A terminal sire Composite population was formed by mating Columbia rams to Hampshire-Suffolk crossbred ewes. Subsequent generations were produced by inter se mating. The objective was to compare Composite sheep to purebred Suffolks for numerous performance traits. Young ewes lambing at 1 yr of age were evaluated separately from mature ewes (2, 3, 4, and 5 yr old) of each population. Composite and Suffolk populations did not differ significantly in components of litter weaning weight per young ewe joined. Mature Composite ewes produced more wool than Suffolk ewes. Fertility of mature ewes did not differ significantly between populations. The greater prolificacy (P less than .01) of mature Suffolk ewes was offset by a lower survival to weaning (P less than .01), particularly for twin-born lambs. Consequently, mature Composite and Suffolk ewes did not differ for number weaned and litter weaning weight per ewe joined. The average birth weight of lambs born to young and mature Composite ewes was greater (P less than .02) than the average birth weight of Suffolk lambs. The average weaning weight of lambs born to young Composite ewes was greater (P less than .05) than that of lambs born to young Suffolk ewes. Breed differences were not detected for preweaning daily gains, weaning weights, and postweaning daily gains of ewe lambs born to mature ewes. Six ewe genotypes, generated by mating Coopworth (C), Polypay (P), and Suffolk (S) rams to Polypay and Coopworth-type (Ct) ewes, were exposed to Hampshire rams for spring lambing from 1986 through 1990. Data from 1,092 exposures and 1,044 resultant lambings were used to analyze reproductive traits and lamb growth rates. Overall conception rate averaged 95% and ranged from 93% for S x Ct ewes to 97% for P x Ct ewes. Mean litter size at birth averaged 1.63 and ranged from 1.45 for C x C ewes to 1.75 for S x P ewes. Ewes from P dams had higher mean litter size (P less than .01) than those from Ct dams (1.73 vs 1.54), but differences between sire breeds were not significant. Incidence of lambing assistance was similar for ewes producing single or multiple lambs. Lamb birth weight influenced the level of assistance rendered to single-bearing but not to multiple-bearing ewes. Lambing assistance was not related to lamb survival, probably because the high surveillance level minimized trauma before assistance was rendered. Incidence of required assistance declined over subsequent parities. Lamb birth weights were affected by ewe genotype and increased with increasing ewe age. Survival of single-born lambs averaged 94% and was not affected by dam genotype. Survival of twins averaged 85%, ranging from 79% for lambs from S x Ct ewes to 89% for lambs from P x P ewes. Suffolk-sired ewes produced the heaviest mean birth and weaning weights for both singles and twins. Coopworth-sired ewes weaned heavier single lambs but lighter twins than P-sired ewes.  相似文献

Season of lambing and other environmental effects on ewe performance were analyzed for purebred Finnsheep (F), Rambouillet (R), Dorset (D), Targhee (T) and Suffolk (S) and the generations of crosses in development of two maternal composite lines (1/2F1/4R1/4D) and (1/2F1/4T1/4S) in accelerated (January, May and September) or annual April lambing. The data involved 10,959 ewe breeding season records for 4,219 ewes of 412 sire families over 4 yr. Various measures of ewe productivity and its components (fertility, litter size, neonatal and preweaning survival and weaning weight) were analyzed. Fertility was higher for annual April than for accelerated May or January lambing and was sharply lower for September lambing. Fertility of F and F-cross ewes was significantly higher for May and lower for January lambings relative to R and D ewes. Litter size also was higher in annual April (1.9) than in January (1.8) or May (1.7) and September (1.4). Neonatal and preweaning survival was higher in September when litter size was smaller. Mean weaning weights were depressed in the larger April and May litters. Thus, weight of lambs weaned/ewe exposed was higher for annual April than for May and January lambing and was very low for September lambing. Hormone treatment of ewes for September lambing increased fertility from 16 to 44% and litter size from 1.6 to 1.8. Short lambing interval (8 mo vs 12+ mo) reduced mean ewe fertility by five percentage points, and most for the January lambing of Finnsheep ewes.  相似文献

Objectives were to estimate effects of sire breed (Dorset, Finnsheep, Romanov, Texel, and Montadale), dam breed [Composite III (CIII) and northwestern whiteface (WF)], mating season (March and May), and their interactions on reproductive traits of mature F1 ewes in spring mating seasons. A total of 1,099 F1 ewes produced 1,754 litters of 2,995 lambs from exposures to Suffolk rams during March and May mating seasons in 1995 through 1999. Fertility rate and ewe longevity were measured. Number born and litter birth weight were recorded, and number and weight at weaning and 20 wk of age were analyzed separately for dam- and nursery-reared litter mates. Total productivity from 4 to 6 yr of age for each ewe entering the breeding flock was calculated as the sum of 20-wk weights for dam-reared lambs and separately for nursery-reared lambs. Interactions of sire breed x mating season, ewe age x mating season, and ewe age x dam breed were often significant. Interactive effects of sire breed and mating season on fertility rate (P < 0.001) were primarily due to differences in magnitude. Fertility rates of sire breeds for March and May matings, respectively, were 92 and 89% for Romanov, 91 and 72% for Finnsheep, 90 and 52% for Texel, 88 and 52% for Montadale, and 83 and 62% for Dorset. Sire breed x mating season also affected number born (P < 0.03); March and May values were 2.12 and 2.05 for Romanov, 2.00 and 1.94 for Finnsheep, 1.39 and 1.41 for Texel, 1.37 and 1.51 for Montadale, and 1.37 and 1.55 for Dorset, respectively. Interaction of sire breed x dam breed on fertility rate (P < 0.01) was due to change in rank as well as magnitude. Romanov- and Dorset-sired ewes out of CIII dams had greater fertility rates than Romanov- and Dorset-sired ewes out of WF dams. The opposite situation existed for ewes by Finnsheep, Texel, and Montadale sires. Differences between dam breeds (CIII and WF) in total productivity of dam-reared lambs were not detected, whereas ewes exposed in March (78 kg) were more productive (P < 0.01) than those exposed in May (68 kg). Means of sire breeds for total productivity of dam-reared lambs were 47, 65, 70, 70, and 111 kg for Texel, Montadale, Dorset, Finnsheep, and Romanov, respectively (P < 0.001). Superior reproduction of Romanov sired ewes was primarily due to greater fertility rate and prolificacy at each mating season and ewe age. Use of Romanov-crossbred ewes would increase fertility during spring mating, an important constraint of the sheep industry.  相似文献

Performance of the Dorper and Mutton Merino breeds and their crosses was assessed from 1,305 ewe and 1,453 lamb records from six lambing seasons. Dorper and Mutton Merino were mated in all combinations under an accelerated lambing system and crossbred females were mated to Suffolk rams. The Dorper and Mutton Merino breeds were not significantly different for fertility, pre-weaning lamb growth and survival. Suffolk sired lambs from crossbred ewes grew rapidly and were heaviest at birth and at weaning. They also survived better than lambs from the other breeding groups and this contributed to the higher weaning rate (P less than 0.05) in crossbred ewes. Weight of weaned lambs per ewe exposed to the ram per season was 12% higher (P less than 0.05) in the Dorper than the Mutton Merino ewes. However lifetime production was 28% higher (P less than 0.01) in Mutton Merino ewes due to significantly superior longevity. Crossbred ewes were highly productive. Individual heterosis was not significant but estimates were positive for most traits. Growth rate and survival of lambs increased as age of dam increased to 48 and 40 months respectively. Lambs born to previously non-lactating ewes were heavier and survived better than lambs born to ewes lactating in the previous season. Lambs born and reared as singles were 25% heavier at birth (P less than 0.001) and 52% heavier at weaning (P less than 0.001) than those born and reared as twins. Ewe performance was compared for five pure breeds of sheep (Finnsheep, F; Rambouillet, R; Dorset, D; Targhee, T; Suffolk, S) and the crosses in development of two maternal composite lines (C1 = 1/2F1/4R1/4D and C2 = 1/2F1/4T1/4S). The data involved 10,959 breeding season records of 4,219 ewes by 412 sires. Ewe production and the components (fertility, litter size, neonatal and preweaning lamb survival and mean lamb weaning weight) were adjusted for age and standardized across season of lambing and years. The D and F ewes produced more weight of lamb/ewe exposed than R, S and T ewes because of higher D and F fertility, higher D lamb survival and larger F litters. First cross and inter se generations of C1 and C2 ewes averaged 17 to 27% higher fertility than the parental mean. Litter size averaged about one lamb higher for F than for other pure breeds, but only slightly higher for C1 and C2 than for the mean of F and other breeds. Lower neonatal survival for F than for other breeds and crosses was associated with the larger F litters and with 2 to 8% positive heterosis in the crosses. Preweaning survival of suckled and nursery lambs was low for F and S and positive heterosis ranged from 9 to 19% in crosses. Mean lamb weaning weights were highest for S, lowest for F, with little heterosis in crosses. Crossbred ewes reared .3 to .4 more lambs than mean for parental pure breeds. Heterosis in C1 and C2 ranged from 11 to 28% for lambs born, 27 to 43% for lambs weaned and 29 to 44% for weight of lamb weaned/ewe exposed. Decline in heterosis with inter se mating of crosses was no greater than expected from the reduction in predicted heterozygosity.  相似文献

At two experimental stations of the University Hohenheim, a crossbreeding experiment with sheep was carried out from 1969 to 1978. Experimental design, material and results for reproductive traits are described in a first communication (Nitter, 1975).A total of 1 168 lambs on farm I and 440 lambs on farm II was weaned early and fattened on concentrates in a controlled housing system. Lambs of the same sex were slaughtered at equal weights. Data were collected for birth weight, growth in different periods, and various traits related to carcass conformation and carcass composition.The data were analyzed by least squares procedures. Interactions among main effects were not detected for any trait.For the important growth traits, the differences between sire lines as well as those between dam lines were rather small. Differences between dam lines were mainly caused by differences in birth weight.Significant differences between the test lines were found for most traits of carcass conformation and composition. The differences between dam lines for fat percentage in the carcass are the most important ones from an economic point of view. As expected, the offspring of the Finncross ewes had the fattest carcasses of all groups when slaughtered at equal weight.If both reproductive traits of the ewes as well as growth and carcass traits of their lambs are considered the results of this experiment show that the economic efficiency of fat lamb production can be significantly increased by substituting the traditional purebreeding production by appropriate systems of commercial crossbreeding.  相似文献

The objective was to evaluate wool (Dorset and Rambouillet) and hair (Dorper, Katahdin, and White Dorper) breeds for their ability to complement Romanov germplasm in two distinct production systems by estimating direct sire and grandsire effects on lamb growth, survival, and ewe productivity traits. Rams of the five breeds (n = 75) were mated to Romanov ewes (n = 459) over a 3-yr period to produce five types of crossbred lambs (n = 2,739). Sire breed (P > 0.06) did not impact body weight or survival traits of the first-generation crossbred (F1) lambs. The productivity of retained crossbred ewes (n = 830) mated to Suffolk and Texel terminal sires was evaluated at 1, 2, and 3 yr of age in each production system. In the intensive production system, labor and harvested feed were provided for sheep that lambed in March in barns, and ewes were limited to rearing two lambs with additional lambs reared artificially. Ewes in the extensive production system lambed in May on pasture and were responsible for rearing all lambs born with no labor or supplemental feed provided before weaning. A total of 1,962 litters and 4,171 lambs from 2,229 exposures to two terminal sire breeds (Suffolk and Texel) were produced in the experiment. Crossbred ewes in the intensive production system were mated in October, resulting in larger litter sizes than crossbred ewes mated in December for the extensive production system. However, single- and twin-born lamb mortality was similar between the two systems that differed greatly in labor, feed, and facilities. Lambs produced in the intensive system received concentrate feed from an early age and were heavier at 24 wk of age than lambs produced in the extensive system. These outcomes resulted in greater 24-wk litter weight in the intensive than in the extensive system (P < 0.0001). Unexpectedly, the relative performance of crossbred types did not differ importantly between production systems. White Dorper × Romanov crossbred ewes had numerical advantages in productivity in each system; however, differences between ewe types were not significant. In the extensive system, without labor and shelter at lambing or supplemental feed until weaning, 3-yr-old crossbred ewes of all types averaged 1.78 lambs marketed per ewe lambing, and 40% of the ewes that gave birth to triplets weaned their entire litters. These results document that prolific sheep and extensive systems can be successfully combined if appropriate crossbred types are used.  相似文献

Ewes from lines selected for high and low reproductive rate and a control line bred and selected randomly were endoscopically examined 3 to 5 d after breeding to determine ovulation rates in the fall of 1985, 1986 and 1987. Fertility (ewes lambing per ewe exposed), lambing rate (lambs born per ewe exposed) and litter size (lambs born per ewe lambing) were evaluated at lambing in the spring of each year. Embryonic survival was estimated as the number of lambs born per corpora lutea. Ovulation rates were 1.28, 1.73 and 1.46 for low, high and control lines, respectively. More (P less than .01) single ovulations occurred in low-line ewes than in the other two lines; high-line ewes had more (P less than .01) twin ovulations than did low- or control-line ewes. Fertility did not differ among lines. Selection line affected (P less than .01) lambing rate at first and all services. Control-line ewes had mean lambing rates at first and all services that were intermediate between those of the low and high lines, which were different from each other. Line x age of ewe interactions existed (P less than .01) for lambing rate at all services and litter size at first and all services. High-line ewes had lower lambing rates and litter sizes as 2-yr-olds than other lines, but their performance increased steadily to 6-yr-olds, whereas the low and control lines remained relatively constant. A total of 147 ewes, 4 rams and 188 lambs of their progeny of the Djallonké breed of sheep were used to study the factors affecting reproductive and growth traits and the causes of lamb mortality. Data on ewes were collected during a 12-month period, while those on the lambs born to 123 of the ewes were collected until they were 12 months of age. The average fertility and abortion rates were 0.84 and 0.09. The fertility rate increased and the abortion rate decreased with increasing age of the ewes (p<0.05). The number of lambs born per ewe joined, litter weight at birth per ewe joined and litter weight at weaning per ewe joined were 1.28, 3.5 kg and 17 kg, respectively. The average numbers of lambs born per ewe, lambs born alive per ewe, lambs born dead per ewe and lambs per ewe that died between birth and weaning were 1.53, 1.43, 0.03 and 0.3, respectively. The age of the ewes significantly (p<0.05) affected all these traits except the number of dead lambs and the index of fertility (94%). The age of the ewes significantly (p<0.05) affected the birth weight and the weight at 6 and 12 months of age, whereas the lambing season significantly (p<0.05) affected all the growth traits studied. The type of birth was the most important source of variation in body weights of lambs. Sex had no significant (p>0.05) effect on the growth traits studied. The complex `starvation–bad management–light body weight at birth' caused 48% of the lamb mortality between birth and weaning, while diarrhoea, pneumonia and internal and external parasites caused approximately 52% of the lamb mortality over the same period. The seasonal raw mortality rate of the lambs before weaning was highest in the humid season.  相似文献

Number born and litter birth weight were recorded, and number and weight at weaning and 20 wk of age were analyzed separately for dam- and nursery-reared litter mates. Total productivity through 3 yr of age for each ewe entering the breeding flock was calculated as the sum of 20-wk weights for dam- or nursery-reared lambs. Interactions of sire breed x mating season, sire breed x ewe age, and mating season x ewe age were generally significant, whereas interactions of sire breed, mating season, and ewe age x dam breed were seldom detected. Interactions of sire breed x mating season were often due to changes in rank as well as magnitude, indicating the importance of matching sire breed to a specific mating season. The number born to Dorset-, Texel-, and Montadale-sired ewes was not affected by dam breed; however, Finnsheep-sired ewes out of northwestern whiteface dams were more prolific than Finnsheep-sired ewes out of Composite III dams, and the opposite situation existed for Romanov-sired ewes. Least squares means of sire breeds (P < 0.001) for total productivity of dam-reared lambs were 98.5, 103.5, 106.9, 124.6, and 154.9 kg/ewe entering the breeding flock for Texel, Dorset, Montadale, Finnsheep, and Romanov, respectively. Superior reproduction of Romanov-sired ewes was due to greater conception rate and prolificacy for each mating season and ewe age, as well as greater ewe longevity. Total productivity of F1 ewes by Composite III dams (125.6 kg) was greater (P < 0.001) than for ewes born to northwestern whiteface dams (109.7 kg), and the effect of mating season increased (P < 0.001) from August to October to December. Litter weight at 20 wk of age of 2- and 3-yr-old ewes was similar but greater (P < 0.001) than for 1-yr-old ewes. Experimental results provide comprehensive information about the appropriate use of these breeds in crossbreeding systems to meet specific production-marketing objectives.  相似文献

The reproduction of 2,846 crossbreed ewes with 7,899 records is reported. The ewes were progeny of mainly Merino dams and 91 sires from several maternal sire breeds including Border Leicester, East Friesian, Finnsheep, Coopworth, Corriedale, Booroola Leicester, and several others. There were 3 cohorts of ewes at each of 3 sites that were bred naturally to meat-type rams for each of 3 yr to evaluate reproduction and lamb production. At 2 sites, the ewes were mated in the autumn, first at 7 mo of age, and at 2 sites the ewes were mated in the spring, first at 14 or 17 mo of age. The cohorts of ewes and sites were genetically linked by 3 common sires. Mixed linear models were used to analyze ultrasound scanned pregnancy rate, fetal number, fertility (ewes lambing), litter size, lamb survival, number of lambs born (NLBj), number of lambs weaned (NLWj), and total weight of lamb weaned (TWWj) per ewe bred. Fixed effects included sire breed (1 to 10), environment (1 to 4, site and season of breeding: autumn, spring), breeding (1 to 3), cohort (1 to 3), and their interactions. The REML procedures were used to estimate (co)variance components. Ewe sire breed effects were significant (P < 0.01) for all the reproductive traits and breed means ranged from 0.75 to 0.96 for fertility, 1.22 to 2.08 for litter size, 0.70 to 0.90 for lamb survival, 0.99 to 1.66 for NLBj, 0.87 to 1.26 for NLWj, and 22.9 to 33.8 kg for TWWj, with the ranking of sire breeds varying for different traits. For all traits except lamb survival, the contrast between breeding 1 vs. 2 and 3 was considerably greater than the contrast between breeding 2 vs. 3, with significant environment x breeding interactions (P < 0.01). Estimates of heritability for the components of reproduction ranged from 0.03 +/- 0.02 for lamb survival to 0.19 +/- 0.05 for litter size, and those for the composite traits were 0.17 +/- 0.04 for NLBj, 0.13 +/- 0.04 for NLWj, and 0.17 +/- 0.04 for TWWj, with repeatability ranging from 0.10 to 0.19. Genetic and phenotypic correlations among the traits are reported. The significant variation among sire breeds of the crossbred ewes can be used to improve reproduction, although there was a change in the rank of the breeds for the various traits. There was considerable overlap between the breeds, and additional improvement could be achieved by exploiting the genetic variation between sires within breeds for all the ewe reproductive traits.  相似文献

为了解中国美利奴羊(新疆型)近年来遗传结构的变化趋势以及探讨毛用性状与繁殖性状的遗传关系,需要进一步研究这些性状的遗传力以及它们之间的关系。本研究收集额敏县聚鑫细毛羊养殖专业合作社1985-2018年中国美利奴羊(新疆型)共计9 428只羊毛生产记录和1987-2018共计5 887只年繁殖记录,运用BLUPF90软件结合Gibbs抽样方法,利用单性状模型对中国美利奴(新疆型)毛用性状(细度支数、等级、总评分、毛长、污毛重和鉴定时体重)和繁殖性状(配种次数、妊娠天数、胎产羔数和总产羔数)进行方差组分和遗传力估计,利用双性状模型分析毛用性状与繁殖性状之间的遗传相关与表型相关。结果显示,中国美利奴羊(新疆型)毛用性状细度支数、等级、总评分、毛长、污毛重、鉴定时体重的遗传力估计值分别为0.471±0.020、0.088±0.030、0.114±0.018、0.426±0.025、0.328±0.041、0.317±0.046;繁殖性状配种次数、妊娠天数、胎产羔数及总产羔数的遗传力估计值分别为0.056±0.009、0.022±0.010、0.120±0.018、0.163±0.016;毛用性状与胎产羔数、总产羔数之间的遗传相关范围为-0.031~0.286,鉴定时体重与胎产羔数(0.286)、总产羔数(0.204)遗传相关最高,细度支数与胎产羔数(-0.143)、总产羔数(-0.048)呈负的遗传相关;毛用性状与胎产羔数、总产羔数之间的表型相关范围为-0.210~0.216,毛长与总产羔数(0.216)表型相关最高,细度支数与胎产羔数(-0.137)、总产羔数(-0.210)呈显著负表型相关。本研究结果发现,毛用性状与繁殖性状之间存在一定的关系,这一结果可为今后制定中国美利奴羊育种规划提供数据基础,为选育优质高产、繁殖性能好的细毛羊提供理论依据,从而进一步提高细毛羊产业经济效益。  相似文献

It is sometimes possible to breed for more uniform individuals by selecting animals with a greater tendency to be less variable, that is, those with a smaller environmental variance. This approach has been applied to reproduction traits in various animal species. We have evaluated fecundity in the Irish Belclare sheep breed by analyses of flocks with differing average litter size (number of lambs per ewe per year, NLB) and have estimated the genetic variance in environmental variance of lambing traits using double hierarchical generalized linear models (DHGLM). The data set comprised of 9470 litter size records from 4407 ewes collected in 56 flocks. The percentage of pedigreed lambing ewes with singles, twins and triplets was 30, 54 and 14%, respectively, in 2013 and has been relatively constant for the last 15 years. The variance of NLB increases with the mean in this data; the correlation of mean and standard deviation across sires is 0.50. The breeding goal is to increase the mean NLB without unduly increasing the incidence of triplets and higher litter sizes. The heritability estimates for lambing traits were NLB, 0.09; triplet occurrence (TRI) 0.07; and twin occurrence (TWN), 0.02. The highest and lowest twinning flocks differed by 23% (75% versus 52%) in the proportion of ewes lambing twins. Fitting bivariate sire models to NLB and the residual from the NLB model using a double hierarchical generalized linear model (DHGLM) model found a strong genetic correlation (0.88 ± 0.07) between the sire effect for the magnitude of the residual (VE) and sire effects for NLB, confirming the general observation that increased average litter size is associated with increased variability in litter size. We propose a threshold model that may help breeders with low litter size increase the percentage of twin bearers without unduly increasing the percentage of ewes bearing triplets in Belclare sheep.  相似文献

A 3-yr study was conducted to comprehensively evaluate columbia, suffolk, usmarc-composite (composite), and texel breeds as terminal sires in an extensive rangeland production system. The objective was to estimate breed-of-ram effects on ewe fertility, prolificacy, and dystocia, and sire breed effects on lamb survival and growth until weaning at approximately 132 d of age. Data were from 22 columbia, 22 composite, 21 suffolk, and 17 texel rams with 957 exposures to 574 adult rambouillet ewes (3- to 7-yr-old at lambing), 908 lambings, and 1,834 lambs. Ram breed did not affect ewe fertility (mean = 94.9%; p = 0.73), total number born per ewe lambing (mean = 2.02 lambs; p = 0.20), number born alive per ewe lambing (mean = 1.90 lambs; p = 0.24), or number weaned per ewe lambing (mean = 1.45 lambs, p = 0.94). Dystocia rates were different (p = 0.01) for ewes mated to columbia (12.2%), composite (13.5%), suffolk (25.7%), and texel rams (31.9%) during 1 yr of the study, but differences among ram breeds were not repeatable (p ≥ 0.38) during the other 2 yr. Suffolk-sired lambs were heavier (p ≥ 0.02) at birth (5.5 kg) and weaning (40.3 kg) than lambs sired by the other breeds, which did not differ (p ≥ 0.34) for birth weight (mean = 5.3 kg). Texel-sired lambs (37.4 kg) were lighter (p ≥ 0.02) at weaning than columbia- (38.8 kg) and composite-sired (38.4 kg) lambs, which did not differ (p = 0.40) for weaning weight. Sire breed effect approached significance (p = 0.06) for lamb survival to weaning; estimated survival probabilities were 0.87 (columbia), 0.89 (composite), 0.93 (suffolk), and 0.86 (texel) for lambs reared by their birth dam. Interaction between sire breeds and birth weight affected (p < 0.001) lamb survival and revealed that lightweight columbia- and suffolk-sired lambs had a greater risk of death than lightweight lambs sired by composite and texel rams, but risk of death did not increase substantially for heavyweight lambs from any of the breeds. When mated to adult rambouillet ewes in an extensive rangeland production system, the use of suffolk rams is warranted to improve preweaning growth of market lambs and is not predicted to affect ewe fertility, ewe prolificacy, dystocia, or lamb survival compared with the other sire breeds we tested.  相似文献

A performance data set from 376 Ripollesa purebred ewes of the experimental flock of the Universitat Autònoma of Barcelona was analyzed using a bivariate Bayesian threshold-linear model. The data set contained 1,598 litter size records and 1,699 days-to-lambing records. The model included the additive genetic effect of each animal and 3 nongenetic sources of variation: ewe age, year of lambing, and the permanent environmental effect characterized by the ewe. The flock was phenotypically selected for litter size since 1986, and replacement ewes and rams were selected from the progeny of the more prolific ewes, which had at least 3 deliveries recorded. The phenotypic trend for litter size was positive, whereas days to lambing followed an unclear pattern. Both traits had low heritabilities; 0.13 for litter size and 0.11 for days to lambing. Response to selection was evaluated through (a) the average breeding value of the ewe lambs chosen annually, and (b) the average breeding value of the overall flock. The first measurement suggested a positive trend for litter size, although it showed important oscillations. On the other hand, the average breeding value for the overall flock showed a stable positive tendency after yr 4 of selection, with estimates clearly different from zero after yr 11 of selection. A significant increase in the incidence of multiple births was observed, with a mode of approximately 10%. The correlated response in days to lambing did not show a significant trend. The effect of year of lambing also positively influenced both litter size and days to lambing, although important oscillations were observed between years. Results indicated that litter size in sheep can be effectively improved through phenotypic selection, even in small flocks; moreover, days to lambing could also be genetically improved, given the estimate obtained for its heritability.  相似文献

The relationship between estrogen receptor (ESR) genotype and reproductive traits in a population of Yorkshire, Large White, and crossbred animals was studied. Reproductive tract and litter data were analyzed for associations with ESR genotype, parity, and breed. Forty-six Yorkshire, 31 Large White, and 70 crossbred females from the above population were mated to Hampshire boars and slaughtered at 75 d of gestation. Data collected included ovulation rate, uterine horn length, number of fetuses, fetal weight, uterine weight, number of mummies, fetal sex, fetal placement, fetal survival, and fetal space. Data were analyzed using a model that included the fixed effects of ESR genotype, breed, parity, and all significant two-way interactions. Litter data representing 212 litter records were analyzed in a model that included the fixed effects of ESR genotype of dam, parity, farrowing month, dam breed, sire breed, and all significant two-way interactions. The ESR genotype was significantly associated with the total litter weight of piglets born and total litter weight of piglets born alive. Dams with the AA genotype had significantly (P = 0.04) heavier litters at birth (14.44 +/- 0.36 kg) than dams with the BB genotype (13.43 +/- 0.47 kg). Ovulation rate was significantly (P < 0.05) different between animals of parity 1 (17.22 +/- 0.41) and parity > or = 3 (19.92 +/- 0.85). Significant breed effects were observed for fetal weight, with purebred Large White animals having a greater fetal weight per horn (3,909 +/- 114 g) than purebred Yorkshire animals (3,553 +/- 92 g). Notable, but nonsignificant, trends with respect to ESR genotype were also observed for number of piglets alive at weaning and total litter weight at weaning. The ESR gene is positively associated with several previously uninvestigated reproductive traits.  相似文献

From 1985 to 1989 lambs persistently infected with border disease virus (BDV) were produced for comparative immunological studies by infecting 57 susceptible pregnant ewes between 50 and 60 days' gestation with Moredun or Oban strains of BDV. Ewes were infected either by injection with virus grown in cell culture or by housing with lambs excreting BDV. There was no significant difference in the outcomes of these different methods of infection. There was a significant difference in the number of viable lambs born to ewes receiving the two viruses. Of 41 ewes infected with Moredun virus 21 produced 32 live lambs of which 17 were reared to 1 month old (53% viability). Of 16 ewes receiving Oban virus 10 gave birth to 17 live lambs of which 15 were reared to 1 month old (88% viability). All the lambs born to ewes infected with Moredun BDV had varying signs of tremor and increased hairiness ("hairy-shakers") while those born to ewes infected with the Oban virus had no obvious clinical signs. Survival of the lambs was poor. Up until February 1991, 14 Moredun and 10 Oban sheep between the ages of 4 months and 5.5 yr had died from a variety of causes. The two commonest causes were a chronic wasting syndrome and a mucosal disease-like syndrome which was associated with the recovery of cytopathic BDV. Mating of unrelated persistently infected sheep was largely unproductive although 2 lambs were reared.  相似文献

Genetic parameters were estimated using REML with animal models for number of lambs born and 18-mo body weight in Rambouillet sheep. Number of lambs born was modeled either as repeated measurements on the same trait or as different traits at different ages. The original data for number of lambs born were separated according to age of the ewe into two classes: 2 and 3 yr, and older than 3 yr. Numbers of ewes with lambing records for the age classes were 653 and 466 with 1,106 and 1,118 records, respectively. For the data set that included all ages, the number of ewes was 684 with 2,224 records, and for 18-mo body weight the number of ewes measured was 557. For number of lambs born, the animal model included random genetic, permanent environmental, and residual environmental effects and fixed effects for age of ewe, year of lambing, and month of year of lambing. Lambing day within season was used as a covariate. For 18-mo body weight, year of birth of ewe was used as a fixed effect. Actual age in days when the ewe was weighed was used as a covariate. Estimates of heritability for number of lambs born by age group were .04, for 2- and 3-yr old ewes, and .06, for ewes greater than 3 yr old, from the two-trait (two age of ewe classes) analyses and .06 when all ages were included. Estimates of heritability for number of lambs born from the single-trait analyses were somewhat less than estimates from two-trait analyses. Estimate of genetic correlation between number of lambs born for the 2 and 3 yr and the >3 yr classes was near unity (1.00), which suggests that a repeated measures model for number of lambs born is adequate for making selection decisions. Estimate of genetic correlation between number of lambs born and 18-mo body weight was .35 with a heritability estimate of .48 for 18-mo body weight. The estimate of genetic correlation suggests that selection for increased number of lambs born would result in increased 18-mo body weight.  相似文献

A resource population of ewes derived from Dorset and Romanov grandparents was generated over 5 yr to provide genotypic and phenotypic data to estimate effects of each callipyge genotype on component traits of reproduction. Effects on ovulation rate were estimated from data recorded by examination of ovaries from serially slaughtered ewe lambs (n = 174) born in 1994 and 1995. Productivity and longevity through 5 yr of age were recorded on a total of 265 F2 ewes produced in 1996 through 1998. Number of lambs born, birth weights, and weaning weights of lambs were calculated for each ewe. Weaning weight was recorded for each lamb and adjusted for age to 56 and 32 d for dam- and nursery-reared lambs, respectively. Longevity was determined as a binary trait based on the presence or absence of the ewe in the breeding flock at 5 yr of age. Ewes generated 937 records for breeding weight and 925 records for conception rate, which was determined on ewes exposed and still present at the start of each lambing season. Seven hundred seventeen records were analyzed for traits based on the number of ewes lambing. Genotypes for the causative callipyge mutation were determined using a matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry assay. Each ewe was classified into 1 of 4 genotypes; NMatNPat, NMatCPat, CMatNPat, or CMatCPat, where N represents wild type and C represents the mutant allele. The mean ovulation rate of the ewe lambs genotyped NMatNPat was greater (P < 0.02) than that exhibited by NMatCPat; however, the estimated difference of 0.25 ovum in the ewe lambs did not affect the number born. The live weight of NMatCPat ewes at breeding was 2.5 kg less than that of other genotypes (P < 0.01). The callipyge genotype class did not significantly affect conception rates, fecundity, maternal ability, or ewe longevity. Maintaining a ewe flock to produce homozygous mutant rams for use in terminal sire mating systems presents no unusual problems from a reproduction standpoint.  相似文献
