The purpose of this study was to determine the diagnostic value of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) in oral masses of dogs. Nineteen dogs underwent clinical, MR and CT examinations. Eleven malignant and ten non-malignant masses were evaluated. Osteosarcoma was the most commonly found malignant oral mass and gingival hyperplasia was the most commonly found benign mass. The results showed that MRI provided more accurate information regarding the size of the masses and invasion of adjacent structures although MRI and CT show similar accuracy in assessment of bone invasion. Calcification and cortical bone erosion was better seen on CT images. Whereas contrast-MRI provided useful additional information, contrast-CT had no added benefit. In general, oral masses located in the caudal mandible, oropharynx and maxilla are better evaluated using MRI, once the histological type has been verified.  相似文献

A 3 yr old, 70 kg (154 lbs) female spayed Great Dane developed gingival hyperplasia after treatment of systemic hypertension with amlodipine 7.5 mg q 12 hr for 16 mo. Physical examination was unremarkable except for systemic hypertension and severe gingival hyperplasia. Amlodipine was replaced with hydralazine (0.72 mg/kg [0.32 mg/lb]). Nine months later, gingival hyperplasia was nearly resolved and hypertension was well controlled. Calcium channel blockers such as amlodipine are a rare cause of gingival hyperplasia in the canine patient. Recognition of this side effect is important because a full recovery can be achieved when the offending agent is removed.  相似文献

Objective— To investigate the development of gingival hyperplasia in dogs after renal transplantation and administration of microemulsified cyclosporine A (MCsA).
Study Design— Experimental study.
Animals— Healthy adult mongrel dogs (n=5).
Methods— As part of study on renal transplantation, dogs administered MCsA (20 mg/kg/day), azathioprine, and prednisolone to prevent graft rejection were monitored for development of gingival changes. Prednisolone was discontinued after 3 months. MCsA dose was adjusted to maintain whole blood trough concentration of 400–700 ng/mL. Gingival change was evaluated by weekly examination and photodocumentation, and gingival biopsy for histopathology was performed at 28 weeks.
Results— One dog was lost because of acute graft rejection. Gingival hyperplasia developed in 3 of 4 dogs. The earliest gingival changes occurred in the interdental papillae at 20 weeks after transplantation. On histopathology, the underlying connective tissue was thickened and contained increase numbers of fibroblasts and inflammatory infiltrates.
Conclusions— Long-term immunosuppression with an MCsA-based treatment likely induces substantial gingival hyperplasia when therapeutic, immunosuppressive blood levels of MCsA were maintained for 32 weeks.
Clinical Relevance— MCsA is used for immune-mediated diseases and preventing rejection after transplant in dogs. MCsA blood levels, and gingival hyperplasia should be monitored by routine examination of the interdental papilla in dogs administered MCsA for long periods.  相似文献

The ability of computed tomography (CT) to distinguish malignant from nonmalignant splenic masses was evaluated in 21 dogs with 24 masses. CT scans of the abdomen were performed pre- and postintravenous contrast medium administration before splenectomy or euthanasia. Splenic masses were evaluated objectively based on Hounsfield units (HU) and volume. Subjective criteria included location within the spleen (head, body, or tail), margination, homogeneity, and attenuation compared to the remaining splenic parenchyma. Characteristics of malignant and nonmalignant masses were compared. The nonmalignant masses were divided into splenic hematomas and nodular hyperplasia for further analysis. Fourteen (58.3%) of the masses were nonmalignant; 10 (41.7%) were malignant. Malignant splenic masses had significantly lower attenuation values, measured in HU, than nonmalignant splenic masses, on both pre- and postcontrast images (P<0.05). On postcontrast images, there was a significant difference in attenuation characteristics among all three subsets of splenic masses (malignant, hematoma, hyperplasia), with nodular hyperplasia having the highest HU values (90.3), hematomas having intermediate HU values (62.5), and malignant splenic masses having the lowest HU values (40.1). A receiver operator characteristic curve of postcontrast medium HU values revealed 55 as the best threshold value to distinguish malignant from nonmalignant masses, with those less than the threshold value being malignant. Abdominal CT is a useful diagnostic imaging modality for evaluation of focal canine splenic masses, with a significant difference in imaging characteristics between malignant and nonmalignant masses.  相似文献

Splenic hemangiosarcoma has morphological similarities to benign nodular hyperplasia. Computed tomography (CT) texture analysis can analyze the texture of images that the naive human eye cannot detect. Recently, there have been attempts to incorporate CT texture analysis with artificial intelligence in human medicine. This retrospective, analytical design study aimed to assess the feasibility of CT texture analysis in splenic masses and investigate predictive biomarkers of splenic hemangiosarcoma in dogs. Parameters for dogs with hemangiosarcoma and nodular hyperplasia were compared, and an independent parameter that could differentiate between them was selected. Discriminant analysis was performed to assess the ability to discriminate the two splenic masses and compare the relative importance of the parameters. A total of 23 dogs were sampled, including 16 splenic nodular hyperplasia and seven hemangiosarcoma. In each dog, total 38 radiomic parameters were extracted from first-, second-, and higher-order matrices. Thirteen parameters had significant differences between hemangiosarcoma and nodular hyperplasia. Skewness in the first-order matrix and GLRLM_LGRE and GLZLM_ZLNU in the second, higher-order matrix were determined as independent parameters. A discriminant equation consisting of skewness, GLZLM_LGZE, and GLZLM_ZLNU was derived, and the cross-validation verification result showed an accuracy of 95.7%. Skewness was the most influential parameter for the discrimination of the two masses. The study results supported using CT texture analysis to help differentiate hemangiosarcoma from nodular hyperplasia in dogs. This new diagnostic approach can be used for developing future machine learning-based texture analysis tools.  相似文献

A Bernese mountain dog was evaluated because of a gingival mass, multiple abdominal masses, and a pulmonary mass. Malignant histiocytosis was diagnosed based on cytological examination of splenic and bone marrow aspirates and histological examination of a bone marrow biopsy and the gingival mass. The case demonstrates that malignant histiocytosis is difficult to diagnose due to the variety of histiocytic disorders.  相似文献

SUMMARY Gross and histopathological changes and serum thyroxine levels were determined in 10 heifers fed an exclusive diet of Leucaena leucocephala from 10 months of age until slaughter, 23 months later. Normal ovarian activity and mating were observed during a 7-month mating period. Cataracts, goitre, lingual epithelial ulceration and gingival atrophy were present at slaughter. Only one of the heifers was pregnant. Histologically, severe vacuolation and disruption of lens fibres and focal hyperplasia of lens epithelium were present. Both follicular hyperplasia and colloid accumulation were found to varying degrees in the thyroid glands and serum thyroxine levels were higher than in a comparable group of animals not fed L. leucocephala. Morphologically normal trophoblast was present in the uteri of 6 animals even though no embryo or foetus was present. Embryonic death and resorption may have been due to the anti-mitotic effect of mimosine or the goitrogenic effect of DHP.  相似文献

Cryptosporidium spp. infection was associated with aural-pharyngeal polyps in three iguanas (Iguana iguana). All iguanas were presented for masses protruding from the ear canal, and the disease was characterized by a chronic clinical course. The masses consisted of nests of cystic glands surrounded by abundant fibrous connective tissue and lined by hyperplastic cuboidal to pseudostratified columnar epithelium that was moderately to heavily colonized by cryptosporidial organisms. Electron microscopy revealed that the majority of organisms were trophozoites.  相似文献

An 11‐year‐old miniature horse gelding presented for a left maxillary facial swelling and surgical removal of 2 ovoid mineralised masses located near the tooth roots of the left maxillary second and third premolars. Preoperative radiographs were performed to triangulate the location of the calcified masses for removal, and an oral examination revealed that the left maxillary second premolar was nonvital with multiple feed‐packed pulp exposures. Both the radiographs and oral examination indicated that the mineralised masses were associated with the nonvital second premolar. Therefore, the tooth was extracted intraorally, and the masses were removed via a maxillary trephine dorsal to the extracted tooth. Both masses were submitted for histopathology, which diagnosed the masses as true cementomas (cementoblastomas) with adenomatous hyperplasia of the surrounding nasal glandular tissue.  相似文献

A chordoma was removed from the tail base of a 6.5-year-old ferret (Mustela putorius furo). A nodule was observed in the area of tumor development when the ferret was purchased at 3 months of age. Although the nodule did not enlarge for 2 years, slow, steady growth of the tumor was observed for 4 years before surgical removal. Eight months after removal of the chordoma, the ferret developed 2 cutaneous masses. One was adjacent to the vulva, close to where the chordoma had been removed from, whereas the other was in the nasofacial region. After 4 months of slow growth, both masses were removed and both were histologically and immunohistochemically consistent with chordoma. Over the next 8 weeks, additional masses developed in the facial, maxillary gingival, and scapular regions. Enlargement of the gingival mass caused dysphagia, and the ferret was euthanized. Although a necropsy was not performed, these additional masses had a clinical appearance and texture that was similar to the 2 previously removed cutaneous chordomas. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of a ferret coccygeal chordoma that developed close to the base of the tail. Ferret chordomas have been reported previously to metastasize to the subcutis overlying the tumor. However, this is the first report of a ferret chordoma that metastasized to a location distant to the primary site of neoplasm development. Cell proliferation indices did not predict this metastatic behavior. It is hypothesized that the long clinical period before removal may have predisposed this neoplasm to metastasis. Observations from this case suggest that chordomas in ferrets may have metastatic potential and so should be removed promptly.  相似文献

The adrenal glands of 56 dogs ranging in age from birth to 13.6 years were examined for a determination of normal zonal and cellular morphology patterns throughout development, maturity and aging. Routine light microscopic techniques as well as lipid and cholesterol staining were used. The zona arcuata is described as developing between the fibrous and cellular layers of the capsule forming the cortical blastema layer, a zona biproliferativa. It is proposed that both centrifugal and centripetal migration of cortical parenchyma can result. The formation of accessory nodules is described as compensatory hyperplasia. Histomorphometric analysis revealed growth in the zona fasciculata to be by hyperplasia and the zonal volume percentages to be arcuata, 27%; fasciculata, 50%; reticularis, 23%.  相似文献

Muscular pseudohypertrophy was diagnosed in the cervical musculature of a full-term crossbred Simmental fetus delivered by fetotomy. Only head and cervical regions were submitted for pathologic examination; the rest of the fetal body was reportedly normal. The neck musculature of the fetus was markedly deformed by 23 cm and 18 cm in diameter, firm, spherical masses that consisted of enlarged and pale left splenius and right serratus ventralis cervicis muscle, respectively, covered by intact skin. Additionally, lipomatous masses were present within the cervical vertebral canal, compressing the spinal cord. Microscopically, the prominent muscular enlargement was due to massive adipose and fibrous connective tissue replacement of atrophic muscle. Focal myelodysplasia and astrocytosis affecting the grey matter was detected in the mid-cervical region of the spinal cord, accompanied by degeneration in the ascending and descending tracts of the remaining cord segments. Abnormal spinal cord development as a result of severe spinal cord compression by the lipomatous masses within the spinal canal leading to replacement of muscle by fat and fibrous tissue was considered to be the cause of the muscular malformation in this fetus.  相似文献

Eleven adult sheep of various breeds were examined due to inspiratory dyspnea. Fiberoptic examinations conducted in 8 of the sheep revealed masses to be obstructing the nasal passages. Identification of the masses through histopathologic examination showed 7 to be adenocarcinomas, 1 a papillary adenoma, and 4 were cases of glandular hyperplasia with lymphoplasmacytic infiltration (nasal polyps). One ewe had both an adenocarcinoma and a polyp. Surgical removal of the masses was attempted on 6 of the sheep. Four of the 6 surgically-treated sheep have survived between 2 mo. - 2 years without recurrence of the obstruction.  相似文献

Vascular obstruction of the hindlimbs was diagnosed clinically in 15 horses, and was characterized at necropsy in eight of those horses. The condition was identified as an incidental post mortem finding in two additional horses. The principal clinical signs in affected horses were progressive exercise intolerance and hind-leg lameness. At post mortem the oldest lesions were located at the aortic quadrifurcation and in the distal portions of the femoral and internal iliac arteries, and consisted of partially or completely occlusive masses of well-organized and well-vascularized fibrous tissue, occasionally containing hemorrhagic or degenerate areas. Proximal to these organized masses, large unorganized thrombi were often present. In the region of the occlusive masses, the tunica intima was obliterated, except for the internal elastic lamina which usually remained intact. The tunica media was largely unaffected, except for ischemic necrosis of the media in greatly distended arteries or under thick plaques. The pathogenesis of the lesions is unresolved. The lesions may result from organization of strongyle-related thromboemboli or the inciting cause may be progressive enlargement and organization of spontaneously developing fibrous intimal plaques. Hypercoagulability of the blood may have contributed to thrombosis in one mare with the nephrotic syndrome. Routine examination of the aortic quadrifurcation and its major branches is recommended in order that subclinical changes may be detected and the natural history of the lesion elucidated.  相似文献

A 13-year-old male Setter-Springer crossbred dog was presented with signs of acute peritonitis three days after blunt abdominal trauma. In abdominal radiographs, a bubbly accumulation of gas in the central and cranioventral parts of the liver silhouette and mild peritoneal effusion were seen. At laparatomy, firm, necrotic, nodular hepatic masses containing gas were found to be ruptured. The histologic diagnoses were hepatic adenoma with hepatic necrosis and nodular hepatic hyperplasia. The pathogenesis of hepatic abscessation and the radiographic differential diagnosis of extraluminal abdominal gas are discussed.  相似文献

This article describes 10 cases of paranasal sinus masses in Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis canadensis). Among 21 bighorns that were examined from 11 herds in Colorado, 10 individuals (48%) from 4 herds (36%) had masses arising from the paranasal sinuses. Affected animals included 9 of 17 females (53%) and 1 of 4 males (25%), ranging in age from approximately 2 years to greater than 10 years. Defining gross features of these masses included unilateral or bilateral diffuse thickening of the respiratory lining of the maxillary and/or frontal sinuses, with abundant seromucinous exudate in the affected sinus cavities. Defining histologic features of these masses included chronic inflammation and proliferation of mesenchymal and epithelial cells of the mucosa and submucosa. Epithelial changes included hyperplasia of mucosal epithelium, hyperplasia of submucosal glands and ducts, and neoplasia (adenocarcinoma). Mesenchymal changes included submucosal myxedema, submucosal fibroplasia/fibrosis, bone destruction, and neoplasia (myxomatous fibroma). Specific immunohistochemistry and polymerase chain reaction for Jaagsiekte sheep retrovirus and enzootic nasal tumor virus were performed with negative results.  相似文献

It is extremely rare to have multiple spontaneous proliferative lesions in young adult rats. Here, we report the occurrence of different proliferative lesions in multiple tissues of a 7-week-old female rat in a 1-week repeated toxicity study. Grossly, multiple white patches and nodules in the bilateral kidneys, femoral and subcutaneous masses, and a nodule in the liver were observed. Renal lesions were diagnosed as renal mesenchymal tumors. One of the femoral subcutaneous masses was diagnosed as an adenolipoma consisting of mammary epithelial cells and mature adipocytes. The other femoral and abdominal subcutaneous masses were diagnosed as lipomas consisting of mature adipocytes. The liver nodule was diagnosed as non-regenerative hepatocellular hyperplasia, which was characterized by the proliferation of slightly hypertrophic hepatocytes. In the cauda equina, the growth of enlarged Schwann cells around the axon was observed, and this lesion was diagnosed as a neuroma.  相似文献

Submandibular and/or disseminated zygomycosis (mucormycosis) was diagnosed in 3 feeder pigs from 2 farrow-to-finish farms. Affected pigs were stunted and unthrifty. Each pig had a large unilateral submandibular granuloma replacing the mandibular lymph node on the affected side. Two pigs had disseminated lesions. One had an abscess on the serosa of the stomach; another had abscesses scattered throughout the liver and mesenteric lymph nodes. Impression smears were made of several masses and stained with blue-black ink. Examination of smears by light microscopy revealed coarse, infrequently septate, irregularly branching, mucoraceous fungi typical of a Zygomycete. Histologic examination of the submandibular masses revealed granulomas containing large numbers of mixed inflammatory cells, including giant cells. Mesenteric lymph nodes and liver abscesses had necrotic cores surrounded by fibrous capsules infiltrated by mixed inflammatory cells. Hyphae of a mucoraceous fungus were scattered throughout all masses. The 2 pigs submitted alive had marked serum hypoproteinemia, including hypoglobulinemia.  相似文献

Hepatic toxicosis caused by copper accumulation has been reported in most domestic species, as well as multiple small exotic mammals, including ferrets, fruit bats, and sugar gliders. The purpose of this study was to determine the signalments, clinical presentations, and histologic findings associated with hepatic copper accumulation in sugar gliders based on post-mortem histologic findings and retrospective analysis of reported antemortem clinical signs. Sugar gliders with histologic evidence of various hepatopathies were identified within the Northwest ZooPath archive. Sections of formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded hepatic samples were stained for copper, and copper deposition was graded semiquantitatively. The prevalence of copper accumulation in the evaluated hepatopathies was 28%. Copper deposition was seen in all individuals with icterus and non-ataxia neurologic signs. Grossly, individuals with hepatic masses and nodules were 5.50 times more likely to have hepatic copper accumulation. Sugar gliders with biliary hyperplasia were 16.20 times more likely to have copper accumulation while all individuals with cholestasis had hepatic copper accumulation. The results of this study indicate that hepatic copper accumulation is frequently identified in post-mortem evaluation of sugar gliders with hepatopathy. Copper accumulation is frequently noted in individuals with icterus, neurologic abnormalities, hepatic masses, biliary hyperplasia, and cholestasis. This study details the prevalence of hepatic copper accumulation in sugar gliders and illustrates associations between copper hepatotoxicosis and other hepatic diseases.  相似文献

This report documents 2 cases of branchioblastomas in koi carp (Cyprinus carpio). Macroscopically, both cases were characterized by well-demarcated, pale red nodular masses located at the left first branchial arch and the right pseudobranch, respectively. Histologically, the neoplasias were composed of blast-like cells that differentiated into cartilage and branchial lamellae embedded in abundant fibrous connective tissue. Based on these findings, a branchioblastoma was diagnosed.  相似文献
