Total parenteral nutrition was accomplished in 4 healthy adult horses. During the 10-day study, the horses were not permitted to ingest food or water. Body weight was maintained at 94% of initial values without clinical evidence of dehydration. Serum urea nitrogen and triacylglycerol concentrations decreased during the study, without other significant hematologic or biochemical changes. Horses adapted without problems to the routine of IV feeding and confinement. All horses were healthy at the conclusion of the study. It was concluded that intravenous feeding with a lipid-glucose-amino acid-electrolyte solution was an acceptable method of maintaining nutrition in the healthy adult horse.  相似文献

Horses are reared in all types of weather. Temperatures as diverse as -40 degrees C to 40 degrees C are tolerated by horses. The nutrient requirement most influenced by cold weather is energy. In cold weather, feeding good quality hays free-choice is usually sufficient for mature horses in good body condition. Grain may have to be fed when poor quality hays are used. Hot weather (greater than 30 degrees C) necessitates heat loss to maintain body core temperature. Horses sweat to reduce body heat. Heat stress can be minimized by feeding diets that reduce the heat increment. Use of grain and fat in the diet, which have a lower heat increment than fibrous feeds such as hays, may benefit horses in hot climates. Wind or precipitation necessitate protection to minimize chilling in cold weather and discomfort in hot weather. However, it is a moot point whether horses will use shelters under these circumstances.  相似文献

Horses suffering from trauma, sepsis, and severe burns need 12% to 16% of protein (dry matter basis) in their diet. Since reduced appetite may be a problem, relatively energy dense (greater than 2 Mcal DE/kg) feeds should be offered. In hepatic failure, maintenance protein requirements (8% on a dry matter basis for adult horses) should be met with feeds that are high in short branched-chain amino acids and arginine but low in aromatic amino acids and tryptophan (for example, milo, corn, soybean, or linseed meal) in addition to grass hay. Vitamins A, C, and E should also be supplemented. In cases with renal failure, protein, calcium, and phosphorus should be restricted to maintenance or lower levels. Grass hay and corn are the best feeds for horses with reduced renal function. Do not offer free-choice salt to horses with dependent edema from uncompensated chronic heart failure. Following gastrointestinal resection, legume hay and grain mixtures are the feeds of choice. Horses with diarrhea should not be deprived or oral or enteral alimentation for prolonged periods of time. Liquid formulas may be used if bulk or gastrointestinal motility are a problem. Apple cider vinegar and a high grain diet may reduce the incidence of enteroliths in horses prone to this problem. Pelleted feeds will reduce fecal volume and produce softer feces for horses that have had rectovaginal lacerations or surgery. Horses with small intestinal dysfunction or resection should be offered low residue diets initially, but long-term maintenance requires diets that promote large intestinal digestion (alfalfa hay, vegetable oil, restricted grain). Geriatric horses (greater than 20 years old need diets similar to those recommended for horses 6 to 18 months old.  相似文献

Subepiglottic cysts (SECs) are an infrequent cause of upper respiratory tract noise and exercise intolerance in horses. They may also be associated with no clinical signs and be an incidental finding during routine upper airway endoscopy. The aim of this study was to assess the effect on performance of horses undergoing surgical removal of SECs. The case records of 15 horses (1995–2009) diagnosed with SECs were retrieved. Eleven (73%) of the 15 horses included in the study were Thoroughbred racehorses. Eleven (73%) of the 15 horses had no preoperative clinical signs related to the SECs, with the remaining 4 (27%) having a respiratory noise (n = 4), nasal discharge (n = 1), difficulty swallowing (n = 1) or a cough (n = 1). Endoscopic examination in the standing horse was diagnostic in 93% (n = 14) of horses. Nine (82%) of the 11 Thoroughbred horses were yearlings, of which only one horse (11%) presented with clinical signs consisting of a respiratory noise and nasal discharge. Four of the 11 (36%) Thoroughbred horses were found to have concurrent epiglottic entrapment. Surgical removal was successful in all cases. Eight of the 11 (73%) Thoroughbred horses in this study raced following SEC removal. The majority of SECs are identified during routine endoscopic examinations and are not associated with clinical signs. The prognosis following surgical removal of SECs is good and future performance does not appear to be affected.  相似文献

Parenteral nutrition has been an important adjunct to therapy of abdominal diseases in calves, with chronic diarrhea and wasting being the most common indication. Parenteral nutrition is administered on a short-term basis to prevent further protein-energy malnutrition in debilitated calves that cannot or will not consume adequate quantities of milk. Parenteral nutrition solutions consist of a protein source (amino acids) and energy sources (glucose and lipid emulsions), supplemented as needed with balanced electrolytes and vitamins. Complications due to PPN are rare, and it is the authors' clinical impression that survivability is enhanced when PPN is employed, although enhanced survivability was not demonstrated in one controlled experimental trial.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the plasma pharmacokinetics and clinical effects of pirfenidone administered IV in healthy horses. ANIMALS: 6 adult horses. PROCEDURES: A 15 mg/kg dose of pirfenidone was administered IV over 5 minutes. Physical variables were recorded and blood samples collected prior to infusion; 2.5 minutes after beginning infusion; at the end of infusion; and at 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40, 50, 60, 75, and 90 minutes and 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, and 24 hours after completion of infusion. Plasma concentrations of pirfenidone and its metabolites were determined. RESULTS: Mild clinical effects, including tachycardia and muscle fasciculations, were observed during drug administration but stopped at the end of the infusion. Pirfenidone and 2 metabolites, hydroxypirfenidone and carboxypirfenidone, were detected by the end of the 5-minute infusion. Mean peak plasma concentration of pirfenidone was 182.5 micromol/L, detected at the end of the infusion. Mean peak plasma concentrations of hydroxypirfenidone and carboxypirfenidone were 1.07 and 3.4 micromol/L, respectively, at 40 minutes after infusion. No parent drug or metabolites were detected at 24 hours. Distribution of pirfenidone best fit a 2-compartment model, and the drug had mean +/- SEM elimination half-life of 86.0 +/- 4.7 minutes, mean body clearance of 6.54 +/- 0.45 mL/kg/min, and apparent volume of distribution at steady state of 0.791 +/- 0.056 L/kg. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Intravenous administration of pirfenidone was tolerated with transient adverse affects during infusion, and drug clearance was rapid.  相似文献

Total parenteral nutrition in clinically normal cats   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Seven clinically normal cats were maintained on total parenteral nutrition (TPN) with nothing given PO for 2 weeks. The TPN solution consisted of a mixture of dextrose, amino acids, soybean oil emulsion, electrolytes, and vitamins. Three cats were fed calories in excess of published maintenance requirements, and they gained some weight, vomited occasionally, had oral ulcerations, and had signs of depression after 10 to 13 days on TPN. Four cats that were not overfed did well clinically and maintained stable body weights. All cats developed anemia and thrombocytopenia to varying degrees during TPN administration and had polyuria and serum triglyceride concentrations higher than normal fasting values. Some cats had changes in liver-specific biochemical variables. Hepatocellular swelling and vacuolation and small intestinal villous atrophy and fusion were the most common histopathologic changes seen after TPN. These changes were reversible when TPN was discontinued and the cats were returned to enteral nutrition.  相似文献

Anamnesis and clinical signs of horses form five different stables after ingestion of ionophores are reported and techniques of feed examination are described. Within a few hours or days after feeding of new types or batches of concentrates horses fell ill. They showed colic-like symptoms with intense sweating and ataxia. Most of the sick animals died within a short time span. Samples of the concentrates were analysed and different types and amounts of ionophores were detected. In four cases contamination by monensin in concentrations of less than 5 mg to 679 mg/kg feed were found. One feed sample contained monensin (8.8 mg/kg feed) as well as salinomycin (67.3 mg/kg feed). In one case lasalocid (7.9 mg/kg feed) was present. One horse from the stable where animals had obtained concentrates containing monensin (679 mg/kg feed) was necropsied. Typical signs of monensin intoxication with severe myocardial degeneration were found. Veterinarians should be alert to this rare but severe intoxication of horses.  相似文献

Fifteen cases of radial fractures in adult horses weighing more than 300 kg are discussed. Four of the horses were destroyed on humane grounds immediately because of a poor prognosis and expense of internal fixation; and two horses at five days and five weeks, respectively after treatment by cast application was initiated. Internal fixation was used in nine horses but of these only two horses recovered completely and resumed their former activities. In eight cases, two plates were applied, one lateral or medial and the other cranial. The internal fixation techniques of all nine horses were scrutinised and suggestions made for the future treatment of radial fractures. These suggestions are (1) the use of ASIF 5.5 mm cortical bone screws using the total width or thickness of the bone in each case. (2) Application of the dynamic condylar screw with its plate in distal or proximal fractures to allow more support. (3) Incorporation of a cancellous bone graft to the fracture. (4) Possible table recovery to prevent breakdown of the fixation during recovery. It is important that bone plates are applied over the total length of the bone. The fact that only two out of 15 horses survived and recovered completely underlines the problems associated with treatment of radial fractures in the adult horse.  相似文献

Horses (n=35) underwent orchidectomy in a single institution with a re-sterilised LSA as sole means of haemostasis. During the surgery, the gross quality of the seal, the stickiness of the forceps to the tissues, bleeding/oozing from the stump and the need for a subsequent application in already severed spermatic cord were assessed for haemostasis quality. After surgery, physical parameters (appearance of the mucous membranes, quality of the peripheral pulse, heart rate, respiratory rate, rectal temperature and blood dripping from the incisions), haematology or packed cell volume and total protein were monitored to assess signs of bleeding or any other condition. For cleanliness and asepsis assessment, signs of surgical infection were recorded. Complications during surgery were mild degree of sticking of the LSA forceps to the tissues and dulling of the blade. There was no need to reapply LSA a second time except in one horse. This means a haemostasis complication rate of 2.85 per cent of the horses. No postoperative bleeding was detected. Only two horses with fever had associated signs of surgical site infection. This means an infection rate of 5.71 per cent of the horses.  相似文献

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: There is an absence of data describing the nutritional requirements and nutritional status of horses following surgery for colic; furthermore, the potential effect of parenteral nutrition (PN) on improving nutritional status in such cases is unknown. HYPOTHESIS: Post operative colic cases suffer from a potentially detrimental negative energy balance and the PN formulation developed in this study would lead to clinicopathologically detectable improvements in the subjects' nutritional status. METHODS: Several clinicopathological variables, some known to be associated with nutritional status, were compared in 2 groups of horses in the post operative period following colic surgery; Group N (n = 15) were treated with PN and Group C (n = 15) were starved routinely. RESULTS: Group N had significantly lower serum concentrations of triglycerides, total bilirubin, albumin and urea and significantly higher serum concentrations of glucose and insulin compared with Group C in the post operative period. CONCLUSIONS: The control group of horses demonstrated significant clinicopathological evidence of starvation and the described PN protocol resulted in a demonstrably improved nutritional status in the treated horses. POTENTIAL RELEVANCE: Further study is required to investigate clinical benefits and possible harmful side effects of post operative parenteral nutrition before the technique can be advocated for widespread use in practice.  相似文献

Twenty-five horses admitted for minor orthopaedic or soft tissue surgery were anaesthetised with detomidine, ketamine and halothane. Heart rate, arterial blood pressure, respiratory rate, tidal volume, minute volume, blood gases and occlusion pressures were measured before and for 30 mins after intravenous (iv) injection of saline, butorphanol 0.05 mg/kg bodyweight (bwt) or morphine 0.02 or 0.05 mg/kg bwt. Drug or saline treatment induced no significant changes from pre-treatment values within a group for arterial blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, arterial carbon dioxide tension, arterial oxygen tension and occlusion pressure. In conclusion, both morphine and butorphanol at the stated doses cause no adverse effects on the cardiovascular and respiratory systems of anaesthetised horses.  相似文献
