Dental extractions in horses may result in bacteremia, which can lead to systemic complications. Bacterial meningitis following oral cheek tooth extractions in a 17-year-old Thoroughbred gelding is described in this report. The bacterial meningitis was confirmed by histopathology. The gelding was presented for evaluation of intermittent fever, loose feces, and mild colic signs which started 5 days after cheek tooth extraction. This case illustrates a rare complication associated with oral tooth extraction in a horse and highlights the unusual presenting features of meningitis.Key clinical message:Bacterial meningitis secondary to oral cheek tooth extraction should be considered as differential diagnosis; particularly in cases with the development of pyrexia a few days after the procedure.  相似文献

Immunologic deficiency was suspected in an 18-month-old Standardbred horse with persistent fever, multifocal bacterial infection, and neutropenia with a large number of immature neutrophils. Serum protein electrophoresis revealed marked depression of the gamma-globulin fraction (0.2 g/100 ml). Immunologic testing and histologic examination of lymphoid tissues identified the immune deficit as agammaglobulinemia. Serum concentrations of immunoglobulin (Ig)G and IgG(T) were initially low and declined with time; IgM and IgA were not detectable. The horse failed to produce antibodies when inoculated with foreign antigens but had a positive cell-mediated skin reaction to intradermal phytolectin injection, and lymphocytes responded normally to in vitro stimulation by mitogens. Histologic examination of lymphoid tissues revealed absence of germinal centers and plasma cells.  相似文献

Cryoglobulin was isolated from a horse which had glomerulo-nephritis and a history of swelling and skin ulcers of the limbs in the winter. The isolated cryoglobulin showed a single peak on a gel permeation chromatography column with an apparent molecular mass (Mr) of 180,000 which could be divided into two gamma bands by cellulose acetate electrophoresis. Immunoelectrophoretic analysis revealed that the cryoglobulin formed two precipitation lines with anti-horse IgG. Spur formation was observed when the cryoglobulin and the IgG purified from a normal healthy horse were cross-reacted with anti-horse IgG on a double diffusion gel. In addition, sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis under the reduced conditions showed that the isolated cryoglobulin consisted of two doublets of polypeptides with Mr values of 52,000 and 50,000, and 31,000, and 30,000, corresponding to the heavy chain and the light chain of the horse IgG molecules, respectively. These results suggest that the isolated cryoglobulin might consist of two different IgG molecules, and that the manifestations such as foot swelling with skin ulcers and renal failures were all induced by the cryoglobulin in the serum.  相似文献

Osteomyelitis caused by Cryptococcus neoformans was diagnosed in a three-year-old male Irish wolfhound. The case details and radiological findings of radiolucency and periosteal reaction of the left third metatarsal bone had lead to an initial diagnosis of a malignant bone tumour. Biopsy revealed a fungal granuloma and culture identified the causal organism. A four month course of ketaconazole was instigated and the lameness resolved. Twelve months after the end of treatment there was no recurrence of the problem.  相似文献

A 5-year-old castrated male Golden Retriever was evaluated for polyuria, polydipsia, and progressive regurgitation thought to be a result of bacterial pyelonephritis and megaesophagus. Bacteriologic culture of urine failed to yield clinically relevant growth, and results of a urine sediment examination were normal. With time, intention tremors and progressive neurologic dysfunction were also observed. At necropsy, a diagnosis of cryptococcal disease was confirmed histologically and immunohistochemically. Findings in the dog of this report were indicative of nephrogenic diabetes insipidus with polyuria and polydipsia caused by cryptococcal pyelonephritis. Neurologic manifestations of systemic cryptococcus infection included megaesophagus, esophageal hypomotility, and regurgitation attributed to localization of cryptococcal organisms in the brain stem in the region of the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of polyuria secondary to cryptococcal pyelonephritis.  相似文献

Progressive multisystemic disease caused by Blastomyces dermatitidis was diagnosed in a 17-year-old Quarter horse broodmare. The mare had been treated unsuccessfully with antibiotics for mastitis 3 months postpartum. The disease progressed to exudative cutaneous lesions affecting the ventrum, pectoral region, and limbs accompanied by weight loss across several months. Yeast bodies were observed in swabs of the cutaneous exudate, suggesting a clinical diagnosis of blastomycosis. Following referral, pleural effusion, cavitated lung lesions, and hyperproteinemia were identified, and the mare was euthanized because of poor prognosis. Necropsy revealed extensive pyogranulomas in the mammary gland, skin, subcutaneous tissues, and lungs, accompanied by thrombi in major blood vessels of the lungs and hind limbs. Histologically, pyogranulomatous inflammation was evident in many tissues, and fungal organisms were seen in sections of mammary gland, skin, subcutis, pericardium, and lung. Blastomyces dermatitidis was cultured from mammary tissue, lungs, lymph node, and an inguinal abscess. Although blastomycosis is endemic in the area of origin of the mare in northwestern Wisconsin, the disease is extremely rare in horses and hence easily misdiagnosed. Unique features of this case included the extent of mammary gland involvement and the presence of thrombi in multiple sites.  相似文献

Paranasal meningioma was diagnosed in a 5-year-old Appaloosa gelding. The mass occupied the right maxillary, frontal, and sphenopalatine sinuses but did not invade the calvarium. The diagnosis was based on histologic evaluation, positive immunohistochemical staining for vimentin and cytokeratin, and ultrastructural features including the presence of interdigitating spindle cells with numerous desmosomes.  相似文献

Venous aneurysm was diagnosed in a 3-year-old horse, using contrast radiography and acid-base analysis of blood samples taken simultaneously from the right jugular vein and a swelling in the right mandibular angle. Attempted surgical correction was followed by rupture of the right maxillary vein. Hemorrhagic shock developed, and the horse died.  相似文献
