The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of dietary ribonucleic acid (RNA) on the performance of European sea bass juveniles. Two diets containing fish meal as the only nitrogen source were formulated with 39% or 50% of crude protein (LP and HP diet, respectively). Two other diets were formulated similarly to LP diet, but included yeast-RNA extract at 6.2% and 12.4% levels (LP6 and LP12 diets, respectively) by replacing dextrin. Total nitrogen content of the LP12 diet was equivalent to that of the HP diet. The four experimental diets were isoenergetic (22 kJ GE g−1 DM). Triplicate groups of 25 fish (IBW=13 g) were fed the test diets for 10 weeks. The reduction of dietary protein level did not significantly affect growth rate but significantly increased feed intake and decreased feed efficiency. However, nitrogen retention (%N intake) was significantly improved with the decrease in dietary protein level. Dietary RNA incorporation did not affect feed intake or feed efficiency, although it reduced growth rate of fish fed the highest dietary RNA level. Nitrogen retention (%N intake) significantly decreased with the dietary supplementation of RNA. Dry matter, nitrogen and energy digestibilities were not significantly affected by dietary treatments. Final whole-body composition was also unaffected by dietary treatments, except for ash content which was significantly higher in the LP12 group. Hepatosomatic index was significantly increased by the dietary incorporation of RNA. The dietary supplementation of RNA had no protein sparing effect and significantly reduced energy retention. It may be concluded that dietary RNA supplementation had no nutritive value for European sea bass.

An experiment was performed to evaluate the growth performance and feed utilization of white sea bream juveniles (initial weight, 14 g) fed diets of cornstarch of different origins (normal and waxy). Four experimental diets were formulated to be isolipidic and to contain normal and waxy starch (26% or 42%) at two protein (36% and 48%) levels. The growth trial lasted 15 weeks and, at the end of the trial, there were no differences in the growth rate among groups. At the highest dietary starch level – but not at the lowest level – the feed efficiency ratio and PER were significantly lower in fish fed the waxy starch diet. Protein efficiency ratio and N retention (% N intake) were not affected by starch source but were significantly higher in the diets with a lower protein content. No differences in energy retention (% energy intake) were observed among groups. Except for the protein content, which was significantly higher in fish fed diets with a high protein level, no other differences were observed among groups in whole‐body composition. Hepatosomatic Index (HSI) was significantly higher in fish fed high‐starch diets, but there were no differences in visceral indices among groups. The apparent digestibility coefficients of protein and energy were not affected by the dietary starch level, but were significantly lower in diets including waxy starch. Glutamate dehydrogenase activity was higher in fish fed high‐protein diets, but it was not affected by dietary starch source. Alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase activities were not different among groups. Glucose 6‐phosphate dehydrogenase, malic enzyme and fatty acid synthetase activities were not affected by the dietary starch level, but were significantly lower in fish fed waxy starch. The results of this study indicate that diets for white sea bream juveniles may include up to 42% starch without negative effects on fish performance. Moreover, normal starch appears to be more efficiently used as an energy source than waxy starch.

The effect of dietary digestible protein/digestible energy (DP/DE) ratios and feeding level on growth, feed efficiency, nutrient and energy usage by Atlantic salmon ( Salmo salar ; initial body weight, 7.0 g/fish) at 15°C was investigated in a 16-week feeding trial. Three diets, differing in their DP and DE contents, namely 37/18 (regular diet, RD), 37/21 (high fat diet, HF) and 44/ 22 (high nutrient-dense diet, HND) g/MJ of dry feed were formulated. DP/DE ratios were 20, 18 and 20 g/MJ for the RD, HF and HND diets, respectively. Salmon were hand-fed three times a day at either 100% or 85% of the feed requirement estimated by a bioenergetics model. At each feeding level, DE intake (kJ/fish) was similar for all three diets. Diet composition did not affect growth rate. However, increasing the digestible energy density from 18 to 22 MJ/kg of dry feed resulted in a significant increase ( P  < 0.05) in feed efficiency. Restricting feed intake significantly decreased live body weight gains for all diets. However, feed efficiency was not affected by feeding level. Diet composition and feeding level did not affect carcass composition and nutrient and energy usage, with the exception of a higher ( P  < 0.05) carcass lipid of fish fed the HF100 diet compared with the fish fed the RD and HND diets and a higher ( P  < 0.05) lipid gain (g/fish) of fish fed the HF100 diet compared with fish fed all the diets at the restricted feeding level. Restricting feeding resulted in significantly lower ( P  < 0.05) energy gain (kJ/fish) compared with fish fed at 100%. Increasing the DE and nutrient density of the diet had no effect on growth but improved feed efficiency and lowered solid wastes (g of solid wastes per kg of fish produced) while dissolved wastes were not affected by dietary ormulation.

High energy extruded diets were formulated to contain the same level of protein supplied either by soy protein concentrate (SPC) or fish meal. Three experiments were performed in order to measure voluntary feed intake and feed waste, faecal losses and soluble losses of nitrogen and phosphorus in rainbow trout (average body weight: 100 g). Voluntary feed intake and growth performance of fish fed with demand feeders were not different when diets contained 0, 50 or 75 % SPC instead of fish meal. Total replacement of fish meal by SPC led to a significant decrease in feed intake and resulted in poor growth. This was partly due to methionine deficiency in the SPC based diet. With the addition of crystalline DL-methionine in the diets, an improvement of feed intake and growth performance was apparent. Protein digestibility was high, regardless of the protein source. Excretion of ammonia and urea increased with the level of SPC in the diet. Nitrogen losses decreased when methionine was added to the diet containing only SPC as a protein source. Availability of phosphorus increased with the level of SPC in the diets. Daily soluble losses were not affected by the dietary treatments but the pattern of phosphorus excretion after feed intake was modified. The rise in soluble phosphorus in water occurred later when fish were fed diets with soy protein whatever the dietary level of soy protein concentrate.

Dietary Threonine Requirement of Juvenile Red Drum Sciaenops ocellatus
Threonine is an indispensable amino acid required by all animals for normal growth and metabolic functions. An experiment was conducted in a brackish water (5 ± 1 ppt) recirculating system to quantify the minimum dietary threonine requirement of juvenile red drum Sciaenops ocellatus . The experimental diets contained 350/0 crude protein from red drum muscle and crystalline amino acids and 3.2 kcal available energy/g diet. Incremental levels of L-threonine were added to the diets and fed to juvenile red drum initially averaging 2.8 g/fish for 8 wk. Weight gain and feed efficiency of fish fed the various diets were significantly ( P < 0.05) affected and increased linearly as dietary threonine increased until plateauing around 0.8% of dry diet. Protein efficiency ratio and protein conversion efficiency values for fish fed the different diets also were significantly affected by threonine level and indicated requirement values of 0.8–0.9% of dry diet. Free threonine in plasma also significantly responded to increasing dietary threonine but indicated a slightly higher requirement value of approximately 1.0% of dry diet. Based on these data, the minimum threonine requirement of juvenile red drum was determined to be approximately 0.8% of dry diet (2.28% of dietary protein). This requirement level is similar to values reported for some other fish species. Based on this information diets may be formulated more precisely for aquacultural production of red drum.

饲料LA、LB、LC和LD含24%鱼粉,并分别添加0.5% A、1.3%B、1.3%C或1.3%D;饲料HA、HB、HC和HD含8%鱼粉,并分别添加0.7% A、1.8% B、1.8% C或1.8% D。

An 8‐week feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of replacing fish meal with soybean meal (SBM) on growth, feed utilization, and nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) excretion of juvenile Pseudobagrus ussuriensis (initial average weight 0.50 ± 0.00 g). Seven isonitrogenous and isolipidic diets were formulated to contain SBM to replace fish meal protein at 0% (S0), 10% (S10), 20% (S20), 30% (S30), 40% (S40), 50% (S50) and 60% (S60) respectively. To investigate the effects of supplementation with crystalline amino acid to balance diet S60, one diet was formulated to add 0.30% methionine (SM60). The results showed that there was no significant difference in weight gain among fish fed S0, S10, S20, S30 and S40 diets, however, a significant reduction in this variable occurred when 50% and 60% of fish meal protein was replaced by SBM (P < 0.05). Apparent digestibility coefficients of dry matter, crude protein and phosphorus of diets were affected by dietary SBM levels. N and P excretion indicate that fish meal replacement by SBM led to an increase in N excretion, but led to a reduction in P excretion. No differences were detected in growth, feed utilization and N and P excretion between fish feed diets S60 and SM60. The results of this study show that 40% of fish meal protein could be replaced by SBM in diets of juvenile P. ussuriensis without having a significant negative effect on growth or feed efficiency, but that higher dietary SBM levels reduce fish performance.

Abstract.— This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of dietary protein concentration and an all‐plant diet on growth and processing yield of pond‐raised channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus. Four diets were formulated using plant and animal proteins to contain 24%n, 28%, 32%, or 36% crude protein with digestible energy to protein (DE/P) ratios of 11.7, 10.2, 9.0, and 8.1 kcal/g, respectively. An all‐plant diet containing 28% protein with a DE/P ratio of 10.2 kcal/g was also included. Channel catfish fingerlings averaging 40 g/fish were stocked into 24, 0.04‐ha ponds at a density of 18,530 fish/ha. Five ponds were used for each dietary treatment except for the all‐plant diet which had four replicates. The fish were fed once daily to apparent satiation for 160 d. No differences were observed in feed consumption, weight gain, survival, carcass and nugget yield, or fillet moisture and protein concentrations among treatments. Fish fed the 28% protein diet had a lower feed conversion ratio (FCR) than fish fed diets containing 24% and 32% protein, but had a FCR similar to fish fed the 36% protein diet. Fillet yield was higher for fish fed the 36% protein diet than fish fed the 24% protein diet. Visceral fat was lower in fish fed the 36% protein diet than fish fed other diets. Fish fed the 32% and 36% protein diets exhibited a lower level of fillet fat than fish fed the 24% protein diet. The 36% protein diet resulted in a lower level of fillet fat than fish fed the 28% protein diet. There was a positive linear regression in fillet yield and fillet moisture concentration and a negative linear regression in visceral fat and fillet fat against dietary protein concentration. No differences in any variables were noted between the 28% protein diets with and without animal protein except that fish fed the 28% protein diet without animal protein had a higher FCR than fish fed the 28% protein diet with animal protein. This observation did not appear to be diet related since FCR of fish fed the 32% protein diet containing animal protein was not different from that of fish fed the 28% all‐plant protein diet. Data from the present study indicate that dietary protein concentrations ranging from 24% to 36% provided for similar feed consumption, growth, feed efficiency, and carcass yield. However, since there is a general increase in fattiness and a decrease in fillet yield as the dietary protein concentration decreases or DEP ratio increases, it is suggested that a minimum of 28% dietary protein with a maximum DEIP ratio of 10 kcal/g protein is optimal for channel catfish growout.

Optimum dietary protein and lipid levels for juvenile rockfish were determined. Eight hundred and ten juvenile fish averaging 3.22 g were randomly chosen and distributed into 27 flow‐through tanks of 50 L (30 fish per tank). Nine experimental diets were prepared according to a 3 × 3 factorial experimental design: three crude protein levels (45%, 50% and 55%) × three crude lipid levels (11%, 15% and 19%). Crude protein and crude lipid levels increased at the expense of dextrin and cellulose in the experimental diets. Survival of fish was not affected by either dietary protein or lipid level. Weight gain of fish was affected by dietary protein level, but not by dietary lipid level. Weight gain of fish fed the 50P‐15L (50% protein and 15% lipid) diet was higher than that of fish fed the 45% protein diets regardless of lipid level, but not different from that of fish fed the 50P‐11L (50% protein and 11% lipid), 50P‐19L (50% protein and 19% lipid), 55P‐11L (55% protein and 11% lipid), 55P‐15L (55% protein and 15% lipid) and 55P‐19L (55% protein and 19% lipid) diets. Feed consumption of fish was affected by dietary protein level, but not by dietary lipid levels. Feed efficiency ratio (FER) of fish was affected by dietary protein level, but not by dietary lipid level. Protein efficiency ratio (PER) of fish was affected by dietary protein level, but not by dietary lipid level. Nitrogen retention efficiency (NRE) of fish fed the 45P‐19L diet was higher than that of fish fed the 45P‐11L, 50P‐11L, 50P‐15L, 50P‐19L, 55P‐11L, 55P‐15L and 55P‐19L diets, but not different from that of fish fed the 45P‐15L diet. Moisture, crude protein and crude lipid contents of fish was affected by dietary protein and/or lipid level. Plasma triglyceride of fish was affected by dietary lipid level, but not by dietary protein level. In conclusion, optimum protein and lipid levels for growth and feed utilization (PER and NRE) for juvenile rockfish were 50% and 15%, and 45% and 19%, respectively, and the optimum dietary protein‐to‐energy ratio of 27.4 and 23.9 mg protein kJ?1.

The effect of varying dietary lipid and n‐3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) on growth, feed efficiency, protein and energy utilization, carcass quality, and nonspecific immune functions was investigated in rainbow trout reared at two different water temperatures (7.5 and 15 C). Six diets were formulated to contain 47% digestible protein and 21 MJ/kg digestible energy. Three of the diets were formulated to contain increasing lipid levels (10, 16, and 18%) and three additional diets formulated to 18% lipid with different lipid sources. Varying dietary lipid and n‐3 PUFA levels had little effect on growth and on protein and energy utilization. Diet composition only had limited effect on susceptibility of the flesh to rancidity and on the nonspecific immunity of the fish. Increasing lipid levels did not affect fish carcass or fillet proximate composition. Replacing half of fish oil with beef tallow resulted in lower n‐3 PUFAs in fish fillet but did not affect nutrient digestibility or growth performance of fish even at 7.5 C. Increasing dietary n‐3 levels using a fish oil concentrate resulted in significant enrichment of n‐3 PUFAs and elevated n‐3 : n‐6 ratio of the whole body and carcass. Water temperature significantly affected apparent digestibility coefficient (ADC) of protein and energy but did not affect the ADC of lipid, nor did it affect nitrogen and energy retention efficiencies. The study suggests that highly saturated fats, such as beef tallow, can be used to partially replace fish oil without negative effect on digestibility and growth even at low water temperature. High dietary n‐3 PUFAs levels can be used to enrich n‐3 PUFAs of the flesh without negative effect on the immune response.

A net pen experiment was carried out to examine the effect of dietary protein level on the potential of land animal protein ingredients as fish meal substitutes in practical diets for cuneate drum Nibea miichthioides. Two isocaloric basal (control) diets were formulated to contain 400 g kg?1 herring meal but two different digestible protein (DP) levels (400 versus 350 g kg?1). At each DP level, dietary fish meal level was reduced from 400 to 280, 200, 80 and 0 g kg?1 by incorporating a blend that comprised of 600 g kg?1 poultry by‐products meal (PBM), 200 g kg?1 meat and bone meal (MBM), 100 g kg?1 feather meal (FEM) and 100 g kg?1 blood meal (BLM). Cuneate drum fingerling (initial weight 42 g fish?1) were fed the test diets for 8 weeks. Fish fed the test diets exhibited similar feed intake. Final body weight, feed conversion ratio and nitrogen retention efficiency was not significantly different between fish fed the basal diets containing 350 and 400 g kg?1 DP. Weight gain decreased linearly with the reduction of dietary fish meal level at the 350 g kg?1 DP level, but did not decrease with the reduction of dietary fish meal level at the 400 g kg?1 DP level. Results of the present study suggest that fish meal in cuneate drum diets can be completely replaced with the blend of PBM, MBM, FEM and BLM at the 400 g kg?1 DP level, based on a mechanism that excessive dietary protein compensate lower contents of bio‐available essential amino acid in the land animal protein ingredients relative to fish meal.

The present experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary protein to carbohydrate ratios on growth and body composition of juvenile yellow catfish, Pelteobagrus fulvidraco . Nine diets were formulated to contain three protein levels (30%, 36% and 42%), each with three carbohydrate levels (24%, 30% and 36%). Each diet was randomly assigned to triplicate groups of 20 fish (initial mean body weight: 8.24±0.20 g) in indoor flow – through fibreglass tanks. The experiment continued for 8 weeks. Weight gain and specific growth rate were similar for the fish fed the 36% and 42% protein diets but higher than that fed the 30% protein diet. At the 36% protein level, carbohydrate contents varying from 24% to 36% ( P / E ratio of 24.0–28.2 mg protein kJ−1) had no significant effects on growth performance and feed utilization ( P >0.05). Protein efficiency ratio tended to increase with dietary carbohydrate level at the same protein level. Dietary treatments significantly influenced body composition ( P <0.05), but not the condition factor, viscerosomatic index, hepatosomatic index and intraperitoneal fat ratio ( P >0.05). Based on these observations, 36% protein and 24–36% carbohydrate with the P / E ratio of 24.0–28.2 mg protein kJ−1 seemed suitable for optimal growth and feed utilization, and carbohydrate could cause protein-sparing effect in diets for juvenile yellow catfish.

Six diets were formulated to contain corn starch, tapioca starch, or dextrin at 10% and 20% inclusion levels and fed to humpback grouper fingerlings to apparent satiation for 10 weeks. Growth and feed utilization efficiency of humpback grouper were not affected by dietary carbohydrate source and level. Only slightly higher growth was observed in fish fed 20% dietary carbohydrate compared to the fish fed 10% carbohydrate irrespective of carbohydrate source. Body indices and whole body proximate composition of fish in the present study were generally independent of diet, except that muscle lipid of fish fed diets with 7.6% lipid and 20% carbohydrate was significantly lower than the other groups. In view of the lower price and local availability of tapioca starch compared to corn starch and dextrin, tapioca starch is the preferred source of starch in practical diets for humpback grouper.

The possible benefits of feeding a formulated diet, together with Artemia , to first-feeding turbot larvae were investigated. Five dietary regimes were used: control ( Artemia only), cofeeding with a diet rich in phospholipid (PL) from bovine brain, cofeeding with a diet rich in free fatty acids (FFA) from the same source, cofeeding with a commercial diet (Lansy A2), and a formulated feed only (PL-rich diet). All treatments with artificial diets and the control treatment that received Artemia exclusively gave a similar survival rate of the fish at day 29. Cofeeding with artificial diets resulted in a lower growth rate than the control treatment. Cofeeding the larvae with PL-rich or FFA-rich diets did not affect the pigmentation or resistance to salt stress of the larvae. Complete substitution of Artemia by the phosholipid diets from day 20, however, resulted in severe stress and pigmentation problems. Cofeeding might have interesting features for application since it may reduce the amount and cost of live food and also offer to the fish larvae essential nutrients that are not contained in sufficient amounts in the (enriched) live food.

A study was undertaken to determine the dietary protein level for optimal growth performance and body composition of juvenile Senegalese sole. Five experimental extruded diets were formulated to contain increasing levels of protein [430, 480, 530, 570 and 600 g kg?1 dry matter (DM)] and a constant lipid level, ranging from 100 to 130 g kg?1 DM. Triplicate groups of 35 sole (initial body weight: 11.9 ± 0.5 g) were grown over 84 days in 60‐L tanks supplied with recirculated seawater. Fish were fed by means of automatic feeders in eight meals per day. At the start and end of the trial, whole‐body samples were withdrawn for proximate composition analysis. At the end of 84 days of experimental feeding, daily weight gain and specific growth rate in fish fed diets P43 and P48 were significantly lower than those found in fish fed higher protein level diets (P53, P57 and P59). Similarly, feed efficiency was also significantly lower in fish fed diet P43 than in fish fed all other dietary treatments. Sole juveniles fed lower protein level diets (P43 and P48) showed a significantly lower protein content than fish fed the higher dietary protein level treatments (P53, P57 and P60). Changes within the tested dietary protein levels did not affect significantly protein productive value or total nitrogen (N) losses in fish. However, daily N gain was significantly higher (P < 0.05) in fish fed diets P53 and P60 than in fish fed the lowest protein level diet (P43). Data from the present study indicate that diets for juvenile Senegalese sole should include at least 53% crude protein to maintain a good overall growth performance. Based on a second‐order polynomial regression model, the daily crude protein requirement for maximum whole‐body N gain as estimated here for Senegalese sole juveniles was 6.43 g kg?1 body weight day?1 which corresponds to a value of 1.03 g N intake kg?1 body weight day?1. If the present data are expressed on a dietary crude protein concentration basis, the allowance for maximum protein accretion (N gain) would be met by a diet containing a crude protein level of 600 g kg?1.

This study was conducted to investigate the influence of dietary lipid level and supplemental soy lecithin on growth, feed utilization and body composition of juvenile flounder reared at two suboptimal water temperatures, 12 and 17 °C. Three isonitrogenous (CP 50%) diets containing 1% squid liver oil (S7), 7% squid liver oil (S14), and a mixture of 2% soy lecithin and 5% squid liver oil (SL14) were formulated to obtain 7% and 14% of crude lipid. Triplicate groups of fish (6.3 ± 0.2 g) were fed to apparent satiation twice a day for 60 days. Weight gain, daily feed intake, feed efficiency and protein efficiency ratio were significantly higher for fish reared at 17 °C than at 12 °C. Daily feed intake was significantly decreased with the increase of dietary lipid level at the same water temperature, but weight gain was not affected by dietary lipid composition. At 12 °C, feed efficiency and protein efficiency ratio were significantly higher for fish fed the S14 and SL14 diets than those of fish fed the S7 diet, while at 17 °C feed efficiency and protein efficiency ratio of fish fed the S14 diet, which were not significantly different from those of fish fed the SL14 diet, were significantly higher than those of fish fed the S7 diet. There were no significant effects of dietary lipid composition or temperature range on the whole body contents of moisture, crude protein, lipid or ash. Dietary lipid composition and temperature affected the fatty acid content of the polar lipid from the liver; and the n-3HUFA contents such as 20:5n-3 and 20:6n-3 were higher at 12 °C than at 17 °C. The results of this study indicate that an increase of dietary lipid level from 7% to 14% has beneficial effects on feed utilization of flounder when reared in suboptimal water temperatures. The increase of water temperature from 12 to 17 °C improved growth and feed utilization, but 2% soy lecithin had no substantial effect on growth and feed efficiency of juvenile flounder.

A large-scale trial of the effect of different commercial diets on the incidence of preclinical spinal deformation, as assessed by radiography, and the influence of two contrasting rearing systems was carried out. Two sets of three populations of Atlantic salmon, each of 20 000 first feeding fry of identical hatchery origin, created from equal numbers of eggs from 15 different families, were reared under commercial conditions on two different farms. Three commercial (closed formula) extruded fish meal-based diets were used in this study (diets A, B & C). Each diet was fed to one population of 20 000 fish at each site. Fish were fed a percentage of their body weight per day, with feeding rates set at commercial levels, based on water temperature, day length and fish biomass. Additional hand feeding was used to ensure satiation in all tanks. Fish in each tank were bulk-weighed and counted at the beginning and at 2-week intervals throughout the study. The fish were grown for 30 weeks. In addition, phosphorus (P) digestibility was evaluated by in-feed absorption testing in rainbow trout. The morphology of the radiographic lesions conformed to those described previously. Statistical analysis using multivariate regression analysis showed that date of sampling, site and diet were all statistically significant (P < 0.001) on univariable analysis. Farm A had significantly more affected fish than farm B (P < 0.001), which may have been attributable to variation in dissolved oxygen levels. The available dietary P levels were low in each diet. The number of fish affected in the group of fish being fed diet B was significantly lower than in the groups being fed diets A or C (P < 0.001). It appears most likely that the occurrence of preclinical radiographically apparent defects in parr which are believed to lead to the condition known as 'spinal deformity' is predominantly caused by a deficiency of available dietary P in first-feeding fry. The availability of dietary P may also vary considerably between diets formulated using different ingredients. Phytate-P associated with plant ingredients may affect the availability of P as well as other essential dietary nutrients. Additionally, diets for the production of salmonids in fresh water are currently formulated to keep P effluent to a minimum compatible with healthy spinal development. These various factors combine to make it crucial that small Atlantic salmon, especially first-feeding fry, are provided with carefully formulated diets fortified to an adequate level with a high quality source of available P.

With the fast development of aquaculture, fish meal needs increased in recent years, however the quantity of fish catching decreases gradually. Fishmeal is a limited feed resource, and serious concem exists on the future availability of this feedstuff for incorporation in fish diets. Undoubtedly, fish meal is well recognized as the best dietary protein source for most marine carnivorous fishes which required high dietary protein levels compared to omnivorous or herbivorous fish. Fishmeal is known for their high content of essential amino acids and fatty acids, low carbohydrates, high digestibility, low levels of anti-nutritional factors (for fresh fish meal) and is a very good source of minerals and is highly palatable. Thus fish meal is in high demand as the protein source for many formulated diets. However, production of fish meal consumes approximately 35 % of the total global fish catch, and the increasing price and potentially unstable supply in the market could be limiting factors for marine fish culture. There have been strong efforts to define and develop cost-effective protein sources that can, at least partly, substitute for expensive high-quality fish meals in least-cost feed formulations. The search for fish meal substitutes and altemative dietary protein sources is an international research priority that could be of considerable economic advantages. Therefore it is urgent task to find animal and plant protein sources in place of fish meal. Among these, plant feedstuffs have received most attention in recent years, but due to their amino acid unbalances, .presence of anti-nutritional factors and low palatability, a high level of replacement of fish meal with plant feedstuffs in omnivorous fish is generally not well accepted. This paper reviews the research status for other protein sources replacing fish meal based on available information in the literature. Animal and plant protein sources nutrient values are evaluated from the aspect of digestibility, antinutrients, physiological status and suitable supplementation.
