A case of an undifferentiated rhabdomyosarcoma in a hen

A more than hen's-egg-sized tumour was found in the breast muscle of a seven months old chicken. In liver, lungs and kidney metastases were seen. The light- and electronmicroscopic survey led to the diagnosis of an undifferentiated rhabdomyosarcoma.     

Hyperadrenocorticism in a dog: A case report

A case of hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing's Syndrome) in a 7-year-old female Miniature Poodle is presented. The methods of diagnosis and treatment are also described. The case was complicated by respiratory problems associated with probable dystrophic calcification of the lungs.     

Diprosopiasis in a lamb. A case report

Conjoined twinning has been reported in most of the domestic animal species. Among them, sheep have the highest incidence of craniofacial defects. A live male crossbreed dystocic two-headed lamb was delivered from a 2-year-old Pinzerita sheep after first mating. After 40 h of life, the lamb spontaneously died. The most important gross findings involved the head, whereas the examination of different organ and tissue sections did not reveal remarkable histomorphological changes. The lamb was classified as a conjoined twinning and, on the basis of the facial duplication, as a diprosopus tetraophtalmus.     

A non-systemic skeletal disease in a cat--a case report

A report is given on a skeleton disease in a cat, mainly demonstrating an extraordinary severe coxarthrosis.     

Sand colic in a mule: A case report

A 25-year-old mule was showing signs of colic. Clinical examination revealed acute pain, bilateral abdominal distention, stretching out and standing in this position. Rectal palpation revealed a hardened mass in the ventral region of the pelvic inlet. Surgical intervention was accomplished and faecaliths removed by colotomy. The mule died unexpectedly and postmortem examination revealed sand masses within the right ventral and right dorsal colon which caused obstruction of the intestinal tract in sternal and diaphragmatic flexures, respectively. This appears to be the first report of sand colic in a mule in Iran.     

Cecocecal intussusception in a pony: A case report

A 14-year-old Welsh-cross gelding was referred to Texas Veterinary Medical Center's Teaching Hospital because of mild to moderate abdominal pain of 48 hours duration. The referring veterinarian rectally palpated a grapefruit-sized firm mass in the anterior ventral abdomen. The pony had been treated with flunixin meglumine^a (1.0 mg/kg, IV) and mineral oil (2 liters) via nasogastric tube.     

Management of a keratoma in a horse: A case report

An 8-year-old Thoroughbred gelding presented with chronic intermittent lameness of the left forelimb. Keratoma was diagnosed based on history, clinical signs and the radiographic evidence of a radiolucent concavity of the third phalanx. The keratoma was removed by hoof wall resection and the foot was immobilized using a bar shoe with clips and a dorsal hoof wall plate positioned across the hoof wall defect. The hoof wall defect was completely filled with new hoof wall by 9 months postoperatively. The horse returned to normal athletic function and is performing successfully 18 months later.     

Histiocytic ulcerative colitis in a boxer. A case report

A case of canine histiocytic ulcerative colitis, a disease of boxers, is here described. It appears that this disease has not been previously reported in Scandinavia. The diagnosis was established at necropsy of a 5-month-old boxer, which had shown bloody diarrhoea since the age of four weeks. Treatment with antibiotics had only given a temporary remission of the condition. Macroscopical findings included thickening of the wall of the descending colon and rectum, multiple ulcers in the rectocolonic mucosa and marked enlargement of the colonic lymph nodes. Microscopically the lesions were characterized by large accumulations of PAS-positive histiocytes, mixed with cells of the plasma cell type, in the mucosa and submucosa of the rectum and descending colon and in the colonic lymph nodes. The importance of using proctocolonoscopy and colon biopsy for the clinical diagnosis of this condition is stressed.     

A case report of an ectopic fetus in a cat

An ectopic fetus was discovered in an 18-month-old uniparous queen that was admitted for an elective ovariectomy. Six months prior she had delivered three healthy kittens. During the preoperative examination, a mass similar in size to a full-term fetus was detected in the abdominal cavity. Ultrasound examination revealed the mass to be an ectopic fetus in the mid-abdominal region. A mummified fetus was removed by laparotomy. No rupture of the uterine wall was visible, but a small necrotic area was present on the left uterine horn, adjacent to the very proximal portion of the uterine horn. The fetus, which was fully developed and covered by a thin membrane, was carefully dissected. Histological examination did not enable us to definitively prove the extra-uterine development of the fetus; however, the ectopic development of the conceptus secondarily expelled into the peritoneal cavity could be assumed.     

Haemophilia A in the cocker spaniel: a case report

A four-year-old entire male cocker spaniel was presented with a history of dyspnoea due to tracheal stenosis. As part of the clinical approach, a coagulation screening profile revealed moderately reduced levels of Factor VIII procoagulant activity (VIII: C), but elevated factor VHI-related antigen levels (VIIIR: Ag). A diagnosis of haemophilia A (classic haemophilia) was made and the tracheal stenosis attributed to a mediastinal haematoma. The dyspnoea was alleviated by the surgical insertion of a tracheostomy tube and the dog was treated with citrated whole blood and fresh-frozen canine plasma. Response to treatment was excellent and follow-up radiography three months later revealed resolution of the tracheal stenosis.     

Aplastic anemia in a clydesdale foal: A case report

A nine-week-old Clydesdale foal was presented with severe anemia, panleucopenia and thrombocytopenia. Bone marrow biopsy revealed marrow fat and bone spicules but was almost acellular, indicating the existence of aplastic anemia. Histological examination of marrow obtained at post mortem examination revealed only occasional nests of mononuclear cells. Marked biliary hyperplasia was present in the liver. The etiology was uncertain but a toxic insult resulting in aplastic anemia and hepatic disease may have occurred in utero or in the neonatal period. This appears to be the first report of aplastic anemia in a foal.     

Mesenchymal tumor in a female chamois. A case report

A free-living 15-year old female chamois was shot because of illness and emaciation. The examination of the internal organs revealed numerous firm whitish tumour nodules in liver,spleen, mesenterium and peritoneum. Histologically the nature of tumour cells was identified as a metastasizing malignoma of mesenchymal origin. In addition to the blastoma, the parasite burden of the gastrointestinal tract and lungs did very likely contribute to the bad bodily condition of the chamois.
