The present study was carried out on the oropharyngeal cavity of the hooded crow to investigate the gross and microscopic structures via gross anatomy, light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The gross anatomy clarified the elongated triangular shape of the oropharyngeal cavity with a non-protruding tongue with a bifid apex. The lingual body contained median groove rostrally and separated caudally from the root by a transverse papillary crest. The laryngeal mound located posterior to the lingual root, contained midline laryngeal cleft and bounded caudally by a transverse row of pharyngeal papillae. The palate contained choanal cleft rostrally and infundibular slit caudally in addition to five palatine ridges. By light microscopy, the dorsal lingual epithelium was highly keratinised stratified squamous with a lingual nail in the most rostral part of the apex. Then, the thickness of the keratin layer decreased caudally, while in the ventral surface, the lining epithelium became non-keratinised. The entoglossum supported the lingual body and root, but not extended to the apex. The lining epithelium of the palate was also keratinised stratified squamous and became none-keratinised at the oral side of the choanal cleft. There were numerous lobules of polystomatic salivary glands in the lingual root and the palate. SEM revealed the arrangement of different types of papillae covering both the floor and the roof of the oropharynx besides numerous openings of salivary glands in the lingual root, laryngeal mound and the palate. These findings reflect the functional relationship of the oropharyngeal cavity of the hooded crow during feeding.  相似文献

Microscopic observations were made of sections of normal bovine uterine tube (oviduct) and fimbriae maintained in vitro and exposed to agents known to localize in the bovine genital tract, i.e., mycoplasma, Trichomonas fetus, and Campylobacter fetus (Vibrio fetus). Only C fetus stopped ciliary activity. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed loss of most cilia. Sterile filtrate of C fetus culture had no effect.  相似文献

Lice have been described on goats in commercial farming systems in South Africa but not from flocks on communal grazing. During a longitudinal survey on the causes of goat kid mortality, conducted in Jericho district, North West Province, lice were collected from communally grazed indigenous goats. These lice were prepared for and viewed by scanning electron microscopy, and micro-morphological taxonomic details are described. Three species of lice were found in the study area and identified as Bovicola caprae, Bovicola limbatus and Linognathus africanus. Sucking and biting lice were found in ten of the 12 herds of goats examined. Lice were found on both mature goats and kids. Bovicola caprae and L. africanus were the most common biting and sucking lice respectively in all herds examined. Scanning electron microscopy revealed additional features which aided in the identification of the louse species. Photomicrographs were more accurate aids to identification than the line drawings in the literature and facilitated identification using dissecting microscope.  相似文献

The remnant of ultimobranchial (UB) body in the thyroid gland of adult buffalo was studied. This remnant appeared in the form of irregular and elongated follicles of various size and shape with folded lumen. These structures occupied a peripheral location beneath the capsule, as well as being embedded mostly in the vascular connective tissue of the thyroid. Calcitonin cells were predominantly localized in the UB follicles. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that surface of most UB follicular cells was almost flat and polyhedral or hexagonal in shape. Other follicles possessed cells with dome shaped apical surface demarcated by a shallow intercellular depression. The luminal surface of the follicular cell lining was studded with microvilli that appeared with various density and length and were numerous at the cellular borders. Interestingly, most of UB follicular cells were provided with single cilium, projecting over the cell surface. Notably some UB follicles presented various stages of apocrine activities.  相似文献

Megakaryocyte morphology and platelet formation in canine and murine bone marrows were studied by scanning electron microscopy. In situ-fixed bone marrow preparations and cell suspensions of bone marrow provided complementary information for the 2 species (dogs and rats). Cylindrical processes (proplatelets) of variable length and thickness, originating from the megakaryocyte surface, were in the larger marrow sinusoids and the central vein. Regional constrictions along the length of proplatelets, particularly near their apical region, and the presence of fragments of such processes supported the concept of platelet formation through segmentation of proplatelets. Megakaryocytes presented varied morphology. Surface features resembling platelets were observed on megakaryocytes, indicating that platelets may have been released through surface budding. In conclusion, megakaryocytes formed long proplatelet processes that actively migrated to venous sinusoids to release platelets by fragmentation. Scanning electron microscopy analysis revealed a complex and variable megakaryocyte surface topography. The platelet-like structures on megakaryocyte surfaces may represent platelet release by a budding mechanism. The similarity between murine platelet release and canine platelet release demonstrates that data from rodent models may be applicable to nonrodents.  相似文献

The ultrastructure of the Harderian gland of Atlantic bottlenose dolphin ( Tursiops truncatus ) was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). We found the following surface features: the typical round appearance of the ascinar glandular unit with a finely granular surface, a thin cortex and immediately below two types of cells: type I cells (characterized by small lipid vacuoles) and type II cells (characterized by large lipid vacuoles). It has been suggested that different cells forms represent a single cell type in varying activity states. Additionally, a coalescent tubular complex, a small balloon-like structures and large globular structures were observed. These structures may be reservoirs of secretion products.  相似文献

A group of 10-week-old puppies was orally inoculated with canine parvovirus of faecal origin. Scanning electron microscopy was used to study and compare the surface topography in both control and inoculated animals. In control dogs the villi were tall and finger-like in shape and numerous irregular transverse circumferential grooves were present on the surface. At higher magnification, the outlines of individual epithelial cells and depressions, interpreted as goblet cells, could be discerned. In the inoculated dogs, scanning electron microscopy changes were first seen at six days after inoculation. The small intestinal mucosa was covered by a thick layer of mucus. The underlying villi were stunted and had lost their surface features. In some instances there was loss of the luminal epithelium, exposing the lamina propria. In addition, there was dilation of the circumvillar basins and the crypt mouths. There appeared to be regenerative changes by day 7 after inoculation. The surface of the small intestinal mucosa was still covered by a thick layer of mucus. Where villi could be discerned, they were short and pointed and transverse grooves could be seen on their surface. There was some hypertrophy of the intervillus ridges. The changes in the surface topography of the small intestinal mucosa following canine parvovirus infection are compared to those seen in enteric infections in other species and the similarity of the lesion to that seen following sublethal irradiation is discussed.  相似文献

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to study the surface ultrastructure of adult worms of Gongylonema pulchrum. The anterior end in both sexes was covered by numerous cuticular platelets. There was a pair of lateral cervical papillac. The buccal opening was small and extended in the dorsoventral direction. Around the mouth a cuticular elevation enclosed the labia, and eight papillae were located laterodorsally and lateroventrally. Two large lateral amphids were seen. On the lateral sides of the female's tail, phasmidal apertures were observed. The caudal end of the male was asymmetrically alate and bore 10 pairs of papillae and two phasmidal apertures.  相似文献

Scanning and transmission electron microscopy were used to study in detail the morphogenesis and replication of equine infectious anemia virus (EIAV) in cultured, persistently infected equine fetal kidney fibroblasts. The EIAV was shown by thin-section electron microscopy to resemble morphologically more closely the members of the genus Lenti-virus in the family Retroviridae than other genera. Scanning electron microscopy demonstrated budding virus on only about 5% of the equine fetal kidney fibroblasts; however, the entire surface of these cells was involved in viral replication. Except where virus budding was observed, EIAV-infected cells were smooth and free of the topographic surface alterations characteristic of cells transformed by type C retroviruses. The morphologic relationship of EIAV and pathologic manifestations of EIAV infection to those of other Retroviridae are discussed.  相似文献

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to study the surface ultrastructure of female Thelazia lacrymalis obtained from naturally infected cattle. At the anterior end, the buccal capsule was cup shaped. The mouth was without lips and was surrounded by four cephalic papillae and two amphids. There were two lateral cervical papillae. Also, a single small papilla was seen on the ventral side, close to the vulvar opening. The vulva was located posterior to the end of the oesophagus and the tail carried an anal pore and a pair of phasmids near the tip. The association of Leptospira borgpetersenii serovar hardjo type hardjobovis with bovine embryos produced by in vitro fertilization was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Morula stage embryos with an intact zona pellucida (ZP) were exposed to this spirochete for 24 h in culture medium, washed by the standard washing procedure as recommended by the International Embryo Transfer Society, and then examined. SEM showed typical helicoid leptospires on the surface and in the pores of the ZP. TEM showed cross and longitudinal sections of leptospires in the matrix and channels of the ZP, in the perivitelline and intercellular spaces, on the vitellus and in the embryonic cells. Some of the embryos that were penetrated showed damage to the membranes and the cytoplasm. The ineffectiveness of the washing procedure, for the removal of hardjobovis from exposed embryos may be of importance to the industry.  相似文献

The effects of the collagenolytic cell wall component (CCWC) of Fusobacterium necrophorum subsp. necrophorum on bovine hepatic cell and cytoskeletons were investigated. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) demonstrated that CCWC damaged the cell surfaces, forming tiny holes on the cell membranes. Sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) profiles revealed that CCWC degraded bovine cytokeratin and vimentin and by indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) method, it was shown that CCWC caused the deformation of hepatocellular vimentin. This suggested that CCWC contributes to bovine hepatic injury and it may be as important pathogenic factor in the development of bovine hepatic abscesses.  相似文献

The ring‐tailed coati (Nasua nasua) is a procyonid whose population is in sharp decline. Therefore, studies are needed to better understand the reproduction of this animal. For this reason, this study aimed to evaluate the morphology, morphometry and sperm ultrastructure of ring‐tailed coati sperm. Four captive adult males were used for this study. Slides stained with Bengal Rose were used for the morphometric and morphologic analyses. The length and width of the head were measured, as well as the length of the midpiece and tail and the total length of the sperm. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy were used for the ultrastructural analyses. The most obvious morphological abnormalities observed were coiled tails (6.1 ± 8.7%) and the lack of acrosomes (5.4 ± 4.4%). Regarding the morphometry, the measurements of the head (length × width), midpiece (length) and tail (length) were (mean ± SD) 6.2 ± 0.4 × 8.1 ± 0.6 μm, 14.1 ± 0.5 and 63.9 ± 4.1 μm, respectively, and the total length of the sperm was 86.1 ± 4.3 μm. Through electron microscopy, the presence of electron‐lucent points in the nucleus and the presence of approximately 55 mitochondrial spirals in the midpiece were identified. The data obtained in this study provide detailed information on the sperm characteristics of coatis and may inform future research on germplasm conservation, both for this species and other threatened procyonids.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To characterize structural changes in pulmonary vessels of dogs with dirofilariosis. ANIMALS: 8 dogs with dirofilariosis and 2 unaffected control dogs. PROCEDURE: Pulmonary artery pressure was measured in affected dogs, and dogs then were euthanatized. Scanning electron microscopy was used to examine vascular corrosion casts of pulmonary vasculature. Tissue sections of pulmonary vasculature were evaluated by use of histologic examination. RESULTS: Pulmonary artery pressure was higher in dogs with severely affected pulmonary vessels. In tissue sections, dilatation, as well as lesions in the tunica intima and proliferative lesions resulting in constriction or obstruction, were frequently observed in branches of the pulmonary artery. Numerous dilated bronchial arteries were observed around affected pulmonary arteries. Hyperplastic venous sphincters were observed in small pulmonary veins and venules. In corrosion casts, affected pulmonary lobar arteries had dilatation, pruning, abnormal tapering, constriction, and obstruction. In small arteries and arterioles, surface structures representing aneurisms and edema were seen. Bronchial arteries were well developed and extremely dilated, and they formed numerous anastomoses with pulmonary arteries at all levels, from the pulmonary trunk to peripheral vessels. Capillaries in the lungs were dilated with little structural change. Small pulmonary veins and venules had irregular annular constrictions that were caused by hyperplastic smooth muscle cells of venous sphincters. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Scanning electron microscopy of microvascular casts delineated links between the bronchial and pulmonary circulations in dogs with dirofilariosis. Results of scanning electron microscopy provided a structural explanation for the development of pulmonary circulatory disturbances and pulmonary hypertension in dogs affected by dirofilariosis.  相似文献

Membrane alterations in bull spermatozoa after freezing and thawing and after the process of in vitro capacitation and fertilization were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Even if the majority of the spermatozoa exhibited intact membranes after freezing and thawing (90%), one could distinguish between 3 types of membrane defects depending of the different structures involved. The first type showed loss of plasmalemma over the entire acrosome. In the second category the anterior part of the outer acrosomal membrane exhibited a pronounced extension, but was covered by a partly intact plasmalemma. The last category consisted of spermatozoa with extensive vesiculation and disruption of plasmalemma and the outer acrosomal membrane. This type of defect could not easily be distinguished from a true acrosome reaction. The cumulus cells showed an active phagocytosis of both intact and acrosome reacted spermatozoa.  相似文献

The formation of dental calculus in dogs is a major problem. Scanning electron microscopy of tartar specimens from dogs revealed on the outer surface of the plaque polymorphic configurations, more or less arranged as free filaments, corn-cobs or swab-like structures. Uninhabited bacterial recesses were found on the inner surface of the calculus. Calcification may occur between or within the bacteria. Elucidating the mechanisms of calculus formation should help in the development of prophylactic measures.  相似文献

Microvascular changes in the mammary gland in mice during pregnancy and lactation were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with a corrosion cast method, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and morphometry. By SEM, duct-associated capillary plexuses were sparsely distributed to branch into adipocytes during virgin period. With advance in pregnancy, both branches from the capillary plexuses and branches from the vessels surrounding adipocytes extended further to form capillary networks. The basket-like architecture was completed by day 18 of pregnancy. These findings may indicate that angiogenesis occurs frequently during this period. During lactation, the basket-like architecture still remained and the capillaries surrounding alveoli meandered. After weaning, the regression of microvasculature followed the degeneration of alveoli. By TEM and morphometry, the density of pinocytotic vesicles (PVs) (number of PVs per microns 2 of endothelium cytoplasm) increased twofold from day 18 of pregnancy to day 5 of lactation, furthermore increased threefold from days 10 to 20 of lactation, and subsequently decreased after weaning. Marginal folds and microvillous processes gradually increased in length with advance in pregnancy, reached the maximum from days 5 to 15 of lactation, and thereafter decreased. In addition, the capillaries with thinner walls were in close contact with alveoli during the late stage of pregnancy and during lactation. Furthermore, the alveolar epithelial cells had well-developed basal infoldings during lactation. These findings suggest that the capillaries play an important role in transporting materials necessary for milk production.  相似文献

Scanning electron microscopy revealed that lesions of sarcoptic mange in swine, pass through 3 different stages. During the first 3 weeks of infestation, adult female mites tunnel into the epidermis. During the following 3 or 4 weeks, the surface openings of these tunnels become covered with keratinized epidermal crust which increases in thickness. After 7 weeks of infestation, the crust falls off, the tunnel openings become apparent again and most of the mites vacate these tunnels.  相似文献
