Parasitic nematodes, even in the absence of any clinical disease, can cause a reduction in voluntary feed intake in housed ruminants. This trial examined these effects on young cattle grazing pastures. Twenty dairy heifer calves, born in the previous autumn, were blocked according to liveweight and allocated to one of two groups: either untreated or dosed with an IVOMEC((R)) (ivermectin) SR Bolus 10 days prior to turnout on 1 May 1998. The groups grazed separately on two paddocks on predominately ryegrass swards. Liveweights were recorded every 28 days and faecal samples taken for worm egg counts at the same time.In mid-May and mid-July, for two 14-day periods, animals were paired within treatment groups and transferred to one of 10 replicate paddocks of similar sward height and herbage mass. Grazing behaviour and herbage intake were measured during these periods. In mid-May, 2 weeks after turnout, treated and untreated animals showed no difference in grazing behaviour or daily intake of grass. By mid-July, 10 weeks after turnout, the untreated heifers spent on average 105min less per day in grazing time and their daily herbage intake was 0.78kg dry matter (DM) per day lower than that of the treated animals. Residual sward height, mass and composition in the trial paddocks reflected these differences. There were no clinical signs of gastrointestinal parasitism in the untreated group up to this time; in July, the mean worm egg count in this group was 120 eggs per gram (e.p.g.) of faeces. Faecal samples from several untreated animals were positive for lungworm larvae by July, mild clinical signs of bronchitis were observed in two of these animals in mid-July. Over the period from turnout until mid-July, the untreated heifers showed a reduction in mean daily liveweight gain of 150g, compared to the treated animals.  相似文献

The progress of two groups of 10 calves, which had previously been exposed to trichostrongyle infections by grazing infected pastures, was monitored from housing in October to slaughter the following April. Each of the animals of one group had received a morantel sustained release bolus, the other control group remained untreated. The high faecal egg counts and serum pepsinogen concentrations, together with the clinical signs of ostertagiosis observed in the controls in October, persisted during the first month of housing but improved thereafter. From late November onwards, no difference in feed intake and digestive efficiency was observed between the groups. The control calves exhibited a significantly greater feed conversion efficiency over the period February-April, (7.5 vs. 12.3 kg feed kg-1 liveweight gain, P less than 0.001). This reduced the liveweight advantage of the MSRB group over the controls at housing to 25 kg.  相似文献

Young male Wistar rats, adapted to single daily administration of feed (from 8.00 to 10.00 a.m.) were studied for the intake of feed, weight gains, and feed consumption per weight gain unit after administration of Superdep insulin in the dose of 10 u kg-1 of body weight. The time limitation of access to food reduced the over-all intake of feed and weight gains and adversely affected the utilization of feed, expressed as consumption per 1 g of weight gain. The administration of insulin partly compensated the adverse effect of the reduced feed intake; this was manifested by better utilization of feeds by the experimental group, in comparison with the control animals.  相似文献

The effect of a single anthelmintic treatment of cattle during the early dry season was studied. One hundred and sixty-six N'Dama cattle, 1–3 years old, were selected from five herds. There were 65 males and 101 females divided into two groups of 83 animals each. One group was treated with fenbendazole at 7.5 mg/kg body weight by mouth in November 1992; the other group remained as the untreated control. At monthly intervals from November 1992 to April 1993, each animal was weighed and the number of eggs/g of faeces (epg) was determined. The infective larvae (L3) were examined following culture of pooled samples from each group of animals. In April 1993, 6 animals (3 treated and 3 controls) from the herds under study were necropsied. The difference in the weight gains (4.6 kg) of the two groups was highly significant (p<0.0001). The difference in the weight gains and the epg between the treated and control groups was influenced by the age of the animals. Of the treated animals, one contained no nematodes, one contained only 25Oesophagostomum radiatum, and the third contained 25Cooperia L4. The three untreated animals were all infected. It was concluded that the treatment in early dry season, with an anthelmintic effective against both adults and larvae, led to a significant reduction in egg counts, to elimination of adults and hypobiotic larvae and, consequently, to an increase in the body weight gain by the treated animals.  相似文献

Twenty dogs of mixed local East African breeds were used. Five of the dogs were uninfected controls and 15 were infected with T. brucei (ILRAD 273). Five of the infected dogs were untreated controls, five were treated with a high curative dose of diminazene aceturate, (7 mg kg-1 body weight (wt.), and five were given a subcurative dose of isometamidium chloride (1 mg kg-1 body wt.). The drugs, given at 8 days post infection (d.p.i..), led to apparent recovery. The antibody titres, however, remained high in both groups and at 42-49 d.p.i. there was at least one relapse in each treatment group. Parasite populations from relapsed animals were more resistant to the drugs than the original infecting populations. The implications of these findings are discussed.  相似文献

Treatment with the synthetic glucocorticoid dexamethasone sodium phosphate increased the feed intake of sheep within 24 h. A single treatment with the longer-acting compound dexamethasone trimethylacetate had a slower effect, but resulted in improved feed intake and enhanced body weight gain over a period of 7 to 14 days. Treatment was effective in sheep housed individually and in sheep penned in groups. The improvement in body weight gain disappeared 15 to 20 days after a single treatment, but in most studies treated sheep had less variability in weight change than untreated sheep at this time. A statistically significant increase in body weight gain was observed in 8 of 11 trials; in the other 3 trials, it appeared that the feed intake of the untreated sheep was already maximal. Wethers treated with dexamethasone trimethylacetate on arrival at an assembly point for live export arrived in the Middle East 23 days later with a lower mean weight loss, partly because fewer sheep lost a significant amount of weight.  相似文献

During six consecutive years the impact of the housing type on the performances of bulls was investigated with eight different diets. In total 261 fattening young Belgian white-blue bulls were involved; 127 animals were tied in straw-bedded stalls, and 134 bulls were kept in loose houses on straw bedding. Both groups were housed in the same closed uninsulated stable. With two of the eight diets the tied animals had a slightly, but not significantly, higher daily liveweight gain than the loose-housed bulls. The average difference was 68 g per day higher for loose-housed animals, 1160 g compared with 1092 g per day for the tied animals. The higher weight gain was demonstrated during almost the whole experimental period, and was significantly different (P < 0.01).The daily feed intake was always higher for the loose housed animals; the mean daily starch unit intake per kg W0 · 75 was 58.5 units for the loose-housed bulls versus 52.2 units for the tied ones. The feed conversion for the tied animals was 4.51 starch equivalent versus 4.79 for loose-housed animals. The dressing percentage was not dependent of the housing system, although the weight loss by fasting before slaughtering was 0.5% higher for loose housed animals than for tied animals; the difference was significant (P < 0.01). The mean weight loss by fasting was 2.5 and 2.0%, respectively.  相似文献

In a balance trial with 10 pigs (mean body mass 50 kg) the influence of a bacterial protein supplement (Alcaligenes eutrophus) on N-metabolism was investigated. The bacteria were included into the diet at levels of 7 and 14% at the expense of extracted soyabean meal. Thus bacterial "pure protein" (bacterial non-nucleic acid N X X 6.25) amounted to 30 and 60% of the protein of the ration. Consuming 2 kg of feed dry matter per day the animals of the control group (I) and the experimental groups (II and III) ingested 48 g, 52 g and 55 g of total N respectively. The difference in N-intake is explained by the additional nucleic acid-N, amounting to 19,8% of total bacterial N. Daily weight gain (on average 1054 g) and feed conversion efficiency (feed ingested/weight gain; on average 1,9) were relatively improved at the highest dietary level of bacterial cell mass. Faecal N-excretion was increased significantly, whereas renal N-excretion remained unchanged. Mean apparent N-digestibility was 87,4% showing no significant difference between the experimental groups. N-balance values were noticibly increased following the intake of the bacterial protein supplement. The excretion of urinary urea-N was slightly reduced whereas 4-6 times as much allantoin-N was excreted when bacteria were fed. It is calculated that about 80% of the bacterial purines are renally excreted as allantoin and uric acid.  相似文献

Scientific feeding experiments were carried out with 7 male castrated pigs of the genetic origin land race pig X large white with the test animals fed individually and the rations containing approximately the same amounts of protein, amino acids, minerals and vitamins but varied amounts of energy. Energy intake was adjusted to three levels: 100%, 85% and 70% of semi-ad-libitum intake (group 1 = 100%). With regard to protein supply there was a subdivision into 30-60 and 60-100 kg live weight. In addition to this, the digestibility of the feed mixture used and the N-balance were determined in both fattening periods. Having reached 100 kg live weight, the animals were slaughtered and a number of slaughtering parameters was determined. The average daily live weight gain in the three test groups was 749, 664 and 540 g over the whole fattening period. The feed expenditure was 3.7, 3.9 and 4.3 kg mixed feed per kg live weight gain so that, with regard to live weight performance and feed expenditure the group with the highest energy supply showed the best results. The level of energy supply had a remarkable influence on the composition of weight gain; thus the amount of fat in the carcass of the animals of groups 3 was by 1.8 kg and 2.5 kg resp. lower than of the animals in groups 2 and 1.  相似文献

Scientific feeding experiments were carried out with 5 castrated male pigs and 4 female animals of the genetic origin "Camborough" in the live weight range between 30 and 100 kg with a subdivision at 60 kg. In each test group the animals were fed individually and received rations with approximately equal contents of protein, amino acids, minerals and vitamins but different energy contents. Energy intake was adjusted to 3 levels of 100%, 85% and 70% of semi-ad-libitum intake. Apart from that, the digestibility of the feed mixtures used in the 2 fattening periods was determined. Having reached a live weight of 100 kg, 7 representative animals per group were slaughtered and a number of slaughtering parameters were registered. In all three test groups the daily live weight gain over the complete fattening period was very high (846, 819 and 778 g). Though the weight gain in group 3 with 70% of the energy supply of group 1 is significantly lower than in the other two groups, it is, however, only 70 g lower than in group 1. Consequently, the feed expenditure (2.6 kg mixed feed per kg live weight gain) in group 3 is by 20% lower than in group 1, in which the feed expenditure is 3.2 kg mixed feed per kg live weight gain. There were no significant differences on the weight gain performances and the registered carcass parameters between sows and castrated male pigs. Observed deviating tendencies are discussed.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Apramycin, a new aminocyclitol antibiotic produced by a strain ofStreptomyces tenebrarius, has been evaluated as a treatment of colibacillosis in post-weaning pigs. Results are reported from 3 trials in Greece, involving 222 animals. The drug was administered in the feed at 75 ppm or 100 ppm for 21 days. Apramycin at both levels controlled diarrhoea and sickness. Mortality was significantly reduced at 100 ppm. The average daily gain of the treated animals over the three week treatment period was improved by 67% (P<0.001) for the 100 ppm group and by 42% (P<0.01) for the 75 ppm group in comparison with the untreated controls. During the same period the feed conversion ratio was improved by 46% (P<0.001) in the 100 ppm apramycin group and by 26% (P<0.05) in the 75 ppm group as compared to the untreated controls. Average daily feed intake was significantly greater in the treated groups of animals than in the untreated groups.  相似文献

The efficacy of levamisole pour-on against Dictyocaulus viviparus was compared to that of subcutaneous levamisole injection. Eighteen calves were raised individually and artifically infected with D. viviparus larvae. Faecal samples were collected 27 and 28 days later and larvae per gram (l.p.g.) determined. The animals were then divided into three comparable groups. Group 1 animals remained untreated as controls. Group 2 animals received levamisole 10% w/v subcutaneous injection at a dose of 5 mg kg-1 and Group 3 received levamisole pour-on 20% w/v at a rate of 10 mg kg-1 applied transdermally. Results of l.p.g. measurements from faecal samples taken 7 and 8 days post-treatment indicated a dramatic reduction in the worm burden of animals in both treatment groups. Necropsies at 14 days post-treatment revealed few adult worms in these groups, indicating a 99 and 98% kill rate for pouron and subcutaneous injection, respectively.  相似文献

The strategic use of single therapeutic doses of closantel, tetramisole or sustained low-level administration of albendazole in feed pellets in controlling naturally acquired parasitic gastroenteritis in sheep was investigated on a farm in semi-arid Rajasthan, India. A total of 303 5- to 6-month-old sheep were divided into three groups. Two groups were dosed with single therapeutic doses of closantel and tetramisole and the third group was given a low-level medication with albendazole through feed pellets for 30 days. Faecal egg counts revealed significantly lower counts (p<0.001) in the group treated with closantel compared to the other two groups. The faecal egg counts in the group receiving sustained low-level albendazole rose after withdrawal of the medication but remained significantly lower than those in the group treated with tetramisole up to 7 weeks after treatment (p<0.05). On the other hand, in the group treated with tetramisole, the mean faecal egg count rose from 3 weeks after treatment and remained continuously higher than those in any other group up to 12 weeks after treatment. The closantel-treated group gained more body weight but the first six-monthly greasy fleece yield was greater in the group treated with medicated pellets. During the first 3 months of the experiment, three animals in the group treated with tetramisole died of parasitic gastroenteritis. Following sustained low-level administration of albendazole in feed pellets, the plasma disposition curve of both the sulphoxide and sulphone metabolites reached its plateau level by day 5 and remained almost constant thereafter. The comparative cost-effectiveness of the three treatment regimes during the first 3 months of treatment was best for the group treated with closantel followed by the group treated with medicated feed pellets.  相似文献

Two experiments were completed to compare the supplemental effects of yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae and sub-therapeutic antibiotics in high-fibre and low-protein diets for broiler chicks. In experiment 1, yeast was added at 1.5, 3.0 and 6.0 g kg-1 while penicillin, tylosin or neoterramycin were added at 150 mg kg-1 into different batches of a high-fibre diet containing 250 g kg-1 palm kernel meal. Saccharomyces cerevisiae and antibiotics increased BW, BWG, FCR, feed intake, carcass and breast weights above the control. Small intestine weight was reduced by antibiotics, while yeast caused a lower deposition of abdominal fat. Liver weights of different treated broilers were similar. The performance indices were superior on penicillin and 3.0 g kg-1 yeast compared to other supplements evaluated. In the second experiment, 1.5 and 3.0 g kg-1 of yeast, and 0.75 mg kg-1 of procaine penicillin, zinc bacitracin and tylosin were separately added to a 180 g kg-1 crude protein diet. Performance of the chicks with additives was compared with unsupplemented negative and positive controls containing 180 and 210 g kg-1 crude protein respectively. Broilers fed with supplements had superior BW, BWG, FCR and feed intake compared to the negative control, but carcass data were similar. Dietary penicillin increased BW, BWG, feed intake more than other supplements, but yeast stimulated higher FCR. Data from both studies indicated that Saccharomyces cerevisiae comparatively increased growth and carcass weight and reduce abdominal fat, therefore, it can serve as a natural substitute for antibiotics in broiler diet.  相似文献

Records on 1,180 young Angus bulls and heifers involved in performance tests were used to estimate genetic and phenotypic parameters for feed intake, feed efficiency, and other postweaning traits. The mean age was 268 d at the start of the performance test, which comprised 21-d adjustment and 70-d test periods. Traits studied included 200-d weight, 400-d weight, scrotal circumference, ultrasonic measurements of rib and rump fat depths and longissimus muscle area, ADG, metabolic weight, daily feed intake, feed conversion ratio, and residual feed intake. For all traits except the last five, additional data from the Angus Society ofAustralia pedigree and performance database were included, which increased the number of animals to 27,229. Genetic (co)variances were estimated by REML using animal models. Direct heritability estimates for 200-d weight, 400-d weight, rib fat depth, ADG, feed conversion, and residual feed intake were 0.17 +/- 0.03, 0.27 +/- 0.03, 0.35 +/- 0.04, 0.28 +/- 0.04, 0.29 +/- 0.04, and 0.39 +/- 0.03, respectively. Feed conversion ratio was genetically (r(g) = 0.66 ) and phenotypically (r(p) = 0.53) correlated with residual feed intake. Feed conversion ratio was correlated (r(g) = -0.62, r(p) = -0.74) with ADG, whereas residual feed intake was not (rg = -0.04, r(p) = -0.06). Genetically, both residual feed intake and feed conversion ratio were negatively correlated with direct effects of 200-d weight (r(g) = -0.45 and -0.21) and 400-d weight (r(g) = -0.26 and -0.09). The correlations between the remaining traits and the feed efficiency traits were near zero, except between feed intake and feed conversion ratio (r(g) = 0.31, r(p) = 0.23), feed intake and residual feed intake (r(g) = 0.69, r(p) = 0.72), and rib fat depth and residual feed intake (r(g) = 0.17, r(p) = 0.14). These results indicate that genetic improvement in feed efficiency can be achieved through selection and, in general, correlated responses in growth and the other postweaning traits will be minimal.  相似文献

Immunocastration of boars leads to a maintenance of growth harmone (GH) and a loss of anabolic hormones [androgens, oestrogens, insulin‐like growth factor (IGF‐I)] but an increase of voluntary feed intake. The aim of the experiment was to clarify whether IGF‐I is increased by increasing feed supply in immunocastrated boars leading to improved anabolism. Two groups of six boars were given 2 or 3 kg of feed (13.5 MJ ME/kg) daily from 18–28 weeks of age. Because in boars feed intake is limited by gonadal hormones, a group with further increased feed supply could not be included. Until week 22 (second vaccination) gonadal steroids in blood were normal but dropped rapidly thereafter. Growth harmone levels did not change following vaccination. Pigs allocated 3 kg feed had 28% higher circulating IGF‐I after the second immunization compared with pigs fed 2 kg feed daily. Higher IGF‐I was associated with increased weight gain (682.4 g/day vs. 466.7 g/day; p < 0.01) and protein synthesis (13C‐leucine infusion; 405 g/day vs. 247 g/day, p < 0.01). Protein breakdown (urea) was not different. Body fat (D2O) decreased in the low feed group from 15.2% (week 19) to 6.1% (week 25). In the high feed group it remained at the level found before second vaccination (13.7% vs. 15.0%). It is concluded that in the phase of reduced testicular steroids which inhibit appetite it is possible to increase feed intake which in turn increases IGF‐I and protein deposition without accumulating excessive fat.  相似文献

Three groups of male, castrated piglets of the German Landrace breed, weight range 3-30 kg, were used to study the relation between fattening performance and blood parameters when feeding rations containing different amounts of fat. The fat content of the rations was either 5% (group I), 18% (group II) or 35% (group III). Concomitantly with the increased metabolizable energy (ME) content of the ration the content of digestible protein (DP) was increased and the amount of feed reduced in order to guarantee an equal intake of ME and DP in all three groups. The digestibility of the crude nutrients and protein retention of the subjects were determined in nine subsequent trials each lasting 7 days. At a body weight of 27 kg the blood concentrations of insulin, glucose, free fatty acids, neutral lipids and cholesterol were determined at different times after feeding. In addition, an oral glucose tolerance test was made and the in-vitro synthesis of fat from glucose was measured. The apparent digestibility of fat amounted, unexpectedly, to approximately 94% on the high rat rations II and III. In all groups a significant positive relation between body weight and digestibility of the fat was determined. Despite equal daily intakes of ME in all groups, in group III daily weight gain and protein retention were 7% (p less than 0.01) and 4% (p less than 0.01) higher than in group I, respectively. Blood urea levels of group III were 67% (p less than 0.01) lower than in group I. The mean daily nitrogen retention of the three groups rose gradually from 4 g at a body weight of 5 kg to 16-17 g at a body weight of 25 kg. The feed conversion of group I was lower by 22 and 36% as compared to groups II and III, respectively. Highly significant differences were observed among either groups (p less than 0.01). It has been calculated that in group III the consumption of ME/kg weight gain was about 8% (p less than 0.05) lower than in the two other groups. According to the increased fat percentage of the rations, body protein content diminished from 17,1% in group I to 16,5 and 16% in groups II and III, respectively. Only the difference between groups I and III proved to be significant (p less than 0.05). In group I feed intake resulted in an increase in the insulin level by 55% (p less than 0.05) whereas glucose did not change significantly.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)  相似文献

Previous studies showed that supplementation of sows' diets with L-carnitine increases body weights of their piglets at birth. This study was performed to investigate whether piglets of sows treated with L-carnitine differ in their growth potential from that of piglets of untreated control sows after weaning. It was also investigated whether supplementation of piglets' diets with L-carnitine improves their growth after weaning. In two trials, piglets of the first litters of primiparous sows (trial 1) and the second litters of the same sows (trial 2) were divided into four groups: group 1, piglets of control sows, fed a control diet; group 2, piglets of control sows fed a diet supplemented with 30 mg L-carnitine/kg; group 3, piglets of L-carnitine-treated sows, fed a control diet; group 4, piglets of L-carnitine-treated sows fed a diet supplemented with 30 mg L-carnitine/kg. Mean initial body weights of the piglets of the four groups were identical. They were 8.5 kg in trial 1 and 12.5 kg in trial 2. Diets were fed ad libitum over a period of 35 days. Piglets from sows treated with L-carnitine did not differ in body weight gains, feed intake and gain : feed ratio from those of control sows. In trial 1, piglets supplemented with L-carnitine had higher body weight gains (p < 0.005) and showed a tendency towards a higher gain : feed ratio (p = 0.09) than piglets fed the control diets. In trial 2, no significant difference in these parameters emerged between piglets fed the diet supplemented with L-carnitine and those fed the control diet. In conclusion, this study shows that dietary L-carnitine treatment of sows does not improve the growth potential of their piglets after weaning under the conditions of equal initial body weights. The study also shows that L-carnitine supplementation of their diets improves the growth performance in light piglets of primiparous sows.  相似文献

In two growth experiments with 30 lambs per group the influence of urea (1-2% of the ration) and straw (20-30% of the ration) on the performance was studied under conditions of intensive fattening. The content of native crude protein in the rations varied between 10.1 and 18.4% of the DM. In experiment 1 the lambs of the two groups which received mixed feed for fattening lambs without urea on average consumed with 1.02 and 1.11 kg DM resp., 696 and 757 EFUcattle resp. and 173 and 189 g crude protein resp. per animal and day. The groups with wheat or barley and urea consumed 1.06 and 0.96 kg DM resp., 714 and 627 EFUcattle resp. and 209 and 155 g crude protein resp. Their weight gain of 247 g/animal and day was 24% and that of 230 g resp. 26% higher than that in the control groups without urea. The lowest dry matter intake (0.91 and 0.82 kg resp.) was shown by the animals of the groups which received wheat or barley without urea. In the second experiment the control group achieved an average daily weight gain of 327 g at an expenditure of 2.24 kEFUcattle/kg weight gain. Despite a partly higher dry matter intake, the daily EFUcattle intake was between 12.2 and 24.5% lower in the straw groups and energy expenditure increased between 12.0 and 27.8%. Urea supplements of between 1 and 2% improved dry matter, EFUcattle and crude protein intake and thus weight gain.  相似文献

Three groups of six pigs each (live weight at the beginning of the experiment 20 kg) were given a cereal ration with 8% rape seed meal. Group I did not receive a J supplement and was fed ad libitum. The rations of groups II and III were supplemented with 1 mg J/kg feed. The feed intake of group II was limited to the amount consumed by group I (pair fed); group III received the feed ad libitum. The daily weight gains of the 3 groups were 327, 377 and 613 g, feed expenditure 3.79, 3.68 and 3.47 kg/kg gain. In an N balance experiment carried out with 3 animals each from groups I and II, 41.4% of the N taken in group I and 43.8% in group II were retained (p greater than 0.05). Liver, intestinal fat and leaf were heavier in group I (p less than 0.01), the protein content of the empty body, the bones and bristles significantly lower than in group II. Protein retention in group II was 14% higher than in group I. In case of iodine deficiency protein retention is lower, energy retention, however, is largely unchanged.  相似文献
