This paper describes the handled walking and trotting kinematics (linear, temporal, and angular traits) of 35 Menorca Purebred (MEN) stallions, and the relationships among these variables is presented for the first time, along with a discussion of the influence of the hind limb pastern angle on kinematic variables at both gaits. For data collection, all animals, aged between 3 and 10 years old and belonging to 28 different studs, were recorded under the same experimental and environmental conditions, using a three-dimensional (3D) semiautomatic movement analysis system. A total of 24 kinematic variables (temporal, linear, and angular) at the walk and the trot and a morphometric variable measured at the mid stance position of walking (hind pastern angle) were included in this analysis. Angle-time diagrams of the hind pastern angle while walking and trotting normalized to stride duration were also obtained. Generally the MEN stallions' forelimb movements closely resembled the movement characteristics of other European dressage performance breeds, while the hind limb locomotion showed a greater likeness to Iberian dressage Purebreds. Despite this, their ability in collection and propulsion at the walk and the trot was relatively low. The hind limb pastern conformation was partially connected to the hind limb movements for both gaits, with an apparently negative effect of excessively upright pasterns on the amplitude at the trot, which indirectly reduced collection ability.  相似文献

This study investigated kinematic patterns in clinically normal German Shepherd dogs (GSDs) compared to those with hip dysplasia and with no clinical signs of lameness. Two groups of GSDs, including 10 clinically healthy dogs (G1) and 10 with hip dysplasia (G2), were trotted on a treadmill at a constant speed. Kinematic data were collected by a 3-camera system and analysed by a motion-analysis program. Flexion and extension joint angles and angular velocities were determined for the shoulder, elbow, carpal, hip, stifle, and tarsal joints.Within each group, the differences between the right and left limbs in all kinematic variables were not significant. Minimum angle, angular displacement and minimum angular velocity did not differ between groups. Significant differences were observed in the maximum angular velocity and maximum angle of the hip joint (dysplastic > healthy), and in the maximum angular velocity of the carpal joint (healthy > dysplastic). It was concluded that, when trotting on a treadmill, dysplastic dogs with no signs of lameness may present joint kinematic alterations in the hind as well as the forelimbs.  相似文献

Linear, temporal and angular biokinematic characteristics of the forelimb at the walk in different breeds were determined, highlighting inter-breed differences. Twenty-three healthy stallions were used: ten Andalusians (AN), seven Arabs (AR) and six Anglo-Arabs (AA). Height at the withers was significantly different between groups (P < 0.001). Six trials per horse were recorded using a levelled video camera (sampling frame rate 25 frames/s), digitized and analysed using a semi-automatic movement analysis system. No statistically significant differences in speeds were recorded between breeds (P > 0.05). The only temporal parameter which was similar in the three breeds was the moment at which the hoof reached the highest point in its trajectory. The variables presenting the most significant differences were the percentages of deceleration and propulsion within the stance phase. ANOVA for angular variables showed that the greatest difference was in the range of angular movement of the carpal joint, being higher in AN, due to a lower minimum value. In the fetlock joint, the greatest difference was observed in minimum values, which differed in all three breeds. Significant inter-breed differences were also observed for maximum limb retraction, being lowest in the AN group, followed by the AA and AR groups. This finding was reflected in the angular range of motion, despite smaller differences in the degree of limb protraction; very similar values were reported in all three breeds. As regards the elbow joint, no inter-breed differences were observed in terms of minimum values, whereas differences were recorded for maximum and angular range of motion, higher values being displayed by the AR and AN groups than by AA animals. In conclusion, inter-breed differences may be determined in equine forelimb biokinematics at the walk. This study distinguished between AN, AR and AA horses.  相似文献

This prospective study used radiographic techniques to evaluate the inclination, Norberg, quadriceps and femoral varus angles, and the patellar position in dogs with developmental medial patellar luxation. The study also compared these measurements pre- and post-operatively to determine how they were affected by surgical procedures. Eighteen dogs with unilateral or bilateral luxation were used, and 4 groups were established according to luxation grade. Except for the quadriceps angle, there was no difference among the groups preoperatively. Significant differences for the quadriceps angle were observed between Grades 1 and 3, and between Grades 2 and 3. The Norberg and femoral varus angles and the patellar position showed no changes between pre- and postoperative groups. However, measurements of the preoperative quadriceps angle and postoperative inclination angle may be useful for evaluating dogs with grade-3 luxation. Further studies using other imaging techniques are required in dogs with severe grade-4 luxation due to the difficulty in obtaining a good radiographic position.  相似文献

This study was carried out to determine the morphometric values of the pelvic cavity, the cranial and caudal pelvic aperture by three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of the images obtained by computed tomography in adult Van Cats and to show the differences between these indicators in both genders. A total of 16 adult Van Cats, eight male and eight female, were used in the study. Animals were anesthetized with ketamine–xylazine combination and were scanned by computerized tomography. Images of the pelvic cavity were obtained. Three-dimensional reconstruction of the pelvis was performed with three-dimensional modelling program. Measurements of the diameters of the pelvic cavity, the cranial and caudal pelvic aperture were calculated from these images, and statistical analyzes were performed. Three-dimensional modelling of the pelvic cavity of Van Cats were examined between males and females. The results showed that there were significant (p < .05) differences between measurement of the pelvic inclination, the medial transverse diameter, the caudal transverse diameter and the angle between ischiatic arch. In addition, the correlations between age and weight were found statistically significant (p < .05) with the dorsal transverse diameter, the intermediate transverse diameter and the caudal transverse diameter in males. On the other hand, the correlations of age were statistically significant (p < .01) with the cranial pelvic aperture and the caudal pelvic aperture in females. In conclusion, some biometric values of pelvic cavity were observed to be statistically different in Van Cats.  相似文献

Copies of the radiographs were circulated to eight people with instructions for measurement of the angle of inclination of the femoral head and neck by two methods. OBJECTIVE: To test the hypotheses that kinematic data of the sagittal motion of canine hind limbs during walking obtained with a 2-dimensional (2-D) system correlate well with those obtained with a 3-dimensional (3-D) system and that the data obtained with the 2-D system are repeatable. ANIMALS: 6 adult dogs with no evidence of lameness. PROCEDURES: Hind limb motions of 6 walking dogs were recorded via 2-D video and 3-D optoelectric systems simultaneously. Five valid trials were digitized, and 5 data sets (2-D 60 Hz, 3-D 180 Hz, 3-D sagittal 180 Hz, 3-D 60 Hz, and 3-D sagittal 60 Hz) of a complete gait cycle were created for each dog. In sagittal data sets, 3-D data were reduced to exclude coordinates for mediolateral orientation. Temporospatial parameters; angles of hip, stifle, and tarsal joints; and coefficients of variation of angular measurements of each dog were calculated for each data set. Accuracy of the 2-D analysis was determined by calculating mean absolute differences and estimating agreement between the 2-D and 3-D 180-Hz data sets. RESULTS: Values of joint angles and angular excursions measured with the 2-D system were repeatable and agreed with respective values obtained with the 3-D system. Reduction of the sampling rate had a greater impact on values of kinematic variables obtained with the 3-D system than did elimination of data on mediolateral orientation. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Kinematic analysis using a 2-D video system provided accurate and repeatable data of the sagittal angular motion of canine hind limbs during walking.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine whether feeding high doses of vitamin D3 7 d before slaughter would increase muscle Ca++ levels and result in more tender loin chops. Market lambs (n = 4 callipyge and 4 normal in Exp. 1, and n = 16 calipyge and 16 normal in Exp. 2) were randomly and equally assigned to feeding groups based on callipyge genotype and experimental diet, (vitamin D3 or control). Serum Ca++, muscle Ca++, Warner-Bratzler shear force, and troponin-T degradation data were analyzed. In Exp. 1, vitamin D3 was supplemented at 1 or 2 x 10(6) IU/d. The 2 x 10(6) IU dose resulted in the greatest serum Ca++ reponse and was chosen for Exp. 2. In Exp. 2, serum Ca++ concentration was higher (P < 0.05) for normal and callipyge lambs fed the vitamin D3 diet than for the control diet fed lambs. Muscle Ca++ concentrations, however, were not higher (P = 0.28) for the vitamin D3-fed lambs. Warner-Bratzler shear values were higher (P < 0.05) for callipyge than for normal lambs, but no differences were observed with vitamin D3 supplementation. These data were supported by results from Western blot analysis of troponin-T degradation, in which no differences were observed for vitamin D3 vs control diet lambs at 14 d postmortem. This experiment showed that feeding 2 x 10(6) IU/d of vitamin D3 to market lambs, callipyge or normal, raised serum Ca++ concentration, but did not increase muscle Ca++ concentration. This lack of response in muscle Ca++ was likely the reason that no differences were observed for Warner-Bratzler shear force values or troponin-T degradation data between the vitamin D3 and control loin chops. A higher dose of vitamin D3 may be required to improve tenderness.  相似文献

Studies of growth and conformation require statistical methods that are not applicable to subjective conformation standards used by breeders and trainers. A new system was developed to provide an objective approach for both science and industry, based on analysis of video images to measure aspects of conformation that were represented by angles or lengths. A studio crush was developed in which video images of horses of different sizes were taken after bone protuberances, located by palpation, were marked with white paper stickers. Screen pixel coordinates of calibration marks, bone markers and points on horse outlines were digitised from captured images and corrected for aspect ratio and 'fish-eye' lens effects. Calculations from the corrected coordinates produced linear dimensions and angular dimensions useful for comparison of horses for conformation and experimental purposes. The precision achieved by the method in determining linear and angular dimensions was examined through systematically determining variance for isolated steps of the procedure. Angles of the front limbs viewed from in front were determined with a standard deviation of 2-5 degrees and effects of viewing angle were detectable statistically. The height of the rump and wither were determined with precision closely related to the limitations encountered in locating a point on a screen, which was greater for markers applied to the skin than for points at the edge of the image. Parameters determined from markers applied to the skin were, however, more variable (because their relation to bone position was affected by movement), but still provided a means by which a number of aspects of size and conformation can be determined objectively for many horses during growth. Sufficient precision was achieved to detect statistically relatively small effects on calculated parameters of camera height position.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To assess the usefulness of standard radiographic projections for determining acetabular cup position and to compare 2 radiographic methods for calculation of the angle of lateral opening of the acetabular cup. STUDY DESIGN: In vitro radiographic study. METHODS: Acetabular components were mounted on a custom-built inclinometer. The effect of varying the angles of lateral opening, inclination, version, and centering of the x-ray beam on the radiographic appearance of the cup was investigated. The angle of lateral opening was calculated trigonometrically after direct measurement and by means of computer-aided image analysis. RESULTS: Using a ventrodorsal radiograph, the computer-aided measurement of angle of lateral opening was accurate to within 5 degrees when the true angle of lateral opening was > or = 40 degrees. In the case of direct measurement, the calculated angle was accurate to within 5 degrees only when the true angle was > or = 60 degrees. An increasing angle of inclination was associated with reduced accuracy of calculation of the angles of lateral opening and version. Standard radiographic assessment of acetabular version and inclination was not found to be clinically useful. The displacement of the x-ray beam, which would cause significant error in the determination of lateral opening, is unlikely to be exceeded in practice. Cup size had no significant effect on the accuracy of the results. CONCLUSIONS: Computer-aided image analysis can be used to calculate angles of lateral opening to within 10 degrees throughout the range of acetabular positions seen in practice and is appropriate for postoperative documentation of cup position. The angles of inclination and version should be interpreted with caution.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the influence of a 10-month training programme on the linear, temporal and angular characteristics of the fore and hind limbs at the trot in the Andalusian horse, using standard computer-aided videography. Sixteen male Andalusian horses were observed before and after training. Six strides were randomly selected for analysis in each horse and linear, temporal and angular parameters were calculated for fore and hind limbs. The training programme used here produced significant changes in kinematic parameters, such as shortening of stride length, and increase in swing duration and a decrease in hind limb stance percentage. No significant differences were recorded in the angular values for the forelimb joints. In trained horses, the more proximal joints of the hind limb, especially the hip and stifle, had a greater flexion while the fetlock showed a smaller extension angle. At the beginning of the swing phase, hip and stifle joints presented angles that were significantly more flexed. When the hind limbs came into contact with the ground, all the joints presented greater flexion after training.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to illustrate the possibilities of wavelet filtering to denoise hoof-acceleration data measured on different surfaces. Further, three variables from the time-domain acceleration signal and two variables from the single-sided amplitude spectrum of the Fourier-transformed signal were statistically analyzed to detect the differences between the riding surfaces as well as to compare the results of the different variables. For data recording, six Warmblood horses were trotted on five different riding surfaces. The recorded acceleration data were smoothed by wavelet filtering on three levels by using the Haar wavelet as well as the fourth-order Daubechies wavelet. The hoof’s landing phase was extracted from the acceleration signal by a special algorithm and analyzed because of to its significance with regard to the injury risk of a horse. More accurate hoof’s landing phases could be detected by the algorithm in the first and second approximations of both wavelet-filtered signals than in the original signal. The dissected hoof’s landing phases were used to calculate the aforementioned variables. The statistical analysis showed similar results within the variables of the time-domain signal and within the variables of the single-sided amplitude spectrum. The least square means of the original signal and the first and second approximation of both wavelet-filtered signals were on a similar level. In conclusion, it was shown that wavelet filtering is a suitable method to denoise acceleration-time curves. Further, the results of the five variables showed that the insertion of time- and frequency-domain variables was significant in the analysis of the acceleration data.  相似文献

Objective: To assess the reliability of radiographic measurement of angle of lateral opening (ALO) and angle of version of BFX acetabular cups. Study Design: In vitro radiographic study. Sample Population: BFX cups (24, 28, and 32 mm). Methods: Total hip replacement constructs (cups, 17 mm femoral head and a #7 CFX stem) were mounted on an inclinometer. Ventrodorsal radiographs were obtained with ALO varying between 21° and 70° and inclination set at 0°, 10°, 20°, and 30°. Radiographs were randomized using a random sequence generator. Three observers blinded to the radiograph order assessed ALO using 3 methods: (1) an ellipse method based on trigonometry; (2) using a measurement from the center of the femoral head to the truncated surface of the cup; (3) by visual estimation using a reference chart. Version was measured by assessing the ventral edge of the truncated surface. Results: ALO methods 2 and 3 were accurate and precise to within 10° and were significantly more accurate and precise than method 1 (P<.001). All methods were significantly less accurate with increasing inclination. Version measurement was accurate and precise to within 7° with 0–20° of inclination, but significantly less accurate with 30° of inclination. Conclusions: Methods 2 and 3, but not method 1, were sufficiently accurate and precise to be clinically useful. Version measurement was clinically useful when inclination was ≤20°.  相似文献

In this study, inclination angle of the femoral head and neck was measured on 484 limbs of 242 dogs belonging to 7 breeds, examined for hip dysplasia. These inclination angles were compared according to age, sex and joint laxity, evaluated with Subluxation Index (SI) and Norberg angle (NA) results. The findings indicate that (a) there was a minimal (nonsignificant) difference in femoral inclination angle between the dysplastic and nondysplastic dogs belonging to 7 breeds; (b) although there was no significant difference in femoral inclination angle between the nondysplastic dogs belonging to 4 breeds (Pointer, Irish Setter, Golden Retriever and German Shepherd), a significant difference was observed between Doberman and Labrador, and between Anatolian Karabash and the other six breeds (p < 0.001). Age and sex did not affect the femoral neck angle.  相似文献

Reasons for performing study: Loss of arytenoid abduction is a common post operative complication of laryngoplasty without a definitive cause. It has been a clinical impression during laryngoplasty surgery that there is great conformational variability along the caudal edge of the Thoroughbred cricoid cartilage that could impact post operative retention of suture position. A change in suture position would probably lead to some loss of abduction. Defining any structural variability of the cricoid would be an initial step in determining whether this variability could impact on the retention of suture position. Hypothesis: Anatomical variations in the larynx of Thoroughbred horses may be detected and measured using objective analysis and computed tomography. Methods: Larynges were harvested from 15 mature Thoroughbred horses. Helical CT scans were performed on each specimen. Three independent observers performed a series of measurements on 2D and 3D reconstruction images using digital software. Measurements included the lateral cricoid angle, the caudal cricoid prominences, the distance to the cricoid slope, the angle of the cricoarytenoid joints (CAJ), the cricoid thickness and the suture angle. Mean, standard deviation, coefficient of variation and linear regression analysis were performed among all observers and all measurements. Results: Notable conformational differences were evident on the 3D reconstructions. The highest degree of variability was found in 3 measurements: the distance to the lateral cricoid slope, the lateral cricoid angle and the cricoid thickness. A larger left CAJ angle directly and significantly correlated with a larger suture angle. Conclusions: There are notable conformational differences among cricoid specimens in the Thoroughbred larynx. Potential relevance: The morphometric differences identified may impact on optimal prosthesis placement and long‐term retention. Since a larger lateral cricoid angle may facilitate abduction loss secondary to a displaced and loosened suture, alternative techniques for suture placement may be of value to prevent arytenoid abduction loss.  相似文献

The effects of the method of calculation on the evaluation of the pharmacokinetic parameters of oxytetracycline after intravenous administration to calves. Veterinary Research Communications, 21 (4), 273-281The aim of this study was to assess the differences in the values of the pharmacokinetic parameters attributable to the use of either linear or nonlinear regression analysis and to find the effect of weighting schemes on these differences. Six calves received 20 mg/kg oxytetracycline i.v. Blood samples were drawn during 72 h. The assay of the drug was performed microbiologically. A bicompartmental pharmacokinetic model was used, kinetic analysis being carried out by linear regression (LR) and by weighted least-squares nonlinear regression (WLSNLR). Statistical analysis included a test for normality, the Kruskall-Wallis test and ANOVA with log transformation.The A0, and B0 did not show any statistically significant differences attributable to the mathematical method used. On the other hand, the statistically significant differences in the values found using the Kruskall-Wallis test and ANOVA with log transformation could be attributed to the different methods employed. ANOVA with log transformation determined statistically significant differences between the parameters obtained by linear analysis and those obtained by WLSNLR when the weighting (w) was 1. When weights were 1/x, 1/x2 or 1/ x, no statistically significant differences were found. The optimal weighting scheme was w = 1/x2 because of a more homogeneous scatter and random distribution of residuals about the abcissa axis in a plot of weighted residuals in the ordinate versus time in the abcissa. It was concluded that the use of these different procedures can give major variations in the apparent value of , the most important pharmacokinetic parameter. The correct selection of the weighting procedure is therefore fundamental in obtaining the best estimate of this pharmacokinetic parameter in WLSNLR.  相似文献

High-speed cinematography was used in documenting linear and temporal kinematic variables of the equine transverse gallop gait. The stride characteristics of four Quarter Horse fillies were used as a model. Horses were approximately thirty months of age and had been raised and trained similarly. Horses were filmed by two cameras simultaneously (243 frames/s) while galloping under the standardized conditions of a specially constructed 1.5 m wide track. The same saddle and bridle was used on all horses, and the horses were all ridden by the same person. Velocities averaged 13.1 m/s, stride lengths 5.06 m, and stride frequencies 2.60s−1. Kinematic variables determined for 29 gallop strides (16 left lead, 13 right lead) included timings and locations for maximum and minimum vertical positions of body surface markers; timings and angular measurements for maximum and minimum absolute angles of body segments; timings, angular measurements and angular velocities for maximum and minimum relative angles between body segments. Of 211 separate kinematic variables measured and reported for the gallop stride, 131 differed significantly (p<0.05) between leading and trailing sides of the body. Stride variables determined in this study may serve as reference values for normal equine gallop motion patterns.  相似文献

Background: Real‐time 3‐dimensional echocardiography (RT3D) is a recent technique based on volumetric scanning, eliminating the need for geometric modeling of the cardiac chambers and minimizing the errors caused by foreshortened views. Hypothesis: Estimations of left ventricular (LV) end‐diastolic (EDV) and end‐systolic volume (ESV), and left atrial (LA) size, differ depending on the echocardiographic technique of estimation. Animals: Fifty‐one dogs with acquired heart disease and 34 healthy control dogs. Methods: Prospective observational study by M‐mode (Teichholz method), Simpson's modified 2‐dimensional (2D) method, and RT3D methods for estimation of LV volumes. LA size was evaluated by 2D and RT3D methods. Results: RT3D showed good agreement with 2D for EDV and ESV, whereas Teichholz method overestimated LV volumes in comparison with the other 2 methods by approximately a factor 2. There were no statistically significant differences among the 3 methods in estimating ejection fraction. Comparison between RT3D assessment of LA end‐systolic volume per kilogram (LAs/kg) and LA to aortic ratio (LA/Ao) measured by 2D relative to each other showed that the RT3D method underestimated LAs/kg at lower values, and overestimated it at higher values. The difference between methods increased with increasing LA size. Conclusions and Clinical Importance: There was good agreement between RT3D and 2D methods of estimating EDV and ESV, whereas the Teichholz method overestimated LV volumes by approximately a factor 2. In comparison with RT3D, LA/Ao underestimated LA size, especially when LA was enlarged.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the effects of varying ring diameter, wire tension, and wire-divergence angle on the axial stiffness characteristics of circular external skeletal fixator single-ring constructs. Study Design-Biomechanical evaluation using circular fixator components and a Delrin cylinder bone model. METHODS: Single ring constructs using two 1.6 mm diameter Kirschner wires to secure a 19 mm Delrin cylinder centered within the ring were examined. Component variables evaluated were ring diameter (50 mm, 66 mm, 84 mm, and 118 mm), wire-divergence angle (30 degrees, 60 degrees, and 90 degrees ), and wire tension (0 kg, 30 kg, 60 kg, and 90 kg). A total of 48 constructs were examined. Rings were rigidly mounted on a universal testing system and the cylinder loaded in axial compression (7.4 N/s) to 220 N. Load/displacement curves were analyzed to determine the following: the displacement (mm) that occurred before the slope of each load/displacement curve became linear, the stiffness (N/mm) of the linear portion of each load/deformation curve, and the total displacement (mm) produced at maximal load. Least-squares linear regression was used to model response variables as linear functions of ring diameter, wire divergence angle, and wire tension. Three-way interactions and 2-way interactions among independent component variables were evaluated first in the modeling process and included in a best model if response variables were found to have statistically significant regression coefficients. The regression coefficients and corresponding standard errors and covariances were used to estimate the maximal effect and standard error attributable to wire divergency angle (change from 30 degrees to 90 degrees ) and wire tension (change from 0 to 90 kg) for each ring diameter. RESULTS: All load/deformation curves had an initial exponential increase in stiffness, with the slope becoming linear at higher loads. The exponential phase was more pronounced in larger-diameter ring constructs and was mitigated by tensioning the wires. Ring diameter had the greatest influence on displacement that occurred before the curve became linear (semipartial r(2) [sp-r2] = .89), stiffness (sp-r2 = .94), and total displacement (sp-r2 = .93). Wire tension exerted a smaller influence on displacement that occurred before the curve became linear (sp-r2 =.06), stiffness (sp-r2 = .03), and total displacement (sp-r2 = .05). Wire divergence angle had a nominal effect on displacement that occurred before the curve became linear (sp-r2 = .0001), on stiffness (sp-r2 = .004), and on total displacement (sp-r2 =.003). CONCLUSIONS: Ring diameter had a profound effect on the axial stiffness characteristic of single ring constructs. Tensioning of the fixation wires can improve the axial stiffness characteristics of these constructs, particularly in larger diameter ring constructs, by mitigating the initial exponential phase of the load/deformation curve. Wire divergence angle had only a nominal differential effect on axial stability. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Understanding how individual component variables and their interactions influence bone segment stability should help surgeons to optimize interfragmentary strain. Tensioning fixation wires is probably unnecessary in 50 mm diameter ring constructs, but assumes greater importance as ring diameter increases.  相似文献
