Peatlands are significant sources of the important greenhouse gas CH4 and generally known as sinks for atmospheric CO2 through peat accumulation. Accurate measurements of the subsurface concentrations of these gases are of pivotal importance for experimental studies improving our understanding of the dynamics and controls on the exchanges of these gases between peat soils and the atmosphere. In this paper we first briefly outline examples of different probe-based techniques for the determination of subsurface gas concentrations and thereafter we document the development and testing of two different membrane probe systems. Finally we discuss a few applications of the probes and show some results obtained by testing them in the laboratory.  相似文献

Common agricultural practices, e.g. soil tillage and organic amendment, may affect field earthworm communities considerably. However, there is little data to show how long the changes persist after a certain action. The effect of peat, commonly used in Finland to improve the horticultural soil structure, on key soil organisms is also largely unknown. Earthworm abundance and microbial biomass were studied in a strawberry field experiment (soil type silty clay) with a history of different crops (strawberry, timothy, caraway, rye, turnip rape, fiddleneck, onion and buckwheat) and peat treatments. Sampling was carried out after three years of perennial cropping of strawberry. Half of the area was peat-amended twice three years apart. The earthworm community consisted mainly of Aporrectodea caliginosa and Lumbricus terrestris. Soil peat amendment almost doubled the number of endogeic A. caliginosa, but had no effect on the anecic L. terrestris. The effect of cropping history on earthworms diminished after three years of strawberry cropping. Only the positive effect of caraway on juvenile Lumbricus spp. was detectable three years after its cropping had been finished. However, some crops had secondary effects on the earthworm distribution without significant influence on their numbers while they were grown, e.g. high numbers of A. caliginosa were recorded from soil with a history of timothy ley. The effect of strawberry cropping was contradictory: six years of continuous strawberry cropping decreased the number of the anecic L. terrestris, but during the last three years on strawberry, the proportion of L. terrestris increased from 6% to 40% in the experimental area with a concomitant great drop in the number of A. caliginosa. The role of different agricultural practices (no tillage, mulching, inter-row grass cover and pesticides) is discussed. The crop-induced changes persisted in the microbial biomass for three years (onion cropping reduced microbial biomass C), but soil amendment had no effect on microbes. The abundance of A. caliginosa was associated with soil organic C, but not with soil microbial biomass.  相似文献

Ecosystem and biogeochemical responses to anthropogenic stressors are the result of complex interactions between plants and microbes. A mechanistic understanding of how plant traits influence microbial processes is needed in order to predict the ecosystem-level effects of natural or anthropogenic change. This is particularly true in wetland ecosystems, where plants alter the availability of both electron donors (e.g., organic carbon) and electron acceptors (e.g., oxygen and ferric iron), thereby regulating the total amount of anaerobic respiration and the production of methane, a highly potent greenhouse gas. In this study, we examined how plant traits associated with plant inputs of carbon (photosynthesis and biomass) and oxygen (root porosity and ferric iron on roots) to mineral soils relate to microbial competition for organic carbon and, ultimately, methane production. Plant productivity was positively correlated with microbial respiration and negatively correlated to methane production. Root porosity was relatively constant across plant species, but belowground biomass, total biomass, and the concentration of oxidized (ferric) iron on roots varied significantly between species. As a result the size of the total root oxidized iron pool varied considerably across plant species, scaling with plant productivity. Large pools of oxidized iron were related to high CO2:CH4 ratios during microbial respiration, indicating that as plant productivity and biomass increased, microbes used non-methanogenic respiration pathways, most likely including the reduction of iron oxides. Taken together these results suggest that increased oxygen input from plants with greater biomass can offset any potential stimulation of methanogenic microbes from additional carbon inputs. Because the species composition of plant communities influences both electron donor and acceptor availability in wetland soils, changes in plant species as a consequence of anthropogenic disturbance have the potential to trigger profound effects on microbial processes, including changes in anaerobic decomposition rates and the proportion of mineralized carbon emitted as the greenhouse gas methane.  相似文献

To understand the implications of atmospheric nitrogen deposition on carbon turnover in peatlands, we conducted a 13C pulse labeling experiment on Calluna vulgaris and Eriophorum vaginatum already receiving long-term (5 years) amendments of 56 kg N ha−1 y−1 as ammonium or nitrate. We examined shoot tissue retention, net ecosystem respiration returns of the 13C pulse, and soil porewater DOC content under the two species. 13C fixation in Eriophorum leaves was enhanced with nitrogen addition and doubled with nitrate supply. This newly fixed C appeared to be relocated below-ground faster with nitrogen fertilization as respiration returns were unaffected by N inputs. By contrast, increases in 13C fixation were not observed in Calluna. Instead, net ecosystem respiration rates over Calluna increased with N fertilization. There was no significant label incorporation into DOC, suggesting a conservative strategy of peatland vegetation regarding allocation of C through root exudation. Greater concentrations of total DOC were identified with nitrate addition in Calluna. Given the long-term nature of the experiment and the high N inputs, the overall impacts of nitrogen amendments on the fate of recently synthesized C in Eriophorum and Calluna in this ombrotrophic peatland were surprisingly more moderate than originally hypothesized. This may be due to N being effectively retained within the bryophyte layer, thus limiting, and delaying the onset of, below-ground effects.  相似文献

The Convention on Biological Diversity and the subsequent International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture have proved a watershed in plant genetic resources (PGR) conservation and consequent initiatives have set various PGR conservation targets to be met by 2010. The aim of our paper is to develop ideas and issues concerning the monitoring of natural genetic resources: particularly in terms of developing a baseline from which to measure levels of genetic diversity. Three species of Brassica (B. nigra, B. oleracea, B. rapa) found wild in the UK were assessed for levels of genetic diversity using AFLP. The relationship between genetic distribution and ecogeographic distribution was considered for each species to determine patterns that may be useful in formulating conservation strategies. Genetic distance between populations of B. nigra and B. rapa were correlated to geographic distance. Levels of genetic polymorphism in B. oleracea were correlated to soil pH while in B. rapa they were correlated to soil coarseness. In terms of PGR conservation these findings may suggest an emphasis toward in situ conservation of a selection of disparate populations would be appropriate where possible as such adaptations may be lost in ex situ collections.  相似文献

Methane emissions from soils are the net result of two processes: methane (CH4) production and CH4 oxidation. In order to understand how both processes respond to environmental changes, it is necessary to distinguish between CH4 production and oxidation. In bacterial cultures and small soil samples, difluoromethane (CH2F2) was found to inhibit CH4 oxidation reversibly, without affecting CH4 production. Hence, CH2F2 allows the study of CH4 production directly and of CH4 oxidation indirectly. To our knowledge, however, the inhibitory effect of CH2F2 within soil columns has not yet been evaluated. We therefore tested which CH2F2 concentration is needed for complete inhibition of CH4 oxidation in reconstructed 28 cm high peat soil columns under different water levels (WL). We found that soil columns require considerably higher headspace CH2F2 concentrations for complete inhibition of CH4 oxidation than small soil samples. Inhibition remained complete until ca. 24 h after CH2F2 exposure. Then, the inhibitory effect diminished. The time needed for the inhibitory effect to disappear depended on WL; at a low WL of −15 cm, the inhibitory effect declined slowly and oxidation rates recovered by 90% only after 12 days. At WL = −5 cm, CH4 oxidation recovered much faster (90% recovery after ca. 3 days). Last, CH2F2 addition significantly decreased the N2O emissions, whereas CO2 emissions remained unaltered.  相似文献

The effects of elevated CO2 supply on N2O and CH4 fluxes and biomass production of Phleum pratense were studied in a greenhouse experiment. Three sets of 12 farmed peat soil mesocosms (10 cm dia, 47 cm long) sown with P. pratense and equally distributed in four thermo-controlled greenhouses were fertilised with a commercial fertiliser in order to add 2, 6 or 10 g N m−2. In two of the greenhouses, CO2 concentration was kept at atmospheric concentration (360 μmol mol−1) and in the other two at doubled concentration (720 μmol mol−1). Soil temperature was kept at 15 °C and air temperature at 20 °C. Natural lighting was supported by artificial light and deionized water was used to regulate soil moisture. Forage was harvested and the plants fertilised three times during the basic experiment, followed by an extra fertilisations and harvests. At the end of the experiment CH4 production and CH4 oxidation potentials were determined; roots were collected and the biomass was determined. From the three first harvests the amount of total N in the aboveground biomass was determined. N2O and CH4 exchange was monitored using a closed chamber technique and a gas chromatograph. The highest N2O fluxes (on average, 255 μg N2O m−2 h−1 during period IV) occurred just after fertilisation at high water contents, and especially at the beginning of the growing season (on average, 490 μg N2O m−2 h−1 during period I) when the competition of vegetation for N was low. CH4 fluxes were negligible throughout the experiment, and for all treatments the production and oxidation potentials of CH4 were inconsequential. Especially at the highest rates of fertilisation, the elevated supply of CO2 increased above- and below-ground biomass production, but both at the highest and lowest rates of fertilisation, decreased the total amount of N in the aboveground dry biomass. N2O fluxes tended to be higher under doubled CO2 concentrations, indicating that increasing atmospheric CO2 concentration may affect N and C dynamics in farmed peat soil.  相似文献

Invasive earthworms can have significant impacts on C dynamics through their feeding, burrowing, and casting activities, including the protection of C in microaggregates and alteration of soil respiration. European earthworm invasion is known to affect soil micro- and mesofauna, but little is known about impacts of invasive earthworms on other soil macrofauna. Asian earthworms (Amynthas spp.) are increasingly being reported in the southern Appalachian Mountains in southeastern North America. This region is home to a diverse assemblage of native millipedes, many of which share niches with earthworm species. This situation indicates potential for earthworm-millipede competition in areas subject to Amynthas invasion. In a laboratory microcosm experiment, we used two 13C enriched food sources (red oak, Quercus rubra, and eastern hemlock, Tsuga canadensis) to assess food preferences of millipedes (Pseudopolydesmus erasus), to determine the effects of millipedes and earthworms (Amynthas corticis) on soil structure, and to ascertain the nature and extent of the interactions between earthworms and millipedes. Millipedes consumed both litter species and preferred red oak litter over eastern hemlock litter. Mortality and growth of millipedes were not affected by earthworm presence during the course of the experiment, but millipedes assimilated much less litter-derived C when earthworms were present.Fauna and litter treatments had significant effects on soil respiration. Millipedes alone reduced CO2 efflux from microcosms relative to no fauna controls, whereas earthworms alone and together with millipedes increased respiration, relative to the no fauna treatment. CO2 derived from fresh litter was repressed by the presence of macrofauna. The presence of red oak litter increased CO2 efflux considerably, compared to hemlock litter treatments.Millipedes, earthworms, and both together reduced particulate organic matter. Additionally, earthworms created significant shifts in soil aggregates from the 2000-250 and 250-53 μm fractions to the >2000 μm size class. Earthworm-induced soil aggregation was lessened in the 0-2 cm layer in the presence of millipedes. Earthworms translocated litter-derived C to soil throughout the microcosm. Our results suggest that invasion of ecosystems by A. corticis in the southern Appalachian Mountains is unlikely to be limited by litter species and these earthworms are likely to compete directly for food resources with native millipedes. Widespread invasion could cause a net loss of C due to increased respiration rates, but this may be offset by C protected in water-stable soil aggregates.  相似文献

Emissions of N2O and CH4 and CH4 oxidation rates were measured from Lolium perenne swards in a short-term study under ambient (36 Pa) and elevated (60 Pa) atmospheric CO2 at the Free Air Carbon dioxide Enrichment experiment, Eschikon, Switzerland. Elevated pCO2 increased (P<0.05) N2O emissions from high N fertilised (11.2 g N m−2) swards by 69%, but had no significant effect on net emissions of CH4. Application of 13C-CH4 (11 μl l−1; 11 at.% excess 13C) to closed chamber headspaces in microplots enabled determination of rates of 13C-CH4 oxidation even when net CH4 fluxes from main plots were positive. We found a significant interaction between fertiliser application rate and atmospheric pCO2 on 13C-CH4 oxidation rates that was attributed to differences in gross nitrification rates and C and N availability. CH4 oxidation was slower and thought to be temporarily inhibited in the high N ambient pCO2 sward. The most rapid CH4 oxidation of 14.6 μg 13C-CH4 m−2 h−1 was measured in the high fertilised elevated pCO2 sward, and we concluded that either elevated pCO2 had a stimulatory effect on CH4 oxidation or inhibition of oxidation following fertiliser application was lowered under elevated pCO2. Application of 14NH415NO3 and 15NH415NO3 (10 at.% excess 15N) to different replicates enabled determination of the respective contributions of nitrification and denitrification to N2O emissions. Inhibition of CH4 oxidation in the high fertilised ambient pCO2 sward, due to competition between NH3 and CH4 for methane monooxygenase enzymes or toxic effects of NH2OH or NO2 produced during nitrification, was hypothesised to increase gross nitrification (12.0 mg N kg dry soil−1) and N2O emissions during nitrification (327 mg 15N-N2O m−2 over 11 d). Our results indicate that increasing atmospheric concentrations of CO2 may increase emissions of N2O by denitrification, lower nitrification rates and either increase or decrease the ability of soil to act as a sink for atmospheric CH4 depending on fertiliser management.  相似文献

Wind-farms receive public and governmental support as an alternative energy source mitigating air pollution. However, they can have adverse effects on wildlife, particularly through collision with turbines. Research on wind-farm effects has focused on estimating mortality rates, behavioural changes or interspecific differences in vulnerability. Studies dealing with their effects on endangered or rare species populations are notably scarce. We tested the hypothesis that wind-farms increase extinction probability of long-lived species through increments in mortality rates. For this purpose, we evaluate potential consequences of wind-farms on the population dynamics of a globally endangered long-lived raptor in an area where the species maintains its greatest stronghold and wind-farms are rapidly increasing. Nearly one-third of all breeding territories of our model species are in wind-farm risk zones. Our intensive survey shows that wind-farms decrease survival rates of this species differently depending on individual breeding status. Consistent with population monitoring, population projections showed that all subpopulations and the meta-population are decreasing. However, population sizes and, therefore, time to extinction significantly decreased when wind-farm mortality was included in models. Our results represent a qualitative warning exercise showing how very low reductions in survival of territorial and non-territorial birds associated with wind-farms can strongly impact population viability of long-lived species. This highlights the need for examining long-term impacts of wind-farms rather than focusing on short-term mortality, as is often promoted by power companies and some wildlife agencies. Unlike other non-natural causes of mortality difficult to eradicate or control, wind-farm fatalities can be lowered by powering down or removing risky turbines and/or farms, and by placing them outside areas critical for endangered birds.  相似文献

There are no reports on the effects of elevated carbon dioxide [CO2] on the fluxes of N2O, CO2 and CH4 from semi-arid wheat cropping systems. These three soil gas fluxes were measured using closed chambers under ambient (420 ± 18 μmol mol−1) and elevated (565 ± 37 μmol mol−1) at the Free-Air Carbon dioxide Enrichment experimental facility in northern China. Measurements were made over five weeks on a wheat crop (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Zhongmai 175). Elevated [CO2] increased N2O and CO2 emission from soil by 60% and 15%, respectively, but had no significant effect on CH4 flux. There was no significant interaction between [CO2] and N application rate on these gas fluxes, probably because soil N was not limiting. At least 22% increase in C storage is required to offset the observed increase in greenhouse gas emissions under elevated [CO2].  相似文献

We evaluated the spatial structures of nitrous oxide (N2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), and methane (CH4) fluxes in an Acacia mangium plantation stand in Sumatra, Indonesia, in drier (August) and wetter (March) seasons. A 60 × 100-m plot was established in an A. mangium plantation that included different topographical elements of the upper plateau, lower plateau, upper slope and foot slope. The plot was divided into 10 × 10-m grids and gas fluxes and soil properties were measured at 77 grid points at 10-m intervals within the plot. Spatial structures of the gas fluxes and soil properties were identified using geostatistical analyses. Averaged N2O and CO2 fluxes in the wetter season (1.85 mg N m−2 d−1 and 4.29 g C m−2 d−1, respectively) were significantly higher than those in the drier season (0.55 mg N m−2 d−1 and 2.73 g C m−2 d−1, respectively) and averaged CH4 uptake rates in the drier season (−0.62 mg C m−2 d−1) were higher than those in the wetter season (−0.24 mg C m−2 d−1). These values of N2O fluxes in A. mangium soils were higher than those reported for natural forest soils in Sumatra, while CO2 and CH4 fluxes were in the range of fluxes reported for natural forest soils. Seasonal differences in these gas fluxes appears to be controlled by soil water content and substrate availability due to differing precipitation and mineralization of litter between seasons. N2O fluxes had strong spatial dependence with a range of about 18 m in both the drier and wetter seasons. Topography was associated with the N2O fluxes in the wetter season with higher and lower fluxes on the foot slope and on the upper plateau, respectively, via controlling the anaerobic-aerobic conditions in the soils. In the drier season, however, we could not find obvious topographic influences on the spatial patterns of N2O fluxes and they may have depended on litter amount distribution. CO2 fluxes had no spatial dependence in both seasons, but the topographic influence was significant in the drier season with lowest fluxes on the foot slope, while there was no significant difference between topographic positions in the wetter season. The distributions of litter amount and soil organic matter were possibly associated with CO2 fluxes through their effects on microbial activities and fine root distribution in this A. mangium plantation.  相似文献

In a Japanese forest, CH4 uptake rate and methanotrophic community structure in the soil were investigated at four sites of different vegetation. At two of these sites, undergrowth was dominated by Sasa senanensis, and that of another was dominated by Sasa kurilensis. At the rest site, undergrowth had been removed artificially. The tree-layer composition differed between the two sites with S. senanensis, but tree layer of the other two sites were dominated by the same species. At the site lacking undergrowth, observed CH4 uptake rate was twice as high as that at the other sites. Under laboratory conditions, soil sample from the site lacking undergrowth exhibited CH4 consumption rate higher than that of the adjacent site with the same dominating tree species. The community structures of methanotrophs were investigated with denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) of the gene encoding particulate methane monooxygenase (pmoA). The banding patterns observed were different depending on the type of undergrowth vegetation. The sequences of the DGGE bands were closely related to each other and belonged to the “upland soil cluster alpha” (USCα). These results imply possible close relationship between the undergrowth vegetation and methanotrophic communities in forest soils.  相似文献

Cellulose and lignin degradation dynamics was monitored during the leaf litter decomposition of three typical species of the Mediterranean area, Cistus incanus L., Myrtus communis L. and Quercus ilex L., using the litter bag method. Total N and its distribution among lignin, cellulose and acid-detergent-soluble fractions were measured and related to the overall decay process. The litter organic substance of Cistus and Myrtus decomposed more rapidly than that of Quercus. The decay constants were 0.47 year−1, 0.75 year−1 and 0.30 year−1 for Cistus, Myrtus and Quercus, respectively. Lignin and cellulose contents were different as were their relative amounts (34 and 18%, 15 and 37%, 37 and 39% of the overall litter organic matter before exposure, for Cistus, Myrtus and Quercus, respectively). Lignin began to decrease after 6 and 8 months of exposure in Cistus and Myrtus, respectively, while it did not change significantly during the entire study period in Quercus. The holocellulose, in contrast, began to decompose in Cistus after 1 year, while in Quercus and Myrtus immediately. Nitrogen was strongly immobilized in all the litters in the early period of decay. Its release began after the first year in Cistus and Myrtus and after 2 years of decomposition in Quercus. These litters still contained about 60, 20 and 90% of the initial nitrogen at the end of the experiment (3 years). Prior to litter exposure nitrogen associated with the lignin fraction was 65, 54 and 37% in Cistus, Myrtus and Quercus, while that associated with the cellulose fraction was 30, 24 and 28%. Although most of the nitrogen was not lost from litters, its distribution among the litter components changed significantly during decomposition. In Cistus and Myrtus the nitrogen associated with lignin began to decrease just 4 months after exposure. In Quercus this process was slowed and after 3 years of decomposition 8% of the nitrogen remained associated with lignin or lignin-like substances. The nitrogen associated with cellulose or cellulose-like substances, in contrast, began to decrease from the beginning of cellulose decomposition in all three species. At the end of the study period most of the nitrogen was not associated to the lignocellulose fraction but to the acid-detergent-soluble substance (87, 88 and 84% of the remaining litter nitrogen).  相似文献

This study considers the selection of sites based on the densities of breeding waders that would be considered to be distributed widely across common habitats in Scotland: so-called ‘wider countryside’ species. Five methods to provide a hierarchical classification of sites are assessed. Fifty percent of the populations of redshank (Tringa totanus) and snipe (Gallinago gallinago) occur on just 2 and 4.5% of Scottish lowlands, respectively, yet neither are suitably protected by conservation measures and both would benefit from a carefully targeted approach to their conservation. Three species, lapwing (Vanellus vanellus), curlew (Numenius arquata) and oystercatcher (Haematopus ostralegus) are more appropriately considered to be dispersed species. We propose that, if the density of a breeding wader on a site exceeds the threshold level predicted for the top 1% of Scottish lowland for that species, and if the area of the site exceeds 1 km2 then that site be considered to be a key site for farmland waders. The minimum density (in pairs km−2) must exceed 16.8 for lapwing, 10.1 for oystercatcher, 6.1 for snipe, 7.5 for curlew or 3.6 for redshank.  相似文献

A field experiment was conducted to study the effects of peat amendment and crop production system on earthworms. The experiment was established on a field previously cultivated with oats and with silt as the main soil type. Perennial crops strawberry, timothy and caraway, and annual crops rye, turnip rape, buckwheat, onion and fiddleneck were cultivated with conventional methods. All the crops were grown with and without soil amendment with peat. Earthworms were sampled twice: 4 and 28 months after establishment of the experiment. In the former case part of the experimental plots were soil sampled and hand sorted for estimation of earthworms. In the latter case all experimental plots were sampled and both soil sampling and mustard extraction was carried out. Soil organic carbon and microbial biomass was measured at 14 and 28 months. Peat increased the abundance of juvenile Aporrectodea caliginosa by 74% in three growing seasons, but had no effect on adult numbers. Lumbricus terrestris numbers were not increased by peat treatment. Three season cultivation of caraway favoured both A. caliginosa and L. terrestris. An equal abundance of A. caliginosa was also found in plots cultivated with turnip rape and fiddleneck. Total earthworm and especially A. caliginosa numbers were very small in plastic-mulched strawberry beds. This was mainly attributed to repeated use of the insecticide endosulfan. With the strawberry plots omitted there was a significant correlation between soil microbial N measured at 14 months and juvenile Aporrectodea spp. and Lumbricus spp. numbers measured at 28 months. Adult earthworm numbers were not associated with either soil organic C or microbial biomass.  相似文献

Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) corn is reported to produce lignin-rich residues, compared to non-Bt (NBt) corn, suggesting it is more resistant to decomposition. As the Bt gene is expressed selectively in stem and leaf tissue, it could affect lignin distribution in corn, which naturally has greater lignin content in roots than in stems and leaves. Our objective was to evaluate the effects of corn plant components, the Bt gene and elevated-lignin inputs on decomposition. Roots, stems and leaves from Bt corn and NBt corn isolines enriched with 13C and 15N were finely ground and mixed separately with soil, then incubated at 20 °C for 36 weeks. The effect of elevated lignin on decomposition was tested by adding a commercial lignin source (indulin lignin) to half of the samples. In addition to weekly CO2 analysis and regular measurement of N mineralization, the degree of lignin degradation was evaluated at 1 and 36 weeks from the acid to aldehyde ratio (Ad/Al) of vanillyl and syringyl lignin-derived phenols. The CO2 production and N mineralization was lower in root-amended soils than stem- and leaf-amended soils. The Bt genetic modification increased CO2 production from stem-amended soils (P < 0.05) and decreased N mineralization in root-amended soils. The 13C and 15N results also showed more residue-C and -N retained in soils mixed with NBt stem residues. After 36 weeks leaf- and stem-amended soils with indulin lignin had a lower Ad/Al ratio and were less degraded than soils without exogenous lignin. In conclusion, plant lignin and nitrogen contents were good predictors of CO2 production and N mineralization potential. Corn roots decomposed more slowly than aboveground components emphasizing the importance of recalcitrant root residues in sustaining the organic matter content of soil.  相似文献

Soil heterotrophic respiration fluxes at plot scale exhibit substantial spatial and temporal variability. Within this study secondary information was used to spatially predict heterotrophic respiration. Chamber-based measurements of heterotrophic respiration fluxes were repeated for 15 measurement campaigns within a bare 13 × 14 m2 soil plot. Soil water contents and temperatures were measured simultaneously with the same spatial and temporal resolution. Further, we used measurements of soil organic carbon content and apparent electrical conductivity as well as the prior measurement of the target variable. The previous variables were used as co-variates in a stepwise multiple linear regression analysis to spatially predict bare soil respiration. In particular the prior measurement of the target variable, the soil water content and the apparent electrical conductivity, showed a certain, even though limited, predictive power. In the first step we applied external drift kriging and regression kriging to determine the improvement of using co-variates in an estimation procedure in comparison to ordinary kriging. The improvement using co-variates ranged between 40 and 1% for a single measurement campaign. The difference in improving the prediction of respiration fluxes between external drift kriging and regression kriging was marginal. In a second step we applied sequential Gaussian simulations conditioned with external drift kriging to generate more realistic spatial patterns of heterotrophic respiration at plot scale. Compared to the estimation approaches the conditional stochastic simulations revealed a significantly improved reproduction of the probability density function and the semivariogram of the original point data.  相似文献

Earthworms have been termed ‘ecosystem engineers’ (sensu [Jones, C.G., Lawton, J.H., Shachak, M., 1994. Organisms as ecosysem engineers. Oikos 69, 373-386.]) because of the important roles they play in the soil. As a consequence, it is assumed that if earthworms change their behaviour following exposure to pesticides or pollutants this could have a drastic impact on soil functioning. To test this assumption under laboratory conditions, we studied the burrow systems made by two earthworm species (the anecic Aporrectodea nocturna and the endogeic Allolobophora icterica) in artificial soil cores containing imidacloprid, a widely used neonicotinoid insecticide. After 1-month incubation period, the macropores created in the soil core were analyzed by tomography. In order to further characterize transfer properties associated with burrow systems gas diffusion measurements were also carried out. The burrow systems made by the two earthworm species were very different: A. nocturna made more continuous, less branched, more vertical and wider burrows than A. icterica. Some changes to A. nocturna burrow systems were observed after exposure to imidacloprid (they made a smaller burrow system and burrows were more narrow), but only at the highest concentration of imidacloprid used (0.5 mg kg−1). A. icterica worms were more sensitive to imidacloprid and many differences in their burrow systems (length, sinuosity, branching rate and number of burrows) were observed at both concentrations tested (0.1 and 0. 5 mg kg−1). As a consequence, the continuity of the burrow systems made by both species was altered following imidacloprid treatment. Gas diffusion through the A. nocturna soil cores was reduced but no difference in gas diffusion was observed in the A. icterica soil cores.  相似文献
