Prekallikrein deficiency in a family of Belgian horses   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A 7-year-old Belgian stallion hemorrhaged excessively after castration; the hemostatic mechanism was investigated. The horse had normal one-stage prothrombin time and markedly prolonged activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT). Results of intrinsic coagulation factor assays were all normal with the exception of prekallikrein activity, which was markedly reduced (less than 1% activity; value for control population, 63 to 150%). Two of this horse's full siblings, a brother and sister, had markedly prolonged APTT and low prekallikrein values (2.5% and less than 1%, respectively). The addition of plasma from a normal equine plasma pool corrected the prolonged APTT in the 3 Belgian sibling with low prekallikrein activity. Prekallikrein activity in 10 other closely related Belgian horses ranged between 12.5 and 64% (mean, 29.3%), compared with 63 to 150% (mean, 91%) in 10 mixed-breed horses. In the 3 Belgian siblings with low prekallikrein activity, the APTT approached normal after prolonged incubation (15 minutes) with the contact activator and in response to addition of an ellagic acid activator. The 3 Belgian siblings with low prekallikrein activity may be homozygous for prekallikrein deficiency, whereas the other close relatives may be heterozygous for the genetic defect.  相似文献

Prekallikrein deficiency in a dog   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A 15-year-old male dog with chronic hematuria was found to have prolonged activated partial thromboplastin time. Results of plasma coagulation assays indicated a deficiency of prekallikrein, a plasma protein that modulates the rate of activation of factors XI and XII in the intrinsic clotting system. Patients with prekallikrein deficiency rarely have manifestations of hemorrhage. The hematuria was the result of a renal transitional cell carcinoma.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To describe surgical arthrodesis of the scapulohumeral joint and to evaluate its efficacy in reducing morbidity associated with severe shoulder dysfunction in miniature horses. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. ANIMALS: Four miniature horses. METHODS: Medical records and radiographs were reviewed for history, physical examination findings, lameness evaluation, radiographic evaluation, surgical techniques, postoperative complications, and outcome. A 10- or 11-hole, 4.5-mm narrow dynamic compression plate and 4.5-mm cortical screws were applied to the cranial surface of the scapula and cranial surface of the humerus after osteotomy of the intermediate tubercle. In most horses, 1 or 2 screws were inserted in lag fashion across the joint, through holes in the plate. RESULTS: Scapulohumeral osteoarthritis was diagnosed radiographically in 4 horses, and 3 horses had concurrent shoulder luxation or subluxation. All horses had grade 3 or 4 lameness before surgery, and most improved by 1 to 2 grades after surgery. Despite complications of implant failure (2 horses), infection (2 horses), scapular fracture (1 horse), and atrophy of the shoulder muscles (1 horse), functional arthrodesis reduced morbidity in all horses. CONCLUSIONS: Scapulohumeral arthrodesis facilitates early return to weight bearing in miniature horses with severe scapulohumeral joint osteoarthrosis. Despite functional gait abnormality, the horses ambulated quite well after surgery. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Scapulohumeral arthrodesis should be considered for debilitating conditions of the shoulder joint in miniature horses, especially when the intended outcome is breeding or pasture soundness.  相似文献

The simultaneous occurrence of factor XII deficiency and von Willebrand's disease (VWD) is described in a family of Miniature Poodles affected concurrently with a familial non-spherocytic hemolytic anemia. Although there was a dominant distribution of factor XII deficiency in this family of dogs, only the dogs suffering from non-spherocytic hemolytic anemia had concurrent VWD gene expression. Neither the factor XII deficient dogs nor the VWD carrier dogs displayed bleeding tendencies.  相似文献

During a widespread anthrax outbreak in Canada, miniature horses were vaccinated using a live spore anthrax vaccine. Several of these horses died from an apparent immune-mediated vasculitis temporally associated with this vaccination. During the course of the outbreak, other miniature horses from different regions with a similar vaccination history, clinical signs, and necropsy findings were found.  相似文献

Hyperlipidemia in Caspian miniature horses: Effects of undernutrition   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The susceptibility of Caspian miniature horses to hyperlipidemia was followed in a study of healthy Caspian miniature horses in which food but not water was withheld for 48 hours. Two months before the study, the horses were fed a high-energy diet. The mean of weight gain was 26.46 kg per horse during this period. All horses had a normal rectal temperature, respiratory rate, and pulse throughout the experiment. During the period of food deprivation, levels of serum triglyceride, aspartate aminotransferase, and alanine aminotransferase significantly (P < .05) increased and glucose concentration decreased. As a conclusion, Caspian miniature horses were susceptible to hyperlipidemia, but they did not show classic hyperlipemia syndrome.  相似文献

Values for serum ferritin, serum iron, and serum total-iron binding capacity were determined in 100 hospitalized horses. Six foals had iron deficiency, as indicated by low serum ferritin and iron concentrations. Twenty-eight horses had low serum iron content and normal or high serum ferritin content and were considered to have pseudo-iron deficiency, possibly in response to infection. Ten horses had serum ferritin concentrations that were quite high, probably indicating iron overload.  相似文献

In most species, large variations in body size necessitate dose adjustments based on an allometric function of body weight. Despite the substantial disparity in body size between miniature horses and light‐breed horses, there are no studies investigating appropriate dosing of any veterinary drug in miniature horses. The purpose of this study was to determine whether miniature horses should receive a different dosage of flunixin meglumine than that used typically in light‐breed horses. A standard dose of flunixin meglumine was administered intravenously to eight horses of each breed, and three‐compartmental analysis was used to compare pharmacokinetic parameters between breed groups. The total body clearance of flunixin was 0.97 ± 0.30 mL/min/kg in miniature horses and 1.04 ± 0.27 mL/min/kg in quarter horses. There were no significant differences between miniature horses and quarter horses in total body clearance, the terminal elimination rate, area under the plasma concentration versus time curve, apparent volume of distribution at steady‐state or the volume of the central compartment for flunixin (> 0.05). Therefore, flunixin meglumine may be administered to miniature horses at the same dosage as is used in light‐breed horses.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To report on the outcome of surgical treatment of acute abdominal crises in miniature breed horses. DESIGN: Retrospective case series of miniature horses presented to the University Veterinary Centre, Camden with an acute abdominal crisis. METHODS: Hospital records of all miniature horses that underwent ventral midline laparotomy for acute abdominal crisis between 1997 and 2001 were reviewed. The signalment, history, clinical signs, results of ancillary diagnostic procedures, location and type of intestinal lesion, treatment and outcome were retrieved from each case record. Long-term survival was determined by telephone interview of owners. RESULTS: Eleven miniature horses including five females and six males underwent ventral midline laparotomies for acute abdominal crisis during the study period. Ages ranged between 1 month and 19 years. Surgical findings included faecalith obstruction (seven horses), enterolith (one horse), strangulating lipoma of the descending colon (one horse), jejunal infarction (one horse), and caecal infarction (one horse). Long-term survival rate (minimum 12 months post surgery) was 55%. Six of eight horses with simple intraluminal obstructions survived, while the three horses with gastrointestinal lesions associated with vascular compromise were euthanased either at surgery (caecal infarction), or postoperatively, due to complications (strangulating lipoma of the descending colon, jejunal infarction). Postoperative complications in this study included impaction of the descending colon (two horses), diarrhoea (two horses), peritonitis (one horse), hyperlipaemia (two horses), incisional infection (two horses) and abdominal adhesions (one horse). Hyperlipidaemia was present in five of seven horses in which serum triglycerides were measured at presentation. CONCLUSIONS: Simple intraluminal obstructions of the large intestine were frequently encountered during exploratory laparotomy in miniature horses presented for acute abdominal crises, and their surgical treatment was associated with a good prognosis. In contrast, this study suggested that abdominal pain associated with vascular compromise of gastrointestinal tissues in miniature horses was associated with a poorer prognosis, consistent with reports in other horse breeds. Possible contributing factors to faecalith formation, including poor quality roughage, dental disease, and inadequate water consumption, should be recognised and avoided in miniature horses. Serum triglyceride concentrations should be measured in miniature horses presented for acute abdominal pain. If elevated, nutritional supplementation should be provided.  相似文献

This paper describes the clinical and diagnostic features of 20 cases of scapulohumeral osteoarthritis in Shetland ponies, miniature horses and falabella ponies. The history and clinical signs were similar in all the cases Radiographically they all had consistent changes which consisted predominantly of articular osteophytes and periarticular enthesiophytes. Six of the cases had radiographic evidence of dysplasia of the scapulohumeral joint, although it was uncertain whether this was a primary or a secondary finding. No specific treatment appeared to be advantageous. At follow up, six of the ponies had to be euthanased owing to continuing severe lameness; the other 14 ponies remained lame, but were maintained at pasture by the occasional use of oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. No definitive aetiology for the condition was identified, but it is proposed that an underlying dysplasia, or lack of collateral support may predispose the scapulohumeral joint of miniature horse breeds to the disease.  相似文献

Dilated cardiomyopathy in a family of dogs was found to be associated with decreased myocardial L-carnitine concentrations, when compared with those in control dogs. In 2 affected dogs, treatment with high doses of L-carnitine was associated with increased myocardial L-carnitine concentration and greatly improved health and myocardial function. Withdrawal of L-carnitine supplementation from these dogs resulted in development of myocardial dysfunction and clinical signs of dilated cardiomyopathy.  相似文献

Degenerative myelopathy was diagnosed in six Mongolian wild horses. Three of the horses had a history of ataxia dating from birth to 3 months of age. The clinical signs were uncoordinated movement of the hindlimbs and an abnormally wide-based gait and stance. The other 3 horses had mild ataxia. There were no gross lesions in the brain, vertebrae, or spinal cord. Histologic examination revealed degeneration of the neural processes in the ventral and lateral funiculi of all 6 horses. Myelin sheaths were dilated and vacuolated, and there were swollen, fragmented, or lysed axons. Neuronal degeneration, phagocytosis, and accumulation of periodic acid-Schiff-positive, xylol-insoluble lipopigment were observed in the affected neurons of the dorsal root ganglia. The plasma alpha-tocopherol values of 5 of the affected horses ranged from less than 0.03 to 0.08 (mean, 0.04 +/- 0.01) mg/dl. Seven clinically normal horses from the same herd had a range of less than 0.03 to 0.3 (mean, 0.11 +/- 0.02) mg/dl, which was low enough to be considered deficient.  相似文献
