The interactions between the respiratory and cardiovascular system in neonates with severe illness are relevant to the equine clinician. There is little information available regarding the treatment of congenital heart disease or pulmonary hypertension in foals, thus a team approach with experts in these fields may help our equine cases.  相似文献

Equine gastrointestinal motility is a central issue in cases of equine colic, post operative convalescence and alimentary conditions encountered in practice. There are significant syndromes of intestinal dysmotility in the horse such as obstructive disorders and post operative ileus that are still poorly understood. This review describes the various areas of research that aim to elucidate the pathogenesis of intestinal hypo- or hypermotility by research methods, which include studies at the cellular level, and those that employ in vitro or in vivo techniques of evaluating the physiology and mechanical means of ingesta transit through the alimentary tract. The review discusses future directions for studies which will hopefully lead to better understanding and appropriate measures for diagnosis, therapy and prevention of ileus and other motility disorders.  相似文献

Intestinal dysmotility following equine colic surgery contributes negatively to financial and prognostic outcomes. This study assessed duodenal contractility as a predictor of post-operative reflux and survival to discharge in horses following colic surgery. Duodenal contractility was assessed using daily transabdominal ultrasound examinations in 49 horses for up to 7 days (Day 1 scan performed between 6 and 36 h post-surgery and sequential daily scans performed between 08.00 and 20.00 h) following colic surgery (September 2014–April 2017). The duodenum was visualised ventral to the right kidney, and duodenal contractions were measured over 2 min. The signalment of each horse and surgical findings were noted. Outcomes were defined as horses that refluxed (>5 L/24 h beyond 24 h) or did not reflux post-operatively and those that were survivors or were nonsurvivors. A significant difference in duodenal contractions at Day 1 post-operatively was identified between horses that refluxed (n = 8) and those who did not reflux (n = 32; P = 0.013) but not between those who were nonsurvivors (n = 7) and survivors (n = 32; P = 0.113). Horses in the reflux group had reduced duodenal contractility comparatively. There were no significant differences in duodenal contractions in the sequential days after the Day 1 scan or between duodenal contractions and surgical findings. A significant association was identified between duodenal contractions and survivors (P = 0.039; odds ratio 1.88). The main study limitations were the single centre design with consequent small numbers of horses included. The study did not account for other factors that may contribute to alterations in motility such as drug administration or stages of re-feeding. This preliminary study indicates that Day 1 (6–36 h post-operatively) duodenal contractions may predict reflux (>5 L/24 h beyond 24 h) and that increased duodenal contractions are associated with survival. However, there was no clear distinction or cut-off between groups. Future studies with greater numbers of horses yielding better statistical power are required.  相似文献

Effects of medetomidine on intestinal and colonic motility in the dog   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The motor responses of the jejunum and colon to stimulation of α2-adrenoceptors by medetomidine and clonidine were investigated in four dogs. In fasting dogs, medetomidine, at a dose rate of 30 μg/kg i.v., disrupted the migrating myoelectric complex (MMC) pattern of the small intestine for about 2 h. Similar, but shorter-lasting effects were also induced by clonidine (30 μg/kg i.v.) on the jejunum. The administration of α2-agonists inhibited colonic motility in fasting dogs, although medetomidine-induced inhibition was preceded by a short period of increased muscle tone. All these effects were reversed by the α2-antagonists atipamezole (0.15 mg/kg i.v.) and yohimbine (0.20 mg/kg i.v.). In fed dogs, medetomidine (30 μg/kg i.v.) induced a strong increase of the tone on the proximal colon, while the activity of the medium and distal colon was completely suppressed. Yohimbine (0.50 mg/kg i.v.) immediately restored the activity of the colon and induced a propagated giant contraction and defaecation by the animal. These data confirm the importance of a2-adrenergic receptors in the control of intestinal and colonic motility in the dog.  相似文献

Although large intestine impactions are commonly treated with i.v. fluids combined with the osmotic laxative MgSO4, enteral fluids are less expensive and also appear to be efficacious for impactions. Therefore, this study was conducted to compare the systemic and gastrointestinal effects of enteral fluids with the changes produced by i.v. fluids combined with MgSO4. Four horses with a fistula in the right dorsal colon alternately received both treatments in 2 periods one week apart. Sixty litres of fluids were administered continuously (10 l/h) through a venous catheter or a nasogastric tube. Magnesium sulphate (1 g/kg bwt) was administered via nasogastric tube before i.v. fluid therapy. Two horses had mild abdominal discomfort at the end of enteral fluid therapy. Pollakiuria, hypostenuria, increased bodyweight, increased faecal and ingesta hydration, and decreased PCV, plasma protein and plasma magnesium were produced by both treatments. Abdominal distention and more pronounced changes in bodyweight and ingesta hydration were seen with enteral fluids. Intravenous fluids plus MgSO4 produced hypocalcaemia and more pronounced changes in plasma protein. These results indicate that enteral fluid therapy is more effective in promoting ingesta hydration and produces less pronounced systemic effects than i.v. fluid therapy plus MgSO4.  相似文献

Equine piroplasmosis (EP) is a hemoprotozoan disease cased by Babesia caballi and B.equi. It is a tick-borne disease principally characterized by fever, anemia, and icterus. Clinically inapparent babesia carrier horses are important in the dissemination of the disease. Clinical episodes occur under two conditions:
1. When susceptible horse stock is moved into endemic EP areas; and
2. When inapparent babesia carriers are moved into non-endemic areas, then in the presence of certain ticks, babesiasis is spread to the susceptible horse population.
Ticks are the principal vectors of equine piroplasmosis, additionally contaminated hypodermic needles have shown to spread B. equi among horses. In endemic EP areas, it has been shown that babesiasis can cause unthriftyness in foals.Control of babesiasis is principally directed at tick control. Various tickacidal sprays or dips can be used to break the life cycle of ticks.Chemotherapy, using certain aromatic diamidines, is an adjunct to tick control and also facilitates the international relocation of horses and other equidae. Objectives of chemotherapy are divided as follows: 1. In EP endemic areas, the therapeutic aim is to subdue the babesia parasites and leave the host horse in a state of premunition; and 2. In non-endemic areas, complete clearance of babesia organisms from the animal is the objective. Several aromatic diamadine pharmaceuticals are available to veterinarians.During recent years, horses and other equidae have become important in international commerce. Such commerce has focused attention on the international spread of certain infectious and communicable animal disease; among these is equine piroplasmosis (EP).Piroplasmosis is an infectious hemoprotozoan disease characterized by fever, anemia, icterus, and other signs arising from hemolysis caused by Babesia caballi or Babesia equi. The disease has been reported in horses, mules, donkeys, and zebras.8  相似文献

There are strong suggestions that equine stereotypies are connected to poor welfare and a suboptimal management and/or stabling environment. Different forms of equine stereotypic behaviors have been described. Crib biting, weaving, and box walking are considered the most prevalent. Several studies have been conducted to establish links between the underlying causes and potential function of such behaviors. Both experimental and epidemiological studies have indicated management factors specifically feeding practices, housing conditions, and weaning method as crucial in the development of stereotypies in stabled horses. Some neurological studies on equine stereotypy demonstrated some forms of central nervous system dysfunction as being associated with the performance of stereotypic behaviors. Different researchers hypothesized that the functional significance of stereotypies is that they reduce stress in captive environments and should thus be considered as a coping mechanism. In contrast, the owner's perspective is often that a stereotypic horse has a “stable vice” that needs to be stopped, and different kinds of methods have been developed to control or regulate stereotypic behaviors. However, if the stress-reducing hypothesis is correct, controlling stereotypic behaviors particularly by physical and surgical approaches without addressing the underlying causes is of great concern to the horse's welfare. Although there is ongoing uncertainty about the exact function, the growing knowledge about causation should be applied: under all circumstances prevention is better than cure.  相似文献

Equine tapeworm infection has gained increasing attention over the past few decades and a number of research studies have already been published. These focus primarily on the most common of the 3 tapeworm species, Anoplocephala perfoliata, although some new information has also been generated for the other two species, Anoplocephala magna and Anoplocephaloides mamillana. The preponderance of research studies have focused on development and validation of diagnostic techniques for tapeworm detection and the role of these parasites in equine gastrointestinal disease. Several diagnostic techniques have been found useful for diagnosis of A. perfoliata but each has its strengths and weaknesses. Egg counting techniques have been modified to achieve acceptable to good diagnostic performance but the trade‐off is often a more time‐consuming method. Validation studies indicate that these methods can reliably detect tapeworm burdens above 10 worms. Several enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) have been developed and made commercially available. These can generate useful information about tapeworm exposure on the herd level but are less reliable for individual diagnosis. Unfortunately, none of the available diagnostic techniques are useful for evaluating anthelmintic treatment efficacy. Coproantigen testing may find use as a future diagnostic modality but further characterisation is required. The large body of scientific evidence supports an association between A. perfoliata infection and certain types of equine colic, although some discrepancy exists between studies. Tapeworm surveillance and control should be considered as part of the overall parasite control strategy. When properly used, the currently available diagnostic tools can guide the veterinarian to make strategic decisions regarding tapeworm control.  相似文献

An online survey was conducted to establish horse owners' beliefs, attitudes and practices relating to the use of anthelmintic drugs. Out of a total of 574 respondents, 89 per cent described themselves as 'leisure riders', most of whom took part in a variety of activities including eventing, show jumping, dressage, hunter trials, hunting, driving, endurance and showing. Overall, respondents were generally aware and concerned about the issue of anthelmintic resistance. Less than 60 per cent of all respondents were comfortable with their existing anthelmintic programme, and 25 per cent would like to reduce the use of anthelmintics in their horses. Of all the respondents, 47 per cent used livery, and 49 per cent of those reported that the livery imposed a common anthelmintic programme for horses kept on the premises; 45 per cent of these respondents were not entirely happy with the livery yard's programme. Less than 50 per cent of all respondents included 'veterinary surgeon' among their sources of advice on worming.  相似文献

The relationship between ileal and colonic electromyographic motility patterns were investigated in six awake cats chronically fitted with subserosal electrodes implanted in the smooth muscles of the ileum and colon. Smooth muscle electrical activity (electromyogram) was recorded in both fed and fasted conditions under a 12-12 hours dark-light schedule. It consisted of electrical long spike bursts having two different patterns for each condition. Short sequences of three to five long spike bursts were propagated either aborally or orally from any part of the colon; they were most frequent during the interdigestive or fasting period and no relationship was observed between these long spike bursts and the electrical activity of the ileum. During the digestive or feeding period, the colonic activity was organized in long sequences of 10-15 long spike bursts, termed migrating spike bursts, which started near the caecal junction and propagated aborally to the distal colon. These migrating spike bursts were correlated with the ileal motility. This relationship demonstrated between ileum and colon after feeding is dependent upon the amount of food intake.  相似文献
