Sisal fibres were subjected to a 2 % sodium hydroxide solution treatment for 2, 5 and 8 h at 35 °C. Change in chemical composition of the alkali treated fibres in comparison to that of the untreated fibres was evaluated. Fibres were characterized with respect to its FTIR, linear density, crystallinity, tenacity, modulus and % breaking strain. Tenacity of the fibres increased initially and then decreased as the time of alkali treatment was increased. Modulus of elasticity of the fibres increased with increase in alkali treatment time. Fibres lost breaking strain (%) gradually with increase in treatment time. Variation in mechanical properties of composites was studied with respect to the duration time of alkali treatment of fibres. The failure mode was particularly investigated before and after treatment for better understanding of the effect of alkali treatment.  相似文献

Process parameters such as gelation and curing temperatures are parameters that influence the pultruded kenaf reinforced vinyl ester composites profile quality and performance. The effect of gelation and curing temperatures on mechanical (tensile, flexural and compression properties) and morphological properties of pultruded kenaf reinforced vinyl ester composites were analyzed. Obtained results indicated that increase of gelation and curing temperatures during the pultrusion process of kenaf reinforced vinyl ester composites influenced the mechanical properties of the composites. When the gelation and curing temperatures were increased, tensile strength, tensile modulus, flexural strength, flexural modulus and compressive strength were affected and they were either increased or decreased. The factors that influenced these results include improper curing, excessive curing, water diffusion, and the problems associated with interfacial bonding between fibre and matrices. The optimum values of the tensile strength for gelation and curing temperatures of kenaf pultruded composites were at 100 °C and 140 °C, tensile modulus at 80 °C and 180 °C, flexural strength at 100 ° and 140 °, flexural modulus at 120 ° and 180 °, and compressive strength at 120 °C and 180 °C, respectively. The scanning electron micrographs of tensile fractured samples clearly show that with the increase in gelation temperature, it creates the lumens between matrix and kenaf fibre thus reducing tensile properties whereas increasing the curing temperature caused less fibre pull out and enhanced fibre/matrix interfacial bonding.  相似文献

Although the pineapple leaf fibers (PALF) are long known as domestic threading material in Malaysia, they are currently of little use despite being mechanically and environmentally sound. This study evaluated some selected properties of Josapine PALF and PALF-vinyl ester composites as well as the effects of simple abrasive combing and pretreatments on fiber and composite properties. Using PALF vascular bundles extracted from different parts of the leaves did not significantly affect PALF-vinyl ester composite mechanical properties. At low weight fraction and consolidating pressure, PALF fibers regardless of diameters and locations performed equally well in enhancing composite flexural properties under static loading. Finer bundles enhanced PALF-vinyl ester composite toughness indicated by tests at higher speeds. Abrasive combing produces cleaner and finer bundles suitable for reinforcing composites for applications not requiring high toughness.  相似文献

Polymer composites of polyamide 6,6 reinforced with short glass fiber were prepared by injection molding, conditioned under dry, 50 % relative humidity and wet. Investigations by DSC, DMA and tensile tests were conducted. FLD study showed that more fiber degradation occurred during processing of the composites with higher fiber loading. DSC analysis revealed that the incorporation of glass fiber and moisture into the PA 6,6 matrix resulted in a remarkable decrease in the degree of crystallinity. DMA results revealed the glass transition temperatures were sensitive to moisture absorption and their values moved to a lower temperature upon exposure to moisture. Incorporation of glass fiber into the polyamide 6,6 gave rise to a significant improvement in tensile modulus and tensile strength, while tensile strain was reduced. Exposure to different environments from dry to wet conditions resulted in a decrease in the strength and modulus, while tensile strains decreased.  相似文献

In this research work, aramid and semi-carbon fibers (SCFs) were hybridized in the form of interlayer or layer by layer into epoxy matrix by hand lay-up method. Afterward, the effect of hybridization on the thermal and mechanical properties of epoxy composites was characterized by thermal analysis; horizontal burning; tensile and bending tests. Based on the results of the mechanical tests, increasing SCFs to aramid fibers ratio decreased tensile strength, elastic and flexural modulus. But with increasing this ratio to 53 % failure strain reduced, whereas in the ratios of more than 53 %, the failure strain enhanced. The results of thermal analysis curves indicated that there are three stage mass loss at the temperature ranges of 100-220, 270-470 and 500-620 °C. It was also found that with increasing the SCFs to aramid fibers ratio decreased the third-stage of the mass loss. The results of horizontal burning showed that increasing the SCFs to aramid fibers ratio decreased the rate of burning.  相似文献

The objective of this investigation was to evaluate the mechanical, thermal stability and viscoelastic behaviors of experimental PP composites made from wheat straw and PP-g-MA coupling agent. Four levels of wheat straw, 10, 20, 25 and 30 wt % and two levels of coupling agent, 0 and 3 % wt were mixed with PP in rotary type mixer and injection molding process, respectively. Tensile characteristics and impact strength, thermal gravity and dynamic mechanical and thermal analysis of the samples were evaluated. Based on the results, it was observed that the tensile properties increased and impact strength decreased with the increase in the fiber loading from 10 % to 30 %. Further, the composites treated with PP-g-MA exhibited improved mechanical properties which confirmed efficient fiber-matrix adhesion. DMT analysis showed that the PP composites made of 30 % wheat straw containing 3 % PP-g-MA showed the highest E’ and lowest tan δ than the untreated ones. Also, the thermal stability of wheat straw was lower than PP and as filler content in the composites increased, the thermal stability decreased and the ash content increased.  相似文献

Jute fabric reinforced polypropylene composites were fabricated by compression molding technique. Fiber content in the composites was optimized at 45 % by weight of fiber by evaluating the mechanical parameters such as tensile strength, tensile modulus, bending strength, bending modulus. Surface treatment of jute fabrics was carried out by mercerizing jute fabrics with aqueous solutions of NaOH (5, 10 and 20 %) at different soaking times (30, 60 and 90 mins) and temperatures (0, 30 and 70 °C). The effect of mercerization on weight and dimension of jute fabrics was studied. Mechanical properties of mercerized jute-PP composites were measured and found highest at 20 % NaOH at 0 °C for 60 min soaking time. Thermal analytical data from thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis showed that mercerized jute-PP composite achieved higher thermal stability compared to PP, jute fabrics and control composite. Degradation characteristics of the composites were studied in soil, water and simulated weathering conditions. Water uptake of the composites was also investigated.  相似文献

A series of the long glass fiber reinforced thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers and poly (styrene-acrylonitrile) (LGF/TPU/SAN) composites with different contents of long glass fiber were prepared by using self-designed impregnation device. Dynamic mechanical properties of TPU/SAN matrix reinforced with 10, 20 and 30 % by weight long glass fibers have been investigated by using dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMA). The results indicated that the content of long glass fiber and scanning frequency had some influence on dynamic mechanical properties and glass transition of LGF/TPU/SAN composites. In addition, the Arrhenius relationship has been used to calculate the activation energy of a-transition of the LGF/TPU/SAN composites. SEM demonstrates the relatively good dispersion of the long glass fiber in the TPU/SAN matrix. In addition, Effects of the content of long glass fiber on mechanical properties of the LGF/TPU/SAN composites are investigated.  相似文献

Most materials used in daily life are polymeric materials based on petrochemistry. The used polymeric materials can cause land pollution and air pollution after landfill or incineration. In contrast, natural fiber reinforced (NFR) composites are more suitable for the environment, however the reliability in terms of the durability and weatherability of NFR composites is still lacking. Thus, NFR composites require the reliability involved with durability and weatherability. In this work, poly(butylene terephthalate-co-glutarate) (PBTG), with a chemical structure similar to biodegradable PBAT, was used as the matrix in the composites, and hemp fibers were used as the reinforcement. Hemp/PBTG composites were fabricated by stacking hemp-fiberwebs and PBTG films with various fiber contents and thermal exposure times. Characteristics of the composites, such as the morphological structure, chemical structure, tensile properties, compressive properties, flexural properties, and impact strength, were analyzed to obtain the effects of fiber volume fraction and thermal exposure. As a result, hemp/PBTG composites were hardened in proportion to fiber volume fractions, and the hardening behavior of the composites increased tensile strength and flexural strength. However, the hardened structure of the composites decreased the impact strength and compressive strength of the composites. On the other hand, the mechanical properties of hemp/PBTG composites with thermal exposure times, were governed significantly by the brittleness behavior of the resin and the increased crystallinity of hemp fibers. Thus, the hemp fibers contributed to the improvements on structural stability, tensile strength and flexural strength of the hemp/PBTG composites, and increased the thermal durability of the composites with various thermal exposures.  相似文献

In recent years, composites based on glass fiber reinforced polymer have been widely used in order to meet increasing durability and safety regulations, particularly in the power cable, automotive and plane industry. In this paper, mechanical and electrical properties of high density polyethylene (HDPE) and HDPE containing glass fiber polymer composites were investigated and compared at different temperatures. Composite materials were prepared with the hot pressing method. Tensile strength, % elongation and the modulus of elasticity (or Young’s modulus) were determined for each sample at different temperatures. In addition to this, at different temperatures τ σ and τ E have mechanical and electrical lifetime respectively, corresponding to mechanical tension (σ) and electrical strength (E), and this was investigated for each sample. As compared to the mechanical and electrical properties of neat HDPE, HDPE/0.5 % glass fiber composites have been found to have better mechanical and electrical durability.  相似文献

In this study, the maleic anhydride grafted styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene block copolymer (SEBS-g-MA) is used as the compatilizer for polylactic acid (PLA)/carbon fiber (CF) composites. The effects of SEBS-g-MA on the mechanical properties, thermal behavior, interfacial compatibility, and electrical characteristics of composites are then evaluated. The mechanical property tests indicate that when the amount of compatilizer increases, the tensile properties and flexural property of the composites decrease while their impact strength increases. The SEM results show that the compatilizer can decrease the interstices between PLA and CF, and thereby augments their interfacial compatibility. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results confirm that the compatilizer results in a greater crystallization temperature and a greater crystallinity of the composites. The electrical characteristic results indicate that neither PLA nor SEBS-g-MA is not interfered with the conductive network that is constructed by CF, which is exemplified by an average electromagnetic shielding effect of above ?30 dB. This study confirms that SEBS-g-MA can improve interfacial compatibility and toughness, as well as attain good electrical characteristics of PLA/CF composites.  相似文献

The aim of this paper is to study the effect of fibre content on mechanical and morphological properties and thermal stability of roselle fibres (RFs) reinforced polyurethane (TPU) composites. The RF/TPU composites were prepared at difference fibre contents; 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 wt% by melt mixed mixer and hot press at 170 °C. Mechanical (tensile, flexural and impact strength) and Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) properties of RF/TPU composites were measured according to ASTM standard. Obtained results indicated that effect of fibre contents display improved tensile and flexural and impact strength properties. RF/TPU composites show the best mechanical and thermal properties at 40 wt% roselle fibre content. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrograph of fractured tensile sample of the roselle composite revealed good fibre/matrix bonding. TGA showed that RF/TPU with difference fibre contents had improved thermal stability.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of a current study on polypropylene matrix composites processed by injection, with two different glass fiber lengths and five different volume fractions. Physical and mechanical properties were obtained, namely flexural strength, stiffness modulus and fracture toughness. The mechanical properties of the composites increased significantly with the increase of the fibers volume fraction in agreement with the Counto model. The effect of water immersion time was also analysed. Immersion in water promotes a marked decrease in mechanical properties in the early seven-ten days, and afterwards tends to stabilize. Water causes a decrease of the relative strength which increases with fiber volume fraction and reaches about 29 % and 32 % for 20 % of 4.5 mm fiber length and for 25 % of 12 mm fiber length respectively, after 28 days immersion in water. Fracture toughness increases with fiber volume fraction and is always higher for 12 mm fiber length composites than for 4.5 mm fiber length composites.  相似文献

In this work, the effect of organosolv lignin on properties of polypropylene (PP)/chitosan composites was investigated. Mechanical and thermal properties of the composites were analyzed by means of ASTM D 638-91, ASTM D 256, thermogravimetry analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Tensile strength and elongation at break of the PP composites decreased upon the presence of chitosan filler, but Young’s modulus improved. Impact strength was found to increase with the maximum value at 30 php of filler loading. At a similar loading, treated PP/chitosan composites were found to have higher tensile strength, elongation at break, Young’s modulus as well as impact strength than untreated composites. Furthermore, the presence of organosolv lignin imparted a plasticizing effect. Thermal properties of the treated PP/chitosan composites were better as compared with the untreated PP/chitosan composites; although the chemical treatment did not alter the thermal degradation mechanism. In addition, the obtained results were comparable to results from previous studies. This finding implied that the organosolv lignin could be a potential reagent to replace its synthetic counterpart.  相似文献

This study aims to investigate the effects of two types of wood flour; oil palm mesocarp flour (OMF) and rubberwood flour (RWF), and their particle sizes on mechanical, physical, and thermal properties of wood flour reinforced recycled polypropylene (rPP) composites. The composite materials were manufactured into panels by using a twin-screw extruder. The rPP composites based on RWF significantly showed higher flexural, tensile, and compressive properties (both strength and modulus) as well as hardness and thermal stability than those composites based on OMF for the same particle sizes. However, distribution of RWF in the rPP matrix was less homogeneous than that of the rPP/OMF composites. Furthermore, a decrease of the particle sizes of filler for the rPP/OMF or RWF composites increased the flexural, tensile, compressive, and hardness properties. Likewise, the thermal stability of both OMF and RWF composites were insignificantly affected by the particle sizes.  相似文献

Polyester-based thermoplastic elastomer (Hytrel®) was melt-compounded with multi-walled nanotubes (MWNTs) using an internal mixer and the changes in the thermal, electrical and rheological properties were investigated using a range of nanotube contents (from 0.1 to 7 wt%). Even at nanotube concentrations as low as 0.1 wt%, the crystallization temperature was remarkably elevated by 15 °C and it increased further up to 22 °C with a 5 wt% loading. On the contrary, the melting temperature increased by 2 °C with 0.1 wt% MWNTs and it was slightly decreased by further additions of MWNTs. Electrical conductivity measured by the four probe method was detected from the 1 wt% MWNTs, indicative of electrical percolation. In addition, MWNTs starting from 4 wt% and above had no significant effect on the electrical conductivity, while it rapidly increased with nanotube contents below 4 wt%. Dynamic rheological properties were measured using a strain controlled rotational rheometer. The complex viscosity increased with MWNT contents giving an abrupt increase between 0.5 and 1 wt% loadings. In addition, the storage and loss modulus increased in a different manner depending on the range of the nanotube concentration. In the Cole-Cole plot, the slope of the nanocomposites decreased from 1.63 to 0.74 with increasing nanotube contents. In the Casson plot, the addition of MWNTs up to 0.5 wt% did not show any yield behavior giving an extremely low value for the yield stress, but further additions of nanotubes increased it notably. The presence of nanotubes in the elastomer increased the relaxation time with nanotube contents and their effect became weak as the frequency increased.  相似文献

Ni-coated short carbon fibers (Ni-SCFs) were prepared using an electrodeposition method. Short carbon fiber (SCF) reinforced epoxy composites were prepared by changing the fiber content (0.1–0.7 wt%). To investigate the effect of Ni-coated short carbon fibers on the mechanical and electrical properties of the composites, we prepared two kinds of reinforcements: the short carbon fibers treated by 400 °C (400 °C treated SCFs) and Ni-SCFs. Fracture characteristics of the composites revealed the Ni coatings and the epoxy matrix had a better interface, so that the results of tensile and bending strength were better in epoxy/Ni-SCFs composites than those in epoxy/400 °C treated SCFs composites. The 400 °C treated SCFs decreased the electrical resistivity of the epoxy composites, compared to the pure epoxy. However the epoxy/Ni-SCFs composites had lower electrical resistivity than epoxy/400 °C treated SCFs with the same fiber content.  相似文献

Recently, carbon fiber composites have been widely used as structural reinforcement materials of buildings, replacing reinforcing bars or concrete. And the increase in use of super fibers such as aramid and high strength PE, which is aimed at improving the reinforcement properties, has resulted in a demand for a resin system with excellent mechanical and thermal properties. In this research, a fiber-reinforced composite has been produced by using the super fibers such as carbon fiber or aramid fiber, reinforcement resin and the silica hybrid compound containing epoxy group. This study was carried out to confirm the effect of the silica hybrid on mechanical properties, heat resistance and adhesion strength of a fiber-reinforced epoxy composite, which was produced by blending silica or introducing silica hybrid through covalent bonds. And the silica hybrid containing epoxy group, which may be introduced to the structure of fiber-reinforced epoxy composite through covalent bonds caused by reaction with a hardener, has been used, so that the heat resistance and adhesion strength could be improved.  相似文献
