The implementation of carbon-storage efforts in countries experiencing armed conflicts or confronting illegal activities (such as illicit crop cultivation) will permit additional tropical forests to be protected for climate change mitigation. Yet, despite these potential gains, the appropriate design and application of forest conservation and climate change mitigation approaches such as the mechanism for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD +) in such contexts remain little studied. Unanswered questions relate to the propensity of farmers in conflict affected areas to conserve forests for climate change mitigation. Such questions include, for what reasons and under what circumstances would such farmer participate in climate change mitigation activities? In this paper we address these questions by developing an econometric Logit model to understand factors influencing the propensity to conserve forest of farmers from 14 villages in Colombia. These villages are located in a region recognized as a stronghold of guerrilla insurgencies and as the center for illegal crop cultivation. The region was selected as it is also the proposed target area for piloting Colombian government REDD + activities. A household survey (n = 90) showed that four explanatory variables are significantly related to the ‘propensity to conserve forest’. ‘Harvest of non-timber forest products’ (specifically bush meat) positively influences a farmer's propensity to conserve forest. In contrast, higher ‘percentage of forest area’, ‘deforestation for (the production of) subsistence crops’ and ‘harvest of wood product’, each have a negative influence. Overall, results show an already high propensity to conserve forest among farmers (70% of respondents) and indicate their growing propensity toward the conservation of primary forest and management of degraded lands and secondary forest. These results might be attributable to efforts undertaken to reduce the causes of armed-conflicts and ecosystem deterioration, such as enhancement of land tenure security and farmer associations' rules to reduce deforestation. They might also be linked to communities' positive attitudes toward water resources conservation. We conclude that most farmers will not oppose forest conservation as long as it is compatible with their respective livelihood priorities.  相似文献

When screening areas as prospective plantation sites two criteria are of interest: the expected yield at that site and the uncertainty associated with this yield expectation. This paper describes a methodology to enable spatial estimates of uncertainty to be attached to predictions of tree growth in relation to variations in soil depth, nutrient status, and drainage. An environmental sensitivity analysis was applied using the growth model PROMOD to produce site productivity and suitability maps for Eucalyptus globulus (Labill.) on a 1000 m regular grid of Tasmania. Nine productivity surfaces were computed, one for each of three assumed soil-water holding capacities (for soil depths of 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 m — the common classes in Tasmania), combined with three permutations of soil-nutrient rating (the expected rating and one class above and one below this value), and incorporating potential waterlogging estimates. The mean and coefficient of variation was calculated for each 1000 m grid cell in the nine subsequent productivity surfaces. A final plantation suitability grid was then mapped to show areas of the State with predicted high (>25 m3 ha−1per year), moderate (15–25 m3 ha−1 per year), and low productivity (<15 m3 ha−1 per year), each with corresponding high variability (coefficient of variation (CV>30%)) and low variability classes (CV<30%). As no areas had both, high productivity and high variability, only five plantation suitability classes were mapped. Those areas indicated as high productivity/low variation sites have a high probability of being successful E. globulus plantations. Low productivity sites with either high or low variation are very unlikely to be favourable for this species. Moderate productivity sites with low variation are likely to be viable potential plantation sites with relatively low risk, particularly with nutrient amelioration. Moderate productivity sites with high variation might warrant further field investigation to determine if there are major environmental factors or combinations of these, such as soil depth (water holding capacity), nutrient status, or drainage that are actually going to be limiting reasonable growth at these sites.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine if spatially-explicit commercial timber inventories (CTI) could be used in conjunction with satellite imagery to improve timber assessments and forest biomass estimates in Amazonia. As part of a CTI, all commercial trees ≥45 cm DBH were measured and georeferenced in 3500 ha of a logging concession in NW Mato Grosso, Brazil. A scientific inventory was conducted of all trees and palms ≥10 cm DBH in 11.1 ha of this area. A total of >20,000 trees were sampled for both inventories. To characterize vegetation radiance and topographic features, regional LANDSAT TM and ASTER images were obtained. Using a stream network derived from the ASTER-based 30 m digital elevation model (DEM), a procedure was developed to predict areas excluded from logging based on reduced impact logging (RIL) criteria. A topographic index (TI) computed from the DEM was used to identify areas with similar hydrologic regimes and to distinguish upland and lowland areas. Some timber species were associated with convergent landscape positions (i.e., higher TI values). There were significant differences in timber density and aboveground biomass (AGB) in upland (6.0 stems ha−1, 33 Mg ha−1) versus lowland (5.4 stems ha−1, 29 Mg ha−1) areas. Upland and lowland, and timber and non-timber areas could be distinguished through single and principal component analysis of LANDSAT bands. However, radiance differences between areas with and without commercial timber on a sub-hectare scale were small, indicating LANDSAT images would have limited utility for assessing commercial timber distribution at this scale. Assuming a 50 m stream buffer, areas protected from logging ranged from 7% (third order streams and above) to 28% (first order and above) of the total area. There was a strong positive relationship between AGB based on the scientific inventory of all trees and from the commercial timber, indicating that the CTI could be used in conjunction with limited additional sampling to predict total AGB (276 Mg ha−1). The methods developed in this study could be useful for facilitating commercial inventory practices, understanding the relationship of tree species distribution to landscape features, and improving the novel use of CTIs to estimate AGB.  相似文献

This study examined the variation in the development of naturally regenerated and planted seedlings of Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carr.) within gaps cut in a 32-year-old stand of the same species. The circular gaps were 20 m in diameter and designed to allow sunlight into only half of the gap floor at midsummer given the latitude of 56°45′N. Eight plots (8 m × 3 m) were laid out along a north–south transect through each gap (four within the gap and two each under the closed canopy north and south of the gap). Each plot was sub-divided and seedlings were planted into one part and the other part was left to naturally regenerate. In subsequent seasons, plots were further subdivided into ‘weed free’ and ‘vegetation left untouched’. Results showed that while the two central plots within the gaps had the highest value of canopy openness, the highest accumulated temperature and lowest soil moisture were recorded in plots that received direct sunlight. However, level of germination was significantly higher in the shaded area of the gap than in the part that received direct sunshine suggesting that higher moisture levels in shaded areas are important to successful germination. Minimal germination was recorded in the plots beneath the canopy. Seedling survival was significantly influenced by the influx of competing vegetation, but only in the part of the gaps that received direct sunlight. The success of Sitka spruce regeneration within gaps appears to depend on sufficient moisture and light to support regeneration and early growth, but not too much light to encourage the development of competing vegetation. The permanently shaded areas of the gaps appeared to offer ground conditions with sufficient moisture and light to ensure successful germination and early growth of seedlings, but without excessive competition from other vegetation.  相似文献

Reduced emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD +) has been seen as an important element in future climate policies. This paper analyzes the establishment of a REDD + pilot project in Kilosa district, Tanzania. It documents changes in organizations and institutions for land management undertaken to enable villagers to produce and sell stored carbon. Moreover, it evaluates the legitimacy both of the process of introducing REDD + and the outcomes in the form of new governance structures. We find that establishing tradable carbon is demanding. In fact, no carbon has yet been sold. We observe that while the Kilosa REDD + pilot managed to engage local communities to a rather unusual extent, the case also showed that introducing REDD + ‘on the ground’ faces several challenges regarding legitimacy.  相似文献

We implemented a fire risk assessment framework that combines spatially-explicit burn probabilities, post-fire mortality models and public auction timber prices, to estimate expected economic losses from wildfires in 155 black pine stands covering about 450 ha in the Juslapeña Valley of central Navarra, northern Spain. A logit fire occurrence model was generated from observed historic fires to provide required fire ignition input data. Wildfire likelihood and intensity were estimated by modeling 50,000 fires with the minimum travel time algorithm (MTT) at 30 m resolution under 97th percentile fire weather conditions. Post-fire tree mortality due to burning fire intensity at different successional stages ranged from 0.67% in the latest stages to 9.22% in the earliest. Stands showed a wide range of potential economic losses, and intermediate successional stage stands presented the highest values, with about 124  ha 1 on average. A fire risk map of the target areas was provided for forest management and risk mitigation purposes at the individual stand level. The approach proposed in this work has a wide potential for decision support, policy making and risk mitigation in southern European commercial conifer forests where large wildfires are the main natural hazard.  相似文献

The establishment of woody fallow systems is an option for the improvement of degraded agricultural landscape within the ecologically deteriorated Aral Sea area in northwest Uzbekistan. Growth and development of ten tree species, differing in tolerance to drought and salinity, were studied over 24 months. To determine species suitability for afforestation, conventional diameter and height measurements were compared to Relative Growth Rate (RGR) and its underlying components, Net Assimilation Rate (NAR), Specific Leaf Area (SLA) and Leaf Weight Ratio (LWR), as well as the Crop Growth Rate (CGR) as a function of NAR and Leaf Area Index (LAI). RGRs varied between 0.46 and 2.16 mg g−1 day−1 and showed highly significant differences among species, but also between years, which reduces the parameter's suitability for species selection. The same is true for NAR and SLA. CGR values ranged from 0.01 to 0.71 g m−2 day−1, increased with age of the trees, and showed significant species differences. CGR correlated better with NAR (r = 0.89) and SLA (r = 0.86) than RGR. Overall CGR correlated highly with the RGRs in height and diameter (in 80% and 71% of all cases, respectively). Thus, CGR appears to be a suitable indicator complementing RGR, NAR and SLA estimates to decide on species suitability for afforestation. The intensive measurements for RGR should be done later, rather than earlier in the tree life cycle. At an early age, CGR and diameter measurements are more meaningful. A combination of estimates, not a single factor, best assesses the long-term sustainable growth under natural conditions and allows early selection of species suitable for afforestation of degraded patches in the agricultural landscape. Ranking of all parameters concurrently showed the high potential of Elaeagnus angustifolia and Populus euphratica, which matched previous rankings based on total biomass production and financial added value.  相似文献

Fires create and consume snags (standing dead trees), an important structural and ecological component of ponderosa pine forests. The effects of repeated fires on snag densities in ponderosa pine forests of the southwestern USA have not been studied. Line intercept sampling was used to estimate snag densities in areas of the Gila Wilderness that had burned one to three times under Wildland Fire Use for Resource Benefit (WFU), a fire management policy implemented since 1974 aimed at restoring natural fire regimes. Twenty randomly located transects were measured in areas burned since 1946; six in once-burned areas, six in twice-burned areas and eight in thrice-burned areas. The mean density ± standard errors of large (>47.5 cm dbh) snags for areas that burned once, twice and thrice was 7.0 ± 2.7, 4.4 ± 1.1 and 4.1 ± 1.3 snags/ha, respectively. Differences in snag densities between once- and multiple-burned areas were significant (F-test; p < 0.05). There was no significant difference in density of large snags between twice- and thrice-burned areas. Proportions of type 1 snags (recently created) were higher in once- and twice-burned areas than in areas that burned three times, likely reflecting high tree mortality and snag recruitment resulting from an initial entry fire. Type 3 snags (charred by previous fire) were more abundant in areas that burned multiple times. The lack of differences in snag densities between areas that burned two and three times suggests that repeated fires leave many snags standing. The increasing proportion of type 3 snags with repeated fires supports this conclusion.  相似文献

Knowledge of the spatial distribution of soil salinity in areas of jarrah and karri forest where groundwater levels may be close to the surface is important when planning land use activities that may reduce leaf area and thus increase the risk of a rise in stream salinity. Hence this study aimed, firstly, to test whether a Geonics EM31 induction meter could be used to accurately estimate soil salinity in jarrah and karri forest soils. Secondly, to determine an appropriate method of surveying the stream zone with an EM31 to adequately represent the spatial variation in soil salinity.A comparison of EM31 meter estimates of soil apparent electrical conductivity (ECa) with average soil salinity profiles (EC1:5) to 6 m depth across a broad range of sites resulted in good correlations in spring (R2 = 0.66, n = 164, p < 0.001) and autumn (R2 = 0.64, n = 156, p < 0.001). ECa measured in spring, when soil moisture was at its highest, was 25% higher than in autumn, when soil moisture was at its lowest.EM31 surveys along second-order stream zones showed that the highest ECa levels generally occurred within 10 m of the stream centre. However, ECa was highly variable along the length of the streams and the highest levels did not necessarily occur at the lowest part of the catchment. A suitable method for conducting surveys of stream zones is to carry an EM31, while walking along a traverse, taking a reading approximately every 2 m.  相似文献

This paper provides a brief background to Mongolia’s forest condition in 1994. Over recent years, since the introduction of a market economy and decentralization, there has been a rapid change in the forest sector. In 1994, the total designated forest area of Mongolia was 17.5 million ha, including 12.7 million ha of closed forest or 8.1% of the total land area. The forests are subdivided into (i) special forests; (ii) protection forests; (iii) industrial forests, based on their basic functions. The main causes of deforestation in Mongolia are (i) increasing livestock numbers; (ii) increasing demand for fuel and industrial wood; (iii) the impact of forest fires. Grazing and browsing in forest areas are most destructive to plantations and tree growth, causing deformities and stunting growth. Livestock breeding without adequate management system has major negative impacts on remnant forest growth. According to some statistics, the forest area has decreased by 1.2 million ha over the last 20 years. At present, production and supply of sawn timber boards for the domestic market is carried out without any regard to the actual quantity required. Major wood-based products in Mongolia are railway sleepers, windows and doors, wooden boxes for packing and school and office furniture. Products are also made for the frames of the traditional Mongolian “Ger” and specialized furniture for the interior. By 1996, Mongolia’s forest industry had total sales of US$ 2.1 million, which was 13% more than the previous year.Between 1992 and 1995, the incidence of fires in forest areas increased because a sharp rise in the number of people using the forest and steppe areas to cut trees, pick berries and nuts, collect firewood and deer horns, and to hunt. Mismanagement and negligence of the relevant authorities also contributed to this situation. It is necessary to take strong measures in order to identify the social and economic causes of fire outbreaks. Since 1970, forestry and timber harvesting companies have begun to harvest wild seeds, breed seedlings and conduct reforestation activities. Between 1980 and 1990, on nationwide level, over 20 million standard seedlings were planted in over 40 permanent nurseries to supply the reforestation work. At that time the scope of reforestation expanded. The total area planted over some 30 years has been very small compared to the deforestation. Even if just the area harvested during that period is considered, the reforestation rate is still lower than 15%.  相似文献

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is highly prevalent among global populations, with an estimated number of infected patients being 170 million. Approximately 70–80% of patients acutely infected with HCV will progress to chronic liver disease, such as liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma, which is a substantial cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. New therapies for HCV infection have been developed, however, the therapeutic efficacies still need to be improved. Medicinal plants are promising sources for antivirals against HCV. A variety of plants have been tested and proven to be beneficial as antiviral drug candidates against HCV. In this study, we examined extracts, their subfractions and isolated compounds of Ruta angustifolia leaves for antiviral activities against HCV in cell culture. We isolated six compounds, chalepin, scopoletin, γ-fagarine, arborinine, kokusaginine and pseudane IX. Among them, chalepin and pseudane IX showed strong anti-HCV activities with 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 1.7 ± 0.5 and 1.4 ± 0.2 μg/ml, respectively, without apparent cytotoxicity. Their anti-HCV activities were stronger than that of ribavirin (2.8 ± 0.4 μg/ml), which has been widely used for the treatment of HCV infection. Mode-of-action analyses revealed that chalepin and pseudane IX inhibited HCV at the post-entry step and decreased the levels of HCV RNA replication and viral protein synthesis. We also observed that arborinine, kokusaginine and γ-fagarine possessed moderate levels of anti-HCV activities with IC50 values being 6.4 ± 0.7, 6.4 ± 1.6 and 20.4 ± 0.4 μg/ml, respectively, whereas scopoletin did not exert significant anti-HCV activities at 30 μg/ml.  相似文献

We produced a map of the biomass density and pools, at the county scale of resolution, of all forests of the eastern US using new approaches for converting inventoried wood volume to estimates of above and belowground biomass. Maps provide a visual representation of the pattern of forest biomass densities and pools over space that are useful for forest managers and decision makers, and as databases for verification of vegetation models. We estimated biomass density and pools at the county level from the USDA Forest Service, Forest Inventory and Analysis database on growing stock volume by forest type and stand size-class, and mapped the results in a geographic information system. We converted stand volume to aboveground biomass with regression equations for biomass expansion factors (BEF; ratio of aboveground biomass density of all living trees to merchantable volume) versus stand volume. Belowground biomass was estimated as a function of aboveground biomass with regression equations. Total biomass density for hardwood forests ranged from 36 to 344 Mg ha−1, with an area-weighted mean of 159 Mg ha−1. About 50% of all counties had hardwood forests with biomass densities between 125 and 175 Mg ha−1. For softwood forests, biomass density ranged from 2 to 346 Mg ha−1, with an area-weighted mean of 110 Mg ha−1. Biomass densities were generally lower for softwoods than for hardwoods; ca. 40% of all counties had softwood forests with biomass densities between 75 and 125 Mg ha−1. Highest amounts of forest biomass were located in the Northern Lake states, mountain areas of the Mid-Atlantic states, and parts of New England, and lowest amounts in the Midwest states. The total biomass for all eastern forests for the late 1980s was estimated at 20.5 Pg, 80% of which was in hardwood forests.  相似文献

The use of renewable resources is important to the developing bioenergy economy and short rotation woody crops (SRWC) are key renewable feedstocks. A necessary step in advancing SRWC is defining regions suitable for SRWC commercial activities and assessing the relative economic viability among suitable regions. The goal of this study was to assess the potential profitability, based on obtainable yield and economic feasibility; of Pinus taeda L. (loblolly pine) across 13 states of the southern USA. A process-based growth model, 3PG, produced estimated yields of P. taeda in terms of mean annual increment (MAI) that were evaluated as internal rate of return on investment (IRR) and land expectation value (LEV). Coastal areas (southeast Texas, southwest Louisiana, and northern Florida) have the highest potential MAI production ranging from 13.7 to 18.9 Mg ha 1 yr 1. LEVs ranged from − 1126 to 3111 $ ha 1 on upland sites and − 2261 to 2341 $ ha 1 on lowland sites. IRR ranged from − 0.3% to 14.2% on uplands and − 2.9% to 10.4% on lowlands. On soils of the same textural class, LEV and IRR were higher on uplands relative to lowlands given lower site preparation costs, although the projected yield from upland soils are generally lower than those from lowland soils. The highest LEV and IRR were in northern Florida, southern Alabama, southern Georgia, and southern South Carolina. The lowest LEV and IRR were in Virginia and northern North Carolina. Spatially categorizing suitable lands in biological and economic terms can use geographic information system technology to advantage in combination with societal considerations to begin to answer sustainability questions as well as identify suitable sites for bioenergy plantations.  相似文献

A mannogalactoglucan, named LE-MGG, was isolated from the basidiocarps of Lentinus edodes by hot water-extraction, ethanol precipitation anion exchange chromatography, and further purified by gel-permeation chromatography (GPC). Its structural features were investigated by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), high performance gel-permeation chromatography (HPGPC), methylation analysis, periodate oxidation-Smith degradation, and by IR and NMR spectroscopy, including two-dimensional (2D) NMR. HPLC analysis revealed that LE-MGG contained mannose–galactose–glucose in the molar ratio of 10:18:72. GPC and HPGPC showed that LE-MGG was a homogeneous fraction (d = 1.34) and its molecular weight was estimated to be 18 kDa. Chemical and spectroscopic studies indicated that LE-MGG consists of (1  6)-, (1  4)- and (1  3)-linked β-d-glucopyranosyl residues, (1  6)-linked α-d-galactopyranosyl residues, (1  3,6)- and (1  2,4)-linked α-d-mannopyranosyl residues and terminal residues of β-d-glucopyranosyl. Cytotoxicity assay showed that LE-MGG presented higher antitumor activities against S-180 cell with a dose-dependent manner, and exhibited lower cytotoxicity to carcinoma HCT-116 and HT-29 cells. Our studies showed also that LE-MGG presented antitumor bioactivities on Sarcoma 180 solid tumor cell implanted in Kunming mice. This finding suggests that mannogalactoglucan should be explored as potential antitumor agents and could be potentially applied as a natural antitumor drug.  相似文献

Wood ash is recommended as a compensatory fertiliser to counteract the effects of acidic deposition on forest ecosystems. Spatial distribution of biomass, necromass and morphology parameters of the fine roots (diameter classes <1, 1–2, <2 mm) of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) were analysed in response to fertilisation with granulated wood ash (GWA) in a long-term field experiment in SW Sweden. GWA was applied as a single dose of 3200 kg ha−1 and the fine roots were sampled 9 years later by soil coring. Soil cores were divided into 1-cm strata within the top 0–2.5 cm humus limits, the lower humus below 2.5 cm (with varying thickness) and the mineral soil to 50 cm depth (from ground surface). Total fine-root biomass in the control (C) and GWA treatment, 256 ± 20 and 258 ± 25 g m−2, respectively, and length 2072 ± 182 and 1800 ± 198 m m−2, respectively, did not differ statistically from each other. Total fine-root necromass in the 1–2 mm fraction was significantly higher in C than in the GWA treatment, 130 ± 12 and 80 ± 10 g m−2, respectively. Fine-root biomass in the <1 mm fraction was significantly greater in the lower humus in the GWA treatment, but this did not affect the total biomass in the <1 mm fraction in the whole soil profile. The biomass-to-necromass ratio (1–2 mm) was significantly higher in the GWA treatment in the 0–30 cm soil layer than in the corresponding layer of the control. Specific root length (SRL) was lower in the GWA treatment than in the control in the 0–5 cm soil layer. The lower necromass and SRL were more clearly related to the GWA treatment, whereas the difference in the vertical distribution of biomass may have been related to the thicker humus layer in the GWA plots.  相似文献

Our limited understanding of the processes that control the allocation of biomass in trees is one of the factors that hinders our ability to develop mechanistic models of tree growth. Furthermore, accurate assessment of carbon sequestration by forests is hampered by lack of information regarding below-ground biomass. Below-ground to above-ground biomass ratios (BGB:AGB) are known to vary with a number of environmental factors, tending to increase in drier, harsher conditions. However, there are few, good datasets of BGB:AGB ratios of large trees, especially native Australian species. We aimed to investigate the response of BGB:AGB to water availability and tree spacing in 10-year-old Eucalyptus camaldulensis growing in a plantation in a low rainfall area.We carefully harvested 16 trees, ranging in diameter at breast height (DBH) from 7.6 to 25 cm, from a research trial near Deniliquin, NSW. Four replicates of each treatment from a factorial design with wide (3 m × 6 m) and narrow (3 m × 1.5 m) spaced trees and with natural rainfall (408 mm/year) (control) or irrigated plots (flooded six times per year) were selected. Above-ground tree parts were harvested separating stem, branch and foliage. Soil cores to 1 m depth were taken to sample small roots (<15 mm diameter) within each plot, then all roots >15 mm belonging to each tree were excavated using compressed air and an excavator. Roots were separated into six size classes within the range from <2 to >50 mm.Both water and spacing treatments influenced tree growth with trees being larger in irrigated, wide spaced plots. The BGB:AGB ratio was strongly influenced by irrigation (0.68 control, 0.34 irrigated) but not spacing. Allometric analysis of above- and below-ground biomass as a function of DBH showed that the relationship between DBH and above-ground biomass was conserved across treatments.By contrast, the relationship between DBH and below-ground biomass was influenced by water availability, commensurate with the large differences in BGB:AGB ratio. The BGB:AGB ratio increased with tree size largely due to an increase in small roots. The proportion of total root mass in the small roots (<15 mm) obtained through coring was 25–48% with 18–30% of total root biomass in the <5 mm diameter class.  相似文献

The present study aimed at investigating the structural features and antioxidant activities of a polysaccharide fraction (DHP1A) obtained from Dendrobium huoshanense, a precious herb medicine in China. DHP1A mainly consisted of mannose (Man), glucose (Glc) and a trace of galactose (Gal), with a molecular weight of 6700 Da. Its backbone contained (1  4)-linked α-D-Glcp, (1  6)-linked α-D-Glcp and (1  4)-linked β-D-Manp, with a branch of terminal β-D-Galp. The in vitro antioxidant evaluation revealed that DHP1A had a remarkable inhibition effect on the FeCl2-induced lipid peroxidation. Furthermore, DHP1A pretreatment decreased the production of malondialdehyde (MDA), and restored the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx), as well as the level of glutathione (GSH) in the livers of CCl4-treated mice. These results suggested that DHP1A was a potential antioxidant component in D. huoshanense.  相似文献

Pre-marked skid trails, directional felling and climber cutting when logging in tropical rainforests may be important ways of reducing damage to the forest, thus creating a healthier stand and improving future yields. This study, carried out in a virgin dipterocarp rainforest in the south of Sabah, Malaysia, compared two types of logging (both with and without pre-cutting climbers): conventional selective logging (CL) and supervised logging (SL). The latter is a selective logging system in which both pre-marked skid trails and directional felling were implemented. The pre-marked skid trails were aligned parallel to each other, spaced 62 m apart. A randomised complete block 2 × 2 factorial design was used in the experiment, consisting of 16 gross treatment plots, each of 5.76 ha with a 1 ha net plot in the centre.Fewer trees tended (0.050 < P  0.100) to be logged in SL plots than in CL plots (on average 9.4 and 13.0 trees ≥60 cm diameter breast height ha−1). Pre-felling of climbers resulted in four more dipterocarp trees being logged ha−1, compared with no climber cutting: a statistically significant difference (P  0.050). The basal areas lost of both large trees (≥ 60 cm dbh) and small dipterocarp trees (10–29 cm dbh) tended to differ between the logging systems, with CL leading to greater losses. There were significant differences in the residual stands left by the logging systems, with respect to the number of dipterocarps and their basal area in the diameter class 10–29 cm; ca 30% more stems being found after SL. No significant differences (or tendencies) in these variables were found in the residual stands in other diameter classes, or when trees of all species were considered.  相似文献

Influenza poses a particular risk of severe outcomes in the elderly, the very young and those with underlying diseases. Tea polyphenols are the natural phenolic compounds in teas, and principally consist of catechins, proanthocyanidins, flavonols, and theaflavins, which antiviral activities have been reported recently. This study is to gain a further insight into potential of various tea polyphenols for inhibiting influenza virus infection. Five tea polyphenols exhibited inhibitory activity against influenza A virus in the trend of theaflavin > procyanidin B-2 > procyanidin B-2 digallate > (−)-epigallocatechin(EGC) > (−)-epigallocatechingallate(EGCG) with IC50 values in the range of 16.2–56.5 μg/ml. Six of the tested compounds showed anti-influenza B virus activity in the order of kaempferol > EGCG > procyanidin B-2 > (−)-EGC ~ methylated EGC > theaflavin with IC50 values in the range of 9.0–49.7 μg/ml. Based on these results, the structure–activity relationship (SAR) was explained as follows. First, the dimeric molecules, such as theaflavin and procyanidin B-2, generally displayed more potent antiviral activity against both influenza A and B viruses than the catechin monomers. Second, the kaempferol for inhibition of influenza B virus indicated that the more planar flavonol structure with only one C-4′ phenolic hydroxyl group in the B ring is necessary for the anti-influenza B virus activity. A similar SAR can be drawn from the assays of another enveloped RNA virus, such as respiratory syncytial virus. These results are expected to provide guides for rational design of antiviral drugs based on polyphenols.  相似文献

This study evaluates the effect of two different thinning treatments (2 and 3), and a control without thinning (1), on stand stability of secondary even-aged Norway spruce stands, in relation to the main risk factors of snow and wind, which should be considered in the period of stand conversion. Treatment 2 is a heavy thinning at top heights of 10, 12.5 and 15 m; treatment 3 starts with the first heavy thinning at the top height of 10 m, but the second and third treatments are delayed till a top height of 20 and 22.5 m are reached. The experimental stands are in secondary Norway spruce forest growing on a site considered unsuitable for that species and especially at risk from snow and storm damage. The investigated thinning variants significantly influenced the stability of the experimental stands. Both thinning treatments encouraged diameter increment and therefore their h/d ratio reached lower levels than the control. In treatment 2, the h/d ratio stabilized in the period of intensive treatment at around 80; i.e., it is the most suitable treatment from the viewpoint of stem-break resistance. Treatment 3 did not stop h/d ratio increase, but slowed it compared to the control variant without thinning. Subsequently the later interventions at the top heights of 20 m and, especially, 22.5 m stopped the increase of the h/d ratio and kept it under the critical value of 90.  相似文献
