Individual variability in dispersal strategies, where some individuals disperse and others remain resident, is a common phenomenon across many species. Despite its important ecological consequences, the mechanisms and individual consequences of dispersal remain poorly understood. Here, riverine Northern pike (Esox lucius) juveniles (age 0+ (young-of-the-year) and 1+ years) were used to investigate the influence of body size and trophic position (at capture) on the dispersal from off-channel natal habitats and the subsequent consequences for body sizes, specific growth rate and trophic position (at recapture). Individuals that dispersed into the river (“dispersers”) were not significantly different in body size than those remaining on nursery grounds (“stayers”). For trophic position, 0+ dispersers were of significantly lower trophic position than stayers, but with this not apparent in the 1+ fish. Following dispersal into the river, the dispersers grew significantly faster than stayers and, on recapture, were significantly larger, but with no significant differences in their final trophic positions. Early dispersal into the river was, therefore, not associated with early dietary shifts to piscivory and the attainment of larger body sizes of individuals whilst in their natal habitats, contrary to prediction. These results suggest that despite an increasing risk of mortality for individuals dispersing early from natal areas, there are long-term benefits via elevated growth rates and, potentially, higher fitness. Such early dispersal behaviour could be driven by early competitive displacement. 相似文献

Abstract – The movement of ten radio-tagged adult pikes (57–113 cm) in the River Gudenå, Denmark, was investigated from September 1998 to September 1999. The movements of pike were characterised by long resident periods in the submergent vegetation, interrupted by short excursions to nearby areas. Two periods with more intense movement were observed; one period during early winter; and one period during spring from mid-March to mid-May. The increased movement during early winter may have been initiated by a slight temperature increase at this time, whereas the increased movement during spring coincided with the spawning of pike. Despite suitable spawning areas nearby the areas where pike resided most of the year, several pike, mainly females, migrated to distant localities during spring. 相似文献

Northern pike, Esox lucius, needs different habitats to survive and reproduce and thus depends on the availability and accessibility of these habitats. To efficiently manage pike, information is needed on its spatial and temporal patterns of migration. In this study, we investigated the occurrence of adult pike migration and which environmental variables influenced migration. From December 2010, we followed 15 pike for 1 year by use of radio telemetry in the River Yser, a typical lowland river characterised by anthropogenic impacts such as artificial embankments. Pike migrated most in February and March, which could indicate they frequented spawning habitat in this period. Four environmental variables significantly affected pike migration, ranging from the location where pike were observed (strongest effect), over water temperature and flow to diel water temperature change (weakest effect). The relation between migration and the location where pike were observed could demonstrate that pike preferred specific regions in the river. Increasing water temperature triggered migration for both sexes, and males started migrating at lower temperatures than females, which suggests that males start migrating earlier. This was the only substantial difference observed between male and female pike migration. The results suggest that migration was inhibited by high flow, as no migration was observed at high flow. River managers can use this information to efficiently manage their pike populations, for example, by removing or temporarily opening hydraulic structures like valves, weirs and sluices. This may facilitate access to suitable habitats at moments pike needs these habitats to fulfil its life cycle. 相似文献

Abstract – Pike from two different waters were radio-tagged and released immediately upon recovery. In Bygholm Reservoir 19 pike (52–72 cm) and in Lake Ring 15 pike (53–77 cm) were tagged in late February and early March. Bygholm (58 ha) is a shallow eutrophic reservoir and Ring (22 ha) is a natural mesotrophic lake. The positions of the tagged fish were recorded through weekly trackings and a number of 3-day tracking sessions during a 9-month period. Diel activity patterns, home range sizes and habitat utilization by pike was compared between the reservoir and the lake. The pike in the lake occupied larger areas than the pike in the reservoir and were less associated with vegetation. In both waters pike were found more often in, or close to, vegetation during summer than during winter. No difference in average movement of pike was seen between the waters, but pike were more stationary in the reservoir than in the lake. There was no difference in the level of movement between different times of the day, but the diel rhythm of the pike changed significantly over the year. There were large behavioral differences between pike in the lake and in the reservoir and even more variation between individuals within each population. 相似文献

Abstract Between 1994 and 1997, 508 pike, Esox lucius L., were tagged in Lower Lough Erne (LLE), Northern Ireland. By August 2000, 79 of these fish were recaptured. Ten of 27 pike recaptured and released a second time were then captured a third time. Distance from tagging to recapture site ranged from 0 to 16 km, with most recaptures within 10 km. Pike dispersed widely after spawning, an observation supported by netting survey data, and tended to return to the same spawning sites year after year. The usefulness of designated sanctuary areas free of commercial fishing, intended to maintain a stock of pike reserved for angling was evaluated. To protect angling stocks of pike from commercial fishing, sanctuary areas should be somewhat larger than at present. 相似文献

Understanding the spatial ecology of juvenile freshwater fish beyond summer months is an essential component of their life history puzzle. To this end, declines in the natural populations of sympatric Muskellunge (Esox masquinongy) and Northern Pike (Esox lucius) in the upper St. Lawrence River prompted study of spatiotemporal patterns and habitat requirements associated with earlier life stages of these congeneric, freshwater predators in fall and overwinter periods. Over 75 age-0 esocids were tagged and passively monitored using acoustic telemetry in four nursery embayments in fall and winter months from 2015 and 2017 months to elucidate spatiotemporal ecology and test hypotheses related to emigration. Presence, residency, space and habitat use were assessed and modelled against key environmental (i.e. water temperature and level) and biological (total length) covariates using mixed effect models. Muskellunge were found to spend more time in deeper, littoral regions with canopy-forming, submerged aquatic vegetation while Northern Pike aggregated in the deepest, highly vegetated region of their nursery embayment. Results suggest fish may exhibit transitionary movements in fall months and may span outwards into nearshore regions along the main river channel. Studies informing coastal restoration initiatives to increase Muskellunge production are encouraged to assess sympatric habitat use relative to prominent embayment structures and further explore depth partitioning by these young predators. With a substantial influence from water-level regulation on use of nursery habitat, future studies must work in concert with management plans aimed at producing more natural riverine cycles and thus increased recruitment of Esox species. 相似文献

Understanding how released fish recover following capture is vital information for researchers examining the effects of angling on exploited populations. This information is virtually non‐existent for fish angled through the ice in winter, despite the popularity of ice‐angling in many northern areas. To address this gap, 60 northern pike, Esox lucius L., were angled through the ice from an impoundment in eastern Wisconsin, USA, and subjected to one of ten combinations of handling and recovery duration. Plasma samples were collected and analysed for cortisol, lactate and glucose. The results showed a delayed response in the elevation of plasma variables, and a significant interaction between air exposure and recovery time for plasma lactate. No fish suffered mortality during the period of holding. Collectively, these data suggest that northern pike are physiologically resilient to ice‐angling capture stress as long as air exposure times are kept at 4 min or less. 相似文献

Abstract – An individual-based early life history model demonstrated that the timing and distribution of St Lawrence River northern pike ( Esox lucius ) spawning could affect subsequent young-of-year (YOY) production during nursery and influence year-class formation. Three different spawning patterns have emerged from empirical studies, where egg deposition occurred along the entire littoral gradient beginning in seasonally flooded emergent habitats in tributaries, progressing to submerged aquatic vegetation in shallow bays, and ending in deep water littoral habitats (up to 6 m). The spawning period is protracted, and typically lasts 6–8 weeks due to the presence of a strong thermal gradient. The model used temperature as the driving variable to predict egg abundance, stage-specific development, growth, survival, and ultimately relative production of YOY northern pike within 1-ha plots representative of the three habitats. Earlier spawning (mean 21 days) and higher mean daily survival and growth yielded higher YOY net production for tributaries (mean = 3095.4 g ha−1 , SD = 2028.6) relative to the shallow bay habitat (202.5 g ha−1 , SD = 125.7). In contrast, deep littoral habitat represented an ecological sink with little production (<0.9 g ha−1 ). The results demonstrate the importance of the linkage between spawning and nursery processes in determining reproductive success. 相似文献

Abstract – We measured growth of pike larvae ( Esox lucius ) fed with freshwater and brackish-water zooplankton by monitoring larval wet weight during 18 days. The fish food was analysed for species composition, carbon, nitrogen and fatty acids. Further, we analysed fish larval faecal pellet production. Larval weight was significantly higher in fresh water than in brackish water with natural zooplankton as food. Growth, given as wet weight, showed a significant relationship with zooplankton (>100 μ m) food carbon and highly unsaturated fatty acids, 20:5ω3, 22:6ω3, ω6 fatty acids and the ω3/ω6 fatty acid ratio. Phytoplankton fatty acids (10–50 μ m), such as polyunsaturated fatty acids, 20:5ω3, 22:6ω3 and the ω3 fatty acids also correlated strongly with the wet weight of pike larvae. We demonstrated that several factors impact on pike larval growth. 相似文献

Stocking and electrofishing occurrence and abundance data for northern pike Esox lucius L. in >3800 km of French rivers across 7 years were compared to assess the effect of recreational fisheries stocking programmes on wild pike populations. A positive relationship was found between the additive effect of stocking and the size of the stocked pike. However, the stocking programmes implemented in France by recreational fishery managers from 2008 to 2013 increased the probability of pike occurring in the river network, without increasing abundance in well-established pike populations, because pike stocked in their early-life stages were used in most of the stocking programmes. 相似文献

The purpose of the present study is to investigate the gonadosomatic index (GSI %), the absolute and relative fecundity of
one-year-old pike weighing over 400 g and at the same time to study the dependence between the egg size and the size, behavior
and vitality of the free embryos obtained from one- and two-year-old spawners. The study involved two weight groups of females,
differing in age and body weight and length—one-year-old (W = 514 g, SL = 36.1 cm) and two-year-old matured pike (W = 1454 g, SL = 49.3 cm). Ovary samples were fixed and egg follicles containing maturing oocytes counted and weight. The weight
and length of the free embryos from semi-artificial spawning were measured. The results showed that, when raising this species
under farmed conditions, more than 40% (in rarer cases 90%) of one-year-old pike females reached over 400 g and 35 cm (SL)
and reached puberty. Absolute fecundity of 15,030 follicles (30 follicles per gram body weight) was observed; the GSI was
nearly 15% and the follicle weight reached 3.7 mg. This data differs significantly from that obtained from the larger two-year-old
fishes: absolute fecundity 41,363 follicles (28 follicles per gram body weight), GSI nearly 20%, follicle weight 5.8 mg. Results
showed that the different follicle size determines the free-embryo size. A positive linear correlation was found between the
egg follicle weight and the free-embryos weight (r = 0.7143). The free embryos obtain from the one- and two-year-old spawners differed significantly both in terms of their
weight (7.13 mg against 10.61 mg) and total length (0.81 cm against 0.97 cm), the differences being 1.5- and 1.2-fold, respectively. 相似文献

Abstract – We measured the growth and mortality characteristics of northern pike ( Esox lucius ) in a northern Ontario river and examined the influence of flow on these characteristics by comparing our measurements with those estimated for a lake at the same latitude based on published studies. Pike ranged in total length from 229 to 784 mm, in mass from 70 to 4250 g, and in age from 1 to 10 years. The population showed a preponderance of 2–5-year olds, with few fish surviving beyond 7 years of age. Growth, in terms of length increase, was similar to that reported for circumpolar populations. Mean total length at 5 years of age was 577 mm, growth rate of young adults was 62.5 mm year−1 , growth was isometric, longevity was 10 years of age, and the adult annual mortality rate was 49%. Growth and mortality characteristics of this riverine population were similar to those estimated for a lacustrine population at the same latitude. Flow thus had little measurable effect on the growth or mortality of pike possibly because of the overwhelming effect of other abiotic variables such as temperature, length of growing season and productivity. Consequently, growth characteristics of lacustrine populations can be used to assess the health and condition of riverine populations. 相似文献

Fat content and fatty acid profile of two pike yearling groups grown on two different diets were compared. The groups originated from culture on artificial feed. One group (cultured pike fed first pellet then prey‐fish (PF)) was fed with natural food, live prey‐fish, while the other one (cultured pike fed exclusively pellet (PP)) by trout feed through a 3‐month experimental period. Growth of pike was lower with PP than with PF. The trout feed resulted in an increase of the fat content of fillet and the formation of abdominal fat depots. Feeding of natural food decreased the fat content. The proportion of the saturated fatty acids in fillet was higher in the (PF) group. The n‐6 fatty acids (arachidonic C20:4n‐6 and docosatetraenic C22:4n‐6 acids) were lowest in PP‐fed pike. Regarding total n‐3 fatty acids ratio there was no significant difference between the groups, but the level of α‐linolenic (C:18:3n‐3) acid showed significant difference among groups. 相似文献

The Baltic Sea is a unique ecosystem and the largest body of brackish water in the world. It is inhabited by several originally freshwater fish species, one of them being pike (Esox lucius), which is adapted to the mesohaline conditions of the southern Baltic Sea and colonises its south‐western bays and lagoons. Using twelve microsatellite markers, we analysed the genetic structure of 407 Baltic Sea pike collected from ten locations in the coastal zone of the southern Baltic region and adjacent rivers and nearby lakes. We used traditional F‐statistics and a Bayesian approach implemented in STRUCTURE to investigate spatial structuring. Our results show an overall isolation by distance pattern with two distinct coastal clusters. The border area between the two clusters is characterised by a sharp salinity leap, indicating that the dispersal barrier is not physical, but physiological in nature. A third cluster was formed by three lake populations, presumably as a result of past stocking measures. Additional otolith microchemical studies demonstrate the brackish origin and residency of the majority of the pike from the coastal lagoons, supporting previous studies which suggest that the anadromous pike “ecotype” is scarce in this area of the Baltic Sea. Our results contribute to current knowledge on the population genetics of Baltic Sea pike in a previously unsampled area. 相似文献

Abstract Stable isotope analysis was used to determine trophic position and the relative contributions of terrestrial-derived carbon (TDC) and marine-derived carbon for Chinook, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha (Walbaum), pink, Oncorhynchus gorbuscha (Walbaum), and chum, Oncorhynchus keta (Walbaum) salmon fry in near-shore marine habitats. Chum fry were enriched in δ 13 C relative to pink fry, and enriched in δ 15 N relative to both Chinook and pink fry. Between 5.5 and 39.7% of the carbon in the three species was TDC. The TDC was higher in chum fry (28.7 ± 4% SD) than in pink fry (24.9 ± 4.4% SD), but TDC did not differ between Chinook fry (27.8 ± 9.5% SD) and either chum or pink fry. The fry of these three species of Pacific salmon may form a trophic hierarchy with chum fry occupying the highest trophic position and the three species may also partition resources according to carbon source. 相似文献

We incorporated explanatory factors including stream habitat type and fish density into individual‐based models with dynamic connections among adjacent habitat units to infer dispersal behaviour of juvenile steelhead Oncorhynchus mykiss in a Great Lakes watershed. We used mark–recapture data and an inverse modelling approach to estimate daily probability of steelhead moving out of a habitat unit, P(move), according to four competing models. The models used included (i) a null model where all fish had equal movement probability; (ii) a habitat‐dependent model where P(move) depended on the habitat type; (iii) a density‐dependent model of P(move); and (iv) a model where P(move) depended on both density and habitat type. The habitat‐dependent model provided the most parsimonious fit to the observed data according to Akaike's information criteria (AICc). In the null model, P(move) averaged 0.70, whereas P(move) averaged 0.75 in pools, 0.68 in riffles and 0.73 in runs in the habitat‐dependent model. 相似文献

Abstract Intraspecific, seasonal and diel variation in movement behaviours of three stocks of juvenile (age‐2; 399–610 mm total length) muskellunge, Esox masquinongy Mitchill, were assessed using radio telemetry in Forbes Lake (225 ha), IL, USA. Experimental populations included muskellunge from the Upper Mississippi (Leech Lake, MN, USA) and Ohio (Cave Run Lake, KY, USA) river drainages, as well as progeny from North Spring Lake, IL, a mixed‐origin stock. No differences in hourly movement rates or home ranges were detected among stocks. Movement rates were greatest during spring (mean ± SE = 42 ± 4 m h?1), lowest during summer (16 ± 3 m h?1) and intermediate in autumn (28 ± 5 m h?1). Additionally, movement rates during the summer were greater at night than crepuscular periods. Home range sizes were similar during spring and autumn (mean ± SE = 17–18 ± 3–4 ha) and decreased during summer (5 ± 3 ha). Although habitat selection characteristics were generally similar among stocks, fish from the Upper Mississippi River drainage occupied deeper water more frequently and selected the pelagic zone more strongly during the spring than those from the Ohio River and mixed‐origin stocks. Within the littoral zone, muskellunge selected coarse woody habitat and aquatic macrophytes. Collectively, these findings suggest little behavioural differentiation among genetically divergent stocks when evaluated in a common reservoir environment. 相似文献

Individual variation in growth, feed intake and feeding behaviour has been previously recognized in several fish species. However, there is a lack of information regarding the consistency of such individual differences, which is important to understand the probability of a certain individual trait to be inherent, i.e. genetically linked. The goal of this study is to quantify the consistency of individual differences in growth, feed intake/efficiency and feeding behaviour in African catfish Clarias gariepinus (Burchell 1822). Forty‐eight juvenile fish (58.9±0.4 g) were housed individually for 47 days and weighed every second week. The consistency of growth, feed efficiency (residual feed intake (RFI)) and feeding behaviour (total feeding time (TFT)) was determined using repeatability estimates. Fish exhibited pronounced individual variation in growth (CV=52.8%), feed intake (34.3%) and in the TFT (>100%). The repeatability estimates were 0.55 for growth, 0.70 for feed intake, 0.49 for RFI and 0.81 for TFT. Individual differences in growth were mainly explained by individual differences in feed intake (~80%). Individual differences in feeding behaviour contributed to explain differences in feed intake by affecting the RFI. With increasing TFT, the maintenance levels also increased suggesting that slow eaters were less efficient in feed/energy utilization. The results of this study indicate that individual differences in growth, feed intake/efficiency and feeding behaviour are consistent over time and therefore probably inherent. Moreover, this study may have implications on the use of feeding behaviour as a predictor of feed efficiency in juveniles of African catfish. 相似文献

Abstract – The African big barb ( Barbus intermedius , R.) from Lake Awassa, Ethiopia is an important fish species, especially with the ongoing decline of the Nile tilapia ( Oreochromis niloticus , L.) fishery. Their diet and habitat use was studied using stomach content analyses, stable nitrogen and carbon isotopes, and transect netting. Mercury biomagnification was also determined. The big barb was found to primarily exist in the littoral habitat, with molluscs being their predominant food item. The proportion of small fish ( Barbus paludinosus , P.) in the big barb diet tended to vary somewhat with size, with the largest fish tending to have the most piscivorous diet. Mercury concentrations in the big barb ranged from 0.01 to 0.94 mg·kg−1 , and were positively related with size. Fish transects and stable isotope analyses suggest that there may be two feeding forms of big barb in Lake Awassa, with some larger fish preying upon fish (and accumulating higher mercury concentrations). With the declining Nile tilapia fishery in Lake Awassa, the implication of fishermen focusing on large big barb, with its associated higher Hg burdens, is significant with human health ramifications. 相似文献
