A 4-yr-old striped skunk (Mephitis mephitis) developed an 11- x 7- x 7-cm retroperitoneal mass caudal to the left kidney. The mass was surgically excised and, on the basis of histology and immunohistochemistry, diagnosed as a benign teratoma. Six months later, a second histologically similar neoplasm was excised from the same location and was considered to represent local tumor recurrence. The skunk died 16 mo later without recurrence. Complete excision of the tumor appeared curative in this case and supported the benign diagnosis. An extragonadal teratoma should be considered as a differential diagnosis for an abdominal mass in a skunk.  相似文献

Objective— To describe laparoscopic removal of a large testicular teratoma in a standing horse.
Study Design— Clinical report.
Animals— Thoroughbred horse (11 months) with a testicular teratoma.
Methods— A unilateral cryptorchid testicle could not be removed by an inguinal approach under general anesthesia because of it s large size. After recovery from general anesthesia, ultrasound evaluation revealed a 24 × 19 cm fluid-filled testicular mass. The mass was removed by paralumbar fossa laparoscopy with the horse in a standing position. After fluid aspiration of the mass, the mesorchium and ductus deferens were ligated with extracorporeal knots and the mass retrieved inside a laparoscopic specimen pouch. Morphologic features were consistent with a teratoma.
Results— Laparoscopic-guided aspiration of fluid from the teratoma decreased mass size and increased ease of manipulation and retrieval. Retrieval of the teratoma in a laparoscopic specimen pouch prevented loss of abdominal insufflation, helped reduce fluid leakage, and potential seeding of neoplastic cells.
Conclusion— Use of laparoscopy for removal of neoplastic cryptorchid testicles offers many advantages including minimal invasiveness and increased safety associated with good visibility of structures.
Clinical Relevance— Standing laparoscopic surgery should be considered for removal of testicular neoplasms in horses.  相似文献

A 3-year female-neutered domestic shorthair cat presenting with exophthalmos and an ipsilateral subzygomatic soft tissue mass lesion is described. Magnetic resonance imaging of the mass was performed followed by complete surgical excision. The mass was determined to be a retrobulbar teratoma and complete resection was curative. Teratomas are rare germ-cell tumours that uncommonly form in extragonadal sites. A retrobulbar location has not been previously reported in the cat and should be considered a rare cause of exophthalmos in this species.  相似文献

A young adult boxer dog was examined for a painless swelling in the left cranial cervical area that was refractory to antibiotic therapy. Ultrasound examination revealed a hypoechoic mass abutting the rostrolateral aspect of the left mandibular salivary gland. The cystic mass was excised and was found to extend through the capsule of the salivary gland and appeared to be confluent with the glandular tissue at this point. Histopathological examination of the excised tissue demonstrated tissue from all 3 germinal layers. There was no indication of malignancy and the mass was diagnosed as a benign cervical teratoma. Hypotheses regarding the origin of teratomas in general are discussed and the origin of the teratoma in this case is suggested.  相似文献

A 12-year-old pregnant female giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata) died approximately 2 months prior to her anticipated parturition date. At necropsy, a mass measuring approximately 20 x 36 x 20 cm was observed, attached to the umbilical cord, the latter being otherwise normal in appearance. Histologically, the mass contained 3 germinal tissue components with areas of squamous epithelium, respiratory epithelium, primitive neural tissues, glial tissue, peripheral nerve, adipose tissue, cartilage, and smooth muscle. Based on these findings, the tumor was diagnosed as a teratoma originating from the umbilical cord. This is possibly the second reported case of umbilical cord teratoma in animals.  相似文献

A 10-month-old intact male cat with a clinical history of a large mass in the left perineal region was submitted to the surgery department. The mass had reportedly been present as a small swelling after birth. Cytological evaluation using a fine-needle aspirate showed eosinophilic keratinaceous debris, and was not convincing for the definitive diagnosis. Complete surgical excision was performed. Postoperative function and aesthetics were excellent. Based on gross and histological features the definitive diagnosis of the tumor was mature teratoma with ectodermal and endodermal components. After a follow-up period of 4 months, no signs of recurrence were evident. Surgical excision of the teratoma in our case was considered curative. A perineal location has not been previously reported in the cat and should be considered a rare condition in this species.  相似文献

Teratomas are infrequent tumors in domestic fowl and have been rarely reported in ducks. It appears that the only case of mediastinal teratoma in a Pekin duck was observed by Alezais and Cotte in 1908. A lobulated, firm mass occupied the thorax of a 7-mo-old male white Pekin duck (Anas platyrhinchos domesticus). The tumor was composed of squamous epithelium, feather follicles, glandular epithelium, bone and cartilage, and thymus and was classified as tridermic, thoracic teratoma.  相似文献

A female domestic duck (Anas platyrhynchos domesticus) suddenly died with abdominal distension and a large multilobulated mass within the coelomic cavity was found. Histologically and immunohistochemically, a benign mature tridermic teratoma was diagnosed and epithelial structures, cartilage, bone, myxoid tissue, adipocytes, muscle cells, cystic spaces lined by squamous epithelium, feather follicles, melanocytes and variable neural and glial differentiation were recognized. By electron microscopy, desmosomes, keratin bundles, dense core neurosecretory granules, aberrant Z-line material and Luse bodies were found. To our knowledge, this is the first report of tridermic benign intracoelomic teratoma of a duck in which an extensive immunohistochemical and electron microscopic examination has been performed and in which a common neural and glial differentiation has been demonstrated.  相似文献

Botryomycosis is an uncommon chronic bacterial infection that can have cutaneous and visceral involvement. This report describes an 18-year-old mixed-breed mare presented with dysphagia, dyspnoea and an upper respiratory noise that developed secondary to oropharyngeal botryomycosis. Histological examination of the mass showed a granulomatous formation with Splendore–Hoeppli phenomenon surrounding Gram-positive bacteria. This report describes the clinical signs, approach and management of an oropharyngeal Staphylococcus aureus granuloma in a geriatric mare.  相似文献

A 17-year-old female crossbred cat developed a mass on the left ovary. The mass was solid, firm, 5.5 x 3.5 x 4.5 cm. The mass contained ectodermal components (skin and appendages), mesodermal components (osseous, cartilaginous and adipose structures), and endodermal components (glandular structures lined by columnar epithelium). The tumor was diagnosed as a solid, mature teratoma of the ovary.  相似文献

An ovarian teratoma in a 5-year-old bitch with a history of vaginal discharge was removed successfully by ovariohysterectomy. The mass was discovered on abdominal palpation and contained multiple mineralized densities that were visualized radiographically. Histologic examination of the mass confirmed the presence of tissues originating from multiple germ-cell layers, characteristic of a teratoma. Clinical findings in dogs with teratomas include abdominal distention, a palpable abdominal mass, and rarely, evidence of reproductive hormonal activity. These neoplasms are uncommon in the dog, and they may exhibit malignant tendencies, with metastasis developing in approximately 33% of the reported cases. Ovariohysterectomy is the preferred treatment for ovarian teratomas, and this procedure was curative in the dog of this report.  相似文献

A 2-year-old female Labrador retriever was presented with anorexia and abdominal distention. Laparotomy revealed the presence of a 31-cm ovoid mass in the portion of the left ovary and an 11-cm round mass in the left retroperitoneal region. Both masses were surgically removed. Histopathological examination of the masses revealed a mixture of tissues characteristic of teratomas, such as multiple bronchial and intestinal cysts, hair follicles, sebaceous and apocrine sweat glands, and neuron tissue with intervening cartilage, bone and fat tissue. This paper appears to be the first report of primary retroperitoneal teratoma in the dog.  相似文献

Ovarian teratomas are occasionally reported in dogs; the rarest type is the monophasic teratoma, composed of tissues originating from only one germ layer. Canine endometrial adenocarcinomas are also rare in dogs and mainly affect geriatric females. This report describes the case of co‐existing ovarian teratoma and uterine adenocarcinoma in a 10‐year‐old nulliparous female Boxer presented with lethargy, anorexia and purulent vaginal discharge. Abdominal ultrasonography evidenced pyometra and a mass in the left ovary. This was composed of a uniform whitish tissue with multiple cystic structures. The histology revealed an atrophy of the ovarian parenchyma, compressed by a proliferation of well‐differentiated nervous tissue staining positively to vimentin, S100 and neuronal specific enolase (NSE), and negatively to keratin and inhibin. The left uterine horn, whose diameter was markedly increased, showed foci of endometrial cellular atypia, evident nucleoli and mitoses, at light microscopy. To our best knowledge, this is the first report of a co‐existing ovarian monophasic teratoma and endometrial adenocarcinoma, two rare reproductive neoplasia in dogs.  相似文献

A 9-year, 7-month-old female German shepherd weighing 26.6 kg was admitted to the hospital for pica and diarrhea. A large mass was found in the right ovary and removed, and cross section of the mass revealed a multilobular tumor consisting of several cystic cavities which contained tufts of dark hair in thick creamy-white sebaceous fluid. Histologically, the tumor consisted of adipose tissue, central nervous tissue, crystalline lens, cartilage and bone. In the central nervous tissue, lens and lesions like nonsuppurative inflammation comprizing of accumulation of glial cells and lymphocytic perivascular cuffing were observed. The tumor was diagnosed as a mature cystic teratoma.  相似文献

An exploratory laparotomy on a mixed‐breed bitch of an estimated age of 5 years revealed that she had undergone ovariectomy in the past, but a cystic structure was present in the area of the right ovary and a whitish mass, approximately 3 cm in diameter, in the area of the left ovary. These structures were removed together with an apparently normal uterus. Histological examination of the cyst showed a thin layer of connective tissue, while the left ovarian mass revealed ovarian tissue and highly differentiated nervous tissue, confirmed through immunohistochemistry. A presumptive diagnosis of mature ovarian teratoma was made. Although teratomas generally contain recognizable elements from more than one of the three germ cell layers, they can also be monophasic, when there is only one germ layer component. Ovarian teratomas are rare in the dog and never before have been reported in an ovarian fragment.  相似文献

A 16 month old cat presented with a history of acute onset oral pain and hypersalivation. Oral examination revealed a wooden stick that protruded from the right sublingual region. Lateral cervical radiography showed retro pharyngeal gas lucencies. An 11 cm wooden stick was removed per os and the resulting tract was endoscopically explored. There were no post-operative complications and the cat remains disease free four months after presentation. In contrast to dogs, where oropharyngeal stick injuries are an uncommon albeit well recognised condition, there have been no previous case reports of oropharyngeal stick injuries in the cat. This case report describes the presentation, diagnosis and treatment of an oropharyngeal stick injury in a cat.  相似文献

An 11-year-old, spayed female giant schnauzer was presented for evaluation of chronic, progressive tetraparesis. Diagnostic imaging was consistent with intervertebral disk protrusion, and surgical decompression and stabilization were performed. Postoperatively the dog did not improve, and further imaging suggested an intramedullary mass at the level of the sixth cervical vertebra. The dog was euthanized 7 days after surgery, and a teratoma was found postmortem.  相似文献

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 3-year-old Thoroughbred mare was evaluated because of abnormal upper respiratory tract sounds (that had become apparent during race training) of 3 to 4 months' duration. CLINICAL FINDINGS: On initial physical evaluation, there were no abnormal findings. During trotting, an abnormal upper airway expiratory sound was audible. Endoscopic examination revealed a small mass protruding into the right ventral nasal meatus. Radiographic images of the skull revealed no abnormal findings. Computed tomography of the head revealed an abnormal structure in the same location as the mass that was observed during endoscopy. The x-ray attenuation of the mass was identical to that of dental tissue. TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: The mass was surgically removed with endoscopic guidance. On gross examination, the excised mass appeared to be a nearly normal molariform tooth. Histologic examination revealed that it was a well-formed tooth, with no other associated cellular populations. The mass was determined to be a molariform supernumerary intranasal tooth. Six months following discharge from the hospital, the trainer reported that the abnormal respiratory tract sound was no longer audible. During a follow-up endoscopic examination performed at the training facility, no abnormalities were detected. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: In horses, an intranasal tooth should be considered as a differential diagnosis for expiratory stridor. Clear definitions of heterotopic polyodontia, dentigerous cyst, and temporal teratoma can be used to clinically diagnose these separate anomalies. In the horse of this report, computed tomographic findings contributed to determination of a diagnosis and formulation of a treatment plan.  相似文献
