A series of trials was conducted to compare the digestibility of organic matter in castrated male sheep and non-lactating and lactating cows given diets containing lucerne cobs. Similar digestibility coefficients were determined when sheep and non-lactating cows were given hay and lucerne cobs, but lactating cows digested diets of hay, lucerne cobs and concentrates less well than sheep. It is concluded that if sheep are used in digestibility trials with diets containing processed lucerne and concentrates intended for milking cows, appreciable errors of prediction of digestibility of organic matter may arise.  相似文献

A comparison was made of the digestibility, voluntary intake and concentration of N in faecal organic matter in castrated male sheep and non-lactating cows offered herbage ad libitum. The sheep ate 22% more herbage DM per kg liveweight than the cows. In general, the sheep and cows digested the organic matter of the herbage to the same extent, although on two occasions significantly higher digestibilities were observed in cows than in sheep. Similar concentrations of N in faecal organic matter in sheep and cows were matched by similar digestibilities of herbage organic matter. Regression equations relating herbage organic matter digestibility to faecal N concentration were not significantly different between sheep and cattle.  相似文献

Experiments with cows and sheep are described in which the voluntary intakes of hay and silage of differing digestibility were determined. The voluntary intake of hay increased consistently with increasing digestibility, but the relationship was not as well defined for silage. The addition of concentrates depressed the intake of hay, and this effect was more marked for hay with a high digestibility than with poorer quality hay. Concentrates appeared to depress the intake of hay by sheep more than by cows, an effect which was again more marked when the hay had a high digestibility value.  相似文献

Two experiments are described in which groups of lactating cows, non-lactating cattle and weaned calves grazed a sequence of swards varying in maturity and herbage mass under strip grazing management at a daily herbage allowance of 60 g dry matter per kg live weight. Lactating cows ate 43% and 76% more herbage than non-lactating cattle of similar weight in the two experiments but herbage OM intakes per unit live weight by the calves and lactating cows were similar.
Variations in diet digestibility and herbage intake in the lactating and non-lactating cattle with changes in sward conditions were similar. In the first experiment the calves were experienced grazers; the variation in the digestibility of the herbage selected was less in the calves than the adult cattle, but the variation in herbage intake was greater. The calves in the second experiment were younger, and they were inexperienced grazers; their ability to increase herbage intake in response to changing sward conditions was poorer than that of adult cattle, though variations in diet digestibility were similar in all classes.
The practical implications of these results are discussed briefly.  相似文献

The variation between non-lactating British Friesian cows in eating and ruminating pattern, digestibility and voluntary intake of hay were measured about 4 weeks before calving. Among fourteen of the cows the daily duration of eating ranged from 214 to 462 min and rumination from 410 to 599 min with CV of 20 and 14 respectively. Daily hay intake varied between cows from 5.93 to 11.18 kg dry matter (DM) with a CV of 14. The mean digestibility coefficient of organic matter measured in nineteen cows was 0.57 ± 0.014 s.d. and of cellulose 0.70 ± 0.013 s.d. Intake of hay and cellulose digestibility were correlated (r = 0.51, P <0.05). There was a positive correlation between hay intake and duration of eating (r=0.64, P <0.01) but not between intake of hay and rate of eating. Daily time spent ruminating per kg hay DM eaten was negatively correlated with hay intake (r = 0.66, P <0.01). It is concluded that variation between cows in chewing time and in digestibility of cellulose may be important factors related to variation between cows in voluntary intake of hay.  相似文献

Three comparisons were made, with non-lactating fistulated cows, of the voluntary intake of silage and hay prepared from similar herbage. On average 28% more dry matter was eaten as hay than as silage. Silage and hay had similar digestibilities, but silage residues tended to remain in the gut longer than those of hay. The amount of digesta in the reticulo-rumen immediately after a meal ad lib . was greater with hay than with silage. The cows spent longer eating and ruminating per kg dry matter of silage than of hay. The results are discussed in relation to possible factors determining the voluntary intake of silage.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate whether bovine faeces could replace rumen liquor collected from fistulated sheep in the determination of organic matter digestibility (OMD) of forages in vitro . The first experiment compared two inocula that had been prepared by mixing 83 and 333 g of cattle faeces with 1 litre of artificial saliva according to the first stage of the in vitro technique of Tilley and Terry ( Journal of the British Grassland Society, 18, 104–111, 1963). Inocula made from 333 g of faeces gave higher values of OMD than that prepared from 83 g of faeces and was used in subsequent studies. When a 48-h acid pepsin digestion, the second stage of the Tilley and Terry (1963 ) technique, was included, the OMD values and the ease of filtering of undigested residues were increased. The second experiment compared digestibility determined with inocula produced from faeces with that produced from rumen liquor. The OMD of a ryegrass hay determined with an inoculum prepared from faeces was 0·468 compared with 0·528 when using an inoculum prepared from rumen liquor. The third experiment investigated the accuracy of estimating the OMD of eight contrasting forages determined using rumen liquor from three sheep ( y ) and faeces from two cows ( x ). All regressions were significant ( P  < 0·001) and had residual standard deviations (r.s.d.) of between ±0·019 and ±0·022. The final study compared faeces collected from cattle fed with either hay or concentrates. The OMD of forage was higher from the hay-fed animals, but the r.s.d. values of the regressions were similar. It was concluded that cattle faeces shows potential as an alternative to rumen liquor collected from rumen-fistulated sheep for use in the in vitro digestibility assay of forages.  相似文献

Three experiments were carried out to study the effects of feeding lucerne silage (wilted to give different dry-matter (DM) contents) and ventilated hay to dairy cows on milk production, milk quality, milk-renneting properties, clostridial spore content and the quality of cheese prepared from the milk. The lucerne, cut at vegetative or early-bud stages of maturity, was harvested from alternate windrows and conserved as silage or artificially dried hay. The lucerne was wilted until it reached different DM contents of 550, 360 and 432 g kg–1 in the three experiments, harvested, chopped with a self-loading forage wagon and ensiled in low and narrow clamps made up of transferable prefabricated walls. The organic acid content, pH, yeast and mould counts of the lucerne silage suggested that there was no aerobic deterioration. In each experiment, fifty Italian Friesian lactating cows were divided into two groups and fed two maize silage-based rations for 6 weeks, which only differed in the lucerne forage [silage (S) vs. ventilated hay (H)], in a cross-over experimental design. The lucerne in the rations represented 35%, 23% and 24% of the DM of the rations for the three experiments. The microbiological profiles of the ration were influenced more by the maize silage than by the lucerne silage. Individual daily DM intakes were similar for the two treatments in Experiments 1 and 3 (on average 18·7 kg in Experiment 1 and 20·3 kg in Experiment 3) and slightly lower for S cows in comparison to H cows in Experiment 2 (18·0 vs. 19·0 kg). Milk yields of S and H cows were 21·0 and 20·8, 20·0 and 20·6 (P < 0·01), and 28·4 and 27·9 kg d–1 in Experiments 1, 2 and 3 respectively. Milk composition was similar for all the experiments for the two treatments, except that the protein content was lower and the fat content was higher in the silage treatment than in the hay. The renneting properties and microbiology of the milk were not influenced by the introduction of lucerne silage into the rations, although the season in which it was consumed had a greater effect on the microbiological content, in terms of standard bacterial counts, proteolytic, coli and lactic acid bacteria, and clostridia spores. The clostridial spore counts were always very low (< 400 per litre), thus fulfilling the requirements for top-quality milk for Grana cheese production. In the third experiment, the quality of Grana Padano cheese produced was examined, and no differences between treatments were observed after 12 months of maturation. These results show that lucerne silage can be included in the ration of dairy cows instead of ventilated lucerne hay, which is considered to be the top-quality hay available for the production of milk destined for Grana cheese, without any negative effects on milk and cheese quality.  相似文献

Three experiments examine the effects of giving small supplements of flaked maize to steers on the digestibility and retention of nutrients from rations of grass silage, lucerne hay and fresh lucerne. The digestibility of the dry matter, crude fibre and crude protein of the silage ration was depressed by the successive additions of 1, 2 or 3 Ib flaked maize per day. There was a tendency for the steers to retain more nitrogen as the level of starch supplementation increased, in spite of a lowered crude-protein digestibility. The digestibilities of the constituents of lucerne hay and fresh lucerne were slightly increased by the addition of 2 and 4 Ib flaked maize per day. The reasons are discussed for the different effect of the supplemental starch on the digestibility of the crude fibre from grass silage and from fresh or cured lucerne. Attention is drawn to the increase in the retention of N following the supplementation of silage with starch.  相似文献

Two experiments were carried out to evaluate propionic acid-treated hay as a feed for sheep in which eighteen ewes (experiment 1) and eighteen ewe lambs (experiment 2) were fed ad libitum on hay only. At feeding, the propionic acid-treated hays had higher D-values and water-soluble carbohydrate concentrations, but a lower dry matter concentration, than the untreated hays. The voluntary feed intake and liveweight gain of the sheep fed on two acid-treated hays and on an untreated hay in experiment 1 were similar. In the second experiment an acid-treated moist hay was eaten in greater amounts by the sheep and liveweight gains were greater than on the corresponding untreated hay, but were not significantly different from those of sheep fed on field-cured hay.  相似文献

A series of trials was carried out in which barn-dried hay and silage were fed to young fattening cattle with or without supplementary barley. Liveweight-gains on silage and barn-dried hay alone were too low to provide an adequate finish during winter feeding. Liveweight-gains on hay alone were always higher than those obtained on silage alone, the difference being more marked in lighter animals. There was a marked response to supplements of 3 and 4 lb (1.4 and 1.8 kg) of barley, the response being significantly greater in silage-fed cattle than in those fed on barn-dried hay. There was some evidence of growth compensation with the introduction of a barley supplement to cattle on silage diets, but there was no such response in those fed on hay. Compensatory growth was not accompanied by improved digestibility or N retention.  相似文献

In two experiments the effects of adding surface water to herbage on its digestion by ruminants were examined. In experiment 1, with sheep, adding water to silage reduced DM intake and the diet DM digestibility. Offering a high DM alternative forage, hay, increased DM digestibility with the wetted silage, but tended to decrease it with the dry silage. More hay was eaten with the wetted than dry silage. In experiment 2, with steers, adding water to fresh herbage reduced DM intake but had no effect on rumen pH or ammonia levels. Adding water to the herbage reduced the rate of DM disappearance from nylon bags placed in the rumen and the proportion of rumen liquor particles of low specific gravity. The proportion of very short and very long particles in the rumen liquor was also reduced by adding water to the herbage.  相似文献

With its potential for high yields and high animal output, lucerne appears to be an underexploited crop in British agriculture. In this paper an attempt is made to assess the prospects for expansion of the area of lucerne in Britain from an economic viewpoint, concentrating on lucerne as a conservation crop. Under good management lucerne is shown to have lower production costs than grass and its inclusion in the diet of dairy cows, but not beef cattle, could significantly lower winter feed costs. However, under apparently similar growing conditions, lucerne yields on different farms vary significantly, ranging from 9 to 13 t dry matter ha−1 a−1. At the lower yields, the economic attraction of growing and feeding lucerne in place of grass is small. Moreover, since potential lucerne production is concentrated in the south and east of Britain, lucerne competes with other arable crops. For lucerne to offer a gross margin per unit area comparable with these, the price for conserved lucerne would have to be set at a level at which dairy farmers would derive little economic advantage from feeding it. Thus, although lucerne is a forage crop with some potential, at present it is likely to offer economic possibilities only where producers can combine high yields with on-farm utilization of the crop.  相似文献

Two experiments are reported. In the first experiment the amino acid compositions of rumen bacteria and protozoa isolated from sheep given a diet of grass silage were compared with those taken from sheep given a diet of hay and barley; four sheep were assigned to each diet. There were no significant differences (P<0·05) between diets in the amino acid compositions of the microbial fractions and bacterial contents of α-ɛ-diaminopimelic acid were also similar for both diets.
In the second experiment the digestion of a grass silage and barley diet (65:35; 135 g CP (kg DM)-1) was studied using four non-lactating Ayrshire cows fitted with cannulae in the rumen and in the proximal duodenum. The mean N intake was 154 g d-1 and the corresponding duodenal flow was 126 ± 10 g d-1 indicating that 0·21±0·07 of the N intake was absorbed between the mouth and the duodenum. The mean rumen NH3-N concentration was high, 297 g litre-1, and the mean rate of microbial protein synthesis in the rumen was low, 17 g microbial N (kg OM apparently digested in the rumen)-1. There was a low content of bacterial N in the non-ammonia N at the duodenum (mean proportion 0·52±005) and low concentrations of methionine and lysine in the duodenal digesta protein. The results are discussed in relation to previously published data on the digestion of silage diets in sheep and to the utilization of silage diets for milk production in the cow.
It is concluded that with silage diets the supply of methionine and lysine to the duodenum is likely to be low because of the low rates of microbial protein synthesis in the rumen and that in cows those two amino acids may be limiting for milk production.  相似文献

Three feeding trials with big bale silage were carried out to determine whether previously established intake differences between artificially dried Italian ryegrass cultivars could be repeated under differing conditions of food preparation and presentation. The silage was prepared in 2 consecutive years from the same field crop and fed to groups of cattle in both years. The second year silage was also fed to sheep indoors. All animals were fed ad libitum and the voluntary intakes recorded for groups of cattle and individual sheep. Chewing activity was also recorded on all groups of sheep.
The chemical composition of the two cultivars as fresh grass was similar in 1984 but there were small differences in 1983 with Tarquin showing slightly higher organic matter digestibility (DOMD) and lower dry matter and water-soluble carbohydrate compared to RvP. The only consistent differences in silage composition between cultivars was a slightly higher level of modified acid detergent (MAD) fibre in RvP compared to Tarquin. Despite these small differences the voluntary intake of cattle fed Tarquin was 19% higher than RvP in the first year and 35% in the second, while sheep showed a similar difference of 40% with the second year silage.
Recording of jaw activity with sheep showed that animals spent 40% more time eating and 27% more time ruminating RvP than Tarquin per unit of food eaten. This suggested that the intake differences, which were independent of digestibility, were related to the physical resistance of the feed to breakdown by chewing. These differences depend on the structural characteristics of the plants and were associated with differences in leaf/stem ratios and MAD-fibre content. These are less likely to be affected by the method of conservation or feed presentation and, although the degree of difference between the cultivars changed with the different procedures, the inherently higher intake of Tarquin persisted.  相似文献

White-clover herbage proved to be of relatively high digestibility and it was possible to predict the digestibility of mixed grass and clover herbages from a knowledge of the digestibility and proportions of the components. Lucerne proved to be of low digestibility. Aftermath herbage was not so highly digestible as first cuts; and in autumn digestibility falls slowly as herbage ages. Digestibility was unrelated to the nitrogen content of herbage. In three trials no significant differences were found between the digestive efficiencies of wether sheep and dairy cows, while hormone implantation, although affecting animal metabolism, failed to influence feed digestibility. Restricted feeding at 50% of the ad libitum intake resulted in a slight increase in the apparent digestibility of herbage.  相似文献

Nutritive value and voluntary intake of legumes are generally considered to be higher than those of grasses when ensiled at similar digestibility, although high levels of soluble protein can result in low N utilization by animals and high losses to the environment. The objectives of this experiment were to describe the optimum combination of Westerwolds ryegrass ( Lolium multiflorum Lam. cv. Aubade) and lucerne ( Medicago sativa L. cv. AC Caribou) silages to maximize liveweight gain of steers fed silage, determine chemical components that are important and ascertain whether steers selected the optimum mixture when given a choice. Both silages contained similar concentrations of dry matter (DM), acid-detergent fibre (ADF) and organic acids, but lucerne silage had higher concentrations of N, soluble-N and ammonia-N. Westerwolds ryegrass silage contained more neutral-detergent fibre (NDF). In a 12-week experiment, voluntary intake by Hereford steers was not influenced when the proportion of the two silages was changed from 1 to 0 in 0·25 increments. However, liveweight gain and feed efficiency increased linearly ( P  < 0·001) as the proportion of ryegrass silage fed was increased. When preconditioned to either of the two silages, steers showed a significant preference for ryegrass over lucerne ( P  < 0·05). When conditioned to a mixture of both silages, no preference was elicited. It is suggested that extensive solubilization and deamination of protein in the lucerne silage may have caused the preference for Westerwolds ryegrass silage and the higher liveweight gains on diets containing higher proportions of Westerwolds ryegrass silage.  相似文献

Red clover (Trifolium pratense) and lucerne (Medicago sativa) are among the most common legume species used for ruminant feeding systems. Besides the greater nutritive quality and first-year ley yield compared to lucerne, red clover decreases its yield over the years. However, under unfavourable soil conditions the persistency of lucerne can be compromised, not performing as expected. This study compared yield and chemical composition of eight lucerne cultivars and one tetraploid red clover cultivar, with similar growth capacity as lucerne, replicated over two years. In the second year, four lucerne cultivars and the red clover cultivar were analysed for crude protein (CP) fractions, dry matter and neutral detergent fibre (NDF) digestibility. A randomized block design was used with three field blocks per cultivar for the multiple comparisons within each year. There were differences in DM yield, concentrations of CP and NDF and CP fractions among the lucerne cultivars, but the differences were inconsistent between years and between growth cycles within year. The red clover cultivar had lower CP and NDF concentrations than a majority of the lucerne cultivars, and greater in vitro organic matter digestibility compared to all of the lucerne cultivars. Also, the red clover cultivar had greater rumen undegradable-to-degradable CP ratio but confirmed its lower yield persistency compared to the lucerne cultivars.  相似文献

High rainfall and the corresponding low herbage DM content has been shown to adversely affect cattle intakes and production. This could arise from physical restrictions on intake or digestion rate, or other behavioural limitations such as reduced palatability. A knowledge of the reason for the intake reduction would assist in determining the optimum supplement to feed. Eight steers were offered four diets in a changeover design. The diets were: A, cut herbage; B, cut herbage with added surface water; C, as B but with a low dry matter (DM) forage supplement (silage); and D, as B but with a high DM forage supplement (hay). The addition of surface water to herbage reduced DM intake and feeding time but had no effect on biting rate or rate of intake. Neither hay nor silage was eaten in sufficient quantities to restore DM intake, even though the silage was of similar nutrient composition to the herbage.  相似文献

Sixteen Friesian cows were given four dietary treatments in a 4 × 4 Latin square experiment with a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments. The diets consisted of grass silage ad libitum plus 2 kg of hay per day and two types of concentrates of either barley or a mixture of barley, oats and fibrous by-products [200,200 and 600 g per kg dry matter (DM) respectively], with two protein contents. For the low-protein diets, barley- (B) and fibre-based (F) concentrates were given without protein supplements, while for high-protein diets 1 kg of both concentrates was replaced with fish-meal (FM). The concentrates were given at the rate of 9kgd-1 for the cows (n= 12) and 8kg d-1 for the heifers (n= 4). The cows given the F diets tended (P < 0·10) to have a greater silage dry matter intake and produced 1·5kg d-1 more (P < 0·05) milk with a lower (P < 0·05) protein content than those given the B diets. Increasing dietary crude protein concentration with FM had no effect on feed intake but resulted in significant increases in milk yield (P < 0·01), milk protein content (P < 0·05) and yields of milk constituents. The response in milk yield to FM tended to be greater with barley than with fibrous supplement (+2·5 vs+ 1·5kgd-1). Compared with B diets, the greatest relative increase occurred in lactose yield (0·07) when the corresponding F diets were fed, while FM produced the greatest response in protein yield (0·12). The calculation of the utilization of metabolizable energy (ME) for milk production showed that both the feeding of a concentrate consisting of different carbohydrate sources and inclusion of fish meal improved the utilization of ME, the effects being partially additive. It is concluded that the nutrient supply to the cow's tissues can be modified by the source of carbohydrate and protein supplementation as indicated by different responses in the yield of milk constituents. The production response to protein supplementation may depend on the source of carbohydrate in the concentrate.  相似文献
