The objective of this study was the valorization of Spanish Artemisia absinthium populations from Teruel (Aragón) and Sierra Nevada (Granada). These populations were experimentally cultivated in the field and under controlled conditions. Three major components were isolated from a two year-old population obtained from the Teruel population cultivated in Ejea-Zaragoza in 2003, and identified by NMR experiments as the sequiterpene lactone hydroxypelenolide (I) and the flavones artemetin (II) and casticin (III). The I-III content of the plant extracts was analyzed by HPLC-DAD. The insect antifeedant properties of plant extracts from different years and crops were tested against Spodoptera littoralis, Myzus persicae and Rhopalosiphum padi. Additionally we studied their antioxidant, phytotoxic and antiparasitic effects.  相似文献

γ-Oryzanol (steryl ferulates; SF) has been shown to be a major bioactive compound in rice. To determine the content of individual γ-oryzanols in brown rice by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), purification of individual SF for use as an external standard is required. Four main SF were isolated from a commercial γ-oryzanol mixture and identified as cycloartenyl ferulate (1), 24-methylenecycloartanyl ferulate (2), campesteryl ferulate (3), and sitosteryl ferulate (4) based on mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic data. The SF contents between conventional and organic brown rice were qualitatively determined by HPLC using SF isolated from a commercial γ-oryzanol mixture as the external standard. The total γ-oryzanol content (mg/100 g) in organic brown rice (65.6 ± 2.7) was slightly higher (P < 0.05) than that found in conventional brown rice (60.2 ± 1.8). The content (mg/100 g) of 1 (21.2 ± 0.9) and 4 (9.8 ± 0.4) in organic brown rice was higher (P < 0.05) than that observed in conventional brown rice (1, 18.2 ± 1.1; 4, 8.5 ± 0.3). However, the content of 2 and 3 in the conventional and organic brown rice samples did not differ significantly. These results indicate that the cultivation methods do significantly alter the γ-oryzanol content for conventional and organic brown rice.  相似文献

Near-infrared reflectance (NIR) spectroscopy combined with chemometrics was used to quantify fructan concentration in samples from seven grass species. Savitzky–Golay first derivative with filter width 7 and polynomial order 2 with mean centering was applied as a spectral pre-treatment method to remove unimportant baseline signals. In order to model the NIR spectroscopy data the partial least squares regression (PLSR) approach was used on the full spectra. Variable selection based on PLSR by jack-knifing within a cross-model validation (CMV) framework was applied in order to remove non-relevant spectral regions. PLSR was also used to model fructan concentrations from an augmented matrix [X|G], where X is spectra and G is correlation matrix of band specific information and X, in order to integrate the chemical band information in regression models. The present analysis showed that rapid quantification of fructans by NIR spectroscopy is possible and that jack-knifing PLSR within a CMV framework is an effective way to eliminate the wavelengths of no interest. Jack-knifing PLSR did not improve the predictive ability because the root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) increased (1.37) compared to the full model (1.26). This was possibly due to signals from carbohydrates, which could act as cofactor in the prediction of fructans. However, jack-knifing PLSR within a CMV framework simplified the interpretation of the regression model with r2 = 0.90 and RMSEP = 1.37.  相似文献

Background

The gypsovag shrub Cistus clusii is locally dominant in semi-arid gypsum plant communities of North-Eastern Spain. This species commonly grows in species-poor patches even though it has nurse potential, suggesting interference on neighbouring species. Other Cistus species exert a chemically mediated interference on plant communities, suggesting that it might be a common phenomenon in this genus. This study aimed investigating whether C. clusii exerts chemically mediated interference on neighbouring species in gypsum plant communities. We tested in a greenhouse whether aqueous extracts from C. clusii leaves (L), roots (R) and a mixture of both (RL) affected germination, seedling survival, and growth of nine native species of gypsum communities, including C. clusii itself. We further assessed in the field richness and abundance of plants under the canopy of C. clusii compared to Gypsophila struthium (shrub with a similar architecture having a nurse role) and in open patches. Finally, we specifically assessed in the field the influence of C. clusii on the presence of the species tested in the greenhouse experiment.

Results

Aqueous extracts from C. clusii (R and RL) negatively affected either germination or survival in four of nine species. In the field, richness and abundance of plants were lower under the canopy of C. clusii than under G. struthium, but higher than in open patches. Specifically, five of nine species were less frequent than expected under the canopy of C. clusii.

Conclusions

Cistus clusii shows species-specific interference with neighbouring species in the community, which may be at least partially attributable to its phytotoxic activity. To our knowledge, this is the first report of species-specific interference by C. clusii.

A chalcone compound Isosalipurposide 1 was qualitatively isolated from Acacia cyanophylla yellow flowers. The dyeing of wool fabrics with this chalcone compound as a natural dye has been studied. The effect of dye bath pH and dyeing temperature were investigated. The obtained shades were bright with generally a good fastness. A post-mordanting method was used in the dyeing of wool with this chalcone dye. It was found that, generally, mordanting improved light fastness especially in the case of zinc sulphate.  相似文献

Bacterial wilt of potatoes, which used to be a widespread disease in tropics and subtropics, has become a threat to potato production in temperate region. The diploid species Solanum commersonii has several desirable characteristics including cold tolerance and resistance to several diseases. Selected somatic hybrids between S. tuberosum dihaploid and bacterial-wilt-resistant S. commersonii clones were cross pollinated with S. tuberosum cultivars for further selection of bacterial wilt resistance. The chromosome numbers of the fusion parents were confirmed as 24, and the three fusion hybrids crossed were all tetraploids. The chromosome number of 11 backcross 1 progenies (BC1) was 48 and that of the other six was close to the tetraploid number. Backcross 2 progenies (BC2) were obtained from only three of the 44 BC1 clones crossed. The S. commersonii parent clone, LZ3.2, was the most resistant to bacterial wilt among wild species clones tested. The first sexual progenies segregated for resistance, with one clone highly susceptible and four clones highly resistant. Three highly resistant BC1 clones, CT02-4, CT08-4, and CT10b-4, were backcrossed to cultivars. Two cross combinations produced mostly susceptible BC2 progenies; however seven clones were resistant or highly resistant for both race 1 and race 3. The highly resistant three clones, CT204-3, CT206-9 and CT206-10, were selected for the further testing as cultivars or breeding materials.  相似文献

A new charring agent, a derivative of cyanuric chloride, mono-substituted, dimethyl (4,6-dichloro-1,3,5-triazin-2-yloxy)methylphosphonate (CN), was synthesized in good yield and characterized. Its flame retardant and thermogravimetric properties were compared to those of the di-substituted compound, tetramethyl (6-chloro-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diyl)bis(oxy)bis (methylene)diphosphonate (CN-1), which was prepared in previous work. All untreated fabric showed limiting oxygen index (LOI) values of about 18 vol% oxygen in nitrogen. Fabrics treated with CN at 5?C21 wt% add-ons had high LOI values of 30?C40 vol%, while fabrics treated with CN-1 at 5?C19 wt% add-ons had low to high LOI value of 20?C36 vol%. In 45° angle flammability tests, all treated fabrics with CN and CN-1 were passed and some fabrics were not igniting at all. Thermal degradation revealed that onset of degradation and the char yield of CN compound is higher than that of CN-1. Treated fabric with CN, 21 wt% add-on, had an onset of degradation of 240 °C, while fabric treated with CN-1, 19 wt% add-on displayed an onset of degradation of 230 °C. Despite the differences in onset temperature, the two samples provided almost the same char yield at 600 °C, 35 and 36 %. With Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), samples of treated/unburned and treated/burned of CN and CN-1 showed the same functional groups and revealed the disappearance of triazine group and P-O-methyl after burning. Additionally, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that both CN and CN-1 acted as flame retardants by the same mechanism and characterized the surface morphology of the flame retardant treated twill fabrics.  相似文献

N4-(5-methyl-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl)thiazole-2,4-diamine derivatives have been synthesized by the reaction of 2-amino-5-methyl-1,3,4-thiadiazole and chloroaecetylchloride with suitable solvent, then cyclized with thiourea at reflux temperature in methanol to yield N4-(5-methyl-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl)thiazole-2,4-diamine which was diazotized and coupled with various naphthalene acid couplers to give new series of acid dyes (AD1-AD13). All the compounds were characterized by their percentage yield, melting point, elemental analysis, UV spectra, IR spectra, and NMR spectra and dyeing performance on nylon fabric has been assessed.  相似文献

The synthesis of two new phthalocyanine precursors 4-(3-(piperidin-1-yl)phenoxy) with mono (2) and trichloro (3) substituents were carried out in this work. Cyclotetramerization of these precursors with zinc acetate gave novel tetrakis-4-(3-(piperidin-1-yl)phenoxy) with tetra (4) and dodecachloro (5) substituted zinc phthalocyanines. The synthesized new compounds were characterized using FT-IR, 1H NMR, electronic absorption spectroscopy, mass spectra and elemental analysis. The aggregation behavior of zinc phthalocyanines 4 and 5 was investigated in different concentrations of dichloromethane (DCM). Zinc phthalocyanines 4 and 5 showed good solubility in different organic solvents such as DCM, CHCl3, THF, benzene and toluene. Further, the aggregation behavior of zinc phthalocyanines 4 and 5 was studied before and after the addition of Triton X100. Further, the fluorescence quantum yields of zinc phthalocyanines 4 and 5 were calculated in the presence and absence of Triton X100.  相似文献

A mixture of highly glycosilated triterpenoid saponins (CS5) isolated from the corm of Crocus sativus or saffron showed cytotoxic activity against HeLa tumoral cells. The main reverse phase HPLC fraction of this mixture (CS5-1) contains two new oleanane-type saponins, denominated Azafrine 1 (1) and Azafrine 2 (2). The bidesmosidic saponins were respectively characterized as (1) 3-O-β-d-glucopyranosiduronic acid echinocystic acid 28-O-β-D-galactopyranosyl-(1 → 2)-α-l-arabinopyranosyl-(1 → 2)-[β-d-xylopyranosyl-(1 → 4)]-α-d-rhamnopyranosyl-(1 → 2)-[4-O-di-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-3,16-dihydroxy-10-oxo-hexadecanoyl]-α-D-fucopyranoside and (2) 3-O-β-D-galactopyranosiduronic acid echinocystic acid 28-O-β-D-galactopyranosyl-(1 → 2)-α-L-arabinopyranosyl-(1 → 2)-[β-D-xylopyranosyl-(1 → 4)]-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1 → 2)-[4-O-di-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-3,16-dihydroxy-10-oxo-hexadecanoyl]-β-D-fucopyranoside. The surfactant properties of saponins, probably involved in the cytotoxic activity of CS5 and their exclusive localization in the external part or the corm, indicate their possible role as phytoprotectans. The similarity of their structural compositions to that of other triterpenoid saponins which are of special use in the pharmaceutical industry suggest a new application for C. sativus crops through the exploitation of corm for saponin extraction.  相似文献

This paper describes the synthesis of novel thermally stable and organo-soluble poly(ether-imide)s (PEIs) by polycondensation reaction of a new synthesized diamine with different dianhydrides. Bis [4-(4-amino phenoxy)-2,5-dimethyl phenyl] paratolyl methane (6) as a new compound containing ether groups and bulky moiety of triphenyl methane was successfully prepared by a three step reaction. First, the diol compound (3) was prepared by a solvent free reaction of 2,5-dimethylphenol (1) with 4-methylbenzaldehyde (2). Then, the diol (3) was converted to dinitro (5) by reaction with 4-fluoronitrobenzene. Finally, dinitro (5) was reducted through the reaction with Pd/C 10 %. The structure of diamine (6) and resulting poly(ether-imide)s (8a-d) confirmed by 1HNMR, FTIR spectroscopy and elemental analysis (CHN). Also the properties of poly(ether-imide)s (8a-d) were investigated by mean of thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), differantial thermal gravimetric (DTG), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), solubility tests and inherent viscosity. The resulted polymers show excellent thermal stability, good solubility in aprotic polar solvent and inherent viscosities between 0.37-0.50 dl/g.  相似文献

Background

Root-knot nematodes (RKN) are major pest of olive tree (Olea europaea ssp. europaea), especially in nurseries and high-density orchards. Soil samples were collected from main olive growing areas of Morocco, to characterize Meloidogyne species and to discuss the contribution of biotic and abiotic factors in their spatial distribution.

Results

RKN were found in 159 soil samples out of 305 from nurseries (52.1% occurrence) and in 11 out of 49 soil samples from orchards (23.2% occurrence). Biochemical and molecular characterisation (PAGE esterase and SCAR) revealed the dominance of M. javanica both in nurseries and orchards with minor presence of M. incognita only in nurseries, and M. arenaria in only one nursery. RKN were distributed on aggregated basis. Frequent presence of M. javanica in orchards might have come from nurseries. In contrast, the detection of M. incognita in nurseries alone suggests that this species could not reproduce in orchards because of either the competition with other plant-parasitic nematodes or unfit local habitats. The impact of environmental variables (climate, habitat origin and physicochemical characteristics of the substrates) on the distribution of Meloidogyne species is also discussed.

Conclusion

Olive nurseries in Morocco are not able to guarantee the safety of rooted plants. As a result, olive production systems are exposed to strong RKN invasion risks. Consequently, the use of healthy substrates in nurseries may prevent plant-parasitic nematode induction in orchards.

Background

Pollen tube formation and growth are crucial steps that lead to seed production. Despite the importance of pollen tube growth, the molecular mechanisms implicated in its spatial and temporal control are not fully known. In this study, we found an uclacyanin gene, OsUCL8, that regulates pollen intine deposition and pollen tube growth.

Findings

The overexpression of OsUCL8 led to a striking irregularity in pollen tube growth and pollination and thus affected the seed setting rate in rice; many pollen tubes appeared to lose the ability to grow directly into the style. Conversely, plants with OsUCL8 knocked out and plants overexpressing miR408, a negative regulator of OsUCL8, had vigorous pollens with a higher germination rate. We further demonstrated that OsUCL8 mainly affects pollen intine formation. The addition of Vitamin B1 (VB1) significantly contributed to the germination of OXUCL8 pollen grains, suggesting that OsUCL8 could be associated with VB1 production. Using a yeast two-hybrid system, we revealed that OsUCL8 interacts with the protein OsPKIWI, a homolog of the Arabidopsis FNRL protein. We thus hypothesized that OsUCL8 might regulate the production of VB components by interacting with OsPKIWI. This study revealed a novel molecular mechanism of pollen tube growth regulation.

Conclusions

The rice plantacyanin family member OsUCL8 plays an important role in pollen tube formation and growth and, in turn, regulates fertility and the seed setting rate.

Background

The drivers of species co-existence in local communities are especially enigmatic for assemblages of morphologically cryptic species. Here we characterize the colonization dynamics and abundance of nine species of Caenorhabditis nematodes in neotropical French Guiana, the most speciose known assemblage of this genus, with resource use overlap and notoriously similar external morphology despite deep genomic divergence.

Methods

To characterize the dynamics and specificity of colonization and exploitation of ephemeral resource patches, we conducted manipulative field experiments and the largest sampling effort to date for Caenorhabditis outside of Europe. This effort provides the first in-depth quantitative analysis of substrate specificity for Caenorhabditis in natural, unperturbed habitats.

Results

We amassed a total of 626 strain isolates from nine species of Caenorhabditis among 2865 substrate samples. With the two new species described here (C. astrocarya and C. dolens), we estimate that our sampling procedures will discover few additional species of these microbivorous animals in this tropical rainforest system. We demonstrate experimentally that the two most prevalent species (C. nouraguensis and C. tropicalis) rapidly colonize fresh resource patches, whereas at least one rarer species shows specialist micro-habitat fidelity.

Conclusion

Despite the potential to colonize rapidly, these ephemeral patchy resources of rotting fruits and flowers are likely to often remain uncolonized by Caenorhabditis prior to their complete decay, implying dispersal-limited resource exploitation. We hypothesize that a combination of rapid colonization, high ephemerality of resource patches, and species heterogeneity in degree of specialization on micro-habitats and life histories enables a dynamic co-existence of so many morphologically cryptic species of Caenorhabditis.

Background

Interspecific hybridisation is common between many plant species and causes rapid changes in a variety of plant characters. This may pose problems for herbivores because changes in recognition characters may be poorly correlated with changes in quality characters. Many studies have examined different systems of hybrids and herbivores in attempts to understand the role of hybridisation in the evolution of plant resistance. The results from different systems are variable. Studies of hybrids between Salix caprea (L., Salicaceae) and S. repens show that they are intermediate between the two parental species in most resistence characters. However, a plants herbivore resistence depends also on its biotic and abiotic environment. Important biotic factors that may influence plant growth and plant chemistry include the interactions between different herbivores that occur through their exploitation of common host plants. Although the effects on plants of previous herbivory are likely to be strongly affected by environmental conditions, they are also species-specific. Damage may therefore have different effects on hybrids than on their parental species, and this could influence the performance of herbivores on pure and hybrid species of plants. To evaluate the effects of hybridisation on insect performance, the development and survival rates of Phratora vitellinae (L. 1758, Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) larvae on pure S. repens, pure S. caprea and Fl hybrids of the two species was monitored. Further, to examine the effect of herbivorous mammals on the performance of the larvae, plants were damaged to simulate winter foraging by voles or spring leaf stripping by moose.

Results

The results show that development rates were highest on S. repens and equally low on S. caprea and the Fl hybrid. In addition, development of the plants treated to simulate mammalian herbivore damage was slower than that of corresponding controls.

Conclusions

The results of this experiment suggest that P. vitellinae has a higher development rate, and thus probably higher performance, on species with high concentrations of phenolic glucosides. Therefore, it would be of adaptive benefit for P. vitellinae females to have an ovipositional preference for S. repens, compared to S. caprea and intermediate preference for Fl hybrids. The faster development observed on S. repens supports the hypothesis that P. vitellinae obtains additional adaptive benefits from phenolic glucosides beyond protection against predators. Therefore, it is important to consider further factors, such as damage caused by other herbivores, when studying this hybrid complex.

Black dot is an important disease of potato that affects all plant parts. The causal agent,Colletotrichum coccodes, is commonly found on potato tubers used for seed. Our objective was to determine thein vitro sensitivity ofC. coccodes to the fungicides maneb, thiabendazole, imazalil and CGA 173506, a phenylpyrrole. These fungicides are currently used, or are being tested for use, as potato seed treatments in the United States. All four fungicides reduced radial growth, sclerotial germination and spore germination ofC. coccodes at 10 μg/ml and higher. The fungicide concentrations that inhibited radial growth by 50% were 2 μg/ml, 5 μg/ml, 35 μg/ml, and 40 μg/ml for imazalil, CGA 173506, maneb and thiabendazole, respectively. TBZ was less inhibitory than the other three fungicides and stimulated sclerotial productionin vitro. Isolates ofC. coccodes differed in their sensitivity to maneb, thiabendazole and imazalil in radial growth, but not spore and sclerotial germination, assays. On CGA 173506, radial growth of fourC. coccodes isolates was inhibited, but these isolates produced sectors which grew normally. Germination of most sclerotia from these isolates was inhibited, but some germinated and produced normal colonies in the presence of CGA 173506. OneC. coccodes isolate was resistant to this fungicide in all assays.  相似文献

Currently, increasing pollutants in the environment lead to an increase in the use of plant oil based biolubricants. These products could lead to a significant reduction in environmental pollution and thus contribute to the discovery of a replacement for petroleum-based lubricants. Plant oils are advantageous because they are rapidly biodegradable, renewable, excellent lubricants and inexpensive to produce. However, these oils show poor stability to oxidation and unfavorable properties at low temperatures. Thus, this work outlines modifications in the epoxidation, oxirane ring opening, esterification and acylation reactions used to produce oleic acid based triester derivatives. These products have improved physicochemical and tribological properties that make them good biolubricant base stock candidates. Octyl 9-(lauroyloxy)-10-(behenoxy)octadecanoate 22 has the lowest pour point (−45 °C) while octyl 9-(lauroyloxy)-10-(octyloxy)octadecanoate 16 has the highest onset temperature. Based on the results, an increase in mid chain substituent length improves the pour point and anti-wear properties but conversely lowers the onset temperature.  相似文献

The effect of temperature and photoperiod on the expression of resistance against Phytophthora infestans in five potato cultivars with and without resistance (R) genes was investigated. Four experiments were carried out under controlled conditions in growth chambers. Two cultivars (393295.236 and 391046.22) without known R genes from the International Potato Center (CIP) in Lima, Peru, two Mexican cultivars with major R genes (Tollocan and Malinche), and a susceptible cultivar (Atlantic) were used in this study. Plants were grown for 32 days in growth chambers at two temperatures (16 and 24 C) and two photoperiods (12 and 16 h day length), then inoculated with a compatible isolate of P. infestans and incubated in a mist chamber at 18 C. The inoculation efficiency, the percentage of lesions that did not grow beyond the inoculation spot, the sporangia density, and the AUDPC were recorded. The percentage of arrested lesions decreased with temperature in the two most resistant cultivars (393295.236 and Malinche), and the AUDPC was lower at 16 than at 24 C in four of the five cultivars. The inoculation efficiency and the sporangia density were not affected by change in temperature. Sporangia density increased at 16 h photoperiod; however, the final infected leaf area was not affected. Our results demonstrate that the expression of horizontal and vertical resistance was affected by temperature; however, the relative resistance ranking among cultivars was the same in the four experiments with different temperatures and photoperiods. It is assumed that the resistance in the Mexican cultivars may be conferred by minor resistance genes and by the residual effect of defeated R genes. These results emphasize the difficulty in differentiating between horizontal and vertical resistance.  相似文献
