Many upland areas of the British Isles have seen declines in the area and condition of heather (Calluna vulgaris)-dominated heathland vegetation. To reverse this decline, management regimes must be designed to rehabilitate areas that have seen this decline. As most of this heathland vegetation is primarily managed by grazing, such management has to determine what stocking levels can maintain the vegetation in a desired state. This paper describes how to reverse this decline through suitable grazing management.A degraded ‘wet-heath’ system, previously grazed at 2.1 sheep ha−1, was subject to a range of grazing treatments over a 5-year period. Treatments varied in intensity (0-1.4 sheep ha−1) and timing (summer only, winter only, or year round) of grazing. Grazing levels were maintained at 2.1 sheep ha−1 outside the fenced areas. Vegetation composition remained stable outside the fenced treatments. All the fenced treatments showed an increase in the relative frequency of the evergreen Calluna vulgaris, with the greatest increase being in the ungrazed treatment, and the least in the year round 1.4 sheep ha−1 treatment. This increase was in line with a reduction in heather utilisation to relatively low and sustainable levels. Other species that benefited from reduced grazing included Carex nigra, Deschampsia flexuosa and to a lesser extent Galium saxatile and Erica tetralix, whereas a range of moss species including Hypnum jutlandicum and Rhytidiadelphus loreus were more frequent at higher grazing levels. Though the recovery of heather was similar in the two seasonally grazed treatments, the vegetation showed different overall trajectories. Winter only grazed allowed a substantial increase in the cover of the deciduous Molinia caerulea, whereas this species was kept in check by summer only grazing. A stocking level of between 0.7 and 1.4 sheep ha−1 appears to be appropriate to maintain and even enhance the cover of heather on degraded wet heath. Complete removal is not necessary. Grazing restricted to the winter period is inappropriate in areas where M. caerulea occurs. Setting appropriate stocking levels to maintain the condition of the vegetation must take into account site conditions, especially the presence of species that can affect the utilisation of heather.  相似文献

Many areas of heathland in Europe have seen a decline in the area and condition of Calluna vulgaris (heather)-dominated vegetation, with subsequent declines in the associated faunal interest. Grazing, alongside burning, is still the predominant means of managing heathland vegetation, and, therefore, it is by manipulating this management that cost-effective improvements in vegetation condition can be made. This paper investigates the suitability of different grazing treatments for rehabilitating degraded ‘dry heath’. Treatments varied in the intensity (0-1.9 sheep ha−1 year−1) and timing (summer vs. winter) of sheep grazing. These treatments were compared with the behaviour of vegetation outside the fenced area kept under the previous management (open access all year round). As rabbits were common on the site, fences were erected to prevent access to the sheep grazed plots. Vegetation composition remained stable outside the fenced area, whilst all the fenced treatments showed a decrease in heather utilisation and an increase in the relative frequency of heather over the 5 years of the experiment. The increase was in proportion to the reduction in stocking rate, with only slow increases in relative frequency observed in the high grazing treatments (winter and summer). Other species that benefited from reducing grazing included Empetrum nigrum and Vaccinium myrtillus, whilst declines were observed for Agrostis capillaris and total monocotyledonous species. Only small overall differences were observed between the winter low, summer low and no sheep grazing treatments. However, a difference in response was present between the sheep exclosures and the sheep+rabbit exclosures, indicating that rabbits were having a noticeable effect on heather recovery at this site. On this degraded ‘dry heath’ system, imposing a reduction in stocking density improved the condition of the dwarf shrubs present and reduced the grass component of the vegetation. There was little effect of the timing of grazing, such that a reduction in sheep numbers to 0.8/0.9 sheep ha−1 year−1, to give utilisation levels of below 20%, can achieve the desired result of improving vegetation condition whilst still achieving some economic return from grazing. However, the wide range of ‘sustainable’ stocking densities for different heathland systems highlights the need to base effective management on measured utilisation rather than on stock numbers.  相似文献

Upland heather moors are high priority biotopes for conservation in Britain, but are under threat from a number of sources. One such threat is a change from a vegetation dominated by dwarf shrubs, mainly Calluna vulgaris, to a grassland dominated by Molinia caerulea. Restoration of a dwarf shrub community has proved problematic with studies showing that herbicide use may be necessary to control Molinia. Previously the non-selective herbicide, glyphosate, has been recommended, but this herbicide may damage Calluna and other moorland species severely. Here, we tested a range of selective herbicides (graminicides) for use in an herbicide-based conservation strategy under field conditions. Two selective herbicides, propaquizafop and quizalofop-ethyl, gave a short-term check to Molinia and another, cycloxydim, provided a reduction for at least 1 year, but this effect disappeared after 3 years. Damage to Calluna was less than that caused by glyphosate, and the selective herbicides had little effect on other moorland species present. Our findings suggest that selective herbicides have a potential role in reducing Molinia during moorland restoration, although follow-up applications, and appropriate moorland management, will also be needed.  相似文献

Limited information is available about the impact of grazing on soil and plant nutrient contents in Mediterranean deciduous oak forests grazed by both livestock and wild life. Thus, the main objective of this study was to investigate the effect of wild boar and small ruminants grazing in a coppice oak forest in N Greece. Eight even‐aged stands of similar canopy cover and site quality were selected: four stands with long‐time grazing mainly by wild boar and four stands with long‐time grazing by sheep and goats. A plot of 150 m2 in each of the stands was fenced in order to be protected from grazing. A similarly sized plot open to grazing was assigned next to the fenced plot. Species composition was recorded in fenced and grazed plots. Soil samples and individual plants of the dominant palatable grass species Dactylis glomerata and Brachypodium sylvaticum were collected in every fenced and grazed plot. These samples were analysed for contents of nutrients. The results indicated that grazing increased organic matter, C, and total N, P and Ca, while it had no effect on the plant nutrients Mg, Na, K and all micronutrients, and pH as well. Wild boar grazing had a significantly negative impact on the concentrations of Na, Fe, Zn, and Mn in the soil. Beside a decrease in K and Mn, grazing had minimal effects on the contents of plant nutrients. Conversely, wild boar grazing increased the contents of several nutrients such as N, Na, Cu and Fe in plant tissue. It seems that species composition was more affected by the topography and management than by the soil features as revealed by RDA analysis. The results of this study indicate that it is important to maintain moderate small ruminant grazing intensity for the sustainable multi‐disciplinary management of coppice oak forests. It is also important to control wild boar population in order to facilitate ecosystem process, soil preservation and forage quality.  相似文献

We reviewed European studies on the effect of reed management (harvesting, burning, mowing and grazing) on reedbed wildlife, and in addition, on the performance of re-growing reed (Phragmites australis). Our database consisted of 21 studies conducted on 10 plant species, 17 taxonomic groups of invertebrates and 11 bird species, and published between 1982 and 2006.We found that reed management modifies the structure of re-growing reed stands: reed stems were shorter and denser in managed sites than in unmanaged sites. However, harvesting does not have an impact on aboveground biomass. Plant species richness increased by 90% in managed stands in fresh water marshes, but not in saline water marshes.Overall, reed management had a significant negative impact on invertebrate community, but the duration of management was an important factor determining the magnitude of the effect. Short-term management (1-2 years) had no effect on invertebrates, whereas management for longer period significantly reduced invertebrate abundance. Reed harvesting and burning reduced abundance of passerine birds by about 60%. This was probably associated with food limitation as the numbers of butterflies, beetles and some spiders were reduced. Therefore, the optimal reed management regime to preserve number of birds and invertebrates in reedbeds could be a rotation of short-term management (1-2 years). However, the optimal interval between management applications should be established in future studies.  相似文献

The effects of light year-round cattle grazing on tall-herb fen vegetation and wetland molluscs were compared to the effects of non-intervention over a period of four years using grazing exclosures. The distribution of cattle within the area of fen was investigated by plotting the position of the herd at 3-4 day intervals throughout the year. Cattle distributed themselves randomly throughout the fen in spring, autumn and winter, but showed a more aggregated distribution in summer. Grazing reduced the biomass of Phragmites australis and increased stem densities of Glyceria maxima, resulting in a shift of dominance from Phragmites to Glyceria. Plant species-richness was also significantly higher in areas open to grazing.Grazing decreased total densities of molluscs and substantially reduced densities of the rare snail Vertigo moulinsiana. V. moulinsiana was particularly associated with areas of fen that had a high water table and high biomass of ungrazed Carex riparia. However, because of the patchy nature of the grazing, V. moulinsiana survived at reasonably high densities in patches of ungrazed vegetation within the grazing unit.  相似文献

Mycelia of cord-forming fungi show remarkable patterns of reallocation of biomass and nutrients indicating an important role of these, often extensive, organisms in the spatial translocation of energy and nutrients in forest soils. Despite the rich tradition of interaction studies between soil microarthropods and fungi, the spatial implications of these interactions, due to the potential growth responses of the fungi and to the translocation of energy and nutrients within the mycelial network, have been largely ignored. In this paper we analyse fungal growth responses in two-dimensional model systems composed of compressed soil, the cord-forming fungus Hypholoma fasciculare and three fungivorous Collembolan species. We hypothesised that (i) the highly co-ordinated nature of cord-forming fungi would lead to growth responses following collembolan grazing, and that, (ii) such changes are dependent on grazing intensity, and (iii) changes are dependent on the species grazing. Mycelial extent and hyphal cover decreased with increasing grazing density; at highest grazing density also the fractal dimension of the mycelial border decreased, indicating a less branched foraging front due to the regression of fine hyphae and the development of mycelial cords. Effects differed greatly between collembolan species although they exerted comparable grazing pressure (the smaller species were added in larger numbers according to their allometric size-metabolic rate relationships): while grazing by Folsomia candida resulted in less mycelial extension and hyphal cover, these variables were not affected when Proisotoma minuta and Hypogastrura cf. tullbergi grazed. The effects of a species mix suggested an additive effect of the component species. This shows that fungal mycelia may suffer from damage caused by few but large collembolans, affecting extension as well as coverage of the mycelium, but that fungi may compensate for the biomass loss caused by more but slightly smaller collembolans. In about 20% of the model systems H. fasciculare switched from a growth pattern with a broad contiguous foraging front and uniform growth in all directions to a pattern with fast growing sectors while other sectors stopped growth completely. The switch occurred in grazed systems exclusively; thus we interpret this observation as a fugitive response and as a strategy for quickly escaping from places where grazing pressure is experienced.  相似文献

Over 100 native herbaceous forest perennials are harvested in the United States. Management of these populations for continued survival requires information on the long-term effects of varied harvesting levels on populations of forest perennials. Allium tricoccum Ait. is a species that is harvested throughout its range for its edible bulb. We examined the recovery of A. tricoccum populations over a 5-year period following experimental harvests of different intensity to predict the number of years required to return to pre-harvest levels and to establish guidelines for sustainable harvesting. Our harvest treatments included removal of 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100% of plants within experimental plots. Treatments were repeated at three sites. Population recovery was monitored for 4 years at two sites and 7 years at one site. We found a relationship between the level of harvest and the negative impacts on populations of A. tricoccum, with limited population recovery in the 4 years following harvesting. We projected recovery times as a function of harvest level using a population projection model. Deterministic projections of recovery time ranged from 148 years for a 95% harvest to 2.5 years for a 5% harvest. Incorporating stochasticity into our projections increased the uncertainty in our estimates of recovery time. For example the recovery time from a 5% harvest ranged from 1 to 89 years (95% confidence limit). Based on our results, a 10% harvest once every 10 years would, on average, be a sustainable level of harvest for A. tricoccum in southern Appalachian forests.  相似文献

The conversion of single-species coniferous forest stands into mixed stands by promoting the natural regeneration of indigenous broadleaved tree species was studied in a forest-heathland on the Veluwe, in the central part of the Netherlands. Red deer (Cervus elaphus), roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) and wild boar (Sus scrofa) had a large impact on regeneration dynamics, as was established by comparing 20 pairs of fenced and unfenced plots (40 × 40 m) during a 10-year period. A fivefold reduction of total herbivore biomass to 500 kg per km2, resulted in a strong increase of shrub and tree sapling numbers in all vegetation types. However, height growth of the most palatable broadleaved tree species was still strongly impeded. Under the present-day grazing pressure, Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and beech (Fagus sylvatica) will become the dominant canopy species in the forests in the near future. It is argued that the most browse-sensitive woody species such as pedunculate and sessile oak (Quercus robur and Q. petraea) will successfully regenerate, only if temporal and spatial variation in browsing pressure is allowed to occur.  相似文献

Extracellular enzymes produced by heterotrophic microorganisms in the soil are responsible for the decomposition of organic compounds. Basidiomycete fungi are the primary decomposer agents in temperate wooded ecosystems and contribute extensively to extracellular enzyme activity and nutrient mineralisation within soils. Growth and development of basidiomycete mycelia is influenced by soil-dwelling invertebrate grazers with potential implications for fungal activity and ecosystem functioning. The impacts of four invertebrate taxa belonging to Isopoda, Myriapoda, Collembola and Nematoda on the production of eight hydrolytic enzymes by four saprotrophic basidiomycetes (Phanerochaete velutina, Resinicium bicolor and two strains of Hypholoma fasciculare) were compared in a factorial microcosm study. Grazing generally increased enzyme production but invertebrates had species-specific impacts on enzyme activity. The magnitude of grazing influenced enzyme activity; macrofauna (woodlice and millipedes) induced the greatest responses. Enzymatic responses varied markedly between fungi. Grazing enhanced enzyme activity in the exploitative mycelial networks of P. velutina and H. fasciculare, while the opposite effects were observed in the explorative R. bicolor networks. The impacts of soil fauna on nutrient mineralisation depend on fungal community composition. β-glucosidase, cellobiohydrolase, N-acetylglucosaminidase, acid phosphatase and phosphodiesterase activities were affected most frequently by grazing and invertebrate activity, and thus had direct consequences for carbon, nitrogen and phosphorous cycling. The results indicate that invertebrate diversity and community composition may influence the spatial distribution and activity of extracellular enzymes with direct implications for nutrient mineralisation and trunover in woodland soils.  相似文献

A long-term experiment set up by G. W. Dimbleby to test the effect of birch as a soil improver on a heather moor podzol is described. After 30 yr, an acid woodland type of vegetation developed under the birch trees with Deschampsia flexuosa and Vaccinium myrtillus locally dominant. The mean annual dry matter production of stems and branches was approximately 2.9 t ha?1. The raw humus layer removed as an experimental treatment had re-formed. Its pH, about 3.4, had remained unchanged for 15 yr. The mean extractable Ca content of the upper 3 cm horizon of the birch plots and of the control plots under heather had increased and on some of the birch plots the concentrations of exchangeable Ca were somewhat higher than those under heather. The N content of the Ol + Of, Oh and Ea horizons was higher under the birch than under heather but there was no evidence of movement of Fe out of the ironpan under the influence of birch. The profile under birch remained a fully differentiated podzol.  相似文献

The composition of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) communities found in agricultural systems has been found to be very different to that of forest. The implications of this, if any, for the restoration of indigenous forest on ex-agricultural land is poorly understood. This study investigated the effect that AMF communities isolated from ex-agricultural and forest soils have on the growth of an indigenous New Zealand tree species (Podocarpus cunninghamii). The forest AMF community was isolated from a remnant stand of P. cunninghamii forest and the ex-agricultural AMF from a retired grazing grassland. In addition, the study examined how the two AMF communities affected the competitiveness of P. cunninghamii when grown in competition with an invasive grass species (Agrostis capillaris), which is frequently dominant on ex-agricultural land in New Zealand. P. cunninghamii growth was significantly decreased by inoculation with ex-agricultural AMF compared to forest AMF. Furthermore, the forest AMF community was able to significantly increase P. cunninghamii root production when in competition with A. capillaris. The findings suggest that when attempting to restore indigenous forest on ex-agricultural land, inoculation of tree seedlings with appropriate forest AMF may improve their growth and survival.  相似文献

Mediterranean temporary pools represent unique species-rich habitats with many rare and endangered species. The Roque-Haute Natural Reserve is one of the few sites in France with Isoetes setacea Lam., a very rare Mediterranean quillwort, considered as a keystone species determining a priority habitat for the European Union. Land uses changes have favoured the invasion of the pools by several shrub and tree species (e.g., Ulmus minor, Fraxinus angustifolia subsp. oxycarpa). Clearing shrubs in an experimental area of one pool resulted in the increase of I. setacea as compared to control, combining a higher cover in previously occupied quadrats and more quadrats occupied. Litter accumulation had a negative effect on the population of Isoetes but this effect was detectable only in the cleared area. Light attenuation was shown experimentally to be detrimental to the vegetative and regenerative production of I. setacea. Clearing of the shrubs and removal of the litter led to an increase in the I. setacea populations and therefore appears to be an effective technique for restoring these plant communities invaded by shrubs. Long-term shrub control should be ensured by reintroducing sheep grazing in order to enhance the sustainable conservation of this oligotrophic habitat.  相似文献

We examine habitat use by hunting hen harriers Circus cyaneus at three study sites in Scotland to evaluate whether foraging patterns differ between sexes, sites, and stages of the breeding period. We modelled time spent hunting in focal plots as a function of habitat and nest proximity. Male hunting intensity (time spent hunting per hour of observation and km2) varied between sites and breeding periods, being lower during the nestling than the incubation period. Habitat use patterns were mostly consistent among study sites, which is important for developing species management recommendations applicable over the species’ range. Males avoided improved grassland, and selected areas of mixed heather and rough grass (with an optimum at ca. 50% heather cover). The effect of nest proximity was small. In contrast, females hunted mainly within 300-500 m of the nest, with a small additive effect of vegetation cover, areas of fragmented heather being preferred. Habitat management to benefit foraging harriers will involve creating (or maintaining) mosaics of heather/grassland around nest areas. Additionally, it might be possible to manipulate habitat to reduce conflict in areas where harrier predation on red grouse is important by segregating areas holding highest grouse densities (with high heather cover) from those favoured for harrier foraging (heather-grass mosaics). However, it would be necessary to test whether these manipulations might also influence harrier nest distribution, an effect which could negate any benefits from this strategy.  相似文献

Heathland in the New Forest, Hampshire, England, is subject to systematic controlled burning, the main intention of which is to maintain and enhance the quality of the grazing for commoners' animals. Mature heathland vegetation is richer in bird, reptile and invertebrate life than younger age classes. However, a survey has confirmed that despite a recent reduction in the area burnt annually, burning had produced an imbalance in favour of young age classes of heather Calluna vulgaris and Erica spp., and that intensive browsing after fire was severely inhibiting the regeneration of gorse Ulex europaeus. The data obtained made it possible to recommend management policies which attempted to correct the imbalance in vegetation age structure and also satisfied the requirements of the grazier.  相似文献

Species N use traits was evaluated as a mechanism whereby Bromus inermis (Bromus), an established invasive, might alter soil N supply in a Northern mixed-grass prairie. We compared soils under stands of Bromus with those from three representative native grasses of different litter C/N: Andropogon gerardii (Andropogon), Nassella viridula (Nassella) and Pascopyrum smithii (Pascopyrum); in ascending order of litter quality. Net mineralization (per g soil N) measured in year-long laboratory incubations showed no differences in comparisons of Bromus with two of the three native grasses: Andropogon and Nassella. Higher mineralization in Pascopyrum stands relative to Bromus was consistent with its higher litter quality. However, an unusually high occurrence of an N-fixing legume in Pascopyrum stands, potentially favoring high mineralization rates, confounded any conclusions regarding the effects of plant N use on N mineralization. Instead of an initial flush of net mineralization, as would be expected in laboratory incubation, we observed an initial lag phase. This lag in net N mineralization coincided with high microbial activity (respiration) that suggests strong N limitation of the microbial biomass. Further support for the importance of immobilization initially came from modeling mineralization dynamics, which was explained better when we accounted for microbial growth in our model. The absence of strong differences in net mineralization beneath these grasses suggests that differences in plant N use alone were unlikely to influence soil N mineralization through substrate quality, particularly under strong N control of the microbial biomass.  相似文献

This paper considers evidence of land degradation and its impact on livestock production systems in the communal areas of southern Zimbabwe. Various measures of rangeland degradation, using both primary and secondary production indicators, are examined. An apparent contradiction emerges between the high observed levels of soil erosion and the lack of impact on livestock production, as measured by population density trends, cattle production parameters, cumulative stocking levels and extraction rates. Farmers' observations of land degradation processes support the quantitative data. A possible resolution of the contradiction lies in an assessment of the spatial and temporal dimensions of degradation patterns; this points to the fact that current erosion is concentrated in areas that are not key grazing resources for cattle. The analysis suggests an agenda for degradation research that concentrates on evaluating the time span over which economic impacts of soil erosion are felt and assessing the spatial pattern of soil loss, with a special focus on key grazing resource patches.  相似文献

The salamander, Dicamptodon tenebrosus, is threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation associated with forest harvest activities. We used three microsatellite loci and 38 amplified fragment length polymorphisms (AFLPs) to quantify population structure and indirectly evaluate the impacts of forest harvesting on this species. We sampled two old growth sites, three second growth sites and three recently clearcut sites in British Columbia, Canada. Microsatellite allelic richness and the percentage of polymorphic AFLPs were positively correlated with the age of forest stands. Similarly, heterozygosity estimated from both marker types was positively correlated with stand age. Population subdivision (Fst) estimated among forested sites using microsatellite and AFLP markers was 0.033 and 0.095, respectively. Lower genetic variation and heterozygosity in recent clearcuts suggest that clearcut logging may be associated with local population declines. Our genetic findings are consistent with previous studies that report lower salamander densities in recently clearcut sites.  相似文献

Flowering phenology, soil seedbank and the impact of fire, weeds and grazing were investigated in two rare Acacia taxa restricted to the agricultural district north of Perth Western Australia. Acacia aprica is known from six extant populations and one extinct population. Five of the extant populations are restricted to linear road reserves with the sixth population located in a small native vegetation remnant. Acacia cochlocarpa ssp. cochlocarpa is known from a single population also situated on a road verge. Size class structure, levels of canopy death and an absence of juveniles indicated that all populations are in decline. Flowering intensity and success varied between populations and years in A. aprica and between years in A. cochlocarpa ssp. cochlocarpa. Seed bank analysis indicated that seeds were patchily distributed while experimental fires demonstrated that such events could break seed dormancy and promote germination. Both taxa have similar germination physiologies and showed increased germination after seeds were exposed to heat. Following emergence, however, competition with annual weeds had a negative impact on seedling growth and survival in both taxa. While vertebrate grazing had some influence, weeds were the major inhibitory influence on recruitment. Reduced fire frequencies since fragmentation may be responsible for population decline in both taxa but other site specific factors such as weeds and grazing may affect the establishment of seedlings following fire.  相似文献

Using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers, we examined genetic variability of the moss Thuidium cymbifolium (Thuidiaceae) sampled from three types of spruce (Picea asperata) stands: an intact stand, naturally regenerated stands after clearcut harvests, and planted stands after clearcut harvests in the Miyaluo area, western Sichuan of China. Stands of the latter two types were of various age since the last clearcut. Results showed that the population of T. cymbifolium from the intact stand displayed the highest level of genetic diversity, and populations from the planted stands exhibited significantly higher levels than the naturally regenerated stands. In planted stands, genetic variation within populations increased over time. These findings indicated that habitat destruction by forest harvesting led to the reduction in genetic variation within populations, but that given time, artificial reforestation after clearcut was effective in promoting the recovery of genetic diversity in the recolonized moss species. Therefore, lengthening the normal felling rotation of plantations should be favored to restore and conserve genetic diversity in recolonized species. In addition, thinning young plantations via selective logging may provide heterogenous microhabitats similar to those in the old stands, and thereby facilitate the development of bryophyte communities and the increase of genetic variation of the recolonized mosses.  相似文献
