Summary Phenotypic variation components were estimated with respect to days to heading, flag leaf length and width, plant height, awn and spike length, awn and spike colour, spikelets per spike and seed shrivelling of 84 Syrian durum wheat landrace populations. Multivariate patterns of variation were established through principal component analysis to describe relationships between landrace groups and regions of collection. Agroecological site characteristics and plant traits were compared with respect to patterns of geographical variation. Grouping on the basis of landrace groups proved more discriminative than on the basis of regions of origin. Landraces originating from sites characterized by favourable growth conditions tended to be later in heading and to have longer spikes with longer awns but with less spikelets. The observed relation between favourable growth conditions in the regions of origin and smaller flag leaves may be caused by genotype × environment interaction.Among populations variation was high, and amounted to 96% of the total variation, whereas the remnant 4% was contributed to differences within populations and among lines. Variation among landrace groups and among regions was calculated as 79% and 75% of total variation, respectively.  相似文献

Three hundred twenty germplasm lines of the major Ethiopian cereal, tef, [ Eragrostis tef (Zucc.) Trotter], were evaluated for 20 morphological, phenological and agronomic characters in two-replicated randomized complete blocks at Debre Zeit and Melkassa Agricultural Research Centers in Ethiopia during the 1995 main season. The objectives were to assess the diversity of the lines, and to estimate the broad sense heritability (H) and genetic advance (GA) of the various characters. The mean squares of genotypes were highly significant (p ≤ 0.001) for all the traits. The phenotypic and genotypic coefficients of variation ranged in that order from about 6–40% and 3–23% for days to maturity and grain yield/plant, and days to maturity and number of spikelets/main shoot panicle, respectively. The cluster analysis grouped the genotypes into 14 major complexes consisting of one to 183 lines. Of the 19 principal components involved in explaining the entire variation among the genotypes the first five which had eigenvalues of more than one explained about 73.8%. The first principal component which accounted for about 34% of the total variance was due chiefly to plant height, culm and panicle length, diameters of the two basal culm internodes, main shoot panicle mass and grain yield, number of main shoot panicle branches and spikelets, and days to panicle emergence and maturity. Estimates of H varied from about 22% for length of the lowest main shoot stem internode to 74% for number of main shoot panicle branches. Values of GA (expected from selection of the superior 5% of the lines and expressed relative to the means) ranged from about 3% for days to maturity to 36% for number of spikelets/main shoot panicle. Overall, the study indicated the existence of trait diversity in tef germplasm and this can be exploited in the genetic improvement of the crop through hybridization and selection. Summary Variation and covariation in 15 Vicia faba L. ssp. major populations from Italy. Greece and Egypt were analyzed. Ten quantitative morphobiological characters of agronomical and nutritional interest were observed. Differences among countries of origin were highly significant for all characters except for lowest podded node. Phenotypic distances among populations, both within and among origins, estimated on canonical variates evidenced that the Egyptian populations from a distinct group and that a relevant degree of similarity exists among the Greek and the Italian meterial. The covariation structure within populations, which was studied by means of factor analysis, was comparatively simpler in the Egyptian material than in that form the other two Mediterranean countries. The differences evidenced can be attributed to different gene associations between characters and suggest the possibility of obtaining, through recombination, genotypes agronomically more favorable.Research work supported by C.N.R., Italy, special grant. Summary Six wild barley (Hordeum spontaneum) accessions, from a diverse range of habitats, and two spring-cultivated barleys, were examined for variation in durations of development phases. The durations of the leaf initiation and spikelet initiation phases were longer and spikelet growth phases shorter, in wild than in cultivated barley. Across all wild and cultivated barleys the rate and duration of spikelet initiation were negatively correlated, but neither was related to the number of spikelets per spike. The number of spikelets was positively correlated with the number of leaves and the ratio of the number of spikelets to the number of leaves declined with increasing time to anthesis, indicating that each successive leaf was associated with a diminishing increase in the number of spikelets. The duration of culm elongation and final culm length were shorter in accessions of cultivated barley compared with wild barley. Flowering time is a trait which has a major influence on the quality of forage. In addition, flowering and subsequent seed yields are important traits for seed production by grass breeders. In this study, we have identified quantitative trait loci (QTL) for flowering time and morphological traits of the flowering head in an F1 mapping population in Lolium perenne L (perennial ryegrass), a number of which have not previously been identified in L. perenne mapping studies. QTL for days to heading (DTH) were mapped in both outdoor and glasshouse experiments, revealing three and five QTL for DTH which explained 53% and 42% of the total phenotypic variation observed, respectively. Two QTL for DTH were detected in both environments, although they had contrasting relative magnitudes in each environment. One QTL for spike length and three QTL for spikelets per spike were also identified explaining, a total of 32 and 33% of the phenotypic variance, respectively. Furthermore, the QTL for spike length and spikelets per spike generally coincided with QTL for days to heading, implying co-ordinate regulation by underlying genes. Of particular interest was a region harbouring overlapping QTL for days to heading, spike length and spikelets per spike on the top of linkage group 4, containing the major QTL for spike length identified in this population.  相似文献

Summary The variation in 31 landraces of lentil collected from Yemen Arab Republic was partitioned to estimate the variation between populations and the variation between families within populations by studying a total of 568 progenies of randomly selected plants. There was significant variation between populations and between families within populations in seedling pigmentation, time to flower, time to maturity and plant height, but the predominant source of variation was between populations. This variation was unrelated to altitude of collection. The landraces were equally variable across characters. The implications of this analysis of variation on lentil breeding and germplasm collection are discussed.  相似文献

Summary Forty-eight accessions of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.), collected from Northern to Southern Italy, were analyzed using both univariate and multivariate analysis applied to a set of 12 quantitative traits. Four principal components were found to explain 77% of the total variation in the dependence structure. Productivity characters together with heading time and dimensions of flag leaf appeared to be the major sources of diversity among tall fescue populations. On the basis of the 4 principal components similar populations were clustered according to minimal distance analysis. Seven clusters were identified. The results of cluster analysis confirmed the presence of a remarkable diversity within the germplasm collection and explained why results of a univariate analysis of variance did not reveal significant differences among groups of accessions collected in Northern, Central and Southern Italy. The multivariate approach seemed to point out a problem of genetic erosion of the local germplasm in the Po Valley (Northern Italy) and, on the whole, appeared to be a valid system for tall fescue germplasm evaluation.Research supported by C.N.R., Italy, special grant I.P.R.A., Subject 1.5.1., paper n. 1146.  相似文献

To understand the genetic background of panicle characteristics in temperate japonica rice (Oryza sativa L.), we genetically analyzed DH lines derived from a cross between two temperate japonica rice cultivars, ‘Akihikari’ and ‘Koshihikari’,in 1996 and 1997. Four traits of panicle characteristics, number of primary branches per panicle (NPB), number of secondary branches per panicle (NSB), average number of spikelets on one primary branch (NSP)and average number of spikelets on one secondary branch (NSS), in 212 DH lines were measured, and the interval mapping of QTLs for these traits was carried out using169 DNA markers with an LOD threshold of2.5. Five, three and one putative QTLs for NPB, NSB and NSS were identified,respectively, and no QTLs relating to NSP appeared. The percentages in total phenotypic variation explained by all putative QTLs for NPB were 35.5%: and43.8% in 1996 and 1997, respectively. All putative QTLs for NSB accounted for 35.5%and 27.5% of total phenotypic variation in1996 and 1997, respectively. The QTLs identified in this study will be useful intemperate japonica rice breeding for improved spikelet yield. In a 2-years experiment, 30 wheat cultivars and 21 landraces from different countries were tested under near optimum and drought stress conditions. Plant height, number of sterile spikelets per spike, spikelets per spike, number of kernels per spike, kernel weight per spike, 1000 kernel weight and grain yield were evaluated. The number of kernels per spike, 1000 kernel weight and especially yield were more sensitive to drought stress in the cultivars than plant height and number of spikelets per spike, while in the landraces these traits did not differ under drought stress compared to near optimum conditions. The average yield of cultivars was significantly better than the average yield of landraces under near optimum as well as drought stress conditions. Path coefficient analysis showed that for cultivars under near optimum conditions there was no significant direct association of any of the analysed characters with yield, while under drought stress conditions, number of kernels per spike had a significant positive direct effect. Under drought stress conditions, the number of sterile spikelets displayed a negative direct effect, while kernel weight per spike had a positive direct effect on yield. Hierarchical cluster analysis was used as a tool to classify cultivars and landraces according to their yield ability under near optimum and drought stress conditions. Among the cultivars, two groups out of five and among one of three in the landraces were characterised by high yields in both near optimum as well as under drought stress conditions. Summary Co-isogenic lines of a common wheat, Triticum aestivum, cv. S-615 with each of the following ten major genes were produced by repeated backcrosses; The gene C on 2D chromosome for the compactum character, s on 3D for the sphaerococcum character, Hd on 4B, B1 on 5A, and B2 on 6B for awn suppression, Hg on 1A for glume hairiness, Hp on 4A for peduncle hairiness, Ne1 on 5B and Ne2 on 2B for hybrid necrosis, and v1 on 3B for virescence. Seven of them showed the typical mendelian fashion of inheritance, while three others (C, s and v1) were transmitted at lower frequencies than their corresponding normal alleles.The effects of those major genes on 24 characters of cv. S-615 were investigated, which are summarized as follows: C: Increased node diameter, number of spikelets per ear and spike density, but decreased lengths of all ear rachis, awn, anther, empty and outer glumes, and grain, and grain index. s: Increased culm diameter and thickness, and spike density, reduced lengths of all 1st and 2nd internodes, culm, flag leaf, rachis, awn, anther, empty and outer glumes, and grain, and grain index, and accelerated heading. Hd: Increased number of spikelets per ear and anther length, while decreased length of awn, and empty and outer glumes. B1: Increased 1st internode, rachis, and anther lengths, and grain index, but decreased spike density, awn length and grain thickness. B2: Increased rachis length, number of spikelets per ear, empty and outer glume lengths and grain index, but reduced awn length and grain thickness. Hg: No effects. Hp: Increased number of spikelets per ear. Ne1: Accelerated heading, and increased empty glume length. Ne2: Increased node and culm diameters. v1: No effects.Two species-specific genes, C and s, affected a large number of characters expressed in various developmental stages. These genes were found to have pleiotropic effects, namely, they influenced, at least, two groups of interdependent characters. A total of 415 sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) accessions representing different regions of Ethiopia, Eritrea and a group of introduced lines were evaluated for 15 quantitative characters to determine the extent and geographical pattern of morphological variation. The extent of variation was highly pronounced for agronomically important characters for sorghum. These characters included plant height, days for 50% flowering, peduncle exsertion, panicle length and width, number and length of primary branches per panicle and thousand seed weight. Significant regional variation was also observed for most of the characters. The results implied that environmental factors such as altitude, rainfall, temperature and growing period are important in regional variation. Mean for plant height and for days for 50% flowering showed clinal variation along the gradients of rainfall pattern and growing period in Ethiopia. Moreover, there were significant positive correlation coefficients between most of the characters. This included the correlation between agronomic characters of primary interest in sorghum breeding such as plant height and days for 50% flowering and also between various characters and the altitude of the collection sites. The implications of the results in plant breeding, germplasm collection and conservation as well as the probable sources of the wide range of variation are discussed. Summary Six Vicia faba populations were grown in all possible combinations with six Rhizobium leguminosarum strains in order to estimate the relative importance of the three genetic components of symbiotic variability. Additive genetic effects of host genotype and rhizobium genotype accounted for only 8.9% and 11.8% of the total phenotypic variation. Non-additive variation attriabutable to specific host genotype × rhizobium genotype interactions was by far the largest component of variation and accounted for 73.8% of phenotypic differences. Therefore the greatest improvement in symbiotic nitrogen fixation is likely to arise from simultaneous selection of both symbionts.  相似文献

A collection of 299 secondary hexaploid triticale cultivars and advanced breeding lines from 18 countries, which were considered a representative sample of the existing diversity, was evaluated for morphological and agronomical characters with autumn planting at Lleida, Spain, from 1988 to 1991. The entries were classified as having winter (84) or spring (215) growth habit and among this latter group were complete (73) or substituted (147) types according to CIMMYT's terminology. Winter and spring triticales were grouped by cluster and principal component analyses. Winter triticales were taller with longer growth cycles, longer spikes, and more spikelets per spike than spring types. At early stages they also had prostrate growth. Spring-substituted types were separated from complete material. As a group, spring-substituted triticales differed more from winter types than the spring complete genotypes, which showed intermediate characteristics. Complete types of spring habit had tendency to be taller, with longer spikes, more spikelets per spike and bigger and heavier grains than substituted triticales. Greater variation in morphological and agronomical parameters was detected among winter triticales followed by the complete-spring group.  相似文献

为了研究小麦产量的影响因素,本文对小麦产量的直接和间接影响因子进行分析。利用2005-2008年陕西省长武县中科院长武农业生态站小麦品种‘长武89134’为试验对象,分析其主要农艺性状之间对小麦产量的影响,对农艺性状和产量的关系进行相关分析和通径分析。各种农艺性状中每穗结实小穗数、千粒重和株高与小麦产量之间存在显著正相关关系,每穗粒数与产量之间达到显著的负相关关系,而地上部分总干重、籽粒干重和每穗小穗数与小麦产量的相关关系不显著。通径分析结果表明自变量每穗结实小穗数和株高对小麦产量的存在正向直接作用(r每穗结实小穗数=0.712**,r株高=0.848**,P<0.05),而地上部总干重和每穗粒数则对产量存在着负向直接作用(r地上部分总干重=-0.792**,r每穗粒数=-0.784**,P<0.05)。‘长武89134’产量受到每穗结实小穗数、株高的正向作用和地上部总干重、每穗粒数的负向作用,因此需要主要针对这四种农艺性状进行筛选,在此基础上再并且协调好与其他农艺性状之间的关系,才能获得相对较高的产量。  相似文献

Summary The structure of variation in 67 barley landraces from Syria and Jordan was investigated by using various morphological and developmental traits measured on spike progenies from the landraces grown in a favorable environment in Syria. Factor analysis was used to identify trait complexes that accounted for major proportions of the total variation among landrace populations.Subsequently, the landraces were clustered into nine distinct groups based on their similarity for all traits. Each group showed a close association to specific geographic or environmental factors, indicating that adaptive processes also are operating in current agricultural systems. These results show the usefulness of thoroughly describing the locations where germplasm accessions originate.Finally, I investigated what proportion of the quantitative variation among landraces was due to differences in plant type. Populations were grouped according to their similarity for qualitatively inherited morphological traits. Subsequent analyses of variance on quantitatively inherited traits showed that this type of classification was as effective as geographic grouping in distributing the variance among and within groups. This result suggests that germplasm collections can be arranged according to either geographic information or morphologic similarity. Genetic diversity was studied using RAPD markers among119 coffee (Coffea arabica L.) individuals representing 88 accessions derived from spontaneous and subspontaneous trees in Ethiopia, the primary centre of species diversity, six cultivars grown locally in Ethiopia, and two accessions derived from the genetic populations Typica and Bourbon, spread in the 18th century, which gave rise to the most currently grown cultivars. Twenty-nine polymorphic fragments were used to calculate a similarity index and construct dendrograms. The Ethiopian material was separated from the Typica- and Bourbon-derived accessions and classified in four groups: one with most of the collected material from southwestern Ethiopia and three from southern and southeastern Ethiopia. Almost all detected diversity was found in the southwestern group while the southern and southeastern groups presented only 59% of identified markers. The genetic distances were low between the southwestern group and the southern and southeastern groups, and between the southwestern group and the Typica- and Bourbon-derived accessions. The cultivated coffee derived from the genetic populations Typica and Bourbon appeared little differentiated from wild coffee growing in the southwest. The results supported the hypothesis that southwestern Ethiopian coffee trees could have been introduced recently in the south and southeast. A separate analysis of the 80accessions classified in the southwestern group allowed identifying particular spontaneous- and subspontaneous-derived accessions and redundancies in the collected material from southwestern Ethiopia. RAPD markers did not detect any within-collection polymorphism except for two trees that were identified as off-types in the CATIE field genebank. There is renewed interest in wheat landraces as important sources of genetic variation for agronomic characters. Fifty-three pure lines of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) derived from seven landraces collected from southeastern Iran were used to estimate genetic variation and heritability for 13 developmental and quantitative characters. Path-analysis was used to partition the genetic correlations between grain yield and six grain yield-related traits. Mean values of landraces were also compared with three improved cultivars from California and Iran. Genotypic differences among the landraces and among the pure lines collected from the landraces were highly significant for all characters considered. Compared with the modern cultivars, the landrace genotypes were, on average, later in days to heading and taller than the cultivars but had lower values for number of grains per spike, 1000-grain weight, grain yield and harvest index. Some landrace genotypes were similar to the modern cultivars for grain yield. Moderate to high genetic variation was displayed by number of grains per spike, number of spikes per plant, 1000-grain weight, and harvest index. The heritability estimates ranged from 59% for grain yield to 99% for days to anthesis. Expected genetic advance (as % of the mean) was ≈34% for number of spikes per plant, number of grains per spike, and 1000-grain weight. Days to heading and to anthesis correlated positively with number of spikes per plant, shoot biomass, and straw biomass but negatively with number of grains per spike and harvest index. The strong direct effect of number of spikes per plant on grain yield was completely counterbalanced by its indirect negative effects via number of grains per spike and 1000-grain weight. Number of grains per spike and 1000-grain weight were positively correlated with grain yield, and they had large direct effects. These two characters, however, were negatively correlated and exhibited a substantial counterbalance effect via one another and via number of spikes per plant. The landraces could be improved by intercrossing the promising genotypes identified in this study, with simultaneous selection for earliness, fewer number of spikes per plant, greater number of grains per spike and heavier grains. For further improvement, crossing programs between the landraces and introduced germplasm may be necessary.
