A total of 27 non-indigenous fish species has been introduced into the waters of The Netherlands, mainly during the 19th and 20th centuries: 12 European, 11 North American, 3 Asian and 1 South American species. Most of the introductions were made deliberately, some accidentally. Nearly all of the introduced fish are true freshwater species (23), the others are anadromous (4). The introductions were made with the aims of restocking declining populations of commercially important species, introducing new species as substitutes for the former, establishing new fisheries or for culture to produce fish for consumption, ornament and game. The extensive and prolonged attempts to restock inland waters with various salmonids have never met with success. The introduction of non-indigenous salmonids (e.g. chinook, lake whitefish) was also a failure. Even at the beginning of this century the inland waters of The Netherlands had become unsuitable for salmonids because of environmental deterioration although that was not understood at the time. The release of rainbow trout into natural waters is unsuccessful as they will not reproduce. Apart from the carp, the most successful introduction since mediaeval times has been the pikeperch (1901) which at present is the second most important freshwater species for fisheries. Four North American species, probably accidentally released, are fully acclimatized in our waters, and are even locally common. We aimed to investigate proximate and fatty acid composition of important freshwater fish species in the Czech Republic. Sampled fish include seven species from intensive farming: African catfish, rainbow trout, Wels catfish, Nile tilapia, brook trout, northern whitefish, and pikeperch; eight species from semi-intensive culture systems: common carp, northern pike, pikeperch, grass carp, European perch, tench, silver carp, and catfish; and three species from extensive culture systems: rainbow trout, tench, and common carp. The fat content and fatty acid composition were highly influenced by the culture systems. Simultaneously, we observed a significant dependence of fatty acid composition on the fat content. The content of saturated fatty acids was below 34% in all analyzed fish. Northern pike, pikeperch, and European perch contained with over 50% the highest proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Intensively cultured fish reached the highest content of eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic fatty acid. Nutritional quality was determined by atherogenic and thrombogenic indexes which ranged from 0.27 to 0.63 and 0.20 to 0.61 and by ratios n-3/n-6 (0.54–3.45) and polyunsaturated/saturated fatty acids (0.67–2.01). Results demonstrated that the flesh of all studied species are of high nutritional quality.  相似文献

The effect of sulfide on K+ influx pathways was measured in red blood cells (RBCs) of sulfide-sensitive rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and sulfide-tolerant crucian carp (Carassius carassius). In trout RBCs, maximal inhibition of Na+, K+-ATPase was attained at 10 mol l–1 sulfide and amounted to 32% without being influenced by pH between 6.7 and 8.3. Ouabain-resistant K+ influx in the absence and presence of sulfide was insignificant at pH values between 6.7 and 7.7. At higher pH values ouabain-resistant K+ influx increased, but was inhibited to about 15% by 30 mol l–1 sulfide. In RBCs of crucian carp neither Na+, K+-ATPase nor ouabain-resistant K+ influx were affected by sulfide concentrations up to 850 mol l–1. Differences in sulfide-sensitivity of K+ influx between both species can be based upon different properties of the membrane transporter themselves. The reduced Na+, K+-ATPase activity in trout RBCs may also result from a slightly reduced (by 9%) ATP level after sulfide exposure. In addition, intracellular sulfide concentrations were higher in trout RBCs as compared to crucian carp. In trout, intracellular sulfide concentrations reached extracellular levels within 5 min of incubation whereas sulfide concentrations in crucian carp RBCs remained about 2-fold lower than extracellular concentrations. Although the physiological basis of sulfide-insensitive K+ influx in crucian carp RBCs is currently unknown it may contribute to the extremely high sulfide-tolerance of this species.  相似文献

Long-chain unsaturated n-3 fatty acids are of remarkable significance in human nutrition. They have antiatherosclerotic efficacy and other beneficial health effects too. Aquaculture fish, e.g. cyprinids, such as silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix), bighead carp (Aristichthys nobilis), common carp (Cyprinus carpio), tench (Tinca tinca), and salmonids like Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) as well as European catfish (Silurus glanis), Baltic whitefish (Coregonus maraena), European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax), gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata), and Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), are rich in these fatty acids. When fed on suitable diets, the fatty acid composition of cultured fish can be influenced advantageously. Several clinical tests proved the effectiveness of the consumption of farmed fish in promoting human health. Thus, aquaculture fish can be recommended as wholesome food.  相似文献

Proliferative kidney disease (PKD), caused by the myxozoan endoparasite Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae, is of serious ecological and economical concern to wild and farmed salmonids. Wild salmonid populations have declined due to PKD, primarily in rivers, in Europe and North America. Deep lakes are also important habitats for salmonids, and this work aimed to investigate parasite presence in five deep Norwegian lakes. Kidney samples from three salmonid species from deep lakes were collected and tested using real-time PCR to detect PKD parasite presence. We present the first detection of Tbryosalmonae in European whitefish in Norway for the first time, as well as the first published documentation of the parasite in kidneys of Arctic charr, brown trout and whitefish in four lakes. The observed prevalence of the parasite was higher in populations of brown trout than of Arctic charr and whitefish. The parasite was detected in farmed, but not in wild, charr in one lake. This suggests a possible link with a depth of fish habitat and fewer Tbryosalmonae-infected and PKD-affected fish. Towards a warmer climate, cold hypolimnion in deep lakes may act as a refuge for wild salmonids, while cold deep water may be used to control PKD in farmed salmonids.  相似文献

Many species of salmonids have been stocked into waters outside of their native range. The invasiveness and impact of these species on native species varies depending on their biological traits, and on environmental conditions, such as climate. In Japan, rainbow trout and brown trout, both listed in 100 of the world's worst invasive alien species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, occur as non-native species. The invasiveness of these two species is thought to be related to seasonal flooding, given flood waters can physically damage fry and prevent population establishment. Rainbow trout have successfully invaded waters in Hokkaido, northern Japan, where the likelihood of flooding is low between June and July, when their fry emerge, but successful invasions are rare in regions south of Hokkaido. Brown trout, however, have successfully invaded waters not only in Hokkaido, but also other regions. Since brown trout have a similar life history to the native white-spotted charr and masu salmon, with fry emerging before the flood season, they are more suited to the Japanese climate than Rainbow trout. Rainbow and brown trout interact with native species in various ways, but a common outcome of these interactions is the displacement of native charr species. Legal regulations of non-native salmonids should be based on understandings of the ecological traits of each invasive species and regional impacts on native species. Given the ongoing nature of climate change, the nature and extent of the effects of rainbow and brown trout on native species might also change.  相似文献

The early humoral responses of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), and brook trout, Salvelinus fontinalis (Mitchill), with sterile inflammation induced by intraperitoneal Lipogen Triple vaccination were compared to determine if genetic differences in susceptibility to furunculosis in salmonids correlated with different acute phase responses to vaccination. Similar severe acute sterile peritonitis occurred in response to Lipogen Triple in both species. Both species also had a rapid transient reduction in plasma iron concentration at 3 days. Moderate hypoferraemia persisted to day 14 in brook trout, but returned to normal by day 7 in rainbow trout. Plasma zinc decreased sharply 3 days after vaccination in rainbow trout and returned nearly to control levels by day 10; however, plasma zinc did not change in brook trout. Two-dimensional sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide electrophoresis of plasma proteins revealed that increased amounts of a 48-kDa protein group coincided with the hypoferraemic response in rainbow trout. In addition, a modest elevation in a 16-kDa protein group also occurred in rainbow trout. These studies demonstrated the rapid changes in plasma iron in both species and mild elevation of two putative acute phase plasma proteins associated with vaccine-induced inflammation in rainbow trout.  相似文献

Abstract. In an investigation of the occurrence of proliferative kidney disease (PKD) in freshwater fish other than rainbow trout, 18 species of wild fish and seven species of fish raised in cultivation wore sampled from waters where the disease occurred annually in rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Richardson). Results revealed that certain wild stocks of brown trout. Salmo trutta L., grayling, Thymallus thymallus L., and pike, Esox lucius L., were infected with PKD, as were cultivated Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., parr, brown trout and char, Salvelinus alpinus (L.). Microscopical examination revealed the presence of the PKX cell in these species and also intraluminal protozoa possibly related to the PKX cell, which were not found in the rainbow trout. Other species of freshwater fish had myxosporidan infections but, unlike PKD infection, there was little host/parasite tissue response. The PKX cell as a myxosporidan stage is discussed and the presence of the disease in wild fish is reported.  相似文献

Despite long‐standing interest in foraging modes as an important element of animal space use, few studies document and compare individual foraging mode differences among species and ecological conditions in the wild. We observed and compared foraging modes of 61 wild Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus, 42 brown trout, Salmo trutta, and 50 Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar, in their first growing season over a range of habitats in 10 Icelandic streams. We found that although stream salmonids typically sit‐and‐wait to ambush prey from short distances, Arctic charr were more mobile during prey search and prior to prey attack than Atlantic salmon, whereas brown trout were intermediate. In all three species, individuals that were mobile during search were more likely to be moving when initiating attacks on prey, although the strength and the slope of this relationship differed among species. Arctic charr also differed from salmon and trout as more mobile individuals travelled longer distances during prey pursuits. Finally, coupled with published data from the literature, salmonid foraging mobility (both during search and prior to attack) clearly decreased from still water habitats (e.g., brook charr), to slow‐running waters (e.g., Arctic charr) to fast‐running waters (e.g., Atlantic salmon). Hence, our study suggests that foraging mode of young salmonids can vary distinctly among related species and furthers our understanding of the behavioural mechanisms shaping the geographical distribution of wild salmonids.  相似文献

The distribution and kinetics of LDH isoenzymes in red and white muscles of 5 species of salmonids, 4 species of cyprinids and one coregonid species were studied. In all species the white muscles are characterized by the occurrence of only the most cathodic isoenzymes, or groups of isoenzymes. The red muscles contained either the full set of isoenzymes (cyprinids) or a selection in which the anodic forms dominated (salmonids, coregonid). The most striking difference between the two types of muscle was met inCoregonus sp. The temperature profiles of pyruvate affinity are similar in all species of fish studied. On the other hand, Km(pyr) values and degree of pyruvate inhibition are closely related and vary greatly with temperature, with the taxonomic position (and thus biology) of the species, and with electrophoresic mobility of the isoenzyme. Highest affinity and strongest inhibition occurred in the anodic (H4) isoenzymes of cyprinids at low temperature; lowest affinity and zero inhibition in the cathodic isoenzymes (M4 M4) of salmonids and coregonids at high temperature. In salmonids the more recently duplicated loci of the M-group of isoenzymes possess identical Km values at all temperatures, whereas the two older M and H loci differ greatly in this respect. Thus the more recent duplication of LDH loci in salmonids and coregonids may be seen as a mechanism by which the tetramers required for LDH activity can be constructed from more closely related subunits than are provided by the older M and H loci.Some problems in connection with the determination of the kinetic constants of the lactate oxidase reaction are discussed and it is suggested that an alkaline, pyruvate trapping system provides conditions which are more realistic than those of other assay systems. The Km(lactate) values found are in the biological range and, at 20°C, provide further circumstantial evidence that the red muscles of fish should be capable of oxidizing the lactate produced by the white muscles during strenuous exercise. At 4°C the Km(lactate) values are abnormally high in all muscle preparations and thus are not correlated with the Km(pyruvate) values which are lowest at this temperature.  相似文献

Abstract –  To address the dearth of information on tagging effects and long-term survivorship of tagged fish in native and introduced species, laboratory and field investigations were undertaken on three non-native fish species (pumpkinseed Lepomis gibbosus ; topmouth gudgeon Pseudorasbora parva ; pikeperch Sander lucioperca ) tagged with coded-wire (CW), passive integrated transponder (PIT), radio (RT) telemetry and/or acoustic tags (AT), with survivorship of native brown trout ( Salmo trutta ) examined in the field. Laboratory results revealed high survivorship following tag attachment/insertion and resumption of feeding within 24–48 h of tagging (all mortalities could be attributed to an unrelated outbreak of fungal infection), with retention rates being high in both pumpkinseed and pikeperch but low in topmouth gudgeon (excluded from field studies). In the field, short-term post-operation survival was high in pikeperch, pumpkinseed and brown trout. In pumpkinseed and trout, 100% of RT fish survived a 24–30 day tracking study, with 60% and 80%, respectively, recaptured alive at least 3 months post-tagging. Of PIT tagged pumpkinseed, 44% were recaptured (after 6–18 months), with small-sized, CW-tagged fish (0.38 g weight) captured up to 1 year after tagging. In pikeperch, all AT fish except one (the smallest specimen) survived their full expected tracking period (i.e. tag life) – the single lost specimen survived at least half of its expected tracking period (i.e. 6 month battery life). Overall, the tagging methods used were highly effective in pumpkinseed and pikeperch, showing good retention and survival, but PIT tagging of topmouth gudgeon was plagued by low survivorship and tag rejection.  相似文献

Blood samples from carp and trout were exposed to overnight tonometry in the presence of noradrenaline to obtain isosmotic cell swelling. The intracellular fixed acid Bohr factor (fa(i)) were then measured and compared to the values for unswollen cells (Holk and Lykkeboe 1995). An increase in oxygen affinity appeared for both carp and trout. Part of this increase could be explained by a lower content of organic phosphates, whereas the rest of the increase was ascribed to changes in the association constants of at least one of the phosphate-hemoglobin or oxygen-hemoglobin complexes. However, in spite of a marked swelling and a slightly lower content of organic phosphates, no change in the fa(i) appeared.  相似文献

Rainbow trout were infused continuously for 12h with epinephrine in the presence or absence of alpha-and/or beta-adrenergic blockade to characterize the specific adrenergic mechanisms involved in the control of blood acid-base status and oxygen transport capacity. Infusion of epinephrine, alone, produced a transient respiratory acidosis, as indicated by an increase in carbon dioxide tension and a decrease in whole blood pH, yet arterial oxygen tension was elevated. Red blood cell pH increased by approximately 0.2 pH units during epinephrine infusion and this increase as well as the increase in oxygen tension were prevented by pretreatment with propranolol (a beta-adrenergic antagonist). Epinephrine infusion during alpha-adrenergic blockade caused a prolonged elevation of blood carbon dioxide tension and abolished the increases in hematocrit and hemoglobin concentrations observed during epinephrine infusion alone. Infusion of the alpha-adrenergic agonists phenylephrine (an alpha1 agonist) or clonidine (an alpha2 agonist) caused respiratory acidosis (decreased pH, increased CO2 tension) and a reduction in oxygen tension. Infusion of isoprenaline (a non-specific beta agonist) caused delayed increases in carbon dioxide and oxygen tensions. We speculate that the increased carbon dioxide tension observed during epinephrine infusion is a result of beta-adrenoceptor mediated inhibition of red blood cell bicarbonate dehydration and not branchial convective or diffusive adjustments. The effects of epinephrine on blood O2 tension, content and carrying capacity are discussed with reference to the participation of alpha- and beta-adrenergic mechanisms at the gill, spleen and red blood cell.  相似文献

Freshwater fish species and Baltic salmon (Salmo salar) are important to small-scale fisheries in Finland and Sweden. The formerly local markets for these species have expanded as trade has been opened up to international competition. In this study we use cointegration analysis to test the spatial integration of freshwater fish markets in Finland and between Finland and Sweden. The analysed fish species are salmon, perch (Perca fluviatilis), pikeperch (Sander lucioperca), European whitefish (Goregonus lavaretus) and pike (Exos lucius), and the data covers ex-vessel prices from 1993 or 1995 to 2004. We found that the regional prices in Finland were cointegrated. This indicates that the prices are determined on a single market in Finland. Moreover, the study suggests that Finnish and Swedish markets in Baltic salmon, whitefish, pikeperch and perch were partially integrated, while integration of pike markets could not be found. The political implication is that an essential part of the local small-scale fisheries’ operational environment is determined outside the national borders.  相似文献

Rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, were exposed to 48h of environmental hypoxia (water partial pressure of oxygen = 8.0 kPa) at either 5 or 15°C. Blood was sampled during hypoxia via a dorsal aorta cannula to measure arterial blood partial pressure of oxygen and plasma catecholamine concentrations. After 48h, the number (Bmax) and dissociation constant (Kd) of red blood cell surface -adrenoceptors were determined using a radioligand-displacement binding assay. At 5°C, plasma catecholamine levels were elevated at 24h whereas at 15°C, levels were elevated at 48h. At either temperature, following 48h of hypoxia, there was no change in Bmax or Kd of red blood cell surface -adrenoceptors, compared to normoxic control fish. This study demonstrates that chronic exposure to moderate hypoxia does not affect the number or affinity of cell surface -adrenoceptors on trout red blood cells.  相似文献

  • 1. The lacustrine brown trout (Salmo trutta) is endangered and of high conservation importance. In the only spawning habitat of the population in the Bavarian Lake Walchensee, the River Obernach, a substantial decrease in spawning runs has been reported. In this study, the present ecological state of the spawning stream was analysed with the objective of identifying life‐stage specific limitations to successful recruitment attributable to deficiencies in (i) spawning migration, (ii) spawning habitat quality, and (iii) habitat quality for juveniles.
  • 2. Structural stream analysis showed that discharge and several migration barriers — particularly near the river outlet into the lake — prevent successful spawning migrations at normal water levels. Migration barriers are probably the main limiting factor for reproduction of lacustrine brown trout, whereas structural variability of the Obernach meets the habitat requirements of both spawners and juveniles.
  • 3. Spawning site quality was suitable for trout, as indicated by stream substratum texture and high exchange rates between free‐flowing water and the interstitial zone in physico‐chemical parameters (redox potential, dissolved oxygen, pH, temperature and conductivity).
  • 4. Analyses of fish community structure revealed dominance of lithophilic species, in particular of riverine brown trout (Salmo trutta). Its density and intact demographic population structure suggest that spawning and juvenile habitat quality for salmonids is not limiting. Recapture of stocked lacustrine trout juveniles also indicates habitat suitability for the juvenile stage.

In conclusion, the results show that the methodology used in this study is suitable for the identification of life‐stage specific habitat deficiencies in lacustrine brown trout and other fish species. Abstract  – Brown trout ( Salmo trutta L.) and Arctic charr ( Salvelinus alpinus (L.)) use whitefish ( Coregonus lavaretus (L.)) as their main prey in the subarctic Lake Muddusjärvi. Brown trout dwelled in littoral and pelagic habitat, whereas Arctic charr lived only in epibenthic habitat. Both species shifted to whitefish predation at a length of 20–30 cm. At this size, brown trout fed on larger whitefish than Arctic charr. Whitefish occur in three sympatric forms, differing in their habitat, ecology and morphology. Both the predators preyed primarily upon the small-sized, densely rakered whitefish form (DR), which was the most numerous whitefish form in the lake. DR used both epibenthic and pelagic habitat, whereas two sparsely rakered whitefish forms dwelled (LSR and SSR) only in epibenthic habitat: LSR in littoral and SSR in profundal areas. Sparsely rakered whitefish forms had minor importance in predator diet.  相似文献

Some teleost fishes exhibit a non-linear release of H+ with haemoglobin oxygen saturation (SO2) in whole blood that may be related to the Root effect and a low apparent cooperativity in oxygen binding. To further investigate this correlation, the relationship between red cell pH (pHi) and SO2 was evaluated in two teleost fishes, the carp (Cyprinus carpio) and tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum). Carp possess a relatively small Root effect within the physiological pH range, while that in tambaqui is relatively large. It was therefore hypothesized that both species would possess a non-linear release of H+ with SO2 under in vivo conditions, but that the degree of non-linearity would be less pronounced in carp than in tambaqui. Red cell suspensions of tambaqui showed a marked non-linear relationship between pHi and SO2 at in vivo pH values (pHe=7.66), where the majority of Bohr protons were released between 50 and 100% SO2. In whole blood of carp, the relationship between pHi and SO2 was almost linear at normal resting extracellular pH values (pHe=8.10) where Hills n 50 (cooperativity) was 1.3. Under acidic conditions (pHe=7.11), n 50 decreased to 0.9 and the release of H+ with SO2 became slightly non-linear. The reduction in pH in carp blood was associated with the onset of the Root effect, and the oxygen tension at half saturation (P50) increased from 3.8 to 38.2 mmHg. The relationship between total CO2 and SO2 in carp whole blood changed from being almost linear at pHe 8.1 to being non-linear at pHe 7.1, consistent with the relationship between pHi and SO2. Thus, possession of a Root effect could be a prerequisite for a non-linear release of Bohr protons with oxygenation, but the expression in whole blood may depend upon a species-specific cooperativity threshold. The non-linear release of Bohr protons with oxygenation may be a general phenomenon in teleosts with important implications for gas transport and acid-base homeostasis.  相似文献

Soft water acclimated (Ca2+ 0.02 mM; Na+ 0.03 mM; K+ 0.01 mM; pH 7.0), cannulated brown trout (Salmo trutta) were exposed to various pH and aluminium (Al) regimes (pH 7.0, pH 5.0, pH 5.0 plus Al: 50, 25, and 12.5 g l–1) for up to 5 days in order to determine (i) the sublethal concentration of Al at pH 5.0 for this species (ii) their ionoregulatory and respiratory status. No mortality or physiological disturbances were evident at pH 7.0 or pH 5.0. All trout died within 48 h at pH 5.0 in the presence of Al at 50 g l–1 and 67% died over the 5 day period at pH 5.0 in the presence of Al at 25 g l–1. Fish at these lethal Al concentrations showed significant decreases in arterial blood oxygen content (CaO2) but no changes in plasma osmolarity or the concentrations of plasma Na+, K+ and Cl. Physiological disturbance was more marked at the 50 g l–1 Al concentration. The surviving fish at 25 g l–1 showed few signs of physiological recovery while continually exposed to this regime. No fish died during the exposure to water of pH 5.0 containing 12.5 g l–1 Al, but physiological disturbance was still apparent. These sublethally-stressed trout showed a transient decline in the plasma concentrations of Na+ and Cl–1. Although CaO2 decreased, recovery was evident. The data suggest that in the brown trout, environmental Al concentration is as important as pH and calcium concentration in determining the physiological status of the fish.  相似文献
