Summary Heteranthera limosa seeds were buried in flooded and in non-flooded soil and exposed to natural seasonal temperature changes in Lexington, Kentucky, USA. Seeds exhumed after various periods of burial ranging from 2 to 36 months were tested for germination under both flooded and non-flooded conditions. Seeds were dormant at maturity in September and became non-dormant during winter. Seeds buried in non-flooded soil during winter germinated to higher percentages and over a wider range of temperatures when tested under flooded conditions (in light) during spring and summer, than did those buried in flooded soil during winter. Thus, the water regime associated with rice culture (non-flooded in winter and flooded in summer) is optimal for dormancy-break and germination of H. limosa seeds. A portion of the buried seeds exhibited an annual dormancy/non-dormancy cycle, whereas others had a conditional dormancy/non-dormancy cycle. Regardless of the type of cycle, seeds buried in non-flooded soil retained the ability to germinate in light at high temperatures under flooded conditions throughout the summer. Thus, seeds potentially can germinate at any time during the growing season, whenever rice fields are flooded. Flooding fields during winter and/or sowing rice relatively early in the growing season may help in establishing rice before seeds of H. limosa germinate. 相似文献

Weeds have negative impacts on crop production but also play a role in sustaining biodiversity in agricultural landscapes. This trade‐off raises the question of whether it is possible to promote weed communities with low competitive potential but high value to biodiversity. Here, we explored how weed communities respond to different vineyard management practices in South Africa's Western Cape, aiming to identify whether any specific practices are associated with more beneficial weed communities. Eight weed community characteristics representative of abundance, diversity and functional composition were used as indicators of competitive potential and biodiversity value. We explored how these responded to farm management strategy (organic, low input or conventional) and weed management practices (herbicides, tillage, mowing or combinations of these) using ordination and mixed models. Mown sites were associated with weed communities of high biodiversity value, with higher weed cover in both winter and summer, higher diversity and more native weeds. Mowing also promoted shorter weeds than either tillage or herbicides, considered to be less competitive with grapevines. However, high summer weed cover may be problematic where competition for water is critical, in which case tillage offers a method to limit summer weed cover that did not adversely affect diversity or native weeds. In contrast, herbicide‐treated sites had characteristics indicative of a lower biodiversity value and higher potential for competitiveness with few native weeds, lower diversity and relatively tall, small‐seeded weeds. Mowing in winter combined with tillage in spring may thus optimise the biodiversity benefits and production costs of Western Cape vineyard weeds. 相似文献

The diversity and composition of floating weed seed communities were surveyed in 27 sites across the main rice-growing regions in China with the aim of better understanding weed seed dispersal via irrigation water. Seed of 74 species, belonging to 20 families, were identified from floating matter on the water surface in lowland rice fields. Thirty-five species from three families: Poaceae (15), Asteraceae (11), and Polygonaceae (9), accounted for 47% of all species identified. Species with seed maturing in the summer accounted for 64% of the weed seed and their mean relative abundance was 0.74. Species richness, Shannon–Wiener index and Pielou evenness index were significantly different among the floating weed seed communities. The diversity of weed seed communities in the Yangtze river valley was higher than that in other sites, and some sites were dominated by only a few weed species, such as Beckmannia syzigachne , Alopecurus aequalis , A. japonicus , and Polypogon fugax. At all sites, the dominant weed seeds reflected the dominant weed species in the previous crop. The 27 sample sites of weed seed communities can be clustered into two groups on the basis of previous crop, either lowland rice or sites with previous crops of winter fallow, winter wheat or oilseed rape. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) revealed that irrigation frequency, previous crop, and latitude, but not soil type or longitude, significantly affected species composition. The numbers of floating weed seed species were high in lowland rice fields; composition was affected by previous crops and irrigation frequency. Filtering irrigation water and collecting and removing floating weed seeds from the water surface could be integrated into weed management practices to control weeds in lowland rice fields. 相似文献

Downy mildew of pearl millet, caused by Sclerospora graminicola, is a devastating disease, resulting in high economic losses in the semi-arid regions of the world. Recently, induction of host plant resistance using biotic and abiotic inducers are included among disease management practices as an eco-friendly approach. Unsaturated fatty acids are considered as a new generation of plant disease resistance inducers. In the present study, six unsaturated fatty acids, viz. docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), arachidonic acid (AA), linolenic acid, linoleic acid and oleic acid, all originally detected in the zoospores of
S. graminicola,were applied to seeds of susceptible cultivars of pearl millet to examine their ability to protect against downy mildew under greenhouse and field conditions. In greenhouse experiments, EPA and AA induced a maximum of 78.6% and 76.5% protection, whereas linoleic acid, DHA and linolenic acid provided up to 66.3%, 61.2% and 24.5% protection, respectively. Oleic acid was not effective in protecting pearl millet (only 5.1% protection). A time interval of four days between treatment of seeds and challenge inoculation was required to obtain optimum protection. Plants raised from treated seeds and challenge inoculated at the tillering and inflorescence stages showed enhanced resistance, resulting in higher grain yield compared to untreated plants of the same cultivar. Chitinase activity was found to be higher in susceptible seedlings of pearl millet after treatment with the fatty acids and pathogen inoculation than in seedlings only inoculated with the pathogen. This indicates that host defence responses are activated and thus that induced resistance is involved in the protection observed. The role of unsaturated fatty acids as activators of resistance against downy mildew in pearl millet is discussed. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: Straight‐chain, saturated fatty acids (particularly C8, C9 and C10) have some known behavioral effects on insects such as mosquitoes, and were tested in combination for potential repellency/antifeedant activity in bioassays against three significant muscoid flies of medical/veterinary importance: houseflies, horn flies and stable flies. RESULTS: Mixtures of C8, C9 and C10 (1:1:1; 15% total actives in formulation) were highly repellent to houseflies and horn flies at or below 1 mg formulation cm?2. Repellency time varied from < 1 day for houseflies to usually at least 3 days for horn flies. Individual longer‐chain‐length fatty acids were tested, and C11 repelled houseflies for up to 5–8 days, while C12 lasted 2 days. Minimum statistically significant repellency levels of the C8, C9 and C10 mixture (3 h after application) against horn flies were 0.06–0.12 mg cm?2. A liquid formulation of the 15% C8, C9 and C10 mixture in a silicone oil carrier (at 2.8 mg AI cm?2) was highly repellent against hungry stable flies in a blood‐feeding membrane bioassay for at least 8 h. CONCLUSION: The low toxicity and reasonable activity and persistence of these carboxylic acids make them good candidates for development as protective materials against pest flies in livestock settings. Survival, germinability and fungal colonization of dimorphic achenes of the annual weed Galinsoga parviflora buried in the soil 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Galinsoga parviflora (Asteraceae) is a widespread annual weed that produces capitula containing both disc achenes with pappus and ray achenes without pappus. The latter are dispersed within a winged structure formed by capitulum bracts. We buried both achene types in an agricultural soil to be exhumed regularly to investigate whether they differed in survival, germinability and fungal colonization in the soil seedbank. Ray achenes remained viable longer than disc achenes, with different loss rates for the achene types. In both cases, loss rate was very high for the first 10 months, and then loss rates for the achene types tended to level off and even converge by the end of the observation period. The percentage of remaining viable disc achenes was always c. 10–15% lower than that of the ray achenes, except on the first and last sampling dates. Germination percentages for viable ray and disc achenes before burial and after exhumation were not statistically different during most of the observation period, except for that between 100 and 200 days of burial (mid‐autumn–winter). There, germination of disc achenes reached 26.4% after 126 days of burial, whereas germination of ray achenes was close to zero. In addition, after 779 days, the germinability of ray achenes was 21.3%, whereas it was 0% for disc achenes. Surface‐disinfected viable disc and ray achenes had low infection rates (0–15%) for both fungi and bacteria during the observation period. The fungal and bacterial infection peaks for both achene types were asynchronous. In general, the expected difference (lower infection rate for ray achenes) was not observed for fungal or bacterial infection. 相似文献

小花棘豆(Oxytropis glabra)是多年生有毒草本植物,在退化的草场上可成为优势杂草,扁蓿豆(Melilotoides ruthenica)、草木樨状黄芪(Astragalus melilotoides)、沙芦草(Agropyron mongolicum)为草原常见优质牧草。以小花棘豆为供体植物,分别研究其不同浓度的根、茎叶水浸液对上述3种受体植物种子发芽的影响。结果表明:根、茎叶水浸液对受体植物发芽率、发芽指数、胚根与胚芽长均有不同程度的化感作用,两种水浸液对3种植物发芽指数的化感效应均强于发芽率,对胚根长的化感效应均强于胚芽长。供体植物的不同部位对不同受体植物的化感效应有明显的差异,茎叶水浸液的化感效应强于根水浸液,综合效应结果显示:3种受体植物对两种水浸液化感作用的敏感性依次为:沙芦草草木樨状黄芪扁蓿豆。不同质量浓度根、茎叶水浸液对受体植物的影响表明,浓度越大化感效应越强,高质量浓度(≥10 mg·m L~(-1))水浸液抑制作用显著,低质量浓度水浸液(≤5 mg·m L~(-1))化感作用不显著。 相似文献

Genotoxic effects of Chlorfenvinphos and fenbuconazole were examined by using mitotic index, mitotic phase, chromosomal abnormalities, 2C DNA content and Comet assay on the root meristem cells of Allium cepa. The roots were treated with 10, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 ppm concentrations for 24 and 48 h. The results indicated that Chlorfenvinphos and fenbuconazole significantly decreased the mitotic index in all treatments when compared with their controls. The percentages of mitotic phases have changed. Chlorfenvinphos and fenbuconazole significantly increased the abnormal cell frequency at all concentrations and treatment periods when compared with their controls. Different abnormal mitotic figures were observed in all mitotic phases. Among these abnormalities were stickiness, anaphase bridges, c-mitosis, laggards, and micronucleus. These pesticides remarkably depressed the 2C DNA content in the root meristems of A. cepa. The genotoxicity of chlorfenvinphos and fenbuconazole in A. cepa root cells was analyzed using comet assay, which allows the detection of single strand breaks. In all concentrations, chlorfenvinphos and fenbuconazole induced a significant increase in DNA damage. Additionally, it was also researched to determine if there is a relation between the amount of DNA and the DNA damage and a regression analyses was conducted. When the data that was accumulated via comet analysis from A. cepa root tip cells that are treated with type chlorfenvinphos and fenbuconazole, was compared to the data that was acquired as the result of the measurement of 2C DNA amount, a relation with negative correlation was found, (respectively, r = −0.80 and r = −0.82).
