This article examined the influence of urban homeowners’ general wildlife value orientations (i.e., mutualism, domination) and their specific positive beliefs about coyotes on perceived risk from coyotes. Data were obtained from a mail survey of residents in the Greater Chicago Metropolitan Region during 2012 (n = 1,624, response rate = 34%). As predicted, general wildlife value orientations were related to specific positive beliefs about coyotes. Mutualism had a positive relationship with these beliefs, and domination had a negative relationship. As specific beliefs became more positive, perceived risk decreased. Although mutualism was not related to perceived risk, a significant and positive relationship was observed between domination and perceived risk. Residents with a domination orientation were more fearful of coyotes. The two value orientations explained 64% of the variance in specific positive beliefs, and both domination and these beliefs accounted for 20% of the variance in perceived risk. Implications for managing coyotes in an urban setting are discussed.  相似文献

1. In this study, neural network (NN) and response surface (RS) models were developed to investigate the response [average daily gain (ADG) and feed efficiency (FE)] of young broiler chickens to dietary protein and lysine. For this purpose, data on their responses to dietary protein and lysine were extracted from the literature and separate NN and RS models were constructed.

2. Comparison between the NN and RS models revealed higher accuracy of prediction with the NN models compared to the RS models. In terms of R 2 values, the NN models developed for both ADG (R 2 = 0.923) and FE (R 2 = 0.904) were far superior to the RS models (R 2 for ADG = 0.511; R 2 for FE = 0.67). This suggests that the NN models can serve as an alternative option to conventional regression approaches including use of RS models.

3. Optimisation of the NN models developed for response to protein and lysine showed that diets containing 220.7 (g/kg of diet) protein and 12.85 (g/kg of diet) lysine maximise ADG, whereas maximum FE is achieved with diets containing 241.3 and 13.12 (g/kg) protein and lysine, respectively. Based on the optimisation results, optimal dietary protein and lysine concentrations for maximum FE in broiler chickens during the starting period are higher than for ADG.  相似文献

Liberalized harvest of antlerless moose (Alces alces) in Alaska has resulted in conflict between wildlife managers and hunters. To address this issue, I surveyed moose hunters (n = 845, 35% response rate) to quantify and characterize acceptance of antlerless moose harvest. I found that 16%, 69%, and 15% of hunters thought antlerless hunts were always, sometimes, or never acceptable, respectively. Characteristics of the never acceptable group frequently differed from the other two groups. Using a multinomial logistic regression, I estimated that the odds of a hunter being in the never acceptable group was more likely if he/she strongly distrusted agency data (odds = 4.8), resided in the area with antlerless hunts (odds = 3.5), and had >20 years of moose hunting experience (odds = 3.4). My findings imply that a relatively small proportion of hunters can disproportionately direct wildlife management attention, especially in the absence of scientifically derived information on the human dimensions.  相似文献

The amount of short-wave solar radiation willingly tolerated by lactating Holstein cows on pasture was determined in an equatorial semi-arid environment. The study was carried out on a dairy farm located in Limoeiro do Norte, CE, northeastern Brazil. The observed behaviours were as follows: grazing, under the sun, under the shade, standing, lying, ruminating, idling and wallowing in the water. The behaviours were recorded using instantaneous scan sampling at regular intervals of 15 min from 0600 to 1800 hours over 5 days. On all sampling days, the meteorological variables, including local short-wave solar radiation (R S-W, W m?2), were recorded. The R S-W data were divided into five levels. The sun exposure was more frequent under low (100 %) and moderately low (97 %) levels, when R S-W remained below 500 W m?2. The grazing was more intense under low (100 %) and moderately low (93 %) levels. Above 500 W m?2, the grazing time significantly decreased (11 %). The cows avoided grazing under high (0 %) and very high (0 %) levels, when R S-W exceeded 700 W m?2. The ruminating behaviour was more frequent under high (33 %) and very high (37 %) levels, in which the highest averages of R S-W were recorded (815 and 958 W m?2, respectively). The standing posture was more frequent under low (100 %) and moderately low (97 %) levels. Therefore, the critical R S-W level that motivates cows to stop grazing and seek shade was in the interval between 500 and 700 W m?2.  相似文献

This study compared mean scores on four items from the appropriate use basic belief dimension of the domination wildlife value orientation scale between life-long Alaska residents and migrants to Alaska from the western United States. Basic beliefs were compared among the migrant-sourcing states. Data were collected through a mail survey; 2,264 questionnaires were completed (27% response rate) and 1,673 responses were included in this analysis. When aggregated, migrants scored lower on the appropriate use basic beliefs than life-long Alaskans (M = 4.8 vs. 4.2), but no significant differences were found among the migrant-sourcing states. Among the migrants, length of time living in Alaska and education were predictors of basic belief scores. Although migrants might be exerting a slightly less utilitarian force on Alaska’s dominant orientation toward wildlife, results also allow for the possibility that migrants with utilitarian-leaning views are choosing to move to Alaska.  相似文献

This article examined wildlife value orientations among hunters (n = 1,130) and landowners (n = 1,207) in comparison to the general public (= 1,001 adults) in Denmark, a highly urbanized European country. Respondents were categorized into four value types based on their responses to 19 statements. Significant differences in wildlife value orientations were found. Mutualists and distanced dominated in the public; most landowners and hunters were utilitarian followed by pluralist. Male hunters were more utilitarian than female. More active hunters were more utilitarian; hunters belonging to a hunting association were more utilitarian than those who did not belong to associations. Full-time farmers were more utilitarian than part-time farmers, and conventional farmers were more utilitarian than organic farmers. No significant difference with regard to residence for all three groups was found. Future studies should link what landowners and hunters actually do for the wildlife, and what the influencing factors are (e.g., incentive schemes) with their wildlife value orientations.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to separate marked additive genetic variability for three quantitative traits in chickens into components associated with classes of minor allele frequency (MAF), individual chromosomes and marker density using the genomewide complex trait analysis (GCTA) approach. Data were from 1351 chickens measured for body weight (BW), ultrasound of breast muscle (BM) and hen house egg production (HHP), each bird with 354 364 SNP genotypes. Estimates of variance components show that SNPs on commercially available genotyping chips marked a large amount of genetic variability for all three traits. The estimated proportion of total variation tagged by all autosomal SNPs was 0.30 (SE 0.04) for BW, 0.33 (SE 0.04) for BM, and 0.19 (SE 0.05) for HHP. We found that a substantial proportion of this variation was explained by low frequency variants (MAF <0.20) for BW and BM, and variants with MAF 0.10–0.30 for HHP. The marked genetic variance explained by each chromosome was linearly related to its length (R2 = 0.60) for BW and BM. However, for HHP, there was no linear relationship between estimates of variance and length of the chromosome (R2 = 0.01). Our results suggest that the contribution of SNPs to marked additive genetic variability is dependent on the allele frequency spectrum. For the sample of birds analysed, it was found that increasing marker density beyond 100K SNPs did not capture additional additive genetic variance.  相似文献

Jaguars and pumas are threatened species in Brazil’s Atlantic Forest, especially at the borders of protected areas. This article assessed the influence of emotions, attitudes, existence value, and agency credibility on acceptability of big cats among rural residents living adjacent to two protected areas in this forest. Data from self-administrated questionnaires (= 326) indicated those with positive attitudes toward big cats (β = .28, < .001), those who valued the existence of big cats (β = .14, < .05), those who would feel sorrow if big cats disappeared (β = .21, < .001), and those who considered the managing agency as credible (β = .16, = .002) were more accepting of big cats. The model provided theoretical and practical insights into large carnivore conservation. For example, given the significance of agency credibility, a positive relationship between park authorities and residents is crucial for big cat conservation.  相似文献

1. The objective of this study was to investigate differences in growth performance, serum intermediary metabolites, acute-phase proteins and white blood cells in low, medium and high–residual feed intake (RFI) chickens. It was also assessed if the environment affects the feed efficiency (FE) and FE-related performance and serum profiles of chickens.

2. Individual body weight (BW) and feed intake (FI) were recorded from d 7 of life. At 5 weeks of age, female and male broiler chickens (Cobb 500) were selected according to their RFI (L1: Austria; L2: UK; n = 9/RFI group, sex and locatity -45on) and blood samples were collected.

3. Chickens at L1 had similar FI but a 15% higher BW gain compared to chickens at L2. The RFI values of female chickens were ?231, 8 and 215 g and those of male chickens ?197, 0 and 267 g for low, medium and high RFI, respectively.

4. Location affected serum glucose, urea, cholesterol, non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) and ovotransferrin in females, and serum glucose and triglycerides in male chickens. Serum uric acid and NEFA linearly increased from low to high RFI in females, whereas in males, cholesterol showed the same linear response from low to high RFI. Serum alpha-1-acid glycoprotein and blood heterophil-to-lymphocyte ratio linearly increased by 35% and 68%, respectively, from low to high RFI but only in male chickens at L1.

5. Regression analysis showed significant positive relationships between RFI and serum uric acid (R2 = 0.49) and cholesterol (R2 = 0.13).

6. It was concluded that RFI-related variation in serum metabolites of chickens was largely similar for the two environments and that serum metabolite patterns could be used to predict RFI in chickens.  相似文献

Elektrolytlösungen, die aus physiolog. NaCl-Lüsung ohne Zusatz, IsotonR und aus Medien, die Saponin enthielten, bestanden, wiesen geringere Korrelationswerte zu den Zählkammerergebnissen (r1= 0,91; r2= 0,84; r3= 0,86) auf als die Fotometerwerte (r = 0,92). Verdünnungsmedien, die Triton-X-100 enthielten, korrelierten mit 0,97 zu den Zählkammerwerten, spalteten aber die Akrosommembran. Die günstigsten Ergebnisse konnten sowohl zu den Zähtkammerwerten (r = 0,97) als auch im Abfall (ohne Aufschütteln =–5,4 %; mit Aufschütteln =–0,5 %) der C.C.-Werte nach 10 Minuten mit einem Verdünnungsmedium aus Tyrode-Lösung und Formalinzusatz erzielt werden. für die Herstellung der Verdiinnung ist sowohl die Blutzuckerpipette als auch die Pipette “Marburg” in gleicher Weise geeignet. Zwischen Messungen bei 4°C und 20°C bestanden hoch signifikante Unterschiede (p < 0,001). Kurz- (5 sec.) und Langzählung (25 sec.) korrelierten mit 0,99 (b = 1,029). Contents Investigations on factors influencing the accuracy of bull spermatozoacounts with an electronic particle counter (Coulter Counter) In 200 ejaculates of bulls investigations were carried out, whether or not density determinations by the Coulter Counter are influenced by the type of electrolyt solution, temperature during determination, the duration of counting as well as the type of dilution pipettes. Electrolyt solutions containing only physiological saline without further additive, IsotonR and Saponin containing media resulted in a lower coefficient of correlation with respect to the haemocytometer (r1=0,91; r1=0,84; r3= 0,86) than values obtained by the photometer (r = 0,92). Triton-X-100 containing dilution media were highly correlated (0,97) with haemocytometer counts, although acrosome membranes were disrupted. The most favourable results could be obtained by use of “Tyrode-Solution” containing form-aldehyde. Data obtained in this way were highly correlated (r = 0,97) with the haemocytometer counts as well as with the decline (without shaking =–5,4 %; with shaking =–0,5 %) of the coulter counts after 10 min. Both, the “Marburg” pipette as well as a standard blood sugar pipette are suitable for diluting. The difference of the coulter counts at 20°C and 4°C was highly significant (p < 0.001). 5 and 25 sec counting were highly correlated (r = 0,99; b = 1,029). 1. The responses to genetic selection on yolk proportion as a technique for increasing egg dry matter content, an important criterion for the egg-product industry, was investigated in a pedigree flock of White Leghorn hens.

2. Parents were preselected on high and low yolk proportion from a base population. The absolute estimated breeding value for yolk proportion of both groups differed by 3%. The realised selection difference in dry matter content of eggs between groups was more than 1% in the analysed offspring population.

3. Heritability estimates were moderate and dry matter had a lower heritability (h2 = 0.39) than yolk proportion (h2 = 0.44).

4. The genetic correlation between yolk proportion and dry matter content was highly positive (rg = 0.91). Genetic correlations with egg weight were negative and would have to be compensated for in a breeding programme (rg = ?0.76 with yolk proportion and r= ?0.64 with dry matter content). The genetic correlation between the laying performance and yolk proportion was r= 0.28 and close to zero (r= ?0.05) for dry matter content.

5. Easy recording and lower undesirable correlations make yolk proportion more suitable for commercial selection compared with egg dry matter content in layer breeding.  相似文献

Abstract

Thirty-two Chinese Holstein lactating cows were used to investigate the relationship of milk urea nitrogen (MUN) and nitrogen excretion loading to the environment. Cows were fed a similar amount of forage, and concentrates according to milk production. Total collection of urine and faeces were conducted continuously for three days. The milk urea nitrogen was significantly correlated to total nitrogen excretion (R 2=0.70), urinary nitrogen excretion (R 2=0.85), and nitrogen excretion from faeces (R 2=0.22). The following equation was proposed to predict total nitrogen excretion (TNE) (g/d) based on milk urea nitrogen (MUN) (mg/dl): TNE?=?15.46(±1.83)×MUN?+?193.40(±28.79). The results obtained in this study suggested that MUN might be used to predict TNE from lactating cows.  相似文献

Objective

To assess quality of sedation following intramuscular (IM) injection of two doses of alfaxalone in combination with butorphanol in cats.

Study design

Prospective, randomized, ‘blinded’ clinical study.

Animals

A total of 38 cats undergoing diagnostic imaging or noninvasive procedures.

Methods

Cats were allocated randomly to be administered butorphanol 0.2 mg kg?1 combined with alfaxalone 2 mg kg?1 (group AB2) or 5 mg kg?1 (group AB5) IM. If sedation was inadequate, alfaxalone 2 mg kg?1 IM was administered and cats were excluded from further analysis. Temperament [1 (friendly) to 5 (aggressive)], response to injection, sedation score at 2, 6, 8, 15, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 minutes, overall sedation quality scored after data collection [1 (excellent) to 4 (inadequate)] and recovery quality were assessed. Heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (fR) and arterial haemoglobin saturation (SpO2) were recorded every 5 minutes. Groups were compared using t tests and Mann–Whitney U tests. Sedation was analysed using two-way anova, and additional alfaxalone using Fisher's exact test (p < 0.05).

Results

Groups were similar for sex, age, body mass and response to injection. Temperament score was lower in group AB2 [2 (1–3)] compared to AB5 [3 (1–5)] (p = 0.006). Group AB5 had better sedation at 6, 8, 20 and 30 minutes and overall sedation quality was better in AB5 [1 (1–3)], compared to AB2 [3 (1–4)] (p = 0.0001). Additional alfaxalone was required for 11 cats in AB2 and two in AB5 (p = 0.005). Recovery quality, HR, fR and SpO2 were similar. Seven cats required oxygen supplementation. Complete recovery times were shorter in AB2 (81.8 ± 24.3 versus 126.6 ± 33.3 minutes; p = 0.009). Twitching was the most common adverse event.

Conclusions and clinical relevance

In combination with butorphanol, IM alfaxalone at 5 mg kg?1 provided better quality sedation than 2 mg kg?1. Monitoring of SpO2 is recommended.  相似文献

Objectives – To evaluate the use of citrated recalcified (nonactivated) thromboelastography (TEG) in healthy horses and horses with colitis and suspected coagulopathies. Design – Prospective, observational study conducted between October 2007 and June 2009. Setting – Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Animals – Forty‐five healthy adult horses and 12 sick adult horses with colitis and prolonged prothrombin time (PT) or activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT). Interventions – None. Measurements and Main Results – Whole blood was collected on admission. Coagulation profile (PT, aPTT, platelet count, and fibrinogen concentration) and citrated recalcified whole blood TEG analysis (R‐time [R], K‐time [K], angle [α], maximum amplitude [MA], G value [G], lysis at 60 min [LY60]) were evaluated. Mean values (SD) for TEG parameters in healthy horses were: R=10.4 (3.1) minutes; K=3.5 (1.2) minutes; α=46.3 (11.0)°; MA=55.6 (5.1) mm; G=6,429 (1,341) dyn/cm2, and LY60=5.1 (2.4)%. Mean coefficients of variation for intra‐assay/interindividual variability in healthy horses were: R=4.7%/30.7%, K=4.8%/35.3%, α=4.4%/23.8%, MA=1.4%/9.3%, G=3.4%/20.8%, and LY60=13.1%/47.7%, respectively. Horses with colitis and prolonged PT and/or aPTT had longer mean values for R (P<0.001) and K (P<0.001), narrower mean α (P<0.001), decreased mean MA (P=0.001), and smaller mean G (P=0.02); changes consistent with hypocoagulability. Conclusions – Citrated recalcified (nonactivated) TEG demonstrated changes consistent with hypocoagulability in horses with colitis that had preidentified coagulation abnormalities. This technique has high interindividual variability and low intra‐assay variability. TEG may be useful for detecting hypocoagulable states in horses with colitis and suspected coagulopathies.  相似文献

Evidence suggests that religion is an important driver of peoples’ attitudes toward nature, but the link between religion and carnivore conservation is poorly understood. We examined peoples’ attitudes in Buddhist (= 83) and Muslim communities (= 111) toward snow leopards (Panthera uncia) and wolves (Canis lupus) in Ladakh, India. We found that the effect of religion on attitudes was statistically nonsignificant, and was tempered by gender, education, and awareness of wildlife laws. Even though religion by itself was not an indication of an individual’s attitude toward large carnivores, the extent to which he/she practiced it (i.e., religiosity) had a positive correlation with pro-carnivore attitudes in the case of Buddhist but not Muslim communities. Our findings indicate that it may be useful to integrate locally relevant religious philosophies into conservation practice. However, the emphasis of conservation messaging should vary, stressing environmental stewardship in the case of Islam, and human–wildlife interdependence in the case of Buddhism.  相似文献

Abstract

The effect of long-term freshwater acclimation on the blood and plasma ion composition of Red Drum Sciaenops ocellatus was investigated with the goal of elucidating the necessity of ion remediation. Four replicates (n = 50) of freshwater-acclimated (FW) fish (1.6 ± 0.2 g) were raised in 25-m3 tanks supported by 140,000 L of recirculating water. Four replicates (n = 50) of seawater (SW) fish groups were placed in 40-m3 offshore cages at 32–35 psu. Blood was collected from 100 fish (FW = 578 ± 50 g; SW = 686 ± 45 g) of each group (FW, SW) after 8 months of rearing. During the grow-out phase, the survival of FW and SW fish was 57.5% and 92.2%, respectively. The water ion composition (mainly the Ca2+/K+ [43%] and Ca2+/Mg2+ ratios [1%]) explained 56.6% of the plasmatic ion variability in the fish groups. Freshwater exposure produced significant reductions in osmolality and in several plasma indicators (Na+, Cl?, and Mg2+); the K+ levels from FW fish were the most compromised parameter. The water Ca2+/Na+ ratio had a greater influence (44%) on the plasma chemistry parameters, mainly glucose and creatinine. Freshwater-acclimated fish had a higher percentage of hematocrit, hemoglobin, and red blood cells than SW fish, but the water quality explained only 12.5% of the blood parameter variability between the FW and SW groups. The results support the conclusion that Red Drum tolerates salinity variations and can adopt a relatively stable condition for short periods; however, the data suggest that Red Drum have only a limited ability to withstand a hyposmotic environment for long periods due to their limited ability in maintaining K+ concentrations without external supplementation. Freshwater environments with high Ca2+/Na+, Ca2+/K+, and Ca2+/Mg2+ ratios appear to be a chronic stress factor that should be considered in future experiments.

Objective

To evaluate three routinely used tidal volumes (VT; 10, 12 and 15 mL kg?1) for controlled mechanical ventilation (CMV) in lung-healthy anaesthetized dogs by assessing alveolar ventilation (VTalv) and dead space (DS).

Study design

Prospective, randomized clinical trial.

Animals

A total of 36 client-owned dogs.

Methods

Dogs were randomly allocated to a VT of 10 (G10), 12 (G12) or 15 (G15) mL kg?1. After induction CMV was started. End-tidal carbon dioxide tension was maintained at 4.7–5.3 kPa by changing the respiratory frequency (fR; 6 < fR < 30 breaths minute?1). After 29 minutes, cardiovascular and respiratory variables were recorded for 3 minutes using a multiparameter monitor, volumetric capnography (VCap) and a blood gas analyser. The ratios of VTalv to body weight (VTalv kg?1) and airway DS to VT (VDaw/VT), Bohr's DS (VDBohr), Enghoff's DS (VDBE) and the volume of expired carbon dioxide per breath (VTCO2,br) were calculated. Mean airway pressure (MawP), fR and peak inspiratory pressure (PIP) were recorded. Data were analysed using one-way anova and Student–Newman–Keuls tests with a statistical significance set at p < 0.05.

Results

No differences were observed for demographic data and cardiovascular variables between groups. A total of three dogs were excluded because of technical difficulties and one because of fR > 30. VTalv kg?1 (p = 0.001) increased and VDBohr (p = 0.002) decreased with greater VT. VTCO2,br (p = 0.017) increased and VDaw/VT (p = 0.006), VDBE (p = 0.008) and fR (p = 0.002) decreased between G10 and G15. PIP (p = 0.013) was significantly higher in G15 compared with that in G10 and G12. No changes were observed in MawP.

Conclusions and clinical relevance

A VT of 15 mL kg?1 is most appropriate for CMV in lung-healthy dogs (as evaluated by respiratory mechanics and VCap) and does not impair cardiovascular variables.  相似文献

We carried out an inter-laboratory trial to compare the serological tests commonly used for the detection of specific Neospora caninum antibodies in cattle in Ibero-American countries. A total of eight laboratories participated from the following countries: Argentina (n = 4), Brazil (n = 1), Peru (n = 1), Mexico (n = 1), and Spain (n = 1). A blind panel of well-characterized cattle sera (n = 143) and sera representative of the target population (n = 351) was tested by seven in-house indirect fluorescent antibody tests (IFATs 1–7) and three enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs 1–3; two in-house and one commercial). Diagnostic performance of the serological tests was calculated and compared according to the following criteria: (1) the “Pre-test information,” which uses previous epidemiological and serological data; (2) the “Majority of tests,” which classifies a serum as positive or negative according to the results obtained by most tests evaluated. Unexpectedly, six tests showed either sensitivity (Se) or specificity (Sp) values lower than 90%. In contrast, the best tests in terms of Se, Sp, and area under the ROC curve (AUC) values were IFAT 1 and optimized ELISA 1 and ELISA 2. We evaluated a high number of IFATs, which are the most widely used tests in Ibero-America. The significant discordances observed among the tests regardless of the criteria employed hinder control programs and urge the use of a common test or with similar performances to either the optimized IFAT 1 and ELISAs 1 and 2.  相似文献

Objective: To determine conversion formulas so that values from the HemoCue® hemoglobinometer (HbHQ) could be equated to hemoglobin concentrations measured by the gold‐standard cyanomethemoglobin (HbCY) method and used for estimation of packed cell volume (PCV) in cats. Study design: Prospective, in vitro. Animals: Twelve healthy, adult, client‐owned cats. Interventions: The PCV of 12 parent blood samples was manipulated between ~3 and ~80% by removing or adding autologous plasma. Hemoglobin was measured by the HbCY method at a university clinical pathology laboratory and by the azidemethemoglobin method in a HbHQ. PCV was determined by micro‐centrifugation. Measurements and main results: Hemoglobin varied from 1–26 g/dL. Repeated‐measures regression of HbCY on HbHQ demonstrated that the Y‐intercept was not different from zero. When the regression was repeated, forcing the line through the origin the coefficient for converting HbHQ to HbCY was not significantly different from 1.0 (adjusted R2=99.7%). The conversion formula was HbCY=HbHQ. Using similar methods, the conversion formula for estimating PCV was PCV=3.1 HbHQ (adjusted R2=99.8%). Conclusion: Hemoglobin concentration measured by the HemoCue® was indistinguishable from the (HbCY) method in feline blood over a wide range of hemoglobin concentrations. This study demonstrates that in cats PCV=3.1HbHQ. Clinical relevance: The HemoCue® is useful for point‐of‐care hemoglobinometry and for estimating PCV in cats.  相似文献
