The herbage intake and performance of set-stocked suckler cows and calves   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Groups of eight Hereford × Friesian cows and their South Devon cross calves were set stocked over a 24-week grazing season at 3·23 (low), 3·21 (medium) or 4·24 (high) cows ha-1 together with their calves. For the first 8 weeks only two-thirds of the total area was grazed. Increasing the stocking rate from low to medium reduced daily milk yield and cow and calf liveweight gains by 1·2, 0·24 and 0·29 kg d-1 respectively, and from medium to high by 1·2, 0·24 and 0·23 kg d-1. The main sward factor influencing faecal output and herbage intake was the quantity of organic matter on the pastures but the digestibility of the herbage selected also exerted a significant effect on the intake of cows. Major depressions in the herbage intake of cows occurred once the average sward height fell below 7 cm. Output of calf live weight was 628, 658 and 743 kg ha-1 for the 3 stocking rates from low to high, and for cows 246, 179 and 30 kg ha-1. It was concluded that decisions on pasture management should be taken in relation to the cow rather than the calf on set-stocked swards.  相似文献

Two experiments are described in which groups of lactating cows, non-lactating cattle and weaned calves grazed a sequence of swards varying in maturity and herbage mass under strip grazing management at a daily herbage allowance of 60 g dry matter per kg live weight. Lactating cows ate 43% and 76% more herbage than non-lactating cattle of similar weight in the two experiments but herbage OM intakes per unit live weight by the calves and lactating cows were similar.
Variations in diet digestibility and herbage intake in the lactating and non-lactating cattle with changes in sward conditions were similar. In the first experiment the calves were experienced grazers; the variation in the digestibility of the herbage selected was less in the calves than the adult cattle, but the variation in herbage intake was greater. The calves in the second experiment were younger, and they were inexperienced grazers; their ability to increase herbage intake in response to changing sward conditions was poorer than that of adult cattle, though variations in diet digestibility were similar in all classes.

Twenty-four Hereford × Friesian cows and their South Devon cross calves were allocated to three herbage allowances allotted daily for three periods of 8 weeks in a Latin square design. The daily allowances were 17, 34 and 51 g dry matter per kg cow plus calf live weight. Milk production was depressed by 0·2 and 1·2 kg d-1 at the medium and low allowances. The corresponding falls in liveweight gain were for cows 0·26 and 0·25, and for calves 0·27 and 0·24 kg d-1. Residual sward height after grazing gave a better indication of the animals' reaction to sward conditions and the management imposed than actual herbage allowance. The quantity per unit area and the composition of material present were important factors influencing intake. Calves were unable to compete with their dams to maintain herbage intake at the lower allowances and therefore are likely to benefit from additional feeding or creep grazing when residual sward height falls below 6cm for periods in excess of 1–2 weeks.  相似文献

Two experiments were carried out in Guadeloupe to estimate the organic matter intake (OMI) and digestibility (OMD) of a Dichanthium spp. sward, grazed by tethered Creole heifers [mean live weight (LW) 202 ± 2·0 kg], at three daily herbage allowances. Experiment 1 examined herbage allowances of 16, 25 and 31 kg of dry matter (DM) d–1 on a fertilized sward at 21 days of regrowth whereas, in experiment 2, lower allowances of 11, 15 and 19 kg DM d–1 were examined on the same sward, which was unfertilized and grazed at 14 days of regrowth. In each experiment, the herbage was grazed with three groups of two heifers in a 3 × 3 Latin square design. Sward characteristics were described before grazing. OMI was calculated from total faecal output, and OMD was predicted from the crude protein (CP) content of the faeces. The amount of herbage defoliated by the heifers was also estimated on tillers selected at random.
Organic matter intakes were on average 26 g and 19 g OM kg–1 LW, and OMD values were 0·740 and 0·665 for Experiments 1 and 2, respectively, and were not affected by allowance. In Experiment 1, the herbage quality was high [0·50 of leaf and 116 g CP kg–1 organic matter (OM)] for a tropical forage, whereas in Experiment 2, the quality of the herbage (0·27 of leaf and 73 g CP kg–1 OM) was lower. These differences were reflected in differences in intake and digestibility in the two experiments.
The experimental tropical Dichanthium spp. swards can have intake characteristics similar to those of a temperate sward.  相似文献

Pasture variables measured in eight experiments at Kyabram, Victoria were used to quantify factors influencing the consumption of irrigated pastures grazed by dairy cows. In addition, whether intake prediction equations based on sward characteristics could be developed and applied in the field was also considered.
Herbage intake (DMI) was positively related to herbage allowance (HA) in all cases; however, the increase in daily DMI achieved for every additional kg herbage offered to a cow ranged from 015 to 0·35 kg. Herbage intake was also consistently related to residual herbage (RH). For every additional tonne herbage dry matter (DM) ha−1 remaining after grazing, each cow consumed increased daily amounts of herbage ranging from 3·2 to 5·1 kg DM. However, of the other pasture variables, herbage mass (HM), pasture type (PT) and digestibility of the herbage DM on offer (DMD) influenced herbage intake less consistently.
When the data from all experiments were included together, DMI was influenced by sward characteristics in the following manner: where LW = live weight of the cow (kg) and DE = duration of experiment (d).
When RH was considered instead of HA, only 61% of the variability in intake was accounted for compared to 80% when HA was considered:
In both of these equations, two variables other than the sward characteristics were significant; these were LW and DE. The significance of these variables in these relationships are discussed together with the possibility of using them for predicting DMI in other environments. However, it is concluded that they do not have general applicability and it is suggested that they may be useful only in the environment in which they were generated.  相似文献

Six calves, six heifers and six dry cows grazed a mature sward (treatments A and B) and a leafy aftermath (treatment C) in succession. The yields of herbage on the two swards were 7100 lb and 1950 lb DM per acre (7950 kg and 2180 kg per ha), respectively. The amounts of herbage offered daily were 47 lb (21–5 kg) DM per head (treatment A), 70 lb (32 kg) (treatment B), and 60 lb (27 kg) (treatment C), Two estimates of herbage organic–matter intake (O,M,I,) were made on each treatment; records of grazing behaviour were made on treatments B and C, The digestibility of the diet selected on treatment C was higher than that selected on treatments A and B, and the animals ate significantly more O,M, on treatment C, The total grazing times on treatments B and C were similar, but the animals found it more difficult to graze on treatment B
Herbage O.M.I. increased significantly from treatment A to treatment B, even though the quantity of herbage offered per day on treatment A greatly exceeded the amount eaten. The increase in O,M,I, was found to be associated with an increase in faecal 0,M, output, but the digestibility of the diet did not change.  相似文献

Changes in the crude protein (CP) concentration of white clover and perennial ryegrass herbage from a mixed sward were determined on six sampling dates from May to October in each of 2 years. The swards were grown without fertilizer N in an organic farming system and continuously grazed by dairy cows during the grazing season. The annual mean contents of white clover in the dry matter (DM) of the sward were 272·3 and 307·0 g kg−1 in Years 1 and 2. The mean CP concentrations of the white clover and perennial ryegrass herbage were 251·6 and 151·9 g kg−1 DM in Year 1 and 271·9 and 174·0 g kg−1 DM in Year 2 respectively. The CP concentration of the white clover increased significantly during the grazing season from 220·0 to 284·1 g kg−1 DM in Year 1 and from 269·0 to 315·5 g kg−1 DM in Year 2. In the perennial ryegrass herbage the CP concentration increased from 112·2 to 172·6 g kg−1 DM in Year 1 and from 142·7 to 239·5 g kg−1 DM in Year 2. The rate of increase during the season in the CP concentration of the perennial ryegrass herbage was similar to the rate of increase recorded in the white clover herbage.  相似文献

Groups of calves and lambs grazed on plots of S23 perennial ryegrass, in successive periods of 2, 2 and 3 weeks, at stocking rates which resulted in a slow change in herbage mass on each plot and measurements were made of ingestive behaviour (biting rate, bite size and grazing time) and herbage intake. As the green herbage mass was progressively reduced from approx. 3000 to 1000 kg OM per ha between periods, biting rate and grazing time increased, but insufficiently to offset the rapid fall in bite size so that herbage intake declined by 24% and 39% for calves and lambs respectively. Patterns of response were similar in calves and lambs, though in all parameters except biting rate the lambs appeared to be more sensitive than the calves to changes in sward conditions and there was no evidence that lambs were better adapted to grazing on short swards than calves. Intake increased in both calves and lambs up to levels of 2500–3000 kg green OM per ha, though this response may have been attributable in part to the reinforcing effects of increasing herbage mass and diet digestibility. Lambs consistently selected a more digestible diet than calves. Both calves and lambs increased grazing time substantially in response to limiting sward conditions, in contrast to results in earlier strip-grazing trials with calves, thus supporting the suggestion that the lack of response under strip-grazing is a characteristic of the management imposed.  相似文献

A comparison was made of stocking rates of 4·7, 5·6 and 6·4 cows ha-1 during the first 7 weeks (period 1) of the grazing season. Each group of British Friesian cows was continuously stocked on a day and a night field. In the subsequent periods 2 and 3 (each lasting 7 weeks) the three groups were maintained at the same stocking rate within periods (4·2 and 31 cows ha-1, respectively). The differential stocking rates were achieved by the addition and removal of cows.
The stocking rates applied in period I had no significant effects on milk yield, milk composition, liveweight change or condition score, in any period. Milk production ha-1 over the three periods totalled 12390,13 978 and 14986 kg, and the estimated utilized metabolizable energy totalled 773, 81·5 and 86·6 GJ ha-1 for low, medium and high stocking rates, respectively.
Increased stocking rate in period I was associated with a decrease in sward height in periods 1 and 2. This led to an increase in herbage metabolizable energy, and crude protein contents, and to an increase in tiller population density. The lowest stocking rate gave greater live individual tiller weights throughout the experiment and a longer interval between defoliation of individual tillers in period 1.
The results indicate that high stocking rates in the spring are not necessarily detrimental to overall summer performance of spring calving dairy cows. However, high stocking rates in the early season ensure a high level of herbage utilization and milk output ha-1 in that period. Although this practice leads to a reduced sward height in mid season, the sward has less rejected area, a higher tiller population density and a higher digestibility than swards stocked at a lower level.  相似文献

Over a 24-week period, three groups of dairy cows were continuously stocked at 8, 10 or 12 cows ha-1 between morning and afternoon milkings, and overnight were housed and offered grass silage ad libitum. Due to a prolonged drought, sward heights only averaged 4·1 cm.
The increase in daytime stocking rate led to a decline in herbage intake, and increases in silage intake. At the highest stocking rate (12 cows ha-1), the silage intake failed to compensate for the reduced herbage intake. Consequently the total dry matter and estimated metabolizable energy intakes were lower than for the 8 and 10 cows ha-1 treatments. Milk yields and milk composition were not significantly affected by treatment but the 12 cows ha-1 stocking rate gave the lowest milk and milk solids yields.
The utilized metabolizable energy (UME) on the grazed swards was greatest for the 10 cows ha-1 treatment. The sward cut to provide the silage had a UME level (GJ ha-1) 32% greater on average than the grazed swards during the same growth period. The total areas utilized for grazing and silage production for 8, 10 and 12 cows ha-1 were 0·240, 0·224 and 0·215 ha respectively. Fat and protein yields per unit area were greatest for the 10 cows ha-1 group.  相似文献

Groups of mature, non-lactating, cows grazed two Molinia -dominant grassland communities in central and southern Scotland during six consecutive summers. Two treatments, designed to use either 33% or 66% of the estimated annual Molinia leaf production by grazing to different leaf lengths, were imposed at each site. Grazing was restricted to the period of Molinia growth each season. During the first 4 years, diet composition, diet digestibility and herbage organic matter intake were determined during either one or two measurement periods each year. There were differences between sites in the floristic content of the sward and these differences were reflected in the diet selected by the cattle. Cows grazing the taller (33% utilization) plots had higher percentages of Molinia , grass stem, sheath and inflorescences and lower percentages of broad-leaved grasses, sedges, rushes and dead herbage in the diet than those grazing the shorter (66% utilization) plots. Differences between the floristic composition of the sward and the diet were explicable by (a) the height at which cattle grazed in relation to the distribution of components within the sward or (b) the selective grazing of small areas dominated by a particular species. The organic matter digestibility of diets differed between sites but there was no significant difference in digestibility or organic matter intake between the treatments. On average less than 50 d grazing was provided by the experimental sites each year. During this period the liveweight gains of cows grazing the two treatments did not differ significantly. The implications of these results for the management of Molinia -dominant communities are discussed.  相似文献

Voluntary intake and in vivo digestibility of herbage harvested from five indigenous communities– Agrostis-Festuca, Nardus and Molinia grasslands and Eriophorum vaginatum- and Trichophorum caespitosum -dominated varieties of blanket bog–and also from sown Lolium perenne and Trifolium repens swards were measured over two years. First growths of each sward were harvested at three stages of maturity and stored at — 20°C before feeding. Voluntary intake was measured while feeding ad libitum to 15% excess of the intake on the previous day and digestibility when feeding at 80% of voluntary intake.
There was a common positive relationship (r2= 0·86***) between intake (adjusted for year of feeding, range 72·8–16·7 g organic matter (kg LW)0·75 d-1) and organic matter digestibility (range 0·796–0·371), covering Lolium perenne and most of the indigenous communities. However, there were significant differences between the regressions of intake on the concentration of neutral detergent fibre for ryegrass and the indigenous communities, and also between the regressions for individual communities.
The results demonstrated the general value of organic matter digestibility as a predictor of intake potential, and the high digestibility and intake potential of immature vegetation from the grass and grass heath communities.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to examine the relationship between sward surface height, herbage intake and liveweight gain in beef cattle grazed on pasture. In Experiment 1, two 'animal types' (18 Charolais × Angus steers and 18 Friesian bulls) were continuously grazed for 22 days during the late autumn on replicated swards maintained at sward surface heights of 6, 10 and 15 cm. Herbage intakes, assessed from the faecal concentration of chromium delivered from an intraruminal controlled release capsule and the in vitro digestibility of hand-plucked herbage samples, were curvilinearly related to sward height (r = 0·76, p <0·0·01). Average liveweight gains were 0·02, 0·61 and 1·31 kg d-1 ( P <0·05) and increased linearly ( r = 0·84, P <0·001) with sward height. The maintenance organic matter intakes of the steers and bulls, with initial mean (± s.e.) live weights of 225 ± 15 kg and 172 ± 15 kg respectively, were estimated to be 3·6 and 3·5 kg d-1 respectively. In Experiment 2 (spring) 36 cattle, including 35 of those used in Experiment 1, were reallocated to sward heights of 5, 10 and 15 cm using the same design as for Experiment 1. Average liveweight gains were 0·94, 1·57 and 1·68kg d-1 ( p 0·05) and were curvilinearly related to sward height ( r = 0·093, p <0·05). Maintenance intakes could not be reliably extimated for the cattle in Experiment 2 because few animals had liveweight gains close to zero. These trials confirm that liveweight gain in continuously grazed finishing steers and bulls increases with sward surface height to maximum of 8–10cm with spring ryegrass/white clover pastures while, in autumn, swards of 12–15cm height are required to achieve maximum performance.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted to examine the relationships between sward surface height and the intake and liveweight gain of lactating female goats and their single kids and of 12-month-old castrated male goats continuously grazing grass pasture. Herbage intake was measured using the n -alkane marker technique. Goats grazed the experimental area from May to August at nominal sward heights of 3–4, 5–6, 7–8 and 9–10 cm. Sward heights achieved were variable but were consistently ranked in treatment order.
The herbage intake of females [57-140 g DM (kg LW0.75)−1 d−1] and castrates [26-88 g DM (kg LW0.75)−1 d−1] increased linearly with sward height over the range 3.2-11.0 cm. The liveweight change of females and castrates reflected the pattern of change in sward height.
The herbage intake of kids [17-41 g DM (kg LW0·75)−1 d−1] was not related to sward height, but there was a consistent increase in liveweight gain with sward height from 98 to 129 g d−1. The herbage intake of kids did not increase with age with means of 25–29 g DM (kg LW 0·75 d−1 for kids aged 9–17 weeks.
There was evidence that all classes of goat selected green leafy material of high digestibility.  相似文献

A single-probe capacitance meter (Pasture Probe), the Hill Farm Research Organization (HFRO) sward stick, a rising-plate meter, and cut quadrats were used to estimate herbage mass of swards that were rotationally grazed by cattle, cattle followed by topping, cattle followed by sheep, or sheep alone during 1989 and 1990 grazing seasons. Mean target pre- and post-grazing herbage masses were 2200 and 1100 kg dry matter (DM) ha−1 respectively. Linear regressions, correlations and scatterplots were calculated relating meter and sward stick readings to herbage mass on an ash-free organic matter basis measured by cutting quadrats of herbage at ground level.
Mean coefficients of variation for quadrat, capacitance meter, sward stick and rising plate were 28·8, 15·5, 27·2 and 27·9% respectively for pre-grazing herbage mass measurements, and 20·2, 10·1, 21·4, and 18·4% respectively for post-grazing measurements. These coefficients indicate that the capacitance meter varied less in estimating pre- and postgrazing herbage mass than the other three methods.
Correlation coefficients relating cut quadrats to capacitance meter, sward stick and rising plate readings were 0·65, 0·70 and 0·72 for pre-grazing, and 0·36, 0·31 and 0·05 for post-grazing herbage mass measurements respectively.
The non-destructive methods provided quick herbage mass estimates at a level of precision adequate for making day-to-day grazing management decisions on farms.  相似文献

The milk-production potential of different sward types was measured in each of the four seasons of the year in a replicated experiment in south-west Victoria, Australia. Dairy cows were offered ad libitum allowances of a 'short-term winter' sward, based on Italian ryegrass (treatment STW), a 'long-term winter' sward, based on a winter-active tall fescue (treatment LTW), a 'long-term summer' sward, based on a summer-active tall fescue (treatment LTS) and a Control sward (perennial ryegrass) in four seasons (days in milk in parentheses): spring (November dairy cows, 124), summer (February, 227), autumn (May, 234) and winter (August, sixty-four). A 'short-term summer' sward, based on chicory and white clover (treatment STS), was also included in summer. There was a significant season × treatment interaction caused by a more gradual decline in milk yield from peak for cows grazing treatment LTS compared to the Control treatment in the transition period from spring to summer. In summer, cows grazing treatment STS produced more milk (1·41 kg fat plus protein per cow d−1) than cows grazing all other treatments (0·92 kg per cow d−1) because of the superior nutritive value of herbage of pre-grazing pasture and higher apparent dry-matter intakes. Swards based on alternative species to perennial ryegrass are capable of supporting milk production that is at least comparable over an annual cycle.  相似文献

An experiment examining the relationship of daily herbage disappearance (DHD) and daily herbage allowance (DHA) is described. Cows with calves were grazed at three stocking rates on Kleingrass and Coastal Bermudagrass pastures. DHD and DHA were monitored at 14-d intervals. A significant positive linear relationship was noted between DHD and DHA ( P 0·25). Equations derived for Coastal Bermudagrass and Kleingrass were not significantly different and resulted in a combined equation Ŷ= 0·275X + 0·209 with an r2 vaiue of 0·27. As DHA exceeded 6–9 kg DM per 100 kg live weight, efficiency of defoliation by the cows and calves declined.  相似文献

This study was conducted to determine effects and interactions of plant density on digestibility and plant morphology of diverse orchardgrass ( Dactylis glomerata L.) clones. Propagules of ten orchardgrass clones with contrasting morphology from two maturity groups (inflorescence emergence differed by 8d) were evaluated in sward (0·15-m centres) and spaced (0·60-m centres) plantings. Plants were harvested from spring growth on a common date near anthesis and from summer growth when about 5 weeks of forage growth had accumulated. The plants were separated into morphological parts before measuring their size and in vitro digestible dry matter (IVDDM). There were few plant density × orchardgrass clone interactions, and correlation coefficients of clones grown at the two plant densities generally were high (e.g. 0·87 in spring and 0·67 in summer for IVDDM of total herbage). Plant density had little effect on morphology of leaf blades from reproductive tillers, but leaf blades of vegetative tillers were 12% (spring) and 22% (summer) longer from sward than from spaced plantings. Moreover, reproductive tillers were 26% taller in sward than in spaced plantings. Also, leaf blades of vegetative tillers in spring growth were more than twice as long, of similar width and 65% thicker than leaf blades from reproductive tillers. Because divergent genotypes respond similarly to plant density, it is concluded that observations taken in spaced plantings of orchardgrass can be used to make inferences about relative differences in sward plantings for the traits studied.  相似文献

A rumen-fistulated steer was used for the manual collection of samples of freshly swallowed herbage, in a grazing-management experiment on a perennial ryegrass sward. Diurnal and seasonal changes in the in vitro digestibility of the herbage selected by the grazing animal were studied under both strip- and continuous-grazing methods of management.
There was no appreciable change in digestibility as the sward was grazed down from upper to lower layers under strip-grazing management in April and May. In June to October a within-day fall in digestibility was found, much of which was attributable to an increase in the amount of old dead herbage grazed from the lower regions of the sward. Dead herbage taken in by the grazing steer was considerably lower in digestibility in August than in May. The in vitro digestibility of herbage samples, cut to ground level before and after grazing in a strip-grazed treatment, fell markedly as the proportion of dead herbage in the sample increased, giving a high negative correlation.
In a continuous-grazing management there was no pattern of diurnal variation, and the seasonal variation in digestibility of the ingested herbage was less than in strip grazing. The implications of these results are discussed in relation to indirect methods of digestibility determination (faecal-index technique), the measurement of herbage intake, and to some aspects of grazing management.  相似文献

The effect of feeding either traditional concentrates containing starch or high quality fibrous concentrates on the performance of grazing dairy cows was examined in a trial in which cows were given concentrates with either 350 g starch and sugars (kg dry matter (DM))-1 (high-starch) or 100 g starch and sugars (kg DM)-1 (high-fibre). The swards used consisted predominantly of perennial ryegrass and were usually aftermaths following cutting. Each area was grazed for 3 or 4 d at each grazing and a two-machine sward-cutting technique was used for estimating herbage intake.
The effect of concentrate composition on the herbage intake of grazing cows at a high daily herbage allowance of 28 kg OM above 4 cm cutting height was investigated in 1983 and 1984. With 54 kg OM d-1 of high-starch concentrates the mean herbage intake was 11·5 kg OM d-1 per cow while cows fed 5.3 kg d-1 of high-fibre concentrates consumed on average 12–6 kg OM d-1. The mean substitution rate of herbage by concentrates was reduced from 0·45 kg herbage OM (kg concentrate OM)-1 with the high-starch concentrate to 0·21 with the high-fibre concentrates.
The effect of the treatments on milk production was studied in 1984. The cows consumed 5·5 kg OM d-1 as concentrates and grazed at a lower herbage allowance of 19 kg OM above 4 cm cutting height. With high-fibre concentrates milk production and 4% fat-corrected milk production were 13 and 1·8 kg d-1, respectively, higher than with the high-starch treatment. The daily live weight gain with the high-starch concentrates was 0·17 kg per cow more than with the high-fibre concentrates.  相似文献
