Background, aim, and scope

The rapid growth of the world’s population over the past few decades has led to a concentration of people, buildings, and infrastructure in urban areas. The tendency of urban areas to develop in sedimentary valleys has increased their vulnerability to earthquakes due to the presence of soft soil and sediment. Several earthquakes have clearly demonstrated that local soil and sediment conditions can have a significant influence on earthquake-induced ground motion and damage pattern, respectively. Many studies confirm the relationship between site effect and ground motion (Borcherdt in Bull Seismol Soc Am 60:29–61, 1970; Bouckovalas et al. in Geotech Geolog Eng (Historical Archive) 14(2):111–128, 1996; Fäh et al. in Seismology 1:87–10, 1997; Atakan et al. in Nat Hazards 15(2–3):139–164, 1997; Christaras et al. in Geodynamics 26(2–4):393–411, 1998; Raptakis et al. in Bull Earthquake Eng 2(3):285–301, 2004a; Raptakis et al. in Soil Dyn Earthq Eng 25:871–887, 2005; Marka et al. in Pure Appl Geophys 158:2349–2367, 2001; Marka et al. in Soil Dyn Earthq Eng 25(4):303–315, 2005; Importa et al. in Seismology 9(2):191–210, 2005; Tyagunov et al. in Nat Hazards 38:199–214, 2006; Lombardo et al. in Nat Hazards 38:339–354, 2006; Rayhani et al. in Geotech Geol Eng 21(1):91–100, 2008). In order to classify the suitability of the soil and subsurface sediment units for urban planning and compare their mechanical behavior with the non-uniform damage observed in the 2003 earthquake, we performed some geotechnical and geophysical analyses of soil and sediment samples collected from different locations in Bam City.

Methodology

Geophysical and geotechnical properties, such as grain size distribution, sorting, plasticity, Poison’s ratio, shear strength, compression index, permeability, and P and S wave velocities in soil and subsurface sediments, were measured. Maps (in GIS environment) and cross-sections were prepared for the study area.

Results

According to our observations, a great number of buildings were damaged in areas of the city where silty and clayey soils dominate, presenting very low permeability, low wave velocity together with high plasticity, and compressibility. In the study area, we recognized eight sediment types. Shear wave propagation velocities allowed for the identification of four seismic layers referred to as the surface layer, second layer, and third layer and seismic bedrock. We found that the damages observed in the Bam area were related to the physical and mechanical properties of the soil and subsurface sediment units. We also found that the soil thickness that was estimated by geophysical surveying shows a direct relationship with damage rate observations. Furthermore, we observed that landslide and qanat collapses have occurred in some areas where sand and silty sand soils and subsurface sediments dominate.

Discussion

The distribution of the damage shows a microzonation that is very serious in some points in the city along the main fault, especially where it is located on thick, fine, medium, and loose soil and sediments. In general, there is a discernable west to east increase in the damage across the city. The average level of destruction for the entire city was ~75%, while the eastern part of the city locally reached 100% destruction level. The major factors that influenced the damage and destruction in the Bam region were the distance of a given site from the seismic source, the quality of foundation soil and subsurface sediment, and the type of building. The Bam earthquake occurred on a single fault network comprising the Bam and Arg-e-Bam faults (Funning et al. in J Geophys Res 100(B09406):1–23, 2005). The sediments and soil of the area (unconsolidated silty sand and sandy gravel) belong to braided fluvial and alluvial facies. Most of the buildings near the epicenter area were old and constructed of mud bricks using mud cement.

Recommendations and perspectives

A combined sedimentological, geological, neotectonic, geotechnical, paleoseismological, and geophysical investigation in urban areas (especially in alluvial valleys) will give the detailed knowledge of the subsurface structure required for the accurate and precise seismic hazard assessments needed for effective earthquake protection planning. This paper shows that for the Bam situation, sedimentological data are required to provide an interpretive context for the geophysical data.  相似文献

The review deals with three books focused on two questions dealing with a single problem: how human cultures and crop cultures are interrelated? The two questions dealt with are: Is there a conflict between the evolution of cultivated plants and the present trend of our cultural (including social, economical, ideological or political) evolution? If yes, what can be done to diminish this conflict? The three books focused on these questions deal with (1) growing number of endangered crops on global scale (Khoshbakht and Hammer, Threatened Crop Species Diversity. Shahid Beheshti University Press, Teheran 2010), (2) massive erosion of locally and regionally important crop varieties and associated traditional knowledge followed by collapse of whole agroecosystems and landscapes on a country scale (Antofie, A red list of crop plant varieties for Romania—Lista rosie a varietatilor plantelor de cultura din Romania. Many of the environmental problems related to agriculture will still be serious over the next 30?years. However, the seriousness of some of those problems may increase more slowly than in the past or even diminish in other cases (FAO 2002). Agriculture plays two different roles in climate change; on one hand, it suffers from the impact of climate change, on the other hand, it is responsible for 14?% of total greenhouse gases (MMA 2008). Nevertheless, agriculture is also part of the solution, as it is capable of mitigating a significant amount of global emissions, according to the FAO (2001). This paper aims to study the influence of edapho-climate conditions on soil CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. In order to do so, we conducted three field trials in different areas in southern Spain, which have different soil textures and different climate conditions. The results show how interaction between the temperature and rainfall recorded has a greater influence on emissions than each of the factors separately. However, at the same time, the texture of the soil at each of the locations was also found to be the most dominant variable in the gas emission process.  相似文献

Both existing models for non-symmetric distributions on 3-dimensional rotations and their associated one-sample inference methods have serious limitations in terms of both interpretability and ease of use. Based on the intuitively appealing Uniform Axis- Random Spin (UARS) construction of Bingham, Nordman, and Vardeman (2009) for symmetric families of distributions, we propose new highly interpretable and tractable classes of non-symmetric distributions that are derived from mixing UARS distributions. These have an appealing Preferred Axis-Random Spin (PARS) construction and (unlike existing models) directly interpretable parameters. Non-informative one-sample Bayes inference in these models is a direct generalization of UARS methods introduced in Bingham, Vardeman, and Nordman (2009), where credible levels were found to be essentially equivalent to frequentist coverage probabilities. We apply the new models and inference methods to a problem in biomechanics, where comparison of model parameters provides meaningful comparisons for the nature of movement about the calcaneocuboid joint of three different primate subjects.  相似文献

Purpose

Within the regulatory framework for authorisation of plant protection products (PPPs) (EU Directive 91/414/1991/EEC replaced by Regulation (EC) 1107/2009), higher tier risk assessments and earthworm field tests are conducted in different countries across Europe. This paper describes dominant earthworm species for regulatory and biogeographical regions in agricultural landscapes across Europe and examines regional differences in earthworm communities and densities and their respective response to a toxic reference.

Materials and methods

For the assessment of earthworm abundance and species distribution, data of untreated control plots from 30 earthworm field studies were analysed; each conducted according to the ISO 11268–3 (1999) guideline by European Crop Protection Association member companies in the context of registration of PPPs. For the evaluation of the response to PPPs under different regional and climatic conditions, the effect on earthworm abundance was assessed by comparing plots treated with toxic references with untreated control plots. Additionally, a comparative literature review was included providing an overview of earthworm species composition and densities in agricultural crops from 14 European countries.

Results and discussion

The assessment of earthworm field studies from six different European countries revealed that common earthworm species of anecic and endogeic ecological groups are present at most field sites. Dominant species groups of endogeic and anecic earthworms can be defined that are abundant in all assessed countries. These are the endogeic species Aporrectodea caliginosa, Aporrectodea rosea and Allolobophora chlorotica, and the anecic species Lumbricus terrestris (Northern and Central Europe) and Lumbricus friendi (Southern Europe). Taking into account the high variability in total earthworm abundances, it can be concluded that the variability within regions was larger than the variability between regions.

Conclusions

Analysis of the earthworm community and data of toxic references lead to the conclusion that testing in different zones is not considered necessary.  相似文献

In the past, phenotypic resemblances between three species and natural hybrids belonging to the genus Artocarpus were a source of confusion between individuals belonging to these taxons. Now, results of amplified fragment length polymorphism analysis and morphological data concerning a great diversity of breadfruit are being published. We have considered historical data about the naturalization of breadfruit in the Caribbean, the number of seed per fruit in the seeded breadfruit cultivated in the Caribbean, and scientific knowledge about breadfruit published today. We have established that the seeded breadfruit grown in the Caribbean is in fact Artocarpus camansi Blanco (1837), recognized as a seeded wild ancestor of the domesticated breadfruit, and not a seeded variety of Artocarpus altilis [synonym Artocarpus incisa] as established by Duss (1897), still often referred to by modern authors.  相似文献

Purpose

The aluminium smelter located in the northern coast of Galicia (NW Spain) is a source of fluoride pollution. Previous papers Gago et al. (Commun Soil Sci Plant Anal 32:2503–2517, 2001, Fluoride 35:110–121, 2002) have identified an area of 3-km radius around the factory being affected by fluoride emissions. This study aims to investigate the influence of fluoride emissions on fluorine concentration and speciation as well as on aluminium speciation in soils in the vicinity of the smelter.

Materials and methods

PVC cylinders containing soil material from the A horizon of an unpolluted forest soil, similar to that in the vicinity of the factory, were placed within the A horizon of soils surrounding the smelter. The cylinders were placed at various distances (up to 3 km) from the factory in the direction of predominant winds. The PVC columns were removed after 6 months, and the soil material inside was divided into two slices (0–10 and 10–20 cm) and analysed for pH, total and available fluorine, exchangeable cations, effective cation exchange capacity (CEC) and oxalate-extracted aluminium. The soil solution was mimicked by aqueous extracts and analysed for pH, electrical conductivity, Ca, Mg, Na, K, total and free fluorine, total Al, acid-soluble Al, non-labile Al, labile Al and labile Al species.

Results and discussion

In the area closest to the factory (0.5 km), total and available fluorine in the upmost 10 cm soil increased by twofold and eightfold, respectively, while soluble fluoride increased by fourfold. Increases were also observed in exchangeable Ca, Mg, Al and CEC. Noncrystalline Al increased significantly at any distance from the smelter. Fluorine, pH, sulphate, aluminium and organic matter increased in the soil solution of surface (<10 cm) samples closest to the factory. Monomeric Al-organic matter complexes prevailed in the liquid phase at 0.5–1 km from the factory whereas inorganic Al complexes did at distances over 1 km. Among the inorganic Al complexes, fluoride complexes prevailed at distances less than 1 km and hydroxylated complexes at distances greater than 1 km. Al3+ concentration was always very low.

Conclusions

Emissions from an aluminium smelter led to increased concentrations of fluorine and various forms of aluminium in the nearby soil. These emissions mobilised aluminium, organic matter and probably sulphate from the soil. In the closest neighbourhood of the smelter, it was found that most soluble aluminium was bound to organic matter, hence having low toxicity, while at distances farther than 1 km Al-F and Al-OH complexes prevailed.  相似文献

There are two key types of selection in a plant breeding program, namely selection of hybrids for potential commercial use and the selection of parents for use in future breeding. Oakey et al. (in Theoretical and Applied Genetics 113, 809–819, 2006) showed how both of these aims could be achieved using pedigree information in a mixed model analysis in order to partition genetic effects into additive and non-additive effects. Their approach was developed for field trial data subject to spatial variation. In this paper we extend the approach for data from trials subject to interplot competition. We show how the approach may be used to obtain predictions of pure stand additive and non-additive effects. We develop the methodology in the context of a single field trial using an example from an Australian sorghum breeding program.  相似文献

The canopy budget model simulates the interaction of major ions within forest canopies based on throughfall and precipitation measurements. The model has been used for estimating dry deposition and canopy exchange fluxes in a wide range of forest ecosystems, but different approaches have been reported. We give an overview of model variations with respect to the time step, type of open-field precipitation data, and tracer ion, and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of different assumptions on ion exchange within forest canopies. To examine the effect of model assumptions on the calculated fluxes, nine approaches were applied to data from two deciduous forest plots located in regions with contrasting atmospheric deposition, i.e. a beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) plot in Belgium and a mixed sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.) plot in Quebec. For both forest plots, a semi-annual time step in the model gave similar results as an annual time step. Na+ was found to be more suitable as a tracer ion in the filtering approach than Cl? or ${\text{SO}}_4^{2 - } $ . Using bulk instead of wet-only precipitation underestimated the potentially acidifying deposition. To compute canopy uptake of ${\text{NH}}_4^ + $ and H+, ion exchange with K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ as well as simultaneous cation and anion leaching should be considered. Different equations to allocate ${\text{NH}}_4^ + $ vs H+ uptake had most effect on the estimated fluxes of the cation that was less important at a plot. More research is needed on the relative uptake efficiency of H+, ${\text{NH}}_4^ + $ , and ${\text{NO}}_{_3 }^{\text{ - }} $ for varying tree species and environmental conditions.  相似文献

Field study at the Cervenohorske sedlo (1,013 m a.s.l.) (Hruby Jesenik Mountains, the Czech Republic, Central Europe) during 1999–2002 has been conducted in order to analyse the chemistry of rain/snow water using bulk and throughfall collector and fog/cloud water using modified passive Grunow collector. Fog water input to coniferous forest (Picea abies) was quantified using canopy balance method. For all samples pH, and the concentrations of $ {\text{NH}}^{{\text{ + }}}_{{\text{4}}} $ , Ca2+, K+, Mg2+, Na+, Cl?, $ {\text{NO}}^{{\text{ - }}}_{{\text{3}}} $ , and $ {\text{SO}}^{{{\text{2 - }}}}_{{\text{4}}} $ were measured. The volume-weighted mean pH value varied from 4.92 to 5.43 in open bulk precipitation, from 4.30 to 4.71 in throughfall and from 4.66 to 5.23 in fog water. The fog droplets generally contain higher ion concentrations than rainwater. The related enrichment factors lie between 1.1 and 10.7 for the relevant species. The fog samples exhibit higher concentrations of $ {\text{NO}}^{{\text{ - }}}_{{\text{3}}} $ and $ {\text{NH}}^{{\text{ + }}}_{{\text{4}}} $ as compared to the bulk samples during 2000–2002. $ {\text{NO}}^{{\text{ - }}}_{{\text{3}}} $ are 5.7–10.7 times more concentrated in fog water and $ {\text{NH}}^{{\text{ + }}}_{{\text{4}}} $ are 3.4–7.2 times more concentrated in fog water. These differences may result from the height and characteristics of formation of the droplets. Based on canopy balance method, the annual fog water inputs were estimated to be 22 and 19% of rain and snow annual amounts in 1999 and 2000, respectively. For $ {\text{NO}}^{{\text{ - }}}_{{\text{3}}} $ , $ {\text{NH}}^{{\text{ + }}}_{{\text{4}}} $ , and $ {\text{SO}}^{{{\text{2 - }}}}_{{\text{4}}} $ , the contribution of fog deposition in total (bulk + fog) deposition is estimated as 54, 47, and 42%, respectively.  相似文献

Lake 223 in the Experimental Lakes Area, northwestern Ontario was experimentally-acidified with H2SO4 from 1976 to the present. Cladocerans increased in absolute and relative abundance and in total biomass when the pH of Lake 223 was lowered from 6.7 to 5.1. Comparing the cladoceran community at pH 6.7 (1974) with that at pH 5.1 (1981 to 1983), Daphnia galeata mendotae disappeared, Diaphanosoma birgei became rare, Holopedium gibberum increased in abundance and Daphnia catawba, recorded for the first time in 1980, became abundant. Bosmina longirostris became more abundant. Except for the decline in D. birgei, the changes in cladoceran species composition with acidification are consistent with known responses of these species to low pH. The increase in importance of cladocerans in 1981 to 1983 was at the expense of copepods. It was hypothesized to be caused by the decline in predation by small fish during 1981 to 1983 as acidification reduced minnow populations and inhibited reproduction in trout and sucker. The loss of the population of the invertebrate predator, the opposum shrimp, Mysis relicta, in 1979 had little effect on cladoceran biomass.  相似文献

A constructed wetland composed of a pond- and a marsh-type wetland was employed to remove nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) from effluent of a secondary wastewater treatment plant in Korea. Nutrient concentrations in inflow water and outflow water were monitored around 50 times over a 1-year period. To simulate N and P dynamics in a pond- and a marsh-type wetland, mesocosm experiments were conducted. In the field monitoring, ammonium (NH 4 + ) decreased from 4.6 to 1.7 mg L?1, nitrate (NO 3 ? ) decreased from 6.8 to 5.3 mg L?1, total N (TN) decreased from 14.6 to 10.1 mg L?1, and total P (TP) decreased from 1.6 to 1.1 mg L?1. Average removal efficiencies (loading basis) for NO 3 ? , NH 4 + , TN, and TP were over 70%. Of the environmental variables we considered, water temperature exhibited significant positive correlations with removal rates for the nutrients except for NH 4 + . Results from mesocosm experiments indicated that NH 4 + was removed similarly in both pond- and marsh-type mesocosms within 1 day, but that NO 3 ? was removed more efficiently in marsh-type mesocosms, which required a longer retention time (2?C4 days). Phosphorus was significantly removed similarly in both pond- and marsh-type mesocosms within 1 day. Based on the results, we infer that wetland system composed of a pond- and a marsh-type wetland consecutively can enhance nutrient removal efficiency compared with mono-type wetland. The reason is that removal of NH 4 + and P can be maximized in the pond while NO 3 ? requiring longer retention time can be removed through both pond and marsh. Overall results of this study suggest that a constructed wetland composed of a pond- and a marsh-type wetland is highly effective for the removal of N and P from effluents of a secondary wastewater treatment plant.  相似文献

Forest ecosystems are being subjected to an increasing variety of stresses for which we do not yet have rotation-length experience. Where we lack such experience, we cannot make experience-based predictions of the long-term effects of these stresses. While we are accumulating such experience, computer models can be used to make interim knowledge-based predictions. Most scientific knowledge has been produced by reductionist; disciplinary, process-based research. Such knowledge is a vital component of any explanation of natural or human-induced landscape phenomena, but cannot, in its reductionist, disciplinary form, provide an adequate basis on its own for long-term predictions about these phenomena. Such predictions require the development of computer models of ecosystem form and function based on the integration of knowledge from eco-physiology, autecology, community ecology, soil science, and climatology into ecosystem-level models that accurately describe the function and temporal dynamics of forest ecosystems.The ability of the ecosystem-level forest management simulation model FORCYTE-11 (FORest nutrient Cycling and Yield Trend Evaluator) to simulate forest stresses is described briefly. The question of how to model other stresses, such as air pollution, acid rain, climate change, soil compaction and erosion, and moisture competition is discussed, and the outline of a new model (FORECAST: FORestry and Environmental Change ASsessmenT) is presented.  相似文献

Survey data from approximately 2,900 Ontario lakes were used to examine the distribution of 12 fish species with respect to lake pH. Yellow perch (Perca flavescens), white sucker (Catostomus commersoni), brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis), pumpkinseed (Lepomis gibbosus), fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) and redbelly dace (Phoxinus eos) proved to be tolerant of low pH (pH <6.4). Lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush), common shiner (Notropis cornutus), blacknose shiner (Notropis heterolepis), lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis), walleye (Stizostedion vitreum vitreum) and northern pike (Esox lucius) showed limited distribution in low pH lakes (pH <6.4). The limited distribution of lake whitefish and northern pike likely relates to zoogeographic factors rather than their intolerance to low pH. Lake trout and common shiner occur in lakes susceptible to, and receiving high loadings of acidic deposition. However, without historical data, we cannot determine if their decreased distribution in low pH systems is due to intolerance to low pH.  相似文献

A long-term hydrological and water chemistry research was conducted in three experimental microbasins differing in land cover: (1) a purely agricultural fertilized microbasin, (2) a forested microbasin dominated by Carpinus betulus (European hornbeam), and (3) a forested microbasin dominated by Picea abies (L.) (Norway spruce). The dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN: NH 4 + , NO 2 ? , NO 3 ? ) budget was examined for a period of 3 years (1991–1993). Mean annual loads of DIN along with sulfate SO 4 2? and base cations Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, and HCO 3 ? were calculated from ion concentrations measured in stream water, open-area rainfall, throughfall (under tree canopy), and streamwater at the outlets from the microbasins. Comparison of the net imported/exported loads showed that the amount of NO 3 ? leached from the agricultural microbasin is ~3.7 times higher (43.57 kg ha?1?a?1) than that from the spruce dominated microbasin (11.86 kg ha?1?a?1), which is a markedly higher export of NO 3 ? compared to the hornbeam dominated site. Our analyses showed that land cover (tree species) and land use practices (fertilization in agriculture) may actively affect the retention and export of nutrients from the microbasins, and have a pronounce impact on the quality of streamwater. Sulfate export exceeded atmospheric rainfall inputs (measured as wet deposition) in all three microbasins, suggesting an additional dry depositions of SO 4 2? and geologic weathering.  相似文献

Covariance structure modeling plays a key role in the spatial data analysis. Various parametric models have been developed to accommodate the idiosyncratic features of a given dataset. However, the parametric models may impose unjustified restrictions to the covariance structure and the procedure of choosing a specific model is often ad hoc. To avoid the choice of parametric forms, we propose a nonparametric covariance estimator for the spatial data, as well as its extension to the spatio-temporal data based on the class of space-time covariance models developed by Gneiting (J. Am. Stat. Assoc. 97:590–600, 2002). Our estimator is obtained via a nonparametric approximation of completely monotone functions. It is easy to implement and our simulation shows it outperforms the parametric models when there is no clear information on model specification. Two real datasets are analyzed to illustrate our approach and provide further comparison between the nonparametric estimator and parametric models.  相似文献
