The diagnosis and treatment of a case of lead poisoning in a cynomolgus monkey (Macaca fascicularis) are described. The clinical signs were jaundice and amaurosis. Clinicopathological findings suggested cholestasis. A tentative diagnosis of lead poisoning was made when basophilic stippling of erythrocytes was observed in a peripheral blood smear. The diagnosis was confirmed by finding a lead concentration of 2280 micrograms/litre in a venous blood sample. Cage bars painted with red lead appeared to be the source of the poison. The lead was chelated by the intramuscular administration of 2,3 dimercapto-1-propanol (BAL) and calcium disodium edetate for seven days, followed by oral D-penicillamine for five weeks. The encephalopathy was treated with dexamethasone sodium phosphate. Recovery from the blindness was noted after 10 days and marked improvement of the general well being of the animal was observed after one month.  相似文献

Eleven dogs with signs of lead poisoning were examined. The principal clinical signs were neurologic and included ataxia, tremors, clonic-tonic seizures, amaurosis, and deafness. Basophilic stippling and circulating nucleated red cells were not common findings in blood films. Blood lead values varied from 0.22 ppm to 0.63 ppm before treatment. Electroencephalographic changes in nonsedated dogs were marked by intermittent high-amplitude slow wave activity.  相似文献

The loss of production due to footrot and scald is well recognised, as is the use of zinc sulphate footbaths to treat sheep with these diseases. There is also sheep farmer concern over the increasing cost involved in control procedures.  相似文献

Green acorns are known to contain high concentrations of pyrogallol. Here, we describe an extended case report of two pigeons found dead with a filled muscular stomach of acorns. The following pathologic findings were observed: irritation of mucosal membranes in the gastrointestinal tract, blackish discolored chyme, hyperemic organs, and general edemas. The muscular stomach (ventriculus) was filled with pieces of acorns, and the abdominal cavity contained bloody aqueous fluid. In order to uncover the cause of death, we determined pyrogallol in liver and kidney of one dead pigeon and in ventriculus contents of both pigeons by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. A further aim of our study was to compare pathologic findings and pyrogallol concentrations in kidney, liver, and ventriculus of poisoned pigeons with those of healthy pigeons. The pyrogallol concentrations in samples of dead pigeons were 16-1200-fold higher than in control animals fed grass and maize-corn. Altogether, the acorn-filled ventriculus, the pathologic findings, the well nourished state, and the high pyrogallol concentrations in the dead pigeons suggest an acute pyrogallol poisoning by acorn. With respect to controls, we conclude that pyrogallol concentrations of 6 ng/g of kidney, 8 ng/g of liver, and 2 ng/g of gastric content do not affect the health of pigeons.  相似文献

Twenty-seven wild geese (Anser albifrons) suffering from lead poisoning caused by ingestion of lead shot were treated with disodium calcium ethylenediaminetetraacetate. The concentration of lead in blood ranged from 0.4 to 23.0 micrograms/ml, with a mean concentration of 5.6 micrograms/ml. In 22 of the birds, 1 to 48 lead pellets (mean, 10.5 pellets/bird) were seen on radiographs of their gizzards. Eleven of 27 birds recovered 3 to 8 weeks after the initiation of treatment. In the birds that recovered, the lead pellets were rapidly eroded as the birds recovered their appetites in response to treatment, and disappeared radiographically between treatment days 17 and 52. The birds that did not survive died within 4 weeks, despite decreased concentrations of lead in blood. Of these 16 birds, 15 had radiographic evidence of impaction of the proventriculus at the first examination and no evidence of resolution of the impaction at the time of death. In contrast, only 2 of the 11 geese that recovered had impaction of the proventriculus at the time of admission. Thus, the condition of the proventriculus seems to be the first consideration to evaluate in the prognosis of lead poisoning in geese.  相似文献

Adult mallard ducks were administered steel pellets to determine the rate of excretion from the gastrointestinal tract. In separate studies the ducks were administered 5 number 6 lead pellets. Birds were examined for clinical signs and sacrificed at given intervals over a 20 day period to assess changes in tissue structure and concentrations of lead with time. The above studies were conducted in 2 groups of ducks, fed a low or a high fiber diet. The rate of steel pellet excretion on birds on the low fiber diet decreased with an increase in pellet size. Pellet excretion was greatly reduced in birds fed the high fiber diet. Administration of lead shot resulted in the development of green diarrhea, anorexia and weakness. It also produced high concentrations of lead in the blood, kidney, liver and bone with lower concentrations in skeletal muscle. The major lesions were destruction of the mitotically active proventricular epithelium and medullary osteocytes, destruction of pectoral muscle cells and the presence of intranuclear inclusion bodies in the proximal tubular epithelium of the kidneys. Birds on the high fiber diet demonstrated more severe clinical signs and higher concentrations of lead in the tissues.  相似文献

Data on blood glucose concentration in bulls affected with molasses associated polioencephalomalacia are controversial. It has been suggested that the brain lesions are related to a "hypoglycemic state" during the development of polioencephalomalacia. This paper reports the mobilization of glucose by means of the epinephrine test in three bulls fed two diets, one forage based and the other molasses based. The results showed significantly greater hyperglycemic responses in the animals during the molasses diet than during the forage one. This probably means that glucose stores (as glycogen) are higher in cattle consuming molasses than those consuming forage. Such hepatic glucose output is in disagreement with the hypoglycemia theory as the cause of the early stages of brain lesions and focuses the probable cause as being related to glucose utilization.  相似文献

Two hound-type dogs from the same kennel were admitted in terminal stages of congestive heart failure. An investigation revealed the owner had been feeding the dogs cottonseed meal daily with their kibbled meal. Gossypol toxicosis from feeding this meal caused marked abnormalities in myocardial contractility. Although in severe congestive heart failure, one dog had only minimal dilatation of its heart, as revealed by thoracic radiography. Disseminated intravascular coagulopathy also was diagnosed in this dog. Gossypol is a cumulative toxin; the amount of free gossypol fed was approximately 5.4 to 5.7 mg/kg/day for an unknown duration.  相似文献

The incompatibility of the anticoccidial monensin and the antibiotic tiamulin when administered simultaneously to chickens is well documented. Signs similar to monensin poisoning have been seen in turkeys given these two drugs together in field cases. This work describes a preliminary trial in which simultaneous administration of therapeutic doses resulted in acute severe poisoning with a high mortality.  相似文献

The thiamin status (thiamin concentration in whole blood, plasma, and erythrocytes; erythrocyte transketolase activity) of normal cattle consuming varying diets did not differ from that of cattle with polioencephalomalacia or lead poisoning. Dairy cattle had higher ruminal content of thiamin and lower thiamin destroying activity than did beef cattle. Renal oxalosis was no more frequent in cattle which had polioencephalomalacia than in postnatal calves. In normal beef cattle, approximately 75% of total blood thiamin is in erythrocytes and the remainder in plasma.  相似文献

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 3-year-old spayed female Labrador Retriever was evaluated for progressive lameness of the left forelimb 21 months after being shot in the elbow with a lead bullet. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Physical examination findings were consistent with moderate osteoarthritis of the left elbow joint. Orthogonal radiographic views of the elbow revealed multiple metallic fragments in and around the joint space as well as signs of osteoarthritis. TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: The elbow joint was evaluated arthroscopically. A lead-based bullet fragment was seen in the lateral synovial compartment and removed in multiple pieces. Excess fibrin and synovium were removed, and microfractures were created in exposed subchondral bone to stimulate neovascularization and fibrocartilage formation. In a follow-up telephone conversation 4 months after surgery, the owner reported a marked improvement in the lameness. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Removal of lead intra-articular foreign bodies may be indicated even if the material is not believed to mechanically interfere with joint motion.  相似文献
