Amyloid-producing odontogenic tumor in a Shih-Tzu dog

A 9-month-old male Shih-Tzu dog had a right mandibular tumor composed of strands, or nest-like proliferation of epithelial cells with abundant fibrous stroma characterized by spheroid to large nodular deposition of amyloid with Congo-red stain. Globule calcification was also seen throughout the tumor tissue and the spheroid depositions often had a concentrically laminated structure (Liesegang rings). The case was diagnosed as amyloid-producing odontogenic tumor in a dog.     

An unusual clinical presentation of a dog with gastrinoma

Gastrinoma is a rare malignant neuroendocrine neoplasia that results in autonomous gastrin secretion that stimulates hypersecretion of gastric acid, resulting in severe gastric and proximal small intestinal ulcerations. The principal clinical manifestation of gastrinoma is persistent vomiting. This report describes an uncommon manifestation of pancreatic gastrinoma in a dog.     

A clinical case of hypospodias in a dog

A 1-year-old intact male West Highland White Terrier was presented for abnormal miction. A clinical diagnosis of perineal type of hypospodias was established. Establishment of the diagnosis and the surgical management are discussed.     

A case of glomus tumor in a dog

A subcutaneous mass at the digit of the left-hind limb of a 12-year-old, male mongrel dog was examined. A white firm mass, approximately 1 x 2 cm in diameter, was excided surgically. Histopathologically, the mass formed multiple nodules consisting of mixed proliferation of round epithelioid cells arranged in cord or sheet-like structures and small spindle cells forming loose irregular bundles. The epithelioid cells often showed proliferation around the blood vessels. A few giant cells scattering in the neoplastic foci were observed. The neoplastic cells were positive for alpha-smooth muscle actin and vimentin, and were negative for cytokeratin (AE1/AE3), desmin, factor-VIII related antigen, S-100 protein, and neuron specific enolase. On the basis of these findings, this tumor was diagnosed as glomus tumor. Since the present neoplasm had neither recurrence nor distal metastasis during the 12 month after surgical resection, the biological natures of the present neoplasm are supposed to be benign.     

A rare case of odontogenic myxoma in a dog

A case of odontogenic myxoma in an old Doberman bitch involving the periodontal region of the mandible was recorded. Grossly, the tumour mass was soft and slimy, having brownish-black foci on cut surface. Histopathologically, the tumour predominantly consisted of mesenchyme-like cells with prominent nuclei and nucleoli. The tumour had abundant ground substance, rich in acid mucopolysaccharides.

A case of shaker dog disease in a miniature dachshund

A male miniature Dachshund, twenty-two months of age, was referred with paroxysmal generalized tremors as a main clinical sign. There were no abnormalities in the neurological examination except the lack of bilateral menace responses, and in the magnetic resonance imaging of its brain. Analysis of cerebro-spinal fluid revealed a slight rise in protein concentration and an increase in the number of cells. This case with brown hair was diagnosed as the shaker dog disease, which has also been well known as "little white shakers" syndrome due to being found in small dogs with white hair, because the clinical signs were exactly analogous to the shaker dog disease, and the generalized tremors disappeared on the first day after the administration of prednisolone and diazepam.
