The ECVP/ESVP summer school in veterinary pathology: high-standard, structured training for young veterinary pathologists

This article describes the ECVP/ESVP Summer School in Veterinary Pathology, a new annual two-week European training facility established by the European College of Veterinary Pathologists (ECVP) in collaboration with the European Society of Veterinary Pathology (ESVP). The aim of the Summer Schools is to provide Europe-wide, harmonized, top-standard theoretical and practical post-graduate training for veterinarians specializing in veterinary pathology. In particular, it aims to support trainees in veterinary pathology in their individual preparation for the ECVP certifying examination. Ultimately, it aims to provide young pathologists with the skills and knowledge necessary to participate in international, high-quality research and the tools for applying international standards to their own research and for independent study for the ECVP certifying examination, even if they do not work in comparable academic environments and do not have the same level of local support and training. The ECVP/ESVP Summer Schools take place in European countries, with local organization from a university department of veterinary pathology. Each event comprises modules provided by internationally recognized specialists in their specific fields of expertise on different organ systems, diseases of specific species, specific techniques, and specific topics relevant to pathology, forming a cycle of four events to cover all major topics. Every two years a mock exam is organized as a tool to monitor individual progress in preparing for the ECVP certifying examination.     

Karl Dammann--remembrance of an important veterinarian

Carl Dammann' 150th anniversary of birth and 75th anniversary of death was in 1989. Therefore Dammann's activities as the last "Direktor" of the School of Veterinary Medicine in Hannover is worth to be documented briefly. Dammann studied Veterinary Medicine and Human Medicine. After that he taught at the School of Agriculture in Proskau and in Eldena (Poland) and later at the School of Veterinary Medicine in Hannover. In the position as the "Direktor" of the School he initiated some important reforms. The present location of the School in Hannover bases on Dammann's activities. In 1899, the Veterinary School of Hannover changed from the "Clever Tor" to the present place at the "Bischofsholer Damm".     

University of Edinburgh veterinary expeditions: 1966 to 1986

Since 1966, teams of new graduates from the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies have organised eight veterinary research expeditions to Africa, tropical America and the Seychelles. The expeditions are now a regular feature of the school's activities. It is now possible to look back, learn and advise on future expeditions regarding timing, research and funding.     

ANAESTHESIA FOR DENTAL TRFATMENT IN SMALL ANIMAL PRACTICE

Several methods of anaesthetising dogs and cats employed in the Department of Veterinary Surgery, Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies for dental treatment are described and their suitability assessed in 1,200 dental cases. The therapeutic procedures for which anaesthesia was indicated are also briefly described.     

Remembrances of Jacques Jenny, DrMedVet 1917–1971

Editor's note : The holding of the 19th Annual Meeting of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in Philadelphia in conjunction with the Centennial Celebration of the School of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania provides an opportunity for reflection. Dr. Jacques Jenny, Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the School, was Chairman of the Organizing Committee that gave rise to the American College of Veterinary Surgeons on December 16,1965, and was elected as first President of the College. The solid foundation and high ideals that the Organizing Committee established are in large part responsible for the success of the College. Dr. Jenny died on November 20, 1971. Those of us fortunate to have known him personally realize the immense gap that his premature death left. For those that did not know him, I hope that this article permits some appreciation of the contributions of Dr. Jenny the comparative orthopedic surgeon, as well as of the very special human qualities of Jacques Jenny the man. The first author, Dr. Mark Allam, was Professor of Surgery and Dean of the School of Veterinary Medicine during most of Dr. Jenny's career at the University of Pennsylvania, and was the first Chairman of the Board of Regents of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. The second author, Dr. David Nunamaker, is the first holder of the Jacques Jenny Professorship in Veterinary Orthopedics at the University of Pennsylvania.

The Veterinary School is divided into three major departments. These are Physiology and Anatomy, headed by Professor R. E. Munford. Veterinary Clinical Sciences, headed by Professor E. D. Fielden and Veterinary Pathology and Public Health headed by Professor B. W. Manktelow. Heads of Departments are largely responsible for academic leadership and administration of research within the groups of disciplines resident in their departments.     

Criteria for the appointment for a full professorship in the course of history at the School of Veterinary Medicine of Dresden/Leipzig

First the history of the appointment for a full professorship is described in the various stages of development of the School of Veterinary Medicine Dresden. Then the significance of the habilitation degree introduced in 1903 is discussed in terms of the development of the School of Veterinary Medicine Dresden and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Leipzig, respectively. Commentary follows on the current discussion about the discontinuation of further development of the habilitation and possible alternatives to it, the Ph.D. and the assistant professorship.     

Development of a health and safety program at the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine

An accident prevention and zoonotic disease control program at the School of Veterinary Medicine, Louisiana State University, was developed by a Health and Safety Committee comprised of members from all instructional departments. The program incorporated safety educational input during the basic, preclinical, and clinical years; a standardized accident reporting procedure; rabies vaccination, with serologic evaluation; a blood serum bank; and recommendations for future control procedures.     

Trends in veterinary clinical and fundamental pharmacology: past and future in The Netherlands

Veterinary pharmacology has undergone a gradual development in the Netherlands during this century. Starting from a historical perspective the paper aims to provide an overview of future trends and important issues in the area of veterinary pharmacology and toxicology. It is pointed out that this discipline comprises several subdisciplines as the comparative aspect of both, pharmacology and toxicology, is inherent to veterinary medicine which has to address a broad variety of animal species. Thus, the comparison of drug effects, side effects, and drug disposition as well as the comparison of the species-specific susceptibility to xenobiotics are obvious challenges in this discipline. Several areas in clinical pharmacology are highlighted to indicate future research needs. Finally, the principles of Good Veterinary Practice are presented as the 'golden standard' in veterinary clinical pharmacology.     

Rebar Named Dean at Purdue

veterinary Practice Publishing Company extends its congratulations to Dr. Alan H. Rebar on his appointment as Dean of Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine, effective July 1, 1996. Dr. Rebar served for many years as the editor-in-chief of Veterinary Clinical Pathology.     

Advances in equine practice management.

As equine practices move forward in the 21st century, we feel increasing pressure to manage our businesses like business people. This requires outside expertise, in-house business-trained managers, and continuing education on various aspects of practice life. Aside from the AAEP, several other organizations are providing continuing education in management, including the Association of Veterinary Practice Managers, the Veterinary Management Institute offered at Purdue University Krannert Graduate School of Management, the American Animal Hospital Association through (The Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine's) on-line practice management course, and the University of Illinois Equine Practice Management modules.     

Public health education at the University of California, Davis: past, present, and future programs

This article reviews the history of public-health education at the University of California, Davis, from the inception of the Master of Preventive Veterinary Medicine Program in the School of Veterinary Medicine through the creation of the Master of Public Health Program offered jointly by the Schools of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine. The long history of collaborative teaching and research between the schools, as well as the university's close proximity to and relationship with numerous university-affiliated and state public-health agencies, has created remarkable opportunities for novel and creative public-health education. The university is already anticipating the approval of a School of Public Health on its campus, which will create even more educational opportunities in both human and veterinary public-health disciplines. Given the projected shortfall of veterinarians entering such fields, the opportunity of a novel Doctor of Public Health degree program specifically suited to the needs of veterinary medicine is also discussed as a means of addressing this shortage.     

Current status of canine cancer registration - report from an international workshop

This is a report from a workshop on canine cancer registration hosted at the Norwegian School of Veterinary Science in Oslo in August 2010. The aim is to present a summary of the current efforts to gather data on canine (and feline) cancer based on information from participants at the workshop. A definition and classification of cancer registries is provided together with an inventory of the databases presented. Particular focus is placed on the distinction between population-based and hospital-based cancer registries. Future challenges are discussed and issues relating to harmonization of diagnostic coding, defining the population-at-risk, individual animal identification and data quality are included. Finally, other groups working within the field of cancer registration in companion animals are encouraged to contact the authors for future collaboration.

Obstetrical observations by the cow doctor W. Munter (1767-1838) from Goudswaard (Prov. South-Holland)

Before the time that certified veterinarians from the Veterinary School of Utrecht became available, assistance with difficult parturitions of farm animals often was given by experienced cow doctors. Such a cow doctor was W. Munter, who practised at one of the islands of South-Holland. He had obtained a license for veterinary practice after being examined by the socalled Leyden Commission, in 1808 installed by King Louis Napoléon. In 1829 Munter communicated several of his case stories to Alexander Numan, director of the Veterinary School. These are edited and commented here. They shed light on the obstetrical problems Munter met in his practice and on the manner he solved them, and also on his views on the backwardness of many of his clients. It is concluded that Munter had a good practical knowledge and that he worked with accuracy.     

New fundamental order of the School of Veterinary Medicine Hanover

On June 29, 2000, the Council of the School of Veterinary Medicine Hannover (TiHo) passed a new fundamental order. Upon termination of the current terms of office of the rector and the chancellor in September and at the end of the year 2001, respectively, a school management will be established with a longer term of office and a new type of School Council. However, the new fundamental order must still be approved by the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture. This change has been made necessary by radical restructuring affecting all universities in Lower Saxony: the transformation to a state enterprise with the concomitant introduction of a global budget demands full-time management. This is a step of historical significance, for this change in the fundamental order puts an end to a tradition of 87 years at the School of Veterinary Medicine Hannover under a constitutional rectorate. The following essay describes the most important changes and explains their necessity.     

A flexible approach to training veterinarians in public health: an overview and early assessment of the DVM/MPH dual-degree program at the University of Minnesota

As a result of the growing need for public-health veterinarians, novel educational programs are essential to train future public-health professionals. The University of Minnesota School of Public Health, in collaboration with the College of Veterinary Medicine, initiated a dual DVM/MPH program in 2002. This program provides flexibility by combining distance learning and on-campus courses offered through a summer public-health institute. MPH requirements are completed through core courses, elective courses in a focus area, and an MPH project and field experience. Currently, more than 100 students representing 13 veterinary schools are enrolled in the program. The majority of initial program graduates have pursued public-practice careers upon completion of the program. Strengths of the Minnesota program design include accessibility and an environment to support multidisciplinary training. Continued assessment of program graduates will allow for evaluation and adjustment of the program in the coming years.

Diaphragmatic hernia. Analysis of fifty-six cases in dogs and cats

A review of fifty-six cases of diaphragmatic hernia in the dog and cat is presented. These were admitted to the University of Glasgow Veterinary School between January 1972 and August 1978. Fifty-three of these cases were treated surgically but only twenty-nine survived to be discharged from the hospital. The reasons for the low survival rate are discussed in detail.
