soil acidification.

Materials and methods

We conducted a 42-day aerobic incubation and a 119-day weekly leaching experiment to investigate nitrification, N leaching, and soil acidification in two subtropical soils to which 300 mg N kg?1 ammonium sulfate or urea and 1 or 5 wt% rice straw biochar were applied.

Results and discussion

During aerobic incubation, NO3 ? accumulation was enhanced by applying biochar in increasing amounts from 1 to 5 wt%. As a result, pH decreased in the two soils from the original levels. Under leaching conditions, biochar did not increase NO3 ?, but 5 wt% biochar addition did reduce N leaching compared to that in soils treated with only N. Consistently, lower amounts of added N were recovered from the incubation (KCl-extractable N) and leaching (leaching plus KCl-extractable N) experiments following 5 wt% biochar application compared to soils treated with only N.

Conclusions

Incorporating biochar into acidic arable soils accelerates nitrification and thus weakens the liming effects of biochar. The enhanced nitrification does not necessarily increase NO3 ? leaching. Rather, biochar reduces overall N leaching due to both improved N adsorption and increased unaccounted-for N (immobilization and possible gaseous losses). Further studies are necessary to assess the effects of biochar (when used as an addition to soil) on N.  相似文献

Purpose

Agricultural practises impact soil properties and N transformation rate, and have a greater effect on N2O production pathways in agricultural soils compared with natural woodland soils. However, whether agricultural land use affects N2O production pathways in acidic soils in subtropical regions remains unknown.

Materials and methods

In this study, we collected natural woodland soil (WD) and three types of agricultural soils, namely upland agricultural (UA), tea plantation (TP) and bamboo plantation (BP) soils. We performed paired 15N-tracing experiment to investigate the effects of land use types on N2O production pathways in acidic soils in subtropical regions in China.

Results and discussion

The results revealed that heterotrophic nitrification is the dominant pathway of N2O production in WD, accounting for 44.6 % of N2O emissions, whereas heterotrophic nitrification contributed less than 2.7 % in all three agricultural soils, due to a lower organic C content and soil C/N ratio. In contrast, denitrification dominated N2O production in agricultural soils, accounting for 54.5, 72.8 and 77.1 % in UA, TP and BP, respectively. Nitrate (NO3 ?) predominantly affected the contribution from denitrification in soils under different land use types. Autotrophic nitrification increased after the conversion of woodland to agricultural lands, peaking at 42.8 % in UA compared with only 21.5 % in WD, and was positively correlated with soil pH. Our data suggest that pH plays a great role in controlling N2O emissions through autotrophic nitrification following conversion of woodland to agricultural lands.

Conclusions

Our results demonstrate the variability in N2O production pathways in soils of different land use types. Soil pH, the quantity and quality of organic C and NO3 ? content primarily determined N2O emissions. These results will likely assist modelling and mitigation of N2O emissions from different land use types in subtropical acidic soils in China and elsewhere.

Purpose

A laboratory incubation under constant temperature and humidity was conducted to estimate the impacts of nitrogen (N) fertilizers on the acidification of two acid soils (Plinthudult and Paleudalfs) in south China.

Materials and methods

The experiment had three treatments, i.e., control (CK), addition of urea (U), and addition of ammonium sulfate (AS). We measured soil pH, nitrate (NO3 ?), ammonium (NH4 +), exchangeable hydrogen ion (H+), and aluminum ion (Al3+) concentrations at various intervals during the 90 days of incubation. Soil buffering capacity (pHBC) was also measured at the end of the experiment.

Results and discussion

The application of N fertilizers resulted in soil acidification. The U treatment caused greater acidification of the Plinthudult soil than the AS treatment, while there were no differences between U and AS treatments on the acidification of the Paleudalfs. At the end of the trial, the pHBC of Plinthudult in AS treatment was greater than that in CK and U treatments, which may be due to the buffering system of NH4 + and NH4OH. However, the pHBC of Paleudalfs was unchanged between treatments. The dynamics of exchangeable H+ and Al3+ corresponded to that of soil pH. Correlation analysis showed that both soil exchangeable H+ and soil exchangeable Al3+ were significantly related to soil pH.

Conclusions

Application of urea and ammonium sulfate caused acidification in both soils and increased soil exchangeable Al3+ and H+ concentrations in the Paleudalfs. The application of urea increased exchangeable Al3+, and ammonium sulfate increased pHBC in the Plinthudult.  相似文献

Purpose

The aim of this study was to evaluate the behaviour of P in saline Spolic Technosols flooded with eutrophic water, with and without plant rhizosphere, in order to assess the role of these soils as sinks or sources of this nutrient.

Materials and methods

Samples were taken from basic (pH?~7.8), carbonated and acidic (pH?~6.2), de-carbonated soils of salt marshes polluted by mine wastes. Three treatments were assayed: pots with Sarcocornia fruticosa, pots with Phragmites australis and pots without plants (bare soil). The pots were flooded for 15?weeks with eutrophic water (PO 4 3? ~6.92?mg?L?1) and pH, Eh and water-soluble organic carbon and PO 4 3? concentrations were monitored in the soil solution. A soil P fractionation was applied before and after the flooding period.

Results and discussion

The PO 4 3? concentration in the soil solution decreased rapidly in both soils, with and without plant, being diminished by 80?C90?% after 3?h of flooding. The Fe/Mn/Al oxides and the Ca/Mg compounds played an important role in soil P retention. In pots with S. fruticosa, the reductive conditions due to flooding induced P release from metal oxides and P retention to Ca/Mg compounds. In turn, P. australis may have favoured the release of P from carbonates, which was transferred to Fe/Mn/Al compounds.

Conclusions

The retention of P by the soil was the main mechanism involved in the removal of PO 4 3? from the eutrophic flooding water but to evaluate the capacity of these systems as long-term P sinks, the combined effect of metals, Ca/Mg compounds and specific plant species should be considered.  相似文献

This study assessed the foliar uptake of 15N-labelled nitrogen (N) originating from wet deposition along with leaf surface conditions, measured by wettability and water storage capacity. Foliar 15N uptake was measured on saplings of silver birch, European beech, pedunculate oak and Scots pine and the effect of nitrogen form (NH 4 + or NO 3 ? ), NH 4 + to NO 3 ? ratio and leaf phenology on this N uptake was assessed. Next to this, leaf wettability and water storage capacity were determined for each tree species and phenological stage, and the relationship with 15NH 4 + and 15NO 3 ? uptake was examined. Uptake rates were on average five times higher (p?<?0.05) for NH 4 + than for NO 3 ? and four times higher for deciduous species than for Scots pine. Developing leaves showed lower uptake than fully developed and senescent leaves, but this effect was tree species dependent. The applied NH 4 + to NO 3 ? ratio did only affect the amount of N uptake by senescent leaves. The negative correlation between measured leaf contact angles and foliar N uptake demonstrates that the observed effects of tree species and phenological stage are related to differences in leaf wettability and not to water storage capacity.  相似文献

Impact of organic matter addition on pH change of paddy soils   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0

Purpose

The objective of the present study was to explore the effect of initial pH on the decomposition rate of plant residues and the effect of residue type on soil pH change in three different paddy soils.

Materials and methods

Two variable charge paddy soils (Psammaquent soil and Plinthudult soil) and one constant charge paddy soil (Paleudalfs soil) were used to be incubated at 45 % of field capacity for 105 days at 25 °C in the dark after three plant residues (Chinese milk vetch, wheat straw, and rice straw) were separately added at a level of 12 g?kg?1 soil. Soil pH, CO2 escaped, DOC, DON, MBC, MBN, NH 4 + , and NO 3 ? during the incubation period were dynamically determined.

Results and discussion

Addition of the residues increased soil pH by 0.1–0.8 U, and pH reached a maximum in the Psammaquent and Plinthudult soils with low initial pH at day 105 but at day 3 in the Paleudalfs soil with high initial pH. Incorporation of Chinese milk vetch which had higher concentration of alkalinity (excess cations) and nitrogen increased soil pH more as compared with incorporation of rice and wheat straws. Microbial activity was the highest in Chinese milk vetch treatment, which resulted in the highest increase of soil pH as compared with addition of rice and wheat straws. However, nitrification seemed to be inhibited in the variable charge soils of Psammaquent and Plinthudult but not in the constant charge soil of Paleudalfs.

Conclusions

The effectiveness of increasing soil pH after incorporation of the plant materials would be longer in low initial pH soils of Psammaquent and Plinthudult than in high initial pH soil of Paleudalfs. In order to achieve the same degree of pH improvement, higher amounts of plant residues should be applied in constant charge soils than in variable charge soils.  相似文献

Data from two national precipitation chemistry monitoring networks, and several regional air and precipitation chemistry networks are used to describe some broad-scale features of acidic deposition in eastern North America. In northeastern North America, the coefficient of variation is shown to increase from 10–16% for annual averages to nearly 100% for daily values. There is a strong annual cycle in H+, SO inf4 sup= and NH inf4 sup+ deposition and some of the other ions although these cycles are not all in phase. The wet NO inf3 sup? deposition contributes relatively more than SO inf4 sup= to the acidity of snow as compared to rain. Wet deposition is highly “episodic” with about 50% to 70% of the total annual deposition of SO inf4 sup= and NO inf3 sup? accumulating in the highest 20% of the days. Estimates made in various ways indicate that, over eastern North America as a whole, dry deposition is approximately equal to wet for both SO inf4 sup= and NO inf3 sup? . Dry may exceed wet in the high emissions zone but drops to about 20% of the total deposition in more remote areas. Deposition via fog or low cloud impaction is an important input to high elevation forests, but more data are required to quantify the magnitude and regional extent of this.  相似文献

The atmospheric deposition of air pollutants at a forest edge was studied by means of monitoring canopy throughfall at the edge and at five different parallel lines in the forest behind the edge. The investigation was carried out at a pine forest on the Swedish west coast. Throughfall and bulk deposition samples were analyzed for volume, SO 4 2? , NO 3 ? , Cl?, NH 4 + , Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, and for pH. The results show that the throughfall flow at the edge was increased substantially for most ions. The ratios in throughfall flows between the edge and the line 50 m into the forest were for SO 4 2? , 1.5, NO 3 ? 2.9, NH 4 + 2.7, and Na+ 3.1. Since this effect is not only valid for forest edges but also for hillsides, hilltops, and edges between stands of different age, etc., there might be substantial areas which get much larger total deposition than the normally considered closed forest.  相似文献

Natural mats of C. stellaris growing in the subarctic lichen woodlands of northern Québec were treated in a randomized complete block design with solutions of simulated rain at pH 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, 5.0 and 5.6. These solutions were acidified by addition of mixtures of sulfuric and nitric acids to give both 2 : 1 and 6 : 1 μequivalent ratios of SO inf4 sup= : NO inf3 sup? . After two years of acidification there was no significant effect of either pH or SO inf4 sup= : NO inf3 sup? ratio on the growth of C. stellaris, but thallus discoloration was evident below pH 3.5. After three years of acidification marginally significant (p = 0.05) but erratic depression of growth occurred under the 6 : 1 but not the 2 : 1 acidification regime, especially at pH 4.5 or less. Acid precipitation therefore only very gradually impairs the growth of C. stellaris, and the deleterious effects of acidification may be partially offset by nitrogen enrichment when precipitation is relatively rich in nitrate compared to sulfate ions.  相似文献

Purpose

Initial soil pH determines the direction and magnitude of pH change after residue addition. This study aimed to evaluate the relative importance of initial soil pH and rate of residue application in determining subsequent pH change, nitrogen (N) mineralization, and soil-exchangeable aluminum (Al).

Materials and methods

An incubation experiment was conducted for 102 days on a Plinthudult soil and a Paleudalf soil, where pH gradients were produced after application of direct current (DC). Rates of vetch applications were 0, 5, 15, 30, and 50 g kg?1 soil.

Results and discussion

Increasing rates of vetch application caused greater increases in soil pH, but no consistent increase in soil pH at higher initial pH range (4.40~6.74), because of nitrification. There was a positive correlation between alkalinity production and the initial soil pH at day 14, while correlations became negative at days 56 and 102. Mineral N accumulated as NH4 +–N in low pH soils, due to limited nitrification, while NO3 ?–N dominated in higher pH soils. Application of vetch decreased KCl-extractable Al, probably because of complexation of Al by organic matter and precipitation of Al as a result of increased pH, reductions in Al concentration increased with increasing rates of vetch application. However, this amelioration effect on Al concentration weakened with time in higher pH soils.

Conclusions

Application of vetch residue can significantly increase soil pH and concentrations of mineral N and reduce exchangeable Al. These amelioration effects are enhanced with increased rate of vetch addition and vary with time depending on the initial pH of the soil.  相似文献

Purpose

The beneficial effect to the environment of nitrate (NO3 ?) removal by denitrification depends on the partitioning of its end products into nitrous oxide (N2O), nitric oxide (NO), and dinitrogen (N2). However, in subtropical China, acidic forest mineral soils are characterized by negligible denitrification capacity and thus reactive forms of N could not be effectively converted to inert N2, resulting in a negative environmental consequence. In this study, the influences of C input from litter decomposition on denitrification rate and its gaseous products under anoxic conditions in the acidic coniferous and broad-leaved forest soils in subtropical China were investigated using the acetylene (C2H2) blockage technique in the laboratory.

Materials and methods

The coniferous and broad-leaved forest soils with and without litter addition were incubated under anaerobic conditions for 244 h. There were three treatments for each forest soil including addition of 0.5 and 1% corresponding litter (gram of litter per gram of soil) and the control without addition of litter.

Results and discussion

The results showed that litter addition into the broad-leaved forest soil had no effect on average rates of denitrification (calculated as the sum of NO, N2O, and N2), whereas in the coniferous forest soil, the addition resulted in a significant increase in average denitrification rate. In the broad-leaved forest soil, both rates of litter addition decreased the production of NO but increased the production of N2, and high rates of litter addition into the coniferous forest soil promoted the reduction of N2O to N2.

Conclusions

Increased decomposition of litter in the forest soils could effectively reduce N2O and NO production through denitrification under anaerobic conditions.  相似文献

More than 1400 precipitation samples were collected weekly from 5 sites in Nova Scotia between 1978 and 1987. High concentrations of H+, non-marine SO inf4 sup= (*SO4) and NO inf3 sup- were observed in 1978 and 1986. In 1983, concentrations of all three parameters were the lowest in the data record. Fluctuations in emissions for SO2 are insufficient to account for the variability observed in concentration and deposition values. Mean annual concentrations in 1983 were 13, 16, and 6 ueq L-1 for H+, *SO4, and NO inf3 sup- , respectively. In 1986 the values were 35, 28, and 13 ueq L-1. Concentrations in 1978 were 31, 38, and 16 ueq L-1. Average pH of precipitation was 4.61 during the 10 yr study. The two most acidic years were 1979 (4.47) and 1986 (4.46). In 1983, the average pH was 4.89. The ratio (equivalents) of NO inf3 sup- to *SO4 was 0.41, so most acidity in the precipitation results from H2SO4 However, multiple regression analysis revealed that H+ is more sensitive to changes in NO3-concentrations than *SO4. Ratios of summer (JJA) vs winter (JFM) average concentrations were examined. During summer months, *SO4 and H+ were 1.8 times winter values. Summer to winter ratios for NO inf3 sup- and NH inf4 sup+ were 1.4 and 2.5, respectively.  相似文献

Nitrification is a process in which ammonia is oxidized to nitrite (NO 2 ? ) that is further oxidized to nitrate (NO 3 ? ). The relations between these two steps and ambient ammonia concentrations were studied in surface water of Chinese shallow lakes with different trophic status. For the oxidations of both ammonia and NO 2 ? , more eutrophic lakes generally showed significantly higher potential and actual rates, which was linked with excessive ammonia concentrations. Additionally, both potential and actual rates for ammonia oxidation were higher than those for NO 2 ? oxidation in the more eutrophic lakes, while in the lakes with lower trophic status, both potential and actual rates for ammonia oxidation were almost equivalent to those for NO 2 ? oxidation. This can be explained by the excessive unionized ammonia (NH3) concentration that inhibits nitrite-oxidizing bacteria in the more eutrophic lakes. The laboratory experiment with different ammonia concentrations, using the surface water in a eutrophic lake, showed that ammonia oxidation rates were proportional to the ammonia concentrations, but NO 2 ? oxidation rates did not increase in parallel. Furthermore, NO 2 ? oxidation was less associated with particles in natural water of the studied lakes. Without effective protection, it would be selectively inhibited by the excessive ammonia in hypereutrophic lakes, resulting in NO 2 ? accumulation. Shortly, the increased concentrations of ammonia cause a misbalance between the NO 2 ? -producing and the NO 2 ? -consuming processes, thereby exacerbating the lake eutrophication.  相似文献

The present work discusses the startup and operation of different biotrickling filters during the simultaneous removal of NH3, H2S, and ethyl mercaptan (EM) for odor control, focusing on (a) the impact of pH control in the stability of the nitrification processes during reactor startup and (b) the crossed effects among selected pollutants and their by-products. Two biotrickling filters were packed with poplar wood chips (R1 and R2A), while a third reactor was packed with polyurethane foam (R2B). R2A and R2B presented a pH control system, whereas R1 did not. Loads of 2?C10?g N?CNH3 m?3?h?1, 5?C16?g S?CH2S m?3?h?1, and 1?C6?g EM m?3?h?1 were supplied to the bioreactors. The presence of a pH control loop in R2A and R2B proved to be crucial to avoid long startup periods and bioreactors malfunctioning due to biological activity inhibition. In addition, the impact of the presence of different concentrations of a series of N species (NH 4 + , NO 2 ? , and NO 3 ? ) and S species (SO 4 2? and S2?) on the performance of the two biotrickling filters was studied by increasing their load to the reactors. Sulfide oxidation proved to be the most resilient process, since it was not affected in any of the experiments, while nitrification and EM removal were severely affected. In particular, the latter was affected by SO 4 2? and NO 2 ? , while nitrification was significantly affected by NH 4 + . The biotrickling filter packed with polyurethane foam was more sensitive to crossed effects than the biotrickling filter packed with poplar wood chips.  相似文献

Many bryophytes rely to a large extent on atmospheric deposition for their nutrient uptake. However, increasing levels of atmospheric ammonium NH 4 + and nitrate NO 3 - attract concern as to the possible harmful effects onbryophytes from these two nutrient sources. Changes in nitrate reductase (NR) activities, cation(Ca, K and Mg), total nitrogen (N) and organic acid concentrations were investigated for themosses, Racomitrium lanuginosum, Rytidiadelphus loreus and Philonotis fontana, in response to asingle field misting with 3 mol m-3 NH 4 + and NO 3 - . Increases of 20% were recordedfor tissue N content, 48 hr after misting with N containing solutions. When labelled NH 4 + or NO 3 - were applied to R. Lanuginosum at 1, 3 and 6mol m-3 concentrations, partitioning ofincorporated 15N between different tissueregions occured, with the highest N uptake in the upper stem and leaves. High concentrations ofapplied N resulted in reduced efficiency of N uptake. NH 4 + applications caused declines in NR activities, organic acidsand cations, whereas, NO 3 - treatments causedthe reverse response. Changes in cation contents, organic acids and NR activity reflect short-termregulation of N metabolism in the presence of defined N sources, as well as potential mechanismsof regulating cell pH homoeostasis. The consistency of physiological responses, especially NRactivities, over short-term pollution episodes, provides evidence for their use as indicators of both NH 4 + and NO 3 - pollution.  相似文献
