Recirculating raceway systems were examined for their potential as a method for the intensive culture of the marine shrimp Penaeus vannamei Boone. The systems consisted of fiberglass raceways 38 m3 (13.7 m ± 2.4 m ± 1.16 m) and 28 m3 (13.7 m ± 2.4 m ± 0.85 m) each equipped with a vertical screen biofilter, foam fractionators and an ultraviolet ozone generator. All of the systems were enclosed in a commercial greenhouse. Four preliminary growout experiments and two growout experiments with stocking densities of 970 shrimp/m3 and 2,132 shrimp/m3 were completed.
Temperature, pH and salinity remained constant throughout the experiments. Unionized ammonia levels remained below 0.2 mg/L. Nitrite levels ranged from 0.1 to 1.0 mg/L. The 2,132/m2 stocking density resulted in 48% survival, food conversion ratio (FCR) of 1.8 and an average size of 10.8 g. The 970/m3 stocking density resulted in 82% survival, FCR of 2, and an average size of 14 g. Production was 11.4 kg/m3 (114 tons/ha) and 11.0 kg/m3 (110 tons/ha) for the high and low stocking densities, respectively.  相似文献

This present study was designed to investigate the effects of stocking density and water exchange on the growth rate, survival and performance index of L. setiferus postlarvae under controlled laboratory conditions. The experiment was done with postlarvae (PL10 to PL40) at densities of 50, 150, 250 and 350 shrimp/m2 and various different water exchanges rate per day (0, 6, 12 and 18%). The maximum growth rate was obtained for shrimp with 12% water exchange per day at all densities. A reduction of the maximum growth rate was observed in relation to density with the highest values in shrimp stocked in a density of 50 and 150 shrimp/m2 (mean value of 0.53 mg/d) and the lowest in shrimp stocked in a density of 350 shrimp/m2 (0.24 mg/d). The multiple regression equation obtained to relate performance index (growth rate* survival : PI), shrimp density (X1) and water exchange (X2) was: PI = 0.31 + (0.001) X1+ 0.039 X2+ 2.28 × 10−6 X12+ (−0.0017) X22+ (0.000026)X1X2, R 2= 0.78; P > 0.03. According to this equation the optimum shrimp density-water exchange comhination was between 5 to 12% of water exchange at stocking density of between 50 and 150 shrimp/m2. Salinity, ammonia-N and nitrite-N increased according to the time spent in tanks without water exchange. With no (0%) water exchange, water quality parameters measured were outside the optimum for L. setiferus postlarvae. The use of optimum density and water exchange in a nursery system for L. setiferus with optimum variables established is proposed.  相似文献

Abstract.— The effects of temperature on growth and protein assimilation in leader prawns Penaeus monodon were evaluated. Growth of leader prawns was significantly ( P < 0.05) affected by temperature. The highest growth rate was 0.124 g/d at 32.0 C and optimum growth occurred between 27.5–32.0 C. Growth was described by an equation of the form: W t = Woekt ( R2 = 0.99). The relationship between temperature and growth was described by a curvilinear equation of the form: Y = a + bX + cX2 ( R2 = 0.70). Apparent protein assimilation efficiency was not significantly ( P > 0.05) affected by temperature.  相似文献

Shrimp were grown under ideal management conditions during two distinct seasons of the year at stocking densities used most often in Honduras with the objective of evaluating the usefulness of high protein diets. A randomized design in 2 × 2 factorial arrangement was used to test a diet composed of either 20 or 40% crude protein in earthen ponds that were stocked with juvenile Penaeus vannamei at 5 to 11/m2. The study was repeated during wet and dry seasons. Dietary protein level had no significant effect ( P > O .05) on survival, yield, or average weight of shrimp at either density during either season. Higher stocking rates yielded significantly greater shrimp production during both seasons. Mean shrimp weight in high density ponds was significantly lower than mean shrimp weight in low density ponds during the wet season, but there was no significant weight difference because of stocking density during the dry season. Mean survival was significantly lower at the higher stocking rate during the dry season. Net income was negative during the dry season, particularly at the high stocking density. Mean production was 240% greater in the wet season than in the dry season. Diets offered P. vannamei stocked at 5 to 11/m2 should contain no more than 20% protein, regardless of season. Higher dietary protein levels increase costs and waste nitrogen without resulting in greater shrimp yields. The high stocking density might increase profitability in the wet season, but long term sustainable production may be more feasible at lower stocking rates because of reduced nutrient wastes.  相似文献

Intensive Culture Potential of Penaeus vannamei   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Tank and pond rearing studies were conducted to assess the potential for intensive culture of Penaeus vannamei in South Carolina. Postlarvae were stocked in intensive nursery tanks at 500/ m2. Growth and survival were compared for shrimp reared in control fiberglass tanks and in tanks with artificial substrates (fiberglass screen). Addition of substrate improved survival (82% versus 58%), but not growth. Juvenile shrimp (mean weight, 1.3 g) from the nursery trial were stocked into 6 m diameter tanks at densities of 10, 20 and 40/m2. Growth rate was inversely related to stocking density, with mean sizes of 33.9, 32.5, and 26.7 g attained at the low, medium, and high densities respectively after 168 days. At harvest, standing crop biomass averaged 225.6, 442.0, and 685.4 g/m2 for the three densities. To further test the intensive culture potential, two 0.1 ha ponds were stocked with hatchery-reared postlarvae at densities of approximately 40 and 45/m2. The ponds were managed intensively using paddlewheel aerators and water exchange averaging 16–17%/day. The ponds were harvested after 138 and 169 days and yielded 6,010 kg/ha of 16.7 g (mean weight) shrimp and 7,503 kg/ha of 17.9 g shrimp, respectively. Average production was 6,757 kg/ha with a food conversion of 2.51. These data suggest good potential for intensive pond culture of P. vannamei in South Carolina and other areas of the continental United States.  相似文献

Postlarvae of Litopenaeus vannamei were acclimated and stocked in lake-based cages at the following stocking densities: 10, 20, 30 and 40 shrimp m−2. Another set of shrimp was stocked in concrete tanks as reference samples at 30 shrimp m−2. Significant differences were observed among stocking densities throughout the 95-day culture. The final weight at harvest decreased with increasing stocking density: mean weights of 23.3, 15.8, 13.0, 10.9 and 14.6 g for the 10, 20, 30, 40 shrimp m−2 and reference tanks were observed respectively. There were no significant differences in survival throughout the culture period, ranging between 69% and 77%. Daily growth rates (range: 0.11–0.24 g day−1) and specific growth rates (range: 3.54–4.34%) also differed significantly among stocking densities, both increasing with decreasing stocking density. The feed conversion ratio in the cages did not differ among the stocking densities, ranging from 1.53 to 1.65. The relationship between stocking density and mean individual weight at harvest followed the equation y =81.06 x −0.54 ( R 2=0.938) and that of stocking density and production (in g m−2) is y =58.01 x −0.46 ( R 2=0.834).  相似文献

Abstract The geographic distribution of the Atlantic white shrimp Penaeus setiferus is in coastal waters from New York to Florida and around the Gulf of Mexico. Beside its value to commercial fisheries, this shrimp is sold as bait for recreational fishing. Previous data suggest that demand for live bait shrimp cannot be satisfied by commercial fleets. A 120-d trial was designed to study production of bait size P. setiferus at high densities in eight small outdoor ponds in south Texas. A 24–1 fractional factorial design was applied to study the effects of postlarval (PL) density (350 and 700 shrimp/m2), feed type (A and B), and water circulation methods (with and without airlift pumps or center pond dividers) on shrimp growth, survival and yield. No significant differences in survivals or yields were found between treatments (P = 0.2). Feed type ( P = 0.011), airlift pumps ( P = 0.021), and center dividers ( P = 0.026), had significant impacts on shrimp growth rates. Density effect on growth was not statistically significant ( P = 0.055). This study demonstrated that 6-d-old postlarvae can be stocked at 700 per square meter and reached a bait size (6.2 g) in 94 d with a 73.6% survival and a yield equivalent to 31,300 kg/ha when offered a commercial shrimp feed. A preliminary economic analysis based on this data suggests that operating a bait shrimp farm in Texas with two crops/yr will show profitability within 7 to 12 yr with an internal rate of return of 6.5 and 17.6%, respectively.  相似文献

A culture trial was performed using five levels of ascorbic acid 2-monophosphate (AmP at 0, 10, 100, 1000 and 2000 mg kg−1 diet, expressed as active ascorbic acid, AA) in a semipurified diet for early postlarval Penaeus vannamei. The experiment started 10 days after metamorphosis of the mysid larvae into postlarvae (=PL10). Each treatment was run in four replicates. P. vannamei postlarvae showed significantly better growth according to dietary AA level after 25 days of feeding, i.e. at PL36 stage. Whereas the dry weight of PL36 in the control treatment (0 mg AA kg−1 diet) was only 2 mg, supplementation of 1000 mg AA kg−1 increased the shrimp dry weight up to 18 mg. However, the growth in the other treatments was not significantly different from the control. Fitting a broken-line regression to the biomass yield demonstrated an optimal dietary level of 130 mg AA kg−1 diet. There were no differences observed among the treatments in stress resistance of postlarval P. vannamei to a salinity shock.  相似文献

Practical Molt Staging of Penaeus setiferus and Penaeus stylirostris   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Molt staging has many applications in penaeid aquaculture as a routine procedure. Using criteria developed for various crustaceans, a method of rapid molt staging was applied to Penaeus stylirostris and Penaeus setiferus adults. The most useful characters were the degree of epidermal retraction from the setal bases and epidermal retraction from the cuticle coupled with the development of new setae. The duration of the molt cycle of P. stylirostris was 11.5 ± 1.0 days ( N = 5) at 27–29 C. The early postmolt, late postmolt, intermolt, early premolt and late premolt stages were readily determined. For P. stylirostris , the duration of postmolt was 27% of the cycle; intermolt, 17%; and premolt, 56%. The length of the molt cycle of P. setiferus at 27–29 C was 13.6 ± 1.0 days ( N = 21) with postmolt occupying 22% of the cycle; intermolt, 19%; and premolt, 59%. Unilaterally eyestalk enucleated P. setiferus had a significantly shorter molt cycle than intact P. setiferus (11.7 ± 1.21 days vs. 13.6 ± 1.02 days, P < 0.05). There were no differences in molt cycle duration between the sexes, whether enucleated or intact ( P > 0.05). A series of illustrations identifies the key characteristics for determining stage of molt in these penaeids.  相似文献

A specially designed recirculating system was used to maintain P. vannamei broodstock for maturation, mating and spawning in the same tank. Two groups of different size shrimp were stocked in this system in Phase I (8 May to 5 September 1989) and Phase II (5 September to 5 December 1989). Results showed that this recirculating system was able to maintain good water quality keeping broodstock maturing, mating and spawning with high stocking density (10 shrimp/m2) and low mortality (6%). Seventy-eight percent of spawned eggs were collected by a submerged egg collector. Mating success was very poor (3.4%) in Phase I even though there was normal spawning frequency. Mating success and nauplii production were much improved in Phase II. During Phase II 104 male and female broodstock housed in a 6 m3 tank produced 1.6 ± 106 nauplii (with 70% mating success) in three months. This study illustrated that broodstock size was a critical factor of successful mating and fertilization for P. vunnamei , and also, reduction of handling stress and lowered disturbance of the shrimp greatly enhanced the mating success.  相似文献

Practical diets designed for penaeid shrimp are commonly supplemented with phosphorus, which may lead to unnecessary nutrient loading of the culture system and effluent waters as well as unnecessary investments in a nutrient that is not utilized by the culture species. To facilitate the optimization of phosphorus levels in practical shrimp feeds, research was conducted with Penaeus vannamei juveniles to determine the biological availability of two feed-grade calcium phosphate sources. A practical basal diet containing 350 g protein kg−1 diet and 9.8 g P kg−1 diet was formulated using anchovy and soybean meal as the primary protein and phosphorus sources. The basal diet was supplemented with graded levels of phosphorus and offered to juvenile shrimp (0.57 ± 0.017 g) over a 10-week period. Weight gain and estimated feed efficiency values increased with phosphorus supplements, indicating a dietary deficiency of the basal diet. Under the reported conditions, a dietary supplement of 1.4 or 2.3 g P kg−1 diet was required for maximum growth and estimated feed efficiency values if Cefkaphos (primarily monobasic calcium phosphate) or Dynafos (primarily dibasic calcium phosphate) was utilized. Dynafos was determined to have a relative biological value (RBV) of 63.8% of Cefkaphos based on final weights of the shrimp offered diets containing 1.25 g supplemental P kg−1 diet. A similar RBV of 60.9% was estimated based on broken-line analyses of growth data. There were no significant differences in apparent net phosphorus retention (ANPR) for the basal diet (23.1%) or diets supplemented with 1.25 g P kg−1 diet originating from Cefkaphos (25.7%) or Dynafos (17.9%). However, shifts in ANPR values of the diets corresponded to biological availability of the two phosphorus sources.  相似文献

Abstract.— A floating, double-net hatchery system for a red tilapia hybrid Oreochromis spp. was developed and tested in a eutrophic reservoir in West Java, Indonesia. Objectives of the studies were to test the effects of different male and female broodstock rotation times on fingerling production and compare production of the double-net system with other studies using a multiple regression model. Two experiments (EXP1 and EXP2) were conducted in four separate double-net hatchery systems comparing three broodstock rotation times over 12 spawning periods in EXP1 and 21 in EXP2. In both experiments, shorter broodstock rotation times (14–16 d in EXP1 or 10–15 d in EXP2) produced significantly ( P < 0.05) higher numbers of fingerlings (6.24 in EXP1 and 14.52 fingerlings/female per d in EXP2). A multiple regression model was developed to summarize results of six studies which included 31 spawning periods. A significant ( r2 = 0.651, P < 0.05) relationship was found between tilapia seed production in net hatcheries as the dependent variable and initial female broodstock densities (−), initial female body weight (−), female/male stocking ratio (−), and feed protein content (±) as independent variables.  相似文献

Pond water quality and associated microbial biomass were studied in relation to the type of feed applied during the culture of the marine shrimp Penaeus vannamei . The feeds tested included conventional feedlot manure as well as two feeds based on bagasse, a sugarcane waste product. Physical and chemical parameters were studied during a 100 day trial in 200 m2 earthen ponds. Both bagasse-based feeds supported a significantly larger microbial community as measured by specific biomass numbers ( P < 0.01), ATP content ( P < 0.001) and amount of the particulate organic matter present on pond bottoms ( P < 0.025). For both bagasse-based treatments, the estimated bacterial cell number in the flocculent layer was 3.11 ± 1012/m2, compared to the much lower cell number of 7.53 ± 1010/m2 for control ponds. Harvest data suggest that bagasse forms a potential base for feeds when applied to extensive shrimp cultures.  相似文献

Shipping trials were conducted with adult Penaeus setiferus to determine the effect of 24 hour closed shipments on water quality, to evaluate methods of reducing water quality deterioration and to maximize packing density (biomass). Other trials were undertaken with juvenile P. setiferus and adult P. vannamei for comparison. The method utilized 8 L seawater chilled to 18–19 C, inside doubled polyethylene bags held in a Styrofoam box (42 × 42 × 23 cm deep). Gaseous O2 was injected into the water to 8 ppm (for standardization) and into the space above the water. Super-saturation of dissolved oxygen (>20 ppm for 24 hours) had no adverse effect on survival. Initial trials resulted in increased ammonia (from 0.1 to 4–6 ppm NH4-N), increased carbon dioxide (from <2 to 80–100 ppm), increased temperature (from 18–19 to 25–26 C) and decreased pH (from 8.0 to 6.0–6.4). Increases in shipping density (number or biomass of shrimp per L seawater) further intensified water quality deterioration. Carbon dioxide (with concomitant pH decline) is implicated as the major limiting factor during 24 hour closed shipment. Ammonia accumulation was reduced or totally eliminated with addition of AmQuelΘ (Kordon, Inc, Hayward, California), 2 depending on the dosage used. The buffer, Trizma® 8.3 (Sigma Chemical Co, St. Louis, Missouri), 2 limited CO2 buildup and reduced pH decline. Maintenance of low temperature over 24 hours was enhanced with addition of a frozen cold pack placed over the shipping bags. However, the control of ammonia, pH and carbon dioxide by the addition of AmQuel and Trizma did not increase survival, possibly due to toxic effects of the chemicals.  相似文献

Abstract. Six groups of tropical freshwater catfish, Mystus nemurus (Cuvier & Valenciennes)(mean weight. 20·45 ± l·5g), were reared in 0·34m3 fibreglass tanks at different stocking densities (105, 195, 285, 375, 465 and 555 specimens/m3 water) for 84 days. The objective of the study was to determine the effect of various stocking densities on the growth, nutrition, biochemical composition and survival of M. nemurus. The lowest growth rate appeared in fish at the highest density and the highest was observed in fish stocked in moderate density of 285 and 375 fish/m3 water. Fish production was also lower at relatively low stocking densities of 105 and 195 fish/m3. Food conversion ratio (FCR), protein efficiency ratio (PER) and biochemical composition of M. nemurus indicate that there exists an optimum stocking density which lies between 285 and 375 fish/m3.  相似文献

A 34-day study was conducted to estimate the effect of stocking density on growth, biomass, and yield of harvestable animals in red swamp crawfish, Procambarus clarkii (Girard). Juvenile crawfish were stocked at l, 2, 4, 8, and 16 crawfish per m2 into plastic-lined metal pools planted with rice ( Oryza sativa ) with three replicate pools at each density. Crawfish averaged 35 ± 1.5 mm (SE) total length at the time of stocking.
Growth in total length and weight was significantly affected by density ( P < 0.01), ranging from 91.5 mm and 20.7 g for crawfish stocked at 1 per m2 to 62.5 mm and 6.3 g for crawfish stocked at 16 per m2. The total crawfish biomass ranged from 20.7 g per m2 for crawfish stocked at 1 per m2 to 88.7 g per m2 at 16 per m2. The portion of that biomass made up of harvestable sized animals (>75 mm total length) ranged from 100% at 1 per m2 to 0.7% at 16 per m2. Gross revenues per ha were projected for crawfish yields at each stocking density with and without a graded product.  相似文献

Nursery production may be enhanced by the addition of artificial substrate to increase the surface area upon which shrimp graze and to serve as refuge. The objective of this study was to assess the effects of the artificial substrate, AquaMatsTM, on the performance of postlarval Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei stocked at three densities. Eighteen 230-L tanks were stocked with 10-d postlarvae (mean weight < 0.01 g). Six treatments were evaluated and consisted of shrimp stocked at three densities (778 shrimp/m2, 1,167 shrimp/ m2, and 1,556 shrimp/m2) with and without access to artificial substrate. Shrimp in all treatments received a commercial diet ad libitum . After 6 wk, shrimp were harvested from each nursery tank, counted, and batch weighed. Mean final weight, survival, production, feed conversion ratio, and water quality parameters were analyzed by 2-way ANOVA. There were highly significant ( P < 0.001) density and substrate effects on final weight, but there was no significant interaction effect. Final weight was 26.0, 17.4, and 34.5% greater in treatments with substrate than without substrate when stocked at 778, 1,167, and 1,556 shrimp/m2, respectively. There was no significant density, substrate, or interaction effect on survival or water quality. Mean survival was ± 89.1% for all treatments. Increased shrimp growth in the presence of added substrate was likely due to the availability of attached particulate organic matter on the AquaMatsTM that served as an additional food source. Results from this study indicate that artificial substrate can be used to mitigate the potential negative effects of high stocking density on growth of L. vannamei in nursery systems.  相似文献

Reproductive performance was evaluated for sexually mature male Penueus vannamei fed one of four diets: 1) commercial 40% protein shrimp growout diet; 2) 100% squid; 3) 50% squid, 25% bloodworms and 25% Artemia; and 4) starvation. Spermatophores were ejaculated manually from tagged males at stocking and every 12 d thereafter. For each half of the compound spermatophore, weight and sperm count were determined. Four methods were used to assay the sperm quality: 1) gross morphology (GM); 2) trypan blue stain (TB); 3) acridine orange stain (AO); and 4) egg water induced reaction (EW). The reaction induced when P. vannamei sperm are exposed to conspecific egg water is grossly similar to that observed in vivo at the surface of the freshly spawned eggs from naturally mated females. Little correlation was found between spermatophore weight and sperm count. The best correlation was found between GM and AO (r2= 0.859, P < 0.01). Many morphologically abnormal sperm did not stain with TB. For most of the spermatophores evaluated; over 80% of the sperm were morphologically normal, were unstained with TB, and were immediately fluorescing light green when stained with AO. When exposed to egg water, sperm from these apparently good quality spermatophores yielded mixed results. The analysis of dietary effects on spermatophore quality were equivocal. Although a significant decline in body weight, spermatophore weight, and sperm count were observed in the starvation treatment as compared to maturation and squid diets, no significant differences were observed in MY of the sperm quality assays.  相似文献

Three isolated marine diatoms ( Amphora , Navicula and Cymbella ) grown on substrate were evaluated as feed supplement for Penaeus monodon postlarvae (PL) in hatchery system for a period of 19 days without changing water. Specific growth rate (day−1) (0.27 ± 0.0) and survival (%) (56.3 ± 1.8) of PLs were significantly higher ( P  < 0.05) in treatment tanks when compared with the control (0.20 ± 0.0; 36.0 ± 1.5, respectively). Shrimp PLs reared in substrate-based tanks had significantly higher ( P  < 0.05) levels of protein, lipid (521.0 ± 7.0; 304.0 ± 2 g kg−1 dry weight, respectively), ecosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) (189.0 ± 2.0; 176.0 ± 2 g kg−1 of total fatty acid, respectively) than the control (435.0 ± 22.0; 258.0 ± 22 g kg−1 dry weight; 172.0 ± 5.0; 152 ± 2 g kg−1 total fatty acid, respectively). The periphytic diatoms contained protein and lipid (430–490; 230–260 g kg−1 dry weight, respectively), EPA (30–150 g kg−1 of total fatty acids), DHA (20–30 g kg−1 of total fatty acids) and nine essential amino acids. The results showed that isolated marine periphytic diatoms grown on substrate could be used as feed supplement in enhancing the growth and survival of P. monodon postlarvae.  相似文献
