Objective— Biomechanical analysis of acute load to failure (ALF) of 3 veterinary and 1 human suture anchor and cyclic load to failure with two suture material/suture anchor constructs in canine femoral condyles.
Study Design— Biomechanical in vitro study.
Sample Population— Cadaveric femora from 20–30 kg dogs.
Methods— Three veterinary and 1 human suture anchor were placed in the cranial and caudal aspects of the femoral condyle and subjected to 0° ALF. Anchors were loaded with 5 USP Fiberwire or 27 kg test nylon leader line (NLL) and subjected to 90° cyclic testing for 10,000 cycles followed by ALF at 90°.
Results— No significant difference in ALF for any anchor type was detected in the cranial aspect of the femoral condyle; however all veterinary anchors had higher ALF in the caudal aspect of the femoral condyle. In cyclic testing, the constructs in descending order (most cycles to least) were: (1) FlexiTwist/NLL, (2) Securos/Fiberwire, Securos/NLL, (3) IMEX/Fiberwire, IMEX/NLL, and (4) FlexiTwist/Fiberwire, Fastin/Fiberwire. Fiberwire was significantly stronger than NLL in post-cycling ALF testing.
Conclusions— Veterinary anchors had higher ALF in the caudal versus cranial aspect of the femoral condyle. Except for the FlexiTwist in which NLL performed better, Fiberwire and NLL both had similar cyclic performance with each veterinary anchor type. The veterinary anchors exceeded the human anchor in ALF and cycles to failure.
Clinical Relevance— The tested veterinary suture anchors with Fiberwire or NLL may be used in the femoral condyle, preferably in the caudal aspect, and should withstand estimated loading conditions in appropriately confined postoperative canine patients.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To describe a modified 3-loop pulley suture pattern for the reattachment of canine tendons to bone along with a biomechanical comparison with the locking-loop suture. STUDY DESIGN: In vitro biomechanical study and clinical case report. ANIMALS OR SAMPLE POPULATION: Biomechanical study: 10 paired gastrocnemius tendons and calcaneii harvested from 5 canine cadavers. Case report: a Doberman with avulsion of the gastrocnemius tendon of insertion. METHODS: Biomechanical study: paired tendons were reattached to the calcaneus with either a modified 3-loop pulley pattern or a locking-loop pattern. Tensile loading to failure was performed. A direct, non-contact, method of gap measurement, using digital video, was used to measure gap formation. Load required to initiate gap formation (defined as load at a 1 mm gap) and to produce a 3 mm gap was evaluated in addition to maximum load and gap at failure. RESULTS: Mean (+/-SEM) 1 mm gap loads were 31.0+/-4.2 and 17.2+/-2.5 N, mean 3 mm gap loads were 49.1+/-2.4 and 28.9+/-3.2 N, and mean maximum loads were 72.9+/-4.3 and 55.8+/-2.2 N for the modified 3-loop pulley suture and the locking-loop suture, respectively. These differences were statistically significant (P<.05). The gap at failure was similar for both repairs. The clinical case remained sound 7 months postoperatively. CONCLUSIONS: A modified 3-loop pulley pattern is biomechanically superior to a locking-loop pattern for reattachment of the canine gastrocnemius tendon to bone and may be suitable for clinical use. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Tendon repairs with a gap >3 mm are reported to be at increased risk of rupture during the first 6 weeks postoperatively. A modified 3-loop pulley pattern resists gap formation better than a locking-loop pattern.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effect of abduction suture tension and cricothyroid (CT) joint disarticulation on the area, height, and width of the rima glottidis (RG) during unilateral arytenoid lateralization. STUDY DESIGN: Experimental study. ANIMALS: Nine canine cadaver larynges. METHODS: Left arytenoid lateralization was performed with high or low abduction suture tension. RG area, height, and width were measured by computerized planimetric analysis with the epiglottis in an open and closed position. The experiment was performed with the CT joint intact and disarticulated. The effects of suture tension, CT disarticulation, and their interaction on RG area with the epiglottis closed or open were evaluated by repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA). RESULTS: RG area increased by 82% and 129% (P <.0001) with low and high suture tension, respectively. The aperture not covered by the epiglottis in a closed position was 467% larger with high suture tension than with low tension (P <.0001). CT disarticulation had no significant effect on RG geometry with either low or high suture tension (P =.4970). CONCLUSIONS: Low suture tension increased RG area when the epiglottis was in an open position without increasing RG aperture when the epiglottis was closed. Suture tension had a significant effect on RG opening when the epiglottis was closed. CT disarticulation did not modify the geometry of the RG. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Use of a low-suture tension should be considered during arytenoid lateralization because it has the potential to reduce the risk of aspiration pneumonia.  相似文献

The effects of various preparation and storage procedures and of different storage times on structural properties of canine cortical bone allografts were determined by evaluation of the compressive load to failure of a whole diaphyseal segment, the ability of a screw to resist being pulled from a cortical segment, and the torque required to strip the threads of a screw hole in a cortical segment. Preparation and storage procedures evaluated were sterile collection and storage at -20 C; ethylene oxide sterilization and storage at room temperature (22 C); chemical sterilization (methanol and chloroform, then iodoacetic acid) and storage at -20 C; and chemical sterilization, partial decalcification, and storage at -20 C. Storage times were 1, 16, and 32 weeks for each procedure. After 1 week of storage, aseptically collected frozen bone and ethylene oxide-sterilized bone had an increase, compared with matched controls, in load to failure in compression, but pullout load or screw-stripping torque did not change. Chemically sterilized bone had not changed after 1 week of storage, whereas chemically sterilized and partially decalcified bone had a 40% to 60% decrease in compressive load to failure, pullout load, and screw-stripping torque. Chemically sterilized and partially decalcified bone remained weak after 16 and 32 weeks of storage. Significant structural alterations were not detected in aseptically collected bone after 16 or 32 weeks of storage. Ethylene oxide-sterilized bone had a reduced pullout load after 32 weeks of storage. Chemically sterilized bone had significantly reduced compressive load to failure and pullout load after 16 and 32 weeks of storage.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To compare ease of insertion, load to failure, and mode of failure of cortical and cancellous screws, BoneBiter, IMEX, and TwinFix suture anchors in canine metaphyseal tibial bone. STUDY DESIGN: Experimental biomechanical study. ANIMALS: Canine cadaveric tibias. METHODS: One investigator inserted all anchors and subjectively evaluated ease of placement. Anchor systems were loaded to failure along axis of insertion with audio-video recording to determine failure mode. RESULTS: BoneBiter was the most difficult anchor to insert successfully. Mean+/-SD loads to failure were cancellous screw (711+/-193 N), IMEX 4.7 mm 18 g wire (661+/-163 N), IMEX 4.0 mm 18 g wire (661+/-165 N), cortical screw (635+/-184 N), BoneBiter #5 Kevlar suture (393+/- 109 N), and TwinFix 5.0 mm #2 polyester (267+/-73 N). No significant differences were noted among the cortical screw, cancellous screw, IMEX 4.7 and 4.0 mm, all of which were significantly (P<.001) greater than BoneBiter and TwinFix . Failure modes were pullout of bone, suture-wire breakage, eyelet breakage, or no failure to 1000 N: screws (18,0,0,2), IMEX (18,1,1,0), BoneBiter (2,8,0,0), and TwinFix (0,10,0,0). CONCLUSIONS: Fixation devices were user friendly, with the exception of BoneBiter. Mode of failure is dependent on suture material and anchor design. Cortical and cancellous screws, and IMEX anchors with 18 g wire have significantly greater load to failure compared with BoneBiter and TwinFix suture anchors. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Based on load to failure, ease of use, design characteristics, and cost, IMEX anchors may have advantages over other comparable soft tissue fixation devices.  相似文献

Objectives : An association between heart rate (HR) and bodyweight has been reported in dogs and it is common belief that small breeds of dog exhibit higher HR than large breeds. The first aim of this study was to test the null hypothesis that, in veterinary clinical practice, bodyweight does not affect HR measured in healthy dogs. A second objective of this investigation was to assess whether other variables, such as gender, breed morphology, age and demeanour, may have a significant effect on dog’s HR measured in a clinical setting. Methods : The investigation was performed via two different studies: a retrospective analysis performed on 243 electrocardiogram recordings and a prospective study based on 153 standardised clinical examinations. Results : The two separate studies did not show any significant correlation between HR and bodyweight (P=0·5705 and P=0·4682, respectively). Subject’s breed morphology and gender did not appear to affect HR measured under these circumstances. However, dogs under the age of one year seem to have significantly higher HRs than older dogs (P < 0·05). Finally, subject’s demeanour was also found to have a significant influence on HR; lower values were recorded in relaxed dogs, and higher rates were documented in excited, nervous dogs (P < 0·05). Clinical Significance : Normal HR could be erroneously interpreted as bradycardia or tachycardia if bodyweight was to be considered a determinant factor. Instead, HR in healthy dogs undergoing routine clinical examination is related to their demeanour or age, if younger than 12 months, but does not appear to be related to bodyweight.  相似文献

Sixteen-month-old heifers from herds having known genetic growth patterns were compared for differences in grazing behavior in a 3-yr study. Treatments were heifers from four size-maturity groups defined by the mature size and maturing rate of cow herds in which they originated. Average growth curve parameters indicating mature BW and rate of maturing in these cow herds were 387 kg and .19%/d for treatment Group I; 413 kg and .18%/d for Group II; 468 kg and .15%/d for Group III; and 589 kg and .16%/d for treatment Group IV. Data were from three heifers per treatment group grazing Midland bermudagrass during June and July observation periods. With the exception of the Group II vs Group III comparison, bite size increased with current or mature BW. Biting rate values were similar for all treatment groups but lower than those previously reported on other grass swards. Grazing time increased (P less than .01) in treatment groups defined by larger mature BW. Differences in grazing time for Group IV vs the other treatments and Group I vs Group II and Group III were observed repeatedly; the Group II vs Group III comparison was significant in one period during each of the 3 yr. Diurnal variations in grazing patterns among the treatments were observed. Period of observation affected (P less than .001) bite size and grazing time. These effects were not associated with month but could best be explained by differences in forage height and total mass. Forage availability had a direct influence on bite size, and a compensating effect of longer grazing time with smaller bite size was demonstrated as a regulator of intake. Differences in ingestive behavior were associated with genetic growth patterns in cattle.  相似文献

Ten healthy, young, adult mongrel dogs were given sodium iothalamate at dose levels of 200, 400, and 800 mg of iodine/0.45 kg of body weight on separate occasions by rapid IV injection; urinary bladders of the dogs were empty before injections were begun. Seven of the ten dogs were given an additional dose of sodium iothalamate (400 mg of iodine/0.45 kg) with the bladder partially distended with sterilized saline solution. Ventrodorsal abdominal radiographs were obtained immediately and at 5, 10, 20, 40, 60, and 120 minutes after injection of contrast medium. The kidneys, renal pelves, pelvic diverticula, and ureters were evaluated for radiographic density (radiopacity). The lengths and widths of the kidneys, pelves, and diverticula and the width of the ureters were determined, and those measurements were standardized by dividing the values by the corresponding length of the second lumbar vertebral body. From these evaluations, it was determined that postinjection radiographs should be obtained immediately and at 5, 20, and 40 minutes. The optimal dose of contrast medium was 400 mg of iodine/0.45 kg of body weight. It was also determined that the dose of contrast medium, as well as the time of postinjection radiography, significantly influenced many of the measurements (both linear and density) in the excretory urogram of normal dogs. Values for the measurements of the urinary structures based on the results of the present study are also presented.  相似文献

Ewes from lines selected for high and low reproductive rate and a control line bred and selected randomly were endoscopically examined 3 to 5 d after breeding to determine ovulation rates in the fall of 1985, 1986 and 1987. Fertility (ewes lambing per ewe exposed), lambing rate (lambs born per ewe exposed) and litter size (lambs born per ewe lambing) were evaluated at lambing in the spring of each year. Embryonic survival was estimated as the number of lambs born per corpora lutea. Ovulation rates were 1.28, 1.73 and 1.46 for low, high and control lines, respectively. More (P less than .01) single ovulations occurred in low-line ewes than in the other two lines; high-line ewes had more (P less than .01) twin ovulations than did low- or control-line ewes. Fertility did not differ among lines. Selection line affected (P less than .01) lambing rate at first and all services. Control-line ewes had mean lambing rates at first and all services that were intermediate between those of the low and high lines, which were different from each other. Line x age of ewe interactions existed (P less than .01) for lambing rate at all services and litter size at first and all services. High-line ewes had lower lambing rates and litter sizes as 2-yr-olds than other lines, but their performance increased steadily to 6-yr-olds, whereas the low and control lines remained relatively constant. Embryo survival differed (P less than .10) between lines, being 74%, 63% and 67% for low, high and control lines, respectively.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Continuous rate infusion (CRI) of furosemide in humans is considered superior to intermittent administration (IA). This study examined whether furosemide CRI, compared with IA, would increase diuretic efficacy with decreased fluid and electrolyte fluctuations and activation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) in the horse. Five mares were used in a crossover-design study. During a 24-hour period, each horse received a total of 3 mg/kg furosemide by either CRI (0.12 mg/kg/h preceded by a loading dose of 0.12 mg/kg IV) or IA (1 mg/kg IV q8h). There was not a statistically significant difference in urine volume over 24 hours between methods; however, urine volume was significantly greater after CRI compared with IA during the first 8 hours ([median 25th percentile, 75th percentile]: 9.6 L [8.9, 14.4] for CRI versus 5.9 L [5.3, 6.0] for IA). CRI produced a more uniform urine flow, decreased fluctuations in plasma volume, and suppressed renal concentrating ability throughout the infusion period. Potassium, Ca, and Cl excretion was greater during CRI than IA (1,133 mmol [1.110, 1,229] versus 764 mmol [709, 904], 102.7 mmol [96.0, 117.2] versus 73.3 mmol [65.0, 73.5], and 1,776 mmol [1,657, 2.378] versus 1,596 mmol [1,457, 1,767], respectively). Elimination half-lives of furosemide were 1.35 and 0.47 hours for CRI and IA, respectively. The area under the excretion rate curve was 1,285.7 and 184.2 mL x mg/mL for CRI and IA, respectively. Furosemide CRI (0.12 mg/kg/h) for 8 hours, preceded by a loading dose (0.12 mg/kg), is recommended when profound diuresis is needed acutely in horses.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To establish the central corneal thickness (CCT) of normal koi fish by ultrasonic pachymetry, and its relationship to age, sex, body length and corneal diameter. METHODS: Age, sex and body length of 33 koi fish (17 male and 16 female fish) were recorded. Horizontal and vertical corneal diameters of each eye were obtained using Jameson calipers. Central corneal thickness of all eyes was measured by ultrasonic pachymetry. Intraocular pressure (IOP) by rebound tonometry was obtained for a subgroup of nine koi (18 eyes). RESULTS: Mean central corneal thickness was 325.9 microm. Central corneal thickness of female koi was greater than CCT of male fish (P < 0.01). Central corneal thickness increased with increasing age overall and within both sexes (P < 0.01). Central corneal thickness increased with increasing body length (P < 0.001). For male and female fish, CCT increased with increasing horizontal and vertical corneal diameters (P < 0.01). Mean horizontal corneal diameter (HCD) was 8.05 mm, mean vertical corneal diameter (VCD) was 7.38 mm, and HCD was consistently greater than VCD. Mean IOP of a subgroup of these koi was 4.9 mmHg by rebound tonometry. CONCLUSIONS: Koi CCT increases with increasing age, body length and corneal diameter.  相似文献

Ovulation rate was measured in Barbados Blackbelly (United States strain; B), Targhee (T), Barbados X Targhee (B X T) and Barbados X Dorset-Targhee (B X DT) ewes at first and second estrus following synchronization of cycles early in the breeding season. Body weight at sponge removal differed (P less than .001) between B (30.9 kg) and T ewes (54.9 kg) and was intermediate for B X T (44.9 kg) and B X DT (43.5 kg) ewes. Ovulation rate was higher (P less than .01) at first and second estrus for B (1.86, 2.04), B X T (1.93, 2.04) and B X DT (1.72, 1.80) than for T (1.29, 1.40) ewes. Regressions of ovulation rate on body weight within the breed groups did not differ significantly from each other and the average was significant (b = .049 +/- .014 CL/kg at first estrus and b = .046 +/- .011 CL/kg at second estrus, where CL = number of corpora lutea), but differences between the groups in body weight did not explain the differences in ovulation rate. Litter size for B, B X T, B X DT and T groups was 1.71, 1.84, 1.84 and 1.28, respectively. The B X T ewes were superior to the average of the B and T ewes for ovulation rate (P less than .05) and litter size (P less than .01); there was no direct estimate of embryo survival, but the results indirectly indicate superiority of the crossbreds for this component also.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
