Importation of exotic animals that may harbor infectious agents poses risks for native species with potentially severe impacts on animal health and animal production. Although the Asian water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) population in Europe is steadily increasing, its susceptibility to viral infections and its role for interspecies transmission is largely unknown. To identify viral infections that are shared between exotic water buffaloes and native small ruminants, we collected blood samples from 3 Swiss farms on which water buffaloes were kept either without, or together with, sheep or goats. These samples were analyzed by next-generation sequencing (NGS) as well as by selected conventional tests, including PCR, ELISA, and in some cases a virus neutralization test. By NGS, a novel virus of the genus Gemykrogvirus (GyKV; Genomoviridae) was first detected in the buffaloes on one farm, and subsequently confirmed by PCR, and was also detected in the co-housed sheep. In contrast, this virus was not detected in buffaloes on the farms without sheep. Moreover, conventional methods identified a number of viral infections that were not shared between the exotic and the native animals, and provided evidence for potential roles of water buffaloes in the epidemiology of ruminant pestiviruses, especially bovine viral diarrhea virus, bluetongue virus, and possibly bovine alphaherpesvirus 2. Our results clearly indicate that water buffaloes are susceptible to interspecies viral transmission and may act as intermediate hosts, or even as reservoirs, for these viruses.  相似文献

We have genetically analyzed ruminant pestiviruses. All >150 bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) viruses isolated from cattle in Switzerland belonged to genotype 1, with subgenogroups e, h, k and b found in decreasing frequency. To date, representatives of subgenogroup k have been detected in Switzerland only. Despite serological evidence of Border disease in sheep, only few Border disease viruses have been isolated, all of which belong to the novel group 3. Serological evidence suggested that pestivirus infections may occur also in wild ruminants in Switzerland but no isolates are available for analysis. In addition, we describe two pestiviruses, one a cell culture contaminant and the other isolated from a buffalo, that cluster with a recently proposed novel pestivirus species.  相似文献

Piroplasms are tick-transmitted blood parasites belonging to the genera Babesia and Theileria. In western and southern Switzerland, B. divergens, a small Babesia species, has been known for a long time as a parasite of cattle. Recent investigations have revealed the autochthonous occurrence of this parasite also in central and eastern Switzerland. On the occasion of an outbreak of anaplasmosis in the canton of Grisons, however, B. bigemina, a large Babesia species, and Theileria of the buffeli/sergenti/orientalis species complex were for the first time identified; the epidemiology of these two piroplasms in Switzerland remains unknown until now. The recent identification by genetic analyses of B. divergens in wild ruminants contradicts the hitherto postulated strict host specificity of this Babesia species for cattle. B. divergens as well as the closely related Babesia spp. genotype EU1 have in single cases also been identified in splenectomized humans.The rodent babesia B. microti which causes a human infection that is considered an "emerging tick-borne disease" in the U.S.A., is widespread in rodent populations in Switzerland, but seems to be of minor relevance as zoonotic pathogen here. Reasons for this could be differences in virulence of the parasites or in the transmission by the respective tick-vectors on the two continents.  相似文献

Potent anthelmintics were introduced into the Swiss market several decades ago. Despite this, gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN), lungworms and the large liver fluke (Fasciola hepatica) can successfully inhabit Swiss ruminant farms. This is mainly due to a high reproductive capacity as well as very efficient survival strategies. In addition some species readily develop anthelmintic resistance. GIN-infections in young cattle are under comparatively good control. However, prophylactic measures are compromised where adult stock is also affected due to incomplete development of immune protection. Under these circumstances control measures must include all age groups. This results in fewer helminths in refugia thus may accelerate the development of anthelmintic resistance. This review aims to present a synopsis of the significance of the major helminth infections obtained on pasture by large and small ruminants in Switzerland. Currently available strategies for strategic helminth control are summarized and an outlook is given on new developments which might expand the spectrum of control measures relevant for veterinary practice in the future.  相似文献

The occurrence of Borrelia spirochaetes in cattle in the Netherlands is reported for the second time, and in red deer and roe-deer in Austria for the first time. It is postulated that these spirochaetes are Borrelia burgdorferi rather than B. theileri. The reservoir role of ruminants in the epidemiology of human disease caused by B. burgdorferi in Europe should be investigated.  相似文献

Chlamydophila abortus (formerly Chlamydia psittaci) is one of the most important causes of reproductive failure in sheep and goats, especially in intensively managed flocks. The disease is usually manifested as abortion in the last 2 to 3 weeks of gestation, regardless of when the animal was infected. Ewes that abort are resistant to future reproductive failure due to C. abortus, but they become inapparent carriers and persistently shed the organism from their reproductive tracts during estrus. Chlamydophila pecorum is the other member of the genus that affects small ruminants, and it is recognized as a primary cause of keratoconjunctivitis in sheep and goats and of polyarthritis in sheep.  相似文献

Mycoplasmas have complex mechanisms of antigenic variation that allow them to evade the immune system. These organisms cause a variety of clinical syndromes that can have a significant economic effect on small ruminant production. The syndromes range from acute septicemia and death to chronic infection resulting in decreased production. Recent research findings have shed light on the means by which these organisms evade the host immune response and cause or contribute to the development of disease in the host. This article provides a review of the pathogenesis, clinical signs, and treatment options for common disease syndromes involving Mycoplasma spp. in small ruminants.  相似文献

A survey of strongyle infections was conducted in sheep and goats reared in a traditional e extensive husbandry system in two ecological zones if Nigeria. One zone had a seasonal pattern of infection. The majority of animals had faecal worm parasite egg counts of below 500 eggs per gram. Kids, and lambs younger than 3 months did not carry strongyle worm burdens, and the highest infection rate was found in the 7–12 month age group. A high proportion of small ruminants shed strongyle eggs during the postparturient period.The helminth species found by the use of larval culture techniques on the faeces were: Haemonchus contortus, Trichostrongylus colubriformis and Oesophagostonum columbianum. Adults of the same species were found in the few animals necropsied. The significance of the findings is discussed.  相似文献

Taylor, M. A., Bartram, D. J. The history of decoquinate in the control of coccidial infections in ruminants. J. vet. Pharmacol. Therap.  35 , 417–427. Decoquinate is a quinolone derivative that has been used for over 20 years in the control of coccidiosis in domestic ruminants. Decoquinate treats coccidiosis in lambs and calves and prevents coccidiosis in lambs when administered in feed at a dosage of 1 mg decoquinate/kg bodyweight (b.w.) daily for at least 28 days. It prevents coccidiosis in calves and aids in the prevention of coccidiosis in lambs when administered in calf and ewe feed, respectively, at a dosage of 0.5 mg/kg b.w. daily for at least 28 days. Decoquinate also aids in the prevention of abortions and perinatal losses owing to toxoplasmosis by medication of ewe feed at a dosage of 2 mg/kg b.w. daily, fed continuously for 14 weeks prior to lambing. Several field studies have reported reductions in cryptosporidial oocyst shedding. Decoquinate acts early in the life cycle of Eimeria on sporozoites, released from ingested oocysts, and on first‐generation meronts, arresting development and release of merozoites and thus preventing further damage to the intestines owing to the gametocyte stages. Production benefits associated with the use of decoquinate are due mainly to its action as a coccidiostat rather than any effects on diet utilization or ruminal fermentation.  相似文献

Pyogenic infections of cattle, sheep and goats were examined for the presence of a Gram positive bacterium that has been designated "microaerophilic coccus" by other workers. The bacterium was found to be involved in a range of disease processes, including foot and soft tissue abscesses, mastitis, pericarditis and pyometra in cattle, joint and foot abscesses in sheep and foot abscesses in goats. The characteristic feature of the bacterium was its satellitic growth around colonies of other organisms. The microaerophilic coccus was usually part of a mixed flora, which included Corynebacterium pyogenes, Fusobacterium necrophorum, Peptostreptococcus indolicus and Bacteroides sp.  相似文献

Six hundred and ninety two cattle, slaughtered in various abattoirs in Mali between August 1983 and November 1984 were examined for evidence of Fasciola gigantica and Dicrocoelium hospes infections. A great variation in geographic prevalence was observed. Sufficient knowledge was acquired to demonstrate both the importance of fascioliasis in some areas and also the high prevalence of D. hospes in other areas. We suggest that the difference in prevalence from one geographic area to another is influenced by local climatic conditions, presence or absence of rivers and lakes, and differences in livestock management practices by various ethnic groups.  相似文献

Feces were collected from 107 asymptomatic dogs at a research facility in Guelph, Ontario. The prevalence of Giardia infection was 11% (12/107). To assess the effectiveness of Giardia vaccination for treatment of Giardia carriage, 9 additional asymptomatic Giardia antigen-positive dogs were brought into the facility. The Giardia antigen-positive dogs were then randomly allocated to receive either vaccine (n = 10) or a saline placebo (n = 10). Feces were then monitored monthly for 6 mo for Giardia antigen and Giardia cysts. At weeks 4, 8, 12, and 16 following vaccination, there were more Giardia-positive dogs in the vaccinated group (10/10, 9/10, 9/10, 8/10, respectively) compared with the controls (7/10, 7/10, 8/10, 4/10, respectively). At week 20, an equal number of dogs (5/10) were Giardia positive, and at week 24, fewer dogs were positive in the vaccinated group than in the control group (2/10 versus 5/10, respectively). However, there was no significant difference between the 2 groups. Vaccination was, therefore, not an effective treatment for asymptomatic canine Giardia infections in this setting.  相似文献

Visual evaluation of the occurrence of BAB (born after ban) cases pointed towards spatial clustering. Therefore a statistical analysis of spatial case clustering was conducted using GIS technology. In the initial analysis, all 376 cases (135 BAB, 241 BBB/born before ban) diagnosed through mid of March 2001 were investigated using the spatial scan statistic. Two clusters of BBB cases were identified in the western part of Switzerland, and two clusters of BAB cases in the eastern part. Epidemiological investigations performed within the BAB clusters showed an increased pig density in these cluster regions. Pig density is considered an indicator for the probability of contamination of cattle feed with feed containing meat-and-bone meal that is intended for other species (cross-contamination). In an updated cluster analysis including all cases reported until end of June 2002 (data set B), clusters were identified in the same regions as previously. It was shown that the BAB clusters occurred in different time periods. The small scale differences in cluster size and location are discussed, with an emphasis on the implications for following epidemiological investigations.  相似文献

Trophozoites of the protozoan parasite Giardia duodenalis were exposed to various albendazole concentrations for 4 h, washed, fixed and incubated with antibodies raised against albendazole and its two major metabolites albendazole sulphoxide and albendazole sulphone. Tubulin antibodies were also used. A peroxidase- or FITC-conjugated secondary antibody was used to detect the primary antibody with transmission electron microscopy or confocal laser scanning microscopy, respectively. Albendazole, a benzimidazole compound, was detected in the mid-dorsal region of trophozoites, albendazole sulphoxide in the posterior-dorsal region and albendazole sulphone in clusters above the median bodies. Tubulin was recognised in the ventral disk. This is the first indication that G. duodenalis may be capable of metabolising albendazole and the potential path of the metabolised drug traced within the trophozoite. Fluorescence measurements revealed that albendazole sulphoxide binding decreased and albendazole sulphone binding increased with exposure of the trophozoites to increasing albendazole concentration. This indicates that if albendazole was being metabolised by trophozoites, it occurred to a greater extent following exposure to higher albendazole concentrations.  相似文献

Polyomavirus infections in budgerigars, in other parrots as well as in passeriformes have been described in many countries, but not in Switzerland so far. This paper reports on cases of polyomavirus infections in three different bird collections in Switzerland. The first outbreak occurred in a mixed collection of passeriformes, the second in a collection of parrotlets (Genus Forpus), and the third in a large groups of parrots (Psittaciformes), of which only one recently acquired Kea (Nestor notabilis) was affected. The clinical symptoms, gross necropsy changes and histopathologic findings are described. The presence of avian polyomavirus was confirmed by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR).  相似文献
