The aim of this study was to verify the hypothesis that the health and growth of turkey poults may be improved by supplementing diets fed to parent flocks with available selenium. Experimental poults originated from parent flocks fed with diets containing 0.3 mg/kg inorganic selenium (control group Se(M)) and organic selenium (experimental group Se(O)). Egg yolk selenium content was comparable in both flocks (0.72 and 0.70 mg/kg d.m., respectively). Eggs from the Se(O) flock had a significantly lower content of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances - TBARS (31.13 vs. 53.10 nmol/g, p > 0.001). Se(O) group poults were characterized by higher activity of glutathione peroxidase (7.54 vs. 5.92 U/mL, P = 0.001) and superoxide dismutase (89.30 vs. 79.23 U/mL, P = 0.026). The thigh muscles of Se(O) group birds had significantly higher selenium concentrations (0.74 vs. 0.57, p = 0.045) and a significantly lower TBARS content (38.42 vs. 65.01, p = 0.001). No differences were found between the groups with respect to the content of total protein, albumins and uric acid, and the activites of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and lactate dehydrogenase (DLH) in day-old poults. On day 28, groups Se(O) and Se(M) differed in the activity of ALT (20.50 vs. 26.33, p = 0.05) and SOD (87.29 vs. 100.02 U/mL, p = 0.035). There were no differences between the groups regarding the percentages of T lymphocyte subpopulations CD4+, CD8+, CD4+CD8+ and B lymphocyte subpopulations (IgM+) at 1 and 28 days of age. Over the experimental period, mortality rates were similar in both groups (7.32 and 8.87%), and so were the final body weights of birds (1108 vs. 1135 g). The results of the study show that the dietary supplementation of organic selenium in turkey parent flocks reduces the rate of oxidation processes in the egg and in the tissues of newly-hatched poults, yet it has no effect on the analyzed parameters of cell-mediated immunity and the growth performance of birds during the first five weeks of their life.  相似文献

Two feeding bioassays were conducted to study the mortality pattern, incidence of edema and ascites formation and plasma composition of turkey poults fed diets containing varying levels of toxic fat (fat contaminated with polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins) and/or salt. No significant changes in plasma concentrations of electrolyte and total protein and packed cell volume were observed in slaughtered poults fed diets containing toxic fat compared with poults fed a normal diet. However, a positive dose-response relationship between levels of dietary toxic fat (0,2 and 5%) and incidence of mortality with edema, ascites and hydropericardium was observed in poults fed diets containing 1% salt. The toxic effects of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins were accentuated by increasing the level of salt (0.5, 1 and 3%) in the diet. Mortality started at nine days of age and increased on days 10 and 11. The present experiments demonstrated that gross pathological changes similar to those reported for “chick edema disease” caused by feeding polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, could also be produced in young turkey poults. The etiology of the toxic effects of these organic compounds in edema formation is discussed.  相似文献

Selenium may be related to the hepatic metabolism of the coumarin compounds aflatoxin B1 and warfarin. Selenium evidently increased the pharmacologic activity of warfarin, probably due to a displacement of warfarin from albumin by selenium, the close relationship among selenium, vitamin E, and sulphur-containing groups (eg, glutathione), or the antioxidant effect of selenium. A diet containing selenium in a concentration of 2.5 mg/kg of feed was protective against the toxic effects of both coumarins in pigs given 4 daily oral doses of 0.2 mg/kg of body weight. Selenium, as glutathione peroxidase, at least in part, protects the hepatic cells against the toxic effects of aflatoxin B1 and warfarin. The protection was demonstrated by alteration of clinical responses and hematologic (prothrombin times), electrophoretic, and clinical chemistry values. It also was demonstrated that selenium at 2.5 mg/kg of feed does not produce toxic effects; however, dietary selenium at a concentration of 5 mg/kg (and in the presence of both toxic agents) was toxic for young pigs within the 3-week experimental period. Warfarin was more active as an anticoagulant than aflatoxin B1.  相似文献

Turkeys were fed a diet containing 50 or 150 ppb aflatoxin for 11 or 13 weeks or fed these diets for 11 weeks and then the control diet for 1 or 2 weeks. Aflatoxins B1 and M1 were found in liver, kidney, gizzard, and feces of poults fed the diets for 11 or 13 weeks. However, in turkeys fed the control diet for 1 or 2 weeks after the 11-week feeding trial, no residues of aflatoxin were found in the feces or tissues, except for some aflatoxin B1 remaining in detectable amounts in the gizzard. No mortality was attributable to aflatoxin, and there were no notable differences among groups in weight gains, feed conversion, or histopathologic changes in selected tissues. The response to a second inoculation with sheep erythrocytes was significantly lower in poults given dietary aflatoxin than in controls. This reduced antibody response was not observed when a Pasteurella multocida vaccine was administered.  相似文献

The consumption of moderately poisonous levels of toxic groundnut meal by turkey poults induced a degree of tolerance to aflatoxin Poults thus `conditioned' gained more than `unconditioned' birds on successively higher levels of aflatoxin and were enabled to survive and gain on rations which killed mature turkeys. Ingestion of aflatoxin led to marked alterations in the serum electrophoretic patterns followed in a few weeks by a return to nearly normal patterns. Subsequent increases in aflatoxin intake induced only minimal alternations in the serum patterns but the tolerance appeared unrelated to the hepatotoxic effect because extensive pathological changes developed in the liver.  相似文献

Five components (selenium, glutathione peroxidase, copper, superoxide dismutase, and vitamin E) of the antioxidant system of turkey poults were examined to determine if they play any role in the knockdown (KD) syndrome. All flocks were provided with feed formulated to contain monensin at 54-60 g/ton. Flock data were analyzed as a case-control study with three treatment groups (KD-affected and unaffected turkey poults from a KD flock and poults from an unaffected flock [control]). Affected turkey poults had lower (P < 0.001) serum vitamin E levels compared with unaffected poults from KD flocks or poults from unaffected flocks. No significant differences were observed for the other parameters evaluated but there was a trend towards lower copper and superoxide dismutase values in affected birds. It appears that serum vitamin E concentrations in turkey poults may play a significant role in susceptibility to or protection against KD syndrome. Other components of the antioxidant system may also be involved, and complex interactions among several body systems may be critical.  相似文献

Ten turkey poults each were placed in one of four groups: control, thyroxine (T4), furazolidone (FZ), and FZ + T4. Thyroxine (T4), at a concentration of 1 ppm, was included in the ration of poults fed T4 and FZ + T4, and furazolidone (FZ), at a concentration of 700 ppm, was included in the ration of poults fed FZ and FZ + T4 from 2 to 5 weeks of age. Levels of plasma T4 decreased significantly (P less than or equal to 0.05) between 2 and 5 weeks in control and FZ poults. At 5 weeks, plasma T4 levels were significantly (P less than or equal to 0.05) lower in FZ poults than in control poults and significantly (P less than or equal to 0.05) lower in the FZ + T4 poults than in the T4 poults. Exogenous administration of T4 had no effect on development of the round heart syndrome or on body weight, but significantly increased feed consumption in FZ-fed poults during weeks 4 (P less than or equal to 0.05) and 5 (P less than or equal to 0.01). Inclusion of T4 in the ration increased plasma levels of the hormone 12x in both T4 and FZ + T4 poults and significantly (P less than or equal to 0.05) increased myocardial glycogen content in T4 poults but not in FZ + T4 poults.  相似文献

Aflatoxicosis represents one of the serious diseases of poultry, livestock and other animals. The cause of this disease in poultry and other food-producing animals has been attributed to the ingestion of various feeds contaminated with A. flavus. This toxigenic fungus is known to produce a group of extremely toxic metabolites, of which aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is most potent. Avian species especially chicks, goslings, ducklings and turkey poults are most susceptible to AFB1 toxicity. The toxic effects of AFB1 are mainly localized in liver as manifested by hepatic necrosis, bile duct proliferation, icterus and hemorrhage. Chronic toxicity in those birds is characterized by loss of weight, decline in feed efficiency, drop in egg production and increased susceptibility to infections. The incidence of hepatocellular tumors, particularly in ducklings, is considered to be one of the serious consequences of aflatoxicosis. Even though prevention and avoidance are the best way to control aflatoxicosis, natural contamination of crops with A. flavus is sometimes unavoidable. Such aflatoxin-contaminated feeds can be decontaminated using various methods which mainly focus on physical removal or chemical inactivation of the toxins in the feeds. Moreover, dietary additives such as activated charcoal, phenobarbital, cysteine, glutathione, betacarotene, fisetin and selenium have also been reported to be effective in the reduction of aflatoxicosis in poultry.  相似文献

Six hours post-hatch, large white turkey poults were inoculated intranasally with 5 X 10(7) organisms of the "W" isolate of Bordetella avium. Three hours after inoculation and subsequently on days 7, 10, 14, 21, and 28 postinoculation, 30 infected and 30 uninfected control poults were injected intramuscularly with alpha methylparatyrosine (AMPT, 250 mg/kg), and an additional 30 of each group received a saline vehicle. Three hours after AMPT injection, whole brains from treated and untreated poults from both infected and control groups were removed, weighed, and frozen until assayed for norepinephrine (NE), dopamine (DA), and serotonin (5-HT). B. avium-infected poults had a significant reduction in steady-state NE and Da and a greater depletion of NE and DA after AMPT treatment compared with control poults. Infected poults had significantly reduced whole brain 5-HT concentrations, which persisted through 21 days postinoculation. Altered brain NE, DA, and 5-HT concentrations suggest that the B. avium-infected poults may be less able to cope with additional stressors.  相似文献

High mortality in 1-week-old commercial turkey poults was attributed to the accidental substitution of dicalcium phosphate in the diet for corn. At necropsy of the affected birds, lesions were observed in the upper gastrointestinal tract, suggesting acute ingestion of a caustic substance. Mortality and gross and microscopic lesions were reproduced experimentally in turkey poults fed diets similar to the diet fed in the field case. The cause of these lesions was attributed to increased pH due to the phosphoric acid content of the diet.  相似文献

The study was conducted to investigate the effects of mannanoligosaccharide (MOS) and probiotic supplementation on haematological and immunological parameters in turkeys. A total of 72, 15-day-old white hybrid converter turkey poults were used in this study. Poults were assigned into three groups, each group consisted of six poults and the trial was repeated four times. The control group was fed a basal diet without supplemented probiotic and MOS, and treatment groups were fed either 1 g/kg MOS or probiotic added diets. At the end of the 15-week treatment period, samples of blood were collected to determine immunological and haematological values. The comparison among the groups showed that both the probiotic and MOS supplementation resulted in significant increases (P < 0.05) in the serum IgG and IgM levels, and significant decreases (P < 0.05) in the peripheral blood T lymphocyte percentage compared with those of the control group. Mean serum IgG level (7.06 g/l) was significantly higher (P < 0.05) in poults supplemented with probiotic compared with MOS (6.76 g/l). It was observed that the probiotic supplementation caused statistically significant increases (P < 0.05) in the erythrocyte count, haemoglobin concentration and haematocrit values, but MOS supplementation did not have a significant effect (P > 0.05) on these parameters. Total leucocyte and differential leucocyte counts were not affected by dietary MOS and probiotic supplementation. These results show that MOS or probiotic may elevate IgG and IgM levels in turkey. The MOS and probiotic that enhance immunoglobulin levels will have a more positive effect on growth performance, production and turkeys' ability to resist disease.  相似文献

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for detection of Bordetella avium infection in turkey poults was developed. One-week-old poults challenged intratracheally with 10(12) colony-forming units of B. avium had detectable titers (greater than or equal to 11), with an average of 13.6% positive samples when the birds were 6 to 11 weeks old. The method was sensitive enough to detect maternal antibodies to B. avium in poults up to 3 weeks of age. The same poults challenged at 1 week of age had 100% tracheal infection up to 3 weeks of age, which dropped to 0% by 6 weeks. The method resulted in no false-positive samples (titer = 0) from birds not infected with B. avium and tested weekly between 4 and 11 weeks of age. Antibodies in turkey flocks infected with Newcastle disease virus, hemorrhagic enteritis virus, and Mycoplasma meleagridis, and birds infected with Escherichia coli had no apparent cross-reactivity to the B. avium antigens used in the ELISA. The percentages of B. avium-positive serum samples collected from different turkey flocks did not significantly differ (P greater than 0.05) when samples were tested by the developed ELISA at different times, an indication of the reproducibility of the method.  相似文献

Studies were conducted to assess the performance of turkeys fed diets containing lactose. Study 1 consisted of 96, mixed-sex turkey poults that were housed in battery cages and fed diets containing 0 (8% cornstarch), 0.5, 1, 2, 4, or 8% lactose from 0 to 6 wk. Study 2 used 360, mixed-sex turkey poults that were raised in floor pens and fed a commercial diet and diets containing 0 (4% starch), 0.5, 1, 2, or 4% lactose from 0 to 6 wk. Diets and water were offered ad libitum throughout both trials. The objectives were 1) to determine the effect of lactose on turkey performance and 2) to establish the optimum level for lactose inclusion in diets. In Study 1, feed intake, BW, fecal ammonia and nitrogen, and feed efficiency were determined. Diet composition, BW, feed intake, total body and carcass composition, cecal pH, volatile fatty acids (VFA) and lactic acid were measured in Study 2. Turkeys consuming the 4% lactose diet gained the most weight (P < 0.01) compared with other treatments in Study 1, and lactose improved feed efficiency. In Study 2, all lactose diets resulted in heavier BW (P < 0.05) compared with the commercial diet. Turkeys consuming diets with 0.5, 1, 2 or 4% lactose had less total body fat compared with turkeys consuming a commercial or 0% lactose diet (P < 0.05).  相似文献

The effect of T-2 toxin (trichothecene mycotoxin) consumption on Broad-Breasted White turkey poults and White Leghorn chicks was studied. Groups of ten 8-day-old poults were fed rations containing T-2 at 10 ppm, 2ppm, or 0 ppm (controls) for a period of 4 weeks; a 4th group (inanition control) was fed control rations equal to the amount consumed by the group fed rations containing T-2 at 10 ppm during the previous 24 hours. A similar experimental design was used to study the effect of the toxin on 1-day-old chicks. The thymus glands of the poults given the feed containing 10 ppm were markedly decreased in size compared with thymus glands from poults in the control group, 0.182 vs 0.331 (percentage of body weight). There was no significant (P less than or equal to 0.05) decrease in thymus gland size in poults given 2 ppm or in the inanition controls. Dietary treatment did not appear to affect the size of the bursa or spleen of the poults. Histopathologic examination of thymus glands from poults given 10 ppm of T-2 revealed a depletion of cortical lymphocytes. Chicks appeared less sensitive to T-2 toxin than did the poults. There was no effect by any dietary treatment on the size of the thymus gland, bursa, or spleen of chicks. Reductions were noticed in feed efficiency and weight gain. There was no effect of T-2 toxin on agglutinating antibody formation to Pasteurella multocida bacterin.  相似文献

We designed this study to compare the replication potential of turkey coronavirus (TCV) and its effect in chickens and turkeys and to study the effect of singleand combined infection of turkey poults with TCV and astrovirus. We studied the pathogenicity of TCV in experimentally inoculated turkey poults and chickens by observing the dinical signs and gross lesions. Two trials were conducted with 1-day-old and 4-wk-old specific-pathogen-free turkey poults and chickens. One-day-old turkey poults developed diarrhea at 48 hr postinoculation. Poults euthanatized at 3, 5, and 7 days postinoculation had flaccid, pale, and thin-walled intestines with watery contents. The 4-wk-old turkeys had no clinical signs or gross lesions. One-day-old and 4-wk-old chicks developed no clinical signs or gross lesions although the TCV was detected in gut contents of the birds throughout the experimental period (14 days). In another experiment, mean plasma D-xylose concentrations in 3-day-old turkey poults inoculated with TCV, turkey astrovirus, or a combination of both viruses were significantly lower than in the uninoculated controls.  相似文献

Two strains of capsular serogroup B Pasteurella multocida isolated from avian hosts (swan and turkey) were evaluated for virulence based on lethality for turkey poults. Groups of poults were exposed intramuscularly to various concentrations of organisms of each strain. Both strains were virulent. The strain isolated from a turkey was highly virulent: all exposed poults died in less than 24 hours, including those exposed to only 79 organisms. This highly virulent strain was neither highly invasive nor highly infective: intrapharyngeal exposure with 7.9 x 10(6) organisms resulted in death of only one of five poults, and attempts to isolate the organism from pharyngeal mucosae and livers of surviving poults were unsuccessful. The high degree of virulence of a B capsular group strain isolated from a turkey indicates a disease-producing potential for members of this uncommon serogroup of P. multocida.  相似文献

Broiler chicks and turkey poults were divided at hatching into experimental and control groups. Experimental birds were fed a diet contaminated with 4 ppm ochratoxin A, whereas the ration of control birds was confirmed to be mycotoxin free. Birds were killed at fortnightly intervals up to 10 weeks old and skeletal changes were investigated. Almost all experimental birds developed generalised skeletal osteopenia with disturbed endochondral and intramembranous bone formation. Histological changes in diaphyseal cortices could account for the reduced breaking strength of bones from birds fed mycotoxin, which have been reported by others. One bird showed changes consistent with a diagnosis of hypophosphataemic rickets. In others, however, osteoid formation was defective and changes were interpreted as osteoporosis. Although it might be tempting to suggest that osteoporosis is a result of a direct toxic effect of ochratoxin on osteoblasts, the effect of inanition, inactivity and general debility may be equally important.  相似文献

The effect of three treatments on Salmonella hadar infection in turkey poults was examined. The three treatments were: (A) a single injection of gentamicin, (B) peroral treatment with anaerobic culture derived from cecal contents of an adult turkey (Nurmi culture), and (C) combination of treatments A and B. Nurmi culture was significantly more effective than gentamicin treatment. Nurmi culture along with gentamicin reduced the number of shedding birds, but a higher proportion of birds became carriers compared with the groups given Nurmi culture only. Gentamicin injection alone did not prevent the spreading of infection in larger groups raised on litter, but it did so in one experimental group raised on wire floor.  相似文献

Two pen trials and 2 field trials were conducted to determine whether a direct-fed microbial (DFM; Primalac) was effective in improving turkey productive performance. In the pen trials, typical turkey diets were formulated with and without Primalac. All feed was provided by a commercial feed mill. In trial 1, Large White male turkey poults were placed in 48 pens (18 birds/pen, 24 pens/treatment) on the day of hatch and were reared to 20 wk. In trial 2, Large White female turkey poults were placed in 48 pens (30 birds/pen, 24 pens/treatment) on the day of hatch and were reared to 18 wk. Cumulative FCR was significantly improved for birds fed DFM feed compared with birds fed control feed at 20 wk in trial 1 and at 8 wk in trial 2. Body weight was significantly greater for birds fed DFM feed compared with birds fed the control feed through 12 wk in both trials. In 2 field trials, 2 brooder houses and 4 grow-out houses were paired on each farm (4 brooder houses and 8 grow-out houses total). All birds received the same feed provided by the integrator. The DFM was provided in the water from placement to market in 1 brooder house and in the 2 matching grow-out houses. Breeder flocks were equally represented in both brooder houses within each trial. Approximately 12,000 male poults were placed in each brooder house and were transferred to 2 grow-out houses at 5 wk. Although no statistical analyses were computed for the field trials, there was a nominal improvement in performance associated with the DFM: mean livability was increased by 3.5%, mean BW was increased by 0.9 kg (2 lb), mean total weight removed from the farms was increased by 13,706 kg (30,153 lb), mean FCR was improved by 0.165, and cost of production was reduced by $0.0195/kg ($0.043/lb) of BW by the DFM. In conclusion, the DFM product (Primalac) used in these studies was effective in improving turkey live performance.  相似文献

A strain of Escherichia coli isolated from the yolk sac of stunted turkey poults was administered orally to day-old large white poults. Poults were inoculated with either 0.1 ml of sterile broth or 0.1 ml of a 10(-2) dilution of a 24-hr E. coli culture containing 3.4 x 10(8) viable bacteria per ml. Two levels of dietary protein (28 or 22%) were fed from 1 day to 3 weeks of age. Following E. coli inoculation of 3.4 x 10(5) viable bacteria at day one, body weight gain and feed consumption from 0 to 3 weeks of age were numerically increased 4.5 and 2.1%, respectively, and feed efficiency was significantly increased 2.4%. E. coli had a greater effect on performance of poults fed the 28% protein diet than on poults fed the 22% protein diet. Metabolism studies, conducted from 7 to 10 and from 17 to 20 days postinoculation, showed no significant changes in the measurements of nutrient utilization due to E. coli other than a 17% increase in nitrogen retention from 17 to 20 days by those poults fed the 28% protein diet.  相似文献
