The Bayer Multistix are commonly used for detection and estimation of feline glucosuria by veterinarians and cat owners. A newer product, the Purina Glucotest, utilizes the same enzymatic technology for detection of glucose, but has been designed for home use as a litter additive that allows interpretation of glucosuria over an 8-h period. The objectives of this study were to assess the sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of the Glucotest and Multistix, and to assess the 8-h color stability of the Glucotest. Overall, the Glucotest had greater sensitivity and specificity than the Multistix, and more accurately estimated urine glucose concentration if evaluated at least 30 min after exposure to urine. A significant lack of agreement between the results obtained immediately after exposure to urine vs after 30 min and 8 h contradicts the 8-h color stability claim, but the change in urine glucose concentration estimation over time resulted in improved test accuracy at the 30 and 480 min time points.  相似文献

Dairy replacement heifers given two strategic treatments with ivermectin (0.2 mg/kg) three and eight weeks after turnout to spring pastures in northern USA had mean adjusted weight gains (62.3 kg) that were 62 per cent (P less than 0.02) greater than those of control heifers (38.5 kg) at the time of winter housing. Pasture infectivity was consistently higher in control pastures and there was a sixfold difference between treatment (56 L3/kg) and control (358 L3/kg) pastures by the time of winter housing on October 18. This study confirmed earlier studies in northern USA demonstrating the value of two strategic treatments in achieving significant increases in weight gains and hastening the time of first breeding by one to three months at a saving of $40 to $140 per heifer. It was concluded that this dosing strategy is a satisfactory method of parasite control for dairy replacement heifers in northern USA without undue selection for drug resistance.  相似文献

Treatment of ewes with broad-spectrum anthelmintic in August (pre-lambing) and early November, and of lambs in early November and early February, was effective in controlling infections with Trichostrongylus spp in lambs reared on contaminated pastures under set-stocked conditions. It was ineffective in controlling infections with Haemonchus contortus; 82% of lambs had to be withdrawn from the experiment because of severe haemonchosis. Treatment with closantel (7.5 mg/kg) at the same times was very effective against H. contortus but ineffective against Trichostrongylus spp; 25% of lambs had to be withdrawn because of severe trichostrongylosis. The same schedule using broad spectrum anthelmintic and closantel administered concurrently was effective against both parasites; no lambs had to be withdrawn and the bodyweight gain of lambs was higher than in lambs treated with broad-spectrum anthelmintic or closantel alone. The results provide a basis on which to develop a preventive anthelmintic treatment program to control haemonchosis and trichostrongylosis in sheep which will allow the current high frequency of treatment with broad-spectrum anthelmintics to be reduced. Such a program may retard selection for anthelmintic resistance in Trichostrongylus spp.  相似文献

In May 1985 four groups of 10 calves, aged between four and five months, were turned out on to separate, permanent pastures of equal area which had been seeded during the previous few days with larvae of Dictyocaulus viviparus. One group acted as a control, the second was vaccinated with lungworm vaccine before turnout and treated with thiabendazole three, eight and 13 weeks after turnout, while the third and fourth groups were given ivermectin three times (three, eight and 13 weeks after turnout) and twice (three and eight weeks after turnout), respectively. A severe outbreak of parasitic bronchitis resulted in the death of three control calves within five weeks of turnout and parasitic bronchitis and gastroenteritis affected the second group of calves after approximately four months at pasture. The calves given ivermectin excreted no lungworm larvae and remained free of clinical parasitism throughout the trial.  相似文献

A restricted programme of strategic dosing with triclabendazole was used to treat a sheep flock with severe clinical fascioliasis. After five years the percentage of ewes passing fluke eggs was reduced from 49 per cent to less than 1 per cent, without the reappearance of clinical fascioliasis. It is suggested that this programme offers an efficient and practical means of controlling fascioliasis.  相似文献

A study was carried out to evaluate the effects of strategic early-season treatments with eprinomectin on first-season grazing calves exposed to strongyle infections on a naturally contaminated pasture. Two groups of first grazing season (FGS) calves were turned out in mid-May on two plots that were similar with respect to size and herbage infectivity. They grazed separately until housing at the end of October. One of these groups was given eprinomectin pour-on at turnout and 8 weeks later, while the other group served as untreated controls. The results showed that the treatments reduced gastrointestinal strongyle infections throughout the season as evidenced by lower faecal egg counts and serum pepsinogen levels compared with the controls. Furthermore, the results of herbage larval counts and postmortem worm counts in tracer animals demonstrated that the treatment had reduced herbage infectivity on the 'treated' plot. Finally, the chemoprophylactically treated calves had a better weight gain over the duration of the study than the untreated controls.  相似文献

The main lesions of paratuberculosis in ruminants are in the small intestine. Previous studies have shown that the bacterium enters the small intestine through M cells found in the follicle-associated epithelium lining the domes of the Peyer's patches. The everted sleeve method, devised for the in vitro study of intestinal absorption, was used in this study to investigate the uptake of Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis in goat intestine. Everted small intestinal sleeves of goat kids, prepared from areas with and without Peyer's patches, were incubated for 60 min in 3H-labeled bacterial solution. The results of this study imply that the bacteria can enter the intestinal mucosa of the jejunum, both in areas with and without Peyer's patches. These findings indicate, therefore, that M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis bacteria not only enter through M cells but also through enterocytes.  相似文献
