Purpose

Sampling and analysis of greenhouse soils were conducted in Shouguang, China, to study continuous excessive fertilization effect on nitrifying microbial community dynamics in greenhouse environment.

Materials and methods

Potential nitrification activity (PNA), abundance, and structure of nitrifying microbial communities as well as the correlations with soil properties were investigated.

Results and discussion

Short-term excessive fertilization increased soil nutrient contents and the diversity of nitrifying microbial communities under greenhouse cultivation. However, the abundance and diversity of nitrifying communities decreased greatly due to the increase of soil acidity and salinity after 14 years of high fertilization in greenhouse. There was a significant positive correlation between soil PNA and the abundance of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) but not that of ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) in topsoil (0–20 cm) when pH ≥7. Soil PNA and AOB were strongly influenced by soil pH. The groups of Nitrososphaeraceae, Nitrosomonadaceae, and Nitrospiraceae were predominant in the AOA, AOB, and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) communities, respectively. Nitrifying community structure was significantly correlated with soil electrical salinity (EC), organic carbon (OC), and nitrate nitrogen (NO3 ?–N) content by redundancy analysis (RDA).

Conclusions

Nitrification was predominated by AOB in greenhouse topsoil with high fertilizer loads. Soil salinity, OC, NO3 ?–N content, and pH affected by continuous excessive fertilization were the major edaphic factors in shaping nitrifying community structure in greenhouse soils.

Purpose

A laboratory incubation under constant temperature and humidity was conducted to estimate the impacts of nitrogen (N) fertilizers on the acidification of two acid soils (Plinthudult and Paleudalfs) in south China.

Materials and methods

The experiment had three treatments, i.e., control (CK), addition of urea (U), and addition of ammonium sulfate (AS). We measured soil pH, nitrate (NO3 ?), ammonium (NH4 +), exchangeable hydrogen ion (H+), and aluminum ion (Al3+) concentrations at various intervals during the 90 days of incubation. Soil buffering capacity (pHBC) was also measured at the end of the experiment.

Results and discussion

The application of N fertilizers resulted in soil acidification. The U treatment caused greater acidification of the Plinthudult soil than the AS treatment, while there were no differences between U and AS treatments on the acidification of the Paleudalfs. At the end of the trial, the pHBC of Plinthudult in AS treatment was greater than that in CK and U treatments, which may be due to the buffering system of NH4 + and NH4OH. However, the pHBC of Paleudalfs was unchanged between treatments. The dynamics of exchangeable H+ and Al3+ corresponded to that of soil pH. Correlation analysis showed that both soil exchangeable H+ and soil exchangeable Al3+ were significantly related to soil pH.

Conclusions

Application of urea and ammonium sulfate caused acidification in both soils and increased soil exchangeable Al3+ and H+ concentrations in the Paleudalfs. The application of urea increased exchangeable Al3+, and ammonium sulfate increased pHBC in the Plinthudult.  相似文献

Purpose

Long-term manure applications can prevent or reverse soil acidification by chemical nitrogen (N) fertilizer. However, the resistance to re-acidification from further chemical fertilization is unknown. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of urea application on nitrification and acidification processes in an acid red soil (Ferralic Cambisol) after long-term different field fertilization treatments.

Materials and methods

Soils were collected from six treatments of a 19-year field trial: (1) non-fertilization control, (2) chemical phosphorus and potassium (PK), (3) chemical N only (N), (4) chemical N, P, and K (NPK), (5) pig manure only (M), and (6) NPK plus M (NPKM; 70 % N from M). In a 35-day laboratory incubation experiment, the soils were incubated and examined for changes in pH, NH4 +, and NO3 ?, and their correlations from urea application at 80 mg N kg?1(?80) compared to 0 rate (?0).

Results and discussion

From urea addition, manure-treated soils exhibited the highest acidification and nitrification rates due to high soil pH (5.75–6.38) and the lowest in the chemical N treated soils due to low soil pH (3.83–3.90) with no N-treated soils (pH 4.98–5.12) fell between. By day 35, soil pH decreased to 5.21 and 5.81 (0.54 and 0.57 unit decrease) in the NPKM-80 and M-80 treatments, respectively, and to 4.69 and 4.53 (0.43 and 0.45 unit decrease) in the control-80 and PK-80 treatments, respectively, with no changes in the N-80 and NPK-80 treatments. The soil pH decrease was highly correlated with nitrification potential, and the estimated net proton released. The maximum nitrification rates (K max) of NPKM and M soils (14.7 and 21.6 mg N kg?1 day?1, respectively) were significantly higher than other treatments (2.86–3.48 mg N kg?1 day?1). The priming effect on mineralization of organic N was high in manure treated soils.

Conclusions

Field data have shown clearly that manure amendment can prevent or reverse the acidification of the red soil. When a chemical fertilizer such as urea is applied to the soil again, however, soil acidification will occur at possibly high rates. Thus, the strategy in soil N management is continuous incorporation of manure to prevent acidification to maintain soil productivity. Further studies under field conditions are needed to provide more accurate assessments on acidification rate from chemical N fertilizer applications.  相似文献

Purpose

Few studies have examined the effects of biochar on nitrification of ammonium-based fertilizer in acidic arable soils, which contributes to NO3 ? leaching and soil acidification.

Materials and methods

We conducted a 42-day aerobic incubation and a 119-day weekly leaching experiment to investigate nitrification, N leaching, and soil acidification in two subtropical soils to which 300 mg N kg?1 ammonium sulfate or urea and 1 or 5 wt% rice straw biochar were applied.

Results and discussion

During aerobic incubation, NO3 ? accumulation was enhanced by applying biochar in increasing amounts from 1 to 5 wt%. As a result, pH decreased in the two soils from the original levels. Under leaching conditions, biochar did not increase NO3 ?, but 5 wt% biochar addition did reduce N leaching compared to that in soils treated with only N. Consistently, lower amounts of added N were recovered from the incubation (KCl-extractable N) and leaching (leaching plus KCl-extractable N) experiments following 5 wt% biochar application compared to soils treated with only N.

Conclusions

Incorporating biochar into acidic arable soils accelerates nitrification and thus weakens the liming effects of biochar. The enhanced nitrification does not necessarily increase NO3 ? leaching. Rather, biochar reduces overall N leaching due to both improved N adsorption and increased unaccounted-for N (immobilization and possible gaseous losses). Further studies are necessary to assess the effects of biochar (when used as an addition to soil) on N.  相似文献

Impact of organic matter addition on pH change of paddy soils   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0

Purpose

The objective of the present study was to explore the effect of initial pH on the decomposition rate of plant residues and the effect of residue type on soil pH change in three different paddy soils.

Materials and methods

Two variable charge paddy soils (Psammaquent soil and Plinthudult soil) and one constant charge paddy soil (Paleudalfs soil) were used to be incubated at 45 % of field capacity for 105 days at 25 °C in the dark after three plant residues (Chinese milk vetch, wheat straw, and rice straw) were separately added at a level of 12 g?kg?1 soil. Soil pH, CO2 escaped, DOC, DON, MBC, MBN, NH 4 + , and NO 3 ? during the incubation period were dynamically determined.

Results and discussion

Addition of the residues increased soil pH by 0.1–0.8 U, and pH reached a maximum in the Psammaquent and Plinthudult soils with low initial pH at day 105 but at day 3 in the Paleudalfs soil with high initial pH. Incorporation of Chinese milk vetch which had higher concentration of alkalinity (excess cations) and nitrogen increased soil pH more as compared with incorporation of rice and wheat straws. Microbial activity was the highest in Chinese milk vetch treatment, which resulted in the highest increase of soil pH as compared with addition of rice and wheat straws. However, nitrification seemed to be inhibited in the variable charge soils of Psammaquent and Plinthudult but not in the constant charge soil of Paleudalfs.

Conclusions

The effectiveness of increasing soil pH after incorporation of the plant materials would be longer in low initial pH soils of Psammaquent and Plinthudult than in high initial pH soil of Paleudalfs. In order to achieve the same degree of pH improvement, higher amounts of plant residues should be applied in constant charge soils than in variable charge soils.  相似文献

Purpose

For an alkaline?Csaline region in Northwest China, we examined the responses of soil microbial communities to flue gas desulfurization gypsum by-products (FGDB), a new ameliorant for alkaline?Csaline soils. In 2009 and 2010, we collected soils from 0?C20?cm and 20?C40?cm depths along an experimental FGDB gradient (0, 0.74, 1.49, 2.25, and 3.00?kg FGDB m?2).

Materials and methods

As a measure of microbial community composition and biomass, we analyzed phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs). We used real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) to measure abundance of bacterial 16?S rRNA copy numbers. Additionally, physicochemical soil parameters were measured by common laboratory methods.

Results and discussion

Microbial community composition differed along the FGDB gradient; however, the microbial parameters did not follow a linear response. We found that, in 2009, total PLFA concentrations, and concentrations of total bacterial and Gram-negative bacterial PLFAs were slightly higher at intermediate FGDB concentrations. In 2010, total PLFA concentrations, and concentrations of total bacterial, Gram-positive bacterial, Gram-negative bacterial, and fungal PLFAs as well as the fungal:bacterial PLFA ratio were highest at 1.49?kg FGDB m?2 and 3.00?kg FGDB m?2. PLFA concentrations often differed between 2009 and 2010; however, the patterns varied across the gradient and across microbial groups. For both years, PLFA concentrations were generally higher at 0?C20?cm depth than at 20?C40?cm depth. Similar results were obtained for the 16?S rRNA copy numbers of bacteria at 0?C20?cm depth. FGDB addition resulted in an increase in soil Ca2+ and NO 3 ? ?CN and a decrease in pH and electrical conductivity (EC). Shifts in PLFA-based microbial community composition and biomass could partly be explained by pH, soil organic carbon, total nitrogen (TN), soil moisture, EC, inorganic nitrogen, C/N, and Ca2+. Indirect effects via shifts in abiotic soil properties, therefore, seem to be an important pathway through which FGDB affect soil microbial communities.

Conclusions

Our results demonstrate that addition of FGDB leads to significant changes in soil physicochemical and microbial parameters. As such, addition of FGDB can have large impacts on the functioning of soil ecosystems, such as carbon and nitrogen cycling processes.  相似文献

Purpose

The effect of Fe oxides on the natural acidification of highly weathered soils was investigated to explore the natural acidification process in variable charge soils

Materials and methods

A variety of highly weathered soils with different Fe oxide contents were collected from the tropical and subtropical regions of southern China to investigate the soil acidity status. Electrodialysis experiments were conducted to simulate natural acidification process and promote accelerated acidification in a variety of systems such as relatively less weathered soils, mixtures of goethite with montmorillonite or kaolinite, an Alfisol, a limed Ultisol, and Fe oxides coated montmorillonite. The objective was to gather evidence for the occurrence of Fe oxide inhibited natural acidification in highly weathered soils.

Results and discussion

Highly weathered soils with free Fe2O3?<?100?g/kg (17 soils) had an average pH?=?4.64?±?0.06, while the soils with free Fe2O3?>?100?g/kg (49 soils) had an average pH?=?5.25?±?0.04. A significant linear relationship was found between the soil pH and Fe oxide content of these soils. Similar results were obtained in electrodialysis experiments, i.e., in soils that underwent accelerated acidification. A negative correlation was found between the Fe oxide content and exchangeable acidity or effective cation exchange capacity, respectively. In another set of experiments, goethite slowed down acidification in experiments conducted with this Fe oxide and montmorillonite, or kaolinite, or an Alfisol, or a limed Ultisol. The overlapping of the electrical double layers on the positively charged Fe oxide particles and negatively charged minerals may have caused the release and subsequent leaching of the base cations, but inhibited the production of exchangeable acidity cations. In addition, when montmorillonite or Fe oxide-coated montmorillonite were electrodialyzed in another set of experiments, exchangeable acidity of the former was much greater than that of the latter, suggesting that the positively charged Fe oxide coatings on montmorillonite have partially neutralized the permanent negative charge on montmorillonite surfaces, decreasing exchangeable acidity.

Conclusions

Fe oxides may function as natural ??anti-acidification?? agents through electric double-layer overlapping and coating of phylliosilicates in highly weathered soils.

Purpose

Greenhouse vegetable-rice crop rotations have rapidly expanded in the southeast of China in recent years. However, how rice planting affects nutrient accumulation and transfer in soils during plastic greenhouse vegetable cultivation is still poorly understood. The aim of this research was to characterize the nutrient accumulation and vertical distribution of greenhouse soil under long-term greenhouse vegetable-rice rotation.

Materials and methods

The nutrient accumulation and transfer between greenhouse eggplant-summer rice (GER) and greenhouse eggplant-summer fallow (GEF) without plastic cover in the Changxing city, Zhejiang province of China, were compared. The soil nutrient contents were determined in the surface soil samples collected from both the GER and GEF systems after eggplant harvest and after summer cultivation as well as the soils collected from both systems at different soil depths after summer cultivation. The nitrogen concentration of the surface water and groundwater samples collected during the flooding water time in GER was also measured.

Results and discussion

Both the GER and GEF soils showed obvious accumulation of nutrients at the 0–20-cm soil depth after eggplant harvest. However, compared with the summer fallow without plastic cover in GEF, rice planting in GER sharply reduced the nutrients in soils at the 0–20-cm layer. The NO3 ?-N, Olsen-P, and available K in the soil of GER decreased from 25, 159, and 144 to 8, 127, and 120 mg kg?1, respectively. Nutrient contents in all different soil depths in GER were lower than those in GEF at equivalent soil depths. The nitrogen content of groundwater in GER showed unobvious enhancement during flooding water time.

Conclusions

Rice planting during the summer after greenhouse vegetable cultivation could reduce the nutrient accumulation in soil. Flooding water in summer did not increase nutrient leaching in comparison with fallow without plastic cover during the summer. Thus, rice can be regarded as a suitable catch crop for greenhouse vegetable cultivation.

Purpose

Soil-plant transfer models are needed to predict levels of mercury (Hg) in vegetables when evaluating food chain risks of Hg contamination in agricultural soils.

Materials and methods

A total of 21 soils covering a wide range of soil properties were spiked with HgCl2 to investigate the transfer characteristics of Hg from soil to carrot in a greenhouse experiment. The major controlling factors and prediction models were identified and developed using path analysis and stepwise multiple linear regression analysis.

Results and discussion

Carrot Hg concentration was positively correlated with soil total Hg concentration (R 2?=?0.54, P?<?0.001), and the log-transformation greatly improved the correlation (R 2?=?0.76, P?<?0.001). Acidic soil exhibited the highest bioconcentration factor (BCF) (ratio of Hg concentration in carrot to that in soil), while calcareous soil showed the lowest BCF among the 21 soil types. The significant direct effects of soil total Hg (Hgsoil), pH, and free Al oxide (AlOX) on the carrot Hg concentration (Hgcarrot) as revealed by path analysis were consistent with the result from stepwise multiple linear regression that yielded a three-term regression model: log [Hgcarrot]?=?0.52log [Hgsoil]???0.06pH???0.64log [AlOX]???1.05 (R 2?=?0.81, P?<?0.001).

Conclusions

Soil Hg concentration, pH, and AlOX content were the three most important variables associated with carrot Hg concentration. The extended Freundlich-type function could well describe Hg transfer from soil to carrot.  相似文献

Purpose

Initial soil pH determines the direction and magnitude of pH change after residue addition. This study aimed to evaluate the relative importance of initial soil pH and rate of residue application in determining subsequent pH change, nitrogen (N) mineralization, and soil-exchangeable aluminum (Al).

Materials and methods

An incubation experiment was conducted for 102 days on a Plinthudult soil and a Paleudalf soil, where pH gradients were produced after application of direct current (DC). Rates of vetch applications were 0, 5, 15, 30, and 50 g kg?1 soil.

Results and discussion

Increasing rates of vetch application caused greater increases in soil pH, but no consistent increase in soil pH at higher initial pH range (4.40~6.74), because of nitrification. There was a positive correlation between alkalinity production and the initial soil pH at day 14, while correlations became negative at days 56 and 102. Mineral N accumulated as NH4 +–N in low pH soils, due to limited nitrification, while NO3 ?–N dominated in higher pH soils. Application of vetch decreased KCl-extractable Al, probably because of complexation of Al by organic matter and precipitation of Al as a result of increased pH, reductions in Al concentration increased with increasing rates of vetch application. However, this amelioration effect on Al concentration weakened with time in higher pH soils.

Conclusions

Application of vetch residue can significantly increase soil pH and concentrations of mineral N and reduce exchangeable Al. These amelioration effects are enhanced with increased rate of vetch addition and vary with time depending on the initial pH of the soil.  相似文献

The Nandong Underground River System (NURS) is located in Southeast Yunnan Province, China. Groundwater in NURS plays a critical role in socio-economical development of the region. However, with the rapid increase of population in recent years, groundwater quality has degraded greatly. In this study, the analysis of 36 groundwater samples collected from springs in both rain and dry seasons shows significant spatial disparities and slight seasonal variations of major element concentrations in the groundwater. In addition, results from factor analysis indicate that NO 3 ? , Cl?, SO 4 2? , Na+, K+, and EC in the groundwater are mainly from the sources related to human activities while Ca2+, Mg2+, HCO 3 ? , and pH are primarily controlled by water–rock interactions in karst system with Ca2+ and HCO 3 ? somewhat from anthropogenic inputs. With the increased anthropogenic contaminations, the groundwater chemistry changes widely from Ca-HCO3 or Ca (Mg)-HCO3 type to Ca-Cl (+NO3) or Ca (Mg)-Cl (+NO3), and Ca-Cl (+NO3+SO4) or Ca (Mg)-Cl (+NO3+SO4) type. Concentrations of NO 3 ? , Cl?, SO 4 2? , Na+, and K+ generally show an indistinct grouping with respect to land use types, with very high concentrations observed in the groundwater from residential and agricultural areas. This suggests that those ions are mainly derived from sewage effluents and fertilizers. No specific land use control on the Mg2+ ion distribution is observed, suggesting Mg2+ is originated from natural dissolution of carbonate rocks. The distribution of Ca2+ and HCO 3 ? does not show any distinct land use control either, except for the samples from residential zones, suggesting the Ca2+ and HCO 3 - mainly come from both natural dissolution of carbonate rocks and sewage effluents.  相似文献

Purpose

The aim of the research was to explore the effect of Chinese milk vetch (CM vetch) addition and different water management practices on soil pH change, C and N mineralization in acid paddy soils.

Materials and methods

Psammaquent and Plinthudult paddy soils amended with Chinese milk vetch at a rate of 12 g?kg?1 soil were incubated at 25 °C under three different water treatments (45 % field capacity, CW; alternating 1-week wetting and 2-week drying cycles, drying rewetting (DRW) and waterlogging (WL). Soil pH, dissolved organic carbon, dissolved organic nitrogen (DON), CO2 escaped, microbial biomass carbon, ammonium (NH4 +) and nitrate (NO3 ?) during the incubation period were dynamically determined.

Results and discussion

The addition of CM vetch increased soil microbial biomass concentrations in all treatments. The CM vetch addition also enhanced dissolved organic N concentrations in all treatments. The NO3–N concentrations were lower than NH4–N concentrations in DRW and WL. The pH increase after CM vetch addition was 0.2 units greater during WL than DRW, and greater in the low pH Plinthudult (4.59) than higher pH Paleudalfs (6.11) soil. Nitrogen mineralization was higher in the DRW than WL treatment, and frequent DRW cycles favored N mineralization in the Plinthudult soil.

Conclusions

The addition of CM vetch increased soil pH, both under waterlogging and alternating wet–dry conditions. Waterlogging decreased C mineralization in both soils amended with CM vetch. Nitrogen mineralization increased in the soils subjected to DRW, which was associated with the higher DON concentrations in DRW than in WL in the acid soil. Frequent drying–wetting cycles increase N mineralization in acid paddy soils.  相似文献

集约化大棚蔬菜种植条件下土壤硒有效性的影响因子分析   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Soil properties dramatically change after long-term greenhouse vegetable cultivation, which further affects soil selenium (Se) nutritional status and plant Se uptake. An evaluation of Se availability after long-term greenhouse vegetable cultivation (GVC) can help in better understanding its influential factors under GVC conditions and will also facilitate further regulation of soil Se nutrition in GVC systems. Two typical GVC bases were chosen: one with clayey and acidic soil in Nanjing, southern China, and the other with sandy alkaline soil in Shouguang, northern China. Twenty-seven surface soil samples at the Nanjing base and 61 surface soil samples at the Shouguang base were collected according to cultivation duration and cultivation intensity. Soil properties including soil available Se (PO43--Se) and total Se (T-Se) were analyzed. The results showed that soil PO43--Se was significantly and negatively correlated with soil Olsen-P, available K (A-K), and electrical conductivity (EC) at the Nanjing base. At the Shouguang base, however, no significant correlation was found between soil PO43--Se and Olsen-P and EC, and soil PO43--Se increased with increasing soil organic matter (OM). Intensively utilized greenhouse vegetable cultivation caused significant changes in soil properties and further affected soil Se availability. Due to different management practices, the dominant factors affecting Se availability varied between the two GVC bases. At the Nanjing base, the dominant influential factor on soil Se availability was soil nutritional status, especially Olsen-P and A-K status. At the Shouguang base, where organic fertilizers were applied at high rates, soil OM was the dominant influential factor.  相似文献

Purpose

Applying standard soil analytical methods to novel soil materials, such as tailings or soils with unusual properties, should be done with caution and with special consideration of potential interferents and possible pretreatments. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of common variations in methods on calculated total moisture content, pH, and electrical conductivity (EC) of saline alkaline soil materials.

Materials and methods

Bauxite residue (an alkaline, saline–sodic Technosolic material) as well as two saline alkaline soils from coastal and lacustrine environments were dried under various temperatures and atmospheres, and then analyzed for pH and EC at various soil–solution ratios over time.

Results and discussion

Calculated moisture content of all samples increased with drying temperature. Dehydration of gypsum elevated calculated moisture content. Decreases in soil–solution ratio decreased suspension EC and pH in highly alkaline samples. The pH and EC of soil/water suspensions generally rose with equilibration time for bauxite residue; stable values were attained within 24–120 h. Atmospheric carbonation substantially decreased the pH of samples dried at lower temperatures.

Conclusions

Variations in temperature, time, and atmosphere during drying of highly alkaline and saline soil materials influenced calculated moisture content as well as chemical properties such as pH and EC. A drying temperature of 40 °C and drying to constant weight is recommended to minimize these effects. Soil–solution ratio, equilibration time, and sample preparation conditions influenced observed pH and EC, and should be standardized if attempting to compare results between studies.  相似文献

Purpose

The aim of this study was to evaluate the behaviour of P in saline Spolic Technosols flooded with eutrophic water, with and without plant rhizosphere, in order to assess the role of these soils as sinks or sources of this nutrient.

Materials and methods

Samples were taken from basic (pH?~7.8), carbonated and acidic (pH?~6.2), de-carbonated soils of salt marshes polluted by mine wastes. Three treatments were assayed: pots with Sarcocornia fruticosa, pots with Phragmites australis and pots without plants (bare soil). The pots were flooded for 15?weeks with eutrophic water (PO 4 3? ~6.92?mg?L?1) and pH, Eh and water-soluble organic carbon and PO 4 3? concentrations were monitored in the soil solution. A soil P fractionation was applied before and after the flooding period.

Results and discussion

The PO 4 3? concentration in the soil solution decreased rapidly in both soils, with and without plant, being diminished by 80?C90?% after 3?h of flooding. The Fe/Mn/Al oxides and the Ca/Mg compounds played an important role in soil P retention. In pots with S. fruticosa, the reductive conditions due to flooding induced P release from metal oxides and P retention to Ca/Mg compounds. In turn, P. australis may have favoured the release of P from carbonates, which was transferred to Fe/Mn/Al compounds.

Conclusions

The retention of P by the soil was the main mechanism involved in the removal of PO 4 3? from the eutrophic flooding water but to evaluate the capacity of these systems as long-term P sinks, the combined effect of metals, Ca/Mg compounds and specific plant species should be considered.  相似文献

Purpose

The effects of soil pH manipulation and KCl addition on N2O production in adjacent forest and grassland soils in central Alberta were studied in a 16-day laboratory incubation experiment.

Materials and methods

The soils were subjected to four pH and two salt treatments: CK (control)—no addition of acid or alkali solution (pH 4.50 and 4.48 for the forest and grassland soils, respectively; same below); HCl—addition of HCl solution to lower soil pH (3.95 and 3.75); L-KOH and H-KOH—addition of 6 mL of 0.2 (5.36 and 5.57) and 0.4 (6.41 and 6.72)?mol?L?1 KOH solution, respectively, to increase soil pH to two different levels. In order to differentiate between the effect of a change in pH and of changed salt concentrations on N2O production, 6 mL of 0.2 (L-KCl) (4.56 and 4.41) or 0.4 mol?L?1 (H-KCl) (4.59 and 4.42) KCl solutions were also applied as treatments to create two levels of salt application rates.

Results and discussion

Increasing pH promoted gross nitrification and cumulative N2O production in both soils, particularly in the forest soil. However, cumulative N2O production decreased in the forest soil but increased in the grassland soil when pH decreased. Cumulative N2O production in the grassland soil was 36 times higher in the L-KCl treatment (1,442 μg?N?kg?1) than in the CK (40 μg?N?kg?1), whereas the H-KCl treatment reduced cumulative N2O production. In contrast, in the forest soil, both KCl treatments reduced cumulative N2O production.

Conclusions

(1) The most important factor to increase N2O production in this study was increasing soil pH, suggesting that careful soil pH management could be used as a tool to control soil N2O production; (2) salt effect was also involved in affecting N2O production.  相似文献
