1. Turkey poults (1620) were used to compare the effects of three lighting programmes on heavy strain males reared to 188 d: constant light (24L:0D, CON); increasing light (6L:18D at 7 d gradually increasing to 20L:4D by 63 d, INC); a pattern identical to INC followed by a decrease in daylength from 84 d to 10L:14D at 112 d (DID).

2. Lighting affected growth pattern but had no effect on body weight at 118 d or overall food to gain ratio.

3. Both INC and DID lighting reduced overall mortality in comparison to CON light primarily because of a reduction in the incidence of skeletal disease and spontaneous cardiomyopathy. INC and DID lighting increased the incidence of cannibalism.

4. Turkeys given INC or DID lighting had a superior ability to walk in comparison to those birds given CON light.

5. INC and DID males stood, ate and drank more frequently, and sat less often than CON turkeys during behavioural observation.

6. There were no lighting effects on carcase composition except that INC and DID birds had heavier keel bones. The ultimate force per cm2 (stress) required to break femora was greater for turkeys given INC and DID lighting (P = 0.065).

7. Plasma testosterone concentrations at 117 d were 272.5, 115.2 and 29.5 pg/ml for turkeys given CON, INC and DID lighting, respectively (P= 0.072). Testosterone concentration was not related to growth rate.  相似文献

1. Sexed broiler-type chicks were raised either under a continuous (CON) 23 h light (L) and 1 h dark (D) schedule or an increasing photoperiod (INC). From 5 to 11 d of age birds were fed either: ad libitum (AL), energy intake (kJ ME) restricted to 9.414 x gBW0.67 (R1) or energy intake (kJ ME) restricted to 6.276 x gBW0.67 (R2). 2. Blood samples were taken at 4, 7, 11, 14 d of age and weekly thereafter to 49 d of age. Plasma thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) and insulin were determined. 3. CON birds had elevated plasma T3 concentrations to 21 d of age, and greater plasma T4 concentrations at 11 and 21 d of age concurrent with greater food intake. Elevated plasma T3 concentrations in INC birds at 28 d of age coincided with lower plasma IGF-I concentrations at a time when growth and food intake were greater than CON birds. 4. Food restriction elevated plasma insulin and T4 but depressed plasma T3 and IGF-I. Plasma T3 was greater for food-restricted birds at 21 d of age, but subsequently, was generally lower than ad libitum-fed birds which may account for a lack of complete 'catch-up' in growth. 5. Plasma T3 was higher in females at 11 d of age when growth was equivalent for both sexes. From 28 to 42 d, when sex differences in growth became most apparent, plasma T3 was greater in males.  相似文献

A total of 468 male turkeys which had been fed ad libitum and received light for 23 h each day for the first 6 weeks oflife were used to study the effects of subsequent lighting pattern on performance. Three lighting treatments were used: a constant 23 h/d (L1), a constant 14 h/d (L2) and a step‐down pattern in which the light period was reduced from 22 h/d, by 1 h each week, to 14 h/d at 14 weeks, after which it was kept constant until 18 weeks (L3). Within each lighting treatment there were two feeding treatments: birds were either offered food ad libitum or received a restricted amount of food that was the same for all lighting treatments.

At 18 weeks of age there was no difference between body weights of birds receiving treatments L2 and L3, but birds receiving treatment Li were significantly (P< 0.05) heavier. This difference was independent of feeding treatment. Despite the difference in body weight voluntary food intake was slightly greater in birds receiving treatment L2 than in those receiving Li. As a result, a significantly (P < 0.01) more efficient food conversion was associated with L1 than with L2 and L3.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of different light sources and light schedules on the growth and quality of commercial broilers. In each experiment 810 broiler chicks were divided into 3 groups, 3 replicates per group. All were reared at 20 lux. Body weight and food consumption were recorded weekly. Experiment 1. Birds were reared under 3 light sources: incandescent light bulb, warm-white fluorescent light tube or warm-white mini-fluorescent light bulb. Experiment 2. Birds were reared on 3 light schedules. 23 h light and 1 h dark (23L: 1D) throughout; an increasing light schedule with initial 23L:1D then 8L: 16D increasing daylight gradually to 16L:8D or an intermittently increasing daylight schedule (16:8P) where light and dark periods were shorter but portioned to achieve the same total hours per day up to 16L:8D. Broilers reared under mini-fluorescent light bulb were heavier than those under fluorescent tubes or incandescent bulbs by 49 d. Until 42 d of age, photoperiod had no effect on growth. However, at 49 d broilers reared under 16:8P and 16L:8D regimens were heavier than those or 23L:1D. At 42 d, female broilers on 23L:1D, were heavier than those on 16L:8D and 16:8P. Mortality was higher in groups on 23L:1D than on 16L:8D on 16:8P. At 49 d incidence of leg condemnation was higher in the 16:8P group. However, skin damage was lower in this group than in those on 23L: 1D and 16L:8D.  相似文献

Food intake was ad libitum at all other times. 3. Food restriction reduced growth to 49 d of age although some compensatory growth did occur. Food efficiency was not significantly affected by restriction. 4. Although abdominal fat pad weight was significantly reduced for R2 compared to AL, this was not significant on a percentage body weight basis. 5. Adipocyte number in the abdominal fat pad was similar for AL, R1 and R2, but concomitant with a smaller fat pad weight, R2 showed reduced adipocyte volume compared to AL. 6. INC birds were lighter at 21 d of age, but body weights were equivalent to CON by 42 d of age. 7. Abdominal fat pad weight was some 10% larger at 49 d of age for INC birds. Adipocyte volume was unaffected, the increase in adipocyte being entirely caused by an increase in adipocyte number in INC birds.  相似文献

The Cornell (8L:10D:2L:4D) and (Ralston Purina) Biomittent lighting programmes were applied to a commercial strain of White Leghorn laying hens from 20 to 64 weeks of age. 2. The egg production of hens exposed to the Cornell lighting was reduced compared to the Bio-mittent programme. 3. Food consumption was less and efficiency of utilisation significantly improved for the Cornell programme during phase I (20 to 36 weeks) of the study. Significant differences were not observed during phase II (37 to 64 weeks) or for the whole cycle (20 to 64 weeks). 4. Body weights were significantly greater for hens exposed to the Bio-mittent programme during both phases I and II. 5. Egg weights, egg mass and egg weight distributions were not different for hens exposed to the 2 programmes. 6. Food costs and the margin of income over food costs were significantly in favour of the Cornell programme during phase I. However, differences for phase II and the complete cycle were not significant. 7. The Bio-mittent programme offered a computed advantage of 14.4% fewer hours of light usage compared to the Cornell programme.  相似文献

A study was conducted to assess the effects of photoperiod length (constant 23L:1D vs. a photoperiod program going from decreasing to increasing quantity of light), light intensity (bright vs. a dim, reducing intensity), and feed ME levels (low vs. high) on performance and carcass characteristics of female broilers grown to 56 d. Use of a treatment with early decreasing photoperiod followed by an increasing photoperiod reduced feed consumption and subsequent BW early. However, growth compensation occurred and feed consumption and BW were similar across photoperiod treatments by study end. Likewise, reducing light intensity (from 1 to 0.25 fc) stimulated feed consumption and a subsequent BW improvement early, as compared with high-intensity (2 fc) lighting maintained at a constant level. However, the disparity in feed consumption and BW, as influenced by light intensity, did not persist throughout the growing period. Feed conversion was not noticeably affected by photoperiod or light intensity treatments. Minimal effects of lighting were observed for carcass or part yields; however, there appeared to be a subtle substitution effect between leg, wing, and breast yield influenced by lighting program. Birds exposed to the decreasing–increasing photoperiod and dim, reducing light treatments yielded more leg and wing at the expense of breast. Feeding a low ME diet resulted in increased feed consumption and feed conversion. However, birds consuming a low ME diet were more uniform. No effects of treatment on mortality were measured. These data indicate that a decreasing–increasing photoperiod can be used effectively to reduce early growth, yet allow birds to compensate as they approach market age. Low intensity lighting, however, appears to stimulate early feed consumption and growth, although this effect is transitory. Furthermore, the increased feed conversion of birds grown on the low energy diet may make its use less desirable.  相似文献

1. New lighting programmes were designed to change the pattern of goose reproduction, based on the response of predictable avian photoperiodic stimulation. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of a long photoperiod of 20L on shifting goose reproduction to the non-breeding season in an open housing system. 2. Eighty mature White Roman geese were randomly allocated into 4 groups (male:female = 1:4). The supplemental lighting programmes with a daily photoperiod of 20 h were initiated on 22 November and withdrawn when 90% of geese were moulting in the treatment groups. Artificial light intensities of 220, 120 and 20 lux were provided to experimental groups A, B and C, respectively. In contrast, the geese in control group D were kept under natural lighting conditions throughout this study. 3. The annual reproductive curves of all the experimental groups consisted of two separate laying periods. The first period was induced by the supplemental lighting programme while the second was induced by the naturally increasing photoperiod in this subtropical region. The first laying period of the experimental groups occurred in the breeding season, and the second was relocated to the non-breeding season. 4. The supplemental lighting could shift the laying periods of geese to the non-breeding season and had no significant effect on annual reproductive performance. The supplemental light programmes described here were able to manipulate the reproductive season of geese reared in open houses, which would be of practical value.  相似文献

1. Two experiments were conducted to provide further evidence about rate of lay under the Cornell lighting system (2L:4D:8L:10D). Each used 1728 hens of each of 2 brown-egg stocks in 12 light-proof rooms. 2. In the first the Cornell system was compared at 2 light intensities (average values 2 and 10 lux) with a conventional step up lighting programme. In the second, Cornell lighting was introduced at 18, 21 or 24 weeks of age and compared with a step up programme. 3. Total egg output was essentially the same from the Cornell lighting system, using 10 h light/d, as from the step up programme using 16 h/d. When the Cornell system was applied abruptly at 18 weeks to pullets which had been reared on short days (8L:16D) sexual maturity was advanced, resulting in an increase in mean rate of lay to 72 weeks of age and a reduction in mean egg size. Application of the Cornell system from 21 or 24 weeks gave the same egg numbers and the same egg size as the step up programme. 4. Food intake was about 2% lower with the Cornell treatment in both experiments. Although this difference was not quite significant in either, it probably reflects a real effect of the reduced hours of light. It represents a greater potential cost saving than the reduced electricity consumption. 5. Birds in rooms with an average light intensity of 2 lux laid slightly fewer eggs but their eggs were 0.5 g heavier than those laid in rooms maintained at 10 lux. 1. Two experiments are described in which a system of intermittent lighting (15 min light followed by 45 min dark for 15 h, then 15 min light, 30 min dark, 15 min light and 8 h dark) was applied to laying pullets from 37 to 72 weeks of age. A step-up lighting programme was used as a control treatment (8L:16D from 0 to 18 weeks, photoperiod increased by 20 min each week from 18 to 41 weeks, 16L:8D from 41 to 72 weeks of age). 2. Food consumption was reduced by about 5% when intermittent lighting was in use and by 3.8% for the period from 18 to 72 weeks. 3. Rate of lay and egg weight were similar for intermittent lighting and the control treatment, provided that protein content of the diet was adjusted to maintain an adequate amino acid intake. 4. In the second trial 2 stocks, 2 stocking densities confounded with 2 temperatures and 2 types of food trough were used. Each of these factors affected food intake and it was found that more food was saved by intermittent lighting when intake was high and less when it was low. The proportion saved was approximately 5%. 5. Mortality was slightly but not significantly lower in both experiments where intermittent lighting was used. This may indicate that caged pullets are under less stress when intermittent lighting is used.  相似文献

The reduced lameness observed in turkeys reared in a high intensity step-up (HISU) lighting programme as compared to a low intensity step-down (LISD) lighting regimen cannot be explained by differences in the inorganic matrix of the bone, because the proportions of bone ash, bone ash calcium, and bone ash phosphorus did not differ between lighting programmes. At 17 weeks of age, there was a significant difference in the proportion of closed growth plates in males reared on the HISU programme rather than on LISD lighting. These results support the hypothesis that HISU lighting reduces lameness by promoting earlier growth plate closure of long bones.  相似文献

The beneficial effects of different lighting programmes on the incidence of ascites was investigated in an experiment with 360 three-day-old male broiler chickens. At 3 days of age, chicks were randomly divided over three rooms in a high-altitude farm, 2000 m above sea level. During days 14 to 28 ambient temperature decreased during the night but the minimum temperature did not descend below 15 degrees C. In the first room the continuous lighting schedule (CL, 23L:1D) was maintained and in the second room an intermittent lighting schedule (IL, 1L:3D), repeated six times daily, was imposed from 3 days of age. In the third room, an increasing photoperiod schedule (IP, 4 to 14 days, 6L:18D; 15 to 21 days, 10L:14D; 22 to 28 days, 14L:10D; 29 to 35 days, 18L:6D; 36 to 42 days, 23L:1D) was provided. Mortality associated with right ventricular failure and ascites was numerically lower in birds reared under the IL and IP schedules compared to birds reared under the CL schedule, which can be attributed to the temporary reduction in relative growth and feed intake in IL and IP birds. It was concluded that the beneficial effect of lighting schedules could be due to a reduced metabolic rate as a consequence of the altered growth trajectory, as also reflected in the lower haematocrit and plasma T3 levels of IL and IP birds compared to CL birds.  相似文献

1. Two experiments were conducted to assess the effects of lighting regime, dietary calcium source and sodium bicarbonate on production variables and egg shell quality of White Leghorn hens. In both experiments, hens were assigned to one of three lighting programmes that provided evening, morning or intermittent (midnight) lighting supplements in addition to natural daylight. Experimental diets used in the first study were formulated to contain (1) ground oyster shell flour, (2) limestone flour, or (3) and (4) the same +2/3 of the calcium source as hen-size oyster shell grit. The same 4 diets plus those containing hen-size limestone or hen-size limestone and oyster shells were used in experiment II. Additionally, diets in the first experiment contained either 0 or 10 g/kg sodium bicarbonate. 2. Hen-day egg production and food consumption were not affected by any of the experimental treatments. Hens fed on oyster shell diets or exposed to intermittent lighting regimes laid eggs of the highest specific gravity. Shell quality, as measured by specific gravity, was not affected by the addition of dietary sodium bicarbonate. 3. As expected, elevated temperatures (greater than 32 degrees C) significantly reduced egg shell quality. However, this effect was variable particularly in experiment II which used younger hens. 4. The shell quality of eggs from hens exposed to intermittent lighting in experiment II was significantly higher in each of the 4 sampling periods: morning (08.00-12.00), afternoon (12.00-16.00), evening (16.00-20.00) and night (20.00-08.00). 5. It is suggested that midnight lighting programmes provide a means of supporting egg shell quality of older laying hens during the summer months without a significant reduction in egg production.  相似文献

In two trials, each using 960 male broilers from 21 to 42 d of age increasing dietary protein from 175 to 220 g/kg at equal ME increased body‐weight gain from 986 to 1090 g and gain:food ratio from 0·439 to 0·499, while abdominal fat pad weights (40·7 to 35·2 g) and total carcass fat content (140 to 118 g/kg) decreased.

2. From 42 to 49 d gain: food ratio increased with increasing protein content, while body‐weight gain and abdominal fat were not affected.

3. Broilers fed on the lower‐protein diet from 21 to 42 d showed compensatory growth during the finisher phase (371 versus 331 g gained) and utilised food more efficiently (0·383 versus 0·340 g gained/g food consumed).

4. Decisions regarding nutrient concentrations during grower and finisher phases should take into account compensatory growth and food utilisation as well as body‐weight gain, food consumption and carcass composition.

本研究旨在考察持续高温对不同性别北京油鸡生长性能、肉质性状及脂肪沉积的影响.选择健康、体况相近的49日龄北京油鸡公母各72只(公鸡平均体质量(608.58±13.07)g;母鸡平均体质量(518.50±8.33)g)随机分在2个处理中:(1)高温组,(35±0.37)℃;(2)适温组,(25±0.38)℃,分别在2个人工环境气候舱中饲养.每个处理设6个重复,每个重复6只鸡.试验持续23 d.测定试验第1~11、12~22和1~22天的生产性能指标及第12和23天时的胴体性状、肉质性状及脂肪沉积率.结果表明;1)热暴露1~11 d,公母鸡的日增体质量都显著降低(P<0.01),料重比无明显变化(P>0.05).热暴露12~22 d,公鸡的日增体质量显著降低(P<0.01),而母鸡无明显变化(P>0.05),同时,公鸡的料重比显著提高(P<0.01);2)与适温组相比,高温组各性别北京油鸡的肉质性状均无明显变化(P>0.05);3)对公鸡而言,热暴露12 d时腹脂、肌间脂肪和皮下脂肪沉积率及胴体率、腿比率与适温组相比均无显著差异(P>0.05).热暴露23 d时各部位脂肪沉积率均显著降低(P<0.01),而胴体率和腿比率显著提高(P<0.05);对母鸡而言,热暴露12d时腹脂、肌间脂肪沉积率显著降低(P<0.05),热暴露23 d时皮下脂肪率显著降低(P<0.05),腹脂、肌间脂肪沉积率及胴体率、腿比率与适温组相比均无显著差异(P>0.05).结果提示,热暴露12 d,各性别油鸡的日增体质量均显著降低,随着热暴露进一步延续,公鸡日增体质量的降低幅度加大,而母鸡的已无明显变化;随着热暴露时间的延长,公鸡的脂肪沉积逐渐下降,而母鸡的脂肪沉积下降程度有所缓解.  相似文献

1. HG and LG quail lines selected for high and low relative weight gain between 11 and 28 d of age (RG11-28), respectively, and an unselected C line were compared. Mature body weight of both selected lines was held at that of the C line. Progeny of generation 6 were used for analysis. 2. Divergent selection for RG11-28 brought about opposite changes in the growth rates shortly after hatching. 3. Parameters of the Richards function were used to describe the growth curve. The largest differences between HG and LG lines occurred in age (t+) and body weight (y+) at the inflection point of the growth curve (on average for both sexes 28% and 20%, respectively). For HG quail, the parameter t+ was 5 d later than that for LG quail (18.6 vs 14.1 d for males and 20.6 vs 15.6 d for females, respectively), and consequently the parameter y+ was greater (90.3 vs 84.0 g for males and 104.5 vs 96.1 g for females, respectively). The shape of the growth curve expressed by the y+/A ratio was substantialy different for HG and LG quail (44.8% vs 39.6% for males and 43.5% vs 36.8% for females, respectively). 4. The food/gain ratios for the fattening period (3 to 35 d of age) were 3.21, 3.47 and 3.34 for the HG, LG and C lines, respectively. The HG quail started to utilise food more efficiently than the LG quail as early as 10 to 14 d, that is, at the age when their relative growth rate first became greater. 5. The relative deviations of the HG and LG lines from the C line are discussed.  相似文献

(1) This study was to determine the effects of two lighting programmes (continuous--24L:0D or intermittent--12L:3(1L:3D)), two feeding programmes (continuous--ad libitum or meal Jeeding--3 h feed:3 h deprivation x 4 times per d) and two ascorbic acid (AA) supplementations (0 or 150 mg/l in water) on broiler performance and incidence of tibial dyschondroplasia (TD). (2) One-day-old male commercial (Ross PM3) broiler chicks (1600) were used. The chicks were randomly divided into 8 treatment groups (2 x 2 x 2) and their replicates (2) replicates per treatment). (3) Intermittent lighting increased body weight and improved feed conversion. Body weight of broilers was decreased by meal feeding. AA supplementation had no significant effect on the body weight and feed conversion ratio. There was no lighting x feeding x supplemental AA interaction for body weight, feed conversion ratio, mortality rate and carcase weight. (4) Supplemental AA improved the cortical thickness of tibiotarsus and decreased the incidence of TD. (5) It was concluded that the application of intermittent lighting in combination with supplementation of 150 mg/l AA is a useful method to reduce TD in broilers without loss of performance.  相似文献

Sixteen Quarter Horse weanlings were used in a splitplot design experiment to determine the effects of dietary cation-anion difference (DCAD) on mineral metabolism, osteocalcin concentration and variables of growth. Horses were blocked by age and sex and then randomly allotted to two treatment groups (High or Low). Experimental diets with a DCAD of +325 (High, H) and −52 (Low, L) were formed by supplementing diet H with sodium bicarbonate and diet L with calcium chloride. The DCAD was calculated as meq (Na+K)−(Cl+S)/kg of diet DM. The 25-week trial consisted of three 72 h collection periods at 150, 240 and 330 d of age during which a complete urine collection was taken.Multiple fecal grab samples were collected to represent every 2 h post-feeding during each collection period. Venous blood samples were taken for analysis of serum osteocalcin concentration. Weekly measurements were taken to monitor skeletal growth. Representative samples of feed, feces and urine were analyzed for mineral content and apparent mineral balances were calculated by difference. Although osteocalcin concentration did not differ significantly between diets H and L at 150 and 330 d of age, it was higher (P<.05) at d 240 in horses consuming diet H versus diet L. No difference (P>.05) was detected between treatments in any skeletal growth variable measured. Phosphorus balance and digestibility did not differ significantly between treatments across d of age. However, digestibility of P was lower (P<.05) at d 240 and 330 compared to d 150 in both treatments. Horses consuming diet L experienced an increased (P<.05) urinary and a decreased (P<005) fecal excretion of Ca compared to horses consuming diet H. Apparent daily Ca balance was higher (P<.05) in horses consuming diet L than those on diet H at 240 and 330 d of age. Furthermore, Ca digestibility decreased significantly between d 150 and d 240 and 330 in horses consuming diet H. Horses consuming diet L experienced no difference (P>.05) in Ca digestibility across d of age.These findings suggest that horses consuming a low DCAD diet are able to compensate for the increased urinary excretion of Ca by enhancing intestinal Ca absorption and thereby increasing daily CA balance and digestibility.  相似文献
