An exploratory case-control study was carried out in Spain in 2002/2003, involving 62 pig farms of different production systems to assess risk factors that, in association with PCV2 infection, induce postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS) expression. To achieve this objective two groups of farms selected according to their PMWS status were compared: "cases" (farms with clinical PMWS, n = 32) and "controls" (farms without clinical PMWS, n = 30). A filled-in questionnaire and 45 blood samples (15 sows, and two groups of 15 pigs of 12 and 20 weeks of age, respectively) were obtained from each farm. Additionally, two to three diseased pigs were necropsied and relevant tissues to diagnose PMWS collected when PMWS was clinically suspected ("case" farms). A statistical analysis to compare "case" versus "control" farms was performed with the variables obtained from the questionnaire (191 variables) and the serologic test results (20 variables). Data were analysed using conditional logistic regression with a nested n:m matched design taking into account the farm size. Three variables were found significant in the final model: two related to vaccination scheme and one to PCV2 seroprevalence in growing pigs. Vaccination of gilts against PRRSV increased the odds of PMWS expression and vaccination of sows against atrophic rhinitis was related to decreased odds of the disease; however, the possibility that those two factors could be spurious effects (due to the small sample size) or confounding variables cannot be ruled out. On the other hand, a higher prevalence of antibodies to PCV2 at 12 weeks of age was observed in pigs from "case" farms than in pigs from "control" farms. This result suggests that an earlier infection with PCV2 might be a risk factor for PMWS expression.  相似文献

Approximately 1500/6000 cattle farms that were depopulated during the foot and mouth epidemic in GB in 2001 had been repopulated and subjected to two unrestricted (herd considered free from bovine tuberculosis (bTB)) herd tests. Factors associated with herd breakdown(s) (HBD) and individual cattle reactor status at the second test were investigated. There were 96 HBD in total, with a 3-fold increased risk of HBD in herds that had had a HBD at the first test after restocking. Two mixed effect models were used to investigate factors associated with 324/246,060 reactor cattle at the second bTB test; 228 reactors were at confirmed HBD and 96 at unconfirmed HBD; 253 (79%) reactors at the second test were present and test negative at the first test. In confirmed HBD, the odds of cattle reacting were higher if the restocked farm had a history of bTB before 2001 and if the source and restocked farms were high frequency tested (HFT) farms (routine bTB tests at ≥1 per 2 years). Reacting cattle were more likely to have been born on the restocked farm before the first test after FMD and less likely to have been purchased from a low frequency tested (LFT) farm (routine bTB tests at 3-4 year intervals) after the first test compared with a baseline of cattle purchased from a LFT farm before the first test. Unconfirmed HBD at the second test was more likely when the first test was a confirmed HBD and when there was a history of bTB in the restocked farm. In contrast to confirmed HBD, cattle purchased from a LFT farm after the first test were at increased risk of reacting at an unconfirmed HBD at the second test. We conclude that a farm history of bTB suggests persistence of bTB on the farm. Confirmed tests indicate exposure to bTB for some time indicated by the increased risk from HFT source and restocked farms and a farm history of bTB. The risks for reactors are related to the farm and herd and duration of exposure to these risks. Therefore, the spread of bTB to na?ve herds would be reduced if farmers only introduced cattle known not to have been in herds and on farms exposed to bTB. Management of bTB on farms with bTB is complicated because there is undisclosed infection in cattle and environmental contamination.  相似文献

In a newly established farrow-to-finish farm (porcine reproductive and respiratory virus [PRRSV]-free, porcine circovirus type 2 [PCV-2]-infected), reproductive failure was seen seven months after population. The conception rate dropped from 89 to 51 per cent, and the abortion rate increased from 0.5 to 11 per cent. The following month, characteristic lesions of postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS) and elevated mortality were observed in weaned pigs. Laboratory examinations confirmed reproductive failure due to PRRSV and PMWS associated with apparent activation of the PCV-2 circulating in the farm. The herd was closed for replacement and a number of measures to improve hygiene, environmental conditions and feeding were applied. The abortion rate returned to preoutbreak levels four months after the beginning of the PRRS outbreak and the conception rate returned to normal four months later. Slower improvement was observed regarding the PMWS outbreak, with PMWS-related losses disappearing nine months after the detection of PMWS. Analysis of seroconversion profiles to PCV-2 and PRRSV during the outbreak and after its control indicated that while PRRSV was eliminated from sows and weaners by the control measures, the time of PCV-2 infection was unchanged and occurred at seven weeks of age during the PMWS outbreak as well as after its elimination. However, the elimination of PMWS from the herd coincided with increased levels of maternally derived antibodies to PCV-2 in one- to five-week-old pigs and faster serological responses to infection with PCV-2.  相似文献

The foot and mouth disease (FMD) epidemic of 2001 was used to investigate herd breakdown (HBD) with bovine tuberculosis (bTB) in totally restocked herds of cattle. By August 2004, 2941 restocked cattle herds, with cattle movements from before and after 2001, had been tested for bTB for the first time since restocking. A total of 6% (177) of these herds broke down at the first bTB test. A binomial logistic regression model with HBD (at least one reactor bovine) at the first test after restocking as the outcome was used to investigate risks associated with HBD. The final model contained three risk factors. There was an increased risk for HBD in restocked herds with every log increase in herd size with an OR=1.38 (CI 1.16-1.64) to a maximum OR of 10.75. When there was a history of bTB on the restocked farm before 2001 the OR, with CI not including unity, were 5.92, 4.63, 3.8 and 2.9 for last HBD in 2000, 1999, 1998 and 1997, respectively, indicating a persistence in increased risk for restocked herds from farms with a history of HBD in the previous herd before restocking, i.e. a different population of cattle. Finally, for every log increase in the number of cattle purchased from herds with a greater than biennial frequency of testing for bTB in the previous 8 years (i.e. perceived high risk herds for bTB) there was an OR=1.35 (95% CI 1.22-1.49). The maximum OR was 9.27. These results indicate that both introduction of bTB through the purchase of cattle from farms with a high perceived risk of bTB infection and persistence of bTB on the restocked farm, (not the farm's original herd), were associated with an increased risk of HBD in the newly formed herds after restocking.  相似文献

F18+ enterotoxigenic and verotoxigenic Escherichia coli (E. coli) are widespread and induce post-weaning diarrhoea and oedema disease, respectively. No commercial vaccine exists. Therefore, the F18 herd seroprevalence of 178 randomly selected pig-breeding farms in northern Belgium was evaluated by determining F18-specific IgG antibody titres in pooled sera of sows per breeding farm. This survey reported the first data concerning F18 herd seroprevalence and showed that F18+ E. coli seroprevalence was common in northern Belgium. Significantly more open pig-breeding farms were F18 seropositive (96.4%) compared to closed (88.8%). Furthermore, no clear association was determined between the F18 herd seroprevalence and the number of sows per breeding farm (rsp = 0.19), or with the number of fattening pigs per breeding farm (rsp = 0.17).  相似文献

Two epidemiological studies were conducted from August 1997 to May 1998: a case-control study to identify herd level risk factors for antibodies to Aujeszky's disease virus (ADV) in sows in the state of Yucatan, Mexico and a cross-sectional study to determine the prevalence of antibodies against ADV in fattening pigs. In the case-control study, data on herd management and biosecurity were obtained from all the 27 ADV known field-virus-seropositive farms (cases) and 62 randomly selected seronegative farms (controls) by questionnaire. Breeding animals of these seropositive farms had received a gE-deletion vaccine. In the cross-sectional study, 26 farrow-to-finish farms of the 27 seropositive farms were used and blood samples taken from 60 fattening pigs per herd (15 pigs for each stage of production). Serum samples were analyzed by the screening-ELISA and gE-ELISA tests. In the case-control study, three of the 15 risk factors were significant. Odds ratios for distance to the nearest farm (< or = 2.5km), not sampling for the detection of ADV and herds with origin of breeding animals within the state were 9.5, 18.1 and 8.7. In the cross-sectional study, 11 (42.3%) of the 26 sampled farms were seropositive to vaccine antibodies. None of the piglets were positive to antibodies against field virus risk--suggesting that the strategy of vaccinating only the breeding animals reduced the ADV infection of the piglets.  相似文献

Four herds of pigs were selected which had different degrees of clinical atrophic rhinitis and used different specific counter-measures. In two of them, the clinical signs occurred spasmodically and were slight. The sows, suckling pigs and growing pigs in all the herds were sampled for toxigenic Pasteurella multocida. In one of the slightly affected herds (herd D), the weaners were moved to a second farm for finishing. No toxigenic P multocida were found at the breeding farm, but 50 per cent of the large growing pigs were positive. It seemed that the organism had entered only at the finishing farm and that the mild clinical signs were due to the infection starting in older pigs than usual. In the second mildly affected herd, 47 per cent of the sows and 42 per cent of the growers were infected. Three toxigenic isolates from this herd produced as severe turbinate damage experimentally in specific-pathogen-free pigs as a stock pathogenic strain. Except in herd D, toxigenic P multocida were found in all the age groups of pigs sampled. However, the pattern of distribution of the organism within the herds was not obviously correlated with the severity of the disease. In a fifth herd there were obvious cases of clinical atrophic rhinitis, with marked turbinate atrophy, from which toxi-genic P multocida were recovered in abundance. Subsequently, the clinical disease disappeared and, despite extensive and repeated sampling, the organism was not found again.  相似文献

Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) is the essential infectious agent of postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS). Despite first sequencing studies did not find any association between PCV2 sequences and PMWS occurrence, recent works have suggested the opposite. In the present study, 87 open reading frame 2 (ORF2) sequences obtained from pigs with different clinical conditions and coming from farms with different PMWS status were analyzed. Results further confirmed the existence of two genogroups and the definition of two PCV2 genotypes (1 and 2) is proposed. All sequences included in genotype 1 came from pigs from PMWS affected farms, while all sequences obtained from non-PMWS affected farms corresponded to genotype 2. Moreover, infection of single pigs from PMWS affected farms harbouring both genotypes is described. Present results suggest that PCV2 genotype 1 may potentially be more pathogenic than PCV2 genotype 2.  相似文献

The clinical syndrome Postweaning Multisystemic Wasting Syndrome (PMWS) in pigs has emerged globally during the last decade. In October 2001, the first pig herd diagnosed with PMWS was reported in Denmark, and since then the number of herds diagnosed with PMWS has increased markedly. The etiology of PMWS is not well understood, but increased knowledge of the causal factors is prerequisite for applying preventive interventions. In this study we described the temporal (time of diagnosis), spatial (location of herds) and spatio-temporal pattern of Danish pig herds diagnosed with PMWS during the first two years after the first herd was diagnosed, and we tested for spatial and spatio-temporal clustering using scan statistics. The study population consisted of pig herds that during the study period (October 2001-September 2003) performed diagnostic submissions to the two major veterinary diagnostic laboratories in Denmark (6724 herds). Of these, 277 herds were diagnosed with PMWS. Two statistically significant spatial clusters of herds diagnosed with PMWS were identified. These clusters included 11% and 8% of the study herds, respectively. Within these two clusters the relative risk for a herd to be diagnosed with PMWS was twice as high as expected. One statistically significant spatio-temporal cluster was identified between February and May 2002. We discuss different hypotheses that could explain why pig herds diagnosed with PMWS were clustered both spatially and spatio-temporally, and conclude that the results support the hypothesis that PMWS is caused by introduction of a new, unidentified, pathogen into the Danish pig production.  相似文献

In 1987 we conducted a sero-epidemiological survey in the Murcia Region (South-East Spain) to discover the prevalence and spread of PRCV-infection among breeding pigs and farms and determine the association between herd size and geographical zone with PRCV-infection. The Murcia Region was divided into four geographical zones and the farms classified by size in four categories. The random sample was statistically representative of both the breeding stock and farms in each geographical zone. We analysed 6,000 breeding pigs from 480 farms. The immunological techniques employed were indirect ELISA and blocking ELISA. The prevalence (P +/- IC) of PRCV-seropositive breeding pigs and infected breeding farms was 14.53 +/- 0.89% and 21.87 +/- 7.83% respectively. On 55% of the infected farms, the prevalence of seropositive breeding pigs was 60-100%. PRCV-infection appears spread throughout the four geographical zones of the Murcia Region. However, a significant association (p less than 0.01) was observed between geographical zone and the prevalence of PRCV-infection. A herd size of greater than 50 breeding pigs had a greater risk (p less than 0.01) of PRCV-infection.  相似文献

Between March and July 1997, a devastating outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), serotype O, occurred in pigs in Taiwan. A total of 6,147 pig farms with more than 4 million pigs were infected, and 37.7 per cent of the pigs in Taiwan either died (0.18 million pigs) or were killed (3.85 million pigs). The epidemic reached its peak during the fifth week after it was first recognised. During the eighth and ninth weeks, a two-dose blanket vaccination programme was instituted which led to a large reduction in new outbreaks. Except for two cities, the whole of Taiwan was declared an FMD-infected zone. During the four months in which new farm outbreaks occurred, 21.7 per cent of the pigs on infected farms showed clinical signs, and there was an overall mortality of 3.95 per cent. During the early stages of the epidemic, the incubation period was as short as 24 hours and the case fatality rates for suckling piglets reached 100 per cent. The financial cost of the epidemic was estimated at US$ 378.6 million, including indemnities, vaccines, carcase disposal plus environmental protection, miscellaneous expenses, and loss of market value. Owing to the ban on exports of pork to Japan, it is estimated that the total economic cost to Taiwan's pig industry will be about US$ 1.6 billion.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the cattle—exposure factors associated with the risk of a bovine animal reacting to a bovine tuberculosis (bTB) skin test at a whole herd test. There were 148 study farms enrolled. These were located in six counties of the south west of England in an area considered endemic for bovine tuberculosis (bTB): 24% were restocked after foot and mouth disease (FMD) in 2001; all farms were located within the Randomised Badger Culling Trial (RBCT) area. Data on cattle on these farms were sourced from the bTB Vetnet database from 1996 to 2004 and from the British Cattle Movement Scheme database. Individual animal records were created that included data on whether or not an animal became a reactor at a full-herd bTB test between 1 June 2001 and 19 August 2004, their prior exposure to cattle with bTB (defined by presence at a bTB test where at least one reactor was detected), whether the animal was homebred, the farm history of bTB and the farm restocking status. Data from 144 farms were used, 4 farms had no data.Cattle were more likely to react to the bTB skin test when they had been present at a previous bTB herd test (or tests) where other cattle had reacted to the skin test. This positively correlated with age and the number of bTB tests an animal had had. Cattle on restocked farms were less likely to react to the skin test compared with cattle on continuously stocked farms. These results highlight the likely importance of exposure to infected cattle at a previous test as a source of infection to cattle that subsequently became reactors and suggest that there was a lower risk of exposure to bTB to cattle in newly formed herds.  相似文献

A study was conducted to examine the usefulness of a glycoprotein I (gI)-ELISA to monitor Aujeszky's disease virus infection in two vaccinated pig herds; the gI-ELISA can differentiate between pigs infected with Aujeszky's disease virus and pigs vaccinated against Aujeszky's disease with gI-negative vaccines. The two herds had been vaccinated with gI-negative vaccines for several years. The first survey, in September 1986, revealed that approximately 10 per cent of the breeding pigs in a large multiplier herd were seropositive for antibodies to gI of Aujeszky's disease virus, and it was decided to try to eliminate the virus from the herd by gI-ELISA testing and culling of gI-seropositive pigs. A one month quarantine period for incoming stock was established, and only gI-seronegative pigs were admitted to the herd. After two rounds of testing and culling the herd appeared to be free of wild-type Aujeszky's disease virus, and neither Aujeszky's disease virus nor antibodies could be detected either in 21 sentinel pigs placed on the farm or in 347 stillborn piglets or piglets that died shortly after birth. The herd probably remained free of Aujeszky's disease virus until the end of the 27-month period of monitoring except for two of 639 breeding pigs that were unexpectedly found to be positive in the gI-ELISA in November 1987. These sows were culled. A second breeding herd was monitored for antibodies to gI of Aujeszky's disease virus for two years. CASE HISTORY: Investigations were conducted to determine the cause of an acute, multi-farm outbreak of porcine respiratory disease that included diarrhoea and subsequent loss of body condition in affected pigs. A definition for post-weaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS) including both clinical and pathological features, previously developed for the pig industry in New Zealand, was applied to the current outbreak. In addition to self-reporting by owners of affected farms, local veterinarians, disease and epidemiology consultants, and animal health officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) were involved in conducting farm visits and submission of diagnostic specimens. CLINICAL FINDINGS AND DIAGNOSIS: Pathogens known to be endemic in the pig industry in New Zealand as well as likely exotic diseases were excluded as causative agents of the outbreak. Clinical signs including dyspnoea, diarrhoea, and rapid loss of body condition were consistent with the New Zealand case definition for PMWS. Interstitial pneumonia, pulmonary oedema, generalised lymph-node enlargement, and presence of porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) inclusion bodies were consistently identified in affected pigs. Classical swine fever virus (CSFv), Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSv), and Influenza virus were ruled out, using molecular and traditional virological techniques. Spread of the disease between farms was hypothesised to be facilitated by locally migrating flocks of black-backed seagulls. The original source of the disease incursion was not identified. DIAGNOSIS: Based on the consistent presence of circovirus-associated lesions in lymphoid tissues in combination with generalised enlargement of lymph nodes, histiocytic interstitial pneumonia, clinical wasting, and poor response to antibiotic therapy, a diagnosis of PMWS was made. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: PMWS should be considered in the differential diagnoses of sudden onset of respiratory dyspnoea, diarrhoea, and rapid loss of body condition in young pigs in New Zealand pig herds.  相似文献

Thirty-six farms in parishes in western England that had recently experienced herd breakdowns of bovine tuberculosis were surveyed for signs of badger activity and for husbandry practices relating to the access of badgers to the farm buildings and facilities. Signs of activity were detected within the farmyards and buildings of 14 of the farms and were associated with water troughs at pasture on two of them. Few of the farmers implemented practices to reduce contact between badgers and cattle. Stored cattle feed was freely accessible to wild animals in 88 per cent of the feed stores. Two badger carcases, and two of 66 samples of badger droppings, cultured positive for Mycobacterium bovis. Signs of badgers within farmyards were significantly positively associated with the number of badger setts and latrines in the immediate vicinity, but were not related to any recorded farm husbandry procedures.  相似文献

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) within Saudi Arabian dairy herds has been controlled for the past decade through vaccination. Data from 19 outbreaks on Saudi farms has suggested that the durability of these vaccines extended for 2.5 months, providing an 81–98% level of protection. Vaccination has nevertheless failed to prevent the establishment and sometimes persistence of the disease. This is probably because the highly contagious nature of FMD creates increasing levels of viral excretion during an outbreak, and the co-habitation in Saudi farms of affected/susceptible animals following diagnosis, predisposes the herds to re-infection. Pre-clinical excretion of the virus leads to the infection of additional in-contact susceptible animals prior to diagnosis, so the isolation of clinically infected animals does not guarantee a removal of infection. Saudi Arabian farms are subdivided into managed farm pens and isolation (away from the farm) of all animals in infected pens not only removes the infectious individuals showing clinical signs, but also those that are sub-clinical and excreting virus. Simulations suggest that removing all infectious animals from the herd significantly reduces the per cent infected in the herd.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the potential risk factors for PMWS at the individual pig level and assess the effect of the Pietrain paternal genetic background of the animals in a cohort study. The survey was set up in four PMWS-affected farms with 2 repetitions (batches) per farm. A representative sample of 60 pigs per batch, stratified according to the paternal genetic background (Pietrain: yes vs. no), was randomly selected after farrowing. The representative cohort was divided into 8 batches and the pigs were individually monitored from birth to slaughter. Survival analysis was used to determine the factors related to the time to PMWS. The litter-cluster effect was taken into account using the marginal Cox model (robust estimation of the covariance matrix) and the gamma shared frailty model which were compared.No protective effect of the Pietrain breed on the time to PMWS and the proportion of affected pigs in the offspring was found in this study. Piglets showing low circovirus type 2 (PCV2) titres at 7 weeks-old with no subsequent seroconversion and piglets from PCV2 negative sows were most likely to be affected by PMWS (HR=7.0 and 2.8, respectively). Active infection of the pregnant dams with parvovirus was related to an increased risk of PMWS in the offspring (HR=2.3). Neck injuries due to poorly performed injections in the dams were associated with an increased risk of PMWS with the marginal model (HR=2.1). Oxytocin injection (dams) during farrowing was protective against PMWS in the offspring (HR=0.6).  相似文献

High mortality in female pigs on breeding farms is a critical problem in the U.S. swine industry. The objectives of this study were to determine whether female pig mortality on Japanese commercial farms increased; to investigate correlations between the mortality and herd-management factors, especially herd size and lactation length; and to determine herd repeatability in female pig mortality. A five-year annual measurement data between 1999 and 2003 were abstracted from recording files of 113 farms in Japan. The year-effects on measurements were analyzed by using repeated measures data between 1999 and 2003 in mixed-effects linear models. The annual mortalities for female pigs in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003 were 4.93%, 5.25%, 5.40%, 5.32%, and 4.85%, respectively. The year-effect on the female pig mortality was not found for the five years. Neither herd size, lactation length nor other management factors were found to be consistently correlated with female pig mortality for the five years. The repeatability of the mortality was 36.5% on commercial farms. In conclusion, female pig mortality did not increase during these five years in Japan. Herd size and lactation length were not risk factors for female pig mortality.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of within-farm variability in the number of females mated per week during a 1-year period on annual breeding herd productivity in swine breeding herds and to apply statistical process control charts to measures of within-farm variability. DESIGN: Longitudinal study. SAMPLE POPULATION: 84 swine farms with a female inventory of 390 to 1,491 sows and gilts (mean, 761 females). PROCEDURE: As a measure of within-farm variability in a breeding herd, SD for the number of females mated per week during a 1-year period was evaluated. Two types of production records for 84 farms were evaluated. One file contained within-farm variability (SD) in mated females for each farm, and the second included annual productivity 19 weeks after week of mating. We also defined forewarning limits as mean +/- 2 SD, using a statistical process control chart. RESULTS: Larger within-farm variability in number of mated females was associated with lower annual measurements, such as fewer pigs weaned per mated female per year and lower farrowing rate. In addition, farms that did not have any weeks outside the forewarning limits for number of mated females produced more pigs weaned per mated female per year than those with 1 or more weeks of over- or underproduction. Furthermore, the number of weeks outside of forewarning limits was positively associated with within-farm variability in number of mated females. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: We recommend that farm managers determine a target range for the number of females mated per week to prevent large week-to-week variations in breeding herd operations.  相似文献
