European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) and gilthead sea bream(Sparus aurata) are amongst the most important finfish speciescultured in the Mediterranean region. Production of these species isnowadays a well-controlled process, but knowledge of their nutritionalrequirements is still very limited. Nevertheless, a considerable amountof data has been accumulated in recent years, and the purpose of thispaper is to review the recent advances on the nutritional requirementsof sea bass and sea bream. The optimum protein to energy ratio of thediets of sea bass and sea bream seem to be higher than for salmonids, and there is some evidence that high dietary lipid levels have nobeneficial effects on fish performances. Although the essential aminoacid requirements were estimated by the ideal protein method, data basedon the dose-response method is only available for a few amino acids.Essential fatty acid requirements were estimated for sea bream juvenilesbut data is lacking for sea bass. Vitamin and mineral requirements ofthese species are practically unknown. Although the importance ofbroodstock nutrition on gonadal development, spawning and egg quality isrecognized, few studies were done to elucidate these aspects. The recentdevelopment of microparticulate diets for larvae will contribute to theaccurate evaluation of their nutritional requirements.  相似文献

Striped bass, Morone saxatilis (Walbaum), larvae, although physoclistous as adults, initially need to inflate their swimbladders by passing ingested air through a pneumatic duct to the swimbladder. Failure to inflate the swimbladder results in swimbladder atrophy, dysfunctional buoyancy control, deformities, and poor larval survival and growth. The present investigation studied the effects of light intensity, tank colour and photoperiod on the initial swimbladder inflation success of striped bass. In the first experiment, newly hatched larvae were reared for 2 weeks in black or white 350-L circular tanks exposed to incandescent lighting at 163 or 10 lux. Larvae were fed Artemia from 6 days post-hatching (dph). The standard length, and oil globule and yolk areas were measured. Swimbladder condition and evidence of feeding were recorded. To study the effects of photoperiod on inflation, larvae were reared in black tanks exposed to either 8 h:16 h or 16 h:8 h light:dark photoperiods at 139 lux. Striped bass inflated their swimbladders between 6 and 9 dph at 17 oC. Inflation success was significantly higher in black tanks (65%) compared with white tanks (42%), but light intensity did not significantly affect swimbladder inflation. Larval growth and food consumption were better in black tanks, primarily because this treatment resulted in more larvae with inflated swimbladders, although larvae with uninflated swimbladders in black tanks were longer at 12 dph than larvae with inflated swimbladders in white tanks. Larvae that successfully inflated their swimbladders fed earlier and exhibited better growth than larvae with noninflated swimbladders. Larvae reared at higher light intensities used up yolk reserves faster. Exposing striped bass larvae to 8 h:16 h light:dark photoperiods resulted in higher inflation rates (55%) compared to larvae reared at 16 h:8 h light:dark photoperiods (30%). Therefore, black tanks and short photoperiods are preferable for early rearing of striped bass larvae to maximize swimbladder inflation success.  相似文献

The transfer of L-ascorbic acid (AA) from broodstock to the fertilised eggs and it's dynamics in embryos and fasting larvae, has been studied in sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) and sea bream (Sparus aurata L.). Two types of diets were fed to the broodstocks: one containing sufficient ascorbate for normal growth and the other with an extra addition of a very high dose (2,000 mg/kg feed) of ethyl-cellulose-coated L-ascorbic acid. The concentration of AA and total ascorbate (L-ascorbic acid plus dehydroascorbic acid) was detected through several embryo and larval development stages, including larvae just before feeding. In sea bass and sea bream, the mean (SD) concentration of total ascorbate in fertilised eggs originating from broodstock fed AA supplemented diet, was 218.5 (17.7) and 122.4 (5.1) g/g wet weight respectively. This was significantly higher (P < 0.01) than the unsupplemented groups, which contained only 155.9 (6.9) and 103.9 (3.5) g/g wet weight respectively. A diet with a vitamin C content adequate for normal growth, may not be sufficient for broodstock when the goal is transfer of TAA to embryos. © Rapid Science Ltd. 1998  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of harvest practices and slaughter method on stress, quality and shelf life of whole fish (gilthead sea bream, European sea bass and red sea bream) towards the development of a humane slaughter practice. The use of hook and line resulted in significantly lower plasma cortisol and glucose in European sea bass and gilthead sea bream. Water temperature at harvest affected significantly the concentrations of stress indicators (plasma cortisol and glucose), mainly in European sea bass and gilthead sea bream. No significant differences were observed between the harvesting methods, regarding fish appearance, microbial spoilage and sensory scoring and subsequently shelf life. However, significantly lower hardness was recorded in fish harvested using the electric stunner, compared to the fish killed with slurry ice of the same harvesting period. Shelf life ranged between 13–18 days for gilthead seabream, 10–16 days for European sea bass and 10–14 days for red sea bream, depending on harvesting period.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine whether gilthead sea bream and sea bass treated with combination of trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX) differed in terms of physiological and innate immune biomarkers. Fish were exposed to TMP-SMX at 40 ppm concentration for 1 h as a prophylactic usage. Plasma cortisol, glucose, electrolytes (Ca, P, Na, K, Cl, and Mg) as well as plasma lysozyme activity, C-reactive protein (CRP), and ceruloplasmin (Cp) were measured soon after treatment and following 24 and 48 h in normal sea water for recovery. Treatment with TMP-SMX in both gilthead sea bream and sea bass led to an increase in plasma cortisol and glucose. Fluctuations in some electrolytes were found after treatment and during recovery period, however, the ratios of monovalent ions in treated sea bream were similar to control. Hematocrit values as well as plasma lysozyme activity in gilthead sea bream and sea bass were not affected by the treatment. CRP in gilthead sea bream and Cp in sea bass responded to the treatment with decreased levels. Both gilthead sea bream and sea bass displayed a rapid physiological stress response and sensitivity to TMP-SMX exposure, which requires more than 48-h period for regaining homeostasis.  相似文献

We investigate empirically market interactions in the Turkish wild and farmed sea bass and sea bream markets. For gilthead sea bream and European sea bass, we conduct a Granger causality test between the prices of the wild and farmed products, based on the estimation of a vector autoregressive model. Our data set consists of annual fish prices from 1996 to 2016. Our empirical results show that the wild and farmed sea bass are neither substitutes nor complements: the markets for each product are independent. However, in the case of sea bream, the price variations for farmed sea bream have a causal impact on the price of wild sea bream. Moreover, the price of wild sea bream Granger-causes the price variation of farmed sea bream. Thus, the wild and farmed sea bream markets are integrated.  相似文献

The present study was performed to determine the effect of soybean meal (SBM) on the performance and gut histology of gilthead sea bream and European sea bass. Three isonitrogenous and isolipidic extruded diets (crude protein, 470 g kg−1 diet; crude fat, 200 g kg−1 diet) were formulated containing 0 (0 SBM), 180 (180 SBM) and 300 (300 SBM) g kg−1 diet SBM and tested on both species in two separate experiments. Fish at an initial average weight of around 18 g were randomly allocated to 800 L square tanks connected to a closed recirculating system. The trials lasted 80 days for sea bream and 89 days for sea bass. Fish were hand-fed to apparent satiation. Increasing the level of SBM had no significant effects on the specific growth rate, feed intake and feed conversion rate in both the species. In the sea bream distal intestine, lamina propria was moderately and diffusely expanded in some fish due to an increase in cell infiltration represented by mononuclear cells, this finding being more frequent in animals fed diet 300 SBM. No other morphological alterations in intestinal folds, enterocytes or other inflammation signs were noticed in the sea bream distal intestine of any group. No histological differences were found in sea bass in any experimental group.  相似文献

Abstract. Gas bubble disease in larval striped bass, Morone saxatilis (Walbaum), was characterized by overinflation of the swimbladder and the formation of intestinal bubbles. This accumulation of gas hindered normal swimming of the fish and in extreme cases resulted in floating fish. As gas accumulated in the gut, the inner mucosal lining was compressed down into a cuboidal epithelium and in more advanced cases nearly the entire digestive tract was reduced to a squamous inner epithelium surrounded by a thin serosa. A significant increase in swimbladder volume was observed at total gas pressures as low as 102.9% and mortality was increased at 105.6-106.0%. The older larvae (30-day-old) were less sensitive to gas supersaturation than 10- to 19-day-old larvae.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:   Ontogenetic changes of tolerance to, and avoidance of, ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B) were examined in red sea bream Pagrus major and black sea bream Acanthopagrus schlegeli . In the tolerance experiment, larvae and juveniles (age 13–46 days) were put in beakers, and were exposed to one of five different levels of UV-B radiation (1.8, 1.1, 0.2, 0.1, and 0 W/m2) for one hour. Their survival rates were calculated either 12 or 24 h later. In the avoidance experiment, fish (age 3–49 days) were put in a long experimental tank, half of which was covered with UV-blocking film and placed under two levels of UV-B radiation (1.1 and 0.2 W/m2), and their avoidance indices were calculated. Black sea bream had significantly better survival compared to red sea bream for most ages. Only black sea bream of ages 37 and 49 days showed significant avoidance of UV radiation under the higher level of UV-B, whereas both species did not show avoidance on any days at the lower level. The present results suggest that black sea bream are significantly better adapted to habitats with high UV-B radiation, than red sea bream, reflecting that back sea bream live in shallower waters through their early life stages.  相似文献

Together with docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), arachidonic acid (ARA) is being considered to be an essential fatty acid in marine fish larval diets. The objective of the present study was to determine the importance of dietary ARA levels for larval European sea bass performance, when EPA and DHA are also present in the diet. Eighteen‐day‐old larvae were fed, for 14 days, gelatine‐based microdiets containing the following ARA levels: 0.3%, 0.6% or 1.2%. Elevation of dietary ARA up to 1.2% showed a positive correlation with larval survival and a significant improvement in the specific growth rates, body weight and total length. Arachidonic acid was efficiently incorporated into larval lipids, even at a higher proportion than that in the diets. Increased accumulation of ARA did not affect the incorporation of DHA or EPA from the diet into larval total lipids. A significant positive correlation was found between dietary ARA levels and survival after handling stress, indicating the importance of this fatty acid in sea bass larvae response to acute stressors. The results show the importance of ARA for sea bass larvae, but higher dietary levels should be tested to determine whether there is a negative effect of ARA in sea bass as reported for other species.  相似文献

The determination of the optimum time and environmental conditions for initial feeding of sea bass larvae will contribute to the feasibility of their profitable culturing. Survival and growth of larvae were increased when ambient salinity (38‰) was reduced (10‰ and 20‰). Intermediate salinity (26‰) produced consistently better growth. Although increased temperatures (18 and 21°C) improved growth rates, survival was decreased below that at ambient (15°C). Feeding of cultured sea bass larvae has commonly begun at initiation of mouth opening (4 days after hatching). At reduced salinity (13‰ and 26‰) delaying initial feeding until the fifth day resulted in survival equal to that of those fed on the first day after mouth opening. Initial feeding can be delayed 2–4 days without adversely affecting survival or growth of sea bass larvae if they are held at ambient temperature in dilute sea water.  相似文献

The common dentex (Dentex dentex) is a sparid fish which is considered a suitable candidate for Mediterranean aqua-culture. A seven-weeks feeding trial was conducted over the summer period with common dentex, sea bream (Sparus aurata) and sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). All three species were fed to visual satiety with two practical diets with varying crude protein and crude fat levels (55 % protein, 9 % lipids; 46 % protein, 17 % lipids). The initial body weights were 8.2, 11.6 and 17.3 g for common dentex, sea bass and sea bream, respectively. In all cases, specific growth rates were not significantly affected by dietary treatment, but they varied among species (sea bass 1.7–1.8 %; sea bream 2.1–2.3 %; common dentex 3.1–3.2 %). When comparisons between fish species were made, we observed that the increase in growth rates was linked to a decrease of the whole body fat content, as a consequence of a greater utilisation of dietary lipids as energy substrates. Furthermore, in common dentex, the 17 % lipid diet was able to improve protein retention, but this diet effect was less significant in sea bream and sea bass. In contrast to sea bream, the 17 % lipid diet did not up-regulate plasma GH levels in common dentex, which provides additional evidence for a more efficient utilisation of dietary lipids.  相似文献

The Spanish aquaculture sector has undergone a rapid and continuous growth becoming one of the biggest European producers. A wide range of species are farmed and, among them, the sea bass, sea bream and turbot make a significant contribution to the total of the Spanish fish farming output. In this paper, we analyse and predict the medium-term trend of the production and price level for the three leading species previously mentioned. The results obtained show a significant increase in the production of sea bream, sea bass and turbot. The results show also a slight decrease in the sea bream average price, a stable trends for the sea bass and increasing prices for the turbot.  相似文献

At many hatcheries in Japan, a high incidence of lordosis is being reported among marine physoclistous juveniles of red sea bream, Japanese sea bass, and amberjack. Extensive studies being conducted since 1975 to tackle this problem have led to the following conclusions, and effective countermeasures are being proposed.
During early larval development in the temporary physostomous stage, fish must be able to gulp air at the water surface for normal development of the swim bladder. The juveniles that fail to gulp air swim upward in an oblique position because of insufficient buoyancy, causing the backbone to curve in a V-shape.
The managerial solutions proposed are: 1) reduce the strong water current caused by vigorous aeration; 2) provide nutrient-enriched rotifers to produce healthy swimming larvae; and 3) prevent any oily film formation on the water surface.  相似文献

The influence of oil-in-water nanoemulsion on the sensory, chemical, and microbiological qualities of sea bream and sea bass fillets stored at 2 ± 2°C was investigated. The results showed that the use of nanoemulsion extended the shelf life of fish one or two days when compared with the control. Treatment with nanoemulsion significantly (p < 0.05) decreased the values of chemical parameters throughout the storage period. Bacterial growth was inhibited by the use of nanoemulsion. Nanoemulsion had an inhibitory effect on protein denaturation during refrigerated storage and microwave cooking. Based on the results, it can be concluded that sunflower oil-based nanoemulsion extended the shelf life and improved the quality of both sea bream (Sparus aurata) and sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) fillets during storage.  相似文献

Early weaning of marine fish larvae with dry diets delays gut maturation and reduces growth rates. In juvenile and adult forms of several marine fish species, inclusion of dietary mannan oligosaccharides (MOS) improves gut integrity and functionality, but the effects of MOS inclusion in gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata, L.) larval diets have not been addressed yet. Thus, this study assesses the effects of dietary MOS inclusion on survival, growth performance, gut morphology, feed acceptance and quality of gilthead sea bream larvae. For that purpose, 16 days post‐hatched gilthead sea bream larvae were fed four graded levels of MOS (Biomos®, Alltech, Nicholasville, KY, USA) in weaning diets as follows: 0 g kg?1 MOS, 0.5 g kg?1 MOS, 1.5 g kg?1 MOS and 2 g kg?1MOS. Dietary MOS did not affect feed acceptance in gilthead sea bream larvae (P > 0.05). MOS supplementation was correlated in a dose‐dependent way with higher larval survival (P = 0.026). After 15 days of feeding, dietary MOS increased whole larvae (P < 0.01) arachidonic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid. Gilthead sea bream larvae fed 2 g kg?1 MOS presented higher gut occupation with goblet cells after feeding compared with larvae fed the other dietary treatments. Overall, the results suggest that inclusion of MOS in early weaning diets for gilthead sea bream improves essential fatty acid utilization and may promote growth and final survival.  相似文献

The effects of the dietary medicinal herbs Massa medicata, Crataegi fructus (Cf), Artemisia capillaries, Cnidium officinale and their mixture (HM), on growth and resistance against Vibrio anguillarum were examined using larval red sea bream, Pagrus major. The methanol extracts of Cf and HM inhibited the proliferation of seven infectious bacterial strains including the genera Aeromonas, Edwasiella, Photobavterium, Pseudomonas and Vibrio. Rotifers enriched with emulsified bonito oil containing extracts of Cf and HM lowered the bacterial counts in their body on TCBS medium for the genus Vibrio in comparison with rotifers enriched by emulsified bonito oil alone. Although statistically not significant, larvae fed rotifer fortified with Cf from 3 to 20 days after hatching showed the best growth and final body weight followed by those given rotifer with HM and control enrichment. However, final body length of larvae fed rotifer with Cf was significantly larger than larvae fed on rotifers enriched with other herb extracts. After a challenge test with V. anguillarum, survival of larvae fed rotifer with Cf and HM was significantly higher than for the control treatment. These results revealed that Cf and HM in rotifer is useful to promote growth and resistance against V. anguillarum in red sea bream larvae, providing a new technology for mass production of disease‐resistant fry and fingerlings.  相似文献

High mortality of southern bluefin tuna (SBT) Thunnus maccoyii larvae in captivity is a major problem hindering culture of this species. The relationships between body density of SBT larvae, swimbladder inflation and survival were investigated in this study. Swimbladder inflation and changes in volume have a direct effect on body density in larval SBT. Swimbladder inflation was first observed at 3 days post hatch, and larvae with successful swimbladder inflation were able to maintain their body density within a narrow range (?ρ = 0.0006 g cm?3). Although swimbladder volume increased with larval growth, it could not compensate for the increase in body density and did not prevent nocturnal sinking. The increase in body density was greater for larvae that did not inflate their swimbladder. Low percentages of swimbladder inflation (27.5 ± 3.5 %) coupled with negative body buoyancy of SBT might contribute to mortality as larvae sank in the dark phase and made contact with the tank bottom. Management strategies that maintain larvae within the water column and enhance swimbladder inflation are required to improve survival of SBT larvae reared in hatcheries.  相似文献
