In a range of perennial ryegrass/white clover swards, variation in the surface heights of the grass and clover components, the rates of increase of these surface heights and the specific leaf areas (SLAs) of ryegrass and white clover were described for 1 year. The swards were of an early- or late-flowering (Aurora or Melle respectively) perennial ryegrass variety growing with either a small- or a medium-leaved (Kent or Milkanova) white clover and were either continuously stocked by sheep or continuously stocked apart from a rest period in April-May (Aurora) or May-June (Melle).
The surface heights of grass and clover were not affected by the variety of their companion species, and the surface heights of the two clover varieties were similar. The grass was always taller than the clover, although the magnitude of the difference between the species varied with time of year and the timing of the rest period.
Before the summer solstice the rate of increase in height of grass was greater than that of clover except at cool temperatures (5°C) and warm temperatures (16°C), and in the unrested Melle sward. After the solstice the rates of increase in height, particularly of clover, were lower than the rates seen at similar temperatures before the solstice.
Overall, the SLAs of both clover varieties were greater than those of ryegrass when grown with Aurora but not when grown with Melle, and the SLAs of both species increased during the year. By October the SLAs of both grass varieties were less than those of their companion clovers.
The results are discussed in relation to their implications for the species composition of the swards.  相似文献

The effects of two periods of rest from grazing by sheep (either April-May or May-June) on the composition of swards of both an early-flowering (Aurora) and a late-flowering (Melle) perennial ryegrass variety grown with cither a small-leaved (Kent) or a medium-leaved (Milkanova) white clover variety are described. Compared with a continuously stocked treatment, the early rest period did not affect the mass of clover in the swards (expressed as a proportion of the total) but resulted in a subsequent decrease in its population density. The late rest period doubled clover mass in the swards at the time of cutting but did not affect the subsequent population density of clover. The magnitude of the change in mass during the late rest period depended on ryegrass variety, but not on clover variety. The adverse effect of the early rest period on the subsequent population density of clover was associated with the degree of shading experienced by clover laminae at the end of the rest period. Temperature may also have had an effect here as mean temperatures were cooler during the early rest period than during the late rest period. It is concluded that the effects of the two rest periods on the clover content of the swards were primarily due to timing, and less to inherent differences between ryegrass varieties.  相似文献

Microswards of white clover and perennial ryegrass were subjected to one of four treatments: weekly cutting to 3·5 cm, weekly cutting incorporating a period of no cutting for 6 weeks starting 27 April (early rest), weekly cutting incorporating a period of no cutting for 6 weeks starting 8 June (late rest), or cutting every 3 weeks. Two sward types were used: a mixture of white clover cv. Milkanova with perennial ryegrass cv. Melle, and white clover cv. Kent with perennial ryegrass cv. Melle. Growth measurements (leaf appearance, branching/tillering and stolon internode length) were confined to the first three treatments with records collected during contiguous 21-d measurement periods. Vertical height increments of clover and grass and red:far-red light ratios at the sward bases were also recorded at frequent intervals. At the end of the experiment population densities and unit weights were recorded for all treatments. Significant treatment effects on the rate processes were largely confined to the 21-d period immediately after weekly cutting of rested swards had resumed. On previously rested compared with weekly cut swards, clover leaf appearance rates were increased by 40% and branching rates by 164%. During the same period, grass leaf appearance rates were reduced by 50% and net tillering changed from positive to negative values. Though the rate responses were transient, effects were still apparent at harvest in September, when population density and content (proportion by population density and weight) of clover were significantly higher in the late rest treatment. The variety Kent showed a consistent, though usually nonsignificant, higher leaf appearance and branching rate compared with Milkanova, and in September was characterized by a higher population (7400 m?2 compared to 3200 m?2) of smaller units (27 compared to 46 mg/apical meristem) than Milkanova. The results are discussed in relation to defoliation effects and the role of light quantity and quality as they influence the component growth processes. Attention is drawn to the importance of canopy structure and the climatic and/or phenological differences in the relative seasonal behaviour of clover and grass, together with varietal variation within species in influencing responses to management manipulations.  相似文献

White clover content and herbage production in grass/clover swards were studied at contrasting altitudes in Wales. The lowland experiment (1) compared the performance of three clover varieties grown with four diploid perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne ) varieties with a range of heading dates. In the upland experiment (2) the productivity and persistence of Aberystwyth S184 (small-leaved) clover was studied in association with three perennial ryegrasses.
In experiment I. clover content and dry matter production with Aurora (very early) ryegrass was superior to that with Frances (early), Talbot (intermediate) and Melle (late). Furthermore, the performance of Kent wild white clover (small-leaved) was better than that of medium-leaved Menna and Grasslands Huia. Averaged over two years (1985 and 1986) mean clover content of Kent was 22% compared with 9% and 10% of Menna and Huia.
Performance of S184 clover during the five years (1986–90) of experiment 2 was better with Meltra (late tetraploid) than with Aberystwyth S23 (late diploid) and intermediate with Aurora. Clover stolon length and growing point number declined to a low level in 1988 but increased dramatically in 1989 and 1990 after cessation of applying fertilizer N.
Results from both sites were related to animal performance data previously published. It is concluded that small-leaved clover varieties are needed to ensure a high proportion of clover in sheep pastures and also that choice of companion ryegrass can have a significant effect on the performance of the legume component.  相似文献

Comparative herbage characteristics and sheep production (ewes and lambs until weaning and lambs thereafter) from swards of Aurora (very early flowering), Frances (early flowering), Talbot (intermediate flowering) and Melle (late flowering) varieties of perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne ) were studied under a continuous variable stocking management based on sward surface height guidelines. The varieties were assessed as grass-only (215 kg N ha−1 fertilizer) and grass/clover (83 kg N ha−1 fertilizer) pastures.
Over 2 years (1985-86) total annual lamb production per hectare from grass-only swards of Aurora was 19% more than that from Frances despite similar herbage productivity. Differences between the varieties in lamb output were more pronounced as grass/clover swards, with Aurora producing 29 and 18% more lamb than Melle and Talbot respectively and with Frances also giving 16% more than Melle. Overall lamb production from grass/clover swards was 10% more than that from the grass-only pastures, mainly due to 69% advantage in individual lamb growth rates after weaning. Herbage organic matter digestibility, during the post-weaning period, was higher on grass/clover than on grass-only swards, and similarly with Aurora versus the other varieties. Under a frequent cut simulated grazing regime the relative herbage productivity of the four varieties differed, with Aurora 13% less productive than Frances.
The results are discussed in relation to the limitations of assessing performance under cutting, and the significance of the interaction in animal productivity between the two sward types.  相似文献

In a small-plot trial five grass varieties bromegrass cv. Grasslands Matua, perennial ryegrass CVS. Melle (diploid) and Bastion, Condesa and Meltra (tetraploid) were established as grass/white clover swards with white clover cv. Menna. Productivity was measured under 6-weekIy cutting both without N fertilizer (No) and with 100 kg N ha?1 applied in spring (N100) Evaluation was made over 2 harvest years, 1986–87. Total mean annual production of herbage dry matter (DM) in the first harvest year at No and No was 5·07 t ha?1 and 6·93 t ha?1 respectively. In year 2, corresponding values were 11·81 and 12·67 t ha?1. In year 1, Matua swards at No and N100 yielded 5·08 and 6·65 t DM ha?1 compared with 507 and 70 t DM ha?1 for the mean of the four ryegrass varieties. In year 2, corresponding values were 12·90 and 12·29 for Matua and 11·54 and 12·78 for the four ryegrasses. In year 1, the digestable organic matter in the dry matter (DOMD) of the Matua swards was lower than that of Melle, Bastion and Condesa at NO, particularly at the first cut. In year 2, differences in DOMD between treatments and varieties were not significant. The proportion of white clover was found to be higher in the No than the N100 treatment, and also higher in year 2 in most treatments. For the No treatment Matua swards had the highest proportion of white clover in year 1 (32% compared with 24% for the mean of the ryegrass varieties) but the lowest proportion in year 2 (27% compared with 60% for the ryegrasses). For the No treatment in year 1 clover production was also 43% higher, on average, from the tetraploid treatments than with Melle as the companion grass; for this comparison in year 2 the differences were not significant. It is concluded that Matua bromegrass/white clover swards receiving no N fertilizer may have a good potential under cutting management. However, the evidence from this trial is that in the second year the proportion of white clover is lower with Matua swards than with perennial ryegrass as the companion grass.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted to examine how variation in the composition and structure of mixed grass/white clover swards affected diet selection by sheep and goats. Sward composition in a mixed perennial ryegrass/white clover sward was manipulated by continuous grazing from 28 May to 28 July (pre-experimental phase) with cattle, sheep or goats, and then from 29 July to 2 September (experimental phase) with sheep or goats in a factorial design replicated twice. Sward surface height was maintained at 6 cm by regular adjustment of stocking density. Grazing by different sequences of animal species resulted in significant differences in the proportions of white clover in the sward, and especially in the proportion of clover lamina and petiole. Grazing by goats in the pre-experimental phase led to greater proportions of clover lamina and petiole in the whole sward and the sward surface. The proportion of white clover in the diet selected by sheep in the experimental phase was consistently higher than that in the sward as a whole, but was closely related to that near to the sward surface (approximately the top 2 cm). For goats there was no significant relationship between the proportion of clover in the diet and in the whole sward, and they generally selected a diet with a lower proportion of white clover than was present in approximately the top 2 cm of the sward. It is concluded that on mixed grass/white clover swards goats do not graze as deeply into the sward as sheep and that this results in a lower proportion of white clover in their diet and therefore allows higher proportions of white clover to develop under grazing by goats than by sheep.  相似文献

Seeds of six cultivars of white clover were sown in 1983 in slots in tares of permanent pasture in soil-filled tanks in spring and in small plots in the field during midsummer. The clover cultivars investigated were the large-leaved Olwin and Milk nova, the medium-leaved Grasslands Huia and Aberystwyth S100, and the small-leaved Kent Wild White and Aberystwyth S184. Seeds from an indigenous clover population were also sown in the tanks. All herbage was defoliated at three- to six-week intervals to simulate rotational grazing and assessments were made until autumn 1984.
Leaf and stolon production and spread of stolons from the slots were more rapid in Milkanova, S184, Huia and Kent than in Olwen and S100 In the tanks, harvested yields of clover leaf and petiole were largest for Milkanova and Olwen and least for the indigenous population; both Olwen and S100 had a smaller percentage of their total weight outside the slot area than had the other varieties. In the field, Milkanova greatly out yielded all other varieties and S100 yielded the least, contributing 48 and 27%, resf actively, to total herbage yield. The yield of grass differed little between varieties in tanks but in the field it tended to be higher with the smaller than with the larger-leaved varieties. Total herbage yield was largest for Olwen and Milkanova in tanks and for Milkanova in the field. The greatest weight of stolons in tanks was produced by Olwen and in the field by Olwen and Kent, but the greatest length of stolons and number of nodes in both environments occurred in the smalt-leaved varieties, especially Kent. Least length of stolons and fewest nodes in the tanks were produced by Olwen and in the field by Milkanova.
It was concluded that all the varieties investigated could be successfully slot-seeded into permanent pastures but that the choice of variety will depend on subsequent use and management of the resulting swards.  相似文献

A series of twenty-four swards containing different proportions of white clover (0·20-0·25) and perennial ryegrass were created by using different seed mixtures, herbicide applications and previous cutting Frequencies. These swards were used to study the diet of oesophageally-fistulated wether sheep which grazed the various swards for a 30-min period after 1, 2 and 3 weeks of regrowth.
The proportion of white clover in the diet was generally greater than that in the sward. Fifty-seven percent of the variation in the proportion of white clover in the diet could be attributed to the proportion of white clover in the sward. White clover and perennial ryegrass leaf and stem were grazed to the same height and the proportion of white clover in the grazed horizon of the sward explained 83% of the variation in the proportion of white clover in the diet. The proportion of white clover in the diet was greater than the proportion in the grazed horizon of the sward in week 3 of regrowth, but not in weeks 1 and 2, and greater when the proportion of white clover in the grazed horizon was lower than 0·20. Both these observations were interpreted as indicating selection for white clover by the sheep within the grazed horizon.
There was a positive and linear relationship between the depth of the grazed horizon and sward height which, together with the relationship between the proportion of white clover in the grazed horizon and in the diet, would allow the prediction of the proportion of white clover of the diet from the height and the white clover content of the grazed horizon of the sward.  相似文献

Relative sheep production from Aurora (very early flowering), Mellra (late-flowering tetraploid) and Aberystwyth S23 (late flowering) perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne L.) varieties was compared during harvest years 4-6 (1988-90) as grass only (200 kg N ha−1) and grass/clover (75 kg N ha −1 in 1988, 0 kg N ha−1 in 1989 and 1990) at Bronydd Mawr Research Centre (310-363 m) in mid-Wales. The pastures were continuously stocked with Beulah Speckled Face ewes and their Suffolk cross lambs from spring to mid-July. From late July to early November only the weaned lambs grazed the swards.
Mean (1988-90) total annual lamb production per hectare from Aurora and Meltra was 70% and 16% more than that from S23. However, the difference between both varieties and S23 was much greater as grass/clover (Aberystwyth S184 small-leaved type) than as grass-only swards. Differences between the grasses in individual lamb growth rates were most pronounced during the post-weaning period, when that on Meltra was 38% and 23% more than on Aurora and S23 respectively.
Mean annual lamb output from grass/clover swards was only 70% of that from grass-only swards during the 2 years when the former swards received no fertilizer N. Averaged over the 3 years (1988-90) individual lamb liveweight gain post weaning was 38% higher on grass/clover than on grass-only swards.
The results are discussed in relation to those for the first 3 harvest years (1985-87). It is concluded that, although Aurora was less persistent than both late-flowering varieties, its superiority in providing an average of 29% more lamb output than S23 during the critical spring period (up to early June) would be of considerable practical significance in upland sheep systems, as would be the overall superiority of the tetraploid Meltra over S23.  相似文献

Herbage characteristics were monitored over 3 years (1985–1987) in three perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne L.) varieties as grass/only (200 kg N ha−1) and grass/clover ( Trifolium repens L.) (75 kg N ha−1) swards when continuously stocked with sheep. Although mean total annual herbage production was similar from the grass varieties, growth of Aurora, a very early-flowering variety, was higher than that of Aberystwyth S23 and Meltra (tetraploid) late-flowering types in spring. Herbage production from grass-only swards was 15% higher than from grass/clover swards.
In vitro organic matter digestibility (OMD) of Aurora and Meltra was 34 g kg −1 and 26 g kg −1 higher ( P < 0·01) than that of S23. Averaged over varieties, the OMD of grass/clover was 25 g kg −1 higher ( P < 0·05) than grass-only during the post-weaning period. Individual lamb digestible organic matter intake (DOMI) was 22% higher ( P < 0·05) on grass/clover than on grass-only during this period. Water-soluble carbohydrates content of Aurora was 42% higher ( P < 0·001) than that of both Meltra and S23.
Herbage characteristics were related to lamb performance reported previously. Lamb production was positively correlated with DOMI. However, the magnitude of differences in lamb performance between treatments was much greater than the extent of differences detected in herbage characteristics.  相似文献

The high nutritive value and persistence under a wide range of climatic and soil fertility conditions make Caucasian clover a potentially useful forage legume but there is little information about the performance of livestock grazing Caucasian clover/grass swards. This study compared liveweight gains of lambs grazing Caucasian clover/perennial ryegrass and white clover/perennial ryegrass swards on high fertility (Olsen P 20 mg L?1, SO4‐S 12 mg kg?1) and low fertility (Olsen P 11 mg L?1, SO4‐S 7 mg kg?1) soils from 1998 to 2001 in the South Island of New Zealand. Mean annual liveweight gains were 1178 kg ha?1 for Caucasian clover/perennial ryegrass and 1069 kg ha?1 for white clover/perennial ryegrass swards at high fertility compared with 1094 kg ha?1 and 1015 kg ha?1, respectively, at low fertility. There was a higher mean proportion of clover in Caucasian clover/perennial ryegrass (0·19) than white clover/perennial ryegrass (0·11) swards, but there were no differences in total herbage production between the two clover/perennial ryegrass swards. The mean concentration of crude protein in the herbage of Caucasian clover (302 g kg DM?1) was higher than that in white clover (287 g kg DM?1) and grass herbage (227 g kg DM?1). Estimated mean metabolizable energy concentrations in the herbage were 12·5 MJ kg DM?1 for the two clovers and 11·6 MJ kg DM?1 for grass herbage. The difference in liveweight gain between swards on soils of high and low fertility was associated with an increase in total herbage production of similar composition and nutritive value, giving a greater number of grazing days for the swards on soils of high than low fertility.  相似文献

Mixtures of perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne L.) and white clover ( Trifolium repens L.) sown in alternate rows or in a thoroughly mixed matrix were grazed by sheep, either continuously or during short grazing tests, and were used to investigate the influence of the vertical and horizontal components of the sward structure on defoliation by sheep.
In an experiment under continuous grazing, the defoliation intensity was greater for white clover compared with perennial ryegrass leaves (0·80 and 0·58 respectively). In spring, perennial ryegrass leaves were more defoliated than white clover leaves, whereas the reverse was observed in summer. The ratio of the proportion of white clover to perennial ryegrass leaves grazed was negatively correlated with the difference between the surface height of the perennial ryegrass and white clover rows in spring. In both spring and summer, white clover leaves of the same extended leaf length had a higher proportion of them grazed than perennial ryegrass leaves.
In another experiment, during short grazing tests with perennial ryegrass–white clover swards that were grazed at the same sward surface height and at the same white clover content as in the previous experiment, there were no significant differences in the proportion of white clover and perennial ryegrass leaves grazed between strips of the two species and thoroughly mixed structures. The proportion of white clover leaves grazed was higher than that of perennial ryegrass leaves.
These results show that the differential defoliation by sheep of perennial ryegrass and white clover leaves varies according to their vertical distribution in the mixed canopy, but is little affected by their horizontal distribution. Even small differences in sward surface height between mixed perennial ryegrass and white clover can affect diet selection by sheep to a rather large extent.  相似文献

Herbage characteristics were studied over years 4–6 (1988–90) in three perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne L.) varieties as grass-only (200 kg N ha-1) and grass/clover ( Trifolium repens L.) swards which received 75kg N ha-1 in 1988 and 0kg N ha-1 in 1989 and 1990 when continuously stocked with sheep. Mean total annual herbage production of Aurora, a very early flowering variety, was 11% more than that of late-flowering Aberystwyth S23 due to 21% higher growth as grass/clover pasture. The grass/clover sward of Meltra, a tetraploid late-flowering variety, out-yielded S23/clover by 17%. Herbage production of grass/clover was 86% of that of grass only in 1988 but only 54% of the grass-only swards averaged for 1989 and 1990.
In vitro organic matter digestibility (OMD) of Meltra was 38g kg-1 OM and 27g kg-1 OM higher than that of S23 and Aurora respectively. OMD of grass/clover was 15g kg-1 OM higher than that of grass only during the post-weaning period. Herbage intake was positively correlated with OMD of herbage.
The herbage attributes were related to lamb performance reported previously. Lamb output was positively correlated with intake of digestible organic matter.
Differences between the three varieties in herbage characteristics were greater as grass/clover than as grass-only swards, reflecting their compatibility with white clover. In this respect Meltra was the best and S23 the poorest variety.  相似文献

The effect of the initial N-supplying capacity of soils (SoilN, 90–230 kg N ha–1 year–1) was tested on the dry-matter and N yields of pure or mixed white clover and perennial ryegrass swards, managed under simulated grazing over a 5-year period. The cumulated N harvested in the mixed swards was similar, both for white clover and perennial ryegrass, but the proportion of white clover showed oscillations over a 2-year period. In the first year, the SoilN effect was similar to that of fertilizer N. During the course of the experiment, the effect was always positive on the pure perennial ryegrass sward, alternately negative and nil for the white clover in the mixed sward and alternately positive and nil for the perennial ryegrass in the mixed sward; the period of these oscillations was 2 years. From the third regrowth period after sowing, the ratio between the actual N concentration and the concentration non-limiting to growth for the perennial ryegrass in the mixed sward, increased above that of the pure perennial ryegrass sward. It was in turn greater in the soils that were initially poor and then greater in those that were initially rich in soil N. The periodic oscillation of the initial SoilN effects implies that the initial SoilN gradient was alternately compensated and restored. It was concluded that N fluxes are partly responsible for the temporal oscillations in the proportion of white clover in mixed swards.  相似文献

The study was designed to test the hypothesis that grazing management in early season could alter sward structure to facilitate greater animal performance during critical periods. The effects of grazing a mixed perennial ryegrass/white clover sward at different sward surface heights, by cattle or sheep, in early season on sward composition and structure, and on the performance of weaned lambs when they subsequently grazed these swards in late season were determined. In two consecutive years, from mid‐May until mid‐July, replicate plots (three plots per treatment) were grazed by either suckler cows and calves or ewes and lambs at 4 or 8 cm sward surface heights (Phase 1). From mid‐August (Year 1) or early August (Year 2), weaned lambs continuously grazed, for a period of 36 d (Year 1) or 43 d (Year 2) (Phase 2), the same swards maintained at 4 cm (treatment 4–4), 8 cm (treatment 8–8) or swards which had been allowed to increase from 4 to 8 cm (treatment 4–8). Grazing by both cattle and sheep at a sward surface height of 4 cm compared with 8 cm in Phase 1 resulted in a higher (P < 0·001) number of vegetative grass tillers per m2 in Phase 2, although the effect was more pronounced after grazing by sheep. Sheep grazing at 8 cm in Phase 1 produced a higher number of reproductive tillers per m2 and a greater mass of reproductive stem (P < 0·001) than the other treatment combinations. The mass of white clover lamina was higher under cattle grazing (P < 0·05), especially on the 8‐cm treatment, and white clover accounted for a greater proportion of the herbage mass. These effects had mainly disappeared by the end of Phase 2. On the 4–4 and 8–8 sward height treatments the liveweight gain of the weaned lambs was higher (P < 0·05) on the swards previously grazed by cattle than those grazed by sheep. The proportion of white clover in the diet and the herbage intake also tended to be higher when the weaned lambs followed cattle. However, there was no difference in liveweight gain, proportion of white clover in the diet or herbage intake between swards previously grazed by cattle or sheep on the 4–8 sward height treatment. It is concluded that grazing grass/white clover swards by cattle compared with sheep for the first half of the grazing season resulted in less reproductive grass stem and a slightly higher white clover content in the sward, but these effects are transient and disappear from the sward by the end of the grazing season. They can also be eliminated by a short period of rest from grazing in mid‐season. Nevertheless these changes in sward structure can increase the performance of weaned lambs when they graze these swards in late season.  相似文献

Continuous stocking with sheep at high stocking rates may reduce the content of white clover (Trifolium repens) in mixed grass-clover swards. The present experiment was carried out to investigate the effects on sward production and composition of resting a perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne)- white clover sward from grazing and taking a cut for conservation. Swards were set-stocked with 25 and 45 yearling wethers ha?1 either throughout a grazing season, or on swards that were rested for a 6-week period and then cut in early, mid- or late season. In an additional treatment swards were cut only and not grazed. Net herbage accumulation was higher at the lower of the two stocking rates and was marginally increased by the inclusion of a rest period at the high but not the low stocking rate. Clover content was higher at the lower stocking rate and was increased by the inclusion of a rest period by 30% at 45 sheep ha?1and by 11% at 25 sheep ha?1 The effect was most marked at the end of the rest period before cutting. When rested from grazing the tiller density of ryegrass decreased although tiller length increased, and clover stolon length, petiole length and leaflet diameter increased though leaf and node number per unit length of stolon decreased; the reverse applied when the sward was returned to grazing after cutting. At the high stocking rate, rest periods in mid-season or later maintained the greatest clover content and marginally increased total net herbage accumulation. At the low stocking rate the timing of the rest period had no significant effect on total net herbage accumulation or on clover content. These results show that the combination of grazing and cutting is of benefit where the stocking rate is high enough to threaten clover survival and limit sheep performance. However, at such a stocking rate, feed reserves are at a minimum throughout the grazing season and so opportunities for resting the sward are probably low.  相似文献

The combined benefits of a high crude protein concentration, and possible protein protection and growth‐promoting properties, make forage legumes potentially attractive as a natural means of increasing liveweight gain and time to slaughter of lambs in lamb finishing systems. An experiment was conducted to compare the production performance and meat quality of grazing lambs finished on red clover (Trifolium pratense), lucerne (Medicago sativa) or perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) swards. Replicate (n = 2) swards of red clover, lucerne and perennial ryegrass were rotationally grazed by ten ram lambs and ten ewe lambs from weaning until selection for slaughter at UK fat class 3L. Lambs grazing the red clover sward had a significantly higher liveweight gain and required significantly fewer days to slaughter than lambs grazing the lucerne sward (305 g d?1 vs. 243 g d?1; 38 d vs. 50 d), which in turn had a higher liveweight gain and required fewer days to slaughter than lambs grazing the perennial ryegrass sward (184 g d?1; 66 d). Lambs grazing the red clover and lucerne swards had significantly higher herbage intakes than those grazing the perennial ryegrass sward (2·06, 1·72 and 1·16 kg DM d?1 respectively), but in vivo digestibility of herbage was similar. Lambs grazing the red clover and lucerne swards also had significantly higher serum urea concentrations than those grazing ryegrass (12·5, 11·1 and 6·2 mmol L?1 respectively). Killing‐out percentage was significantly higher for lambs grazing the red clover sward than for lambs grazing the perennial ryegrass sward (48% vs. 46%). There were no significant effects of finishing system on meat flavour, but meat from lambs finished on the lucerne sward was oxidatively less stable than that from lambs finished on the perennial ryegrass sward. Grazing the forage legume swards significantly increased the proportion of linoleic and linolenic acid in muscle tissue, and therefore the proportion of unsaturated to saturated fatty acids (0·19, 0·16 and 0·12 for the red clover, lucerne and perennial ryegrass swards respectively). However, the n?6/n?3 ratio was significantly lower for the muscle of lambs grazing the perennial ryegrass sward compared with those grazing the forage legume swards (1·13, 1·08 and 0·98 for the red clover, lucerne and perennial ryegrass swards respectively). The results indicate that by grazing lambs on forage legume swards it is possible to increase individual lamb performance without compromising meat quality.  相似文献

An experiment was carried out to examine the effect of supplementation on the performance of spring-calving dairy cows grazing swards of differing perennial ryegrass and white clover content. Seventeen heifers and sixty-four Friesian cows in their third to ninth week of lactation were turned out onto one of three pastures with different proportions of perennial ryegrass and white clover. Nine animals on each pasture received either 0, 2 or 4 kg d−1 of a concentrate with a crude protein concentration of 180 g kg−1 dry matter (DM). Prior to grazing, swards contained proportionately 0·01 (L), 0·15 (M) and 0·20 (H) of total DM as clover. During the experiment, grazing pressures were adjusted by movement of buffer fences to maintain compressed sward heights at 6 cm. Samples taken 26 and 68 d after the start of grazing showed little change in the proportion of clover in sward L (< 0·01 and 0·02 respectively), but convergence in the proportion of clover in swards M and L (0·08-0·16 and 0·10-0·15 respectively). Mean daily yields of milk, fat, protein and lactose increased significantly with increased clover content and, even without supplementation, daily yields were 25·4, 0·98, 0·73 and 1·09 kg respectively on sward H. Of the milk components, only protein was significantly increased by increasing sward clover content. The response in milk yield to supplementation was greater on sward L than on swards M and H.  相似文献

The effects of the imposition and timing of a rest period from continuous sheep stocking, for a conservation cut, on white clover presence in forty perennial ryegrass/white clover associations were studied over two full grazing seasons. Each association consisted of one grass variety along with one white clover variety, the grasses being diploid and tetraploid ryegrasses from each of five maturity groups and the white clovers from each of four leaf size categories. The presence of white clover within each association was assessed at the beginning and end of both seasons by means of a 0–64-m2 quadrat subdivided into 100 squares, each 80 mm × 80 mm, the number of squares in which any part of a white clover plant was visible being recorded. Complementary point quadrat data were also collected. Although continuous sheep stocking did not necessarily have an adverse effect on white clover presence, a July to mid-August rest period increased white clover proportions in the swards (means: unrested, 48–1; April to late May rest, 32.7; July to mid-August rest, 67.3 - s.e.d. 7.59; P < 0.05) the benefit increasing with increasing white clover leaf size. The early rest period (April to late May) reduced white clover presence and the late rest period (July to mid-August) increased white clover presence, these effects being intensified with increasing white clover leaf size (very large-leaved clover: unrested, 20.6; April to late May rest, 8.3; July to mid-August rest, 41.1 and small-leaved clover: unrested, 96.3; April to late May rest, 84.8; July to mid-August rest, 97 - s.e.d. 9.2; P <0001). Tetraploid ryegrass/white clover associations had consistently and significantly more white clover than diploid ryegrass/white clover associations of similar ryegrass maturity group (tetraploid, 53.4; diploid 44.8 - s.e.d. 2.12; P <0.001) and associations with early maturing ryegrass contained more white clover than those with late maturing ryegrasses, the effect of maturity group being greater than that of ploidy. Overall, white clover presence increased with increasing openness of grass growth habit.  相似文献
