Two groups of rabbits infested repeatedly with Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi and R appendiculatus acquired resistance as evidenced by reduced ectoparasite engorged weights and development of anti-tick antibodies in the hosts. The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using salivary gland antigens of R appendiculatus was able to detect antibody responses to both the homologous and heterologous tick challenges. It was concluded that the immune response in hosts infested by these two tick species stimulates the production of antibodies which show cross reactions.  相似文献

A field study (February 2000 to August 2001) was conducted on communal and commercial farms in the Eastern Cape and North-West Provinces of South Africa to detect the levels of tick resistance to commonly used acaricides. The larvae obtained from engorged females of the one-host tick Boophilus decoloratus, the two-host tick Rhipicepalus evertsi evertsi and the three-host ticks Amblyomma hebraeum and Rhipicephalus appendiculatus were tested against various concentrations of amitraz, chlorfenvinphos and cypermethrin using the Shaw Larval Immersion Test method. Ticks from the communal farms showed higher levels of resistance to cypermethrin and some resistance to chlorfenvinphos whilst no resistance was detected against amitraz. However, ticks from commercial farms were equally resistant to amitraz, chlorfenvinphos and cypermethrin. The B. decoloratus populations tested were considerably more resistant to all the acaricides tested than the R. evertsi evertsi, A. hebraeum and R. appendiculatus populations. This supports the hypothesis that single-host ticks develop resistance faster than multi-host ticks. This trend was recorded on most of the farms where single- and multi-host ticks co-existed. It was concluded that the use of acaricides at high frequencies and high concentrations was one of the main causes of tick resistance in the study areas. Possible factors which caused the resistance problems are discussed and acaricide management strategies recommended.  相似文献

Rabbits treated with goat anti-rabbit thymocyte serum acquired less resistance to Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi infestation than untreated controls. This inferior resistance was manifested as higher engorged weights of ticks and higher biotic potential, undue persistence of the ticks on the hosts and poor anti-tick antibody and delayed-type hypersensitivity responses. These observations highlight the significance of host T-cells in mediating resistance of ticks.  相似文献

A study was undertaken to determine the seasonal abundance of the ticks infesting cattle owned by resource-limited farmers in the north-eastern Free State Province of South Africa. Infestations of Boophilus decoloratus Koch, 1844, Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi Neumann, 1897, Rhipicephalus follis Donitz, 1910, Rhipicephalus gertrudae Feldman-Muhsam, 1960 and Rhipicephalus warburtoni Walker & Horak, 2000, were monitored on cattle of mixed breeds at monthly intervals from May 1998 to April 1999. High tick intensity on the cattle was observed between March and June, with a peak in May to June 1998 for B. decoloratus and R. evertsi evertsi. Few ticks from the other three species were recovered from the cattle. Small peaks in November to December 1998 for R. warburtoni, and in December 1998 for R. follis and R. gertrudae were observed. Following the winter (June to August), numbers of B. decoloratus declined markedly, while those of R. evertsi evertsi and other rhipicephalids increased. These results represent the first published information on ticks of veterinary importance infesting cattle in the north-eastern part of the Free State Province.  相似文献

Indigenous goats belonging to small-scale farmers in 4 communal grazing areas in South Africa were sampled for ixodid ticks during the period September 1991 to May 1993. Three of these areas were in the North West Province (Rietgat, Madinyane and Bethany), and one in Mpumalanga Province (Geluk). No tick control was practised unless requested by the owners. Seven ixodid tick species, of which the majority were immature ticks, were collected from the goats in North West Province. Amblyomma hebraeum was the most numerous of these, followed by Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi and Rhipicephalus appendiculatus. Substantially more ticks were collected from goats at Rietgat than at the Madinyane and Bethany grazing areas. Five tick species were collected at Geluk and R. evertsi evertsi comprised more than 95 % of the total population. At Rietgat and Geluk A. hebraeum nymphs were present on goats throughout the year, while most R appendiculatus nymphs were collected during September and October 1991 and most adults during January and February 1992. At both Rietgat and Geluk most immature R. evertsi evertsi were collected from spring to late summer, while adults were present throughout the year.  相似文献

It was shown in this study that Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi males emit pheromones in the preparasitic as well as in the parasitic phases. Conspecific unengorged male and female images exhibited a high response to water-soluble volatiles collected from unengorged males. A vigorous assembly of unfed female R. evertsi evertsi occurred on filter paper discs which had been in contact with either unfed or 5- and 9-day fed males. Progressively increasing percentages of conspecific unengorged males reacted to organic soluble volatiles obtained from 5- and 9-day fed males as well as to hexane washings of intact males which had fed for 9 days. It is concluded that R. evertsi evertsi males participate not only as pheromone receptive, but also as pheromone emitting, partners in the intraspecific communication of this tick species.  相似文献

Major differences were observed in hexane, ethanol and butanol extracts of eggs obtained from Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi females in which the porose areas functioned normally (AP+ eggs) and from R. evertsi evertsi in which the porose areas were selectively destroyed by electrocautery (AP- eggs). Mass yields and UV spectra of the hexane extracts were similar for AP+ and AP- eggs. The UV spectra changed only slightly in the 294-320 nm range with respect to time and temperature. High performance liquid chromatography revealed 2 components which originate from the porose areas. Mass spectroscopy of these components indicated the presence of aliphatic and phenolic groups. The ethanol and butanol extracts showed quantitative but no qualitative differences with respect to AP+ and AP- eggs. Electrophoretic fractionation of the butanol extracts revealed the presence of proteins in the secretion of the porose areas. Apart from this information on the chemical composition of the secretion, no indication was obtained of their function during oviposition of R. evertsi evertsi.  相似文献

Knockdown and persistence efficacies of a pour-on containing Amitraz 1% and Cypermethrin 1% and a spray dip containing 12.5% Amitraz were compared. Knock-down and persistence efficacies of the Amitraz spray dip against Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) decoloratus and Amblyomma hebraeum were significantly higher for the duration of the trial than those of the pour-on. In the case of Rhipicephalus appediculatus and Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi, efficacy was significantly higher on Days 2 and 5. Resistance testing prior to the start of the trial indicated that R. (B.) decoloratus was resistant to both Cypermethrin and Amitraz, yet in the case of the spray dip excellent efficacy results were obtained. It is thought that the cattle's scruffy winter coat may have hindered the spread of the pour-on, but that the thorough wetting and especially the higher concentration of active ingredient applied via the spray dip allowed this formulation to be effective. These results show that under certain conditions a spray dip containing 12.5% Amitraz may be more effective than a pour-on containing 1% Amitraz and 1% Cypermethrin, despite apparent in vitro resistance.  相似文献

应用浸叶法,调查了浙江省五个蚕区的桑螟对氨基甲酸酯类农药抗性和抗性个体频率分布。结果表明浙江省五个蚕区的桑螟抗性水平处于三个级别;长兴桑螟抗性倍数1.3倍,属敏感;湖州市区,嘉兴秀洲,海宁等地桑螟抗性倍数分别是3.3,4.2,4.1倍,属敏感性降低;桐秀苗区抗性倍数为7.6倍,属低水平抗性,针对不同抗性水平,治理策略是:在敏感和敏感性降低地区可继续推广使用氨基甲酸酯类农药,但每年使用次数不能超过两次,每次用药量应严格控制。全年桑园治虫安排时,应选择不同类型农药轮用或混用,延缓桑螟抗性发展。低水平抗性地区应暂时停止该药使用。促使抗性下降。  相似文献

A survey to determine the incidence of parasites in cattle (n = 386) was conducted in the north eastern Free State between August 1999 and July 2000. Giemsa-stained blood smears were negative for blood parasites. A total of 94% of the cattle were sero-positive for Babesia bigemina by indirect fluorescent antibody test while 87% were sero-positive for Anaplasma by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The observation of negative blood smears but high incidence of positive serological results for Anaplasma and Babesia for the same group of cattle indicates that this area is endemic for these diseases but with a stable disease situation. All the animals were sero-negative for B. bovis and this is probably because the tick vector (Boophilus microplus) which transmits the disease is not present in the Free State Province. Two tick species belonging to the family ixodidae were found on cattle, namely Boophilus decoloratus and Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi. In the present study significant differences in seasonal burdens of B. decoloratus occurred, with the highest infestations recorded from February to June. The presence of R. evertsi evertsi throughout the year without any or with small fluctuations in winter months was observed, with a peak from February to May.  相似文献

The tick burdens of 115 Merino sheep, slaughtered over a period of 15 consecutive months on a farm in the north-eastern Orange Free State, were determined. A total of 7 ixodid and 1 argasid tick species were recovered and the seasonal abundances of Boophilus decoloratus, Hyalomma marginatum rufipes, Margaropus winthemi and Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi were determined. One hundred and forty-nine Merino sheep were slaughtered over periods varying from 10 to 25 months on 3 farms in Eastern Province Thornveld in the eastern Cape Province and their tick burdens determined. Fourteen ixodid tick species were recovered from these animals and the seasonal abundances of Amblyomma marmoreum, B. decoloratus, Haemaphysalis silacea, R. evertsi evertsi and Rhipicephalus nitens were ascertained. On a farm in Valley Bushveld in the eastern Cape Province, 2 Dorper sheep were slaughtered each month for a period of 24 consecutive months. These 48 sheep harboured 10 ixodid tick species and the seasonal abundances of A. marmoreum, H. silacea, Rhipicephalus appendiculatus and Rhipicephalus glabroscutatum were determined. A total of 17 ixodid tick species, of which 12 had reached the adult stage, where recovered from the sheep on the 5 farms.  相似文献

Ixodid ticks were collected during the period September 1991 to August 1993 from cattle belonging to small-scale farmers utilising 4 communal grazing areas. Three of these were in North West Province and 1 in Mpumalanga province, South Africa. Ten tick species were collected in North West Province and 7 in Mpumalanga. The adults of Amblyomma hebraeum, Rhipicephalus appendiculatus and Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi were most numerous in North West Province, while in Mpumalanga Boophilus decoloratus comprised more than 75% of the total population. Amblyomma hebraeum was present on all grazing areas, and heavy infestations of adults occurred during the period October to May on 1 of these. Few B. decoloratus were collected in North West Province, chiefly because the sampling method was inadequate, and most of these were present during early summer (October to December) and late summer and autumn (March to May). The initially low population of B. decoloratus in Mpumalanga increased substantially towards the conclusion of the survey, probably because of the cessation of dipping. Boophilus microplus was present in small numbers on 2 grazing areas in the North West Province. Adult Hyalomma marginatum rufipes reached peak numbers from December to February and Hyalomma truncatum from February to April in the North West Province. Only H. marginatum rufipes was collected in Mpumalanga. Rhipicephalus appendiculatus was present on all the grazing areas, with most adults present from December to April. Most adult Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi were collected from September to April and Rhipicephalus simus was present during the period October-April.  相似文献

Four to 10 Dorper sheep on each of 12 farms in the Cape Province and 3 farms in the Orange Free State were examined for adult ixodid ticks at approximately 2- to 4-weekly intervals over periods varying from 4 to 18 months, commencing during January, February or April 1989. The farms in the Cape Province were located in the north-west, south-west and south of the province. Those in the Orange Free State were situated in the north-east and in the south. The sheep in the Cape Province harboured 10 species of ixodid ticks and the seasonal abundances of Ixodes rubicundus, Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi, Rhipicephalus gertrudae and Hyalomma truncatum were determined. The animals in the Orange Free State were infested with 7 tick species and the seasonal abundances of I. rubicundus, R. evertsi and Hyalomma marginatum rufipes were determined.  相似文献

The secondary antibody response to sheep red blood cells and bovine serum albumin (BSA) was measured in rabbits infested with adult Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi. The response was reduced (particularly for BSA) but still displayed anamnestic characteristics. Resistance against ixodid ticks associated with antibodies detected by gel diffusion and enzyme linked immunosorbent assay techniques early in the primary challenge was acquired by the immunized hosts only. This suggests that a non-specifically activated immune system enables hosts to develop rapid resistance against tick parasitism.  相似文献

A study was conducted to identify and determine burdens of ticks infesting Borana cattle in the Borana Province of Ethiopia. Rhipicephalus pulchellus, Rhipicephalus pravus, Rhipicephalus muhsamae, Rhipicephalus praetextatus, Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi, Amblyomma gemma, Amblyomma variegatum, Amblyomma cohaerens, Amblyomma lepidum, Hyalomma truncatum, Hyalomma marginatum rufipes and Boophilus decoloratus were identified on the cattle. Their burdens ranged from 658-1,554 with a mean of 1,205 ticks per animal. Out of the total 6,025 ticks collected, about 82% were R. pulchellus, followed by R. pravus (about 8%) and A. gemma (5%). The other nine species of ticks accounted for only 5% of the total burdens. It is suggested that a strategic tick control method, aimed mainly at reducing the R. pulchellus burdens, with the objective of allowing a reasonable number of ticks to remain on cattle for the maintenance of endemic stability to tick-borne diseases be instituted.  相似文献

Ticks were collected over a period of 13 months, at approximately fortnightly intervals, from 6 Africaner oxen kept on the farm Nylsvley in the Naboomspruit District. The 8 species of Ixodidae collected were, in order of abundance, Rhipicephalus appendiculatus, R. evertsi evertsi, Hyalomma marginatum rufipes, H. truncatum, Amblyomma hebraeum, R. simus, Boophilus decoloratus and Ixodes cavipalpus. The relative abundance of adult ticks of these species, their predilection feeding sites and seasonal fluctuations in numbers are discussed.  相似文献

Host resistance, accompanied by demonstrable anti-tick antibodies, developed in groups of rabbits that were infested repeatedly with different numbers of Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi larvae. This resistance was associated with a drastic reduction in the number of ticks that attached but not in the ability to feed and moult by immatures already established on the hosts. Furthermore, resistance reduced to below 50% the proportion of nymphs which emerged from the larvae applied to the three host groups. Nymphs weighing 5–9.9 and 15–19.9 mg moulted to give mainly males or females respectively. The proportion of males and females which moulted from the remaining weight categories was variable. Anti-tick antibodies were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay as early as 7 days after primary infestation in all hosts. The titres plateaued after the second challenge and declined drastically during the fifth infestation. No appreciable differences were observed in the antibody responses stimulated by different challenge regimens.  相似文献

Sheep originating from an heartwater-free area were immunized by the infection and treatment method, using long-acting oxytetracycline. The animals were then exposed, together with control sheep to natural infection in an enzootic area. Tick counts were made to monitor the infestation and establish a correlation between infestation by certain tick species, in particular Amblyomma variegatum, and the occurrence of cowdriosis. In some cases of death associated with ehrlichiosis and anaplasmosis in the group immunized against cowdriosis, groups of Cowdria ruminantium were found in smears of the cerebral cortex, which leaves question marks as to the real nature of immunity to cowdriosis. Furthermore, these losses show the necessity of an integrated approach to the control of diseases of livestock in a given area. The presence of Rhipicephalus e. evertsi, formerly absent from this area, was significant in this respect.  相似文献

Simultaneous infestation of 3-6 month-old Black-head sheep with 15 South African wild strains of Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi males and females as well as a strain from Rwanda clearly showed that all strains are capable of inducing paralysis. Assessment of the infestation-rate of engorging female ticks during the period that their mass ranged between 15 and 21 mg/kg sheep body mass indicated that toxicity is quantitatively identical and exhibits no intraspecific gradations. The period between the beginning of infestation to the manifestation of the first clinical symptoms is, however, strain dependent: 4 days for ticks from Warmbaths, and at least 5 days for all other strains.  相似文献
