Two trials examined genetic and environmental influences on muscle fiber type proportions. Trial 1 compared Polypay and Coopworth x Polypay male lambs either left intact or castrated early, mid or late in growth. Trial 2 compared Hampshire-sired lambs (females, early castrate wethers and late castrate wethers) from Suffolk x Coopworth dams and whiteface x Coopworth dams. Half the lambs in each trial were raised from weaning to 52 kg slaughter weight in drylot; the other half were reared to 41 kg on pasture before being finished in drylot. Analysis of longissimus tissue samples revealed no significant differences among rams, wethers and ewes in proportions of muscle fiber types. Early castration increased the proportion of alpha red fibers in Trial 1 (P less than .01) but not in Trial 2. Polypay lambs had a higher proportion of beta red fibers (P less than .05) than the Coopworth x Polypay lambs, but no differences were seen between the genotypes of Trial 2. Single-born lambs in Trial 1 had a 6% higher proportion of alpha white fibers (P less than .05) than twin-born lambs; however, this difference was not detected in Trial 2. Drylot lambs had a higher proportion of beta red fibers than pasture-reared lambs, the difference being 5% (P less than .01) in Trial 2. Muscle fiber type proportions were not found to be related to growth rate and carcass fatness, and no evidence of differential fiber transformation was found in this trial.  相似文献

Six ewe genotypes, generated by mating Coopworth (C), Polypay (P), and Suffolk (S) rams to Polypay and Coopworth-type (Ct) ewes, were exposed to Hampshire rams for spring lambing from 1986 through 1990. Data from 1,092 exposures and 1,044 resultant lambings were used to analyze reproductive traits and lamb growth rates. Overall conception rate averaged 95% and ranged from 93% for S x Ct ewes to 97% for P x Ct ewes. Mean litter size at birth averaged 1.63 and ranged from 1.45 for C x C ewes to 1.75 for S x P ewes. Ewes from P dams had higher mean litter size (P less than .01) than those from Ct dams (1.73 vs 1.54), but differences between sire breeds were not significant. Incidence of lambing assistance was similar for ewes producing single or multiple lambs. Lamb birth weight influenced the level of assistance rendered to single-bearing but not to multiple-bearing ewes. Lambing assistance was not related to lamb survival, probably because the high surveillance level minimized trauma before assistance was rendered. Incidence of required assistance declined over subsequent parities. Lamb birth weights were affected by ewe genotype and increased with increasing ewe age. Survival of single-born lambs averaged 94% and was not affected by dam genotype. Survival of twins averaged 85%, ranging from 79% for lambs from S x Ct ewes to 89% for lambs from P x P ewes. Suffolk-sired ewes produced the heaviest mean birth and weaning weights for both singles and twins. Coopworth-sired ewes weaned heavier single lambs but lighter twins than P-sired ewes.  相似文献

Fifty-one ewes, 50 wethers and 51 rams of Finn x whiteface or Suffolk x whiteface breeding were slaughtered at an average age of 271, 361, 459, 557 or 652 d to study changes in maturity characteristics with changes in age. When metacarpal epiphyseal cartilage (growth plates) ossifies with age, break joints on the distal end of the metacarpals fuse and the end of the bone then appears as a spool joint rather than as a break joint. This fusion occurs earlier chronologically in ewes than in rams or wethers. Most Finn x whiteface-cross ewes, which normally reach reproductive maturity earlier than Suffolk x whiteface-cross ewes, exhibited ossified metacarpal growth plates by 459 d of age; break joints of Suffolk x whiteface crosses were not fused until 557 d of age. Both breed groups of rams exhibited fused joints by 557 d of age, but only 3 of 10 wethers exhibited spool joints at 652 d of age. Microscopic examination showed that even in these three wethers the epiphyseal growth plate could still be detected. Yearling 2-yr-old classifications of sheep from teeth were not gender-dependent within the discrete age classes of this study. About half the sheep in each gender group were classified as yearlings at 459 d of age and about half in each group were classified as 2-yr-olds by 652 d of age. Stepwise multiple regression equations to estimate age of sheep in days were developed. Overall maturity, lean color and texture and rib bone maturity were the best carcass measures of maturity. Maturity scores for characteristics of the break joint did not enter any of the equations studied. When eye lens weight was included in equations with the best measures of carcass maturity, accuracy of estimates for age of sheep was improved.  相似文献

Sixty-four white-faced rams and wethers were dressed with the aid of a commercial pelt puller. The effects of age, castration, and season on difficulty of pelt removal and pelt damage were evaluated. Lambs were divided into two age groups (5 and 12 mo) within gender (ram and whether) and season (spring and fall). A greater force (P less than .05) was required to remove pelts from rams than from wethers in both 5- and 12-mo-old groups. Older lambs slaughtered in the fall required more force (P less than .05) to remove their pelts than did those slaughtered in the spring, but differences by season did not exist for 5-mo-old lambs. The difference between rams and wethers in percentage of live weight that was closely shorn pelt weight was not significant (P greater than .05). The area of grain crack in the flank expressed as a percentage of total area of the skin was lower (P less than .05) for skins from 5-mo-old lambs and ram lambs than it was for skins from 12-mo-old lambs and wether lambs, respectively. Factors involved in difficulty of pelt removal in ram lambs included crosscut shoulder weight, fat firmness, and carcass weight. Difficulty of pelt removal in wether lambs was best predicted by including crosscut shoulder weight and bodywall thickness in multiple regression equations.  相似文献

Targhee x Hampshire lambs (average BW 23 +/- 1 kg) were used in two experiments to determine the effects of finishing on concentrate with an anabolic implant or forage grazing after concentrate feeding on growth, organ and viscera weights, and carcass tissue accretion. In Exp. 1 and 2 lambs were penned by sex and assigned for slaughter at initial (23 kg), intermediate (37 kg), or end BW (ewes, 47.7; wethers 50.4 kg). From 23 to 37 kg BW, lambs were fed all-concentrate diets in drylot (DL) or grazed on alfalfa (ALF). Experiment 1 was a 2 x 2 factorial with 28 lambs; factors were wether vs ewe lambs and unimplanted vs DL implanted with trenbolone acetate-estradiol benzoate. There were no differences in organ and viscera weights due to implant status. However, ADG (P < .03) and lean gain (P < .02) were greater for implanted than for unimplanted wethers (507 vs 357 g and 1,314 vs 656 g, respectively). Ewes did not respond to the implant. Fat accretion was not affected by implantation. Experiment 2 was a 2 x 3 factorial with 42 lambs; factors were wether vs ewe lambs and drylot during growing and finishing phases (DL-DL) vs drylot during growing and alfalfa grazing during finishing (DL-ALF) vs alfalfa grazing during growing and finishing phases (ALF-ALF). In Exp. 2, ADG of DL-DL lambs was greater (P < .01) than ADG of DL-ALF or ALF-ALF lambs. Lambs on ALF-ALF had smaller (P < .05) livers and rumen/reticulum weights but heavier (P < .04) kidney, omasum, small and large intestine, and cecum weights than those on DL. In Exp. 2, DL-ALF and ALF-ALF lambs had overall hindsaddle lean gain equal to those on DL-DL with less mesenteric fat and 100 g less separable fat. Finishing lambs on alfalfa reduced fat accretion without decreasing lean accretion, whereas trenbolone acetate implants for lambs fed concentrate increased BW gain and lean accretion without affecting fat accretion.  相似文献

Ewes in two trials were given either a high (H) or a low (L) level of premating nutrition for 19 wk followed by 6 wk of either H or L postmating nutrition to examine effects on reproductive performance. Trial 1 ewes were 5- to 8-yr-old Polypays and Trial 2 ewes were 3-yr-old Polypay and Coopworth x Polypay crosses. Ewes given L nutrition premating were either immunized with androstenedione-7-carboxyethylthioether:human serum albumin (also known as ovandrotone or Fecundin) in (diethylamino)ethyl-dextran adjuvant (Trial 1) or flushed for 3 wk premating (Trials 1 and 2) to enhance ovulation rates. All ewes were synchronized for mating in both trials. Trial 1 premating treatments created a difference of 10 kg in BW and 1.1 in condition score units between H and L ewes preflushing; flushing halved the BW difference. Ovulation rates averaged 2.58 and were similar for H, L-flushed, and L-immunized (LI) ewes; however, both conception rate and litter size were lowest for immunized ewes. Among both twin and triple-ovulating ewes, highest mean litter size was produced by H ewes, followed in order by L and LI ewes. High postmating nutrition increased BW by 6 kg vs slight weight loss in L ewes, but postmating treatments did not affect litter size of either twin or triple ovulators. The H and L premating groups of Trial 2 differed by 18 kg and 2.2 condition score units preflushing. The H ewes exhibited higher ovulation rates (overall mean = 2.63) but lower conception than the L ewes to synchronized estrus. Litter size averaged 2.15 for H ewes vs 1.82 for L ewes. Among both twin and triple ovulators, L ewes produced fewer lambs than H ewes.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

In two separate 2 x 2 factorial arrangements, 69 male, crossbred lambs were allotted randomly to the following treatments: 1) nonimplanted (NI) rams, 2) implanted (I) rams, 3) NI wethers, and 4) I wethers. In Trial 1, 36 lambs were allotted to treatment groups at birth (n = 9) and I lambs were implanted with 12 mg of zeranol between 1 and 3 d of age and again at weaning (average age of 62 d). Lambs were slaughtered at three time-constant end points of 78, 93, and 107 d on feed postweaning (average age of 155 d). Rams grew faster postweaning, were more efficient in their feed conversion, were heavier at slaughter, and had lower numerical yield grades than did wethers (P less than .05). Implanted lambs tended (P = .08) to grow faster and were (P less than .05) more efficient in their feed conversion than NI lambs. Rams produced heavier (P less than .05) trimmed subprimal shoulders, loins, and legs and had (P less than .05) a higher percentage of their carcass weight in the subprimal shoulder than did wethers. During Trial 2, NI rams (n = 8), I rams (n = 8), NI wethers (n = 8), and I wethers (n = 9) were allotted to treatment groups, and I lambs were implanted at average ages of 14, 55, and 98 d. After weaning, lambs were weighed every 14 d and were slaughtered 7 d after reaching a minimum weight of 50 kg (average age of 148 d).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Evaluations of steer and heifer progeny from a diallel mating design of Simmental, Limousin, Polled Hereford and Brahman beef cattle over 5 yr are presented. Traits evaluated included final weight, hot carcass weight, ribeye area, 12th rib fat thickness, marbling score, yield grade, dressing percentage and percentage of kidney, pelvic and heart fat. Progeny of Simmental sires were heavier at slaughter than those with Brahman sires (P less than .05), but no differences were found for carcass weight. Dressing percentage was higher for Limousin crosses compared with progeny of other sire breeds (P less than .05). Similar results were found for dam breeds, except that progeny of Limousin dams had heavier carcasses with a higher dressing percentage (P less than .05) than Brahman crosses. Crosses of Limousin and Simmental had larger ribeye areas (P less than .05) compared with calves of the other breeds. Progeny of Polled Hereford dams had higher marbling scores and were fatter than progeny of dams of other breeds (P less than .05). Heterosis estimates were significant for all Brahman crosses for final weight, carcass weight and ribeye area, but these contrasts were negligible for other traits. Estimates of general combining ability were positive and significant for Simmental for final weight, carcass weight, ribeye area and marbling score and were significant and negative for Limousin for final weight, fat thickness and yield grade. Maternal values were generally small.  相似文献

Lamb growth, survival and carcass characteristics were compared for progeny of either 1/2-Suffolk, 1/2-Rambouillet (Western) ewes or 1/2-Suffolk, 1/4-Rambouillet, 1/4-Finnsheep (1/4-Finn) ewes produced over 3 yr in three different management systems. System 1 lambs were born in late fall and fed to slaughter on a concentrate diet. System 2 lambs were born in January and February and grazed pure stands of alfalfa or ladino clover after weaning. System 3 lambs were born in March and April and remained with their dams on native bluegrass-white clover pasture throughout the grazing season. Lambs were slaughtered as males reached 55 kg and as females reached 50 kg. One-half of the males in System 1 were left intact; all males in Systems 2 and 3 were castrated. Lamb survival did not differ among systems. Lambs from yearling 1/4-Finn ewes had higher survival rates than lambs from yearling Western ewes, but at older ewe ages, progeny of the ewe groups did not differ in survival. Lambs in System 1 grew fastest (mean lifetime gains of 310 +/- 4 g/d) and were youngest at slaughter (156 +/- 3 d), and lambs in System 3 were oldest at slaughter (234 +/- 2 d). System 2 lambs differed considerably among years in growth rate and slaughter age (mean slaughter ages of 191, 230 and 193 d across years), primarily in response to differences in rainfall. Lifetime gains and slaughter ages of lambs did not differ between ewe breeds. Ram lambs grew 15% faster than wethers and were leaner. Differences among systems in carcass traits were small. System 1 lambs tended to be fattest and System 2 lambs leanest. Progeny of 1/4-Finn ewes had higher subjective scores for carcass fatness (e.g., feathering, flank fatness) and conformation but did not differ from progeny of Western ewes in objective measures of fatness (e.g., backfat, yield grade).  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to determine the effects of supplementing ruminally degradable intake protein (DIP) or ruminally undegradable intake protein (UIP) on N balance (Exp. 1; n = 6 wethers; initial BW = 48.7 +/- 4.6 kg) and site and extent of digestion (Exp. 2; n = 5 wethers; initial BW = 36.9 +/- 3.1 kg) in whiteface wethers consuming (as-fed basis) 69% blue grama and 31% love grass hay (mixture = 7.5% CP, 73.0% NDF, 36.0% ADF [DM basis]). Treatments were 1) no supplement (Control), 2) a supplement (219 g/d, as-fed basis) low in UIP (70 g/d of CP; 24.8 g/d of UIP), and 3) a supplement (219 g/d, as-fed basis) high in UIP (70 g/d of CP; 37.1 g/d of UIP). Both experiments were replicated 3 x 3 Latin square designs, with identical feeding and supplementation. Wethers had ad libitum access to the forage mixture and fresh water, and received supplement once daily. In Exp.1, forage intake (percentage of BW) was greatest (P = 0.04) for control, but total DMI (g/d) was greatest (P = 0.05) for lambs consuming supplement. Apparent total-tract OM digestibility was numerically greater (P = 0.11) for supplemented wethers than for controls, whereas total-tract ADF digestibility tended (P = 0.08) to be greater for control wethers. Lambs fed supplements consumed and retained more (P < or = 0.01) N (% of N intake) compared with controls, but no difference (P = 0.22) was observed between low and high UIP treatments. Similar to Exp. 1, forage intake (percentage of BW) tended (P = 0.06) to be greater for control than for supplemented wethers in Exp. 2. Ruminal NDF digestibility was 16.3% greater (P = 0.02) for supplemented wethers than for controls. Postruminal NDF and N digestibilities were greatest (P < or = 0.03) for controls, but apparent OM digestibility did not differ among treatments at all sites. Duodenal N flow was greatest (P = 0.05) for high UIP and least for control wethers. Nonmicrobial N flow was greater (P = 0.02) for high UIP compared with low UIP or controls. Control wethers had greater (P = 0.05) microbial efficiency. Ruminal ammonia concentration tended (P = 0.08) to be greatest for wethers fed low UIP and least for controls, with high-UIP wethers having intermediate ammonia concentrations. Results from these experiments suggest that in lambs fed low-quality forage there was no difference in apparent total-tract digestion or N balance (percentage of N intake) between lambs fed supplements that had the same CP but differed in the proportion of UIP and DIP; however, supplementing protein (regardless of UIP:DIP ratio) to wethers consuming low-quality forage increased N balance.  相似文献

Objectives were to estimate effects of sire breed (Dorset, Finnsheep, Romanov, Texel, and Montadale), dam breed (Composite III and northwestern whiteface), mating season (August, October, and December), ewe age (1, 2, and 3 yr), and their interactions on reproductive traits of F1 ewes. A total of 1,799 F1 ewes produced 3,849 litters from 4,804 exposures to Suffolk rams during 35-d mating seasons over 3 yr. Ewes were weighed at breeding. Conception rate and ewe longevity (present or absent at 42 mo of age) were determined. Number born and litter birth weight were recorded, and number and weight at weaning and 20 wk of age were analyzed separately for dam- and nursery-reared litter mates. Total productivity through 3 yr of age for each ewe entering the breeding flock was calculated as the sum of 20-wk weights for dam- or nursery-reared lambs. Interactions of sire breed x mating season, sire breed x ewe age, and mating season x ewe age were generally significant, whereas interactions of sire breed, mating season, and ewe age x dam breed were seldom detected. Interactions of sire breed x mating season were often due to changes in rank as well as magnitude, indicating the importance of matching sire breed to a specific mating season. The number born to Dorset-, Texel-, and Montadale-sired ewes was not affected by dam breed; however, Finnsheep-sired ewes out of northwestern whiteface dams were more prolific than Finnsheep-sired ewes out of Composite III dams, and the opposite situation existed for Romanov-sired ewes. Least squares means of sire breeds (P < 0.001) for total productivity of dam-reared lambs were 98.5, 103.5, 106.9, 124.6, and 154.9 kg/ewe entering the breeding flock for Texel, Dorset, Montadale, Finnsheep, and Romanov, respectively. Superior reproduction of Romanov-sired ewes was due to greater conception rate and prolificacy for each mating season and ewe age, as well as greater ewe longevity. Total productivity of F1 ewes by Composite III dams (125.6 kg) was greater (P < 0.001) than for ewes born to northwestern whiteface dams (109.7 kg), and the effect of mating season increased (P < 0.001) from August to October to December. Litter weight at 20 wk of age of 2- and 3-yr-old ewes was similar but greater (P < 0.001) than for 1-yr-old ewes. Experimental results provide comprehensive information about the appropriate use of these breeds in crossbreeding systems to meet specific production-marketing objectives.  相似文献

Ram lambs were selected from a total of 1206 lambs in 8 industry Coopworth ram breeding flocks. Eight rams were selected randomly (one from each flock), 8 were selected on the basis of a low live weight-adjusted ultrasonic backfat thickness (lean) and 8 for a high post-weaning growth rate (PW gain). Rams from a Coopworth line specially selected and bred for low ultrasonic backfat (lean selection) were also included in the progeny test in which the rams were single sire mated to 1.5 year old Coopworth ewes. Birth and weaning weights were recorded for a total of 474 female and 371 male progeny. The males (progeny of 31 sires) were slaughtered between January and April at an average hot carcass weight (HCW) of 12.56 kg and carcass growth and carcass fatness parameters recorded. The carcass composition data were analysed using the allometric equation by covariance on HCW. The adjusted mean values of carcass water content were significantly higher for the progeny of the lean selection rams (7.58 kg) than forthe other 3 sire classes (7.49, 7.46 and 7.41 for the lean, PW gain and controls respectively) indicating that they were leaner. Other indicators of carcass fatness also revealed marked differences between the sire classes. There were also marked effects of slaughter date with lambs slaughtered earlier being leaner (after adjustment for HCW) than lambs slaughtered later in the season. The results indicate that selection of sires on the basis of ultrasonic backfat thickness or post weaning live weight gain can be expected to result in the production of leaner lamb carcasses.  相似文献

The objectives of this experiment were to assess effects of animal age and castration on activities of calpain I, calpain II, and calpastatin in sheep skeletal muscle. Ten newborn male lambs (2.9 kg), six weaned wethers (23.2 kg), six weaned rams (22.2 kg), six market wethers (55.4 kg), and six market rams (60.2 kg) were slaughtered and samples of biceps femoris were taken for assay of calpain I (micromolar calcium-dependent proteinase), calpain II (millimolar calcium-dependent proteinase), and calpastatin. Preweaning weight gain was similar for rams and wethers; however, postweaning ram growth exceeded (P less than .05) that of wethers. Ram biceps femoris weights at market were greater than those of wethers (P less than .05). Irrespective of age or gender, activity of calpain II was two- to threefold greater than that of calpain I. Muscle calpastatin activity was severa fold higher than calpain I and II activities. Activities of calpains and calpastatin declined (P less than .05) between birth and weaning. A portion of these losses were due to a dilution effect caused by accumulation of muscle proteins. Neonatal attenuation of calpain activities may underlie age-related attenuation of fractional rates of muscle protein degradation. Although ram muscle growth exceeded that of wethers, no differences (P greater than .05) in activities of muscle calpains or calpastatin were detected between these two groups at weaning or at market weight. Hence, castration did not influence lamb muscle growth by altering muscle calpain or calpastatin activities.  相似文献

Six ewe genotypes, generated by mating Coopworth (C), Polypay (P), and Suffolk (S) rams to P and Coopworth-type (Ct) ewes, were exposed to Hampshire rams for spring lambing from 1987 through 1990. Data from 1,013 exposures and 973 resultant lambings were used to analyze reproductive traits and cumulative ewe productivity over 4 yr. Ewe body and fleece weights were also analyzed. Ewes from S sires weaned the heaviest lambs and ewes from P sires weaned the largest number of lambs, resulting in similar total weight of lamb weaned per ewe mated. Coopworth-sired ewes weaned the least total weight of lamb per ewe mated. Ewes weaning twins produced 54% more total litter weight per ewe than those weaning singles. Annual ewe survival averaged 95%, ranging from 93% for S x P and C x P ewes to 97% for P x Ct and C x Ct ewes. When cumulative number and weight of lamb produced was assessed on the basis of all ewes starting the trial, P-sired ewes were highest, followed in order by daughters of S and C sires. Suffolk-sired ewes (67 kg) were 13% heavier than daughters of P rams and 19% heavier than daughters of C rams. Adjustment of lamb production for ewe metabolic body size resulted in C-sired ewes being more efficient than the heavier S-sired ewes. Coopworth-sired ewes produced 32% more wool than ewes sired by the other two breeds. Differences in wool production between ewes weaning one or two lambs were small.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of finishing lambs on concentrate (C) or by grazing ryegrass forage (F) to slaughter end weights of 52 (N) or 77 kg (H) on carcass characteristics and organoleptic properties. This experiment included 64 Targhee x Hampshire lambs (average BW = 24 +/- 1 kg) in a 2 x 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments to compare wethers vs. ewes, C vs. F, and N vs. H slaughter weights. No interactions (P > 0.10) were observed between gender and other main effects. Hot carcass weight and dressing percent were greater (P < 0.001) for C- than for F-fed lambs. Backfat thickness also was greater (P < 0.001) for lambs fed C than for those fed F. Moreover, USDA lean quality score and USDA yield grades were higher (P < 0.001) for C- than for F-fed lambs, as well as for lambs slaughtered at H vs. N market weights. There was a higher (P < 0.005) incidence of off odors and off flavors in cooked muscle from F- vs. C-fed lambs, and also from H vs. N slaughter-weight lambs. The heavy C-fed lambs had juicier (P < 0.001) meat than other treatment combinations. Cooked meat from C-fed lambs received higher (P < 0.001) overall acceptability scores. Concentrate-finished lambs produced fatter carcasses and more palatable meat than forage-finished lambs; however, forage finishing allowed for slaughter at heavier weights without excessive fat deposition.  相似文献

Copper oxide wire particles (COWP) have been used to reduce infection of Haemonchus contortus in hair breed lambs in southeastern USA without signs of copper toxicity. However, copper sensitivity among breeds and regions varies. The objective was to determine the effectiveness and safety of COWP in lactating Polypay ewes and their offspring grazing alfalfa/bluegrass pasture in a rotational grazing system. Mature Polypay ewes were administered 0, 0.5, 1, or 2 g (n=8 or 9/dose) COWP approximately 60 days after lambing in mid-July 2005. Their offspring were administered 0 (n=6), 0.5 or 0.75 g (n=9), 1 or 2 g (n=6) COWP 2 weeks later in late July. The primary gastrointestinal nematode was H. contortus (70%). Between Days 7 and 35, FEC were greater in 0 and 0.5 g COWP groups compared with ewes administered 2 g COWP (COWP x day, P<0.004). PCV decreased in all groups of ewes between Days 0 and 21 (day, P<0.001). Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activity, a measure of liver copper levels, and body weight was similar among groups of ewes. FEC decreased within 7 days in COWP-treated compared with untreated lambs and remained low throughout experiment (COWP x day, P<0.05). PCV increased in COWP-treated lambs between Days 7 and 35 and decreased in untreated lambs between Days 0 and 21 (COWP x day, P<0.009). AST activity was similar among groups of lambs. Administration of 2 g COWP to ewes prevented a rise in FEC, but a dose of 0.5 g was ineffective as an anthelmintic. Administration of all doses of COWP to lambs decreased FEC and increased PCV compared to untreated lambs. There were no signs of copper toxicity in ewes or lambs. Alternative suppression of H. contortus infections may be necessary in ewes, but COWP was effective in H. contortus management for lambs.  相似文献

Milk production and lamb growth were characterized in 118 multiparous, 3- to 7-yr-old Rambouillet, Columbia, Polypay, and Suffolk ewes under spring sage range and high mountain meadow grazing from 28 to 98 d postpartum. Daily milk yield as measured by the lamb suckling weight differential technique did not differ (P greater than .05) among breeds, although milk production of Suffolk ewes tended to be higher than that of the other three breeds. Within the Rambouillet, Columbia, and Polypay breeds, total estimated yield of ewes with twins was 13 to 17% higher than that of ewes with singles, whereas in the Suffolk breed, suckling twins increased total milk yield 61% over that of ewes with singles. Twin lambs induced a larger differential in dam milk production in late lactation (70 to 98 d) than in earlier lactation (28 to 70 d). Number of lambs did not influence milk protein, Ca, or P content (P greater than .05). Fat levels in colostrum and 4-d milk were elevated 14 and 20%, respectively, in ewes suckling twins compared with ewes suckling singles. Under range conditions, Suffolk ewes suckling single or twin lambs lost more BW (12 and 21% of 4-d postpartum body weight, respectively) than Rambouillet (4 and 7%), Columbia (5 and 8%), or Polypay (8 and 8%) ewes. Correlation coefficients of milk production and lamb growth rate were positive and significant (P less than .05) up to 56 d of age. Growth rate was less closely associated with milk production for twin than for single lambs.  相似文献

Administration of growth promotants with estrogenic activity via hastening closure of the growth plate could have an economic impact on lambs because closure results in ovine carcasses being classified as yearlings. Twelve wether lambs approximately 12 mo old were given silastic implants filled with estradiol-17 beta and allotted randomly to be slaughtered 30, 60, 90, or 220 d after implantation to determine time of growth plate closure in relation to date of implanting. Seven comparable wethers not implanted served as controls. Four wethers implanted at 2 mo of age and slaughtered 220 d later also were included. Implanted wethers had serum concentrations of estradiol averaging 13.9 pg/ml over the 220-d implant period; controls averaged 2.7 pg/ml. Estradiol implants increased carcass maturity scores but fat deposition was not altered. Growth plate widths decreased (P less than .05) as wethers grew older and implants were in place for longer periods of time. Metacarpal growth plates in 12-mo-old lambs were completely ossified 220 d after implanting, but control wethers and wethers implanted at 2 mo maintained growth plate widths. Neither metacarpal nor metatarsal bone lengths differed (P less than .05) between control and implanted wethers. Growth plate ossification was not complete until 570 d of age in implanted lambs, even though bone length had stopped increasing by 408 d. Therefore, even though estradiol and other growth stimulants with estrogenic activity increase rate of ossification of the metacarpal growth plate, bone length or mature size is not limited.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Data were collected on 130 intact male lambs fed diets based on roughages supplemented with fish meal, soybean meal, or corn gluten-blood meal and slaughtered at 43 kg live weight. A nonsupplemented group served as a control. The lambs represented Romanov (R), Finnsheep (F), a new breed developed in Canada (DLS), Coopworth (C), and Suffolk (S), three first crosses of DLS with R, F, and Booroola Merino (B), and their backcrosses to DLS. Supplemented lambs consumed 16 to 22% less (P less than .05) silage than control lambs. Average daily gains of lambs fed fish meal (226 g) and corn gluten-blood meal (217 g) were higher and feed conversion ratio (4.99 and 5.11) lower than that of lambs fed soybean meal (189 g and 5.48) or control (186 g and 5.76) diets (P less than .05). The cost of feed per kilogram of gain or per kilogram of lean produced was similar in the four treatments but was between C $.23 and .65 cheaper in the protein-supplemented groups when the number of days to reach slaughter weight was considered. The effect of diet on carcass traits and meat quality were minimal. Meat of lambs fed the three protein supplements was less juicy than that of control lambs. With a few exceptions, most of the significant differences among genetic groups in growth, carcass, and sensory traits were mainly between prolific (R and F) and meat-type breeds (C, S, and DLS). Gain in weight was highest in S lambs (199 g/d), but F and R first crosses were the youngest at slaughter (196 and 198 d). The F lambs had higher dressing and kidney fat percentages than meat-type breeds. The DLS lambs had the largest longissimus muscle area (14.0 cm2), whereas C had the smallest (10.7 cm2). The B crosses had larger longissimus muscle area than R and F crosses. The R lambs had more lean and less fat in the 12th rib, whereas C lambs had the lowest lean and a high bone percentage. The toughest and the most tender roasts were those of R and B crossbred lambs, respectively. Roasts from F lambs had the most intense lamb flavor.  相似文献
