Studies on reproduction in the goat. VII. Pregnancy and the development of the foetus and the foetal accessories of the goat

1. A total of 18 goats were ovariohysterectomized at different stages — 26 days to 145 days — of pregnancy.
2. The amniotic fluid increases from about 3.5 ml at 30 days to 600–1,000 ml per foetus at birth.
3. At birth the amount of allantoic fluid is approximately 600–1,100 ml and is to a small extent dependent on the number of foetuses.
4. The length of the foetus is about 1.4 cm at 30 days and 43 cm at 145 days, the lengthwise growth curve from the 30th day and onward being almost linear.
5. Hair follicles are visible around the 60th day and the eyes open between the 130th and 140th day.
6. The average length and weight of the goat kids at birth are 42.06 cm and 2.81 kg respectively.
7. The birth weight and length tend to increase with the increasing age of the dam.
8. The male does not appear to have any influence on the birth weight and length of the offspring.

     

Suppression of sheep and goat lymphocyte proliferation by sheep, goat, and sheep x goat hybrid trophoblast tissue cultures.

Immunosuppressive activity of conditioned medium from cultured ovine, caprine, and hybrid trophoblast tissue was examined. Conceptuses were obtained from naturally mated donor ewes and does at d 20 of gestation and trophoblast tissue was cultured for 24 h in medium supplemented with 15% calf serum and 1% antibiotic/antimycotic. Conditioned medium was added to pokeweed mitogen-stimulated sheep and goat lymphocyte cultures. Quantification of [3H]thymidine uptake by cells was used to measure lymphocyte proliferation. Ovine, caprine, and hybrid conditioned medium effectively suppressed sheep and goat lymphocyte proliferation (P less than .01). There were no differences (P greater than .05) between the immunosuppressive activity of the three tissue types on either sheep or goat lymphocytes. For all treatment groups, sheep lymphocytes were suppressed more than goat lymphocytes (P less than .05). These results indicate that, at d 20 of gestation, sheep x goat hybrid trophoblast tissue is capable of suppressing pokeweed mitogen-stimulated lymphocyte proliferation.     

波尔山羊杂交改良萨能山羊和本地山羊试验报告

用波尔山羊冷冻精液与萨能山羊、浦江本地山羊杂交，杂一代羊体尺、体重有较大幅度提高。波萨山羊比萨能山羊6月龄体高、体长、胸围分别提高8．05％、7．95％、8．24％，初生重、6月龄重分别提高12．08％、20．53％，差异显著。波本山羊比本地山羊6月龄体高、体长、胸围分别提高22．85％、22、75％、18．42％，初生重、6月龄重分别提高41．53％、79．43％．差异极显著。每只波萨山羊比萨能山羊增加收入41．30元。每只波本山羊比本地山羊增加收入95．40元。     

布奶杂交一代山羊生长发育及产肉性能试验研究

选择同期出生的布奶一代和当地奶山羊公羔各３０只，分两组观测生长发育情况；周岁时每组随机选取６只进行屠宰，测定产肉性能。结果表明：布奶一代具有极显著的杂种优势，周岁时体重达到４６．５ｋｇ，比奶山羊高１１．２５ｋｇ，平均产净肉１８．４３ｋｇ，比奶山羊多５．９１ｋｇ。     

Dehorning the mature goat

Surgical techniques for dehorning the mature goat utilized combinations of sedation and local anesthesia. Numerous factors were considered before surgery was performed. Use of Barne's calf dehorners, tube-type calf dehorners, and elastrator bands are contraindicated in the goat due to the anatomic structure of the frontal sinus. Dehorning female goats late in gestation can induce aboriton; male goats used for breeding should be dehorned well in advance of the breeding season. Owners should be advised that dehorning can be temporatily debilitating to the goat and can alter a goat's social status within a herd.     

Lectin-binding patterns in the spermatogenic cells of the shiba goat testis.

Lectin-binding patterns in the testis of the sexually mature goat were investigated by light and transmission electron microscopy. Dolichos biflorus agglutinin (DBA) and Griffonia simplicifolia agglutinin-I (GS-I) were negative in the seminiferous epithelium, but soybean (Glycine max) agglutinin (SBA), Griffonia simplicifolia agglutinin-II (GS-II) and peanut (Arachis hypogaea) agglutinin (PNA) were positive in the acrosomal vesicle of the Golgi-phase spermatids and in the acrosome of the cap-, acrosome- and maturation-phase spermatids. In addition, PNA was positive also in the plasma membrane and cytoplasm of the spermatogenic cells from the late pachytene spermatocytes to the maturation-phase spermatids. This finding indicates that glycoconjugates containing D-galactose residue appear at this period. Therefore, PNA may be a useful marker of developing spermatogenic cells. Electron microscopically, the positive reactions of SBA, GS-II and PNA were demonstrated in the central dense area (acrosomal granule) of the cap-phase spermatid acrosome, but not in the peripheral low-dense area. These results indicate that the lectin-bindings in the goat testis not only are common features, but also have patterns somewhat different from those in other mammals in such a way that GS-II can be detected in the acrosomal region of all phases of spermatids and that PNA is positive in the late spermatid acrosome.     

Compression plating of radial and ulnar fractures in the goat.

Internal fixation of radial and ulnar fractures in three goats was accomplished using bone plates. Intervals between the time of fracture and internal fixation varied from one to 13 days. The goats were ambulatory the day after surgery, and recoveries were uneventful.

利用安哥拉山羊与当地土种山羊进行杂交改良，产绒量比本地羊增加两倍以上，有髓毛减少，绒毛增多。杂种羊具有耐粗饲、抗病力强，生长发育相对快等杂种优势。试验组比对照组成活率提高4．16个百分点，繁活率提高4．44个百分点。
