A 12-year-old spayed female Labrador retriever was presented with forebrain
signs. Brain MRI revealed a huge cystic lesion with the thickened falx in the frontal
region. The brain parenchyma surrounding the lesion showed significant signs of a mass
effect and also increased intracranial pressure. However, the dog suddenly became lucid
after about two weeks, and an MRI scan one month after the initial study revealed a
dramatically shrunken cystic lesion. The dog survived for over a year until it was
euthanized for other reasons, and the brain lesion was diagnosed as a cystic meningioma
histologically. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first report that described the
reduction of the cystic lesion of a cystic meningioma in dogs. 相似文献

Epithelial membrane antigen (EMA) is one of the most widely used diagnostic immunohistochemical markers for human meningioma. To date, no published study on EMA expression in formalin‐fixed paraffin‐embedded (FFPE) tissue samples of canine meningioma is available. Here, we describe the results of an immunohistochemical study on 25 FFPE canine meningiomas using a monoclonal anti‐human EMA antibody. All meningiomas showed positive staining for EMA with cytoplasmic pattern, in nine cases associated with membranous staining. Area and intensity of staining were highly variable among cases. No clear relationships between tumour subtype/grade and area/intensity of staining were found. However, epithelial‐like patterns showed a higher affinity for EMA compared to the mesenchymal one. The present study provides the basis to explore the potential diagnostic application of this marker in canine meningioma. To investigate EMA expression in other central nervous system tumours of dogs are necessary to assess the specificity of this marker. 相似文献

This study describes the neuropathologic features of normal canine brain ablated with non-thermal irreversible electroporation (N-TIRE). The parietal cerebral cortices of four dogs were treated with N-TIRE using a dose-escalation protocol with an additional dog receiving sham treatment. Animals were allowed to recover following N-TIRE ablation and the effects of treatment were monitored with clinical and magnetic resonance imaging examinations. Brains were subjected to histopathologic and ultrastructural assessment along with Bcl-2, caspase-3, and caspase-9 immunohistochemical staining following sacrifice 72 h post-treatment. Adverse clinical effects of N-TIRE were only observed in the dog treated at the upper energy tier. MRI and neuropathologic examinations indicated that N-TIRE ablation resulted in focal regions of severe cytoarchitectural and blood-brain-barrier disruption. Lesion size correlated to the intensity of the applied electrical field. N-TIRE-induced lesions were characterized by parenchymal necrosis and hemorrhage; however, large blood vessels were preserved. A transition zone containing parenchymal edema, perivascular inflammatory cuffs, and reactive gliosis was interspersed between the necrotic focus and normal neuropil. Apoptotic labeling indices were not different between the N-TIRE-treated and control brains. This study identified N-TIRE pulse parameters that can be used to safely create circumscribed foci of brain necrosis while selectively preserving major vascular structures. 相似文献

Treatment protocols, treatment planning methods and tumour types in studies evaluating radiotherapy for canine brain tumours have been varied. This case series retrospectively evaluated the outcome of definitive, three‐dimensional conformal radiation therapy (3D‐CRT) as either a sole modality or as an adjuvant to surgery in 31 dogs diagnosed with meningioma by histopathology (n = 10) or cross‐sectional imaging of the head (n = 21, assessed independently by two board certified radiologists). Prescribed dose ranged from 45 to 54 Gy in 2.5 to 3 Gy fractions. Median overall survival was 577 days (interquartile range = 272–829 days; range = 30–1942 days) when all deaths were considered and 906 days (interquartile range = 336–912 days; range = 101–1942 days) when only dogs dying due to meningioma were considered. No significant difference in survival time was detected for the defined clinical or imaging findings or between treatment with radiotherapy alone versus adjuvant radiotherapy, suggesting that 3D‐CRT may be a viable alternative to surgery. 相似文献

Samples were obtained from clinically normal dogs before and after ACTH stimulation and dexamethasone suppression tests. The test kit Enzymun-Test (Boehringer Mannheim) for determining cortisol concentrations in human plasma was used in connection with the analyser system Enzymun-Test (Boehringer Mannheim) System ES300 following the manufacturer's instructions. The intra-assay and inter-assay coefficients of variation were 1.28% and 5.64%, respectively. The mean recovery when assaying samples with a cortisol content of more than 100 nmol/L was 95.41%, but this percentage decreased in samples with lower cortisol levels. The sensitivity of the assay was 2.76 nmol/L. The results of the ACTH stimulation and dexamethasone suppression tests were similar to those published previously. The ELISA method evaluated allows a precise and sensitive determination of cortisol concentrations in canine plasma samples. The major drawback observed was the loss of accuracy at low cortisol concentrations. Since the assay tends then to report lower cortisol concentrations, the generally accepted concentration of 40 nmol/L may not be suitable as the cutoff value in dexamethasone suppression tests. 相似文献

This case report presents a 14‐month‐old female Poodle mix with acute megakaryoblastic leukemia based on a marked thrombocytosis, abnormal platelet morphology, circulating dwarf megakaryocytes, and blast cells in the blood. Bone marrow abnormalities included dysmegakaryopoiesis dygranulopoiesis, and an increased number of blast cells was observed in the blood. Extensive leukemic involvement was also found in the liver, spleen, lymph nodes, lungs, kidneys, and brain. The cytopathologic features of the abnormal circulating cells were highly suggestive of being megakaryocytic in origin, which was supported by negative myeloperoxidase staining and positive von Willebrand factor staining on immunocytochemistry (ICC). The neoplastic cells were also CD61 positive and had variable von Willebrand factor expression on ICC. Although there were only 25% blast cells in the bone marrow, which theoretically supported myelodysplastic syndrome, the hypothesis that this case represented acute myeloid leukemia of megakaryoblastic origin was confirmed by the continuous increase in circulating blast cell numbers during follow‐up visits and the extensive leukemic involvement of parenchymal organs. 相似文献

The aim of the present study was to evaluate analytical performance using total error criteria of a commercial enzyme immunometric assay for the determination of endogenous canine thyrotropin (TSH). The allowable total error for this assay (22.6%) was estimated using previously reported data on biological variation. Inaccuracy and imprecision of the assay (0% and 5.7% for the low control material; 6.8% and 3.0% for the high control material) were estimated by measuring the same lot of control material for 21 consecutive weeks, during which time the assay was considered stable and in control. Analytical performance was assessed using a MEDx chart, a graphical tool for comparing inaccuracy and imprecision, with an analytical quality requirement stated in the form of allowable total error. The results of the present study showed that the canine TSH assay had good to excellent analytical performance. 相似文献

Clinical and radiographic examination of the cervical spine has been of increasing interest in the prepurchase examination and clinical work-up conducted for horses. The objective of this study was to describe a grading system useful for evaluating all the cervical articular process joints (cAPJs). Additionally, the findings of the cervical radiographs (occiput, cAPJ and intercentral joint space grading, intra- and intervertebral sagittal ratios, and intervertebral disc width measurements) were reported, and their association with clinical complaints in a large group of Dutch Warmblood horses (n = 598) were investigated. Significant associations were found between cAPJ radiographic grades and clinical complaints using the chi-squared test (C2-3 [P = 0.01], C5-6 [P = 0.006], C6-7 [P < 0.001], and C7-T1 [P = 0.02]). Higher occiput grades were significantly associated with clinical complaints (chi-squared test, P = 0.005). A large variability was found for intra- and intervertebral ratios and minimum intercentral joint space in the control group, but no significant association between intercentral joint space and clinical complaints was observed using the Kruskal–Wallis test followed by post hoc testing with the Wilcoxon rank sum test with a Bonferroni correction. The main limitations of this study were that only information regarding localisation was used for the statistical analyses, without any other details of the clinical complaints. Furthermore, clinical records were retrospectively reviewed, and a bias towards cervical findings in the clinical data recordings should be considered. It was concluded that knowledge of the distribution of the radiographic findings evaluated in this study and their associated clinical relevance can be useful in reaching a science-based diagnosis in daily practice.

The size of canine focal liver lesions (FLLs) is known to be one of the predicting criteria for malignancy. However, there are discrepancies for the measurement of maximum lesion size, resulting in contradicting results among studies and incidences of false positive outcomes. Thus far, the morphometric changes of FLLs for distinguishing malignancy from benignancy remains undocumented. This study aimed to investigate morphometric characteristics of FLLs using computed tomography (CT). CT images of 40 dogs with histopathological confirmation of 49 liver lesions, including 39 hepatocellular carcinomas and 10 nodular hyperplasias were retrospectively reviewed. The morphometric parameters including size (long and short axis diameters measured on transverse image), shape (measured by long to short axis (L/S) ratio), volume, and surface appearance of a liver lesion were evaluated using univariate and stepwise multivariate analyses, respectively. The results of univariate analysis showed that long and short axis diameters, L/S ratio, volume, and surface appearance of a lesion were significantly different between hepatocellular carcinomas and nodular hyperplasias. Multivariate analysis revealed that short axis diameter (>3.30 cm; odds ratio (OR): 36.1, 95% confidence interval (CI): 3.36–387.05, P=0.0031) and L/S ratio (>1.23; OR: 18.1, 95% CI: 1.61–205.12, P=0.0191) were independent predictors of malignancy, with the area under the curve of 0.9154. These results suggest that the combination of short axis diameter and L/S ratio is a promising tool for predicting liver malignancy with outstanding discriminating ability. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: Diagnosis of central nervous system (CNS) abnormalities in dogs can be challenging antemortem. Historically, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis has been used for routine diagnostic evaluation of animals with suspected neurologic disease; however, with increasing availability of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, the need for concurrent CSF analysis may be questioned. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to retrospectively assess and compare the diagnostic information contributed from MR imaging and CSF analysis in a population of dogs presenting with neurologic disease. METHODS: Results of concurrent MR imaging and CSF analysis were evaluated in dogs presented for neurologic diseases. Based on clinical diagnosis, the sensitivity of CSF analysis and MR imaging for detecting a nervous system abnormality was calculated. Dogs with diagnoses confirmed by other diagnostic modalities were also evaluated separately. RESULTS: A total of 256 dogs were included in the study. For clinical diagnoses in which abnormalities were expected, MR imaging abnormalities were found in 89% and CSF abnormalities in 75% of dogs; CSF abnormalities were more common than MR imaging abnormalities only in inflammatory CNS disease. The majority of CSF abnormalities were nonspecific; an etiologic diagnosis was determined in only 2% of CSF samples. MR imaging excelled in detecting structural disorders, revealing 98% of vertebral abnormalities. In confirmed cases (n = 55), 76% of MR images and 9% of CSF samples were diagnostic. When intervertebral disk disease (IVDD) and vertebral malformation were excluded from analysis (n = 16 remaining), 25% of MR images and 6% of CSF cytology results were highly indicative of the confirmed diagnoses; CSF titer results provided the diagnosis in 25% of these cases. CONCLUSION: CSF analysis may not be necessary when MR findings of IVDD or vertebral malformation/instability are obvious; however, when the cause of neurologic disorder is uncertain, concurrent MR imaging and CSF analysis provides the greatest assistance in establishing a clinical diagnosis. 相似文献
