Study on ectoparasitic skin defects and their impact on the tanning industry was carried out from November 2008 to March 2009. The objectives of the study were to identify the type of skin defects due to ectoparasitic skin diseases that caused downgrading and rejection of pickled sheep and wet blue goat skins at Sheba tannery. A cross-sectional study of pickled and wet blue goat skins processed in Sheba tannery was used as subjects of the study. Accordingly, 700 pickled sheep and 700 wet blue goat skins from each stage were randomly examined to identify the type of skin damage in the tannery. Each selected skin was sorted by size and examined for defects in natural light by skin selectors, and defects on each skin were recorded, and skins were graded into seven grades. The study revealed that scratch was the dominant defect with prevalences of 43.86% and 44.84%, respectively. The prevalence of defect observed in wet blue goat skins due to demodectic mange was 7.74%, while in pickled sheep skins, this was 0%. There was a statistically significant difference (P < 0.05) in the prevalence of cockle (“ekek”) lesions between pickled sheep skin and wet blue goat skin. Although significant association (P < 0.05) was observed between cockle and scratch on both skin types, no association (P > 0.05) was seen between scratch and scar.  相似文献

Epitheliogenesis imperfecta has been reported in several animal species, and its inheritance is suspected to be autosomal recessive. This term has been used to describe two different diseases, namely epidermolysis bullosa and aplasia cutis congenita, which are both grossly characterized by an absence of epidermis or mucosal epithelium and are most frequently reported on the distal limbs and oral cavity. Epitheliogenesis imperfecta has been described in swine, but the literature on the subject is scarce. To better characterize this condition, 70 piglets with congenital skin defects macroscopically compatible with epitheliogenesis imperfecta were examined. In all but 1 case, only 1 piglet per litter was affected. Of the affected piglets, 65 (93%) were male, suggesting a sex-related problem. More than half of the piglets had multiple skin lesions. All defects were located on the caudal half of the body, and none was found in the oral cavity. Most lesions were characterized by an absence of epidermis and part of the dermis and adnexae. Adnexal dysplasia was also observed at several sites, both with and without epitheliogenesis imperfecta, suggesting a developmental problem. Fluid-filled, congenital subcutaneous bullae were noted grossly on 7 piglets; their relationship, if any, with epitheliogenesis imperfecta remains unknown. As the term epitheliogenesis imperfecta has been used in cases of epidermolysis bullosa, the term aplasia cutis congenita seems to be more appropriate to describe these lesions in swine.  相似文献

Background: Ehlers-Danlos syndrome comprises a group of rare inherited connective tissue diseases characterized by skin hyperextensibility, joint laxity, skin and vessel fragility, and poor wound healing.
Objective: The purpose of this report was to describe the clinical, histologic, and ultrastructural findings in 2 dogs with collagenopathies consistent with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.
Methods: Two dogs were examined clinically; skin extensibility index was calculated. Skin biopsies obtained from the dorsum were examined by light and electron microscopy.
Results: Both dogs had clinical signs of skin hyperextensibility and fragility, lower skin elasticity, vessel fragility, and poor wound healing. One dog had a hip dislocation, and the other had bilateral medial patellar luxation (grade II), subcutaneous hematomas produced by minimal trauma, and generalized periodontitis. Histologic and ultrastructural examination confirmed abnormalities in the structure and arrangement of collagen fibrils. Fibroblasts were characterized by variable dilatation of the rough endoplasmic reticulum, and anomalous elastic fibers (elaunin fibers) were present in the dermis.
Conclusion: Although the primary defects underlying collagenopathies in animals are still unknown, analysis of the ultrastructural changes in collagen fibrils and clinical findings could facilitate better characterization of these disorders in dogs.  相似文献

Fibrinous pericarditis, fibrinous pleuritis and pneumonia associated with Streptococcus zooepidemicus were observed in two lambs in a small flock of sheep. These lesions were reproduced in lambs inoculated intratracheally with Streptococcus zooepidemicus. Clinical signs included pyrexia, serous to mucopurulent nasal discharge, dyspnea and depression followed by death in six to seven days. Histologically the tissue changes were characterized by an acute inflammatory response involving bronchioles and alveoli, fibrinous pleuritis and fibrinous pericarditis.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine (1) the frequency and extent of complications associated with thoracodorsal axial pattern flap reconstruction of forelimb skin defects in dogs and (2) outcome after treatment of such complications. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective clinical study. SAMPLE POPULATION: Ten dogs. METHODS: Medical records for 10 dogs that had a thoracodorsal axial pattern skin flap reconstruction of a forelimb skin defect were reviewed. RESULTS: Three dogs had complete flap survival. Partial necrosis of the distal flap, ranging from an estimated 2% to 53% (mean, 21%) of the flap surface area, occurred in 7 dogs. Six dogs required surgical management of the skin necrosis, resulting in successful resolution in 5 dogs, whereas, in 2 dogs, the wound healed by second intention. Positive bacterial cultures were obtained from 3 dogs with distal flap necrosis. Seroma formation was noted in 2 dogs; the entire flap survived in 1 dog, whereas the second dog developed distal flap necrosis. Edema and bruising of the distal portion of the flap were noted in 8 dogs; distal flap necrosis subsequently developed in 7 dogs. Partial incisional dehiscence, which healed by second intention, occurred in 2 dogs. Of 6 owners available for follow-up, all were satisfied with the functional outcome, but 1 owner was not satisfied with the cosmetic appearance. CONCLUSIONS: Partial flap necrosis was a frequent complication of thoracodorsal axial pattern flap reconstruction of forelimb skin defects and required additional wound care or surgical intervention to achieve healing. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Thoracodorsal axial pattern flaps can provide full-thickness skin coverage of extensive skin defects of the forelimb, but owners should be aware of the likelihood of local wound complications.  相似文献

Maternal feeding of the lathyrogen aminoacetonitrile, the range plant Lupinus caudatus, and an extract of this plant — expected to contain lathyrogens if present in the plant — all produced clinically similar congenital defects in calves. The defects included excessive flexure, malpositioning, malalignment and rotation of the front limbs. The results suggest a possible relationship between lathyrism and lupine-induced crooked calf disease.  相似文献

A modification of a gel diffusion precipitin test (GDPT) was used to detect antibodies for Moraxella bovis (M. bovis) in the sera of cattle affected with bovine infectious keratoconjunctivitis (BIK). The test was also used for the detection of sequential antibody development in cattle vaccinated with cultures of M. bovis. Also, strains of M. bovis isolated from cattle herds affected with BIK were characterized serologically as a part of an identification scheme using the test.

A comparison of the antigenic properties of various strains of M. bovis and M. bovis-like organisms was conducted using the test. The results indicated that there might be antigenic relationships between M. bovisand M. bovis-like organisms such as Moraxella liquefaciens, Moraxella nonliquefaciens, an unidentified hemolytic diplococcus, Mima polymorpha, Mima polymorpha var. oxidans and Herellea vaginicola

The authors suggest that the GDPT can be used for serological studies of BIK, and the identification and antigenic analysis of M. bovis. They indicate, however, that a more definitive study is needed to evaluate the reliability of the test for quantitative work.

Thirteen adult rabbits and 15 weanling rabbits exhibiting signs of diarrhea were subjected to pathological and bacteriological examination. The lesions in 11 of the adult rabbits consisted of a cecocolitis that was characterized by edema of the gut wall, necrosis of the mucosa, and serosal hemorrhages. Also, five of these 11 rabbits exhibited liver lesions consistent with Tyzzer's disease. Lesions in the weanling rabbits were minimal with only two animals exhibiting focal necrosis of the mucosa and one animal exibiting necrosis of the mesenteric lymph nodes. All animals of each age group exhibited pneumonitis. Escherichia coli was present in high numbers (approximately 1012 organisms per g dry wt contents) in the cecum of eight of 13 adult and 12 of 15 weanling rabbits. Thirteen of these isolates were serotype O128:B12. Preliminary attempts to reproduce the disease in young adult rabbits by a series of per os inoculations of an isolate of E. coli (serotype O128:B12) plus intramuscular inoculation of prednisone resulted in the induction of diarrhea in two of four rabbits. The gross and histological lesions in these two animals were similar to those of the spontaneously occurring cases, consisting of edema of the cecal wall, necrosis of the mucosa, and serosal hemorrhages. Numerous white spots of focal necrosis occurred in the liver. No intracellular organisms resembling Tyzzer's disease agent were evident in any sections examined. Inoculation of either E. coli or prednisone alone did not induce diarrhea. Subsequent attempts to reproduce the disease by these methods were unsuccessful. In spite of this inability to repeat the experimental results, it was felt that this study indicated a possible role of E. coli in rabbit diarrhea, either as an etiological agent or as a secondary invader.  相似文献

The mammary glands of 1000 slaughtered sows were examined with regard to defects in teats, skin and parenchyma. For its clinical importance it is to be emphasized that 23% of all sows showed symptoms of chronic mastitis (phlegmon, abscess, granuloma, fibrosis). It can be expected that a thorough examination of the porcine mamma during the stage of involution will discover disturbances of nursing, caused by lesions in the parenchyma or in the lactiferous ducts.  相似文献

Controlled tissue expansion using a 100 cc rectangular silicone elastomer expander was performed in the mid-antebrachium and mid-crus of eight adult mixed-breed dogs. Two expander inflation schedules were followed. Group 1 dogs (n = 4) underwent expander inflation using 10 cc sterile saline every other day, and group 2 dogs (n = 4) underwent expander inflation using 15 cc sterile saline every other day until the nominal volume (100 cc) was attained. Significant mean postexpansion increases in skin surface area of 94.1 cm2 (35.9%) and 108.9 cm2 (37.3%) were measured in the antebrachium and crus, respectively (p < .05). In a second procedure, the expanders were removed and skin flaps were developed from the redundant tissue generated during the expansion process. Single pedicle advancement flaps and transposition flaps were used to cover surgically created defects measuring 5 times 10 cm in the antebrachium and cms. Single pedicle advancement flaps consistently measured 10 × 10 cm and could be advanced to cover defects involving one third of the mid-antebrachial or mid-crural circumference. Transposition flaps were rotated up to 170 and the donor site defects were easily closed under minimal or no tension. Complications included an abscess in one dog and seroma formation in four dogs. Differences in success or complication rates between group 1 dogs and group 2 dogs were not observed; an accelerated inflation schedule using 15 cc sterile saline every other day was recommended.  相似文献

Bald thigh syndrome (BTS) is a disease limited to Greyhound dogs. It is characterized clinically and grossly by bilateral hair loss on the lateral and caudal thighs. The cause of BTS is unknown but may be associated with hypothyroidism or hyperadrenocorticism. Samples of skin, thyroid glands, and adrenal glands from 43 Greyhound dogs with BTS were examined microscopically. Microscopic changes were characterized by dilatation of follicular infundibula, presence of catagen follicles and epidermal hyperplasia. Changes in the skin from these Greyhound dogs suggest an endocrinopathy as the cause; however, we were unable to confirm which one.  相似文献

Acute Atypical Bovine Pneumonia Caused by Ascaris Lumbricoides   总被引:4,自引:2,他引:2       下载免费PDF全文
A case of acute atypical pneumonia (bovine asthma, pulmonary emphysema, or pulmonary adenomatosis) occurred in a group of cross-bred beef type yearlings in late autumn. Clinical signs included a forced expiratory grunt, excessive salivation, ruminal stasis and, on auscultation over the lungs, pulmonary emphysema and oedema. The cattle had been brought in from a poor summer pasture and housed in a pig pen heavily contaminated with Ascaris lumbricoides eggs as it had contained unwormed feeder pigs all summer.

Fifteen out of seventeen head were affected ten days following housing and all within twenty-four hours. One steer of the group died and at necropsy fourth stage A. lumbricoides larvae were isolated from lungs showing profuse oedema and some emphysema. Histopathological examinations of the lungs showed a diffuse interstitial pneumonia. All remaining animals appeared clinically normal six days following the outbreak.

In winter 2003-04, large numbers of budgerigars (Mellopsitacus undulatus) and cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus) fell ill and died in a large parrot-breeding aviary in Slovakia. In budgerigars, the disease outbreak occurred at the age of 2-3 weeks; cockatiels died within their first 7 days of life. In budgerigars, symptoms of the disease included delayed growth, tremor, darkish discoloration of skin, quill bleeding, and feathering defects. cockatiels often died without any symptoms and with a full crop; feathering defects occurred sporadically. Electron microscopy with negative staining of aqueous lysates of the affected skin and of bleeding quills showed isolated or clustered polyomavirus particles 45-50 nm in size. Long filamentous forms of the virus were also found in virion clusters of skin lysates from the budgerigars. In ultrathin sections through the pathologically altered skin tissue of budgerigars, virus particles were present in both nuclei and cytoplasm of epidermal cells, often in crystalline form. In infected cells, enlarged nuclei showed an extensive chromatin margination. On the DNA level, presence of a polyomavirus infection was conclusively proved by the polymerase chain reaction using avian polyomavirus (APV)-specific primers. A sequence analysis of the gene encoding viral protein (VP)1 and of the combined region for VP2 and VP3 proteins revealed a previously undescribed synonymous mutation in this isolate. This report extended the knowledge of the area of APV occurrence and of the spectrum of hosts in the context of genomic and morphologic variability of APV isolates.  相似文献

We developed a single-pedicle, axial pattern tubed skin flap that could be transferred to an in vitro perfusion apparatus. On the basis of results of prosections, angiography, contact radiography, and surviving-length studies, it was concluded that a single-pedicle, axial pattern skin flap measuring 4 cm x 12 cm incorporating the caudal superficial epigastric artery would survive to its entire length. Subsequently, a surgical (stage 1) procedure was developed for the routine preparation of single-pedicle, axial pattern tubed skin flaps. Healing after the stage-1 procedure was evaluated by visual inspection and fluorescein angiography. Stage-1 procedures were performed successfully 149 of 160 (93%) times. A second surgical (stage 2) procedure was developed for routine cannulation of the caudal superficial epigastric artery and harvest of the tubed skin flap. Stage-2 procedures were performed successfully 136 of 144 (94%) times.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To record a previously unreported congenital and hereditary condition affecting the eyes and skin in the cavalier King Charles spaniel. METHODS: Nineteen cases (13 litters) were investigated, with particular reference to eye and skin clinical signs. In addition, five generation pedigrees were obtained and studied from all cases with the exception of one. RESULTS: The eye signs were due to keratoconjunctivitis sicca, a common ocular disease in the dog, but rarely of congenital origin. The skin signs were of an ichthyosiform dermatosis; ichthyosis being a rare skin disease in the dog. In human beings, ichthyosis is a similar disease, mainly inherited and with a neonatal onset, and sometimes accompanied by other developmental defects. In the cavalier King Charles spaniel, the coat abnormality was noted at birth by the breeders as a 'curly coat', with deterioration of the skin signs as the animal became adult. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: These two conditions occurring together in this breed is well recognised by some breeders but rarely by the veterinary profession. Successful treatment is not possible, although some improvement, particularly of the keratoconjunctivitis sicca, can be obtained. The probable hereditary nature of the condition is an important factor for control.  相似文献

Necropsy at various intervals of three week old pigs following experimental infection with larvae of Strongyloides ransomi showed distribution of the larvae through the body during the first 24 hours. Quiescent larvae at the 24 hour necropsy, as indicated by higher recovery before and after this period may be an indication of physiological changes preceding a moult. Whether or not a moult occurs in the lung prior to migration of the larvae to the intestine has not been determined. At the 72 hour necropsy, larvae were largely confined to the lung and juvenile worms were beginning to appear in the small intestine. Migration to the small intestine was completed by the 96 hour necropsy. Lesions were observed in the skin and lungs up to the 96 hour necropsy, and lymphocytic accumulations were observed in the skin and lungs to this point and lymphocytic accumulations were observed in the liver to the 72 hour necropsy. At 28 days post-application lung lesions were still evident and the duodenum and jejunum were heavily parasitized.

Egg passage began on the sixth day post-application and peaked on the 12th day.

In 2011, Trypanosoma equiperdum reemerged in Italy, almost 10 years after its last appearance. A total of eight infected horses have been observed to date. Six horses were affected by natural outbreaks of the disease, whereas two were infected experimentally. The aim of this study was to offer a recent perspective on clinical cases of dourine in Europe. Investigation of the clinical aspects confirmed the three stages reported in the literature: stage 1 (genital lesions), stage 2 (cutaneous signs), and stage 3 (nervous signs). The most common signs in the horses under study were notable weight loss, edematous skin eruptions and oedemas of the abdomen, mammary glands and hind legs. Three animals presented neurological signs (lip ptosis of lower lip and ataxia). Infections were paucisymptomatic or asymptomatic in some animals. Hyperthermia was not reported in infected animals and considerable anemia was observed. High antibody titers did not always correspond to clinical signs. Positive polymerase chain reaction test results of blood or tissue (skin, eye swab) often correspond to an advanced stage of the disease. Dourine is a variable disease; owing to its low prevalence and chronic manifestation, it can be difficult to make a quick diagnosis when facing a Dourine-positive horse.  相似文献

Bacteriostatic doses of 5-methyltryptophan and of 7-azatryptophan exert a complete inhibition on the in vitro production of filtrable hemolysin by Escherichia coli. This inhibition is readily overcome by L-tryptophan, and does not seem to be specific but secondary to an interference with de novo protein synthesis and cell multiplication as is observed with chloramphenicol in sensitive strains. Although the influence of the two tryptophan analogs on hemolysin production and cell multiplication is similar, their mechanism of action at the molecular level appears to be different.

The addition of 50 µg/ml 7-azatryptophan which causes an unbalanced growth characterized by an arrest of the cellular division and an increase of cell size, blocks the production of an active hemolysin. Exposure to 4 µg/ml 5-methyltryptophan also prevents cell multiplication and hemolysin production but no sign of unbalanced growth is evident. Mitomycin C in concentrations sufficient to prevent increase in the number of viable units provokes an extreme elongation of E. coli cells and, apparently, does not stop the synthesis of hemolysin. In blocking the production of hemolysin the three inhibitors of protein synthesis used in this study were more effective than mitomycin C an agent known to affect deoxyribonucleic acid synthesis and to induce extrachromosomic genetic factors. Results of conjugation experiments also described here support the finding of other workers that the genetic factor that controls the production of the filtrable hemolysin in E. coli can be transmitted by conjugation. Acridine orange eliminated the hemolytic property from a large proportion of the population of a hemolytic strain which did not carry the R factor, but was little effective in the strains which had received both the R factor and the hemolytic character by conjugation.

Skin expansion was used in three horses, one heifer, and one dog to aid in the repair of cosmetic defects. Skin expansion was produced by inserting an expandable silicone device subcutaneously and gradually inflating the device with saline. Skin expansion allowed skin to be mobilized and sutured over cosmetic defects without excessive tension. A successful outcome was achieved in four of the five cases reported here. In one animal, two attempts to create a pocket for a silicone prosthesis failed because the expanders ruptured. Complications included implant failure, wound dehiscence, and exposure of an expander. Skin expansion can be used to enable closure of skin defects in areas where skin tension usually precludes repair by local transposition.  相似文献

Objective— To describe the location of the lateral thoracic artery (LTA), determine dimensions of an axial pattern flap based on this artery, and report use of this flap in 2 cats.
Study Design— Ex vivo study and case reports.
Animals— Cat cadavers (n=8); cats (n=2) with thoracic limb skin defects.
Methods— Dissection of the LTA was carried out on 1 side of each cadaver and the contralateral side was used for injection studies. In 4 specimens, the LTA was cannulated and injected with positive contrast material and the flap was raised and radiographed. In 4 specimens, the flap was injected with methylene blue. Adequacy of flap injection was subjectively evaluated and leakage of methylene blue from the cut edge was noted.
Results— The cutaneous location of the LTA caudal to the triceps muscle was confirmed. Mean flap size was 8.7 cm × 15.5 cm for a mature, averaged-sized cat. Perfusion of the entire flap was demonstrated and viability of the flap was confirmed in 2 clinical cases.
Conclusion— The LTA flap is useful for repair of skin defects of the brachium and antebrachium in cats.
Clinical Relevance— The LTA flap is an alternative technique for repair of skin defects involving the thoracic limb of cats.  相似文献
