Gross changes and other necropsy findings in 36 purebred Brown Swiss cattle affected with bovine progressive degenerative myeloencephalopathy were nonspecific. Primary microscopic lesions were confined to the central nervous system, specifically the white matter of the spinal cord, axons in some brainstem nuclei, and Purkinje cells of the cerebellar cortex. Spinal cord lesions involved only the white matter and consisted of axonal degeneration, loss of axons and myelin, and status spongiosus. Axonal degeneration was characterized by swelling and fragmentation of the axoplasm or formation of large, discontinuous swellings referred to as spheroids. Lesions were qualitatively similar at all levels, but quantitatively dissimilar in the same funiculi at different levels. Both ascending and descending fibers were involved but correlation to specific fasciculi was not evident. Lesions always were most severe in thoracic spinal cord segments. Little or no astroglial response, no inflammatory response, and no involvement of gray matter were observed in the spinal cord. Cerebellar lesions were limited to selective degeneration and loss of Purkinje cells and occasional swelling of Purkinje cell axons (torpedos) in the granular layer of the cerebellar cortex. Brainstem lesions were inconsistent and limited to occasional axonal swelling in brainstem nuclei. The pathogenesis of bovine progressive degenerative myeloencephalopathy is unknown and possible mechanisms were discussed. The disease exhibits a familial pattern in Brown Swiss cattle and may be hereditary. Extraneural lesions were considered secondary to central nervous system lesions.  相似文献

Spongiform encephalopathies occur in humans and several domestic animal species. Among them, the bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) has aroused considerable interest because of a massive outbreak of this disease in Great Britain, which is thought to result from feeding meat and bone meal contaminated with the spongiform encephalopathy agent. We observed the first case of BSE in Switzerland, which is also the first case on the European continent. A 6 year old cow suffered from progressive neurological disease. On neuropathological examination typical spongiform changes and neuronal vacuolation were found. The origin of the infection remains unknown. It cannot be excluded that the animal was exposed to cattle feed derived from Great Britain. It is possible that additional sporadic cases may occur in Switzerland, an outbreak such as in England is unlikely to happen.  相似文献

We investigated 2 outbreaks of osteomalacia as a result of phosphorus (P) deficiency in herds of lactating beef cows grazing subtropical native pastures in Uruguay. Cows exhibited pica, difficulty to stand and walk, rib fractures, and body weight loss even with adequate forage availability. Osteopenia and severe osteomalacia were observed on gross and histologic examination. The concentrations of bicarbonate-extractable P in soil (4.0, 4.1 mg P/kg), total P in pasture (0.9, 1.1 g P/kg), inorganic P in serum (1.0, 0.71 mmol P/L), and P in bone (73 mg P/mL) were all low. Although injectable and mineral salt supplements provided additional P in both outbreaks, these supplementary amounts were insufficient to prevent P deficiency. The P ingested by the cows from the pasture and supplements would have provided 20–55% of their daily P requirements of ~21 g P/d. Osteomalacia occurred in cattle at the 2 ranches as a result of severe P deficiency in the soil and forage, and inadequate P supplementation. Following diagnosis, control of P deficiency in beef cattle requires estimation of the amount of pasture P ingested and provision of sufficient additional supplementary P to meet the animals’ requirements.  相似文献

Cerebellar abiotrophy in crossbred cattle   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Cerebellar abiotrophy affected 9 of 74 calves sired by a Poll Hereford bull over 2 successive calving seasons. The disease was characterised by episodes of recumbency and ataxia, with hypermetria and wide base stance. Clinical signs commenced between birth and 8 months of age. Two calves which were affected first at 8 months of age recovered clinically 9 months later. Histological lesions were found in the cerebellar cortex of 7 calves and consisted of segmental degeneration and loss of Purkinje cells, and axonal swellings. The clinical signs and pathological findings were consistent with bovine familial convulsions and ataxia, which has not been described previously in Australia. The clinical signs were not attributable to the lesions observed in the cerebellum and an underlying electrophysiological abnormality is proposed. The aetiology of the condition is probably genetic and appears to have a multifactorial basis.  相似文献

Features of focal ulcerative dermatitis ("breast buttons"), a skin disease occurring most commonly in male turkeys, are described. Single or, less commonly, multiple ulcers 16 to greater than 900 mm2 in size were located in the unfeathered breast skin over the anterior keel. Ulcer margins were raised, and the center was filled with a firmly adherent, hard scab. Microscopically, there was a sharp demarcation between the ulcer and adjacent hyperplastic epithelium. Vasculitis, necrosis of dermal vessels, mild to moderate heterophil infiltration, and fibrosis were found in the dermis. The characteristic granulomatous response to exudate seen in avian species was absent. Although bacterial colonies, foreign debris, and (rarely) fungi were found on the lesion surface, they were absent deep in the ulcer, suggesting they are not its cause. The lesion had no clinical effect on the turkey but was frequently trimmed at processing, resulting in downgrading and economic loss. There is no correlation between the size of "breast buttons" and occurrence of "breast blisters," an inflammation of the sternal bursa.  相似文献

Supplementation of grazing cattle is a routine management practice that serves several purposes. It can be used to fill the gaps created by seasonal deficiencies in forage growth and quality. Supplementation can also extend pasture availability during drought, increase the carrying capacity of the pasture, and provide nutrients that are inadequate or missing in the forage. Supplementation can also be used effectively to dilute anti-quality factors present in certain forages. Locally available by-products of the grain and food-processing industries can provide a cost-effective source of nutrients to balance the nutritional needs of grazing cattle. It is expected that the availability and cost effectiveness of these feeds will only grow as cattle compete with the biofuels industry for grain in the future.  相似文献

LINDHOLM, A., H.-E. JOHANSSON & P. KJÆRSGAARD: Acute rhabdomyolysis (“tying-up”) in standardbred horses. A morphological and biochemical study. Acta vet. scand. 1974, 15, 325–339. — Morphological, biochemical and histochemical changes were studied in muscle needle biopsy specimens (gluteus medius) from 59 standardbred trotters with acute clinical symptoms of the “tying-up” disease. All horses had increased levels of serum enzymes SGOT and SCPK. The biopsy specimens were taken at various intervals after onset of clinical symptoms (1–4 hrs., 18–24 hrs. and 2–20 days). Ry light microscopy it was shown that the muscular alterations had a focal distribution and were of the hyalin degeneration type with insignificant inflammatory reaction and slight calcification. The ultrastructural changes apparently commenced with myofibrillar waving, mitochondrial and sarcotubular alterations and terminated with myofibrillar degeneration and necrosis with invasion of inflammatory cells. The inflammatory cells were ultrastructurally similar to monocytes and macrophages. The degenerative changes mainly comprised fast twitch (FT and FTH) fibres as histochemically evidenced by myofibrillar ATPase and alkaline phosphatase staining.Riopsies from diseased muscle 1–4 hrs. after the onset of “tyingup” contained a low muscle concentration of glycogen, ATP and CP and a high concentration of lactate and glucose. Hence it is suggested that the described muscular alterations may be caused by a deranged carbohydrate metabolism caused by a local hypoxia. It was found that the “tying-up” disease resembled idiopathic rhabdomyolysis in man and was thus designated “equine rhabdomyolysis”.histochemistry; horse; rhabdomyolysis; skeletal muscle; “tying-up”; ultrastructure.  相似文献

A seroepidemiological survey of Neospora caninum was done in a dairy farm in Uruguay employing indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT). Sera from 217 cattle (155 cows, 31 heifers and 31 calves) were tested for N. caninum antibodies in July 2000 and it was found that abortions were significantly associated with the seropositivity of the cows by chi(2)-test (P = 0.025). The cows with an IFAT titre of 1:3200 were at a significantly higher risk of abortion than seronegative cows (P = 0.0013). Neospora organisms were detected in the brains of two aborted foetuses by immunohistochemical examination. The infection of N. caninum was considered postnatal because of the even distribution of seropositive cows (60%), low seroprevalence (20%) in calves and no significant correlation in the serostatus between calves and their dams (P = 0.43). A fitted binomial generalised linear model revealed that there was an increasing risk of abortion with increasing IFAT titre and increasing age between 2 and 6 years.  相似文献

A severe atrophy of the cerebellum was observed in a 7-month-old male Italian hound with a history of progressive ataxia and head tremor from the age of 3 months. On clinical examination, signs included severe hypermetric gait, head tremors and proprioception deficits in all limbs. At necropsy, a pronounced symmetrical reduction in size of the cerebellum was the only gross lesion observed. Histological examination of the cerebellum revealed marked thinning of the granular and molecular layers with almost complete loss of granule cells. Purkinje cells had normal morphology and distribution. These findings differ from those of previous reports of cerebellar cortical abiotrophy in dogs, which were mainly characterized by prominent Purkinje cell degeneration and loss.  相似文献

A 5-year-old Staffordshire terrier exhibited slowly progressive signs of cerebellar disease, including nystagmus and dysmetria. After a 30-month course, the dog was euthanized. Grossly, the cerebellum was small and comprised only 5% of the brain weight. Histopathological examination of the brain documented diffuse degeneration. Purkinje cells were most depleted, but granular cells and the molecular layer of cerebellum were also depleted. The history and necropsy examination were evidence of late-onset primary cerebellar degeneration.  相似文献
