Striga asiatica and Rhamphicarpa fistulosa are important parasitic weeds of rain‐fed rice, partly distributed in similar regions in sub‐Saharan Africa (SSA). It is not evident whether their ecologies are mutually exclusive or partially overlapping. In Kyela, a rice‐growing area in south Tanzania where both parasites are present, three transects of about 3 km each across the upland–lowland continuum were surveyed in June 2012 and 2013. A total of 36 fields were categorised according to their position on the upland–lowland continuum as High, Middle or Low and soil samples were taken. In each field, parasitic and non‐parasitic weed species were identified in three quadrats. Additionally, in two pot experiments with four different moisture levels ranging from wilting point to saturation, influence of soil moisture on emergence and growth of parasites was investigated. Striga asiatica was observed in higher lying drier fields, while R. fistulosa was observed in the lower lying wetter fields. Furthermore, non‐parasitic weed species that were exclusive to S. asiatica‐infested fields are adapted to open well‐drained soils, while species that were exclusive to R. fistulosa fields are typical for wet soils. The experiments confirmed that S. asiatica is favoured by free‐draining soils and R. fistulosa by waterlogged soils. These results imply that changes in climate, specifically moisture regimes, will be crucial for future prevalence of these parasitic weeds. The non‐overlapping ecological range between their habitats suggests that their distribution and associated problems might remain separate. Thus, management strategies can be focused independently on either species. 相似文献

Can native grass species outcompete invasive goldenrods? Results of a replacement series experiment 下载免费PDF全文
Invasion by alien species is a serious threat to the biodiversity and function of semi‐natural grasslands and may impede restoration efforts in degraded meadows due to high competitiveness. Goldenrods (Solidago and Euthamia species) are considered among the most injurious invaders of grasslands in Central Europe. We tested the hypothesis that native grass species are able to outcompete the invasive goldenrods. A replacement series experiment was established to determine levels of interference between native grass taxa and goldenrods. In the experiment, four alien goldenrod species (Solidago altissima, Solidago canadensis, Solidago gigantea and Euthamia graminifolia) and one native species (Solidago virgaurea) were studied. The native grasses were represented by Lolium perenne (forage and turf varieties) and Festuca pratensis (forage variety). Total biomass was higher in the mixture of species compared with that in monoculture. The higher total biomass was due to higher productivity of the goldenrod species, whereas that of the grasses was reduced. These results demonstrated the high competitiveness of alien goldenrods compared with native grass species. 相似文献

The claim by many authors that Spinitectus inermis (Zeder, 1800), a narrowly specific parasite of European eels Anguilla anguilla (L.), is a rare species is considered at three levels: its geographical range, its frequency of occurrence compared to other eel parasites and its relative abundance in component communities. The parasite is widely distributed in freshwater throughout the European range of the eel but its occurrence is erratic and unpredictable, being known from only 8 countries. Surveys of eel parasites in the United Kingdom and in Continental Europe show that it is present in only 13% of British and 29% of continental localities. This satisfies one of the criteria for rarity. When present, its prevalence ranges from 1.8% to 43.3%, so it can be considered rare in some localities but in a few it may be common and on occasion it may be the dominant species in the gastro-intestinal community. Populations of S. inermis are almost always characterised by high levels of overdispersion, even at low prevalence. The species also displays an ability to colonise a locality following introduction there. Overall it meets many of the criteria of a rare species including a restricted distribution and a low frequency of occurrence and so it can be considered to exhibit diffusive rarity. 相似文献

Incorrect labelling of plants in trade and misidentification are widespread. Likewise, in trade numerous names are being used for the ornamental aquatic plant known as ‘Kariba weed’, but rarely the correct scientific name Salvinia molesta Mitch. For inspection services of EPPO member countries, correct identification of S. molesta has become important since the species was added to the EPPO A2 List and the List of Union concern in accordance with EU regulation 1143/2014 based on an EPPO Pest Risk Analysis (PRA) for the species. Inspections and a targetted survey of Salvinia plants in trade in the Netherlands were performed and additional material was obtained from wild sources in South Africa, Hungary and the United States. Specimen identification was verified by comparison with the herbarium collection at Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden and with the sequences available in NCBI GenBank database. This paper provides the tools to correctly identity the relevant Salvinia species. 相似文献

Gas-exchange and biomass growth was measured on barley plants sprayed with glyphosate in order to investigate what might cause the growth increase observed in low dose glyphosate treated plants. Gas-exchange over 7 days after spraying was measured together with photosynthesis/irradiance and photosynthesis/CO2 curves. In addition, growth experiments at 100, 200, 400 and 800 ppm CO2 were conducted. Dark respiration rates increased in response to the glyphosate treatment, but so did photosynthesis at doses of 11-45 g a.e. ha−1. The increase in photosynthetic rates was mainly due to an increased efficiency of CO2 fixation under irradiance and CO2 saturated conditions. The photosynthesis measurements were confirmed by the growth experiments, where glyphosate growth stimulations were observed only at 400 and 800 ppm CO2. It can, hence, be concluded that low glyphosate doses can stimulate photosynthesis, though the causes behind this increase is still not understood. 相似文献

Spread patterns of a Grapevine leafroll-associated virus 1 (GLRaV-1) epidemic and a mealybug infestation survey over 10 year were recorded in two Burgundy French vineyards to investigate the relation between them. The temporal evolution of leafroll spread at both study sites was compared on disease incidence data with logistic regression models. We first tested if the spatial distribution of the disease and the mealybug were aggregated using permutation methods, then we tested the independence between the two spatial patterns by randomly shifting one pattern. In Bonzon, an increase from 5 % to 86 % of leafroll prevalence was observed over an 8-year time span, whereas leafroll prevalence remained stable around 5 % in Marsannay-la-Côte during the same period. In Bonzon, the disease spread rapidly from older neighbouring vineyards in four main patches while no spread of the disease was recorded from infected vines in Marsannay-la-Côte. The mealybug Phenacoccus aceris was recorded on 74 % of vines in Bonzon throughout the study and only 6 % of vines in Marsannay-la-Côte. In the latter location, the disease was not associated with the presence of the mealybug, so that it may have arisen from infected plant material escaping the sanitary inspection. In Bonzon, the significant statistical correlation between the mealybug distribution and diseased plants suggests that P. aceris was responsible for the rapid spread of GLRaV-1 in the vineyard. This is the first report of GLRaV-1 natural spread in Europe. 相似文献

There are eight provinces and autonomous regions (Gansu Province, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Tibet Autonomous Region, Qinghai Province, Shanxi Province, and Shaanxi Province) in Northwest China, most areas of which are located in arid and semi-arid regions (northwest of the 400 mm precipitation line), accounting for 58.74% of the country's land area and sustaining approximately 7.84×106 people. Because of drought conditions and fragile ecology, these regions cannot develop agriculture at the expense of the environment. Given the challenges of global warming, the green total factor productivity (GTFP), taking CO2 emissions as an undesirable output, is an effective index for measuring the sustainability of agricultural development. Agricultural GTFP can be influenced by both internal production factors (labor force, machinery, land, agricultural plastic film, diesel, pesticide, and fertilizer) and external climate factors (temperature, precipitation, and sunshine duration). In this study, we used the Super-slacks-based measure (Super-SBM) model to measure agricultural GTFP during the period 2000-2016 at the regional level. Our results show that the average agricultural GTFP of most provinces and autonomous regions in arid and semi-arid regions underwent a fluctuating increase during the study period (2000-2016), and the fluctuation was caused by the production factors (input and output factors). To improve agricultural GTFP, Shaanxi, Shanxi, and Gansu should reduce agricultural labor force input; Shaanxi, Inner Mongolia, Gansu, and Shanxi should decrease machinery input; Shaanxi, Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, and Shanxi should reduce fertilizer input; Shaanxi, Xinjiang, Gansu, and Ningxia should reduce diesel input; Xinjiang and Gansu should decrease plastic film input; and Gansu, Shanxi, and Inner Mongolia should cut pesticide input. Desirable output agricultural earnings should be increased in Qinghai and Tibet, and undesirable output (CO2 emissions) should be reduced in Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, Gansu, and Shaanxi. Agricultural GTFP is influenced not only by internal production factors but also by external climate factors. To determine the influence of climate factors on GTFP in these provinces and autonomous regions, we used a Geographical Detector (Geodetector) model to analyze the influence of climate factors (temperature, precipitation, and sunshine duration) and identify the relationships between different climate factors and GTFP. We found that temperature played a significant role in the spatial heterogeneity of GTFP among provinces and autonomous regions in arid and semi-arid regions. For Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia, and Tibet, a suitable average annual temperature would be in the range of 7°C-9°C; for Gansu, Shanxi, and Ningxia, it would be 11°C-13°C; and for Shaanxi, it would be 15°C-17°C. Stable climatic conditions and more efficient production are prerequisites for the development of sustainable agriculture. Hence, in the agricultural production process, reducing the redundancy of input factors is the best way to reduce CO2 emissions and to maintain temperatures, thereby improving the agricultural GTFP. The significance of this study is that it explores the impact of both internal production factors and external climatic factors on the development of sustainable agriculture in arid and semi-arid regions, identifying an effective way forward for the arid and semi-arid regions of Northwest China. 相似文献

Grapevine leafroll disease (GLD) is caused by a number of viruses in the grapevine leafroll-associated virus complex (GLRaVs). GLRaV-3 is the most commonly found GLRaV and is transmitted by mealybugs (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) and soft scale insects (Hemiptera: Coccidae). A series of investigations were conducted to understand spatio-temporal patterns of GLRaV-3 and mealybugs, and to examine management strategies of mealybugs under the environmental conditions of Virginia, USA. During the study, a rapid increase (185 % per year) of GLRaV-3 positive vines was observed at an experimental vineyard. Spatial Analysis by Distance IndicEs (SADIE) indicated a mix of aggregated, random, and uniform distributions of GLRaV-3 within six surveyed vineyards, and a temporal association of GLRaV-3-positive vines over three years at the experimental vineyard. Results from a field experiment in 2009–2011 showed the effect of a delayed dormant application of acetamiprid (Assail, 0.182 L/ha) to be not significantly differing in mealybug abundance from the unsprayed check in 2010 and 2011. Moreover, an application of the contact insecticide beta-cyfluthrin (Baythroid XL, 0.219 L/ha) resulted in significantly higher numbers of mealybugs counted in 2011. This study also demonstrated that GLRaV-3 was spread from mature vines to newly planted sentinel vines during the first growing season, with no apparent effect of prevailing wind direction. Results from another insecticide trial conducted in 2010–2011 demonstrated that both dinotefuran (Scorpion, 0.292 L/ha) and spirotetramat (Movento, 0.439 L/ha) treatments significantly reduced mealybug counts when mealybug populations were high, but only spirotetramat significantly reduced mealybug counts when mealybug populations were low. 相似文献

Can poisons stimulate bees? Appreciating the potential of hormesis in bee–pesticide research 下载免费PDF全文
Hormesis, a biphasic dose response whereby exposure to low doses of a stressor can stimulate biological processes, has been reported in many organisms, including pest insects when they are exposed to low doses of a pesticide. However, awareness of the hormesis phenomenon seems to be limited among bee researchers, in spite of the increased emphasis of late on pollinator toxicology and risk assessment. In this commentary, we show that there are several examples in the literature of substances that are toxic to bees at high doses but stimulatory at low doses. Appreciation of the hormetic dose response by bee researchers will improve our fundamental understanding of how bees respond to low doses of chemical stressors, and may be useful in pollinator risk assessment. © 2015 Society of Chemical Industry 相似文献

Dothistroma needle blight (DNB) emerged in France in the past 15 years. This disease is induced by two closely related species: Dothistroma septosporum and D. pini. Although both species are currently present in France, only D. septosporum was reported in the past. We investigated whether a recent arrival of D. pini in France could be a cause of the DNB emergence. We analyzed herbarium specimens of pine needles with DNB symptoms using polymerase chain reaction techniques to study the past frequency of D. pini in France. We also determined the present distribution within the country of D. septosporum and D. pini and compared it with the spatial pattern of DNB reported in the Département de la Santé des Forêts (DSF; French forest health monitoring agency) database. Although D. pini was detected on herbarium specimens from 1907 and 1965, it was not frequent in France in the past. Today, it is frequent, although not present throughout the country, being absent from the north and the east. There is no relationship between the D. pini distribution in France and the spatial pattern of DNB reported in the DSF database. Thus, the emergence of DNB in France cannot be explained by a recent arrival of D. pini. 相似文献

Several authors have suggested that edible plants could avoid herbivory by mimicking olfactory cues of toxic plants. However, very few studies have been carried out to test this hypothesis. The aims of the present study were to identify the volatiles of three clover species and to test whether a species lacking chemical defences, such as red clover, could avoid being grazed by rabbits by mimicking the volatiles of the cyanogenic white clover. Two main volatiles were identified in all three clover species, and a further two volatiles were present in white clover only. Rabbits presented with a choice between white clover, red clover and red clover sprayed with white clover extract ate significantly more red clover than white or white-flavoured red clover. The results suggest that the volatiles of toxic plants could be used and exploited as a source of natural, safe and effective repellents to control the impact of pest herbivores on plants. 相似文献

Models predicting the effects of cropping systems on weed demography are important tools for testing new rules for integrated weed management that may reduce the use of herbicides and preserve the biodiversity of agro-ecosystems. Such models already exist for a few species and should now be extended to a larger flora, in order to predict and understand the effects of agricultural practices on the evolution of weed communities. This review analysed the literature from 1973 to 2006, focusing on 45 species, to identify past reasons for choosing particular species when modelling the effects of cropping systems on the processes leading to seedling emergence. The frequency or harmfulness of the species were the main reason for studying them. It appears that the studied species were mainly autumn-emerging in north-western Europe cropping systems and summer-emerging in North America; the effects of deep soil tillage were studied mainly in Europe, as simplified sowing techniques are more often practised in North America. A voluminous literature exists on seed persistence in the soil, dormancy, germination and emergence, but rarely with the attempt of establishing generic relationships between species characteristics and model parameters. Until now, such an approach has been mostly developed in ecological studies. Taxa, as well as ecological preferences, seed size and the relationships of these characteristics with weed emergence model parameters should be considered when selecting a range of species for multi-specific modelling purposes. 相似文献

During the past years, nrDNA ITS sequences have supported the identification of many powdery mildew fungi because comprehensive
analyses showed that differences in these sequences have always correlated with the delimitation of different species and
formae speciales of the Erysiphales. Published data, obtained using direct sequencing of the PCR products, suggested that even one to five nucleotide differences
in the ITS sequences delimit different, albeit closely related, species, and/or indicate differences in host range patterns.
Here we show that such differences in the ITS sequences can be detected even in a single sample of a powdery mildew fungus.
We sequenced the ITS region in 17 samples, representing six powdery mildew species, both directly and after cloning the PCR
products. Among these, samples of O. longipes exhibited two or three, samples of O. neolycopersici three or four, those of an Oidium sp. from Chelidonium majus up to seven, and a sample of another Oidium sp. from Passiflora caerulea two different ITS types determined after cloning. No ITS nucleotide polymorphisms were found in samples of O. lycopersici and Erysiphe aquilegiae. This suggests that some powdery mildew taxa are more variable at the ITS level than others. Thus, although the ITS sequences
determined by direct sequencing represent robust data useful in delimitation and phylogenetic analysis of distinct species
of the Erysiphales, these need to be used with precaution, and preferably determined after cloning, especially when dealing with closely related
taxa at species and sub-species levels. With this method a hitherto undetected genetic diversity of powdery mildews can be
revealed. 相似文献

Species distribution models are an important tool to predict potential spread of weeds. While recent progress has improved model performance, there is still concern about the validity of such models, especially when applied to novel geographical regions or climates. This study investigates how different sets of variables influence predicted distributions, considering several measures of model performance and how extrapolation to novel geographical regions may affect results. Potential distributions of three new weeds in New Zealand (Archontophoenix cunninghamiana, Psidium guajava and Schefflera actinophylla) are modelled, by training a model based on global data from native and introduced ranges and projecting it to New Zealand, using Maxent. For each species, four models were calibrated: first with a full set of 19 bioclimatic variables, then with a customised set with selection based on analysis of response curves and finally with two reduced sets of uncorrelated variables. Although AUC across all models was very high (AUC ≥ 0.9), correlations between models ranged between 0.27 and 0.98. Inclusion of all variables predicted larger areas to be suitable in the projected region, with highly unlikely predictions in some areas, especially where bioclimatic variables showed values outside the range of the training data (new environments). Conversely, minimal extrapolation and more realistic predictions of weed distributions were obtained from models including a customised set of variables, and even more so from models including only a reduced set of variables. This study shows that careful selection of variables and investigation into extrapolation are vital in generating more realistic predictions of weed distributions. 相似文献

Endozoochory has been recognised as the most important dispersal mechanism in invasive Prosopis species, because their sugary, tasty pods attract animals and because some of their seeds remain intact after passing through some animals' digestive systems. In this study, we evaluated the role of the camel (Camelus dromedarius) as a potential disperser of the seeds of invasive tree Prosopis juliflora. Four camels of similar weight (ca. 400 kg) and age (ca. 2 years) were each fed with 70 fruits (1000 seeds approximately) of P. juliflora, which were retrieved from the camels' dung at 24‐h intervals for 4 days. The seeds retrieved were tested for germination and viability, along with seeds not eaten by the camels, with and without pericarp. Less than 3% of the seeds eaten were retrieved from the camels' dung. Most of the seeds (74%) were retrieved between 24 and 72 h after ingestion. The passage through the camel gut significantly accelerated and increased seed germination of P. juliflora in comparison with uneaten seeds covered with pericarp (48–75% and 15% respectively). While gut passage liberated P. juliflora seeds from the pericarp, increasing and accelerating their germination, the viability of seeds which had not germinated after germination trials were decreased (ca. ~20%) relative to uneaten seeds that had also not germinated. Our results show that, despite the low recorded seed recovery, camels can potentially disperse seeds of P. juliflora, which is in line with field observation showing P. juliflora expansion along the camels' routes in Gebel Elba National Park, south‐east Egypt. 相似文献
