Seed starch content (SSC) greatly affects the taste, flavour and processing properties of soy foods. The objective in this study was to identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) for SSC in soybean. A total in 169 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from a cross in ‘Williams 82’ and ‘PI 366121’ were grown for three consecutive years. The SSC of the RILs displayed continuous variation with transgressive segregation and hence amenable for QTL mapping. Nine significant QTL exhibiting 5.6–11.3% of the total phenotypic variation (PVE) were identified. The QTL qSTR06_2 showed highest PVE (9.1–11.3%) at LOD values of 4.25–5.39. No stable QTL over 3 years were identified, indicating strong environmental influence on SSC. The QTL qSTR11_1 and qSTR20_1 were found to colocalize with some of the previously reported QTL for sucrose content in soybean, implying the interrelationship between starch and sucrose biosynthesis. As the carbohydrate components may affect key constituents such as oil and protein in soybean seed, findings of the study may be useful in breeding soybeans with improved seed composition.  相似文献

Cassava brown streak disease (CBSD) is an economically important virus disease causing significant losses to cassava root yield and quality in east, central and southern Africa. Breeding for resistance in cassava requires an understanding of the underlying genetic control of CBSD resistance. Sources of CBSD resistance are available but little is known on the value of those varieties as parents for CBSD resistance breeding. Two resistant and two susceptible varieties were crossed in a half diallel design and 35 F1 progeny from each of the six families, plus parents, were screened at two locations in a randomised complete block design with four replications in warm sub-humid environments of coastal Tanzania in 2008. Screening for CBSD field resistance was done using disease severity scoring on a scale of 1–5. Significant variations in disease severity were observed for crosses, general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) at both locations. The CBSD shoot symptom severity scores ranged from 1 to 4.4 while root necrosis ranged from 1.3 to 4.5. The contribution of GCA to the total sum of squares of crosses for disease scores ranged from 86.9 to 95.2 % compared to SCA that ranged from 4.8 to 14.2 %. Additive gene effects were more important than non-additive effects indicating that CBSD resistance is genetically determined and that selection should be successful to improve resistance. Selection of parents with good GCA effects will be important for success in CBSD resistance breeding.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to identify quantitative trait loci (QTLs) controlling 100‐seed weight in soybean using 188 recombinant inbred lines (RIL) derived from a cross of PI 483463 and ‘Hutcheson’. The parents and RILs were grown for 4 years (2010–2013), and mature, dry seeds were used for 100‐seed weight measurement. The variance components of genotype (a), environment (e) and a × e interactions for seed weight were highly significant. The QTL analysis identified 14 QTLs explaining 3.83–12.23% of the total phenotypic variation. One of the QTLs, qSW17‐2, was found to be the stable QTL, being identified in all the environments with high phenotypic variation as compared to the other QTLs. Of the 14 QTLs, 10 QTLs showed colocalization with the seed weight QTLs identified in earlier reports, and four QTLs, qSW5‐1, qSW14‐1, qSW15‐1 and qSW15‐2, found to be the novel QTLs. A two‐dimensional genome scan revealed 11 pairs of epistatic QTLs across 11 chromosomes. The QTLs identified in this study may be useful in genetic improvement of soybean seed weight.  相似文献

Fishing constitutes a key source of income and food for rural communities worldwide. This is the case in predominantly rural Myanmar (World Fish, 2019), particularly in the Ayeyarwady (Irrawaddy) River Delta. Fishing has long been a central livelihood strategy and valuable source of food security in the Delta, and now also generates a substantial contribution to the gross domestic product. However, the livelihood practices of the fishers, particularly small‐scale fishers, are largely ‘invisible’ in the literature and policy. In this article, we advance understanding of the significant but understudied livelihoods of small‐scale fishers through interviews with fishers and a range of other actors in 2018. Taking a careful examination of the challenges, practices and responses of fishers in the Delta, our research underlines that fishers are important actors in the ‘making’ of the Delta as a geographical scale and concept, yet they are being pushed out of the very landscape they have helped co‐create and have lived in for generations. At this crucial point in Myanmar's development and change, we contend that a better understanding of the livelihoods of fishing households, as some of the nation's most vulnerable, is important for inclusive policy development, economic reforms and research strategy going forward.  相似文献

‘Jalo Vermelho’ is a large seeded Andean landrace of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) that constitutes an important source of anthracnose resistance, disease caused by Colletotrichum lindemuthianum. This landrace has different resistance spectrum, when compared with cultivars of Andean origin, indicating the presence of an anthracnose‐resistant gene different from Co1 locus. This anthracnose resistance was characterized by inheritance and allelism tests were carried out on the following genes: Co1, Co12, Co13, Co15, Co2, Co3, Co4, Co5, Co6, Co7, Co9, Co10, Co11 and Co‐13. Resistance to races 23, 55, 89 and 453 in ‘Jalo Vermelho’ was conditioned by a single dominant gene. Allelism tests in F2 populations demonstrated that ‘Jalo Vermelho’ carries a dominant gene located at a distinct locus, differing from previously characterized genes. Based on its independence from previously described loci, the authors propose that the ‘Jalo Vermelho’s gene should be named Co12. This new gene is a valuable source of resistance to anthracnose which can be transferred to commercial cultivars to enhance the effectiveness of resistance gene pyramiding in bean breeding programmes.  相似文献

Abstract: Harold Brookfield's contribution to population studies has not been given much prominence in the literature. In this paper, I revisit a number of his major papers written in the 1960s and 1970s in two contexts: first, with reference to his response to the intellectual debates that were transforming the discipline of geography at this time, and second, with reference to my experiences as a postgraduate student at the Australian National University, in the ‘Brookfield school’ and, later, as a research colleague in Brookfield's interdisciplinary island ecosystems project in Fiji. Although Brookfield increasingly saw himself as an ‘outsider’ in the changing mainstream of human geography, he remained an extremely influential writer for successive generations of geographers who chose to work on population issues in the western Pacific. His research contribution was immense, and remains relevant, which is more than can be said for much that was written by those ‘inside’ the discipline in the heady years of intellectual foment that characterised the social sciences, including geography, in last quarter of the twentieth century.  相似文献

Lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.) is an important cool‐season legume that can be severely damaged by rust (Uromyces viciae‐fabae (Pers.) Schröt.) in many parts of the world. In this work, a collection of L. culinaris germplasm accessions was screened under growth chamber conditions for response to U. viciae‐fabae. Several sources of incomplete resistance have been identified, both of hypersensitive and of non‐hypersensitive nature. Incomplete hypersensitive resistance was due to a late‐acting host cell necrosis that resulted in an intermediate infection type (IT). Incomplete non‐hypersensitive resistance was due to a hampered cell penetration not associated with host cell necrosis, reducing the number of haustoria per colony and therefore hindering the growth of the colony and reducing and retarding disease development in spite of a high IT.  相似文献

This paper investigates the adaptation processes with reference to the narrative analysis of human–environment interactions in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta. From the political ecology perspective, it focuses on the discourses of the power relationships embedded within the ‘state‐society‐flood’ nexus over the course of its ‘opening‐up and closing‐off’ processes (e.g. excavating large‐scale canals for human settlements and agricultural expansion (opening‐up) and human interventions into natural systems through water control structures (closing‐off)). Drawing on empirical data gathered from 33 interviews and nine focus group discussions in three study areas and relevant literature, the paper argues that human interactions with the flood environments are intertwined with adjustments of adaptation patterns as evidenced through three periods: free adaptation (pre‐1975), transitional adaptation (1976–2010) and forced adaptation (after 2010). These processes have witnessed a gradual power shift in the ‘state‐society’ relations in manipulating floods, which moves from the top‐down towards a more collaborative fashion. By unravelling the political ecology of the ‘state‐society‐flood’ nexus, this paper exhibits the skewed development in the delta, which is largely bound to short‐term development planning to prioritise local socio‐economic and political objectives. The paper contributes important policy implications for achieving socially just and environmentally sustainable development in the delta.  相似文献

Soybean mosaic virus (SMV) can cause serious yield losses in soybean. Soybean cultivar ‘RN‐9’ is resistant to 15 of 21 SMV strains. To well‐characterize this invaluable broad‐spectrum SMV‐resistance, populations (F1, F2 and F2:3) derived from resistant (R) × susceptible (S) and R × R crosses were tested for SMV‐SC18 resistance. Genetic analysis revealed that SC18 resistance in ‘RN‐9’ plus two elite SMV‐resistant genotypes (‘Qihuang No.1’ and ‘Kefeng No.1’) are controlled by independently single dominant genes. Linkage analysis showed that the resistance of ‘RN‐9’ to SMV strains SC10, SC14, SC15 and SC18 is controlled by more than one gene(s). Moreover, Rsc10‐r and Rsc18‐r were both positioned between the two simple sequence repeats markers Satt286 and Satt277, while Rsc14‐r was fine‐mapped in 136.8‐kb genomic region containing sixteen genes, flanked by BARCSOYSSR_06_0786 and BARCSOYSSR_06_0790 at genetic distances of 3.79 and 4.14 cM, respectively. Allelic sequence comparison showed that Cytochrome P450‐encoding genes (Glyma.06g176000 and Glyma.06g176100) likely confer the resistance to SC14 in ‘RN‐9’. Our results would facilitate the breeding of broad‐spectrum and durable SMV resistance in soybeans.  相似文献

The inheritance of the red colour character in European pear (Pyrus communis L.) was studied over 3 years in seven progeny obtained by using the cultivars ‘Max Red Bartlett’, ‘Cascade’ and ‘California’ as red‐skinned fruit parental lines. One of these progeny (derived from the cross ‘Abbé Fétel’ × ‘Max Red Bartlett’, a red mutation of ‘Bartlett’) was already used to construct two linkage maps and, being ‘red colour’ a monogenic dominant trait, it was possible to locate it as morphological marker in the linkage group 4 of ‘Max Red Bartlett’. For the first time, this trait has been mapped out of linkage group 9 in a species belonging to the Maloideae subfamily moreover in a mutated sport. An improved knowledge of the genetic basis of production and accumulation of red pigments in the fruit skin will better support the pear breeding programmes aimed to select new cultivars carrying this appealing trait.  相似文献

Niger (Guizotia abyssinica (L. f.) Cass. (Asteraceae) is a strictly self-incompatible crop species with a sporophytic self-incompatibility mechanism. This characteristic presents a number of difficulties in plant improvement programs. The objective of this study was to determine the number and distribution of S-alleles in Ethiopian niger populations and to identify and develop self-compatible genotypes with various associated advantages. Several aspects of self-incompatibility in niger were compared in self- and cross-pollination experiments in which seed-set was considered to be a measure of compatibility. Our results indicate the presence of a minimum of ten self-incompatibility alleles and one self-compatibility allele at the S-locus in niger. Most of these alleles behave differently in the pollen and pistil. About two-thirds of the allelic interactions in both the pollen and pistil were dominant/recessive, and one-third were codominant. The reciprocal cross-pollinations (RCPs) resulted in progeny with similar levels of compatibility within and among populations because of a wide distribution of S-alleles in the populations and, consequently, low population differentiation at the S-locus. An analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) revealed that only 2% of the total genetic variation at the S-locus differentiates the populations. In conclusion, self-compatible genotypes from the Ethiopian niger gene pool have been identified and developed for the first time.  相似文献

We investigated changes in concentrations of abscisic (ABA) and salicylic acid (SA), phenolic compounds and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) activity in relation to cold-induced tolerance of four androgenic genotypes of Festulolium ( Festuca  ×  Lolium hybrids ) to frost and to the snow mould fungus Microdochium nivale . Cold acclimation increased frost tolerance and resistance to snow mould. Resistant genotypes were characterized by higher ABA concentrations during the first 54 h of cold acclimation and lower concentrations of SA than susceptible genotypes. After cold acclimation, the content of phenolics was significantly lower in genotypes tolerant to frost and M. nivale infection than in susceptible genotypes, while PAL activity was significantly higher. Signalling networks controlling cold acclimation to frost (abiotic) and mould infection (biotic) appears to involve increases in foliar concentrations of ABA and decreases in the SA level during successful cold acclimation. Higher PAL activity and lower concentrations of phenolic compounds also appear to be associated with enhanced tolerance to frost and fungal attack.  相似文献

Prunus mandshurica [(Maxim.) Koehne] from Central Asia is a species related to apricot and grown in China and Mongolia. This species has been used in apricot breeding as a source of frost resistance. In addition, P. mandshurica has been suggested as the possible origin of some North American apricot cultivars resistant to sharka (Plum pox virus, PPV). The aim of this work was to transmit the resistance to PPV from P. mandshurica to the Spanish apricot cultivar ‘Currot’ by traditional crossing. The resistance to a Dideron PPV isolate of the descendants of P. mandshuricaבCurrot’ and their progenitors was evaluated under controlled conditions in a greenhouse. The results showed the susceptibility of both, the progenitors and the offspring to PPV, as being much higher than in other apricot seedlings. The results showed that the P. mandshurica accession studied is not a good progenitor in breeding apricot for PPV resistance, but just the opposite. The possible role of P. mandshurica as a source of resistance in apricot resistant cultivars is questioned.  相似文献

The peach root‐knot nematode, Meloidogyne floridensis (MF), infects majority of available nematode‐resistant peach rootstocks which are mostly derived from peach (Prunus persica) and Chinese wild peach (P. davidiana). Interspecific hybridization of peach with its wild relative, Kansu peach (P. kansuensis), offers potential for broadening the resistance spectrum in standard peach rootstocks. We investigated the inheritance of resistance to MF in segregating populations of peach (‘Okinawa’ or ‘Flordaguard’) × P. kansuensis. A total of 379 individuals from 13 F2 and BC1F1 families were challenged with a pathogenic MF isolate “MFGnv14” and were classified as resistant (R) or susceptible (S) based on root galling intensity. Segregation analyses in F2 progeny revealed the involvement of a major locus with a dominant or recessive allele determining resistance in progeny segregating 3R:1S and 1R:3S, respectively. Testcrosses with a homozygous‐susceptible peach genotype (‘Flordaguard’ or ‘UFSharp’) confirmed P. kansuensis as a source of new resistance and the heterozygous allelic status of P. kansuensis at the locus conferring resistance to MF. We propose a single‐locus dominant/recessive model for the inheritance of resistance.  相似文献

Inheritance of resistance to Karnal bunt was investigated in the crosses of four resistant synthetic hexaploid wheats (SH; Triticum turgidum×T. tauschii) and two susceptible T. aestivum cultivars. The resistance was dominant or partly dominant over susceptibility. The SH cultivars Chen/T. tauschii (205) and Chen/T. tauschii (224) have single dominant resistance genes which could be allelic to each other. ‘Altar 84’/T. tauschii (219) appeared to have two dominant genes for resistance. ‘Duergand’T. tauschii (214) possessed two complementary dominant genes for resistance. The work is being extended to involve diverse Karnal bunt-resistant SH and bread wheat cultivars.  相似文献

A total of 259 accessions of wild Triticum species originating from different countries, along with 91 triticale (6×)× bread wheat true-breeding derivatives, two bread wheat, and three triticale cultivars were screened for resistance to the Russian wheat aphid, a serious insect pest of the wheat crop. Twenty-four entries with low damage ratings on the basis of amount of leaf rolling and leaf chlorosis were retested along with resistant and susceptible controls. On the basis of leaf roll damage ratings, eight entries including four Triticum monococcum var. boeoticum (T. boeoticum), one T. monococcum var. monococcum (T. monococcum), two T. timopheevii var. araraticum (T. araraticum), and one triticale cultivar were significantly superior to ‘Karl’ (susceptible control) wheat. Among these, four accessions — three T. boeoticum and one T. araraticum— were significantly superior to all other entries and were equal to the resistant control (PI 372129) in resistance rating based on leaf rolling and leaf chlorosis (except T. boeoticum TA 202). The leaf chlorosis damage rating of all accessions were significantly lower than that of the susceptible check.  相似文献
