Previous studies have demonstrated evidence that normal reference ranges for radiographic vertebral heart scale values can vary among dog breeds. The purpose of this retrospective, observational study was to determine whether the normal vertebral heart scale values published by Buchanan and Bücheler for lateral radiographs are applicable to the Norwich terrier. Secondary objectives were to determine if clinical signs of respiratory disease, age, sex, weight, body condition score, recumbency, or thoracic depth‐to‐width ratio had any influence on vertebral heart scale measurements in this breed. The electronic medical record systems of two universities were reviewed and Norwich terriers were included in the study if they had orthogonal thoracic radiographs performed and no historical or radiographic evidence of cardiopulmonary disease. A vertebral heart scale was calculated for each patient. Sixty‐one client‐owned, Norwich terrier dogs with no clinical signs of cardiovascular disease were evaluated. The vertebral heart scale for Norwich terriers without evidence of cardiac disease (10.6 ± 0.6) was found to be significantly greater than the canine reference value of 9.7 ± 0.5 initially established by Buchanan and Bücheler. No significant correlation was found between clinical signs of respiratory disease, sex, age, thoracic depth‐to‐width ratio or lateral recumbency, and vertebral heart scale. Norwich terriers with a body condition score ≥6 had a significantly higher vertebral heart scale than those with a body condition score ≤5. Breed‐specific ranges and body condition scores need to be considered when interpreting vertebral heart scale values for Norwich terriers.  相似文献

The height, width, and cross-sectional area of the vertebral canal and spinal cord along with the area ratio of spinal cord to vertebral canal in the cervical vertebra were evaluated in images obtained using computed tomography (CT). Measurements were taken at the cranial, middle, and caudal point of each cervical vertebra in eight clinically normal small breed dogs (two shih tzu, two miniature schnauzers, and four mixed breed), 10 beagles, and four German shepherds. CT myelography facilitated the delineation of the epidural space, subarachnoid space, and spinal cord except at the caudal portion of the 7th cervical vertebra. The spinal cord had a tendency to have a clear ventral border in the middle portion of the vertebral canal and lateral borders near both end plates. The height, width, and area of the vertebral canal and spinal cord in the cervical vertebra were increased as the size of dog increased. However, the ratio of the spinal cord area to vertebral canal area in the small dogs was higher than that of the larger dogs. Results of the present study could provide basic and quantitative information for CT evaluation of pathologic lesions in the cervical vertebra and spinal cord.  相似文献

Although echocardiography is the gold standard for the diagnosis of cardio‐structural disease, thoracic radiography is a rapid, cost‐effective, and widely accessible method for evaluating cardiac size in dogs. The vertebral heart score (VHS) and the vertebral left atrial size (VLAS) are established as objective measures of cardiomegaly on thoracic radiographs. However, several studies have shown significant variations in the VHS among different breeds. The Chihuahua is predisposed to both congenital and acquired cardiac diseases. The aim of this prospective, single‐center, cross sectional study was thus to evaluate the VHS and the VLAS in healthy adult Chihuahua dogs. A total of 30 Chihuahuas were included. The VHS values in our sample population of Chihuahuas were 10.0 ± 0.6 (95% range, 8.9‐11.0). This was significantly greater than the canine reference value of 9.7 ± 0.5 established by Buchanan and Bücheler (P = .002). The VLAS of Chihuahuas in our study was 1.8 ± 0.2 (95% range, 1.3‐2.1). This was significantly lower than the values previously reported by Malcolm et al (2.07 ± 0.25; P = .0004). The VHS and the VLAS were not influenced by sex, body weight, short or long hair, and body condition score in normal Chihuahuas. Our results indicated that breed‐specific reference values for radiographic VHS and VLAS are needed. In Chihuahuas, the values found in this study can be used as a normal reference in order to help avoid overinterpretation of cardiomegaly in these dogs.  相似文献

The identification and assessment of myocardial failure in canine idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is achieved using a variety of two-dimensional and Doppler echocardiographic techniques. More recently, the availability of tissue Doppler imaging (TDI) has raised the potential for development of new ways of more accurately identifying a disease phenotype. Nevertheless, TDI has not been universally adapted to veterinary clinical cardiology primarily because of the lack of information on its utility in diagnosis. We assessed the application of timing of left heart base descent using TDI in the identification of differences between DCM and normal dogs. The times from the onset of the QRS complex on a simultaneously recorded electrocardiograph to the onset (Q--S'), peak (Q--peak S'), and end (Q--end S') of the systolic velocity peak were measured in the interventricular septum (IVS) and the left ventricular free wall. The duration of S' was also calculated. The Q--S' (FW), Q--end S' (FW), and duration S' (FW) were correlated with ejection fraction in the diseased group (P < 0.05). In addition, Q--S', Q--peak S', Q--end S', and the peak S' velocity were prolonged in the diseased dogs at both the free wall and in the IVS (P < 0.01). The duration of S' was unaffected by disease status. These findings provide insight into the electromechanical uncoupling that occurs in canine DCM and identifies new TDI parameters that can be added to the range of Doppler and echocardiographic parameters used for detecting myocardial failure in the dog.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to assess radiographic heart size in anesthetized dogs, comparing radiographs made with the patient breathing spontaneously to radiographs obtained using positive pressure manual lung inflation. The hypothesis was that manual inflation would cause reduction in the cardiac size. With dogs in right recumbency a radiograph was made at peak spontaneous inspiration followed immediately a radiograph made with application of positive pressure manual inflation of the thorax. Cardiac size was assessed, both subjectively and objectively using the vertebral heart scale (VHS). Two hundred and six dogs were studied. Manual inflation resulted in a significantly greater degree of lung inflation assessed radiographically ( P <0.0001). The subjectively assessed heart size was significantly smaller in radiographs made with manual inflation, leading to different subjective categorization of heart size in 67 (32%) of dogs. The objectively measured VHS was also significantly smaller in the radiographs made using manual inflation by a mean of 0.24 of a vertebral length (95% CL of mean difference: −0.29, −0.19, P <0.0001). A statistically significant reduction in subjective heart size and in VHS occurred with manual inflation of the lungs, and these differences may be clinically significant. Thus, if serial radiographs are obtained to assess cardiac size, the radiographic technique used should be the same.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To assess pre-operative behavioral and physiological characteristics of healthy dogs hospitalized for elective surgery. STUDY DESIGN: Open clinical observational study. ANIMALS: Forty-one bitches hospitalized for elective ovariohysterectomy. METHODS: While undisturbed in a hospital cage, the behavior of the dog was recorded using a video camera and recorder. From the video recordings, various behavioral variables were registered. Simultaneous measurements were made on heart rates and heart rate variability (HRV) by use of an ambulatory electrocardiogram. In addition, the dog's response to human approach was noted. RESULTS: Different behavioral patterns were found in the dogs studied. Thirteen individuals were regarded as highly active, and were seen to bark or howl, manipulate the environment or attempt to flee vigorously. In 13 dogs (passive dogs) none of these activities occurred. Panting and displacement behaviors, such as snout licking, were observed in nearly all the animals monitored. In general, heart rates were higher and HRV lower with the most active individuals; however, the presence of physiological arousal could not be excluded in two animals with passive behaviors. To some extent, the behavior of the dog while undisturbed in the cage was reflected in the responses to a person entering the cage. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The different individual responses detected in this study raise an important question concerning their role and existence throughout the entire peri-operative period, especially during the post-anesthetic recovery phase when behavioral characteristics are commonly used to assess patient welfare. The results also emphasize the need for further investigations to explore the effects of pre-operative stressors on canine surgical patients, and the factors contributing to them.  相似文献

Thoracic radiography is a useful technique for the evaluation of cardiac dimensions, especially when echocardiography is not possible. The vertebral left atrial size (VLAS) has recently been proposed as a new radiographic method for quantifying left atrial dimensions in dogs. The aims of this retrospective, reference interval, observational study were to describe values for VLAS in a group of healthy adult dogs and to compare intraobserver and interobserver agreement for VLAS versus vertebral heart score (VHS) methods. Thoracic radiographs of 80 healthy adult dogs were evaluated. Normal left atrial size was determined based on an echocardiographic left atrial‐to‐aorta ratio < 1.6. The VLAS and vertebral heart score values were measured from right lateral radiographs. The correlations between VLAS, the vertebral heart score, and the left atrial‐to‐aorta ratio were evaluated. The effects of body weight, sex, and age were also tested using regression analyses. The median value of VLAS were 1.9, with a reference interval of 1.4‐2.2. A positive correlation was found between VLAS and vertebral heart score values (r = 0.53; P < .0001). No effect of body weight, sex, and age on VLAS was detected. Excellent intraobserver and interobserver agreements were found for both VLAS and vertebral heart score methods (intraclass correlation coefficients ≥ 0.91). Findings from this sample of healthy dogs indicated that VLAS is a repeatable radiographic method for quantifying left atrial size. Further studies are warranted to evaluate this measure in clinically affected dogs.  相似文献

Objective

To determine the optimal endotracheal tube size in Beagle dogs using thoracic radiography.

Study design

Prospective, randomized, crossover experimental study.

Animals

A total of eight healthy adult Beagle dogs.

Methods

Lateral thoracic radiographs were used to measure the internal tracheal diameter at the thoracic inlet. This measurement was multiplied by 60, 70 and 80% to determine the outer diameter of the endotracheal tube for each dog. In each treatment, medetomidine (5 μg kg?1) was administered intravenously (IV) for premedication. Anesthesia was induced with alfaxalone (2 mg kg?1) IV and maintained with isoflurane. After induction of anesthesia, the resistance to passage of the endotracheal tube through the trachea was scored by a single anesthesiologist. Air leak pressures (Pleak) were measured at intracuff pressures (Pcuff) of 20 and 25 mmHg (27 and 34 cmH2O). The results were analyzed using Friedman tests and repeated measures anova.

Results

There were statistically significant increases in resistance as the endotracheal tube size increased (p = 0.003). When Pcuff was 20 mmHg, mean Pleak for the 60, 70 and 80% treatments were 9.7 ± 6.7, 16.2 ± 4.2 and 17.4 ± 3.9 cmH2O, respectively, but no significant differences were found. When Pcuff was 25 mmHg, mean Pleak for the 60, 70 and 80% treatments were 10.6 ± 8.5, 19.7 ± 4.9 and 20.8 ± 3.6 cmH2O, respectively, and statistically significant increases were found between treatments 60 and 70% (p = 0.011) and between treatments 60 and 80% (p = 0.020). Three dogs in the 80% treatment had bloody mucus on the endotracheal tube cuff after extubation.

Conclusions and clinical relevance

Results based on resistance to insertion of the endotracheal tube and the ability to achieve an air-tight seal suggest that an appropriately sized endotracheal tube for Beagle dogs is 70% of the internal tracheal diameter measured on thoracic radiography.  相似文献

Cervical vertebral malformation is one of the most common causes of ataxia in horses. The most important factor in the diagnosis of cervical vertebral malformation is the identification of cervical vertebral canal stenosis, but published data for minimum sagittal diameter ratios in adult horses are only available for C4-C7 intravertebral sites. Intra- and intervertebral sagittal diameter ratios at C2-C7 were evaluated in 26 ataxic horses, for which a complete clinical and neuropathological evaluation was undertaken. Eight of these horses were diagnosed with cervical vertebral malformation. In these horses the majority of compressive lesions were intervertebral. The mean sagittal diameter ratios of horses with cervical vertebral malformation were significantly smaller than those of horses without cervical vertebral malformation, and for an individual horse in our study, the site with the smallest intervertebral sagittal diameter ratio was always the site at which the spinal cord was compressed. Mean sagittal diameter ratio intravertebral site measurements of horses with cervical vertebral malformation were smaller than those of horses without cervical vertebral malformation; however, the site of compression could not be predicted from the data. For our dataset, horses with a sagittal diameter ratio of < or = 0.485 at any inter- or intravertebral site could be correctly classified as having cervical vertebral malformation, and sagittal diameter ratio measurements were an effective tool to identify at least one site of compression in an individual case.  相似文献

An increased tracheal bifurcation angle on the dorsoventral projection is described as a sign of left atrium enlargement in dogs, with a normal range of 60-90 degrees reported. However in people, this angle is a poor indicator of left atrial size. Our purpose was to evaluate the value of the tracheal bifurcation angle for differentiating normal from enlarged left atrium in dogs. Dorsoventral radiographs and echocardiograms of 33 healthy and 73 dogs with confirmed degenerative myxomatous mitral valve disease were evaluated. Left atrial size was classified according to the echocardiographic left atrium to aorta ratio, as normal, mildly, moderately, or severely enlarged. Independent samples t-tests were used to compare the bifurcation angle between groups. A significant difference was observed between the angle of dogs with normal left atrium (68.1 +/- 8.5 degrees, range: 51.3-92.4 degrees) and dogs with enlarged left atrium (75.8 +/- 8.2 degrees, range: 57.3-91.7 degrees). A significant difference was also noted between the angle of normal dogs and those with moderate (75.5 +/- 6.8 degrees, range: 62.8-88.7 degrees) and severe (80.4 +/- 7.7 degrees, range: 64.7-91.7 degrees) left atrial enlargement, as well as between dogs with mild (70.7 +/- 7.2 degrees, range: 57.3-89.9 degrees) and severe enlargement. Using two discriminators, 85.1 degrees and 76.6 degrees, the bifurcation angle had a specificity of 92.6% and 88.9%, respectively, for identifying left atrial enlargement, and a sensitivity of 15.4% and 40.4%. Although significant differences were observed between dogs with normal and increased left atrial size, the large degree of overlap in the range of bifurcation angles and its poor sensitivity make the measurement of this angle of little value for diagnosing left atrial enlargement.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to establish heart rate as a measure of energy expenditure in large active kennel dogs (28 ± 3 kg bw). Therefore, the heart rate (HR)oxygen consumption () relationship was analysed in Foxhound‐Boxer‐Ingelheim‐Labrador cross‐breds (FBI dogs) at rest and graded levels of exercise on a treadmill up to 60–65% of maximal aerobic capacity. To test for effects of training, HR and were measured in female dogs, before and after a training period, and after an adjacent training pause to test for reversibility of potential effects. Least squares regression was applied to describe the relationship between HR and . The applied training had no statistically significant effect on the HR regression. A general regression line from all data collected was prepared to establish a general predictive equation for energy expenditure from HR in FBI dogs. The regression equation established in this study enables fast estimation of energy requirement for running activity. The equation is valid for large dogs weighing around 30 kg that run at ground level up to 15 km/h with a heart rate maximum of 190 bpm irrespective of the training level.  相似文献

Orthopaedic diseases are common in the pelvic limbs of dogs, and reference values for large muscle groups of the pelvic limb may aid in diagnosis such diseases. As such, the objective of this study was to compare the large muscle groups of the pelvic limb in seven breeds of dogs. A total of 126 dogs from different breeds were included, and the widths of the quadriceps, hamstring and gastrocnemius muscles were measured from images of the lateral radiographies. The width of the quadriceps was not different between the breeds, but the widths of the hamstring and gastrocnemius muscles were significantly different between the breeds. The widest hamstring and gastrocnemius muscles were seen in the Rottweilers and the Boxers, respectively. The narrowest hamstring and gastrocnemius muscles were seen in the Belgian Malinois and the Golden retrievers, respectively. All ratios between the measured muscles differed significantly between the breeds. Doberman pinschers and Belgian Malinois had the highest ratio of gastrocnemius width:hamstring width. Doberman pinschers had also the highest ratio of quadriceps width:hamstring width. German shepherds had the highest ratio of gastrocnemius width:quadriceps width. The lowest ratios of quadriceps width:hamstring width were determined in the German shepherds. The ratios of the muscle widths may be used as reference values to assess muscular atrophy or hypertrophy in cases of bilateral or unilateral orthopaedic diseases of the pelvic limbs. Further studies are required to determine the widths and ratios of the large muscle groups of the pelvic limbs in other dog breeds.  相似文献

Objective To perform a randomized, placebo‐controlled, masked clinical trial using a cross‐over design to determine the effect of oral diphenhydramine on aqueous tear production in normal dogs. Animals studied Seventeen dogs with normal ophthalmic examinations. Procedures Baseline tear production was established for each dog by performing Schirmer tear test I (STT I). Dogs received 20‐day treatment courses of both oral diphenhydramine and placebo solutions with a 10‐day washout period between treatment periods. Each dog was randomly assigned to receive diphenhydramine or placebo at the outset of the study. Measurements of STT I values were measured at regular intervals during the study and were conducted at the same time of day throughout the study to control for diurnal variations in tear production. The significance of the impact of diphenhydramine treatment on the quantity of aqueous tear production, as determine by STT results over time, was evaluated using regression analysis with appropriate transformation. Results Statistical comparisons at each measurement time, including baseline measurements between control and treatment groups, revealed no significant differences. Mean STT I levels also did not differ significantly at any measurement time compared to baseline for treatment or control groups. Conclusions Short‐term administration of oral diphenhydramine does not result in a significant decrease in aqueous tear production in normal dogs.  相似文献

Computed tomographic (CT) venography of the cervical vertebral canal was performed in six, clinically normal, adult mixed-breed dogs from 14 to 23 kg. After dogs were euthanized and saline perfused, a gelatin and iothalamate mixture was injected into the right external jugular vein. Contiguous, 4-mm-thick CT images were obtained with dogs in sternal recumbency. Dogs were kept in the same position as for the CT scan and frozen to approximately -8 degrees C. All post-contrast CT images were analyzed using similar bone window and level settings. Additional multiplanar reformatted dorsal images were obtained in all dogs. The frozen cadavers were sectioned through the cervical region extending from the occiput to T1 at approximately 8-mm intervals. The frozen sections were then compared with the CT images. The CT appearance of the normal cervical vertebral venous system was described and illustrated. Components such as the internal vertebral venous plexus, interarcuate veins, intervertebral veins, and vertebral veins were clearly identified on the CT images.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo compare ultrasonography with computed tomography (CT) for assessment of tracheal diameter as a feasibility study for endotracheal tube selection.Study designProspective study.AnimalsA total of nine Beagle dogs with a median (interquartile range) weight of 7.4 (7.2–7.7) kg.MethodsTracheal diameter measurements were obtained at two locations: 1 cm proximal to caudal border of the cricoid cartilage (sublaryngeal; SL) and dorsal to above cranial border of the manubrium (thoracic inlet; TI). For CT, dogs were anesthetized with propofol and sevoflurane, in sternal recumbency, and measurements obtained after controlled ventilation–induced apnea and the endotracheal tube cuff was deflated. Transverse diameter, right and left 45° oblique diameters were measured. For ultrasonography, unsedated dogs were standing with slight neck extension, and images obtained in ventrodorsal, 45° right and left oblique ways after expiration. Diameters between the tracheal lumen mucosal borders were measured. The degree of agreement between the tracheal diameters measured at SL and TI locations with CT (TDCT-SL and TDCT-TI) and ultrasonography (TDUS-SL and TDUS-TI) was verified using the Bland-Altman method.ResultsThe agreement between the measurements obtained with CT and ultrasonography was revealed by Bland-Altman analyses, although ultrasonography tended to slightly underestimate the tracheal diameter. Conclusions and clinical relevanceUltrasonography can be applied for tracheal diameter measurement. Although further studies are required, an endotracheal tube selection method, using ultrasonography, could be proposed.  相似文献
