Microvascular circulation of the small intestine in horses.   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The microvascular anatomic features of the small intestine was described by correlating results of microangiography, light microscopy, gross studies, and scanning electron microscopy of vascular replicas in 14 horses. After heparinization, the horses were euthanatized, a length of jejunum was transected, and blood was flushed free of the circulation, using isotonic NaCl solution. In six horses, the circulatory system was perfused with a modified radiopaque medium and evaluated radiographically. These sections were then evaluated by standard histologic methods. Sections from 8 horses were perfused with 1 of 2 types of plastics and studied grossly or by scanning electron microscopy. The marginal arterial arcade gives rise to vessels that enter the jejunum at the mesenteric angle. These vessels penetrated either directly, by branching and entering on both sides of the mesenteric angle, or supplying only 1 side of the mesenteric angle. All these vessels continued in the submucosa branching extensively, forming a submucosal plexus. This submucosal plexus supplied the tunica muscularis, tunica serosa, and the mucosa. Vessels within the 2 muscle layers ran parallel to the muscle fibers and, consequently, perpendicular to each other. The arterial supply to the mucosa penetrated the muscularis mucosae and branched to supply 2 mucosal capillary networks. An eccentrically placed arteriole penetrated the base of the villus and spiralled to the tip where it "fountained" into a mesh-like capillary network, which descended peripherally in the villus to drain via 1 to 3, but most commonly 2 venules. 1. To obtain intestinal morphological data demonstrating the faster growth rate in broiler (BR) than in White Leghorn (WL) chickens, villi of the duodenum, jejunum and ileum were examined from 1 to 30 d of age by scanning electron microscopy. 2. At the first day after hatching, villi of each intestinal segment showed a finger-like shape in both breeds. Villi developed to a plate-like shape in the duodenum, a wave-like shape in the jejunum and a tongue-like shape in the ileum at 30 d of age via the common plate-like villi at 10 d of age. The fundamental villous shape and arrangement seem to be accomplished by 10 d of age; two types of obliquely elongated plate-like villi showed a zigzag arrangement, adjoining at an angle of 40 degrees to 60 degrees like an oblique T-shape. It is suggested that such a villous arrangement would be more effective for nutrient absorption by inducing a long zigzag flow of ingesta. 3. Compared with WL, even at the first day after hatching BR had many more developed epithelial cell protrusions over the whole apical surface of the duodenal villi. In WL the protrusions were not so apparent and located only in the central area of the villous tip. Furthermore, at 10 d of age BR showed more developed and larger villi, many wider microvilli at the apical portion of villi and more active extrusions of epithelial cells from the tip of the duodenal and jejunal villi. 4. These morphological characteristics of villi in early life in BR suggest a greater absorptive surface area and a more active intestinal function, permitting the faster growth rate of BR immediately after hatching.  相似文献

Small and large intestines of seven specific pathogen-free lambs infected with cryptosporidia from calves with diarrhea were examined by scanning and transmission electron microscopy and by light microscopy. The small intestine was infected in all the lambs, and the cecum and colon in three. Small intestinal alterations were severe villous atrophy and dilatation of the crypts of Lieberkühn. Epithelial cross-bridging between contiguous villi caused much villous fusion. Epithelial cells constituting the bridges were connected by desmosomal junctions, and were continuous with the epithelial coverings of the associated villi. The lamina propria was heavily infiltrated with neutrophil leukocytes. Infected crypts in cecum and colon were dilated and devoid of mucus-secreting cells, while the ridges between crypts were hypertrophied, and the lamina propria was infiltrated by neutrophils. Cell vegetations with adherent bacteria were present in the surface intestinal epithelium of two lambs infected for 11 and 14 days, respectively. No adherent bacteria were seen in any site in lambs killed up to six days post-inoculation.  相似文献

In the present study, we analysed the effect of fixative, breed, luteal stage and location on the nuclear density, volume density of connective tissue and vascular tissue/lumina within a bovine luteal gland in view of the development of an in vivo sampling technique to longitudinally monitor luteal histophysiology. The inner zone defined as the zone geometrically closest to the centre of the gland shows a significantly lower nuclear density (for all cell types) and a higher volume density of collagen fibres and vessels when compared with the outer zone (p < 0.001). The nuclear density in luteal glands from Holstein‐Friesian cows is not significantly different from that in Belgian Blue cows, nor is it in stage II vs stage III glands. The collagen fibre content was significantly lower in glands of Belgian Blue cows (p = 0.01) and in younger glands (p = 0.003). Hence, it seems that the lower nuclear density in the inner zone was compensated by a higher amount of collagen fibres. As the type of fixative applied has a significant effect on the nuclear density of the different cell types, the present study warrants future research to further optimize the fixation protocol. As a conclusion, we can state that the topographic difference in nuclear distribution for the different cell types in a bovine luteal gland is only significant when comparing the inner vs the outer zone. This implies that if a sample representative for the whole gland has to be taken, for example, when taking an in vivo sample, it is necessary that the biopsy goes through the inner zone and contains the total diameter of the gland.  相似文献

Examination of the small intestine of pigs with proliferative haemorrhagic enteropathy showed changes consistent with defects in vascular permeability. Early in the disease there were many eosinophils and distension of lacteals and intercellular spaces with proteinaceous material. Later the predominant features were red blood cells and exudate in tissue spaces. This was most severe and extensive at the tips of villi which were covered by a cast of cells and fibrinous exudate. Adenomatous intestinal mucosal cells contained organisms that were free within the apical cytoplasm and were morphologically identical with those seen in the related disease, porcine intestinal adenomatosis. Also these bacteria were seen free in the subepithelial mucosal area, in blood vessels and within membrane-bound vesicles in phagocytic cells in the mucosa and its blood vessels. The distribution and diameter of the pores of epithelial basement membrane in the intestinal villi and the lymph nodules of ileal Peyer's patches were investigated in the rat small intestine by scanning electron microscopy after the removal of the overlying epithelial cells with OsO(4) maceration. In the duodenum, jejunum and ileum, the pores were mainly distributed at the upper three fourths of the villi, but were scarce around the top of the villi. The diameter of some of the pores in the upper three fourths of the villi was larger than that of those in the lower portion. The protrusion of lymphocytes and the cytoplasmic processes of macrophages were also seen at the orifices of the pores. In ileal Peyer's patches, in contrast, pores were densely distributed in the lower one third of the follicle-associated epithelium (FAE) where M cells were mainly seen. Furthermore, these pores were larger than those found in the upper two thirds. Lymphocytes or cytoplasmic processes of macrophages were frequently seen in the lower one third of FAE. These results suggest that the pores at the basement membrane correspond to the passage of the immunocompetent cells which are in contact with M cells or villous columnar epithelial cells and that the abundance of pores is a sign of aggressive interaction between the particular epithelial cells and the immunocompetent cells at the upper three fourths of intestinal villi and the lower one third of FAE in the rat small intestine.  相似文献

The high incidence of partial rupture of the superficial digital flexor tendor in the equine athlete represents a major cause for concern in the racing industry. Frequently, the lesion is localised to the central core of the tendon. This study tested the hypothesis that the site specific structural failure results from differences in the collagen fibre morphology and associated micromechanics between central and peripheral regions of the tendon. Bundles of collagen fibres were dissected from central and peripheral sites in the mid-metacarpal region of the tendon. Crimp morphology was quantified by polarised light microscopy and mechanical characteristics determined using a fibre tensometer. In older horses, centrally located fibres showed significantly lower values for crimp angle, crimp length and toe limit strain than seen peripherally. There were no significant differences in these features between corresponding sites in the younger horses. No significant difference between sites was found in elastic modulus in either group. These data indicate a non-uniform functional stress distribution which may result from ageing or be related to the exercise history as a feature of accumulated damage. These observations may explain the location of central core lesions seen on clinical examination.  相似文献

The distribution and arrangement of oxytalan fibres were examined in periodontal specimens of cheek teeth from seven horses. Oxidation prior to aldehyde fuchsin exposition permitted a selective staining of the oxytalan fibres, which are a distinct component of the elastic fibre system. On three horizontal levels of the periodontium--(a) subgingival, (b) middle third and (c) apical--two oxytalan fibre groups were shown histologically: 'blood vessel-related' and 'independent' oxytalan fibres. In levels a and b, both groups were arranged in a typical occluso-apical alignment along the reserve crown. Single oxytalan fibres deviated from their general course in order to attach to the cementum. In these cemental entheses the oxytalan fibres ran parallel to collagen fibre bundles. The interpretation of such morphological features emphasized the oxytalan fibres' capacity to improve the stability of periodontal blood vessel walls during masticatory movements. Level c, especially in regions next to the persisting epithelial root sheath, is the site of oxytalan fibre generation. This is a prerequisite for the facilitation of periodontal regeneration and reorganization during dental growth and eruption.  相似文献

Methylmethacrylate castings of the eye microvasculature were prepared from 10 Spargue-Dawley rats and studied by electron microscopy. The choroidal arterioles are larger in diameter than retinal arterioles, and have a shorter course to choroidal capillaries than retinal arterioles to retinal capillaries. Retinal capillaries are extremely thin in diameter and form a sparse retinal capillary network. The choriocapillaris is large and sinusoid-like, forming a compactly arranged network in the choroid. These differences in the microvasculature between the choroid and retina help explain the differences in ocular hemodynamics; that is, the blood flow in the choroid is faster than that in the retina. Capillaries of the iris show a zigzag configuration, which may be an accommodation for dilation and constriction of the pupil. Capillaries of the ciliary body are of large diameter forming leaf-like configurations, presumably to contribute to the secretion of the aqueous humor. Capillaries of the conjunctiva exhibit a somewhat coiled configuration, the arrangement of which reduce tension of the conjunctiva vessels caused by eyeball movement. Intra-arterial cushions, which control blood flow at the branching sites, are found in both choroidal or retinal arterioles.  相似文献

Lungs were obtained from five adult Baird's beaked whales (Berardius bairdii) and examined by means of light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy of corrosion casts. The alveolar septa of these whales are thick with a connective tissue core and a bi-layer capillary bed. A double capillary network is regularly found in the alveolar duct and alveolar septa. Occasionally, septa adjacent to alveoli and alveoli themselves show only a single capillary layer. The distance between the two capillary layers has a tendency to decrease toward the end of airspaces, suggesting an end result of capillary fusion. Vascular replicas of venous vessels have annular furrows at regular intervals of 50 to 100 microm, which are caused by focal aggregations of collagen fibers circularly oriented and located immediately underneath the endothelium. The first valves appear in the collecting venules gathering alveolar capillaries. These valves are quite characteristic of flap-, funnel-and/or chimney like structures.  相似文献

Histological examination of the peripheral circulation of the ovary of 18 females of the one‐humped camel revealed a series of blood vessels with special structures. Throttle or occlusive artery was recorded in the ovarian zona vasculosa and in the cortex, and it showed an intimal cushion‐like thickening made up of intimal bolsters that formed of smooth muscle fibres and glomus cells. The smooth muscle cells of the tunica media and the tunica adventitia of throttle artery pursued a circumferential pattern. Anastomosis arteriovenosa included simple bridge‐like anastomotic vessels between arteria and venae, and glomus vessels of typical structure were demonstrated. Glomus organs were recorded in the ovary and were comprised of the tortuous glomus vessels and the related afferent and efferent vessels. Glomus cell complexes also were commonly occur at the cortex ovarii that possessed an extremely convoluted course with a hyperplastic wall and a narrow lumen. Atypical glomus vessels were demonstrated within the ovarian zona vasculosa, and the wall of these vessels was relatively thick and consisted of double tunica media with an intimal bolster. Some vessels contained an intimal bolster device of exclusively glomus cell structure (glomus bolster) with a tunica elastic interna demarcated it from the glomus cell media. Some venae represented several layers of longitudinally arranged smooth muscle fibres in the tunica media. Other venae showed wall with variable thickness. Venae with double muscular tunica media were recorded in the medulla. Some venae showed double internal elastic lamina. Also, venae with thick adventitia contained dispersed smooth muscle fibres were determined. Spirally oriented arteriole and venule were demonstrated within the cortex and medulla ovarii. Gestation sclerosis was demonstrated in ovarian zona vasculosa of pregnant females.  相似文献

The ileocaecal junction mucosal surface morphology of 5 horses and 1 donkey was examined using scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy. Based on differences in surface morphology, the junction could be divided into 4 distinct regions. The distal extremity of the ileum was characterized by the presence of typical finger-like villi followed by a narrow zone displaying short, stubby villi which gradually merged into a 3rd region representing the true transitional zone between the small and large intestine. In this region the villi fused, forming low ridges arranged in circular, semi-circular or S-shaped patterns. Many of the fused villi were indented at the tips giving these structures a doughnut-like appearance. The caecal portion of the ileocaecal junction formed the 4th region and was characterized by the absence of villi and the occurrence of regularly spaced crypt openings each surrounded by a slightly raised circular mound.  相似文献

Data on fifty horses with hereditary equine regional dermal asthenia (HERDA; "hyperelastosis cutis") were collected on clinical, histopathological, ultrastructural and immunohistological findings. All horses were Quarter horses or of Quarter horse ancestry. Pedigree evaluation strongly supported an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance. The most common lesions were seromas/haematomas, open wounds, sloughing skin, and loose, easily tented skin that did not return to its initial position. Definitive diagnosis could not be made via histopathology, although the presence of tightly grouped thin and shortened collagen fibres arranged in clusters in the deep dermis was suggestive of the disease. Trichrome, acid orcein-Giemsa and immunohistochemical stains for collagens I and III showed no consistent abnormalities compared to control horses; an increase in elastic fibres was not a consistent finding. Electron microscopy showed no abnormalities in the periodicity of the collagen bundles; neither orientation nor variation of cross-section diameter of the collagen fibrils differentiated control from affected horses. The diagnosis of HERDA relies on clinical presentation, but may be supported by suggestive (although not pathognomonic) histopathological lesions.  相似文献

为了探讨葎草醇提物对小鼠分泌性腹泻的治疗作用,本试验采用番泻叶灌胃法制作小鼠腹泻模型,通过观察小鼠精神变化、体重变化、DAI评分、结肠肠壁厚度及小肠病理切片变化的情况,评价葎草醇提物对小鼠的抗腹泻作用。结果显示,与模型组相比,葎草醇提物对治疗组小鼠精神恢复、体重及小肠绒毛恢复等均有明显的作用;治疗组相对模型组体重有上升趋势,但仍不能完全恢复至正常水平;治疗组与模型组相比DAI评分明显降低,且与空白组相比DAI评分差异不显著(P>0.05);治疗组肠壁厚度较模型组差异显著(P<0.05),治疗效果显著。病理组织学观察,空白组小鼠小肠绒毛排列整齐,各层次结构清晰,绒毛间质无水肿、无小血管扩张充血,而模型组小鼠小肠绒毛排列紊乱,大部分绒毛脱落,绒毛表面有炎性渗出,绒毛间质水肿,小血管扩张、充盈。治疗组与模型组相比症状明显改变,小肠绒毛排列整齐,绒毛表面炎性渗出大部分消失,绒毛间质无明显水肿、无小血管扩张、充血,小肠结构与正常组织大致相同,治疗效果明显。研究结果表明葎草醇提物对小鼠腹泻有明显的治疗效果,可为分泌性腹泻的治疗提供理论依据。  相似文献

To explore the therapeutic effect of Humulus scandens alcohol extract on secretory diarrhea in mice,we used lavage of senna to produce diarrhea mice mode.The mental state,body weight,colon intestinal wall thickness and histopathological changes were observed daily during the experiment period and the disease activity index was detected to evaluated therapeutic action of Humulus scandens alcohol extract on diarrhea.The results showed that compared with model group,the treatment group had significant effects on metal state,body weight and small intestinal villus recoveries;Compared with model group,body weight of treatment group had a rising trend but still couldn't reach the normal level.The DAI of treatment group decreased compared with model grope,there was no significant difference between blank group and treatment group (P>0.05).Compared with model group,intestinal wall thickness of treatment group were significant differences (P<0.05),the treatment effect was remarkable.Histological examination showed that in blank group,small intestinal villus was neatly,the hierarchical structure was clear,and there was no small vessel hyperemia and no villous intestinal edema.While small intestinal villus of model group disordered,most of the villus fell off,there was inflammation exudation on the surface of villi,villous edema and congestion of small blood vessels.Compared with model group,symptoms of treatment group significantly changed,which showed greatly reduced cell inflammatory exudation,there was no obvious edema and congestion in villi interstitial,small intestinal structure was roughly the same as normal tissue,the treatment effect was obvious.Humulus scandens alcohol extract had significant therapeutic effect on diarrhea in mice,and could provide a theoretical basis for the treatment of secretory diarrhea.  相似文献

Microvascular anatomy of the third compartment of the stomach of llamas   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
OBJECTIVE: To characterize the vascular anatomy of the third compartment of the stomach of llamas. ANIMALS: 7 adult llamas. PROCEDURE: Immediately after each llama was euthanatized, vascular replicas of tissue from the third compartment were prepared by use of methylmethacrylate monomer and catalyst. Following chemical removal of tissue, the casts were further prepared for examination via scanning electron microscopy. By use of barium solution, microangiography was also performed on fixed tissue samples; the infused tissue was sectioned and imaged radiographically. Tissue samples were also collected for histologic evaluation after fixation and H&E staining. RESULTS: The third compartment was supplied by 4 pairs of primary arteries and veins located around the circumference of the structure. From these vessels, smaller arteries and veins branched to supply the serosal surface and penetrated deeper through the tunica muscularis to supply the submucosal and mucosal layers. An extensive capillary network was arranged in a hexagonal array surrounding the gastric glands, such that the mucosal aspect of the replicas had a honeycomb-like appearance. Histologically, variably sized villous projections lined by a single layer of epithelial cells with an extensive glandular network were observed. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The third compartment of the stomach of llamas is a highly vascular structure with an extensive anastomotic capillary network at the luminal surface. Branching vessels provide extensive collateral circulation, and it appears that surgical incisions should heal well. Incisions in the third compartment should be oriented parallel to the longitudinal plane.  相似文献

This study aimed at examining the histological structure of the pecten oculi in the adult yellow‐legged gull, Larus michahellis, and at two moments of postnatal development: during the posthatch (nestling) and juvenile periods. Particular attention was paid to differences in the diameter of vessels, the thickness of the basement membrane, and ultrastructural features of endothelial and pigmented stromal cells. Capillary endothelial cells displayed numerous microvillous‐like folds projecting from their internal and external surfaces. Intercellular spaces between capillaries were occupied by pigmented stromal cells. The ultrastructure of pecten oculi underwent noticeable changes during postnatal development. The examination of the capillaries in nestlings, juveniles, and adults revealed that the formation process of vessels and pigmented stromal cells did not complete itself in the posthaching phase. The prominent feature of endothelial cells of capillaries in nestlings was that the microvilli were longer than in juvenile and adult cells, and the capillary lumen was therefore reduced. In this sense, their pigmented stromal cells showed fewer melanosomes, lacked intercellular spaces, and cellular junctions could still be observed. These results provide evidence that the pecten oculi during the posthatching phase maintains immature morphological features consistent with a role of pigmented stromal cells in the blood‐retina barrier.  相似文献

Coronavirus titers in small intestine, degree of villous atrophy and apparent rates of regeneration of intestinal villi were compared in newborn, 3-week-old and adult pigs for 1 week after they were exposed to the transmissible gastroenteritis virus of swine. The response within the newborn group was homogeneous, resulting in high virus titers, maximal villous atrophy and comparatively slow regeneration. In general, virus titers were lower, villous atrophy was less severe and regeneration more rapid in both older groups than in the newborn pigs. However, the response varied greatly in the older groups. The 3-week-old group was divided into two populations. The major population had low virus titers and developed partial villous atrophy, whereas the minor population had marked villous atrophy and virus titers comparable to those of the newborn pigs. These observations support the hyposthesis that the accelerated replacement of villous epithelium in the small intestine of pigs during the first 3 weeks contributes to the innate age-dependent resistance to transmissible gastroenteritis. The accelerated replacement of villous epithelial cells in older pigs contributes to resistance in two ways. The increased proliferative capacity of crypt epithelium results in a more rapid regeneration of atrophic villi; and the comparatively young villous absorptive cells resulting from accelerated replacement produce less virus per cell than the older ones of the newborn pig.  相似文献

The structural characteristics of the ventricular myocardium and the arterial distribution of the ventricular wall were studied in two freshwater teleost fish species (Piaractus mesopotamicus and Clarias gariepinus). The ventricular myocardium consists of two distinct layers, an external compact layer and an internal spongy layer. In Piaractus mesopotamicus the compact layer contains fibres with an external longitudinal arrangement and an internal circular arrangement. The arterial vascularization of the compact layer is provided by subepicardial vessels and their ramifications in both species.  相似文献
