A domestic shorthair cat was presented with quadriparesis and lumbar hyperesthesia that progressed over 4 months. There were linear and amorphous radiopaque masses throughout the soft tissue surrounding the long bones, vertebral bodies, ribs, pelvis, and scapula. The diagnosis of osteochondromatosis was confirmed by histopathology. Unlike previously reported patients with osteochondromatosis, most of the calcified masses in this cat were not connected to the periosteum; some were linear and were arranged parallel to the long bones involved.  相似文献

A case of multiple cartilaginous exostoses (osteochondromatosis) in a 9-month-old Kelpie cross dog is described. This uncommon dyschondroplasia, which resembled multiple cartilaginous exostoses in man, involved the radius, the femur, a metacarpal and metatarsal bone, the phalanges of three extremities, the pelvis, the ribs and cervical, thoracic and coccygeal vertebrae.  相似文献

A 5‐year‐old female spayed Shetland sheepdog presented for evaluation of bandage sores on the left pelvic limb after a splint was placed to stabilise a digit fracture incurred approximately 2 weeks previously. Multiple areas of necrosis were identified upon bandage removal. After debridement of devitalised tissue, a 4 cm wound on the plantar surface of the metatarsal bones (with exposed bone and tendons) remained. The Papineau technique (which involves removal of infected or necrotic tissue, placement of autogenous cancellous bone graft within a wound, and delayed skin closure) was used to treat this wound. Use of bone graft in this manner aims to promote early granulation tissue formation and reduce the time until wound reconstruction can be performed. Autogenous cancellous bone graft was harvested from the proximal humerus and placed within the metatarsal wound. Once a healthy granulation tissue bed was noted to cover the bone graft, a meshed full thickness skin graft was placed. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the Papineau technique being used for this purpose in a dog.  相似文献

Long limb bones were dissected from 30 Camborough x Canabrid pigs serially slaughtered at birth, 14, 28, 56, and 84 d of age to determine the growth patterns of long limb bones (humerus and radius for the forelimb and femur and tibia for the hindlimb) in relation to live weight from birth to 84 d of age, weighing up to approximately 31 kg. Relationships between individual long limb bone measurements (Y) and live weight or transformations of live weight (X) were evaluated using allometric analyses. Hindlimb bones tended to have higher growth coefficients than forelimb bones (P < .05), suggesting an anterior-posterior gradient of long limb bone growth. However, centripetal gradients of growth for long limb bones were not evidential (P > .05). Greater diameter growth compared with length growth of the long limb bones indicated that the differentiation in growth for diameter and length of the long limb bones was an effective response to the functional requirements of standing, walking, and running following birth.  相似文献

To determine the effect of subchondral bone drilling (forage) on the cartilage repair process after injury has occurred, a cartilage defect (1 cm in diameter) was created on the radial facet of the proximal surface of each third carpal bone in 6 adult horses. In one of the third carpal bones (right or left thoracic limb) of each horse, a 1-cm cartilage defect was created, and 5 holes (1 mm in diameter and 10 mm deep) were drilled through the subchondral bone into the cancellous bone. In the other thoracic limb, an identical defect was created, but not drilled. Analyses of cell numbers and types in the synovia and the mucin precipitate quality were done before, at 1 week after, and 3 weeks after surgical manipulation was done and showed no significant difference between the joint environment of drilled carpi and those of nondrilled carpi. At 21 weeks after surgical manipulation was done, each joint was examined radiographically, macroscopically, and microscopically to compare the condition of the joints and the state of repair of the cartilage in each defect. The amount of surface of the defect covered by the dense fibrous and fibrocartilagenous repair tissue and the thickness of the repair tissue were significantly greater (P less than 0.05 and P less than 0.01, respectively) in the drilled carpal bones. In addition, the attachment of the repair tissue to underlying chondro-osseous tissue was better in the drilled carpal bones. Canine osteochondroma is an uncommon bony tumor that arises in skeletally immature animals. Consequently, clinical signs typically occur in young dogs as a result of impingement of normal structures by the tumor. Radiographically, osteochondromas are benign in appearance. They are well circumscribed and cause no bony lysis nor periosteal proliferation. Osteochondromas may occur in two forms; solitary or multiple. Although histology and biologic behavior are identical, when in the multiple form the condition has been termed multiple cartilaginous exostoses. Malignant transformation of multiple cartilaginous exostoses has been reported in three mature dogs. We report two dogs with malignant transformation of solitary spinal osteochondromas. Both underwent transformation to osteosarcoma. Despite the benign radiographic appearance of osteochondromas and multiple cartilaginous exostoses, clinical signs should alert the clinician to the possibility of malignant transformation.  相似文献

Bone cell cultures were evaluated to determine if osteogenic cell populations at different skeletal sites in the horse are heterogeneous. Osteogenic cells were isolated from cortical and cancellous bone in vitro by an explant culture method. Subcultured cells were induced to differentiate into bone-forming osteoblasts. The osteoblast phenotype was confirmed by immunohistochemical testing for osteocalcin and substantiated by positive staining of cells for alkaline phosphatase and the matrix materials collagen and glycosaminoglycans. Bone nodules were stained by the von Kossa method and counted. The numbers of nodules produced from osteogenic cells harvested from different skeletal sites were compared with the use of a mixed linear model. On average, cortical bone sites yielded significantly greater numbers of nodules than did cancellous bone sites. Between cortical bone sites, there was no significant difference in nodule numbers. Among cancellous sites, the radial cancellous bone yielded significantly more nodules than did the tibial cancellous bone. Among appendicular skeletal sites, tibial metaphyseal bone yielded significantly fewer nodules than did all other long bone sites. This study detected evidence of heterogeneity of equine osteogenic cell populations at various skeletal sites. Further characterization of the dissimilarities is warranted to determine the potential role heterogeneity plays in differential rates of fracture healing between skeletal sites.  相似文献

Destructive lesions of the axial region of the proximal sesamoid bones were identified by radiography in eight fetlocks and seven lame adult horses. Lameness ranged from 2 to 5 (mean 4; scale 1 to 5) at the time of examination, with a duration of 10 days to two years (mean 5.6 months). Destructive lesions involved both proximal sesamoid bones when examined radiographically and were situated primarily at the level of the mid-body and apical region of the axial borders. Some lesions were cystic, whereas others eroded the axial border more diffusely. Scintigraphy revealed markedly increased activity within the proximal sesamoid bones of the clinically lame limb of four of the five horses examined. In four horses, post mortem computed tomography revealed axial border bone destruction and cavitary lesions within cancellous bone of affected proximal sesamoid bones. Lesions seen by computed tomography were larger than those identified on radiographic examination. Cavitary lesions not seen radiographically were identified in the proximal sesamoid bones of two clinically unaffected fetlocks examined for comparison in two of the seven horses. Evidence of acute, subacute or chronic/reparative osteomyelitis of the axial region of the proximal sesamoid bones was seen in the 10 fetlocks identified as abnormal from radiography or computed tomography. Also, three horses had septic synovitis of the flexor sheath of the clinically affected limb; of these, two had septic arthritis of the fetlock joint.  相似文献

Objective—To determine and compare the in vitro pullout strength of 5.5-mm cortical versus 6.5-mm cancellous bone screws inserted in the diaphysis and metaphysis of adult equine third metacarpal (MCIII) bones, in threaded 4.5-mm cortical bone screw insertion holes that were then overdrilled with a 4.5-mm drill bit to provide information relevant to the selection of a replacement screw if a 4.5-mm cortical screw is stripped. Study Design—In vitro pullout tests of 5.5-mm cortical and 6.5-mm cancellous screws in equine MCIII bones. Sample Population—Two independent cadaver studies each consisting of 14 adult equine MCIII bones. Methods—Two 4.5-mm cortical screws were placed either in the middiaphysis (study 1) or distal metaphysis (study 2) of MCIII bones. The holes were then overdrilled with a 4.5-mm drill bit and had either a 5.5-mm cortical or a 6.5-mm cancellous screw inserted; screw pullout tests were performed at a rate of 0.04 mm/second until screw or bone failure occurred. Results—In diaphyseal bone, the screws failed in all tests. Tensile breaking strength for 5.5-mm cortical screws (997.5 ± 49.3 kg) and 6.5-mm cancellous screws (931.6 ± 19.5 kg) was not significantly different. In metaphyseal bone, the bone failed in all tests. The holding power for 6.5-mm cancellous screws (39.1 ± 4.9 kg/mm) was significantly greater than 5.5-mm cortical screws (23.5 ± 3.5 kg/mm) in the metaphysis. There was no difference in the tensile breaking strength of screws in the diaphysis between proximal and distal screw holes; however, the holding power was significantly greater in the distal, compared with the proximal, metaphyseal holes. Conclusions—Although tensile breaking strength was not different between 5.5-mm cortical and 6.5-mm cancellous screws in middiaphyseal cortical bone, holding power of 6.5-mm cancellous screws was greater than 5.5-mm cortical screws in metaphyseal bone of adult horses. Clinical Relevance—If a 4.5-mm cortical bone screw strips in MCIII diaphyseal bone of adult horses, either a 5.5-mm cortical or 6.5-mm cancellous screw, however, would have equivalent pullout strengths. A 6.5-mm cancellous screw, however, would provide greater holding power than a 5.5-mm cortical screw in metaphyseal bone.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the clinical, radiographic, ultrasonographic, and arthroscopic findings associated with tenosynovitis of the carpal synovial sheath induced by exostoses that originate from the caudal surface of the physeal scar of the distal radius and determine the results of surgical removal of those exostoses in horses. DESIGN: Retrospective study. ANIMALS: 10 horses. PROCEDURE: Medical records of horses with effusion in the carpal synovial sheath and lameness evaluated from 1999 to 2003 were examined. RESULTS: All horses had a history of intermittent mild to moderate effusion of the carpal synovial sheath and lameness of 1 forelimb. Results of regional perineural and intrathecal anesthesia of the carpal synovial sheath confirmed that the lameness originated in the carpal synovial sheath. Radiography revealed exostoses originating from the caudal cortex of the distal radius at the level of the closed physis. Arthroscopy was performed for confirmation and removal of exostoses that penetrated the carpal synovial sheath and impinged on the deep digital flexor tendon. All horses returned to previous athletic activity. One horse had a recurrence of clinical signs 12 months after surgery, which resolved with medical treatment. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Tenosynovitis of the carpal synovial sheath and lameness were caused by impingement of exostoses of the caudal radius on the lining and contents of the carpal synovial sheath. Although the clinical signs and surgical treatment were similar to that caused by osteochondromas, these exostoses developed at the level of the closed physis of the distal radius and were not radiographically or histologically similar to osteochondromas.  相似文献

A radiographic study of healing patterns of nongrafted and grafted basilar osteotomies of proximal sesamoid bones in 14 horses was performed. Osteotomies were created in one proximal sesamoid bone of each fromt leg. One was treated by an autogenous rib graft, and the other was left nongrafted. Wedge-shaped cortical bone, corticocancellous bone with multiple drill holes, and chips of cancellous hbone were used as autogenous grafts. Presurgical, surgical, and postsurgical radiographic examinations were performed. The longest follow-up period was 40 weeks. High detail radiography of 3-mm bone sections and microangiography were also perofromed. Radiographic interpretation of lack of bone healing was erroneous in approximately one-half of the cases. Lack of an external bridging callus was incorrectly interpreted as lack of bony union. If noted, periosteal new bone formation failed to develop into a pattern of bridging callus. Radiographs did not permiit detection of the osteotomy line entering the articular surface or displacement of distal fragments. From angiography obtained ten weeks after surgery, the pattern of blood supply was similar in nontreated and grafted sesamoid bones. Microangiography showed rich vascularization of the cancellous graft and callus, reflecting good healing activity, whitle vascularization of the osteotomy site was absent in the nontreated osteotomies.  相似文献

Navicular bones from the four limbs of 95 horses, classified in 9 categories, were studied. The effects of age on navicular bone morphometry and histomorphometry were estimated, after adjustment of the data to even out the effects of front and rear limbs, morphometrical type, sex, weight, and size.All the external measurements of the navicular bone decreased significantly with increasing age. From the histomorphometrical data, cortical bone volume decreased with age in most horses, whereas cancellous bone volume and, in particular, the marrow spaces increased. The increase in the cancellous bone volume could have resulted from tunnelling of the internal part of the cortex, which converted it progressively into a porous trabecular-like structure. Trabecular bone volume also decreased with age and the trabecular lattice changed dramatically to become disconnected in aged horses. These observations corresponded closely to those reported for ageing of the skeletal system in humans.However, in sporting horses, the navicular cortical bone volume increased with age and the cancellous bone volume decreased. Exercise appeared to have decreased bone resorption and increased bone formation at the endocortical junction. The cancellous bone architecture was also improved, in that the trabecular lattice and trabecular bone volume remained unchanged in aged sporting horses. Our findings confirmed that exercise may be good practice to prevent age-related bone loss.  相似文献

Synovial hemangioma was diagnosed in an 8-year-old castrated male Belgian Sheepdog with lameness of 3 months' duration. Pain, soft-tissue swelling, and hemarthrosis were localized to the left stifle joint. Projections of synovial membrane with reddish-purple nodules, excised via arthrotomy, were composed histologically of variably sized vascular channels that were lined by well-differentiated endothelial cells and separated by fibrous septa. Distension of some channels resulted in endothelial disruption, thrombosis, hemorrhage, necrosis, and focal spindle-cell proliferation. The limb was amputated to remove remaining neoplastic tissue. The hemangioma extended focally into the joint capsule and popliteal soft tissue but did not invade skeletal muscle or bone. The dog was free of detectable neoplasia 6 months after amputation. Synovial hemangioma is a rare benign vascular proliferation in people, most commonly in the knee, and should be included in the differential diagnosis for canine synovial tumors.  相似文献

The results of 12 dogs with antebrachial deformity treated by ulnar ostectomy, radial osteotomy and external skeletal fixation are presented. Postoperative complications were seen in only one dog; a delayed union requiring placement of autogenous cancellous bone graft at a second surgery to achieve healing. Postoperatively, owners reported limb function was good in almost all cases, although they were less pleased with the cosmetic appearance.  相似文献

A 2 month old quarter horse colt had multiple skeletal abnormalities of the left fore limb, including two supernumerary metacarpal bones, two supernumerary carpal bones, abnormal carpal bone development, and a valgus deformity originating at the carpal joint. The largest supernumerary metacarpal bone was removed completely, a portion of the smaller supernumerary metacarpal bone was removed, and the leg was placed in a tube cast. Surgical treatment improved the clinical appearance and prevented further injury to the limb. The carpal joint width remained increased but the carpal valgus deformity partially responded to hemicircumferential periosteal transection. The foal was sound 2 1/2 years after surgery.  相似文献

Blood flow distribution was studied in hind limb bones and joint cartilage from four ten week old and four 20 week old pigs using 141Ce-microspheres. In general, blood flow rate was greater in the epiphyseal and metaphyseal cancellous bone than in the cortical bone and joint cartilage. In the epiphyseal cancellous bone, blood flow rate was three to tenfold greater (P less than 0.01) in the surface 2 mm layer than in the remaining deeper bone in all femoral and tibial samples examined. In the joint cartilage, blood flow rate in the femoral condyle was greater (P less than 0.05) than in the proximal femur, patella, central tarsus and metatarsus in ten week old pigs, and was greater (P less than 0.05) in the femoral condyle than in the patella and metatarsus in 20 week old pigs. A significant (P less than 0.05) age-associated decrease in the rate of blood flow was observed in the femoral, patellar and metatarsal cartilage. Within the femoral condyle, no differences in blood flow were found between areas associated with relatively high versus relatively low incidences of osteochondrosis.  相似文献

The daily requirement for calcium and phosphorus by giraffes to sustain the growth and maintenance of their skeletons is large. The source of sufficient calcium is browse. The source of necessary phosphorus is obscure, but it could be osteophagia, a frequently observed behaviour in giraffes. We have assessed whether bone ingested as a result of osteophagia can be digested in the rumen. Bone samples from cancellous (cervical vertebrae) and dense bones (metacarpal shaft) were immersed in the rumens of five sheep, for a period of up to 30 days, and the effect compared to immersion in distilled water and in artificial saliva for 30 days. Distilled water had no effect on the bones. Dense bone samples were softened by exposure to the saliva and rumen fluid, but did not lose either calcium or phosphorus. In saliva and rumen fluid the cancellous bone samples also softened, and their mass and volume decreased as a result of exposure to saliva, but in neither fluid did they lose significant amounts of calcium and phosphorus. We conclude that although saliva and rumen fluid can soften ingested bones, there is an insignificant digestion of bones in the rumen.  相似文献

To compare and summarize the mechanisms, frequencies of occurrence, and classification schemes of spontaneous, experimental, and genetically engineered mouse skeletal neoplasms, the literature was reviewed, and archived case material at The Jackson Laboratory was examined. The frequency of occurrence of spontaneous bone neoplasms was less than 1% for most strains, with the exceptions of osteomas in CF-1 (5.5% and 10% in two studies) and OF-1 outbred strains (35%), and osteosarcomas in NOD/ShiLtJ (11.5%) and NOD-derived (7.1%) mice. The frequency was 100% for osteochondromas induced by conditional inactivation of exostoses (multiple) 1 (Ext1) in chondrocytes, osteosarcomas induced by tibial intramedullary inoculation of Moloney murine sarcoma virus, and osteosarcomas induced by conditional inactivation of Trp53-with or without inactivation of Rb1-in osteoblast precursors. Spontaneous osteogenic neoplasms were more frequent than spontaneous cartilaginous and vascular types. Malignant neoplasms were more frequent than benign ones. The age of occurrence for spontaneous neoplasms ranged from 37 to 720 days (M = 316.35) for benign neoplasms and 35 to 990 (M = 299.28) days for malignant. In genetically engineered mice, the average age of occurrence ranged from 28 to 70 days for benign and from 35 to 690 days for malignant. Histologically, nonosteogenic neoplasms were similar across strains and mutant stocks; osteogenic neoplasms exhibited greater diversity. This comparison and summarization of mouse bone neoplasms provides valuable information for the selection of strains to create, compare, and validate models of bone neoplasms.  相似文献

A 2-year-old 400-kg female American bison was admitted for evaluation and treatment of an open fracture of the right metacarpal bones 3 and 4. Radiography revealed osteolysis of the distal metaphysis and epiphysis, with extensive bony callus formation along the dorsoproximal and proximomedial aspects extending distally to the proximomedial aspect of the proximal phalanx. Evidence of periosteal or bony proliferation at the fracture site or along the distal segment of the third and fourth metacarpal bones was not visible, suggesting that the distal fracture fragment was becoming a sequestrum. Treatment consisted of soft tissue debridement and placement of the limb in a full-limb cast. The cast was changed every 4 weeks until the sequestrum was removed and the bone healed. It is rare for the distal half of a long bone to sequester following fracture. Additionally, it is remarkable that the sequestrum served as a buttress, which prevented collapse of the bone until the sequestrum was replaced by functional bony callus.  相似文献

Objectives : To evaluate the diagnostic merits of scintigraphy in dogs with clinically obscure lameness origin. Methods : In 43 dogs, the scintigraphic findings were compared with the results of subsequent radiological, computed tomography and/or arthroscopic findings and/or additional neurological examination. Results : In all dogs, focal increased uptake was found in one or more joints or bones. The presence of associated pathology was confirmed by radiography, computed tomography and/or arthroscopy of the limb region of interest. Additional neurological examination was performed when indicated. In cases of elbow pathology, unilateral involvement of the elbow was confirmed with computed tomography/arthroscopy in 14 cases, while bilateral increased uptake could not be confirmed with radiography or computed tomography in three cases. Three dogs showed an increased activity in one joint on the bone scan, while computed tomography, arthroscopy or radiography revealed bilateral joint disease. Generalised mild increased radionuclide uptake in all joints and bones was observed in the lame limb in 15 forelimbs and five hindlimbs. Generalised prominent uptake of an entire limb was noted in three cases suffering from neurological disease. Clinical Significance : Scintigraphy may provide information on areas of increased radionuclide uptake, thereby aiding in the localisation of obscure lameness. Generalised mild increased uptake of radionuclide in all joints and bones in the lame limb may occur in the older dog. The generalised prominent uptake, seen in three cases with neurological disease, may resemble reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome seen in human beings.  相似文献
